Bliss THE

EDITION

Welcome to the Adore Home magazine Bliss edition, featuring 2017’s hottest 10 trends for creating a blissful bathroom. Oh, how I wish I could give my own bathroom a makeover: Lately, I’ve fallen in love with the allure of bold-patterned, encaustic tiles; brass tapware; and round mirrors. So, if you’re about to renovate your bathroom, you’ll want to take notes from this special feature from page 27. Now, how about some interior inspiration for the rest of your abode? We’ve got four gorgeous home tours in this edition, with styles ranging from soothing simplicity and minimalist chic, to comfy coastal and Parisian flair. You’ll discover how our front cover home, featuring Catherine Ryan’s stunning kitchen, was interestingly achieved on a tight budget: Once an all-cream space, Catherine set about painting her laminate benchtops in white, then had her old cupboard doors professionally spray-painted to create a fresh, new look. Another thrifty update from this section – brass knobs, for some instant luxe appeal. It just goes to show that a few small changes in the kitchen can go a long way. Craving even more design delight? We whisk you away to Europe and the UK, where we showcase four extraordinary hotels with interiors so lust-worthy, you won’t want to leave. I’ll just add these to my ever-expanding list of places to visit – feel free to do the same.

Digital artist Kimmy Hogan gives us the dirt on her flourishing floral artworks, and how flowers can freshen our homes for spring. PHOTOGRAPHY CRICKET SALEH / STYLING JULIA GREEN STYLING ASSISTANTS GEORGIE FITZGERALD + KATIE HEARNE

Tell us about this new body of work, and the inspiration behind it. I have really turned up the volume in my new ‘Bloom’ collection. As I continue to develop my skills, I’m tackling more elaborate arrangements than ever before, with loads of detail and colour. My love of florals and botanicals is once again, at the forefront – though this time, I’m trying to do more loose and messy arrangements that are flowing out of the vase and all over the page.

Briefly tell us about the process of creating your digital prints. First step is a trip to the florist: I grab whatever flowers are appealing to me that day, and take them home to photograph. As I am a digital artist, I like to draw from a photo rather than real life, as I can pick out all the beautiful hues the flowers have to offer. The actual drawing of the artwork is done with the mouse and with hand motion – one shape at a time, layering as I go. For a digital artwork, the process is still very ‘handmade’ and time-consuming. Flowers and foliage seem to be a favourite subject matter of yours. What are some of your favourite flowers?

“I LOVE GRABBING AN ASSORTMENT OF FLOWERS FROM THE FLORIST THEN PUTTING LITTLE STEMS OR POSIES ALL OVER THE HOUSE.”

How do I choose? I adore peonies, hydrangeas, proteas, banksias, stocks, Queen Anne’s lace, ivy berry, and pretty much all Australian native flowers. What are your springtime decorating tips? I love grabbing an assortment of flowers from the florist, then putting little stems or posies all over the house. It’s a nice way to display all the random bottles I’ve collected, and brings some freshness to every room. I also think natural light is one of the greatest ways to make a room feel amazing, so draw the curtains, lift the blinds, and let the sun touch all those surfaces in your home.

STORE PROFILE

With her place at the helm of White Havana and its original sister store, The White Bungalow (in Nundah, Brisbane), Chris Curro has an amazing knack for creating paradise-inspired havens with retail sensibilities that tick the boxes of discerning shoppers. “Whether you are a trend-conscious customer searching for unique homewares, or on the hunt for that perfect accessory, outfit, or gift, we seem to appeal to everyone,” says Chris.

Chris Curro, owner of Whi

te Havana

According to Chris, she had no plans to expand beyond The White Bungalow until about a year ago, when she was presented with an exciting opportunity to create another one of her signature design concept stores – but this time, within a major shopping centre: Westfield Chermside. White Havana is a treasure trove of crisp whites, natural tones and textures, complemented with handcrafted statement pieces and lush, tropical accents. Brands include Nicole Fendel jewellery, Salus and The Kindred Co, along with artisan-made pieces sourced locally and abroad spanning furniture, fashion, décor, flowers and accessories. While the contents of White Havana hit the mark, so too does its exquisite design, which could be transported straight from a beachside villa in the Bahamas. White Havana’s statement design elements include its pitched ceiling – which Chris says is breathtaking – while the impressive entrance made from old cathedral doors dating back 130 years is fast “becoming one of the most photographed

things on the north side of Brisbane,” she says. Added to the holiday feel and colonial ambience is a touch of the Queensland vernacular, with traditional VJ panelling on the walls and timber floorboards.

