GREETINGS! On behalf of our residents, we are proud to welcome runners, walkers, family and friends to Downtown Columbus for the 2022 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. I am delighted to welcome you to Columbus. We are America’s Opportunity City, rich in history and poised for a continued vibrant future. We are a welcoming community, a boomtown, a place with a cool factor that draws people from all over the country to meet, compete and visit. We have dynamic entertainment districts and friendly neighborhoods, many of which you will discover during the Half Marathon, OhioHealth Quarter Marathon and Cap City 5K. Columbus is among the top sports destinations in the United States. In fact, just last year our city hosted the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships in Nationwide Arena which brought a tremendous amount of energy, excitement and national attention to our downtown. In recent years our city has also hosted the NCAA Women’s Final Four, NHL All-Star Weekend and the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. While you are here, we invite you to explore the many things we love about our community: the world class Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Franklin Park Conservatory, COSI, fantastic shopping, restaurants and nightlife in the Arena District, Short North, German Village, Easton Town Center and dozens of friendly neighborhood spots. Good luck and thank you for supporting the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon! Sincerely,

WELCOME! Whether you are a seasoned CapCity participant, or new to this race, it’s great to have your participation! As central Ohio’s largest health system, and its second-largest employer, OhioHealth is proud and privileged to be the title sponsor of this wonderful event – and equally excited to be inperson this year. The last two years, facing a global pandemic really tested us as individuals, families and communities. Through the pandemic, I witnessed strength, determination, passion and compassion from healthcare workers on the front line who were exhausted by the physical and emotional toll of COVID. But they persevered. They dug deeper than they ever thought they could. Just like you, when you hit the running and walking trail. As you participate today, please know that a portion of your registration fee supports our mission to bring healthcare services to communities in need. So, in addition to your personal achievement, you are truly running for our community. Today, as you hit the course, do so with gratitude. Grateful that you are healthy enough to participate and thankful that you are inperson, running with friends! On behalf of the 35,000 OhioHealth associates, physicians and volunteers who care for you on race day and every day, congratulations on your perseverance to get here. Have a great run.

Land-Grant Produces Limited Edition 13.1 Recovery Haze Pale Ale Land-Grant Brewing Company, a Columbus-based brewery with a strong love and dedication to local sports, has again produced a limited-release custom craft beer to celebrate the 2022 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. 13.1 Recovery Haze Pale Ale will be released at LandGrant’s taproom in late March and be available in cans exclusively in most Giant Eagle stores in Central Ohio in late March and April. 13.1 Recovery Haze Pale Ale is a fruity, citrus and bright tasting ale brewed with electrolyte to create an ideal celebratory post-race beverage that is easydrinking and refreshing. The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon became the first major running and walking event in the nation to have its own beer when Land-Grant created 13.1 Wheat in 2018 to celebrate the event’s 15th Anniversary. Land-Grant is the Official Beer the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, which is set for Saturday, April 20. The 12,000 runners and walkers in this year’s event will be celebrated with a complimentary can of Thirteen Point One at the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party.

Diamond Cellar, the Official Jeweler of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, is offering FREE medal engraving for all finishers of the 2022 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, OhioHealth Quarter Marathon and Cap City 5K. After the race, take your medal to the Diamond Cellar’s Sawmill Road location at 6280 Sawmill Rd. Dublin, 43017. Diamond Cellar is the Official Jeweler of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and the title sponsor of the Diamond Cellar VIP Experience.

Thirteen Point One will also be served in the Diamond Cellar VIP Tent on Race Day. “We are proud that the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon was the FIRST event in the nation to have its own beer,” race director David Babner said. “Many events have beer sponsors but Land-Grant has once again taken the extra step to create a custom beer to celebrate Cap City and that we were ‘Made in Cbus.’” Land-Grant has been a popular local brewery since it opened its iconic taproom in Franklinton, on the near West Side of Columbus, in October 2014. The company’s name is a nod to The Ohio State University and the company has been a major supporter of the Columbus Crew and other local sports teams.

Best Tour of Columbus On Two Feet

S

ince its debut in 2004, the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon has strived to offer “the best tour of Columbus on two feet.” “The city provides an amazing backdrop for our event and we are excited to feature our city each year with courses that showcase our best neighborhoods, entertainment districts and iconic buildings,” Race Director David Babner said. Don’t miss these sites during the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, OhioHealth Quarter Marathon and Cap City 5K.

DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS AND JOHN F. WOLFE COLUMBUS COMMONS

Start / Finish Line

The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon begins and ends on High Street in the heart of Downtown Columbus, which is in the midst of a revival that has brought new restaurants and shops to the city center. More than 8,000 people now live in downtown Columbus. The John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons, site of the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party, is a six-acre park that opened in 2011 and has spurned more than $400 million in private development. The park hosts more than 200 free events each year.

GERMAN VILLAGE AND SCHILLER PARK

Half & Quarter Marathon, Miles 1-2

Originally built by German settlers in the mid-1800s, German Village features restored brick houses and shops with streets and sidewalks full of historic charm. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is one of the largest privately restored neighborhoods in the United States. At the center is Schiller Park. The city’s second oldest park was established in 1857 and is named for famous German poet Friedrich von Schiller.

GREATER COLUMBUS CONVENTION CENTER AND GOODALE PARK

Half Marathon, Mile 9

The city’s iconic convention center was designed by famed architect Peter Eisenman and opened in 1993. It was expanded in 1999 and underwent a major renovation in 2016. The Greater Columbus Convention hosts nearly every major event that comes to the City of Columbus.

