This issue of Perspectives not only speaks to the resilience of the past, it also reminds us of the wonderful opportunities ahead of us. To borrow the words of Bill Zimmern, our Board Chair for the 2022-23 school year, it is “an exciting new era.” I look forward to the further inspiration this year will bring!

I IT IS A UNIQUE experience to immerse oneself in the achievements and celebrations of Country Day with the perspective of a new Head of School. As you can imagine, it is a learning journey. Some have asked me if it is overwhelming to “drink from the fire hose” these early weeks. Unequivocally, my answer is no. It is inspiring! Each dialogue I have—with a member of the staff, a parent, or a student—deepens my admiration and my excitement. This issue of Perspectives is no exception. It speaks to the extraordinary achievements of our community and the commitment to come together and maximize opportunities as Covid restrictions finally eased.

FALL 2022 3

Message from the Head of School

I am also inspired by the strong sense of community that resonates throughout this issue. The extraordinary generosity and commitment of our parent community who made “Fall in for the Country Day Fund” and the “All School Celebration and Auction” resoundingly successful efforts; the dedication of our Board of Trustees who partnered with the school through unpredictable times and united with the community to create a faculty endowment in honor of David Mancos; the amazing work in so many capacities of our parent volunteers who kept the Country Day spirit vibrant in events such as “Big Saturday 2022,” and finally Country Day’s ongoing commitment to living as an authentic and inclusive community in the context of its Strategic Plan for DEIB. I would be remiss if I did not call attention to the inspiring words of our teachers in “Why I Teach.” What shines through is the deep attention to our students’ well-being, the passion for making learning relevant and dynamic, and the awareness of how important their mentoring can be in the lives of our students. I cannot wait to learn more about our great teachers in the months ahead!

First, I am inspired by the achievements of our students. There is the amazing resilience of our Class of 2022, who—despite the flux imposed by Covid—strove together and shined as scholars and community leaders. They merit our pride and our admiration as they move into the next stage of their education and life journey. There is also the success of our students in multiple arenas this past spring: in athletics, the arts, and academic competitions. What a joy to see their myriad achievements! These stand as reminders of how dedicated our students are at Country Day.

News & Notes Class of 2022:

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE a word to describe the Class of 2022, resilience comes to mind. Their Upper School experience was interrupted midway through their sophomore year because of the pandemic. That meant remote learning and hybrid schedules, altered athletics and arts participation, fewer opportunities for internships and community service, and less chance for social connection and school traditions. The pandemic also significantly affected their college admissions process and ability to explore campuses. Yet they persevered, exhibited flexibility, and made the very best of a situation that was out of their control. And, for this class, college outcomes are just as impressive as we’ve come to expect at Country Day. Over the next few pages, we share several specific stories of resilience, along with highlights for the Class of 2022.

133 SENIORS submitted 1,091 APPLICATIONS , averaging 8 applications per student. They were admitted to 157 different colleges and universities and will attend 68 different schools in 23 different states, Washington, DC, and Canada. 71% of the class will attend colleges and universities outside of North Carolina. 45% of the class will attend private universities; 55% will attend public institutions. The class received $8.6 MILLION in scholarship offers based on academic merit, athletic abilities, or special talents.

ootball is Reid Simmons’ passion. A talented wide receiver, Reid dedicated himself year-round to football—through summer camps, off-season trainings, running track to stay in shape; doing whatever it took to bring his best to the field in the fall. College recruiters showed interest in his junior year, and he began his senior season full of hope and prospects. Unfortunately, during the first game, Reid tore his ACL, a season-ending injury that also dashed his plans to play football in college. Despite the disappointment, Reid made the best of the situation by staying committed to his team. He stepped up as a leader to help younger players learn the plays and assist at practice. Reid remembers that at first he felt lost, unsure of what his role, if any, would be. A few days after Reid’s surgery, Coach Brad Touma saw Reid in the training room and gifted him with a Country Day sweatshirt to show his support. “I realized then that if my refused to abandon me, why would I abandon them and my teammates?” remembers Reid. “It was almost impossible not to get back on the field and help in any way I could.” Reid is attending the University of Tennessee and plans to explore his athletic options—from club sports to making it as a football team walk-on.

ili Smith joined Country Day in ninth grade and in her four years has made a big impact. In fact, at graduation, she won the Head of School’s Award for her outstanding contributions to all phases of school life. She is both personable and fun-loving—always with a big smile—while also being persuasive and persistent. From the start, Mili got involved at Country Day, both in pursuing her interest in science and in clubs that focused on student agency and advocacy. During her sophomore year, she attended the National Student Diversity Leadership Conference, where she deepened her understanding of intersectionality. Six months later, the murder of George Floyd galvanized many people and institutions, including Country Day, to do more to address racial injustices in America. In the two years since, Mili has turned pain and sadness into action. No student has had as much experience in doing the work of DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) as Mili has. As president of the Black Student Union and a member of the Diversity Awareness Forum Executive Committee, Mili offers an experienced and skillful student voice to both her peers and the administration. Outside of school, she is a co-founder of Wisteria Magazine, a publication specifically for and about BIPOC teens and their allies.