unique tiles

Bland bathrooms are a thing of the past, with 2017’s interior spotlight on distinctive tiling arrangements. Whether you go subtle with small, geometric mosaics, or bolder using mismatched shapes and patterns, creative tiling is your transformative tool: “Tile selection sets the initial tone and mood of a bathroom,” says Olivia Sirocco, interior designer with GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens of Melbourne. “Its surface, depth, and how it ties into the rest of the room, is essential in creating the perfect space.” Olivia, who helped design these bathrooms shown, believes we should not limit the number of different tiles we use, as long as the textures and colours tie in together. “If you are looking at layering to create depth, it is also nice to incorporate different materials,” she adds. While Mediterranean-flavoured, encaustic tiles are a GIA favourite, “pastel colours, terrazzo bodies with patterns over the top, and Moroccan-inspired patterns” are also trending, Olivia says. 28

black fixtures

Black is today’s ‘it’ colour when it comes to bathroom fixtures – everything from cupboard door handles and tapware, to shower screen framing. Use black to create beautiful contrast on a whitened backdrop, or to fuel the drama of darkened surrounds, as Mim Fanning of Melbourne-based Mim Design demonstrates in these two bathrooms. Mim chose the matte black fixtures within the predominately black bathroom (left) to continue an existing dark accent scheme throughout the home. By pairing the black taps and other fittings with the dark marble vanity and tiles, Mim establishes “a lovely, strong contrast” while maintaining a moody ambience. In the white, black and marble bathroom (above), Mim’s chosen black-framed shower door and tapware create a stunning divergence on the light background, while complementing the home’s Edwardian heritage. Her addition of marble tiles and vanity allows for elegant contrast, without over-contrasting: “Too strong of a contrast can look harsh,” she says.

sexy shower + tapware

Tapware and shower fixtures in seductively chic colours and shapes have been topping interior ‘lust lists’ everywhere, this year. Custom finishes in particular have become more accessible than ever, with brands like Sussex upping their colour palette to 31 – including brushed gold (shown on shower set, left). “Everyone is loving gold tapware at the moment,” says interior designer Olivia Sirocco of Melbourne’s GIA Bathroom & Kitchens. “It’s a beautiful colour and classic way to bring warmth into the bathroom.” Olivia, who opted for sleek black tapware in the above bathroom she helped design, says white is also up-andcoming. And when it comes to shape, organic-formed fixtures – as opposed to square-edged – are also making a splash.

natural materials

“You just can’t compete with nature,” says Jen Bishop of Interiors Addict – and the design world couldn’t agree more, when it comes to showcasing natural materials in our bathrooms. For the Sydney blogger, a timber vanity and medicine cabinet (custom-built by Melbournebased Ingrain Designs) in her former bathroom, shown, helped create a neutral yet appealing space, while avoiding “another boring white bathroom.” Adds Jen, “I think people are realising that you can absolutely use timber in a wet room, provided it is treated properly. It adds so much warmth.” Having natural fixtures made-to-order for our bathrooms also helps to maximise what is typically a small space. Jen’s medicine cabinet, for example, provided the utmost storage in her bathroom – and conveniently, at eye-height.

Omvivo ‘Venice’ counter basin (450mm) $699 reece.com.au

Never underestimate the style power of a bathroom sink: Whether you go concrete-chic or curvaceous ceramic – two basins making headlines, this year – you’re certain to create impact, and Nood Co. founder Matt Di Costa couldn’t agree more. “Sinks are a great opportunity to make a statement in a bathroom. They are affordable and easily changeable – you can add colour or change up with another material.” The Box Sink (shown), a popular seller of the Perthbased brand, shows how concrete can look sharp yet soften your bathroom. As Matt points out, “(Our Box Sink) has a lovely Scandinavian reference, with soft curved edges.” Proof that concrete needn’t be rigid, after all: “Our concrete isn’t as aggressive and raw as your usual concrete. It blends into surroundings, accenting marble tiles and taps.”

lush greenery

To create a naturally inviting look for your bathroom, greenery is your best pick. Plants not only breathe life into bathrooms, but also add beautiful, bold accents on a typically neutral backdrop. Consider tropical plants – they’re wild about humidity from showers. Or why not welcome lush foliage – doubling as a privacy screen – through a large bathroom window, like Dot + Pop blogger and Instagrammer Eve Gunson.

