Customer Story: TrooRa Magazine

Oct 26th, 2022 by Sara Napier Burkhard

TrooRa Magazine is a black woman-owned publication founded by Trystanne Cunningham in 2018. Taking pride in giving a voice and platform to emerging brands, undiscovered artists, and underrepresented entrepreneurs, Cunningham's vision to guide these up-and-coming groups is at the forefront of TrooRa as a digital and print publication and more. Each meticulously curated issue highlights the work of artists and businesses who otherwise might remain unseen or unheard. The publication introduces its readers to a well-rounded lifestyle and refined aesthetic, encouraging interaction and introspection.

You can enjoy several articles and editorials throughout their publications on Issuu, and readers can purchase the magazine to view it in its entirety. This helps provide value and protects top-tier content. The digital version is infused with interactive elements like shoppable ads through QR Codes and website links, making it a perfect companion to the original print version.

Cunningham heads a global team of designers, editors, and writers working to deliver content that connects with and informs well beyond the page. Showcasing developing businesses, passionate minority entrepreneurs, and underrepresented talent, TrooRa Magazine achieves its goal of sparking curiosity and becoming both a global and local guide to its readers. Here are a few of our favorite issues from TrooRa.

The Color Issue Summer '22

The Color Issue is a refresh for the magazine. Founder Trystanne Cunningham takes over as Editor-in-Chief and opens with a thoughtful letter about the exciting future of the magazine.

Several products and collections are announced within the issue. An excellent example of the types of products featured is the handbag collection by Benjamin Babadi, which won't be available until winter 2022. Their placement in The Color Issue Summer '22 is one of many examples of how TrooRa invites its audience to get involved and stay in the know.

  • Noteworthy: Article Stories – TrooRa uses the Article Stories feature to give you a behind-the-scenes look at individual articles featured in each of their sleek magazine issues. In The Color Issue Summer '22, the Letter from the Editor is shared as an Article Story.

The Winter Fashion Issue

Well-designed and carefully considered, each issue introduces a new idea, artist, or product to explore. As you flip through the pages, you'll find inspiration from the featured customers to the products, as TrooRa Magazine offers its readers the opportunity to learn more and purchase from the featured products.

In the Winter Fashion Issue '21, a particular focus is placed on undiscovered brands and talent. Brands like Desserto, a brand intent on replacing leather with the world's first cactus-based alternative, and creatives like fashion expert-turned-pastry chef Olga Noskova are changing trends in their industries. And fitting with its winter timeline, the issue features home decor ideas and concepts for the season from Stephanie Wolhuter Inggs.

  • Noteworthy: Shoppable Ads – The print version of TrooRa uses websites and QR codes to help readers shop for the items in their ads. In the digital version, they can take it a step further and add shopping links to the entire page, making it easy to click the ads and learn more about the goods or services, then purchase them within a few clicks.

The San Francisco Issue

As the magazine is currently based in San Francisco, the San Francisco Issuu was a turning point for TrooRa Magazine. This stunning publication spotlights local entrepreneurs, designers, and other creators as an ode to the Bay Area creators. The result was an eccentric, cosmopolitan journey that embodies the heart of one of the world's favorite cities.

The cover shoot grabs your attention with a feature of a San Francisco-based designer's bespoke jeweled masks. So eye-catching, the featured shoot warranted two cover images.

In addition to the moody jewel-toned cover shoot, the Fashion section also showcases designer Jad Racha's bridal collections. The issue takes a tour through the city with features of the company Arbor Upcycle, which goes into how their tree salvage initiative and milling operation turns fallen neighborhood trees into beautiful pieces. You also get a taste of the local food scene with featured Chef Ravi Kapur of Liholiho Yacht Club and how his work fuses "local" food and Hawaiian flavor, a spotlight on Chef Suzette Gresham of Michelin star-awarded restaurant Acquerello, and Daniel Azarkman, owner of San Francisco's Spanish tapas favorite, El Lopo.

  • Noteworthy: Digital Sales – TrooRa uses Issuu to sell a digital version of its magazines online. This works well for special editions of the magazine like TrooRa's San Francisco Issue, which featured two commemorative covers.