ost people in our community are aware of the reason that Lulu was forced to grow up very quickly and painfully shortly after completing her sophomore year. Her older sister, Sally ’17, died in a hiking accident in July 2020. How do you return to school with reminders of your sister everywhere on campus, while at the same time dealing with the hybrid learning and social distancing in place? “Looking back, I don’t know how I made it through,” says Lulu. “But I realize that I am so much stronger than I thought I was, and I can push through anything thrown at me.” Described by her advisor as brilliant, insightful, hardworking, and resilient, Lulu is a top scholar, a varsity basketball player, an adventurer (she attended the Alzar School for a semester), an artist (she attended Governor’s School for art), a leader (as vice president of her class, she organized minigame tournaments to keep her classmates engaged during COVID lockdown), and empathetic (she speaks up for those whose voices may not be heard and gives origami cranes to people who have made a difference in her life). After taking a gap year to backpack through the Himalayas and Chile, Lulu will attend UNC-Chapel Hill as a recipient of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. She hopes to study psychology, chemistry, and Spanish.

T he College Counseling office often talks about finding the “right fit” school; in the case of Emmanuel Omari (or Omari in his Ghanian culture), Country Day found the right fit student. Omari, a recipient of the prestigious and highly selective Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program Scholarship sponsored by the U.S. State Department, was supposed to study in the U.S. his junior year, but the pandemic stalled those plans until August 2021. Omari made a powerful impression within his first few days on the Country Day campus. Intelligent, friendly, engaging, and energetic, he was soon moved into the senior class and on a path to receive a Country Day diploma. Despite adjusting to an unfamiliar lifestyle and school environment, incredibly far from home, while speaking his second language, Omari has persevered with gusto. Outside of class, he has taken advantage of every opportunity available to him, often trying something new. He was the team manager for the varsity football team, joined track and field, twice earned Best Delegate at Model UN com petitions, performed in the school musical Anastasia, regu larly leant his voice as a Diversity Awareness Forum panelist, served as a Big Brother mentor, and helped develop curriculum through the Charlotte Sister Cities Youth Leadership Committee.

Lulu Sasz

“Country Day has taught me a lot about myself, and shown me the endless opportunities to grow personally,” says Omari. “Most of all, I value the relationships I have built, not only with my classmates but with my teachers and Country Day families.”

A AS SENIOR WILLIAM GRASTY stood on 18, squared up to take his final putt of the 2022 NCISAA 4A Golf Tournament, his teammates wondered if this shot would be the “one.” Scores throughout the match are kept private among coaches and other groups, a common etiquette. So, squaring up on the last hole, he wasn’t quite sure where this final putt would place them. Max Jacobson, Charlie O’Shea, Landon Hawley, Hudson Schulze, and Camden Downey watched on, discussing the round, the potential other scores, and cheered as William stepped off the green.

Country Day came in first in the NCISAA qualifier days earlier, giving a promising indication of where they might place at the tournament’s end. That Monday would turn out to be one of the biggest days for our boys’ golf program in 19 years. The Bucs knew the match would be close, but Coach Bob Plyler knew the depth of his team and that depth just so happened to be two strokes under Charlotte Latin to bring the NCISAA trophy back home.

Charlotte Country Day School: 302 Charlotte Latin: 304

Bucs Swing into a Successful Spring Season

In truth, William missed his par putt on 18. The ball skidded around the hole, defied the laws of gravity, and just hung on the ledge along with everyone’s breath. The entire team went still, hoping that wasn’t the de ciding stroke. That is the thing about golf, though. You hope all those birdies and pars hold up against that final stroke, an unbelievable bogey, those duffs, and drops. And they did. “The best piece of advice Coach Plyler has ever given me is to take every shot one at a time,” says William. “This is most applicable on the golf course, but I have learned how to apply it to my life off the golf course as well…it has taught me how to live in the moment and not get down on myself when something goes wrong.” The best piece of advice Coach Plyler has ever given me is to take every shot one at a time.” — William Grasty ’22

On April 1, 2022, the Coach Calvin Davis Jr. tennis scoreboard was dedicated, thanks to the vision of alumni Walt Kennedy ’91 and Justin Starnes ’93. The former teammates rallied together 26 former players and current families to make the scoreboard a reality. Their contributions make Country Day the first independent school in North Carolina to boast such a useful piece of equipment.

