Byron Region Community College acknowledges and recognises the Bundjalung Nation, the traditional custodians from where we are based. We pay our respects to all of our region’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and towards our shared future.

What on earth are we learning? In a time of pandemic: a time of uncertainty and stress; a time of waving through a screen at friends, family, loved ones, colleagues how much are we changing and adapting, and what is the new normal going to be? So much of our rich cultural, social and economic life has been restricted and challenged. We know mental health is now more significant than ever. But there are always cracks, as Leonard Cohen says, “where the light comes in”. In a world that we can still hope for - one of healing, passion, joy, expression and learning - we get a chance to see how we can recreate and refresh ourselves by looking, listening and responding to something new - sometimes something extraordinary. It could be a stimulating read, a wonderful piece of music or simply being out in the beauty of our natural world. Byron Community College is part of our community fabric. Our organisations have been deeply affected by the current pandemic – but also by the upsetting dysfunctional states of many of our ecosystems and our democracies. Yet many of us are determined to find new ways and things to learn that will nourish ourselves and further benefit an inclusive humanity and healthy planet.

After 23 years of overseeing thousands of special learning offerings, I am still inspired by what range of talented and experienced teachers we have. And how overwhelmingly positive the student experience of participating in these courses has been – yes, even changing lives and places forever! So, I invite you to just take a few moments of your life to browse through this. For instance, considering our safe spaces, check out building an earth oven, or learning lawn bowls from a champion. Or if learning from home is a cool way to go, do a well guided yoga program or lift your income by learning how to sell products online. Then there’s Sourdough Business Pathways, which could help you navigate through tricky times, or longer term, think of our great vocational courses in 2021. If you also want to keep in touch with what’s coming up or make suggestions, go to our website and subscribe to one of the best newsletters in the Shire. All the best with your new normal!

Tutor: Visual Arts

I am lucky to live a life immersed in art. After studying at the College of Fine Art in Sydney, I did postgraduate study in Canberra and completed a Masters of Art in Melbourne after returning from a two year scholarship in New York. Over the years I’ve balanced studio life with teaching and have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings working and exhibiting internationally and within Indigenous communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. In early 2020, I immersed myself in a three-week residency in far western NSW. Having taught at the College since 2011, I love the safe and welcoming environment and the diversity of students my courses attract. Some of my students are complete beginners, some are professional artists seeking to practice, and others are simply allowing themselves permission to be creative. There is always an interesting range of students and life situations presented including students with disabilities. People are very kind, supportive and get a lot of camaraderie from the group. Some go on to further study and others have made their life expressive in a new way. We use varied materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, print making, photography, assembling, dying, weaving and clay. In my classes, art does not have to be a certain way. My courses are exploratory, experiential and fun. To anyone considering an art course at the College do not be put off if you have little or no experience. I encourage you to try things you haven’t before and simply stay open to being curious.

Tutor: Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

I started working in the field of childcare when my youngest child headed off to school. After completing my own Certificate III, I worked while simultaneously studying for my Diploma. I now have fifteen years direct work experience in preschools and long day care centres, as well as over a decade of experience teaching at the College. Working with children under the age of five is so special. The relevance and importance of those years is not fully acknowledged. I love introducing students to the theory of developmental milestones as well as handson skills of interacting with children. My particular interests include nature-based play, sustainable play items and exploring through sensory experiences. I’m also passionate about cultural competence. I bring a strong sense of organisation to my teaching, which fits well with the fact that working in early childhood requires both spontaneity and structure. Some of my students, who range in age from school-leavers to mid-life, have their own children and others do not. I love visiting current students during their work placements and seeing past graduates working there. The College has made its mark on the early childhood field. My advice to anyone considering early childhood study is to understand that it is a big commitment but know that you will receive a lot of support. Completing any qualification is a big tick for yourself and the opportunities for employment are high, both locally and elsewhere in Australia. Having taught at the College since 2009, I believe that adult education broadens your view on life, opens you up to new friendships and is constructive to mental wellbeing.
