Aviation leaders assemble in Istanbul for IATA’s 79th AGM

The leaders of the global aviation industry gathered in Istanbul, Türkiye, for the 79th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit.

The event attracted the industry’s most senior leaders from among IATA’s more than 300 member airlines, as well as senior government officials, strategic partners, equipment suppliers, and media.

“Aviation is important. Connecting the world even as geopolitical divides deepen is a vital mission that requires profitable, safe, efficient and sustainable airlines. The outcomes of this AGM must set the direction for even more effective global connectivity,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Now aviation comes together to debate vital issues concerning our pathway to net-zero CO2 in 2050, the diversity of our industry, our operational recovery from the depths of COVID, and many other topics.”

advances in sustainability; learnings from the 2022 operational challenges

A highlight was the fourth edition of the Diversity and Inclusion Awards sponsored by Qatar Airways. These awards recognize organizations and individuals who are making a difference in helping to drive the industry’s 25by2025 initiative to make the aviation industry more gender balanced.

This was the second time that the AGM is hosted in Istanbul, which last hosted in 2008. Türkiye is rebounding strongly from the pandemic shut down. In 2022 travel to/from Türkiye increased nearly 60% and it is now the 7th largest

international passenger market in the world.

“Since we were last in Istanbul, Türkiye has become an incredible global aviation powerhouse. Its carriers are leading the way in regional and international connectivity, and the magnificent new airport puts some other nations’ lack of airport investment to shame. There’s no doubt that Türkiye’s importance to global aviation will continue to grow significantly,” said Walsh.

Willie Walsh reports on the aviation industry

Airlines are en route to a profitable and sustainable future, says IATA, Director General, Willie Walsh.

“The pandemic years are behind us, and borders are open as normal. Despite economic uncertainties, people are flying to reconnect, explore, and do business. Latest data show passenger traffic at over 90% of 2019 levels. Airports are busier, hotel occupancy is rising, local economies are reviving, and the airline industry has moved into profitability.

Financial Performance

Margins are, however, wafer thin. With $803 billion of revenues, airlines will share $9.8 billion in net profit this year. Put another way, airlines will make, on average, $2.25 per passenger. So, the value retained by airlines for the average plane trip won’t even buy a subway ticket in NYC. Clearly that level of profitability is not sustainable. But

considering we lost $76 per passenger in 2020, the velocity of the recovery is strong. Challenges remain. Inflation continues, cost pressure is acute, and in some areas, labour is in short supply. Unfortunately, many of those we do business with are adding to these pressures.

• OEM suppliers have been far too slow in dealing with supply chain blockages that are both raising costs and limiting our ability to deploy aircraft. Airlines are beyond frustrated. A solution must be found.

• Oil companies did very well on our tab while the crack spread for jet fuel was at historic highs for most of 2022 until April this year.

• And there are grievous examples of some airports and ANSPs shifting the costs of their inefficiency to airlines.

On this point, I can now confirm that Schiphol Airport has no shame. After a selfmade operational disaster in 2022 the airport continues its three-year 37% charges hike – with 12% this year.

In South Africa, airports want a 38% charges increase, only to be outdone by ATC demands for a 63% hike.

And, back to Europe, airlines are paying for a EUR1.9 billion addition to the air traffic management cost base in 2022. You’d expect good performance. But delays were triple what was anticipated. And capacity and environment targets were missed. With such bad behaviour on open display, calls for lighter touch economic regulation of our monopoly suppliers must not be taken seriously by any government.

Considering these many challenges, that airlines are turning a profit at the industry level is truly impressive.

Safety

We can also be impressed by the industry’s safety record. This year marks 20 years of the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). In September 2003, Qatar Airways was the first to join the IOSA registry. Today, over 400 airlines are on the registry. It is the global standard for managing operational safety. More importantly, it is clear that IOSA helps to improve safety. In 2022, IOSA registered carriers outperformed those not on the registry by a factor of four. It is never “job done” on safety. So, we are marking two decades of success by making IOSA even more effective with a transition to a riskbased approach.

Of course, IOSA is not the only global standard improving safety. We prevent future accidents by learning from accident reports. But, of the 214 accidents in the last 5 years, only 96 final accident reports are available. This is an inexcusable violation of the Chicago Convention and a disservice to the safety of our passengers and crew. Governments and their agencies must improve.

Efficiency and implementation of global standards

As an industry connecting people and goods across jurisdictions, global standards are at the core of our success—starting with safety and permeating everything we do.

For example, consumers the world over appreciate the ability to purchase air travel in a single currency for any destination in

absolute confidence. That’s achieved with the global standard processes of the IATA Financial Settlement Systems. With half a century of experience and global scale, they are cost effective, safe and reliable. And we are constantly evolving them to deliver the value you expect

•The transformation to modern airline retailing is taking shape. The aim is to make buying air travel as easy as ordering from any online retailer.

•Verifiable digital identity standards enabling all players in the supply chain to interact more efficiently and securely are being developed.

•And, with biometric identification, standards for contactless processes are improving the security and efficiency of the airport experience.

Even if not always top of mind, global standards underpin our ability to connect the world. Unfortunately, that appreciation is not universal among our stakeholders, including governments. Fragmentation is growing because governments are either not acting globally, not implementing completely, or simply inventing local solutions.

Local solutions: passenger rights

Passenger rights is an example of the latter. Over a hundred jurisdictions have developed unique regulations intended to protect air travelers. And at least a dozen governments are looking to join the group or toughen what they already have.

Every journey is not perfect. There are lessons to learn from rare but widely reported incidents where customers were not treated as they should. But governments are going beyond the reasonable.

Europe’s infamous EU 261 passenger rights regulation is a contorting contagion. It penalizes airlines for disruptions— misunderstanding that the huge costs of not operating to schedule are already a major incentive.

Meanwhile, the European Court of Justice continues to transform EU 261 from bad to absurd. Its latest judgement found that the death of a pilot, at an outstation, is not an extraordinary circumstance. Anyone with common sense would certainly wonder who the judges expect to fly the plane!

It should come as no surprise that, nearly two decades after the regulation came to be, consumers are paying more to cover the cost

of compensation, and EU studies show no improvement in delays or cancellations. At the same time, Europe conveniently excuses itself from modernizing air traffic management. The Single European Sky contains the tools to reduce most delays at their source and improve environmental performance.

So we were amazed when the US announced that EU 261 will be the model for its punitive passenger rights regime. That closely followed Canada’s latest innovation on its 261-style regime where the airline is now guilty until proven innocent.

The rotten tomato prize, however, goes to the “pay as you fly” initiative by the EU’s DG Justice. In a misguided initiative to protect travellers, airlines would only receive full payment when the journey is complete. The cashflow impact would be horrendous. And who’s interest will be served by the higher costs and higher fares that will result?

It is a sad reality that we must remind governments should follow the passenger rights principles that they agreed through ICAO, especially on proportionality, and that airlines serve passengers who are firmly in control of the ultimate passenger right – to choose the airline they spend their money with.

Problems also arise when global standards are not implemented as intended. There are two examples: The first is slots. The Worldwide Airport Slot Guidelines (WASG) underpin 43% of all journeys. And European

data show they are effective with a 95% utilization rate and plenty of choice for consumers. Still, some regulators succumb to temptations to “toughen” the rules to be seen to be doing something.

Truth be told, the best way to improve performance is fully utilizing the existing slot guidance provisions. For example, when there are extraordinary situations like COVID19, the flexibility provided to regulators is the quality that keeps them relevant. Flexibility helps airlines meet consumer demand without perverse requirements to fly near empty planes.

Regulators should also insist on honest capacity declarations by all players— including airports, ANSPs, and border control. Inaccurate capacity declarations resulted in chaos at some hubs last year. A repeat performance cannot be permitted. We need rigorous attention on meaningful capacity declarations. Where known staff shortages and airspace restrictions exist, they must be planned into the capacities that airlines are scheduling against, not absorbed by delays or cancellations on the day.

The second example is Schiphol. The Dutch government imposed a 12% capacity cut in a crude effort to manage noise. We won a court challenge because the government didn’t honor its decades-long commitments under the ICAO Balanced Approach on noise management. Consultation was a charade and operational restrictions were the first choice—not the last resort as the Balanced Approach calls for.

The Dutch government is appealing, and we continue to challenge for two reasons. An industry focused on safety cannot accept the

politicization of technical discussions. And ignoring the rules-based order established by global standards is a slippery slope to confusion that we airlines can ill-afford and our customers will not tolerate.

The message is simple. Global standards are key. When fully applied, they improve safety and drive consumer benefits, operational efficiencies and sustainably efforts.

The Importance of acting globally: sustainability

And on sustainability, we have said from the beginning that it is a global challenge that needs a global solution.

At the 41st ICAO Assembly in October 2022 governments agreed a long-term aspirational goal for aviation to achieve net zero emissions by 2050—aligning governments with our net zero by 2050 resolution at the 77th IATA AGM a year earlier. That’s important because governments are now accountable to deliver a global policy framework to achieve net zero by 2050. And even though “aspirational” is a qualifier in LTAG, failure is not an option.

First, IATA has published a series of roadmaps to net zero by 2050. These roadmaps are the first detailed assessment of the key steps necessary to make net zero by 2050 an aviation success—covering technology, infrastructure, operations, finance and policy. They will, of course, evolve as we dig deeper to set interim milestones on the way to net zero.

I must emphasize that the roadmaps are not just for airlines. Governments, suppliers, and

financiers cannot be spectators to the challenge. We all have skin in the game. And each must deliver the products, policies or investments needed to decarbonize.

Expert evaluation is essential. But too often even professional organizations contribute amateur assessments to this important debate. And that helps nobody. The latest that caught my eye, because it received widespread media coverage and is now often quoted, was a recent Royal Society report on resource requirements for net zero aviation fuels.

To underpin their research, they used fuel burn performance data for flights between London and New York for a Boeing 737-300. Yes, you heard me right, a 737-300, an aircraft that went out of production in 1999, flying between London and New York. Now, I’ve flown the 737-300 so I know a bit about it and what I know for certain is you cannot get the minimum of 21 tonnes of fuel that they estimated you would require into the fuel tanks that can only take a maximum of 16 tonnes. So, if we know that that section of the report is rubbish what confidence can we have in the rest of the document?