One of your bathroom’s biggest – and most budgetfriendly – designer assets is actually hanging right in front of you – towels. Bath towels, rugs and mats in striking prints are the trend to soak up, now. Ask Carla Williams, owner of Melbourne-based brand Ziporah Lifestyle, a trailblazer in today’s towel designs. “Beautiful towels are the perfect way to makeover the bathroom, much like adding new cushions to a sofa or linens to a bed will transform a room,” says Carla. “I change over my bathroom towels each season…Colour and texture play a big role in seasonal soft furnishing restyling.”

T O P 4 T OW E L S >

Carla recommends decorating with a complete towel set to create an integrated and harmonious ambience. However, you can avoid the “matchymatchy” look by displaying the same overall towel design, but mixing up the colours. And rather than worry about matching towels with your colour scheme or braving a bolder palette, Carla believes its best to “break the rules”: “Ask yourself, ‘What do I want to highlight or complement?’ and choose your designs accordingly.” 34

Bonnie Hindmarsh of Sydney’s Three Birds Renovations recently chose a black contoured model (pictured, opposite) to make an opulent statement against a white herringbone tile backdrop. “Remember, tiles can’t distract from the bath,” Bonnie advises. “We created a subtle feature wall behind the bath that complemented rather than competed.” Meanwhile, Justin Northrup of Melbourne’s Technē Architecture + Interior Design worked a statuesque bath (pictured, this page) into the open-air courtyard of a matching art deco home: “Locating the bath outside was primarily experiential, while it also served to stretch the interior so it’s perceived as a generous space.”

floating vanities

Today’s sleek alternative to floor-mounted vanities, floating vanities do a whole lot more than make our bathrooms look ultramodern. “Floating vanities give small areas the illusion of space, as the visible floor area is increased,” says Vanessa Cook, design manager at Melbournebased Smarter Bathrooms+. She recently expanded a small bathroom (below, left) by pairing a custom-mitred Caesarstone benchtop with a floating shelf and ‘disappearing’ mirrored cabinet, which also compensate for storage. Wood Melbourne’s timber Aphra unit (below, right), meanwhile, provides stowage while still creating a sense of space and cleverly concealing the plumbing, for a seamless look. Adds company founder/carpenter Oliver MacLatchy, “Timber has a great warming effect in a bathroom. It instantly softens the feel of a space.”

Mirror, mirror on the wall – when it comes to transforming bathrooms, round has it all. A captivating way to soften your space, round mirrors counteract the hard edges that often make bathrooms feel ‘clinical’. So, why not dare to be different while adding feminine flair? Remember – the bigger, the better. Nood Co. Director Matt DiCosta wanted concrete accents in his ensuite, but also a means to “balance out the rawness” of the cement. So, the Western Australian designed some concrete, circular mirrors and gave his vanities a double-dose of femininity and style. “The circle is risky enough to be cool, yet familiar enough to attract large appeal,” he says. Principal Jean-Pierre Biasol at Melbourne’s Biasol Design apparently agrees, judging by the modish statement he made with this round mirror, shown right: “We loved the attachment detail. The mirror feels more like a piece of furniture, complementing the round Alape basin.”

SANCTUARY Smart renovation choices and a stellar eye for interior style have transformed this tired, Melbourne home into a crisp, cool oasis for Catherine and Lachlan Ryan, and their beloved pooch, Harvey.

