As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history's darkest eras - China's Cultural Revolution - during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. He eventually made his way to the U.S. with $50 in his pocket, where against all odds, he later earned a PhD in laser la physics and graduated with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye procedures including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published 9 textbooks, holds several U.S. patents, and performed the world’s rst laser artiicial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE and 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Implantable Contact Lens (21+), 3D Forever Im Young Lens (45+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He established a non-proot charity, which to date has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge.

Welcome to our 2019-20 HCA Healthcare / TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC season. A message from TPAC's President and CEO
S
I am thrilled to be joining TPAC during this remarkable period of growth. Our mission is to create a lifetime of meaningful and relevant experiences through the performing arts, and we take seriously our strong commitment to this community, our indelible roots in Nashville, and the opportunities to create powerful connections between arts and life. If you have not had the opportunity to experience the work we do, I invite you to attend a public performance from our acclaimed HOT Season for Young People, pull back the curtain on touring and locally produced productions through our InsideOut program, and witness the incredibly moving showcases of the Disney Musicals in Schools Student Share or the Spotlight Awards ceremony. Of course, presenting a carefully curated Broadway season is also part of our nonprofit mission, and this season is a celebration of storytelling, great art, and songwriting. It's a perfect fit for a city that is growing and changing. Not only does this season feature the hottest titles on Broadway, but it brings a mix of contemporary favorites and fresh takes on big classic productions. Now is the time to put a dent in your Broadway “bucket list.”
A three-week engagement with the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton is the anchor of our season. However, each production has its own unique appeal and is a great piece of art, contributing to a full season of incredible works that will inspire, challenge, and entertain you. Once on This Island, CATS, The Color Purple, and Jesus Christ Superstar are moving revivals that pay homage to classic Broadway with strong music and themes that are exceptionally relevant and popular. Jesus Christ Superstar enjoyed a surge of popularity after a successful televised concert starring John Legend, Sara Bareilles, and Alice Cooper last spring, and CATS will have a starstudded musical release on the big screen in late December starring Taylor Swift and James Corden. We’re excited at the thought of new generations of theatre fans experiencing Broadway’s magical history this year. This holiday season, we'll present our second year of the co-production between the Lythgoe Family Give Kids Panto and TPAC with Aladdin and His Winter Wish, opening on December 12. Along with Aladdin, we'll share our stages with the work of our resident companies, welcoming the Nashville Ballet’s Nashville's Nutcracker, Nashville Opera’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Nashville Repertory Theatre’s A Christmas Carol. We hope you will make these wonderful productions part of your plans for a festive holiday season. Whether as a donor, a season ticket holder, or an audience member, your support allows us to fulfill our mission and provide access to the arts across Tennessee. ince moving to Nashville and joining the Tennessee Performing Arts Center as its new President and CEO, I’ve been overwhelmed by the warm welcome from TPAC staff, our patrons and donors, and the larger creative community.
Director's Note As we began our work on Once On This Island back in 2015, it became impossible to ignore the ever-growing number of disasters occurring around the world; from the unrelenting storms and earthquakes in Haiti, to the refugee crises at our own border and around the world, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and more recently the utter devastation suffered in the Bahamas, Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. By the time you read this, there will undoubtedly be more to add to this heavy list. It would seem no place or person is immune to the power and wrath of the gods. While doing research in Port Au Prince, the creative team and I learned first-hand that Haiti is a country deeply rooted in both faith and ritual. It became clear to us that we rebuild not only with hammer, nail and whatever materials are available, but through the healing power of storytelling. After being invited to take part in a Voodoo ceremony and witnessing this incredible religion firsthand, we realized how vital it was that this production honor the island’s beliefs and traditions as accurately and respectfully as possible both in design and execution to create a responsible as well as magical evening of theatre. Once On This Island is the story of how one seemingly insignificant girl becomes myth and legend for survivors of a wounded and healing island and how the good we do can echo and reverberate long after our lives are over. It is my hope that the story of Ti Moune might inspire any person, regardless of age, gender, race, ability, sexuality or circumstance to become catalyst for change; that through how they give and share love, they might inspire the tearing down of walls and not the erecting of them. I am so very proud of this company of artists and thrilled that they will be sharing this story with audiences around this great and hopeful nation. Enjoy the show! — Michael Arden, September 2019