Decarbonizing aviation is a serious multitrillion-dollar initiative. It must be informed by expert research that can stand up to scrutiny.

And that leads me to a second important development since LTAG. IATA published a global standard methodology to track progress toward net zero. The transparency that accurate tracking will enable is critical to holding ourselves and our stakeholders accountable for what is achieved and what is not in the quest for a truly credible net zero by 2050 target.

Temptations

I’ll say it again. Decarbonizing aviation is a serious issue and governments must not be allowed to use it to shore up exchequer finances.

CORSIA illustrates the risk. The ICAO Assembly increased CORSIA’s financial burden by adjusting the baseline to 85% of 2019 emissions. We accepted this as part of a political compromise to achieve LTAG and with the assurance that CORSIA would be the only economic measure applied to international aviation.

Almost immediately Europe developed amnesia. Not only is it threatening to make EU ETS extra-territorial, but several European states also want to tax jet fuel—in defiance of the Chicago Convention and almost every bilateral air service agreement and of course, undermining the CORSIA agreement that Europe promoted.

And the argument that international aviation is not taxed does not hold water. We analyzed data from almost 7 billion tickets for international flights going back to 2018 which showed that airlines have paid over $380 billion in taxes and charges which added over 33% to the price of a ticket. And if we include domestic flights, that figure of $380 billion rises to half a trillion US dollars. It’s important that policy makers are moved by facts not fictions and it’s heartening that 75% of travelers see green taxes for what they are— nothing more than government greenwashing!

SAF

Of course, our biggest focus is on SAF which will be the biggest contributor to net zero success.

Today’s SAF production is less than 0.1% of what we need for net zero. But the trend is positive. In 2022, SAF production tripled to 300 million litres. And while critics of our industry dismiss that figure as irrelevant, it’s important to remember that airlines used every single drop costing almost $350 million. With the right supportive policies, reaching 30 billion litres by 2030 is challenging but achievable. That would be about 6% of the 450 billion litres annual production capacity we need in 2050. We think it will be the tipping point because achieving it will establish the trajectory needed to scale up for 2050.

Why are we not moving faster? The willingness of airlines to use SAF is definitely not the issue. As I’ve said, every drop of SAF ever produced has been purchased and used. The problem is insufficient production capacity to meet demand.

That’s why we must increase the number of pathways for SAF production and diversify feedstocks—of course while maintaining their sustainability credentials. Doing so will open production opportunities best suited to particular geographical locations. Governments should be jumping over themselves to be first in line for the job creation, local economic stimulus, and biodiversity protection that SAF production brings—significant benefits for both developed and developing economies alike. Unfortunately, the politicians have not made good on their COP 26 promise to stop financing fossil fuels. We’ve not seen a major shift of fossil fuel subsidies to green energy— certainly not for SAF.

The US approach to SAF is the most advanced with a system of tax credits to drive up production levels. This will be more

effective than purchase mandates being considered as far and wide as Singapore, India and Europe. When there is not enough supply, a purchase mandate will drive prices up, stall innovation and limit competition long before supply increases.

And if there is an early policy decision that is needed, it is to establish global standards for a SAF book and claim system that can fairly allocate SAF credits with no double counting. Just as location makes no difference on the impact of CO2 emissions, it has no impact on where SAF is uplifted and used either. A global approach to book and claim for SAF credits will help facilitate economies of scale in SAF production. And it will avoid the longdistance shipping (or even importation) of SAF, which would only degrade its climate credentials.

It is important that we get these basics of energy transition done—production incentives, more diversified production pathways and a book and claim system. Our commitment to net zero by 2050 is fixed and firm. We have the roadmaps for an energy transition. Now we need these tools to get the job done!

Looking ahead

The sustainability challenge is, bar none, the biggest that we will face as leaders of the aviation industry. This will be difficult and take time. As pioneers building the net zero emissions age for aviation, scrutiny of our efforts will be extreme. We must welcome it as a means of telling the impressive story of aviation’s decarbonization and its contributions to society.

In the two hours it takes for our AGM, there will be over a million people experiencing the wonders of air travel. We dedicate ourselves to being profitable, safe, efficient and sustainable because each of those arrivals has every potential to make good things happen in our world.

Emirates to host IATA 2024 AGM in Dubai

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that Emirates will host the 80th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on 2-4 June 2024.

Aviation outlook strengthens

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced an expected strengthening of airline industry profitability in an upgrade of its outlook for 2023.

Willie Walsh, IATA, Director Generals said: “Airline financial performance in 2023 is beating expectations. Stronger profitability is supported by several positive developments. China lifted COVID-19 restrictions earlier in the year than anticipated. Cargo revenues remain above prepandemic levels even though volumes have not. And, on the cost side, there is some relief. Jet fuel prices, although still high, have moderated over the first half of the year.”

The return to net profitability, even with a 1.2% net profit margin, is a major achievement. First, it was achieved at a time of significant economic uncertainties. And second, it follows the deepest losses in aviation’s history ($183.3 billion of net losses for 2020-2022 (inclusive) for an average net profit margin of11.3% over that period). It should be noted that the airline industry entered the COVID-19 crisis at the end of a historic profit streak that saw an average net profit margin of 4.2% for the 2015-2019 period.

“Economic uncertainties have not dampened the desire to travel, even as ticket prices absorbed elevated fuel costs. After deep COVID-19 losses, even a net profit margin of 1.2% is something to celebrate! But with airlines just making $2.25 per passenger on average, repairing damaged balance sheets and providing investors with sustainable returns on their capital will continue to be a challenge for many airlines,” said Walsh.

Outlook drivers

Revenues are rising (9.7%) faster than expenses (8.1%), strengthening profitability.

Industry revenues are expected to reach $803 billion in 2023 (+9.7% on 2022 and -4.1% on 2019). An inventory of 34.4 million flights is expected to be available in 2023 (+24.4% on 2022, -11.5% on 2019).

Passenger revenues are expected to reach $546 billion (+27% on 2022,10% on 2019). With COVID-19 restrictions now removed in all major markets, the industry is expected to reach 87.8% of 2019 levels of revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) for the year with strengthening passenger traffic as the year progresses. The high demand for travel in many markets is keeping yields strong with a modest 1.1% decline expected in 2023 compared to 2022 levels

(following increases of 9.8% in 2022 and 3.7% in 2021).

Efficiency levels are high with an expected average passenger load factor of 80.9% for 2023. That is very near the 2019 record performance of 82.6%.

IATA’s May 2023 passenger polling data supports the optimistic outlook, with 41% of travelers indicating they expect to travel more in the next 12 months than in the previous year and 49% expect to undertake the same level of travel. Moreover, 77% of respondents indicated that they were already traveling as much or more than they did pre-pandemic.

Cargo revenues are expected to be $142.3 billion. While that is down sharply from $210 billion in 2021 and $207 billion in 2022, it is well above the $100 billion earned in 2019. Yields will be negatively impacted by two factors: (1) the ramping-up of passenger capacity which automatically increases available belly capacity for cargo and (2) the potential negative effects on international trade of economic cooling measures introduced to fight inflation. Yields are expected to correct with a 28.6% decline this year, but still remain high by all historical comparisons. Note that yield increases of 54.7% were recorded in 2020, 25.9% in 2021 and 7.4% in 2022.

Expenses are expected to grow to $781 billion (+8.1% on 2022 and1.8% on 2019).

Jet fuel costs are expected to average $98.5/barrel in 2023 for a total fuel bill of $215 billion. That is cheaper than the $111.9 / barrel previously expected (December 2022) and the average cost of $135.6 experienced in 2022.

High crude oil prices were exaggerated for airlines as the crack spread (premium paid to refine crude oil into jet fuel) averaged more than 34% for 2022— significantly above the long-run average. As a result, fuel was responsible for almost 30% of total expenses. In recent months, the

crack spread has narrowed, and the full year average crack spread is expected to fall to around 23%, which is more closely aligned with the historical average rate. Fuel costs will account for 28% of the average cost structure, which is still above the 24% of 2019.

Non-Fuel expenses have been controlled well by airlines despite inflationary pressures. With fixed costs being distributed over a larger scale of activity, non-fuel unit costs per available tonne kilometre (ATK) are expected to fall to 39 cents per ATK. That is -6.4% compared to 2022 (41.7 cents /ATK) and marks a return to about pre-COVID levels. Total non-fuel costs are expected to reach $565 billion in 2023.

Risks

The economic and geopolitical environment presents several risks to the outlook.

With just $22.4 billion of operating profit (2.8%) standing between $803 billion of revenues and $781 billion in expenses, industry profitability is fragile and could be affected (positively or negatively) by a number of factors. In particular, consideration should be given to:

Inflation fighting measures are maturing at different rates in different markets. Central banks are calibrating the best levels for interest rates to have a maximum cooling effect on inflation while avoiding tipping economies into recession. An early or lower end to rate rises could stimulate markets for a stronger year-end outlook. Equally, the risk of recession remains. Should recession lead to job losses, the industry’s

outlook could shift negatively.

War in Ukraine is not having a major impact on profitability for most airlines. A currently unanticipated peace could carry the potential for cost improvements with lower oil prices and efficiencies from the removal or easing of airspace restrictions. An escalation, however, would likely have negative prospects for global aviation. Already broader geopolitical tensions are weighing upon international trade and any escalation of such tensions represents a downside risk to the industry outlook.

in resilience caused by current geopolitical tensions and the challenges experienced during COVID-19. Airlines have been directly impacted by aircraft parts supply chain ruptures which aircraft and engine manufacturers have failed to sort out. This is negatively impacting the delivery of new aircraft and the ability of airlines to maintain and deploy existing fleets.

Regulatory cost burdens are at risk of increase from increasingly interventionist regulators. In particular, the industry could face rising costs of compliance for increasingly punitive passenger rights regimes and regional environment initiatives.

Regional round up

While the global airline industry is expected to return to profitability in 2023, financial performance across regions remains diverse. The positive news is that industry financials are improving in all regions from the COVID-related depths of 2020, although not all regions are expected to deliver a profit this year.

North American carriers

North America remains the standout region in terms of financial performance. Consumer spending has remained solid, despite cost-of-living pressures, and the demand for air travel remains robust; air passenger demand is forecast to exceed its pre-COVID (2019) level this year.