“This new scoreboard is going to let the students, the families, the parents, the friends, and the players know what the score is in the match…from a team perspective and from an individual court perspective,” said Walt at the dedication ceremony.

“This incredible scoreboard bearing your name is a fitting tribute to you, Calvin, your legacy, and the 31 years that you have devoted to our school, Country Day tennis, and most importantly, all the students you’ve inspired,” saidTheJustin.2022 Boys’ Tennis team was the first to benefit from the scoreboard. This incredible scoreboard bearing your name is a fitting tribute to you, Calvin, your legacy, and the 31 years that you have devoted to our school, Country Day tennis, and most importantly, all the students you’ve inspired.

Walt and Justin played for Coach Davis his first season at Country Day, during which the team took home his first state championship. He has since earned 34 more, sent more than 100 students to play college tennis, and accumulated over 1,000 victories.

The strong spring finishes helped to contribute to Country Day winning the Wells Fargo Cup for the 2021–22 season. The Wells Fargo Cup, presented and sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, recognizes overall excellence in high school athletics among North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association member institutions. Points are awarded to schools based on each sport’s placing at the state level.

What is Odyssey of the Mind and Why Is It Important?

Q: What makes a successful Odyssey of the Mind team?

My advice for students who want to do it in the future is to just have fun. Yes, OM is a global competition, but it’s meant to bring you joy, fun, and good memories. Cherish your time in OM. I know this has been the highlight of my year. ~Emily Grace Always consider everyone’s opinions and ideas, and never give up. ~Claire Don’t give up when times are tough; keep going. Just because your friends aren’t on your team, get through it, and eventually, you ’ll become friends with them. Think outside the box, even when there is no box. ~Ellie My advice is to always look outside of the box. ~Eloise I think you should do it with your friends, be competitive, and don’t choose the Balsa Wood problem! ~Julie

What makes a successful Odyssey of the Mind team is people willing to step down and listen to others’ ideas. ~Molly

Q: Do you have any advice for students who are thinking about joining?

It has made me more competitive, and I think outside the box. I think that OM is coming together and thinking creatively outside your day-to-day lives. ~Ellie OM is an outlet for creativity, but it has academic benefits as well. In science class, we learned about magnets and repulsion, and now we use that in our skit. ~Julie Barton

The purpose of OM is to be creative and work together. You get so close with your teammates sometimes you finish each other’s sentences. ~Emily Q: What has been the most challenging aspect?

The most challenging aspect of OM is the planning stage. You just start from nothing and make a story. It must be under standable and fit the rubric. The most rewarding aspect is never giving up. I also made six friends on the team. ~Claire

My advice for kids wanting to join OM is to have fun and be creative! Think outside the box! ~Molly

Q: Explain in your own words what the purpose of Odyssey of the Mind is and how you think it will impact you in school and life?

I IN MAY, OUR FIFTH GRADE Odyssey of the Mind (OM) team finished in the top 10 at the World Competition. Congratulations to Molly Andresen, Julie Barton, Emily Grace Cassano, Eloise Givens, Hayley Haden, Claire Henderson, Ellie Watson, and parent coaches Elizabeth Cassano and Jenni Henderson. Before they headed off to compete, we asked team members a few questions to get to know them, the competition, and its impact a little better. Themes of friendship, perseverance, acceptance, humility, and teamwork rang through all the answers. And, of course, duct tape, magnets, and hot glue! Here are a few of their answers.

One thing that makes a good OM team is when everyone works together and is a team. ~Eloise

REPORTIMPACT

s my term as Chair of the Board of Trustees begins, I feel uniquely fortunate to be following a long line of phenomenal leaders whose strategic vision over the years has put Charlotte Country Day School in a position of tremendous strength. In particular, I would like to personally thank Scott Stevens, my predecessor as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Scott’s consistent and thoughtful guidance through the past three (two is customary) years was instrumental in navigating the school through COVID-related adjustments and a change in school leadership. I am humbled to follow in his and others’ footsteps and honored to help build upon that foundation as we head into an exciting next era in our school’s long history.

Lastly, please join me in thanking two trustees rolling off the Board of Trustees this year: MC Belk Pilon ’92 and Alex Funderburg. Their thoughtful advocacy, commitment, and leadership have served the school well and been valuable to the Board for years. I would also like to welcome three new trustees to the Board this year: Sam Bowles ’93, Mike Maguire, and Ann Willey. As an alum, a parent, and now your Board Chair, I am both inspired by the ways in which our school continues to grow and evolve, as well as excited for new opportunities ahead.