PHOTOGRAPHY HANNAH BLACKMORE STYLING JESS FRAZER / WORDS CASEY HUTTON

When Catherine and Lachlan Ryan bought their first house, it was far from perfect. “It was all shades of cream and yellow, had grey carpets, torn curtains and an overgrown garden – but it was seriously love at first sight,” explains Catherine. Less than a year on, it’s hard to believe this is the same place. Now, when you walk through the front door, you pass dreamy bedrooms boasting casually luxurious bedding and statement light fittings, before the space opens into an elegant kitchen, dining and lounge area. The couple began the facelift of their Point Cook home by repainting it inside and out, and replacing the flooring. Then, they landscaped the back garden, installed new appliances and air conditioning, and updated the light switches and fixtures. For Catherine and Lachlan (“two old souls who just love being at home, pottering around with our golden retriever”), the trick has been to avoid overspending while creating a home they love. Having used most of their budget on the major renovations, they were savvy about furnishing the house (Catherine recommends signing up to email lists and then waiting for sales to purchase coveted, quality pieces). “Creating that high-end look I love – without the highend price tag – has been about compromise and research, and a lot of DIY weekends!” Catherine laughs. Instead of ripping out the dated cabinetry in the kitchen, the couple opted to have it sprayed white, and swapped its chrome doorknobs for brass. Replacing the cream laminate counters with stone benchtops was going to be expensive, so they painted them with Rust-Oleum, instead. “Within a weekend, we had a beautiful, costeffective kitchen that was practical and hard-wearing.” >

E L E G A N T D I N I N G Catherine’s ‘less is more’ approach is evident in the dining area. “I love clean, crisp whites with splashes of colour, in art and décor,” she says. The brass pendant light from Beacon Lighting is the hero of the space, while the other elements – such as the chairs and table from Matt Blatt Furniture, round mirror from Mint Interior Design, and rug from Temple and Webster – provide a calming backdrop.

“Style is so subjective – it’s important to ensure you are doing what you like, and not what you think others will like."

C AT H E R I N E ' S W I S E WO R D S

The kitchen, lounge and dining zone is the Ryans’ favourite part of the house. “The feature light from Beacon over our dining table is absolutely stunning, and is one of the first things you see when you walk into the room. The rest of the room then emerges around it, and you start to notice the other elements.” Catherine created distinct identities for the three spaces, but ensured that they worked together. A devotee of clean, crisp whites “with splashes of colour in art and decor”, she used investment pieces like her couch and dining table as starting points for styling. “I fell in love with my couch and had a floral blue cushion that I loved, and it went from there.” “I’ve tried to keep colour themes consistent throughout our house, (with) brass being featured subtly in each room through lighting, door handles or trinkets.” Catherine has learnt that working within your means and staying true to your tastes is vital. “In a sea of Instagram and interior stylists, it’s so easy to get confused.” “I’m not an expert, but I trust my gut and do what I like,” she quips. “Style is so subjective – it’s important to ensure you are doing what you like, and not what you think others will like. That’s when each room can start to look disjointed.”

Budget-friendly makeover A L L - W H I T E K I T C H E N Catherine’s kitchen was previously shades of cream. Not loving the colour palette, she decided to paint the laminate benchtops with a paint from RustOleum. “We choose diamond white, and within a weekend, we had a beautiful, cost-effective kitchen that was practical and hard-wearing. The cabinets were in great condition and had an abundance of character, so we decided to have them professionally spray-painted in white,” explains Catherine. “For us, it was about creating a practical, family home we would love – that didn’t break the bank.”

Painted in Taubmans ‘Iron Gate’, the wall allows the Vee Speers print from Norsu Interiors and the pendant light from IKEA to pop. “I wanted something that would still suit a relaxing, dreamy bedroom, but also add some warmth, as the rest of the house is white. Choosing paint colours is hard, so we painted a big piece of cardboard beforehand, and held it up against the wall – in all different lights – to see how it would look,” explains Catherine.

This study nook under the staircase makes good use of an awkward space.

S I T T I N G R O O M “I love the lion print from Crate Expectations,” says Paola. “I love big cats. The print just makes the room. It is the perfect size for the space, and the perfect picture of a Lion. I could stare into those eyes all day.” Leather sofa from West Elm.

S T U D Y N O O K Paola covered the back wall of the study nook in acoustic pinboard material from Ultimate Pinboards and Whiteboards. Chair from Sokol; table lamp from Clickon Furniture; basket from IKEA.

