prepping for

back to school Things are different than in years past but you can still manage your schedule. by Arielle Meyr

HOUNDS AND HEARTH MAGAZINE

The carefree and whimsical days of summer mean breakfast at noon, ice cream for dinner, and few responsibilities outside of picking up the house, mowing the lawn, and hunting down the best place to cool off.

But now that you or your kids are headed back to school soon - even if that only means to the dining room table - it’s time to prepare for our new schedule.

PAGE 06

Here are just a few tips to help establish a back-to-school sleep schedule. Start now! Or 2-3 weeks before your new schedule kicks in. Set a bedtime alarm to remind you to be in bed at the correct time. Do yourself a favor and record you favorite late-night shows so they won’t tempt you to stay up.

The transition from summer whimsy to back-to-school rigidity can be daunting. Fortunately for us, there are a handful of simple ways to prepare for and make that transition a bit smoother for everyone in the family.

Close blinds and use low-watt,

Reprogramming our summer brains to wake up early and get to sleep at a decent hour takes time. In fact, it can take up to 2-3 weeks to reset your sleep cycle!

before bed that helps you let go

warm light in the evenings. Give yourself an hour of technology-free time before bed. Establish a routine in that hour of the day and calm your brain before turning in.

HOUNDS AND HEARTH MAGAZINE

Establish Individual Responsibilities With everyone now headed in separate directions throughout the day, it’s important to identify the daily tasks that need to get done and then delegate those tasks to different members of the household. For example, assigning the responsibility of feeding the cat or letting the dog out in the morning to one person will greatly decrease the chance of Simba going hungry or Fido having an accident on your favorite rug. If it doesn’t work to have such rigid assignments, utilize a daily checklist (perhaps a pad of paper or whiteboard one the fridge) or a chore rotation calendar.

PAGE 07

Arrange for Services Ensure that you give yourself plenty of time to arrange for child care, pet care, dog walkers, weekly house cleans, yard maintenance, etc. Remember, everyone heads back to school right about the same time, and these services will be fully booked before you know it. Get an early start so that you don’t miss out on your preferred companies, sitters, and service providers.

It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, so make time to simply enjoy the company and companionship of your family members (including the furry ones.)

Plan Family Time This is so important and applies to all members of the household. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, so easy in fact that you may not realize until Thanksgiving that you’ve hardly had a spare moment to simply enjoy the company and companionship of your family members (including the furry ones.) But there are a few things that can help squeeze a little bit of family time into every day.

01 02

Plan a meal a day, or maybe just a few meals a week, where everyone can sit down and eat together. Have family meetings.

03

Carpool. When time and schedules allow, carpool with your family to share a few extra minutes together.

04

Go on walks! Fido needs to get out every day so why not make it a family affair?

05

Say goodnight. That’s right, even if you head to separate bedrooms at different times, end your day by saying your goodnights.

HOUNDS AND HEARTH MAGAZINE

PAGE 09

Family Meetings You’ve set your daily schedule, delegated responsibilities, and managed to get your sleep back on track. However, work meetings, vet appointments, school conferences, birthday parties, and other unscheduled events are bound to pop up. Keep everyone on the same page and adjust schedules and responsibilities as needed with family meetings. Whether it’s a brief family meeting once a day before bed time or once a week before another Manic Monday, do what works for you and yours.

Through all the impending chaos of a new season and the changes it brings, take time to breathe, relax, and smile. Enjoy the little things in your life and the loved ones you’re surrounded by. Take it day by day and soon you’ll find the rigid back-to-school lifestyle just as enjoyable and fulfilling as those funfilled days of summer!

AUTUMN

There's nothing like a little home refresh to help you set goals and intentions for the upcoming season. Linens Launder your cool-weather drapes, blankets, and area rugs.

WHY COMPLETING THESE TASKS IS IMPORTANT TO ME:

Swap the lightweight quilt on your bed for a chunky down comforter in a deep, earthy color. Pack up your breezy sheer curtains and replace (or layer) them with heavier window treatments to keep chills at bay.

Decor No need to replace your decorative pillows just replace the cover. You can find great handmade covers on Etsy! Scatter some pumpkins on your tabletops and shelves. Add a couple of autumn scents with candles or oils: apples, leaves, fireside, cider...

Equinox Celebration The autumn equinox it the perfect time to take a moment to quiet and balance ourselves; to get in touch with our surroundings. Pair your mental change with the physical act of embracing the new. Breathe the new air as the scent of your surroundings change from a vibrant summer to a cool and mellow autumn. Breathe in the new you as you exchange your light summer clothing for the embrace of your favorite sweaters. Breathe in the quiet of the world as it lines itself with a blanket of tired leaves.

Sparkle

You probably tackled some of the heavy cleaning taks in the spring so it won’t be quite the monster it was six months ago, but a great deal of clutter, abandoned projects, and waylaid chores can accumulate in that time. Print out our checklist (page 11) and take a few hours, a day, or a weekend to wrap up loose ends and relieve your home from clutter. You’ll return your home to a more peaceful state and prepare it for the exciting equinox preparations to come.