From the All-School Celebration and Auction to Big Saturday to Moving Up and Commencement Exercises, the Dowd Student Center, the John and Claudia Belk Upper School Learning Center, the Klein Aquatic Center, and the Harris Performance Gym took center stage. These tremendous venues are already enhancing the ability of the school’s dedicated teachers to fulfill the school’s mission of developing the potential of each student. You can’t help but feel an immense sense of pride as you walk through campus these days. We also enter a new era of school leadership. Marcel Gauthier hit the ground running in July as a dynamic, seasoned leader who is well-prepared for the role. I look forward to working with Marcel to continue building upon our school’s forward-thinking legacy and commitment to providing the very best opportunities for students.

A very successful capital campaign has transformed Cannon Campus. This past spring, we witnessed how our new facilities are being used in ways that further build community and enrich the vibrancy and variety of life on campus.

Financial stability allows us to continue to innovate and further improve the student experience. That promise begins with enrollment and the trust parents place in our teachers and our programming with their tuition dollars. Once again, we saw record admissions inquiries, enrollment, and reenrollment (a remarkable 97%) for the 2022–23 school year. The Country Day experience is further augmented by the generous spirit of giving from our community. The Country Day Fund, our school’s top giving priority, generated a recordbreaking $2.487 million in gifts for the 2021–22 school year, as well as nearly 75% parent Exemplifyingparticipation.thisgenerous spirit, Smoky and Margaret Bissell donated approximately 330 acres of valuable property south of Weddington on Providence Road to the school. Message from the Board of Trustees Chair, Bill Zimmern ’95

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank everyone who has made Country Day a philanthropic priority. Together, we are making an impact on the lives of our students. he collective effort of our parent support groups helps strengthen student programs, build community, and raise supplemental funds. Resilience, creativity, and flexibility resounded as volunteers pivoted their traditional programming to reach these goals during a pandemic. While much was learned and some changes adopted—like hosting meetings virtually or in small groups like the City Tour for new families—the energy was palpable during on-campus events this spring. The spirit of community for which Country Day is known came roaring back. Among many examples, Big Saturday 2022 truly exemplified the collaborative work of our parent support groups and led to the largest Big Saturday in our history!

In their efforts to foster an atmosphere that creates school spirit and a sense of community while supporting the athletics department, the Boosters Club fueled the energy in the student sections this year.

aking real and personal connections with families about their children, their family, and our school is what the admissions team aspires to do each admissions cycle. This past year, our office got creative and improvised to keep those connections alive. From Zoom calls to coffee trucks welcoming families for outdoor events, to outdoor drop-offs, and more, we made it work. The silver lining came in how our parent volunteers supported our office in ways we never anticipated, sharing their time and talents beyond expectations. Our team was tireless in their efforts to make every family feel important. Another silver lining was the access we provided for families, who could attend events from the comfort of their home, their office, or even their car—which happened quite often! We’ve learned so much in the past several years that may be continued into future years’ admissions process.

In an effort to promote an even more diverse community, HoopTee Charities, the Dee-Lite Foundation, and Country Day joined together to award four academic scholarships for the 2022–23 school year to four qualifying students from underrepresented backgrounds. The scholarships will cover all costs associated with four years of an Upper School educational experience, including tuition, books, extracurricular fees, and more. A shared commitment to children and education brought these three organizations together to find a way to make an impact through educa tional opportunities. “Our hope is that this opportunity will catapult four well-deserving young people into a bright future,” said Fred Whitfield, president and vice chairman of Hornets Entertainment.

Trustees Come Together to Create the Kyong and David Mancos Professional Development Endowed Fund

To honor his decades of dedicated service to Country Day, several former and current Trustees came together last spring to create the Kyong and David Mancos Professional Development Endowed Fund. It seems only fitting that this fund supports our faculty and staff as David has always been a champion of all Country Day employees.

“David has always been such the loyal soldier, ‘just show me the hill, sir,’”

The funds from this endowment will directly benefit growth and learning opportunities for our employees, which will, in turn, directly benefit our student body. Carl and Watts agree that they would “happily go into any foxhole with Mancos—our lives are better because of our friendship with David.” And our school is too!

For 24 years, he has led Country Day as the chief financial officer, managing an operating budget of $50 million, a team of 110 employees, and an endowment of more than $60 million. Under his responsibility are the Business Office and Human Resources, Information Technology, Plant Operations, Security, Transportation, the Campus Store, and FoodTheseService.facts alone are impressive, but what sets David apart is his genuine love of Country Day; and his care and concern for our entire faculty, staff, and students. This past school year, David ably and soundly served our school as Interim Head of School, in addition to maintaining his CFO duties.

This fund was established in 2022 to honor David’s longstanding service to Charlotte Country Day School. The fund supports professional development and growth opportunities for our talented faculty and staff. At the end of fiscal year 2021–22, Country Day had 75 restricted and unrestricted endowment and scholarship funds valued at $66 million.

