T
he July edition of Uniquely Gahanna highlights the most important and valued aspects of our community–the people who live here and who work here. From the creative minds behind Gahanna’s newest breweries, to an enterprising Gahanna resident who turned his own passion for fishing into an opportunity to teach our youngest citizens about the joys of fishing, the residents and businesses of our city continue to write their unique stories every day. For our team here at the City, 2021 has been a whirlwind of activity focused on improving and adding to the features that make our community so special. Thanks to residents’ support of Issue 12, significant infrastructure improvements are underway–including the largest street program
in the City’s history (an investment of $5+ million, covering 7 miles of roadway), installation of new playgrounds at Woodside Green and Headley Parks and the creation of a new Sidewalk Maintenance Program that will provide an affordability tool to assist residents with needed sidewalk repairs. Development also continues to be a key focus for the City, as our future financial stability is dependent upon new businesses coming into town as well as supporting our existing businesses in their growth and expansion opportunities. In the coming months, we will officially welcome businesses such as The Superior Group, BillGo and Amazon to Gahanna, and will break ground on new medical office buildings at the Crescent at
Central Park and the new Gahanna branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. The summer months also will see the return of some of Gahanna’s most beloved events along with new activities to enjoy outside. It is wonderful to hear the sound of music again in the Creekside District and to see our residents gathering and celebrating what we love most about Gahanna. As we continue to rebuild–both figuratively and literally, we remain focused on making Gahanna the best place to live, work and visit– every day.

Just two years after the passage of Issue 12, dollars dedicated to City infrastructure are making a noticeable impact. This year, over seven miles of roadway will be resurfaced or completely rebuilt. That is a stark contrast to the street program in 2014, when less than one mile of roadway was repaved or rebuilt. New Gahanna Branch: CML Perusing rows and rows of books will soon look very different in Gahanna. The current Gahanna Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML), located at 310 Granville St., will be replaced with a modern, two-story building in 2022. The new branch will be focused on open meeting spaces for all ages and will serve as a “21st century community centerpiece,” according to CML spokesperson Ben Zenitsky. “The Gahanna Branch was built on its current site in 1991. The needs of Gahanna residents have evolved dramatically since that time. No longer are libraries merely vaults for books. Public libraries of the 21st century serve as community
New Lincoln Elementary This fall, almost 700 students in the Gahanna-Jefferson Public School District will walk into a new elementary school building— something that hasn’t happened in 26 years. Located next to Middle School South, at 261 Helmbright Dr., the new Lincoln Elementary will replace the original building, constructed in 1957, adjacent to Gahanna Lincoln High School on Havens Corners Rd. The new Lincoln Elementary was funded by the District's bond issue and operating levy passed in May of 2018, and is the centerpiece of Phase 1 of the District’s Master facilities plan. ← Watch the ribbon-cutting ceremony here

centerpieces, with iconic designs and wide-open, welcoming spaces filled with natural light and an emphasis on people,” he added. The new two-story building, which will be constructed on the same site, will be significantly larger than the current building, which stands at 21,400 feet. The new building will add an additional 16,000 square feet, almost doubling the size of the current branch. Zenitsky said spaces set aside for young minds include a larger Homework Help Center, a dedicated space for teens, and a larger children’s area, including the new “Ready for Kindergarten” space where preschoolers and their families
can familiarize themselves with a kindergarten classroom. “We’ll have more meeting rooms and small study rooms available for customers to reserve, as well as a quiet room for those who still enjoy a little tranquility with their library visit,” Zenitsky said. “Front and center, though, will be our collection, and everything we do will revolve around books and reading. We’re eager to shatter Gahanna’s preconceived ideas of a public library.” The temporary location for all Gahanna Branch operations has been moved to 310 Hamilton Rd., in the Hunter’s Ridge Shopping Center.