Deciding to renovate based on the need for more rooms, living space, weather insulation and energy efficient appliances sounds like your everyday remodel, right? Not so much, as Paola Gredler discovered. But with hard work, perseverance and a serious eye for style, the Gredler family survived the seven-month ordeal and are now living happily in the extraordinary, Melbourne-based home they’ve always wanted. So, how’d it all begin? “We wanted to keep the façade of the existing (Edwardian) house – and there is a heritage overlay on the property,” Paola explains. “So, we decided to maintain the front two rooms, then demolish from that point on.” The addition would then require the building of one top-floor and two bottom-floor sections, which would include two bedrooms, two bathrooms, walk-in wardrobe, powder room, laundry, stairs and study nook. With two boys aged four and two at the time, Paola and husband Steve decided it would be the most family-friendly scenario to have the sections built offsite. From there, it was off to live in the homes of Paola’s mum and her in-laws, for two months. Unfortunately, each were nearly an hour from the couple’s workplaces, and kindergarten. But through the “amazing” help of both families, from babysitting the kids to preparing meals, the Gredlers made it through – despite difficulties in tracking the building

progress, due to distance. “We did receive lots of photos, which was great, but it was harder to keep an eye on things,” Paola recalls. The challenges didn’t end there. “Planning the renovation with the view of utilising our space the best we could was an issue with neighbours and council planning,” says Paola, who says the larger home size received initial objections from both, causing her to reconsider the second storey. “Also, access was an issue, as we built out to the boundary. The builders needed access to both our neighbour’s properties on various occasions.” But Paola and Steve stayed true to their vision, even designing the interior themselves – sourcing everything from tiles to appliances. “I have always loved interiors. I spent lots of time on Pinterest and reading house mags for inspiration – and had been doing that for a few years prior to the renovation,” says Paola, who is currently undertaking an interior design course while working as a senior tax advisor. “Steve is in construction, and at the time, was producing high-end, residential towers. So, we knew what we liked.” The chosen fixtures, paired with a timeless palette of dark and neutral colours, embodied Paola’s interior style – > “a mix of minimalist, Scandinavian and contemporary.” adore home

The minimalist element is evident through minimal shades of grey, white and black (“I like using some colour with cushions and throws, but keep it minimal.”). Meanwhile, softening greenery and timber floors, cabinetry and outdoor storage sing Scandi. And when it comes to contemporary flair, look no further than any room in the house: the master bedroom’s cushioned headboard, the bathroom’s sleek timber vanity, the kitchen’s Carrara marble island benchtop. Not to mention, the seamless storage and seating in the open-plan living and dining area. Though Paola nearly nixed her modern chesterfield leather couch due to cost, and chased down her soldout then discontinued dining chairs until she found a company that would reupholster the same style chair – she remained committed to her dream of the home she wanted. Today, the whole family is glad she did. “We now feel we can all have our own space within the house,” Paola says. “The kids can play upstairs happily, while we relax downstairs.” And no doubt they’d be doing it in style.

S C A N D I C O U R T Y A R D “We wanted the outside barbeque area to look like a continuation of the kitchen inside,” says Paola. “The end result was a built-in BBQ with cupboards underneath, a seating area with storage for the kids’ toys, and a work shed, along one wall of the fence.” Chairs from Kmart; table from Outdoor Table Creations; Bonnie and Neil cushions from Ivy Muse.

DINING ROOM After much deliberation on which dining chair to purchase, Paola discovered her favourite was no longer in stock. She adds: “So over the next few months, I searched everywhere to find these chairs at a reasonable price, and found a company in Brisbane (GHIFY on eBay) that reupholstered their chairs for me (as they only had them in fabric). I think the harder it became to get these chairs, the more I love and appreciate them now.” Table from Nature’s Secret; pot from Glasshaus Nursery; sideboard from Clickon Furniture; art from Meizai; ‘Koura’ pendant light by David Trubridge for Mondoluce.

PARISIAN MEETS INDUSTRIAL

Great design can unlock a world of potential within a small home, which is just what former The Block contestants Matt and Kim Di Costa achieved with their Mount Hawthorn, Perth, home. PHOTOGRAPHY TARINA LYELL / WORDS JACQUI GREIG STYLING + INTERIOR DESIGN MATT AND KIM DI COSTA

PASSION FOR CONCRETE “I think my passion for concrete developed when I studied architecture,” recalls Matt. “I began to understand material use on a grander scale – in particular, concrete. When we created some pieces for our home, I realised that no one had made it beautiful; no one had put in the time to change it, for the better. It had so much untapped potential.” Many of Matt’s Nood Co. concrete furniture is used throughout the home, including the ‘Layla’ table and ‘Kevin’ stools pictured above.

