@byroncollege facebook/byroncollege We would like to acknowledge the Arakwal People of the Bundjalung Nation who are the Traditional Custodians of this land which we live, work, and stand on. Arakwal People retain a strong connection to Country: actively caring for flora and fauna and land and waters. We ask that you respect and help look after Country and Culture. We also acknowledge and pay our respect to Elders both past and present, and the extended Aboriginal community.

Gre e ting s, As we embark on another exciting new term packed full of courses and learning opportunities, it’s been wonderful to see so many new and returning students on campus in the past 6 months. The desire to upskill, learn something new or simply just meet and connect with others is such an integral part of our community. Enjoy the new program and hopefully find something that ignites something new and exciting for you. See below for some highlights (and there have been many) from the term just been. We look forward to seeing you on campus soon! Regional Student Art Award As our community and the world at large continue to navigate our climate struggles and opportunities, it was very timely and an honour for Byron Community College Director Richard Vinycomb to present the prize for the regional 2020 Young Environmental Protectors (YEP) competition. YEP is a High School Art Competition open to Northern Rivers students, sponsored by local businesses including the College, presenting them with an opportunity to creatively express their concerns and hopes for the future of their environment. Their works were judged by a panel of judges including Byron College arts tutor Virginia Reid. Tayha Martin from Murwillumbah High School received a $1,000 prize for her beautiful mixed media piece, Biodiversity.

Tutor Awards In other award news it was very exciting to hear that two of our Permaculture tutors were recognised for their tireless work and commitment to permaculture at the recent Australian Permaculture Convergence (APC). Julianne Hartmann, one of our Certificate III in Permaculture tutors received an Elders Award – in recognition of her significant contribution to the permaculture community (at least 25 years of active permaculture involvement). Bunya Halasz, Permaculture Design Course tutor received a Community Service Award – in recognition of his significant contributions to the permaculture community in the last 10 years. Congratulations Jules & Bunya!

In shot left to right, Tayha Martin, Murwillumbah HS student, along with her art teacher, Bev Cooke, Tony Barry (competition organiser) and Byron Community College director Richard Vinycomb.

SOURDOUGH BUSINESS PATHWAYS

How A Business Question Was The Prompt For A Winning Carbon Neutral Enterprise Wendy Bithell undertook Sourdough’s Pre-Accelerator program with her second business idea. “I’ve run Vision Walks Eco-Tours for 13 years,” she says. “On applying for ecotourism certification, I was asked what my carbon footprint was and I had to admit I had no idea.” Unknown to her in that moment, this realisation was the prompt for her second business idea: Local Carbon Collective. With degrees in both environmental and computer science, Wendy is no stranger to mixing technology and real life. No guidance or tools were offered to help her answer the question about her carbon footprint, so she got to work on a spreadsheet. “I’m a bit of a nerd,” she says proudly. After concluding that Vision Walks was carbon-neutral (and, now she is planting more koala trees, carbon-negative), she realised the spreadsheet she’d created could be of use to others. “Not everyone is a nerd like me,” she says. “I realised I could help other businesses do what I’ve done.” Wendy put her own seed money into developing a prototype app. Then COVID hit and everything ground to a halt. Enrolling in the Pre-Accelerator program encouraged Wendy to continue to progress her idea. “Because I was so busy running tours, it was good to have the space for getting my head into this startup,” she says. “Having three hours a week dedicated in the classroom, plus homework, forced my mindset to focus. Otherwise it would have kept slipping down my list of things to do.”

“I’ve been operating as a sole trader but am now changing the structure to a company and setting up a not-for-profit arm,” she says. “I wouldn’t have done this without the program.” “The whole program gave me confidence that my idea is a good one,” she says. “Then, winning gave me confidence that it is possible to make it happen.” Wendy cannot speak highly enough of the mentors on the Pre-Accelerator program. “Ash is such an asset,” she says of Ashleigh Camm, Sourdough’s Expert in Residence. To anyone considering bringing their business idea to Sourdough’s Pre-Accelerator program, she says simply: “Do it! Jump in, take the leap. You can sit on a fence and ‘um and ah’ for ages. This program allows you to get off the fence and hit the ground to see if it’s a workable idea or change it to make it a workable idea. Get it out of your head and into the real world, or you’ll be 106 and still wondering.” Applications are now open for the next Pre-Accelerator intake in September via www.sbp.org.au/pre-accelerator

Wendy came into the program with a ‘Minimum Viable Product’ (MVP) – her prototype app, for which she’d already applied for a patent. “My actual idea didn’t overly change,” she says. “But others really u-turned their ideas based on mentoring and feedback.” The biggest learning Wendy took away from the program was about the structure of her business.

Individual Support

I worked in hospitality for 18 years, managing pubs and hotels. Working a 70 hour week was normal and I was over it. After moving from Toowoomba to the Byron Shire for love, I gave myself a year of unofficial long service leave. My plan was to relax in paradise. I did that for six months before my partner decided to do the Certificate III in Individual Support and suggested I do it too. Why not?! It was a massive career change, a whole 180˚. Starting the course felt daunting as I’d been out of study for so long; I left high school three weeks into Year 12. I expected it to be like school but it’s totally not like that. It’s so much more relaxed and easy going. I’m amazed at how seamless starting studying again turned out to be. Ninety percent of the class were there for a total career change, just like me. We formed an instant camaraderie and became like a big family. I’ve made some really good friends, which was a real bonus as I’d left my entire life, family and friends in Queensland. I wanted a challenge and something totally different. I got that. I was planning on focussing only on aged care but one of the tutors changed my mind and I am so pleased as I now work in disability care. I do direct work and office management for Caring Carers, a local organisation. I love it. I have clients in New Brighton and Ballina who I help with activities of daily living (ADLs) like shopping, cooking and doctor’s appointments, as well as helping them pursue their interests and exercise. To anyone considering a career change but are unsure where to start, I say come on in to the College. Have a chat and grab a brochure. Everyone is friendly and they’ll help you think things through. Some in the class had doubts that they were too old to make a career change but no-one thought that by the end. I now work 30 hours a week and don’t do any evening or night work. Do I wish I’d got out of hospitality sooner? Yes!