When Willie Hobson reached out about creating an endowed scholarship fund at Country Day, it was no surprise he wanted to create it in someone else’s honor. Through a combined gift of current endowment dollars and a future planned gift, Willie established The Hobson-Mills Band Scholarship in honor of Stacey Mills and her incredible service to our Middle School band program.

Growing up, I never felt like I had a good teacher. What I mean by that is I always tried to be the best student for my teachers, but often didn’t feel my teachers wanted to take me under their wing, so to speak. When I taught in grad school, I decided I had to be the teacher I would want for myself. I can remember that moment when I noticed that students really were captivated by some of the things I was doing or saying, and I’ve been teaching ever since. I also think there is an assumption that school comes easy and that learning comes easy. So, it’s important for teachers to show students how they think and what they do to be a life long learner. When a teacher models for students how to take good notes or write a well-constructed argument, the student will rise to the challenge. One-on-one personal relationships are also so important. Knowing my students helps me be a better teacher, and they, in turn, are better students.

For example, when I teach world history, I use present day, digital maps even when we are learning about ancient history or events from hundreds of years ago. When my students learn about these past events on current maps, they start to realize that the world is not just these containers of countries. They begin to understand that history is really these ideas and influenc es that cross beyond borders. That helps my students to stop thinking in terms of countries, but rather to focus on historical experiences and movements. It’s a great day teaching when a student smiles and realizes that they had the capability of grasping a concept that is very difficult.

After college, I had the opportunity to teach English in Japan, and it was a life-changing experience for me. The classroom just felt like a natural place for me to be. It also took me back to my elementary and middle school years. I want to be the kind of teacher who supports all her students in their learning.

Why do you like teaching middle school age students?

NevertheSameDayTwice WHY I Teach

One of the things I learned early on in my teaching career is you can have an amazing curriculum but if the students don’t form a connection with you, they are not going to be invested in the learning process. The students don’t have to be your best friend, but they must know you care about them and that you’re passionate about what you’re teaching. If you can accomplish those two goals, they will work to their greatest potential.

What attracted you to Country Day?

Why did you become a teacher?

Bina Neumann Sixth-grade Language Arts/Social Studies

What really spoke to me about Country Day is our commitment to inclusiveness and diversity. I believe Country Day strives to be a truly inclusive environment. We want our students to feel a sense of belonging. Also, the collaboration that goes on between teachers is something I’ve never experienced to this degree at any other school. Everyone is invested in not only creating lessons that will be impactful but also in each other’s success. The resources that go into equipping teachers with the tools they need to be the best teachers they can be is incredible. I have benefited greatly from the Country Day Fund. I have taken part in professional development opportunities that have helped me develop and nurture skills—just like we try to do for the students, and that has made me a better teacher.

Middle schoolers are truly curious—they want to learn everything, and they want to question things. I love their passion. I also love that they are funny and that they are willing to laugh at themselves. We’ve created a culture at the Middle School that mistakes are part of the learning process, and it is what makes us better human beings. I love teaching because I never know what the day will bring. I teach two sections of language arts and social studies back-to-back, and what I might get from the students in one section could be very different from the students in the other section. Although the curriculum is the same, the students never are. They bring their own personalities and uniqueness, so it never feels like the same year twice.

Teachers at Country Day truly know their students. When a parent entrusts their child to us, they are essentially sending a piece of their heart to school each day. Country Day parents can feel confident that we love their children as our own. I spend so much time with my students that by the end of the year I do know them as well as I know my own two children. I’m invested in the well-being of my students, and I enjoy partnering with their parents. The relationships Country Day teachers build with families extends well beyond the one year a child is in our class. Country Day students are receiving an excellent education and an incredible support system. That is something you don’t find everywhere.

I am thrilled! This opportunity allows me to further develop my craft and dive deeper into subjects like history and writing. I have taught in several grade levels during my time at Country Day, and what I’ve found is no matter the age of the students (or the content!), the key ingredient is the connection you make with them. My Lower School students are amazing—they have wonderful stories to share, keep me laughing, and bring so much joy to the classroom. When I think about transitioning to fifth grade, I am excited to advise and teach students during such a pivotal developmental timeframe. They are managing insecurities and friendship dynamics, discovering their passions, and juggling more responsibilities. Fifth graders are not only learning how to build good study habits and the ins and outs of an essay structure, but they are also discovering who they want to be and what lights them up. It is an honor to walk alongside students during such an impressionable time in their schooling.

WHY I Teach

How do you feel about moving over to Middle School?

Why did you become a teacher?

I really loved learning and thrived in a school setting growing up, so teaching and helping others develop a love of learning seemed like a natural choice. For me, it is not about acquiring knowledge, but more about enjoying the learning process. As a teacher, I want to create an environment that fosters enthusiasm and perseverance. I want my students to have fun in the classroom and make positive connections to their peers and the curriculum. If students love coming to school, and I can get their buy-in at a young age, then I feel I have set them up with a solid foundation for the rest of their educational careers and beyond. It is also incredibly rewarding to be part of a student’s journey—to see their growth, to be a constant source of support for them, and to watch their confidence soar when they realize they can overcome challenges. I love watching students realize their potential and uniqueness. It’s the reason why I teach.