European carriers

Notwithstanding the various capacity constraints experienced over the summer period, European carriers were able to return to profit in 2022. That profitability will strengthen further in 2023. The key regional risks relate to the war in Ukraine, labor unrest and concerns about economic performance in some key countries.

Asia-Pacific carriers

Now that all economies in the region have lifted COVID travel restrictions, the industry recovery is underway. A sharp rise in both passenger volumes and capacity is expected to be reflected in a sizeable improvement in 2023 financial results and a narrowing of the gap to other regions.

Middle East carriers

The region’s return to profitability in 2022 was supported by a significant increase in the passenger load factor of almost 25 percentage points, outstripping the performance of the other regions. At the same time, Middle East carriers have been swiftly rebuilding their international networks and in March 2023, the region’s international connectivity had returned to 98% of its pre-COVID level.

Latin America carriers

Passenger volumes are recovering quickly, but the financial performance varies considerably across the region. The region will remain in the red, although some airlines are expected to post solid profits. Overall, industry financial performance is expected to continue to improve, but a challenging economic backdrop in a number of countries in the region is dampening the pace of recovery.

African carriers

Africa remains a difficult market in which to operate an airline, with economic, infrastructure and connectivity challenges impacting the industry performance. Nonetheless, despite these challenges, there is still robust demand for air travel in the region which underpins the continued move towards a return to overall industry profitability.

2022 review

The improvement in industry financial performance in 2022 outpaced previous expectations. Net industry losses for 2022 are now estimated to be -$3.6 billion, a strengthening from the previously estimated -$6.9 billion loss (December 2022). At the operating level, and notwithstanding the wide variation in performance, the latest data point to the industry having returned to profit in 2022 on a pre-tax basis.

Bottom line

“Resilience is the story of the day and there are many good reasons for optimism. Achieving profitability at an industry level after the depths of the COVID-19 crisis opens up much potential for airlines to reward investors, fund sustainability, and invest in efficiencies to connect the world even more effectively. That’s a big ‘to do’ list to achieve with just a 1.2% net profit margin. That’s why we call on governments to keep their focus on initiatives that will strengthen safe, sustainable, efficient, and profitable connectivity,” said Walsh.

“Priorities for 2023 include SAF production incentives to accelerate progress toward net zero carbon emissions, ensuring the integrity of CORSIA as the economic measure applied to international aviation, eliminating inefficiencies in air traffic management and applying global standards consistently,” said Walsh.

Passengers are counting on a safe, sustainable, efficient and profitable airline industry. A recent IATA poll of travellers in 11 global markets revealed that 81% of those surveyed emerged from the pandemic with a greater appreciation of the freedom that flying makes possible.

IATA unveils net zero roadmap

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) unveiled a series of roadmaps aimed at providing step-by-step detailing of critical actions and dependencies for aviation to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

These roadmaps address aircraft technology, energy infrastructure, operations, finance, and policy considerations leading to net zero.

With the adoption of a LongTerm Aspirational Goal (LTAG) at ICAO’s 41st Assembly, governments and industry are aligned to reach the same net zero CO2 emissions goal by 2050. As policy initiatives lay the foundation on which many of the needed innovations and actions will rest, these

roadmaps will be a critical reference point for policy makers.

“The roadmaps are the first detailed assessment of the key steps necessary to accelerate the transition to net zero by 2050. Together, they show a clear direction and will evolve as we dig deeper to set interim milestones on the way to net zero. I must emphasize that the roadmaps are not just for airlines. Governments, suppliers, and financiers cannot be spectators in aviation’s decarbonization journey. They have skin in the game. The roadmaps are a call to action for all aviation's stakeholders to deliver the tools needed to make this fundamental transformation of aviation a success with policies and products fit for a net-zero world,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

The roadmaps were not developed in isolation. A peerto-peer review, complemented by a modeling tool provided by the Air Transportation Systems Laboratory at University College London (UCL), was conducted

to calculate emission reductions for each technology.

Highlights of each roadmap include:

•Aircraft Technology: the development of more efficient aircraft and engines. Particularly important are the steps needed to enable aircraft powered by 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen or batteries. All development milestones are backed-up by announced investment and demonstrator programs. Also included are new engines, aerodynamics, aircraft structures, and flight systems.

•Energy and New Fuels

Infrastructure: the focus is on the fuels and new energy carrier infrastructure upstream from airports needed to facilitate the use of aircraft powered by SAF or hydrogen. Renewable energy plays a vital role in meeting the aviation sector's energy demand, and the roadmap outlines milestones to enable the necessary infrastructure developments.

•Operations: the opportunities for reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency by improving the way existing aircraft are operated. Automation, big data management, and the integration of new technologies are key enablers for optimizing air traffic management and enhancing the overall efficiency of the air transportation system.

•Policy: the need for globally aligned strategic policies to provide incentives and support for the aviation industry's transition to a net-zero future. As with all other successful energy transitions, collaboration between governments and industry stakeholders is crucial in creating the necessary framework to achieve the decarbonization goals.

•Finance: how to finance the cumulative $5 trillion needed for aviation to achieve net zero by 2050. This includes technological advancements, infrastructure developments, and operational improvements.

The challenges to ramp up SAF production are a good illustration of the importance of these roadmaps. As a drop-in solution, SAF is expected to deliver about 62% of carbon mitigation needed to achieve net zero by 2050. But even though SAF is expected to be fully implementable with future aircraft fleet, it still has major interdependencies on policy, aircraft technology, energy infrastructure, financing, and operations for which these roadmaps are critical.

“The roadmaps show where all stakeholders should focus their efforts. There are two certainties. By 2050 we need to be at net zero carbon emissions. And the steps to get there that are outlined in these roadmaps will evolve as the industry’s expertise grows. Policy is particularly important early on as it, to a large extent, sets the scene for private sector investors to move. With that, the private sector can decarbonize at scale and with speed,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, SVP Sustainability and Chief Economist at IATA.

“Without the right policy incentives and bold investments, many of the technologies and innovations simply won’t happen at scale. Everything is related, and that is why we have the five roadmaps to tie all the parallel elements together and give our stakeholders, including governments, a complete understanding of everything that needs to happen,” said Owens Thomsen.

“Time is of the essence, as highlighted by these roadmaps. Immediate action is required to commercialize scalable zero-carbon energy storage solutions along with the required infrastructure, and to build a business case for their rapid delivery at Gigawatt scale,” said Prof. Andreas Schafer, Director of UCL’s Air Transport Systems Laboratory.

Emirates unveils new closed loop recycling initiative to reduce plastic

Emirates is unveiling a new closed loop recycling initiative this month, where millions of onboard items such as plastic trays, bowls, snack and casserole dishes, will now be recycled in a local facility and remade into fresh, ready-touse Emirates meal service products.

Emirates is introducing the new recycled utensils onboard from June 2023 onwards.

In line with Emirates’ commitment to consuming responsibly, the new initiative is a transition to the principles of a circular economy, whereby items are reduced, reused, and recycled. Millions of old and damaged meal service items from Economy and Premium Economy Class dining will be collected after flights, washed and checked for damage, transported to a facility in Dubai to be ground down, reprocessed, and manufactured into new dishes, bowls and trays – before being sent to Emirates Flight Catering to be used again for thousands of meals in the sky.

In partnership with deSter FZE UAE, a leading provider of serviceware concepts to the aviation industry, and expert in closed loop manufacturing, Emirates will be reusing plastic materials that have already reached their end of life and would otherwise need to be written off. The new trays,

casseroles, snack dishes and bowls, potentially containing around 25% reused material (recyclate), will be brought back into service on aircraft across the globe, and the proportion will continue to increase over time.

The team at deSter are members of the CE100 network, which includes some of the world’s leading circular economy companies and have also been awarded the ‘Gold’ Sustainability rating from Ecovadis – a globally recognised certification for sustainable practices. Emirates elected to work with deSter once a facility in UAE was ready to facilitate the huge scale of Emirates’ requirement – substantially reducing the carbon footprint of sending the products to another country to be recycled. The deSter factory also incorporates sustainable design principles focusing on solar power, efficient use of water and minimisation of waste.

The international respect for Poppy Khoza was evident in her unanimous election to serve as President for the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2022. She was the first ever woman to hold that role in ICAO’s 78-year history. At SACAA, Khoza’s work focuses on providing equal opportunities for women and she has led the transformation of the organization which now boasts women in 50% of executive roles. In her work, Khoza spares no effort in mentoring and coaching other women to challenge the status quo and create a more gender balanced aviation industry.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Aviation Sector and Regional Leader Award, Best Chief Executive Officer Award (2015 and 2018). She was also named the Business Leader of the Year during the annual Oliver Empowerment Awards (2018).

Camila Turrieta – Chair of the Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion Committee, Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), and First Officer, JetBlue Airways

Star Alliance, the world’s first and largest global airline alliance, has announced that Theo Panagiotoulias has been chosen to become its next CEO.

Panagiotoulias has more than 25 years’ international experience in the airline and aviation industry. He joins Star Alliance from Hawaiian Airlines, where he had been Senior VP for Global Sales and Alliances since 2014. Previously, he was VP and GM (Asia Pacific) at travel technology provider Sabre Corporation, as well as a 15year veteran of American

Airlines, where he held several commercial, operational and management positions.

IATA urges states to improve accident reports

The International Air Transport Association called on governments to live up to longstanding international treaty obligations to publish timely and thorough aviation accident reports. Safety is aviation’s highest priority.

Failure to publish prompt and complete accident investigation reports deprives operators, equipment manufacturers, regulators, infrastructure providers and other concerned stakeholders of critical information that could make flying even safer.

“The accident investigation process is one of our most

important learning tools when building global safety standards. But to learn from an accident, we need reports that are complete, accessible and timely,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

The requirements of the Convention of International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention) Annex 13 are clear. States in

charge of an accident investigation must: Submit a preliminary report to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) within 30 days of the accident

Publish the final report, that is publicly available, as soon as possible and within 12 months of the accident.

Publish interim statements annually should a final report not be possible within 12 months.

Only 96 of the 214 accident investigations during the period 20182022 conform with the requirements of the Chicago Convention. Just 31 reports were published in less than one year of the accident with the majority (58) taking between 1–3 years. In addition to the fact that final reports regularly take more than

a year, interim statements often provide little more than what was presented in the preliminary report.