Stella & Grace Boutique Like many great business ideas, Stella & Grace (S&G)— Gahanna’s newest boutique clothes store, was born from a need. Owner Holly Garrison was desperately seeking cute, comfortable, and convenient clothes to wear while on maternity leave with her second baby. Stella & Grace Boutique began as an online store in June 2017. Garrison attended markets and pop-up events around Ohio and surrounding states to grow her online presence. On May 31, 2021, she opened her first brick-and-mortar store at Creekside Gahanna. “My girls were the motivation behind starting the business, and the reason why we landed on Stella & Grace as the name of the business,” Garrison said. “I had always wanted to start a business, to create something from nothing, and to build something special. I wanted to help build and contribute to a community, and to leave a legacy for my family. I did not just want to tell my girls ‘anything is possible if you work hard’—I wanted to show them.” Garrison strives to carry both trendy and staple pieces to keep customers’ wardrobes new and versatile. Shoppers can find everything from tops, dresses, and outerwear to denim, shoes, and accessories. “I really want to create more than another retail clothing store,” she said. “I want to help create a fun Creekside destination experience." “We could not be happier to have found this community in Gahanna,” she said. “The atmosphere is laid back with a strong sense of community, and the support has been fantastic. Everyone has been so kind. The surrounding businesses have been incredible and so helpful. We feel very fortunate that we found our location in Gahanna!”♦

DEVELOPMENT NEWS ← City Welcomes New Economic Development Director After serving as Director of Economic Development and Executive Director of GROW Licking County for the past five years, Nate Strum has joined the City of Gahanna’s team as Director of Economic Development. Focusing on the diversity of opportunity and collaboration with existing partners in Gahanna, Strum said he will prioritize building out a robust business retention and expansion platform for the City, which will add in building strong relationships within Gahanna’s business community. He added, “Through this initiative, I hope to directly collaborate with members of our existing business community, understand key drivers to promote local growth opportunities, and build key relationships that will promote Gahanna.”
→ The Superior Group Expands in Gahanna Founded in 1925 and headquartered in Central Ohio, The Superior Group (TSG) is well known in the Columbus region as a leader in the electrical and technology design industry. TSG is expanding their advanced logistics operations into a 300,000 square-foot facility located at 1015 Taylor Rd., and will bring 4050 new jobs to the City. “When searching for a centralized location for our Advanced Logistics Facility, we were hoping to join a community aligned with our passion towards workforce development and creating opportunities for members of the community,” stated Alyssa Himmel, Communications Director for TSG. “Gahanna is also geographically advantageous, located in close proximity to our operations in Central Ohio and the larger Midwest region. Gahanna is a great fit, and we are looking forward to bettering each other as a unit in this pursuit.” TSG has over 1,400 employees across the nation, over 800 locally, and continues to expand through manufacturing services and concepts for their customers. “We envision this space serving as a training ground for those interested in the electrical trade, utilizing the facility as a springboard to prosperous careers in the construction industry,” Himmel added.

Strum also currently serves as President of the Mid-Ohio Development Exchange (MODE), a regional membership organization that facilitates economic development within the Columbus Region. According to Mayor Laurie Jadwin, with rapid growth expected to continue in the Region over the next decade, Strum’s vast network in the development community will serve Gahanna well. “In 2021, our efforts are focused on strengthening Gahanna’s business environment. We are excited to welcome Nate to Gahanna and are confident that his strong skills and experience will bring positive, long-term results for our community,” she added. Brad Fisher To many locals, Brad Fisher’s name is synonymous with growing Gahanna businesses. Fisher is the owner of C-Suites Executive Offices, President of the Gahanna Area Chamber of Commerce, and has recently launched another venture called Go Fish Academy. “As a hobby fisherman and someone who loves to teach people how to fish, I decided to put together a beginner fishing course and see if people in the Gahanna community would take an interest,” Fisher said. “After launching the website and posting about the fishing academy on Facebook, I quickly attracted more than 100 families. With that level of enthusiasm, I launched the academy in April of this year—along with an online retail site with 1,500+ fishing tackle products.” Working and living in Gahanna for the past 10 years with his wife and five kids, Fisher noted that the City’s vibrant business community is just one of its strengths. “Gahanna is one of those places that is big enough to own a good business, but it’s small enough that you see people you know everywhere,” he said. “It’s one of the best communities to start something new, whether it is a family, a business, or a charity. The City staff, and the community as a whole, want you to succeed. They show a tremendous amount of support.” “Gahanna is a place where friends feel like family,” he said. “As the old saying goes, ‘it takes a village,’ and Gahanna is the kind of village you want to be a part of!”♦

The Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival RETURNS with LIVE Performances
O
hio’s BEST blues and jazz event is back this year, as the Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival® (CBJF), presented by Visit Gahanna, returns Sept. 17-19 to the Creekside District with a slate of outstanding bands and artists. Blues Music Award Winner Vanessa Collier will headline the Toyota Direct Blues Stage on Saturday night, as perennial favorite Urban Jazz Coalition takes the Heartland Bank Jazz Stage. The rest of the weekend rounds out with electric performances by Sean Carney & Friends, the Dave Powers Trio, James Gaiter’s Soul Revival, FLIPPO, Soul Kitch’n, and others. “We made the decision months ago to hold the event in September for 2021, due to COVID restrictions that were in place,” said Lori Kappes, Executive Director of Visit Gahanna. The 2020 CBJF was canceled due to COVID-19. According to Kappes, the CBJF steering committee already had implemented several changes to this year’s event in response to restrictions and autumn date for the festival, including two live music stages and modified hours.

“After having to cancel last year’s CBJF, we are thrilled to bring this tradition back to Gahanna’s beautiful Creekside District in 2021,” said Kappes. “Although some changes are being made for this year, festival attendees can still expect to enjoy amazing music, delicious food, and great fun!” General admission and reserved table ticket sales will be available for purchase online beginning June 18. Daily Admission is $15, and a weekend pass is $40. Youth admission is $10, and free for children five and under. Weekend reserved tables at the Toyota Direct Blues and Heartland Bank stages are also available for purchase, with options for seating 2-6 people. Festival hours are 5-11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19.

How Gahanna’s brewery and distillery industry members are working to help lift each other up By Sarah Sole / Photos by James D. DeCamp
W
hen Noble Cut Distillery made hand sanitizer last spring during the pandemic, the distillery had to get a bit creative with their sourcing. “We were fermenting anything that we could ferment to create alcohol,” said Founder and Head Distiller Tony Guilfoy. When Nostalgia Brewing donated Scottish Ale for Noble Cut’s sanitizer, the distillery gladly took it to produce about 500 bottles of sanitizer. Nostalgia’s donation is but one example of community culture that pervades the numerous Gahanna businesses focused on libations. From collaborating on drinks and events to promoting each other’s businesses in other ways, these industry players are proving that working together is far better than going at it alone. While Noble Cut was able to partner with Nostalgia to produce sanitizer, the distillery has also enjoyed a long working relationship with Simple Times Mixers. The two businesses share citrus fruits: Noble Cut uses the zest, or the fruit’s outer layer, for limoncello, while Simple Times uses the rest of the fruit for mixers. And when Heart State Brewing moved into the same complex that houses Noble Cut and Simple Times, Guilfoy was able to serve as a resource, suggesting local vendors for the new brewery’s boiler and water profile. “We’ve become very good friends with the Heart State guys,” Guilfoy said. Max Unverferth, co-owner at Heart State, said Gahanna offers an opportunity for growth. “Everyone I’ve met has been both helpful and nice,” he said. And while Heart State is just getting started, the brewery is already getting to know its neighbors. Unverferth said they turned to Simple Times for some advice on working with lemons for Heart State’s shandy. Simple Times Founder Mark Tinus said when he reinstates site tours this summer his goal would be to loop in Heart State as well. (Past tours at Noble Cut have also ended at Simple Times, according to Guilfoy.) →

“It’s just been a really great, communal environment,” Tinus said. Simple Times is also collaborating with another newcomer, Crafted Culture Brewing, producing a juice for one of their beers. It was a collaboration that came about when Crafted Culture owner Anthony “Sizzle” Perry’s son sidled up to the bar and jokingly ordered a watermelon rattler, knowing full well that the brewery didn’t have anything like that on tap. But that was when Perry realized his son’s suggestion could be an opportunity to collaborate with Simple Times. “As an industry, we don’t compete, we collaborate,” Perry said.