Why did you become a teacher?

Over the course of my high school career, the teachers who had the most impact on me were the ones that had a true passion and love for the subjects they taught. As I was making the decision to become a teacher, I knew I had this intense passion and love for biology and genetics, and I wanted to share that with young people. Now that I’ve been doing this for two years, I have found that what really drives me is not only sharing my passion but interacting with my students. I come back here every single day because of the interactions I get to have with my students in the classroom, the fact that I get to know them inside and out of the classroom, and the fact that I’m surrounded by amazing colleagues who support me and let me learn from them and their expertise.

What do you like about teaching freshmen? They are just plain fun. They have great questions, awesome insights, and they’re willing to engage with their teachers. I try to find a connection with each one of my students and figure out what interests them. Is it the football team you root for on the weekend? Is it the horseback riding you do outside of school? Whatever it may be, I know that making these connections with my students will make them more comfortable in the classroom. I am incredibly lucky to be able to teach at Country Day because I get to come to work excited about what I’m about to do. I look forward to seeing my students in the classroom, and I look forward to hearing about how their afternoons, evenings, and weekends went. I genuinely look forward to coming to work every single day.

WHY I Teach

Mentorship during this formative high school time is important to us as a community at Country Day and to me personally. I primarily teach freshmen, so I have the opportunity to not only teach my students biology but also help them cultivate skills that will position them for success later as they move through high school and college. Skills like time management, healthy study habits, and healthy reading comprehension habits are almost more important to me to impart to my students as we move through the actual science content. That said, seeing a student have an “aha moment” in class is probably one of the most rewarding things a teacher can experience. Witnessing them make a connection across the curriculum and put the pieces together is truly one of the best experiences.

Also, having a separate campus gives Middle School students an opportu nity to stretch their wings and see who they are. It gives them a chance to just be Middle School kids. I always refer to them as puppies with big feet because they don’t necessarily have control of their bodies and what they say or what they mean at the moment. I think being away from the Upper and Lower School students allows them to figure out who they are on this beautiful, tucked-away campus.

Teaching has given me an opportunity to make a connection with something I hold very dear to my heart. I started acting when I was a kid—about third grade—and I pursued it pretty much my entire life. When I decided I wanted to have a family and keep theater in my life, teaching was one of the greatest ways I could stay with it. So, I got my certificate and here I am. I’ve been teaching drama and directing productions for 11 years and it’s been quite the ride.

Watching past students continue to find success in the Upper School and beyond fills me with so much pride. It’s awesome to be a part of these kids’ growth in the Middle School and then to watch them light up the stage in Gorelick Family Theater or at the Blumey Awards. Seeing the progression of these students—seeing where they’ve gone and knowing where they’ve come from—makes me feel like we’re doing a good job.” Factor"WhatIf"

Why did you become a teacher?

WHY I Teach

I love Country Day for its “What if?” factor. I love that I can have an idea and I can go to my department head and say, “I’d like to take this field trip or incorporate this curriculum in my classroom,” and the answer is always “let’s explore that.” For instance, a colleague and I were just spitballing across the lunch table one day the idea of taking a theater trip to New York for sixth and seventh graders, and that eventually led to an actual experience for our students. It’s not just administrators. I can go to the orchestra teacher and say, “Hey, I want to do live music in a play next year,” or I can go to an art teacher and say, “Let’s use our students to create some marketing materials for the play or musical.” It’s never a “no.” That’s the norm in terms of the support system from the teachers, and administrators, and students, and even the parents; everyone just bands together to help.

I am dyslexic, so school wasn’t super easy for me. I went to Durham Academy, which is very much like Country Day, and had amazing teachers who looked out for me and helped me along the way. I don’t think I would have had that if I had gone somewhere else. When I moved to Charlotte, I wanted to find a private school and be that kind of teacher for other children. Growing up, I also knew that I didn’t want to work a corporate job where I sat at a desk all day; teaching is the opposite of that. I never know what I’m going to get when I walk in the door. The children are so excited to come to school, so it’s hard not to catch that contagiousness and just be as excited as they are to come in every day. I love seeing their little faces and knowing that when I show up to teach, I really am making a difference in the world.

WHY I Teach

Why did you become a teacher?

Annie Giarla-Carr

One of the amazing things about Country Day is all the professional development that we get to do and the support we get from Lower School administration to put what we learn about enhancing our teaching techniques into practice. This past year the kindergarten team went to an Institute for Multisensory Education training to learn more about the Orton-Gillingham approach. We all went in December and started using what we learned in the classroom in January. We’ve never had such good reading and writing scores, so we all are very excited about this approach to teaching reading.