“Over the past five years, fewer than half of the required accident reports meet the standards for thoroughness and timeliness. This is an inexcusable violation of requirements stated clearly in the Chicago Convention. As an industry we must raise our voice to governments in defence of the accident investigation process enshrined in Annex 13. And we count on ICAO to remind states that the publication of a complete accident report is not optional, it is an obligation under Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention,” said Walsh.

Vietnam Airlines and Turkish Airlines announce codeshare agreement

Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlines have signed a codeshare agreement to enable both carriers to provide more flexibility on sectors between Turkey, Vietnam and beyond.

This reciprocal arrangement will allow Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlinesto provide seamless connections to their passengers. Turkish Airlines will use its code “TK” on Vietnam Airlines operated flights between Hanoi – Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City – Da Nang. Similarly, Vietnam Airlines will place its code “VN” on Istanbul - Hanoi and Istanbul - Ho Chi Minh flights.

Turkish Airlines’ CEO Mr. Bilal EKŞİ stated: “Both flag carriers enhanced their solid collaboration via signing this codeshare agreement. As a result, more passengers will be able to visit these two unique and beautiful countries, Türkiye and Vietnam. Also, with the increasing capacity and product variety in the forthcoming future, this agreement will provide a significant contribution to both airlines.”

Vietnam Airlines’ CEO Mr. Le Hong Ha stated: “The codeshare agreement between two airlines will bring more options and attractive benefits to passengers, as well as contribute greatly to route network expansion and service diversification of Vietnam Airlines and Turkish Airlines. The cooperation will promote economic, cultural and tourism exchanges between Vietnam and Türkiye, as more passengers will be able to visit the two countries conveniently.”

Etihad Airways achieved a 26% reduction in CO2 emissions per Revenue Tonne Kilometre (RTK) to 482g compared to 2019 baseline, by continuing to innovate and introduce operational efficiencies.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has published its annual sustainability report, detailing the company's commitment to sustainability and its progress towards its sustainability goals.

In 2022, the airline achieved an impressive 26% reduction in CO2 emissions per Revenue Tonne Kilometre (RTK) to 482g compared to 2019 baseline.

Etihad’s sustainability strategy is based on principles of achieving emissions reductions through in-sector measures, aligning with industry voluntary roadmaps and frameworks, collaborating with UAE industrial ecosystems, remaining transparent and proactive about sustainability issues, and continually developing a strategic roadmap for targets.

Etihad was the first foreign airline to receive SAF supply in Japan, in partnership with ITOCHU Corporation and Neste MY Sustainable Fuel. The flight, operated in Q4 of 2022, was the first delivery of c.50,000USG of Neste produced fuel, reducing approximately 75 tCO2 at a 39.66% blend.

Etihad continued to work with key UAE stakeholders such as ADNOC, Masdar and Tadweer to develop SAF production capability in the UAE.

Signed an MoU with World Energy, establishing a long-term strategic partnership to decarbonize flights through in-sector emissions reductions.

The first day of the meeting involved workshops, presentations and discussions on various relevant topics with the participation of working groups from Flight Operations, Flight Data Forum, Ground Operations, Cabin Safety and Helicopters. The workshops allowed participants to present, share and discuss best practice and safety related matters in a confidential environment. Additionally, they provided an opportunity to network, exchange

information and experiences, as well as discuss safety matters specific to the postCOVID era.

The second and final day of the meeting included presentations from each subgroup covering their key focus areas, including ‘Global Aerospace Safety Initiatives’ by Boeing; and ‘Global Data Management Program, Incident Database Analysis, Flight Data Exchange Analysis, Benefits to Operators and Safety Enhancement Initiatives’ by IATA. Captain Fahd Cynndy, the GFSA Chairman and CEO of SAEI, presented ‘MRO Safety and its Relationship with the Aviation Ecosystem’. Meanwhile, Captain Waheed Al Subhi, Senior Manager – Safety and Emergency Response Planning, presented Oman Air’s fleet, achievements, and safety challenges. An engaging panel discussion was conducted on the challenges of Safety Management System implementation, safety leadership, and change management.

The Gulf Flight Safety Association was originally founded in Oman in 2004 by a group of Gulf-based safety professionals from various aviation companies located within the GCC region. The group meets quarterly to discuss safety improvement initiatives, as well as coordinating with international bodies like IATA and ICAO.

Qatar Airways inks SAP deal with Shell

Qatar Airways, winner of ‘World’s Leading Airline 2022’ at World Travel Awards, signs a deal with Shell for 3,000 metric tonnes of neat SAF at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

Qatar Airways has signed a deal with Shell to source 3,000 metric tonnes of neat Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Amsterdam Schiphol airport. It encompasses the existing jet fuel contract with Shell at Amsterdam which will now see Qatar Airways using at least a 5 per cent SAF blend over the contract period for the fiscal year 2023-2024. The Qatar Airways bilateral agreement with Shell is part of a wider effort initiated by the oneworld alliance, which has a set target of using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for 10% of combined fuel volumes by 2030.

Qatar Airways is the first carrier in the Middle East and Africa to procure a large SAF amount in Europe beyond government SAF mandates. SAF

offers significant potential for decarbonisation as neat SAF can reduce full lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.[1] This means that Qatar Airways will be reducing its emissions on flights from Amsterdam by approximately 7,500 tonnes of CO2 for the fiscal year.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “At Qatar Airways, we are strongly committed to supporting the industry’s effort to ramp-up the use of sustainable aviation fuel, as one of the key pillars to decarbonise the aviation industry. Last year, we signed our first offtake agreement in the US, and now we are placing a multi-million US dollar SAF deal in Amsterdam to illustrate our SAF commitment and reiterate our calls for a more robust SAF supply chain across our global network”.

“We remain steadfast in our ambitious target of 10 per cent SAF use by 2030 and this announcement, establishes another landmark for Qatar Airways that underlines the positive outcome of the industry’s collaboration which is critical to accelerating the SAF supply and

achieving our target. SAF is still 3 to 5 times more expensive than fossil-based jet fuel. “Qatar Airways and Shell have a history of collaboration, so it is fantastic to now work together on decarbonisation as we supply them with SAF for the first time,” said Mr. Jan Toschka, President of Shell Aviation. “SAF is a key lever for decarbonising aviation, but scaling its supply and use requires concerted action from across the aviation sector. Today’s agreement is a great example of the collaborative actions that are required to help accelerate aviation’s progress towards net zero.”

Passengers and customers of Qatar Airways are able today to compensate for their flight emissions through the purchase of high-quality carbon credits, credited under International Civil Aviation Organization criteria, the UN's aviation body. Qatar Airways currently invests in carbon

credit projects that generate renewable energy, which help in reducing carbon emissions. Qatar Airways is also working on introducing a solution which will allow passengers and customers to offset their emissions by contributing to the cost of SAF.

Riyadh Air unveils new livery

Saudi Arabia’s new national airline, Riyadh Air has unveiled the first of the two liveries.

HRH Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Public Investment Fund (“PIF”), announced the establishment of Riyadh Air in March 2023. The new national carrier aims to leverage Saudi Arabia’s strategic geographic location between the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe, enabling Riyadh to become a gateway to the world and a global destination for transportation, trade, and tourism.

The airline has placed an order of up to 72 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes in a multibillion dollar deal. This unprecedented order for a new carrier – 39 confirmed aircraft with an option to acquire 33 additional wide-body 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes – is a strong signal of intent for Saudi Arabia to become a global aviation hub.

This agreement is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider strategic plan to transform the country into a global aviation hub. In total, national carriers today announced their intent to purchase up to 121 787 Dreamliners in what will be the fifth largest commercial order by value in Boeing’s history. This will support the country’s goal of serving 330 million passengers and attracting 100 million visits by 2030.

Riyadh Air will be chaired by His Excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of PIF, while Tony Douglas, who brings more than 40 years of

IATA expands Turbulence Aware Platform

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that ANA and WestJet have joined its Turbulence Aware Platform on the sidelines of the 79th IATA Annual General Meeting.

Turbulence Aware was launched in 2018 to help airlines mitigate the impact of turbulence which is a leading cause of passenger and crew injuries and higher fuel costs each year. The platform pools anonymized turbulence data from thousands of flights operated by participating airlines. The real-time, accurate information enables pilots and dispatchers to choose optimal flight paths, avoiding turbulence and flying at optimum levels to maximize fuel efficiency and thereby reduce CO2 carbon emissions.

The challenge of managing turbulence is expected to grow as climate change continues to impact weather patterns. This has implications for both safety and efficiency of flight. Turbulence Aware is a significant improvement in turbulence reporting and avoiding excess fuel consumption.

At present, 20 airlines participate in the IATA Turbulence Aware Platform with more than 1,900 aircraft providing data daily. In 2022, a total of 31 million reports were generated.

ANA will start providing data from nine aircraft as of 1 July 2023, with the aim of increasing this to 125 aircraft in the next three years.

WestJet is already capturing data from 24 aircraft and will expand this to 60 aircraft in the coming three years.

Air France’s new standard o coming soon to the Airbus A

Air France has offered an exclusive first look at its brand-new Business seat.

Featuring the highest industry standards in terms in comfort and on-board technology, the seat features a sliding door that allows passengers to create a totally private space, and the seat transforms into a full-flat bed measuring nearly two metres in length.

This seat, developed exclusively for Air France, will be available on the new Airbus A350s that will join the company’s long-haul fleet between now and 2025. In this new configuration, the Airbus A350 will feature new cabins across all travel classes – 48 Business seats, 32 Premium Economy seats and 212 Economy seats.

With this latest strategic development in its move upmarket, Air France is

pursuing the roll-out of its most advanced travel standards to date in terms of in-flight comfort, building on what the company has already put in place on 12 Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft.

In total, Air France has ordered 41 Airbus A350-900s, which are being delivered at a constant pace. The company has already received 20 of these aircraft. The 21st A350, named “Aix-en-Provence” will be the first to feature this new cabin configuration and will make its first commercial flight in July 2023.

The design of the 48 spacious Business seats is based on the “three Fs” concept – Full Flat, meaning that the seat transforms into a real bed 53 cm wide and almost 2 metres long; Full Access, providing all passengers with direct access to the aisle; and Full Privacy, ensuring optimal seclusion.