As former The Block competitors and regular TV personalities for Perth-based show Matt & Kim To The Rescue, it is little wonder that creative duo Matt and Kim Di Costa were so successful with the conversion of their home, in 2016. With an eye for properties that have good bones, Matt and Kim bought their three-bedroom, one-bathroom house with the intention of deconstructing the existing space to enable an expansion. They then enlisted the help of RyanArc Architects, who assisted with the facade designs and planning. “By reshaping the interior of the home – while keeping all exterior walls – we had more options to design with,” explains Matt. And by re-designing the existing second story add-on, the footprint of the house was doubled. The couple removed the entire inside of the second story, along with the roof, balcony, walls, and floors. “We then redesigned the front of the house to incorporate our new plan, which included four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room and open plan. It also had to have a glass walkway, sunken lounge, and be orientated around the monster trees of our neighbours,” says Matt, who obviously thrives on a challenge.

bedrooms and bathrooms, keeping them the minimum functional size that matches the location and block size you have, and then adding punch to your project. Create spaces within spaces – people love a value-add. They tally that value-add by assessing the amount of usable spaces available within a home. For example, a bedroom with a bed, occasional chair space, study nook and viewing space – to an external view – has four uses, and hence becomes a huge value-add. Connect that to an ensuite, and you have five.” However, when it comes to increasing space for an individual, Matt is firm that you should build spaces that reflect your life, career and passions. As long-time fans of Jonathan Adler, the pair became interested in the concept of a ‘luxe injection’ four years ago, when they first started to see snippets of brass, marble and pastels being played with, in Europe. “Sketch restaurant in London was a breakthrough project, but I was determined not to plagiarise an idea. Rather, we set a design challenge that would hopefully produce a result that could stand on its own,” says Matt.

When it comes to increasing the size of space within a house, Matt believes there are two schools of thought: Either increase space for resale, or for you.

“We set the task of fusing the Haussmann-inspired, Parisian apartment aesthetic with industrial concrete, to see if we could get the blend just right. The Di Costa Residence was what followed. That, and an accidental furniture company.”

“If you’re looking at resale, it would be advisable to add

ELEGANT AND CONTEMPORARY It’s possible to mix luxe, high-end finishes like marble tiles and brass scones with industrial materials like concrete, as proven in Matt’s and Kim’s bathroom. furniture and homewares company, encompassing a range of indoor and outdoor dining tables, sinks, vanity sets, coffee and side tables, café tables, stools and housewares. Rethinking how concrete was perceived, Matt sat down to structure Nood Co. by writing an honest list of reasons why concrete hadn’t ‘officially’ joined the world of furniture. “It was bulky, heavy and nontransportable,” he recalls. “It wasn’t sealed effectively enough to match consumer expectations. A lot of (furniture) was fake (to look like concrete), but had no real quality of finish. No one had made it beautiful, affordable, functional and transportable. We changed all of that.” Real concrete can be found in every room of the Di Costa home, in different ways – be it furniture, sinks, benchtops, walls or flooring. In fact, the custom-made concrete, chevron-patterned, parquetry floor (pictured above) is hands-down one of the standout design features. Overall, Matt recommends injecting as much of your own personality into a project as possible. He is an advocate of the Herman Melville quote, “It is better to have failed in originality than to succeed in imitation” – something he has delivered in spades, with both his home and furniture business.

Packing up and moving countries is both scary and exciting, as Winchester-born Kate Jansen and her Australian husband, Deon, know all too well. Just over two-and-a-half years ago, they closed the door of their 100-year-old West London home for the last time, and set off for Australia with kids Jake and Jazmin in tow. Today, their new beach house on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula couldn’t be more different to their London pad, beginning with its surroundings. “I love being surrounded by native gum trees, on a hill overlooking the sea. It’s peaceful here,” says Kate. Only nine-years-old, the home is modern, spacious and low-maintenance. Once through the gate, a lush tropical garden leads to a wide glass door, with intriguing views of the hallway and living area beyond. Kate, an artist, homewares designer and interior stylist, first spotted the house on the internet in London, and knew it was “the one” when the couple went for a 30-minute viewing, on a fleeting visit to Melbourne. “It just felt so right, the second I stepped inside,” Kate recalls. Fast-track a few months, and the Jansens were picking up the keys to their dream home. Little did Kate know,