Honestly, all of it. The kids are hilarious and fun, and they are just learning so much about themselves and other people. They are engaged and happy. For instance, we’re teaching them how to read and write for the first time, so the moment in January when we send books home stands out for me. They take their books home to share them with their parents, then come back the next day so proud that they could actually read the books. I love to see those “aha moments”, and there are so many for kids this age.

REPORTGIVING 38 PERSPECTIVES

On the following pages, we thank the 1,946 community members who supported our school during the 2021-22 fiscal year through the Country Day Fund. The Country Day Fund is the school’s number-one fundraising priority each year because it provides critical, unrestricted support to our operating budget, and we are so grateful for the impact your gifts have on our students and teachers. Our inaugural year of Fall in for the Country Day Fund was met with positive feedback from members across the community who appreciated the focus on inclusivity, community-wide participation, and fun! The generous philanthropic support of our community was felt as our students and teachers were joyfully back together fully in person this year. Thank you for your meaningful partnership and participation in the Country Day Fund! We are truly grateful!

50 PERSPECTIVES

Dear Fellow Alumni, Stories engage, teach, motivate, and they connect people and their communities near and far. A story invites someone to share an experience, a feeling, or history that has influenced their life. This is the Power of Story.

Charlotte Country Day School is home to nearly 5,300 alumni across the globe. No matter how far life has moved our alumni away from Carmel Road, the stories are a powerful representation of the impact this world-class institution has had on so many, including myself. Since 1990, Country Day has been my home. For 32 years, I have been fortunate enough to see this campus thrive, transform, and evolve to provide more opportunities and resources for students, faculty, and staff. It feels like just yesterday I was running around the old Harris Gym looking for 50 cents under the bleachers to buy a soda after school. Now, the state-of-the-art Hance Fine Arts Building sits in its place with the newly constructed Harris Performance Gym just beside it. These buildings are just two of the many new campus features that continue to keep Country Day at the forefront of education.

No matter the space—a classroom, the dining hall, theater, gym, or library—what means the most to me are the people. The stories that live in the buildings, old and new, revolve around what Country Day cares about the most, and that is the community that shares it together each day. My mission as the Director of Alumni Relations is to listen, engage, celebrate, and value the PEOPLE who have made this community so special for decades. Our alumni network is strong, and I am extremely honored to represent every one of you. I look forward to uniting the stories of the past with the stories of the present, ultimately connecting our alumni to each other and to our current campus of students and faculty.

Go

I invite all alumni to share their stories and to engage in the current life of the school in whatever capacity fits you. Even the smallest detail assists us in recognizing or simply caring for each alumni. Our proud alumni base will grow each spring, and how powerful it is to be able to share those stories now and in the future. Come connect and continue to be a part of this great school community. I truly value learning about each experience, wherever you are. I look forward to connecting with the wonderful people who have created powerful stories told across the globe. Let us celebrate what makes us ALL Country Day Ready! DrewBucs!Witman ’06 Director of Alumni Relations

Alumni Matters

In May, friends and family of the late Janis Dowd gathered to dedicate the new pool in her memory, including her husband, Frank Dowd ’74, and her children, Will Dowd ’14, Diana Dowd ’16, and Sally Dowd ’16. The Janis Dowd Pool features an 8-lane competition pool, a 5-lane warm-up pool, and space for more than 550 spectators to cheer them on. In his remarks, Interim Head of School David Mancos shared, Scan this QR code or visit charlottecountryday.org/ AlumniWeekendPics to see pictures from all weekend activities.

“The Dowds have been a part of Country Day for many decades, and the schoolveryrepresentsfamilythebestofourcommunity.”

“The Dowds have been a part of Country Day for many decades, and the family represents the very best of our school community. This space, named in loving memory of Janis, is just one example of their tremendous dedication to our school. From the Dowd Science Building to the Dowd Student Center and Dowd Field, their leadership has shaped our identity as a community and impacts thousands of students, and their teachers and their families every day.”

Alumni Weekend 2022 kicked off with the Alumni Volunteer & Distinguished Faculty Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, when we honored Glenn Sherrill Jr. ’89 with the Alumni Service Award. That evening, members of 30 classes of alumni celebrated their Class Reunions. Although many classes had their reunions postponed two years due to the pandemic, everyone enjoyed celebrating in clusters together. On Saturday, we hosted the first BIPOC Alumni Reunion on campus and alumni families also enjoyed athletics, food, and fun out on the fields. Save the date for Alumni Weekend 2023, April 28–29, celebrating the class reunions for the 8s & 3s. And please let us know if you'd like to volunteer.