A personal storage unit comes equipped with a noisecancelling headset, a vanity

mirror and space for customers’ belongings. A second storage area has also been added at the foot of the seat with enough room to store a small travel accessory.

The Business cabin’s front row seats also offer extra space in front for additional comfort. Furthermore, each front row seat features a personal closet with a vanity mirror and extra storage space.

Constantly evolving to offer the highest travel standards on the market, Air France has equipped its latest Business seat with the most cuttingedge technology. British Airways release Travel Trends Report

British Airways Holidays has released its Travel Trends Report, giving an insight into the attitudes that are influencing the current travel landscape, and how these have changed in the last three years.

The tour operator has combined British Airways Holidays insight with that of industry experts, including renowned travel journalists and spokespeople from Marriott and Mr and Mrs Smith, along with UK consumer data to reveal what travellers are seeking from their holidays today.

The report has identified seven key areas for 2023, with statistics including:

•All-inclusive is in vogue: 41% of millennials plan to take an all-inclusive holiday in 2023, more than any other generation

•Seizing the day: Travel is a nonnegotiable spend for consumers, with two-thirds saying that travel has become more precious after the pandemic. 63% of consumers say that holidays are the main way they treat themselves

•The best of both worlds: Travel is no longer exclusively about relaxation or adventure. Consumers are seeking a combination of both. More than half of adventurous travellers want to spend time with loved ones on holiday

•Conscious consumers: A quarter of UK travellers have taken fewer but longer holidays in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. The average holidaymaker plans to spend 18 days abroad in just 2.1 trips

•Luxury redefined: Luxury is more about once-in-a-lifetime experiences than it is about 5* hotels, say 45% of consumers

•Control: Consumers are balancing their

desire to live for the moment with a need for tighter holiday planning. All-inclusive hotels and holiday packages are the antidote to unexpected costs. It is younger consumers who are embracing this

British Airways has also resumed flights from London to Beijing, after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The resumption reclaims the airline’s exclusivity as the only British carrier operating a direct service between Beijing and the UK.

Flights will operate four-times-a-week between Beijing and London, departing Daxing Airport on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

British Airways and joint business partner China Southern both operate from Daxing,

giving customers greater connectivity between the UK and China, with easier transfers, a wider choice of onward flights and enhanced benefits. Frequent flyer benefits through the joint business, include greater opportunities to collect points, the ability to book through both airlines’ websites or apps, enhanced lounge access and access to high-quality Chinese and British products and services in the air and on the ground.

IAFCAC and AASA join forces with IATA on Focus Africa

The International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) “Focus Africa” drive is gaining momentum, spurred on by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) as its newest partners.

Focus Africa will strengthen aviation’s contribution to Africa’s economic and social development and improve connectivity, safety and reliability for passengers and shippers. It will see private and public stakeholders deliver measurable progress in six critical areas: safety, infrastructure, connectivity, finance and distribution, sustainability and skills development.

“Focus Africa is all about establishing a coalition of partners committing to pool

their resources and delivering a set of African air transport solutions that let the continent, its people and economies play a greater, more meaningful and representative role in the global economy. The combined contributions of AFCAC and AASA will be critical to Focus Africa’s success. Ethiopian Airlines boost fleet as African presence grows

The carrier, the largest airline in Africa, has announced that it has taken delivery of its 20th A350-900 aircraft from Airbus.

The delivery flight used 30 per cent blend Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) thus reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to the ambition set by IATA, ATAG and ICAO to reach “net zero carbon emissions by 2050”. The airplane also carried ten tonnes of humanitarian shipment into Ethiopia.

Regarding the flight, Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive, Mesfin Tasew, said: “We are glad to receive our 20th brand new A350 aircraft from Airbus. This is another historical first for Ethiopian Airlines as it is our first flight operated with sustainable aviation fuel in cooperation with Airbus, demonstrating our commitment to realizing a sustainable air transport industry. The humanitarian shipment the ferry flight carried also signifies our commitment to discharge our social responsibility. We will continue to invest in fulfilling our corporate social responsibility by reducing carbon emissions and transporting humanitarian shipments going forward.”

With the new delivery of the A350, Ethiopian Airlines operates 144 modern aircraft to more than

150 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations across five continents.

“The A350-900 has proven to be instrumental in Ethiopian Airlines fleet strategy, offering unrivalled operational flexibility and efficiency and best in class passenger comfort. The delivery of this A350-900 powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) marks yet another milestone in our relationship; working together to reduce carbon emissions across the aviation industry,” said Mikail Houari, president Airbus Africa Middle East.

Airbus A350-900, Boeing 737s, 777s, 787s, and Bombardier Dash 8-400 double cabin are among the modern and environmentally friendly aircraft Ethiopian has in its fleet.

SAF production needs policy support to diversify sources

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced its expectation for overall renewable fuel production to reach an estimated capacity of at least 69 billion litres (55 million tonnes) by 2028.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) will comprise a portion of this growing output which is being achieved through new renewable fuel refineries and the expansion of existing facilities. Importantly, the expected production has a wide geographic footprint covering North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

“The expected production increase is extremely encouraging. Seeing this, we need governments to act to ensure that SAF gets its fair production share. That means, in the first instance, production incentives, to support aviation’s energy transition. And we need continued approval for more diversification of methods and feedstocks available for SAF production. With these two measures successfully in place, we can be confident that the expected 2028 production levels will be realistically aligned with our recently published roadmaps to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. That is important as we are counting on SAF to provide about 62% of the carbon mitigation needed in 2050,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Trends supporting this optimistic outlook are already visible. In 2022, SAF production tripled to some 300 million litres (240,000 tonnes) and project announcements for potential SAF producers are rapidly growing. IATA counts over 130 relevant renewable fuel projects announced by more than 85 producers across 30 countries. Each of these projects has either announced the intent or commitment to produce SAF within their wider product slate of renewable fuels. Typically, there is a 3 –5-year lag between a project announcement and its

commercialization date. This implies that further renewable fuel capacity out until 2030 could still be announced over the following years.

If renewable energy production reaches 69 billion litres by 2028 as estimated, the trajectory to 100 billion litres (80 million tonnes) by 2030 would be on track. If just 30% of that produced SAF, the industry could achieve 30 billion litres (24 million tonnes) of SAF production by 2030.

“Achieving the necessary SAF percentage output from these new and expanding facilities is not a given. But with governments the world-over agreeing at ICAO to a long-term aspirational goal (LTAG) of net zero by 2050, they now share accountability for aviation’s decarbonization. That means establishing a policy framework to ensure that aviation gets the needed share of renewable energy production in SAF,” said Walsh.

The case for diversification, within current sustainability criteria, is clear. At present, it is expected that 85% of future SAF volume over the next five years will be derived from just one of nine certified pathways, being Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA), which is dependent on limited availability of feedstock such as waste fat, oil and grease feedstocks (FOGs, recognized by industry as second-generation feedstock).

IATA identifies three main avenues to achieve SAF diversification:

1. Scale already certified SAF pathways, such as Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) & FischerTropsch (FT)

2. Accelerated R&D for SAF production pathways that are currently in development

3. Scale up of feedstock/feedstock conversion technology

Accelerating these avenues to commercialized levels will require policy leadership from governments. To start, there is an impending need for the harmonization of core SAF policies (pdf) as a means of reducing administrative, logistical and geographic barriers to entry for new market entrants, including producers, feedstock providers, and offtakers.

More fundamentally, the challenge is finding the capital needed to fund the development of new technology and production facilities. Governments must look at the broader sustainability picture with these investments. SAF can be produced from surplus forestry and agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, food waste and wet wastes (third generation feedstocks). Producing SAF from these can create long-term return on investment opportunities for

governments, with the potential of financing the clean-up of the environment, supporting developing economies and delivering a futureproofed intersection of energy transition and energy security.

A recent IATA survey revealed significant public support for SAF. Some 85% of travellers agreed that governments should provide incentives for airlines to use SAF.

“People have experienced governments’ role in the transition to green energy for electricity. They now expect it for SAF. The G7 leaders are among the latest to reiterate their understanding that SAF is critical for sustainable aviation. Now they must support their declarations with effective policies. To promote SAF production, there are many tried and tested tools including tax credits, grants, or even direct investments in emerging technologies and solutions. The market is there. Airlines want to purchase SAF. Anything to meaningfully incentivize SAF production will be a step forward,” added Walsh.

Vietnam Airlines to offer millions of summer seats to meet demand

Carrier has announced it will offer over 7.3 million seats for sale between June and August this year, rising to meet travel demand.

The airline group, which includes Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO), is reported to have increased its seat capacity in a move to meet increased travel demand through the summer season.

The increase in seats is across both International and Domestic routes and will cover the peak period between June and August 2023. The group is reportedly operating around 500 flights per day in the summer months, which equates to an increase of 30 per cent.

Flight increased focus on connections through the major Vietnamese hubs of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. With the popular destinations of Da Nang, Hue, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Da Lat and Phu Quoc

being the focus. The increases will also see re-establishing the links between Vietnam and its Asian neighbours.

This will primarily cover Japan, the Republic of Korea and Thailand.

With restrictions removed, the Group is reported to be seeing a large increase and steady demand in bookings during the peak travel season. This is consistent with global demand but also with other carriers in the region since the removal of restrictions to key nations, such as Vietnam, China, Japan and Korea in the latter half of 2022.

Strong Performance

Already this year, Vietnam Airlines has announced increases on some of its key routes. In April, it unveiled plans to increase its London Heathrow operations to daily, starting later in October.

It also announced the creation of new route between the Vietnamese city of Hanoi and Melbourne, Australia. The route is due to commence on June 15th on the airline’s Airbus A350 fleet with a twice weekly frequency.

The airline has also already entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with fellow East-Asian heavyweight carriers, Singapore Airlines, to strengthen their commercial collaboration, globally and in the region.

During the Lunar New Year period, the airline saw an outstanding result of carrying around 2.4 million passengers on 14,500 flights, exceeding pre-COVID levels. As the COVID restrictions in Asia start to become a memory, Vietnam Airlines Group is starting to show results in key areas and flexing its wings to further expand outwards. Eyes will be on the Group to see if the strong performance in the Lunar New Year period can be replicated in the key summer months.