this house and the location would inspire her to reinvent her decorating style. “Since being here, my look has evolved into a more laidback, modern beach style, with lots of off-whites and natural tones – echoing the coastal surroundings,” says Kate. Because the house had solely been used as a holiday home by the previous owners, it was a blank canvas for Kate to introduce her stylish, coastal touches. For even though the spacious layout and overall design of the house was ideal for Kate and her family, she couldn’t wait to get stuck into cosmetic changes and bring personality to the space. A tropical, relaxed thread runs throughout the house, with palm wallpaper in Jazmin’s room; beachinspired, graphic prints; and a myriad of plants in every room. Kitsch touches, such as the pineapple light and plastic, pink flamingos in the garden, hint at Kate’s sense of humour. Whilst the space is full of eye-candy, Kate has kept the look paired-back and uncluttered, thanks to her carefully edited styling and a restrained colour palette. Her love of Scandi interiors is evident, with light lime-washed wood and classic Danish-inspired furniture, yet she has infused this with her own easy-going decorating style, so the house is homely and inviting. >

As a textile artist and cushion-maker, Kate always has comfy cushions on hand, including her mint, hand-dyed cushion from Wowhaus. Sheepskin from Adairs; ceramic beakers from Kaz Morton Ceramics; woven placemats from The Colour English.

L I V I N G R O O M Soft grey tones, floaty curtains, comfy cushions, and foliage create a calm, laidback vibe in the sun-drenched living area. A mix of cushions from Wowhaus and ‘Peace’ and ‘Love Is An Island’ cushions from Kawaiian Lion bring a sense of fun to the scheme. ‘Hampton’ sofa from Lounge Lovers; wire basket with oak top from Ferm Living; coffee table from GlobeWest; framed tea towel from Loft by Ourlieu.

D I N I N G R O O M One of Kate’s favourite finds is her vintage metal ‘LOVE’ sign from The Old Cinema in London, which takes pride of place in her dining area. Pendant light from Beacon Lighting; ‘Genoa’ (triangle print) cushion from Wowhaus; black and white cushion (on front chair) from Pony Rider.

JAKE’S ROOM “The chest of drawers in Jake’s room originally belonged to my grandmother. Then my mother had it in the house I grew up in, and would paint it to suit the décor,” explains Kate. “Now, I’ve painted it a vibrant emerald green, which I love.” Kate’s hand-printed, Wowhaus star floor cushion perfectly matches the green chest.

Since moving to Australia, Kate has started Wowhaus, a homewares business designing hand-painted cushions, and rediscovered her love of painting. At the beginning of this year, she also threw herself into designing the minimalist interior for Adhoc, a new Mount Eliza café owned by husband Deon, who also works as a chef. So, it appears this beach-loving family have found their piece of paradise and are set to stay. “After a stint in Perth and many years in London, we’ve finally found where we want to put down roots. I feel like this is where I’m meant to be,” smiles Kate.

JAZMIN’S ROOM Tropical ‘Too Palmy’ wallpaper from Kawaiian Lion creates a striking statement in 12-year-old Jazmin’s room. ‘Aloha’ cushion from Kawaiian Lion; white metal locker from Kmart; fluffy throw from Adairs; spotty plant pouch (on the locker) from Miss Pots.

MASTER BEDROOM White brick wallpaper from The Wall Sticker Company; orange ‘Spotty Dotty’ cushion and ‘Round Waves’ cushion from Wowhaus; woven stool from The Colour English; beaded pendant light designed by Coco Reynolds from Marz Designs; hand-painted crosses and tiles from Ahoy Trader.

There’s a lot to love about Sydney’s SOL Botanica restaurant: Hellloooo dusty pink chairs; hanging pot plants; brass-framed lights; statement carpet; and glass-topped, Greek column tables – all of which affectionately nod to cruise ship kitsch, redolent of The Golden Girls. And that’s probably no accident – the restaurant is part of Mark Moran’s multimillion dollar, Vaucluse complex that reimagines retirement living in a holistic-luxe setting. Open to the public with an all-organic, gluten-free menu, SOL Botanica’s focus is squarely on nourishing, fresh food done well – so we can all live long and prosper.