Bob “Buzzy” Plyler is a beloved teacher, compassionate student advisor, and dedicated coach. After a remarkable 45 years, and several years as Country Day’s longest-tenured employee, he retired from teaching in June. However, he will stay on as our Boys’ Varsity Golf Team coach—fresh off a NCISAA state championship.SinceBobjoined the Upper School history department in 1976, he has been instrumental in the growth and evolution of the history curriculum at Country Day. He played a key role in the development of political science and Advanced Placement history courses, including U.S. History and Government and Politics. Known to many who love him as Coach Plyler, Bob has coached Varsity Golf, JV Football, and both JV and Varsity Boys’ Basketball. Under his leadership, Varsity Boys’ Golf has won 10 state championships and dozens of his student-athletes have continued to play at the collegiate level. In 1987 and 2003, Bob received the Carl Bolick Coaches Award, which recognizes coaches who best exemplify the qualities of a character builder who develops student-athletes into better people. In 2016 he was honored with the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award and in 2022 he was inducted into the Honorary Alumni Association.

Kathy Allford / 33 Years / Business Office

Patti Daniel / 21 Years / Middle School

Susan worked as a Lower School teacher for nearly two decades and is known for her gentle, thoughtful nature, as well as her unwavering dedication to her students. She was always willing to lend extra support to students individually or in groups before school. She began as an assistant teacher in kindergarten and third grade. Since 2009, she has been a lead teacher in third grade. Susan also served as grade coordinator for several years and traveled to Greece on a Faculty Renewal Grant.

Katie has been synonymous with College Counseling at Country Day for more than two decades—first as associate director, then as director since 2005. In addition to overseeing the office and counseling hundreds of students and families to find the right fit college, Katie was well connected with college admissions offices. She was actively involved with the Southern Association of College Admission Counselors (SACAC) and served on its Board of Directors for three years. She also served on the college advisory boards at East Carolina University, UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Georgia, Auburn University, and Hollins College. Katie oversaw the transition to online college searches and application, the move to a new spacious office suite, and the devel opment of programs such as the College Boot Camp for seniors. She was also an advisor to the Bow Tie Club for several years. In appreciation, the Class of 2008 dedicated the yearbook in Katie’s honor. She is also a recipient of the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award and the Hunter Family Sabbatical.

Karen Sullivan / 39 Years / Lower School

Since 1983, when computers were far from a ubiquitous part of school, home, or work life, Karen Sullivan was leading the way at Country Day as our Lower School Computer Instructor, overseeing our lab of 12 instructional computers. Over the span of nearly four decades, she created and developed the entire Lower School computer curriculum— and recreated it again and again as technology is ever changing. In the early years, Karen also taught the faculty how to use computers since these devices were new to everyone. And she transitioned from Apple to Windows and back to Apple platforms as needs changed. For many years, she also served as Special Areas Coordinator, helping to ensure multidiscipline approaches to learning. The ultimate team player and always willing to stretch, Karen took on the role of kindergarten class helper during the 2020–21 hybrid teaching year. Greatly admired by her peers, Karen won the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award three times, and she was the recipient of the O’Herron Teaching Endowment and the JR Williams Travel Grant.

Patti Daniel began her career at Country Day as a Lower School assistant teacher. Upon moving down the road to Bissell Campus in 2004, she truly found her calling as a fifth grade Language Arts/ Social Studies teacher. Patti’s fun-loving nature, great sense of humor, and amazing energy, combined with her genuine care for children, made her the perfect teacher for the Middle School years. She is known for her enthusiasm in the classroom, her detailed communication, and can-do attitude. In addition to her teaching duties, Patti also served as advisor for Student Council, the Ambassadors Club, fifth grade team leader, and Country Day Fund division chair. Patti is a recipient of a Faculty Renewal Grant, the Florence Chapman Faculty Appreciation Award, and the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award.

Trudy retired from the Lower School Educational Resource Program in February after 27 years of service. She was a tutor from 1995–2001 and then again from 2005–2022. From 2001–2005, she served as Co-Director of the Lower School program. Respected by her peers and credited with helping hundreds of children learn to read, Trudy was one of the first tutors to use the Orton-Gillingham approach in tutoring, and quickly became the tutor everyone turned to with questions regarding how to teach children with the multisensory, phonics-based approach.

Katie Elsasser / 25 Years / Upper School

Susan Powers / 19 years / Lower School

Students and faculty at the Middle School, know Kathy as the smiling face in the Bissell Campus Store. She has been in that role since 1998, cheerfully helping students with their purchases of everything from pencils and notepaper to PE uniforms and hoodies. She was also the Calendar Coordinator for 15 years, and prior to running the campus store, worked for 10 years in the Busi ness Office as the accounts payable and purchasing agent. In 2020, she received the Staff Exceptional Performance Award.