IATA and UNEP sign MOU to reduce single-use plastics

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to address sustainability challenges in the aviation industry.

Reduction of problematic single use plastics products (SUPP) and improving the circularity in the use of plastics by the industry is the initial focus of the partnership as UNEP leads global efforts to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, by the end of 2024.

Making aircraft cabins more sustainable is a priority for airlines and their passengers. The complex and asymmetrical regulatory environment, however, often poses an obstacle by preventing circular economy best practices. In the absence of a global approach, differing regulations at both ends

of a journey severely limit the actions that airlines can take.

IATA advocates for a simplified and harmonized regulatory environment that would enable a reduction in plastic utilization and greater reuse, and recycling of cabin waste, including plastics, where they are needed. To this end, the partnership will step-up IATA’s engagement with UNEP to ensure that aviation’s unique challenges and opportunities are represented in the upcoming international legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution.

Already, IATA and UNEP are working on joint

guidance on Re-thinking Plastics in Aviation. This comprehensive resource will encompass an overview of regulations, guidance on SUPP replacement, and recommended best practices for both industry and regulators.

Formalizing IATA’s longstanding collaboration with UNEP will help airlines move even faster on improving the sustainability of the aircraft cabin. common circular economic solutions in all markets. For example, currently our hands are tied with outdated regulations focused on incineration rather than reuse and recycling. Modernizing that will be a big step forward for sustainability,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s SVP Sustainability and Chief Economist.

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, only nine percent is recycled, with the pollution it generates making it extremely urgent that global action is taken.

Under this partnership, IATA and UNEP also

plan to work together on knowledge sharing, guidance and networking in other key sustainability challenges including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), sustainable finance, climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation including preventing wildlife trafficking and sustainable tourism.

Japan Airlines partners with Wisk to explore eVTOL plans

The carrier announced a new collaboration with the California-based company to bring allelectric air taxi services to Japan.

Wisk Aero and Japan Airlines (JAL) have a plan to bring self-flying, allelectric air taxi services to Japan. With certain parts of Japan being dense urban environments with large amounts of road traffic, an air taxi service will be able to cater to those who need to get across town as quickly as possible.

“Wisk and Japan Airlines share a commitment to safe, accessible transportation and to ensuring that our services provide long-term benefit to the communities that we serve. The partnership will also include Japan Airlines’ engineering division, JAL Engineering (JALEC), who will play an integral part in the maintenance and operation of Wisk’s autonomous air taxis.

According to Wisk, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed to establish a framework for collaboration between the two companies. Together, Wisk and JAL will work alongside the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), and other relevant Japanese Government agencies to attain regulatory approval and ensure that all safety requirements are satisfied.

Logistics

JAL has unveiled plans to introduce three dedicated cargo aircraft, all of which are Boeing 767-300ER Freighters. The move will be the first time in 13 years that JAL will operate its own freighter, and operations will

begin sequentially from the end of fiscal year 2023.

JAL has been securing revenues reliably and efficiently in the air cargo business, where demand fluctuates widely, through flexible business operations by using cargo space on passenger flights and chartering other companies' freighters in response to demand. However, with plans for further growth in the cargo and mail business, the company decided to operate its own freighters.

With the introduction of the Freighter, a new business model will be established to ensure stable and growing demand.

To capture domestic and international e-commerce, parcel delivery, and other high growth cargo, JAL will build alliances with logistics partners and operate routes that ensure stable demand. In

addition, JAL will ensure that domestic air transportation plays a growing role in response and limit business risks caused by fluctuations in demand and market conditions.

From fiscal 2023, JAL will begin operating international flights mainly to East Asia, and in the future operate domestic flights to improve aircraft utilization while maximizing the cargo loading ratio. Furthermore, JAL will respond to customers’ needs by flexibly offering charter and non-scheduled flights.

Malaysia Aviation Group signs partnership agreement with Chooose

The partnership will see the development of a climate software solution to support Malaysia Airlines’ commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in line with the MAG Sustainability Blueprint.

Through this partnership, Malaysia Airlines’ individual and corporate customers can understand and address the emissions associated with their flights by supporting verified carbon offset projects directly when booking through the airline’s official website starting in June 2023. The climate projects selected by MAG, in collaboration with industry experts, are certified by internationally recognised carbon certification standards.

Group Chief Sustainability Officer of MAG, Philip See, said: “We recognise the importance of our role in creating a sustainable future for the aviation industry, and we are committed to not just reducing our carbon footprint but rally participation from our customers to be part of this significant journey, towards

achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

By embedding the Chooose-powered solution directly into the customer booking flow, MAG provides transparency around the carbon emissions of every journey and educates customers on their carbon impact with precise calculations according to latest industry standards.

Customers can then choose to address the carbon emissions of their flight and support high-quality carbon projects by purchasing verified carbon offsets in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Following the transaction, Chooose will provide a certificate confirming the customer's climate offset purchase. The partnership will expand to include the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Additionally, through the new programme, corporate customers will be provided with tools to automatically estimate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their company’s employee travel, to voluntarily offset these emissions, and to report on

their climate action along the way.

The trio ran a free workshop on mapping seagrass meadows using drone imagery in the Gulf of Mannar to bridge a knowledge gap in seagrass sustainability. The workshop was conducted by scientific expert Dr. Milica Stankovic from the Prince of Songkla University in Thailand and trained local scientists and professionals on using drones to map seagrass meadows.

Carriers announce plans to enter into a joint venture arrangement that would deepen cooperation.

Singapore Airlines to expand Garuda Indonesia partnership

Garuda Indonesia (GA) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) hope to increase passenger capacity between Singapore and Indonesia, and offer customers more travel options between the two countries.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the proposed joint venture will cover routes between Singapore and Denpasar, Jakarta, and Surabaya. This will expand on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that the two airlines signed in November 2021.

It would allow Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines to potentially coordinate schedules between Singapore and Indonesia, offering customers more seamless flight connectivity between the two countries and beyond.

The carriers will also explore the implementation of new initiatives, including joint fare products and an alignment of

corporate programmes to enhance the value proposition to customers.

Irfan Setiaputra, president and chief executive officer, Garuda Indonesia, explained: “With the existence of more than a decade of collaboration between these two national flag carriers, this joint venture agreement, as a further milestone of the partnership expansion initiative, will certainly strengthen the commitment between the two carriers simultaneously, delivering a seamless and valuable flying experience to both our customers across the globe.

All Nippon Airways

(ANA) and EL AL Israel Airlines (EL AL) have entered into a commercial agreement marking the beginning of a codeshare partnership to connect Japan and Israel. The partnership will start in spring 2024 with ANA placing its NH code on the EL AL operating flights on the Tel Aviv-Tokyo Narita route, which was inaugurated in March.

Subsequently, EL AL will place its LY code on select ANA routes, including domestic routes within Japan.

The airlines are also planning to sign a Frequent Flyer Program agreement, enhancing benefits for mileage members traveling between Japan and Israel. Members can expect premium customer services and reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and premium customer benefits as part of the agreement.

“ANA is excited to begin this partnership with EL AL, and we hope that it will provide safe and convenient travel with greater opportunities for both business and leisure passengers between Israel and Japan,” said Shinichi Inoue, chief executive, ANA. “This partnership will strengthen customer service and connections between our countries and further enhance the relationship that has been growing in all areas for over 70 years.”

Royal Brunei Airlines

Royal Brunei Airlines - honoured with the title of World’s Leading Cabin Crew at the World Travel Awards - has resumed its route between Dubai International Airport and London Heathrow after four years. The service flies direct three times per week. Flights will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with return flights starting from Dh2,225 ($605). The route, which ceased operation in 2018, typically offered more affordable travel than operators based in the UAE and the UK.

However, at the time of writing, current prices appear to be comparable with regional airlines, especially during the busy Christmas period. Flights will depart Dubai International Airport at 03:00, reaching London Heathrow at 07:20 local time.

For the return leg, flights depart London at 17:00 and arrive in Dubai at 04:15. The resumption of the route will come as good news for UAE residents wishing to travel to the UK this autumn.

AirAsia

At the same time, AirAsia has signed a cooperation framework agreement with the Fuzhou Municipal People's Government recently, aiming to jointly promote the highquality development of Fuzhou's Civil Aviation and turn Fuzhou Airport into a gateway hub for domestic transportation to Southeast Asia.

Lin Baojin, member of the CPC Standing Committee of CPC Fujian Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee, said: “In recent years, under the promotion of President Xi Jinping and President Joko Widodo, China

and Indonesia have established a comprehensive strategic partnership. Fujian Province attaches great importance to cooperation with Southeast Asia. Recently, the Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Zhou Zuyi led a delegation group to visit Indonesia to implement the consensus of the two countries, and promote cooperation in various fields at a higher level.

“As the capital of Fujian Province, Fuzhou conscientiously implements the deployment requirements made by the Central Party Committee, the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government. We are focusing on building a modern international city, accelerating the construction of the Two Countries, Two Parks between China and Southeast Asia under the Fuzhou Airport Phase II expansion projects.

Bamboo Airways

Finally, Bamboo Airways has actively worked with IATA on many aspects, aiming to enhance the digital transformation and customer experiences. Many impressive achievements have been recorded in the process. At the same time, IATA

plays a crucial role in bridging Bamboo Airways and aviation corporations in the region and worldwide.

On such basis, chief executive Nguyen Minh Hai expressed interest in leveraging the comprehensive collaboration with IATA to the upper level. Regarding personnel, Bamboo Airways expected to implement the IATA Professional Training for the airline’s middle management. This will foster Bamboo Airways’ operation and management capacity and fulfil expansion demands down the line.

Given the aviation personnel shortage in many regions, this global standard training is also significant for Bamboo Airways to support other airline partners in providing highly qualified personnel such as technicians, engineers, cabin crew and ground staff.

Regarding digital transformation, Bamboo Airways showed special interest in IATA’s promising initiatives, Modern Airline Retailing and ONE Record.

In particular, Modern Airline Retailing encompasses more modern industry approach including the NDC standard modernizing the digital communications between airlines, travel agents, third parties, IT service providers, to distribute airline content. This is among essential first steps for airlines to better engage with customers by creating offers and tailoring them to meet customer’s needs.