Check in to some serious style at Edinburgh’s new Eden Locke aparthotel – where modern and Scandinavian design rendezvous to transform the way we eat, sleep and holiday away from home. Sister to London’s Leman Locke, the Scottish capital stay is another dream accommodation come true, courtesy of New York City’s Grzywinski+Pons architects. The former six-storey townhouse now features expansive studios that treat us to yummy, sorbetshade pastels and bubbly bursts of texture and character, throughout. From the sunshine yellow doors to the mint green L-shaped sofas, bespoke furnishings complemented by natural light awaken the fully equipped, contemporary kitchen (dishwasher included), sleeping and living areas. The Hyde & Son coffee and cocktail bar, meanwhile, is as refreshing to our aesthetic as it is our thirst: The playful palette returns – and this time, with a relaxing, tropical vibe that is reinforced by lush greenery in terracotta pots, minimalist barstools in coastal white, and wicker-inspired seating. Brilliant and botanical, it’s the perfect space to immerse into a book, conversation or artisan beverage (carefully curated wine, anyone?). Like your Eden Locke studio, it’s a retreat into style that feels like home.

Mauritzhof HOTEL, MÜNSTER

Germany’s Mauritzhof Hotel Münster invites us to say Guten Tag to modern, minimalist design at its most welcoming. Nestled in Münster, a vibrant, cosmopolitan city of the North Rhine-Westphalia region, the Mauritzhof recently underwent a massive makeover at the hands of local architecture firm Kresings and Berlinbased interior design company Lambs and Lions. The result – one chic, boutique abode away from home. The 1950s-era brick building now stuns with a new limestone façade and additional storey, however, the cool yet cosy interior – complete with 52 newly designed guestrooms – is what truly captivates. A warm, subdued colour palette embraces from the moment we enter the lobby, whose modish lounge vibe (largely thanks to furnishings by Gubi and Fredericia) spans to the adjoining bar/restaurant, breakfast room, library and two meeting spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows amplify the earthy allure by bringing the urban green surroundings in, while dark wood panels – a striking statement throughout – conceal soft lighting and help indicate areas for socialising or retreat. 90

A warm, subdued colour palette embraces from the moment we enter the lobby... An upscale sophistication that would be “equally at home in Stockholm, Amsterdam or New York,” according to owner Stefan Reckheinrich, continues into the revamped guestrooms: The all-encompassing comfy hues and soft, layered textures instantly transform each boudoir into an escape. Adding to the indulgence are luxurious beds, heavy drapes, and open-plan bathrooms with walkin showers and sleek, metro tiles – all the amenities we need for one stylishly good stay.

PHOTOGRAPHY ROMAIN RICARD

For the ultimate in ooh-la-la interiors, pack your bags for the Hotel Panache, located in the historic Montmartre district of Paris. Coined a ‘neighbourhood’ accommodation, it’s anything but ‘everyday’: Here, interior designer Dorothée Meilichzon has perfected Parisian ambience by putting a modern twist on Art Nouveau style throughout the seven floors, 40 guestrooms and restaurant. Each room offers a unique portrayal of playful geometric shapes, arrows and other unexpected patterns, on a palette of navy blues, forest greens and anthracite greys on white. The contemporary canvas is a seamless backdrop for enchanting retro furnishings that invite us to: Dream beneath early 1900s-style, curved headboards. Chat on replica 1931 Ericsson telephones. Lounge on angular chairs inspired by renowned postwar architect, Pierre Guariche. And with statement mirrors, reading light globes and marble bathroom surfaces, it’s lavish style that works. The Restaurant Panache, meanwhile, serves up an aesthetic energy you won’t find anywhere else. Natural light through tall picture windows awakens the space, which overflows with character through striking stripe-accented tables, mosaic floor tiling and bold-hued seating. The lively display is then grounded in elegance by dark floorboards, marble bar and ornate wall tiles. Parisian ‘panache’ has never looked so delicious.

Leman

Fancy staying in London’s Whitechapel district? Make a booking with Scandinavian-meetscontemporary appeal at the Leman Locke aparthotel. New York City’s Grzywinski+Pons are to thank for the accommodation’s whimsical interior design and bespoke furnishings, beginning with the studios and suites: Here, harmonious pastels invite us to settle in to style-meetscomfort, in the form of a fully fitted kitchen – with SMEG appliances; cushy, modern bed(s) and bathroom; and plush, lounge area featuring a dreamy, pastel pink sofa. Meanwhile, Leman Locke’s onsite restaurant and bar, Treves & Hyde, is a warm welcome to all-day dining and lounging, in the comfort of natural stone, ceramic, brass, timber, concrete and blackened steel fixtures on a bold, minimal palette.