Crafted Culture is also partnering with Noble Cut on a summer offering for the Visit Gahanna's Herbal Cocktail Trail: a Country Thyme Cocktail with vodka, limoncello, and a thyme-infused, fresh-pressed lemonade. The collaboration that Perry practices is to thank for Crafted Culture’s building. Perry said the brewery wouldn’t have moved into Gahanna without the guidance of Edison’s head brewer, Victor Ecimovich. The two worked together at Actual Brewing. Ecimovich and Edison owner Wil Schulze gave Perry a heads up about the availability of the former Kindred Brewing’s tasting room, where Crafted Culture ultimately made its home. While Crafted Culture has Edison to thank for its location, the latter brewery also has plans to work with some of its other Gahanna neighbors in creative ways. Schulze said Edison wants to feature a couple of Simple Times cocktail mixes in mixed drinks. The brewery already offers Noble Cut’s limoncello. And in another bid to showcase Gahanna’s libations scene, Schulze is also working to plan a 5K beer run for Gahanna. The multiple breweries in Gahanna have made the city feel more like a destination for beer lovers, said Nostalgia owner Shawn White. “I think Gahanna’s a great spot,” he said. ♦

W
hen the pandemic prevented the City of Gahanna from holding its annual summer camp, the Parks and Recreation Department staff found a way to bring camp to the kids. How? Camp crates, filled with interactive items including craft materials, games, coloring book pages, and nature guides. The crates were so successful, they will return this fall with new materials and activities. The camp crates are just one example of pandemic programming that proved to be popular enough to make a return in 2021. The restrictions surrounding social gatherings and the overall concern for health and safety meant that much of what the City had planned for 2020 was put on hold, Ferrell said, and staff had to start thinking out of the box. Last year, Gahanna offered a variety of interactive programming to encourage people to visit the city’s parks. Whether it was music preformed by ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, or one of the movies shown last year, residents loved spending time outdoors in the City's parks. Another pandemic program that is making a return is Gahanna’s Summer Drive-in Movie & Concert series, offering four family friendly movies and five concerts throughout the summer months. In October, the City will bring back the Gahanna Goblin Trail, an event conducted last year as a socially distanced alternative to the city’s annual Creepside Festival. “The Goblin Trail was very well attended, and sold out quickly,” Ferrell said. “The drive-through event featured a light show, fire performers, stilt walkers, and a few surprises along the way.” Kids and families weren’t the only ones to take advantage of some creative programming options last year. In a format similar to a drive-in movie, Gahanna offered its older residents the chance to participate in Parking Lot Bingo, which continues to be offered through the Gahanna Senior Center. ♦

Bally Sports Group Bally Sports Group is a youth sports programming company composed of educators, teachers, coaches, former athletes, and sport management students who specialize in providing quality youth sports programs and camps. Gahanna Parks & Rec is proud to partner with BSG in offering these programs: • Soccer Discover the basics of dribbling, passing, scoring, and game play. Classes begin in September. • Little Sluggers T-Ball Introduces players to batting, base running, fielding, throwing, and catching. Provides children with a fun and positive T-ball experience. Classes begin in September.
Amazing Athletes of Central Ohio Fall Session: Sept. 16 – Oct. 21 Amazing Athletes is a developmental physical program. Teaching methods are based on age, with tot classes focused on discovery-based learning in structured physical activities. Older classes encourage the exploration and development of athletic skills through different sports. • Amazing Tots (Ages 1.5 - 2.5 years) 5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. Thursdays

Edington Family Fitness (Programs are Virtual) A master CrossFit Games World Champion, Shellie Edington participated in the CrossFit Games five times from 2013 to 2017 placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th in the world. She founded Tumblin4Kids in 2000. • Fitness with Shellie: Virtual / Ages 18+ Each workout is led by Coach Shellie and consists of joint mobilization, full body warm up, and strength development. Workouts can accommodate a variety of fitness levels. Sessions are offered from 6-6:45 a.m., Monday-Wednesdays. Options: July 5-28, Aug. 2-31, Sept. 6-29, Oct. 4-27. Register: Webtrac.Gahanna.gov • Fit Kids Eight different virtual Fit Kids athletic sessions will be offered for children, ages 4-5 (4:30-5 p.m.) years and 6-10 (5:15-5:45 p.m.) years.