Breathe

Can you say pumpkin spice? I’m quite taken with the scent because it brings a warm reminder of things to come. However, if you’re not a fan (whaaaat?) there are many other scents that may say that for you. Whether you enjoy a soft vanilla, warm maple, or the more adventurous (and daring if you’re watching your sweets!) scent of fresh baked goods throughout your home–there’s a scent for everyone. Make it warm. Make it serene. Make it say “autumn” for you.

Harvest

Floral arrangements can transform your home from day-to-day and season-to-season. Better yet is that floral arrangements can be interpreted in an incredible number of ways. Autumn is the perfect time to utilize pumpkins, gourds, leaves, branches, and twigs in addition to or instead of flowers. If you prefer that the scent of the real-deal won’t collide with the pumpkin spice candle burning on the mantle, consider utilizing the faux-flower section in your local craft store.

Color

When it’s time to decide on your table runners and floral arrangements, the palette of candy corn and pine cones may not match the permanent decorative fixtures of your home.

Make it Light – Utilize whites, beiges, creams, tans, and golds to bring the season into full swing. Add a touch of femininity with dusty pinks and saddle brown.

If you prefer more non-traditional Autumn flair, consider these equally festive autumn palette alternatives…

Make it Blue – Imagine staring up at the glowing leaves of a Maple through to that soft blue sky above, take a mental snapshot of the colors.

Make it Daring – Purple can provide a sense of daring confidence to your home, pair it with neutrals or a pop of orange and burnt umber. Make it Lively – Expand your oranges and yellows to include vibrant greens and happy reds: reminders of a season passed.

Soft blues capture an early, breezy autumn with a touch of the open air: a unique take on a tale as old as time.

leaves There’s a lawn full of crunchy, golden reasons as to why you should head out your front door for a leaf peeping excursion this year. Since there are too many to count (and nearly too many to rake up) let's reach into a brief how, when, where, and why of leaf peeping. By Arielle Meyr

HOUNDS AND HEARTH MAGAZINE

Why Whether you’ve set it as your lockscreen, shared it on social media, or gone all the way to have your perfect fall image printed and framed on your mantel, that moment captured is an excellent reason why.

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Take your camera. Take a few pictures. Besides the beautiful visual show, nature has an incredible effect on our mental health. You don’t have to dig far into the interweb to discover the plethora of studies done on nature and the human psyche. To sum up the extraordinary amount of information out there, being outside surrounded by nature can help ease the symptoms of anxiety and depression,

lower blood pressure, increase positive thoughts, and elevate your overall mood and general disposition. There’s something so serene and beautiful about seeing and feeling every moment of this season. I find that a bit of autumn leaf peeping brings a great peace to me, one that the other seasons can’t quite match.

"LEAF PEEPING BRINGS A GREAT PEACE, ONE THAT THE OTHER SEASONS CAN’T QUITE MATCH."

HOUNDS AND HEARTH MAGAZINE

When When is the perfect time for a bit of leaf peeping? Today, yesterday, and every day until the cold of winter has taken over completely. Every day of autumn holds a different, beautiful truth of nature. And every moment of the day will create a different story in the images captured in your camera as well as the experience you’ll capture with your mind. A foggy morning will show the solitude of each golden tree, bush, and traveller;

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are mere feet away from each other but Octobers.” separated by a quiet haze.

Gables Each tree’s individual shade of autumn reaching towards the other and running together as their fallen leaves share the same patch of ground. And the evening light, set directly behind the rich tones of crimson, auburn, and gold, will make them glow as fierce as a fire in its hearth.

Where We are surrounded by the autumn leaves every time we step outside. And let me assure you... It. Is. Wonderful. However, I do love to get in the car to discover and experience new places of beauty. Here are just a handful of places to take your leaf peeping adventures… Driving Tours: A simple drive through your neighborhood may result in excellent leaf peeping opportunities! Cemeteries: Quiet, peaceful, and immaculately tended grounds make for the perfect place to meander and think. Parks: Possibly the most abundant and easily accessed sites! City parks are perfect for an afternoon of leaf peeping and nature. Monuments, Historical Sites, and Museum Grounds: Your local and national treasures will look even more magnificant dressed in their Fall finery. Take to the Wild: Pack up your backpack and set up camp way off the beaten path.

How Now that you know the place, time, and certainly the why; the how of leaf peeping is really quite simple… Plot out a course and bring appropriate tools for navigating. When travelling alone, try to let someone else know where you’ll be in case of emergency. Especially for the hikers!

"I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.” Nathaniel Hawthorne

Bring provisions for yourself as well as your four-legged companions. Wear the appropriate attire for your outing; consider your feet, the weather, and the setting. Don’t forget rain jackets and booties for Fido on those wet days!

Do stop your vehicle before using a mobile device to navigate or take pictures. Stay on paths (when indicated to do so.) Do your best not to disturb nature or those around you. Leave no trace! Properly dispose of any trash or waste including any waste Fido may make. Do make sure to have fun! Don’t let poor weather, getting a bit lost, or forgetting the memory card for your camera stop you from enjoying this glorious season! Go the extra mile: Have a professional handle your photos – Autumn is the perfect time to snag a leaf-frolicking photo session for your dog!