ONE Record is a data-sharing standard whose aim is to improve the efficiency, transparency and collaboration in the air cargo industry. It sets the foundation for the digitization of the air cargo industry. Cathay Community Flight takes off from Hong Kong

Cathay proudly continued longstanding commitment to supporting youth development.

The flight – the eighth to be operated by the airline since 2007 – saw about 170 students and mentors enjoy a 90-minute flight in the skies above Hong Kong onboard a state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.

The Cathay Community Flight 2023 marked the culmination of a series of initiatives organised by the airline in support of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government’s ‘Strive and Rise Programme,’ which pairs students with volunteer mentors to help them build up their self-confidence and guide them to develop their personal goals.

Cathay’s contribution to Strive and Rise aligns with its deep commitment to youth development which includes various programmes aimed at providing opportunities for young Hong Kong people to explore a career in aviation. These include I Can Fly, the Cadet Pilot Training Programme, the Cathay Hackathon,

collaboration with the Vocational Training Council and various summer internship and graduate trainee programmes.

Over the years, the airline has also organised a broad range of community initiatives to support local groups with special needs, including volunteer services to provide homework support and mentorship for children from underprivileged and ethnic minority backgrounds.

The Cathay Community Flight 2023 was hosted by Cathay chief executive officer, Ronald Lam, while the guest of honour was chief secretary for administration of the HKSAR government Chan Kwok-ki.

Chan said: “The government would like to sincerely thank Cathay for its staunch support of the Strive and Rise Programme that I am proud to lead. Over the past few months, Cathay has invited about 1,600 students and mentors from the programme to participate in a series of meticulously planned Aviation Exploration Days. Through a variety of experiential activities including today's Cathay Community Flight, students are able to broaden their horizons and gain a better understanding of the opportunities to

develop in the aviation industry, so that they could better plan their academic paths.

The latest Community Flight was supported by Cathay volunteers, from cockpit and cabin crew to ground staff from various departments, who helped to make it a special day

for all concerned. Some of the cockpit crew who volunteered were themselves graduates of youth aviation education programmes such as I Can Fly that have been organised by Cathay previously.

Air New Zealand scales a weighty issue

The carrier will be asking more than 10,000 customers travelling on its international network to take part in a passenger weight survey this month.

The survey is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft and is a Civil Aviation Authority requirement. Air New Zealand Load Control Improvement Specialist Alastair James explains that before each take-off the pilot needs to know the weight and balance of the loaded aircraft.

"We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold. For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey."

Customers on Air New Zealand's domestic network were weighed in 2021. Now that international travel is back up and running, it's time for international flyers to weigh in. For customers who are hesitant about jumping on those scales there is nothing to fear.

"We know stepping on the scales can be daunting. We want to reassure our customers there is no visible display anywhere. No one can see your weight –not even us! It's completely anonymous," said James. "It's simple, it's voluntary, and by weighing in, you'll be helping us to fly you safely and efficiently, every time."

The survey will take place at the entrance to the gate lounge of certain Air New Zealand flights departing from Auckland International Airport until July 2.

Investment

The carrier is also making a significant investment in its fleet, capacity and marketing to improve the flying experience for customers and support New Zealand's tourism industry. The airline announced that it will be flying 4.5 million seats on 39 international routes, between March and October this year, alongside significant investments in its international fleet.

Air New Zealand chief executive, Greg Foran, says these investments sends a clear message that the airline is committed to grow and support New Zealand tourism all year round.

"Our fleet investment, capacity update, and marketing spend represent a significant commitment to New Zealand's tourism industry. By investing in new and retrofitted aircraft, adding more seats to our international routes, and increasing our marketing presence in key markets, we're making it even easier for visitors to tick New Zealand off their bucket lists."

The investment includes $3.5 billion in the purchase of eight new 787-9 Dreamliners

and five Airbus A320neo aircraft to add more seats on the Tasman and Pacific Island services. This includes the interior refurbishment of its 14 Boeing 787 aircraft, including the airline's new Business Premier Luxe and refreshed cabins. Work is expected to start next year.

The airline is also in final negotiations to secure another Boeing 777-300ER, which could add 3,000 more seats per week to the airline's international network. This would bring the total 777-300 fleet to eight.

"Across our international network, capacity is back to about 91 per cent of pre-Covid and bookings are steady,” said Foran.

Air New Zealand's North America network is close to pre-Covid levels, with more seats from Houston, San Francisco and Vancouver.

“Our New York route is special, and a valuable and promising market for New Zealand. The route has demonstrated strong demand since its launch in September and presents untapped potential for us to attract high-value customers and showcase the best of what our country has to offer.”

Later this year, the airline's alliance partner, United Airlines, will launch new routes from San Francisco-Christchurch and Los Angeles-Auckland, further growing North America capacity.

Air New Zealand's capacity on its Asia network is at 117 percent of pre-Covid levels, with Singapore remaining a key hub, particularly for connecting to India and Europe. Demand out of China is slowly rebuilding, and the airline's alliance partner, Air China, has restarted its Beijing-Auckland route. Capacity on Air New Zealand's

Tasman and Pacific Island network is also nearing pre-Covid levels.

The airline's domestic network is back to pre-Covid levels. Air New Zealand has added 5,000 seats a week to Christchurch, connecting the Garden City more often to Hamilton, Napier, and Nelson, and added 6,000 seats on regional flights out of Auckland and to main centres.

To support its commitment to New Zealand tourism, Air New Zealand is investing $30 million in marketing campaigns this financial year in key markets to target highquality visitors. The airline is also continuing to rebuild its offshore Sales and Marketing teams and has been steadily elevating its brand in key offshore markets.

Virgin Atlantic enters South America by launching new daily service to São Paulo, also continues India expansion with new route to Bangalore. Premium sun offering bolstered by return of Manchester to Las Vegas and Heathrow to Dubai, in addition to new routes to the Maldives and Turks & Caicos.

Virgin Atlantic has announced the launch of new routes across three continents, with brand new aircraft. Network growth comes as the airline capitalises on sustained demand for international travel. Customers are set to benefit from more than 250,000 total additional seats across Virgin Atlantic’s network, compared to 2019.

The airline’s international route network will be boosted by its first move into South America, with a brand-new daily flight from London Heathrow to São Paulo, Brazil. One of the most populous cities in the world, São Paulo is home to multinational businesses, providing corporate customers and business travellers the opportunity to fly in Virgin Atlantic style.

São Paulo is a key hub in Brazil for Virgin Atlantic’s codeshare partner and South America’s largest airline, LATAM. The partnership provides customers with onward connections to 12 domestic airports

in Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Florianopolis as well as offering earn and redemption options for Flying Club members.

Signalling expansion in the country, Bengaluru (Bangalore) will become the airline’s third destination and fourth daily service to India. Since 2019, Virgin Atlantic has increased capacity to India by 250%, the airline’s largest area of growth outside the United States.

Launching in Summer 2024, the addition of this new route means the airline will offer 500,000 seats (total) each year between the UK and India, while its growing codeshare with IndiGo, India’s leading airline, flies to 34 destinations across the country. Air Seychelles has announced that it will add service from its home base of Mahe to Colombo, Sri Lanka, with twice weekly flights commencing this month.

The inaugural flight will depart Mahe on June 20th at 22:05 arriving into Colombo four hours later. The flights will be served by the airline’s Airbus A320 Neo aircraft in a 12

business class and 156 economy class configuration. Air Seychelles’ chief commercial officer, Charles Johnson explained: “We’re very excited about this opportunity to link Seychelles with Sri Lanka. A destination in its own right with excellent tourist, medical and trading opportunities which all Seychellois will benefit from. In addition, our upcoming partnership with Sri Lankan

Airlines will allow travellers to purchase a single ticket for travel beyond Colombo to other destinations in Asia. This service will drastically reduce current travel times and at prices much lower than currently seen in the market.”

Bahamasair

Elsewhere, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism Investments & Aviation (BMOTIA) officials were on hand to share in the milestone

moment of the launch of Bahamasair's inaugural nonstop flight from Raleigh, North Carolina, to Freeport, Grand Bahama. The new airlift is expected to boost visitor arrivals to the island.

Bahamasair's inaugural flight departed Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) at 15:30 and arrived in Freeport two hours later, at 17:30. The airline's year-round service will operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, on a 138-seat Boeing 737-700. Freeport is RDU's seventh international destination and Bahamasair its 14th airline partner.

Ginger Moxey, Minister for Grand Bahama, said Bahamasair's new flight marks another big moment for Grand Bahama, in addition to the recent return of American Airline's direct flight from Charlotte, North Carolina.

In Africa, Kenya Airways has become the first African airline to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) provided by Eni for a long-haul flight. The Boeing 787-800 (B787-8) Dreamliner, that took off from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Amsterdam Schiphol was powered by Eni Sustainable Mobility's sustainable aviation fuel.

For this flight, JetA1 fuel is mixed with Eni Biojet, produced in the Eni’s Livorno refinery by distilling the bio-components

produced from the Gela biorefinery.

“Working with Eni Sustainable Mobility to pilot the use of SAF puts us on the first pathway to testing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel within Africa. The data and insights generated from the pilot flight will be valuable to inform policy decisions, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices related to SAF.

“This will be a significant milestone for Kenya Airways and the broader African aviation industry,” said Allan

Eni Biojet contains 100 per cent biogenic feedstock and is suitable for use with up to 50% of JetA1 fuel. For this flight it was mixed with conventional jet fuel by Kenya Airways in Nairobi.

From 2025, all aircraft departing from European airports will be required to incorporate a proportion of SAF.

As a result, the airline is positioning itself to take advantage of sustainable aviation fuel momentum in accordance with the direction indicated by the European Union with the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation that sets the targets for mixing traditional fuels with increased amounts of more sustainable fuels.

Air Mauritius

Finally, passengers can now fly directly from Delhi to Mauritius, an island of serene white sandy beaches and tantalising turquoise blue ocean. To mark the resumption of direct flights from Delhi to Mauritius, Air Mauritius in association with the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority organised a Networking Gala Evening at Hotel Imperial, in Delhi.

