Letter from the Editor

Assertiveness and individuality are not to be reckoned with. In design, we see how secondary hues are combined in non-traditional ways. As we turn our attention more and more to who we are and what we genuinely like, we disentangle from norms set by others and find our own path.

From taking a look at the boldest emerging fashion and design trends to a coffee in Paris with Angelina, my fictitious traveller so in tune with her surroundings, this issue gives you a small glimpse at the subtle changes that are so easily missed if we are too busy taking care of the things that we're expected to take care of, as opposed to observing the world we're in while doing them.

Happy reading,

FOCUS Monthly

I've often wondered what true passion is. As a teenager, I believed it was love. As an adult, I believe it is a career. Later on, a hobby.

It is all and none of these.

It is a force that makes you dream that which you want to pursue. It is what wakes you up in the morning as you can't wait to go dive into it. It is the intoxicating joy that flows in your veins, under your skin, your mind inundated with instant happiness, the best caffein there ever is to keep a mind alert and happy.

It is the secret to longevity, the gate to immortality. If only we can always pursue it.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

Paris week Spring-Summer

2023 saw a bold display of unprecedented variety.

From whimsy to grunge to the revival of the classic black minidress, the exploration of individuality and the 'everything goes' has never been more visible.

Among the many, three fashion trends emerged akin to the Selftropic lifestyle. They reflect the same attention to personalization and individual expression and their use in setting up a controlled mood to positively boost your experience of the everyday.

Paris and Milan

Nothing says that better than grunge. On the runway, we saw a return of the style reinvented with a bit of whimsy. It is this very mix of the unexpected with the darker side of things that makes casual belonging so appealing to those that fall in-between norms.

Colour adventure is popular and will gain more traction as the summer approaches. After all, we've done the beiges, we've done the grays, we've seen them all pass, if we do colour, will pass the same way, and we will still want a change after.

We live in a visual, geometrical world in which we perceive our physicalities through learned shapes; we feel the connection to space and ourselves through the geometries around us. In the same way that garments enhance a silhouette, the right piece of furniture can enhance the attractiveness of a space. In furniture design, we see a turn toward smooth angles and more complex combinations of materials that exude an extra layer of refinement through simple yet rich combinations.

Paris My mornings

Bonjour Jean!

Spring in Paris is underway in May, but the mornings are still chilly. European standards?

I found the perfect table to sit at and spy on the busy crowd. The city carries its scents in every molecule of air that dips into my nostrils, infused with strong coffee and the perfumed whiff of sharply dressed women hurrying by.

There is little talk in these cracks of dawn, yet they are hardly quiet. Mopeds are honking, here and there, a slight metallic clatter of butter knives from waiters serving croissants, and sounds of the sidewalk bordered by cars accelerating at every light turning green.

Mornings are individualistic. No couples, no groups. Everyone in their solitude, organizing their minds while walking, reading the paper, sitting around me, without me, in the cafe. The occasional chat on the phone.

The heaters are on, and barrettes, and some scarfs and mittens still colour the air. You French, dress in black often, but love to accessorize colourfully.

Next to me is this older gentleman that I think mixes routines with exceptions very well - visible in his well-placed together outfit footed by forgotten slippers - or is that the latest fad?

To tell you the truth, I would love to adopt it, if it is; some of my shoes hurt my feet.

See you tomorrow, Cafe au lait, Blvd. Saint Martin, 7am sharp from Paris, with love, Angelina