History, classic literature and science leap to life in TPAC's Season for Young People
T
Supported by TPAC donors and sponsors, this diverse line-up of theatre, music, and dance for student audiences also offers affordable ticket prices, post-show talkbacks, comprehensive guidebooks, lesson plans, and opportunities to work with professional teaching artists in the classroom. Students from schools in Middle Tennessee and from as far away as Kentucky travel to TPAC to experience this mix of local, national, and international productions showcasing the beauty of the arts and incorporating artistic expression into their learning. The season begins in October with The Code, a play by the Vancouver-based Green Thumb Theatre, that addresses the issue of cyberbullying in schools. “Presenting art for teenagers is one of the most challenging and one of the most rewarding aspects of our work. They bring a lot of questions and thoughtful criticism to whatever they study or see on stage,” says Roberta Ciuffo-West, TPAC Executive Vice President for Education and Community Engagement. “The play explores freedom of speech, personal accountability, and the thin line between friendship and romance – all issues relevant to them.” Other productions evoke reflection and appreciation from the audience. Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks, The Diary of Anne Frank, and 72 Steps each highlight historical moments while paralleling them with societal issues today. “Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks and Nashville Ballet’s 72 Steps, inspired by Tennessee’s pivotal role in ratifying the 19th Amendment and ending the battle for woman suffrage, are not simply history lessons. Both make connections to current events and the issues of our time,

especially equal rights and full participation in society,” says Ciuffo-West. “The Diary of Anne Frank has an unparalleled place in history. Performed by a multicultural cast of mostly young actors, this version by National Players brings the perspective of artists who are not far removed from their own introduction to the work.” The season also features the fun and interactive Shakespeare in Jazz: All the World’s a Song, Homer’s The Odyssey, and a performance by Fisk Jubilee Singers®, the world-renowned ensemble which, under the direction of Dr. Paul Kwami, is an artistic and cultural jewel in Nashville. Two shows specifically designed for preschool to elementary audiences, Yao Yao and Diary of a Wombat, are from international production companies, representing TPAC’s commitment to feature professional artists and a range of cultural perspectives from around the world. Closer to home, TPAC will present A Christmas Carol, adapted by Mark Cabus from the Charles Dickens’ classic, as a tour to schools. It’s an exemplary work of art by one exemplary artist who connects with young people with flair and great fun. Also returning this season is audience favorite Doktor Kaboom. David Epley's character combines his two great loves – acting and science and guides students through scientific principles and experiments that are both entertaining and educational. But the season’s impact doesn’t end after the performances. TPAC’s ArtSmart program also provides opportunities for classroom residencies and collaborations between teaching artists and educators in conjunction with several shows, including Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks; Yao Yao; 72 Steps, Diary of a Wombat; and Shakespeare in Jazz. And a series of afternoon workshops for teachers will provide a closer look at Diary of a Wombat at the Nashville Zoo, explore Walk On: The Rosa Parks Story with members of the cast, and use inspiration from Shakespeare in Jazz to enliven Shakespeare lessons with the performing arts.

his beautiful rhyme from the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton served as a compelling theme in August as hundreds of Middle Tennesseans – from local businesses and community partners to donors and art lovers – planted seeds of their support for Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s comprehensive arts education and outreach programs at the 2019 TPAC Gala. The center’s signature fundraising event, TPAC Gala, provides critical funding that brings students from Pre-School to 12th grade to a variety of world-class performances, provides teachers with valuable resources and training, and sends the arts into classrooms to make learning more impactful and engaging. This year, TPAC presented its highest honor – the Applause Award – to Delta Dental of Tennessee and to former TPAC Board member, TPAC Foundation chair,
and chairman of Clearbrook Holdings Corporation, Michael D. Shmerling. “Our sponsorship of the gala allows TPAC to bring arts and education into Middle Tennessee classrooms, creating these enriching experiences for youth,” says Dr. Phil Wenk, President & CEO of Delta Dental of Tennessee, who has provided valuable guidance on TPAC’s Board since 2012 and currently serves as vice chair. “There’s no greater return on our investment than watching the teaching artists in the classroom and seeing smiles on the children’s faces.” Shmerling served on TPAC’s Board from 1999 to 2006, including a term as the board’s treasurer. After his term, he served on the TPAC Foundation Board from 2009 through 2018 and as the foundation board chair from 2010 to 2018. “I couldn’t be prouder of TPAC and the tremendous impact it has had on this community over its amazing 40-year life,” says Shmerling. “As for its future – the show must – and will go on!”

Accessible Services at Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) include parking, elevators, wheelchair seating, use of a TPAC wheelchair, designated restrooms, and services for patrons with limited hearing and vision. Infrared assisted listening devices are available at no charge at the entrance to each theater. TPAC offers American Sign Language, Open Captioning, Audio Description, and Braille programs on the Sunday matinee in the HCA Healthcare / TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC season. Large print programs are available for Broadway at TPAC shows. Special accessibility requests and concerns may be discussed in advance by calling 615-782-6577. Your message will be returned the next business day. Wheelchair reservations are made 48 hours in advance of the performance. Restrooms for Jackson Hall are located one level down from the 6th Avenue entrance, and on each level inside the theater. Restrooms for Polk Theater are located down the stairs to the left of the entrance to the orchestra level and on the tier level. Bars are located in the lobbies and inside the orchestra level of Jackson Hall. An ATM is on G-Level, near the security desk at the Deaderick Street entrance to the building. All electronic devices including cell phones, watch alarms, cameras, and recorders should be turned off prior to the show. For those expecting emergency calls, please call 615-782-4087 and speak with the House Manager 48 hours in advance of the performance.