Air Mauritius, the flagship carrier of Mauritius resumed services with biweekly flights using the Airbus A330 aircraft in a Business and Economy class configuration with a capacity of 254 seats. The duration of the flight is seven hours and 30 minutes. Air Mauritius currently operates six weekly direct flights to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.

Copa Airlines works to boost Panama as aviation hub

The carrier has unveiled plans for new planes, destinations and initiatives for the year ahead.

Copa Airlines, a member of the global Star Alliance airline network, has announced expansion plans for 2023. This year’s planned initiatives focus on strengthening the Hub of the Americas, it’s primary connection centre in the region, by increasing its network of destinations and flight frequencies, as well as growing and improving its fleet of aircraft.

“Copa Airlines has been investing in Panama for more than 75 years, which has helped us become the leading airline in the region, turning the Hub of the Americas into Latin America’s preferred connecting point by facilitating air connectivity and contributing in boosting the economic, social, and tourism sectors of both Panama and Latin America.

“To remain sustainable and thrive in the current complex and competitive environment, the airline seeks to boost its growth, generate jobs, and increase our direct contributions to the country’s economy and commercial exchange in the region,” said Pedro Heilbron, chief executive officer at Copa Airlines.

As part of their 2023 plans, Copa Airlines confirmed the recent addition of 15 new B737MAX aircraft, an investment of US$2.1 billion, to their latest order. These aircraft are additions to the existing 2015 order of which 64 aircraft remain to be delivered within the next five years. In 2023, the airline expects to receive six additional Boeing 737 MAX9, bringing its current fleet to a total of 99 aircrafts, comprising of 32 B737 MAX9, 58 B737 800NB, and 9 B-7377000NG.

Copa Airlines is also planning to refurbish the training fleet of the Latin American Aviation Academy (ALAS) by acquiring eight new Diamond DA40/42 airplanes. The aircraft will be equipped with cuttingedge technology, which will facilitate the learning process while adhering to the highest safety standards. In addition, these airplanes are eco-friendly, consuming up to 50 per cent less fuel than the ones being replaced, ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for the airline industry.

including Baltimore and Austin in the United States, and Manta in Ecuador, for a total of 80 destinations in 33 countries throughout the Americas. The airline’s international connectivity surpasses that of other hubs in the region, making it a competitive advantage for Panama. The Hub of the Americas plays a strategic role in the country’s economy, and its unique connectivity has attracted airlines from around the world to complement their flights to the Central American country.

By incorporating three new routes and increasing flight frequencies to a variety of destinations, Copa Airlines estimates an 11% growth in the number of passengers compared to 2022. At the end of 2023, it expects to transport 16.1 million passengers while operating 328 daily flights, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

Copa Airlines will continue to implement successful initiatives that promote tourism and economic growth in Panama, such as the “Panama Stopover” program, which encourages in-transit passengers to spend a few days in the country. Since 2019, the

program has attracted more than 260,000 visitors, and it is estimated that over 115,000 tourists will take advantage of the Panama Stopover in 2023.

In addition, Copa continues to market promotional fares to Panama through the “Irresistible Panama” initiative, which accomplished a visitor increase of 27 per cent on board the airline’s flights. It also contributed to the promotion and publicity of the country through its social media channels, copa.com, and other advertising spaces owned by the brand such as Panorama, Copa’s onboard magazine.

Elsewhere, Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports have finished the second-tolast major phase of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project, with Terminal 3 now offering another entry point via the west headhouse as well as a dedicated check-in area for its Delta One customers.

“We’re building on our position as LAX’s leading premium global carrier and achieving yet another infrastructure milestone ahead of schedule – enabling an ever-elevated travel journey for our Los Angeles customers,” said Scott Santoro, vice president of global sales. “Now that the summer travel season has officially kicked off, Delta couldn’t be more ready to get our customers where they want to go most.”

The west headhouse, which features selfservice kiosks to drop bags and/or print boarding passes, gives customers another entry point to easily check in and get to security. Later this summer, Delta expects to implement digital ID technology at bag drop and security checkpoints, allowing eligible customers to use their biometric data to more seamlessly move through the airport.

An exclusive Delta One check-in area, located on the lower arrivals level of Terminal 3, offers a private TSA screening lane and

direct access to the Delta Sky Club. Delta One customers will be greeted by a team of Elite Service agents dedicated to providing white-glove service, and the space will offer refreshing towels as well as light food and beverage offerings. The Delta One check-in area will also feature one-of-a-kind artwork from two local artists in partnership with ArtLifting, a social enterprise that champions artists impacted by disabilities and housing insecurity.

Additional latest terminal enhancements include the addition of 100 more seats to the Delta Sky Club, the re-opening of the original Terminal 3 passenger tunnel, complete with its signature 1960s tile mosaic and direct access to baggage claim, an enlarged T3 Help Centre, and a second connection point to LAX’s automated people mover system when it opens in mid-2024.

Terminal 3 made its debut last year, with a centralized check-in lobby, expanded security checkpoint and baggage claim area, and state-of-the-art Delta Sky Club. Delta was able to accelerate project timelines and will deliver the state-of-the-art, 1.2-millionsquare-foot, 27-gate complex 18 months earlier than originally planned. The final milestone of the Delta Sky Way at LAX project — the airside connector to the Tom Bradley International Terminal — is expected to be complete in August 2023 and will eliminate the need to bus between terminals.

LATAM recognised for sustainability programme in South America

LATAM Cargo has been recognised by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as winner of the Air Cargo Innovation Award.

The airline was honoured in the corporate category for its plastic reduction projects in its cargo operations in Chile and Brazil. These initiatives were designed by employees and are part of the commitment to become a zero-waste-tolandfill group by 2027.

The results of the fourth edition of the awards were presented during the closing of the IATA World Cargo Symposium. The awards sought to highlight new concepts and ideas that contribute to the digitisation, sustainability, safety and security of the air cargo logistics industry.

LATAM Cargo stood out from the other 25 competitors in the corporate category, presenting the progress made in sustainability with the implementation of three

circular economy innovative projects for its operational processes in the domestic and international markets of Chile and Brazil.

These initiatives are, in the case of Chile, the implementation of a recyclable 3M tape that replaces the plastic film used to consolidate dry cargo in the country's import hold, which will enable an 80 per cent substitution of plastic in this process, resulting in a reduction of 24 tons per year.

In addition, with this, LATAM becomes the first airline in the world to work with 3M, and to implement this innovative material for cargo operations.

The second project implemented in the country was in their domestic narrow body operation and aimed to replace the plastic film used

only to consolidate and transport cargo safely from the hold to the aircraft's feet, with a reusable blanket that has a useful life of nearly four years. This change will make it possible to reduce the use of this plastic by 100 per cent for this process, thus reducing the use of 45 tons of this material per year.

On the other hand, the last initiative exhibited is the one applied in Brazil, which following the objective of replacing plastic film, the cargo subsidiary resorted to the use of waterproof and reusable pallet covers for the storage of cargo in the Guarulhos warehouse, as well as for the ground transportation of cargo from one warehouse to another. With this, the company expects to reduce 13 tons of plastic per year.

It was the employees of the cargo subsidiary who researched and proposed these innovative solutions that were intended to reduce, eliminate or replace the use of plastics in the cargo operation, seeking new materials that were more sustainable and did not involve operational risks, both for the cargo and for the operators.

These results were possible thanks to the collaborative work with its suppliers, who supported this initiative to implement the due processes and thus achieve a replacement material that was reusable and complied with all the environmental and technical requirements necessary to achieve a circular economy.

It should be recalled that in May 2021, the LATAM Group launched its renewed sustainability strategy in which it established challenging goals: to achieve carbon neutrality

by 2050, eliminate single-use plastics throughout its operations by 2023, and become a zero waste to landfill group by 2027, with the aim of contributing to the protection of South American ecosystems for the next 30 years.

“This award is a very important recognition not only for the group, but especially for our employees who were behind these innovations. Two years ago, we made a commitment to migrate from a linear model to a circular one, where waste is a resource. Today these projects are a reflection of this commitment, and of the fact that great changes can come from the bottom up, without the need for major investment or technology. These advances are just the beginning. We will continue to work on more initiatives that allow us to contribute to the environment, and we hope that more industry players will join in, because we cannot

achieve change alone," commented Diego García, director of ground operations and handling at LATAM Cargo.

To date, the cargo airline group has researched and tested more than 18 initiatives focused on plastic reduction and substitution in its operations, of which 7 are being tested in some markets in the region. It is expected that in the future the company will continue to expand these projects to all applicable areas within its network.

The 2022-2023 school year marks the 25th anniversary of AAP! Since the awardwinning program first launched, Southwest Pilots have visited thousands of classrooms around the country, teaching an aviationthemed curriculum and impacting the lives of more half a million students.

Developed in 1997 in cooperation with the Smithsonian, Adopt-A-Pilot is a one-of-akind, award-winning mentorship program. The program is endorsed by former First Lady Laura Bush, General Collin Powell, and the US Chamber of Commerce for its contribution to America’s children.

New Flights

Southwest Airlines also recently announced more nonstop service to the US capital in an expansion of summer travel options for customers by bringing two additional nonstop routes to Reagan National Airport (DCA).

From July 11 through to September 4, Southwest will offer additional nonstop service between Memphis, with one-round trip per day, and Albany, also with one round-trip per day.

“The additional slots that became available for this upcoming summer will allow

Southwest to bring the benefits of competition, convenience, and our best-inclass service by linking more cities nonstop with Washington,” said Andrew Watterson, chief operating officer at Southwest Airlines.

“With our all-Boeing 737 fleet, Customers enjoy large-jet service on every flight, whether they're traveling from Washington to Albany and Memphis or throughout our expansive network of more than 120 destinations.”

The construction of Batumi Boulevard was started in 1881 by a Prussian gardener and landscape architect and later completed by a French architect. Saint Lucia to host World Travel Awards Caribbean & The Americas Gala Ceremony 2023

World Travel Awards has revealed that the paradise island of Saint Lucia will host its Caribbean & The Americas Gala Ceremony 2023. The leading travel industry figureheads from across the region will attend the red-carpet reception on 26 August 2023.

The VIP evening will take place at Sandals Grande St. Lucian and form the climax of World Travel Week 2023, a week-long celebration of the global travel and tourism sector, featuring a series of events to unite the industry’s thought-leaders and spark debate on key issues.