The Schottenstein Center, which includes Value City Arena, became the city’s first multi-purpose arena when it opened its doors in November 1998. The arena is home to the Ohio State men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s ice hockey team, concerts and other special events. The arena seats 18,809 for basketball and is the largest arena in the Big Ten Conference.

Half & Quarter Marathon, Miles 4-5

Goodale Park, the city’s oldest public park, was donated to the City of Columbus in 1851. For a few months during the Civil War, the park was a staging area for Union Troops known as Camp Jackson. The park hosts ComFest, a free, non-corporate music and arts festival held in the park in each June.

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

Half Marathon, Mile 7-9 The Ohio State University is a landgrant university that was founded in 1870 and is one of the largest universities in the United States with approximately 60,000 students on its main campus. The Half Marathon course goes past The Oval, an 11acre park that is one of the most recognizable spots on campus.

OHIO STADIUM

Half Marathon, Mile 8½ -9 The world-renowned home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, Ohio Stadium opened in 1922 with a then incomprehensible capacity of 66, 210 at a cost of $1.49 million. Today the stadium, also known as the Horseshoe or simply the ‘Shoe, sells all 102,802 seats on fall Saturdays as fans come from near and far to watch their beloved Buckeyes.

NATIONAL VETERAN MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM

SCHOTTENSTEIN CENTER

NATIONWIDE ARENA & ARENA DISTRICT

Cap City 5K, Mile 1

The National Veterans Memorial and Museum, officially designated by the Federal Government when it opened in October 2018, is the nation’s only memorial and museum dedicated to the more than 20 million living veterans throughout the United States, from the Greatest Generation to those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

COSI COLUMBUS

Cap City 5K, Mile 1

Half Marathon, Mile 12 Cap City 5K, Mile 2

Nationwide Arena has been home to the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League since September 2000. The arena, which also hosts concerts and family events, sits at the heart of the Arena District, one of the city’s hottest entertainment districts that was built through a unique partnership between Nationwide Realty Investors and the City of Columbus.

COSI Columbus is the city’s children’s science museum that moved in 1999 to the city’s riverfront in a 320,000 square foot building designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The Center of Science and Industry has been a favorite destination for families and school children since opening in 1964 on E. Broad Street.

MCFERSON COMMONS / ARCH PARK Cap City 5K, Mike 2

OHIO STATEHOUSE

Half Marathon, Mile 13 Quarter Marathon, Mile 6.4 Cap City 5K, Mile 3 Built between 1839 and 1861, the Ohio Statehouse is one of the oldest working statehouses in the United States. The Greek Revival building is at the heart of Capitol Square in downtown Columbus and houses the Ohio General Assembly and ceremonial offices for the state’s governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer and auditor.

McFerson Commons, across the street from Nationwide Arena, is a park in the heart of the Arena District. It is commonly called “Arch Park” because the focal point is the entry arch to the Old Union Train Station, which was on the site of the Greater Columbus Convention Center before it was demolished in the 1970s. The arch was preserved and moved to McFerson Commons, named for Dimon R. McFerson, former chairman and CEO of Nationwide Insurance.

SHORT NORTH & ITALIAN VILLAGE

Half Marathon, Mile 6 The Short North Arts District and Italian Village are iconic neighborhoods that border downtown Columbus. The Short North is full of restaurants, pubs, art galleries and shops and is a popular destination for residents and visitors. Italian Village, just west of the Short North, is known for its historical and cultural preservation and has some of the highest home values in the City of Columbus.

WE HELP YOU STAY HEALT

RUN TIPS

Before the race + Preview the race route. Knowing the route ahead of time allows you to prepare mentally and physically for your race. Take note of refueling and medical stations. If you’re racing virtually, plan your route ahead of time and try to avoid high vehicle traffic areas.

+ Be prepared. Lay out your gear the night before and fill out the details on your race bib. Make sure all of your devices (watch, phone, headphones) are charged up and ready to go.

+ Wear layers. Choose items to stay warm and dry with layers of clothing you aren’t afraid to toss.

+ Follow the 15-degree rule: Dress for your run like it’s 15 degrees warmer than the current temperature.

+ Pick a parking lot or bus route. There’s a map on the race website

+ Race day isn’t the time to try something new. Stick with the clothes, shoes and foods you know.

+ Relax, stretch and smile! It took a lot of hard work to get here today. Enjoy the moment!

Race day + Pace yourself. Designated runners will maintain consistent minutes-per-mile paces to help keep you on track. Or, use a smart watch or other device to help set your pace and stick with the tempo at which you have been training. + Use adhesive bandages or balm to prevent chafing. The medical stations will have petroleum jelly. + Stay hydrated. Refueling stations are designed to move runners along quickly. + If you see a runner in distress, alert medical personnel along the course. + Warning flags will be flying at each refueling station. If they’re not green, stay alert and follow instructions.

After the race

+ Clear the chute. Keeping the finish line clear keeps your fellow runners safe. + Keep moving. A “warm down” after your race is a really good idea to help with soreness and recovery. A slow walk or really light jog can go a long way! + Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drinking water or sports drinks will help you recover. + Take a victory stretch! Proper stretching will help with your recovery. OhioHealth personnel at the stretching and cooling tent are ready to help. + Listen to your body. If you have pain that won’t go away, talk to a sports medicine doctor or call the OhioHealth Sports Medicine Helpline at (614) 566-GAME (4263)

The best thing you can do leading up to race day is stick to your training plan. Continue to hydrate well and eat whole foods while minimizing junk foods and fast foods as much as you can. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, and nuts are great sources of protein and fiber that will give you plenty of energy on race day. Also, one of my favorite things about a long run is a great playlist! Don’t forget to choose songs with high “beats per minute” along with any other songs that get you pumped up! Good luck on race day! A young(er) Dr. Bring.
