osh, how things have changed since our last issue. Covid-19 and the ensuing lockdown have had a huge impact on us all. But I know many of you have decided to use your time at home to do a spot of decorating or crafting, so I hope you find lots to inspire you in this issue. We know that living in a rented property can come with limitations as far as making it your own and injecting some personality are concerned, especially when your deposit is at stake. So on page 68 we’ve got a host of brilliant ideas to inspire you with ways you can give your rental the ‘wow’ factor and keep your landlord happy too! Few of us are lucky enough to live in huge houses and most of us struggle with cramped areas somewhere in our homes. To help you unlock the potential of your compact spaces, we’ve found some brilliant solutions on page 74. Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Emma Sutor and I live here with my daughter, Sian.
‘The living-dining room was a blank canvas; all white walls and crying out for a little colour and character,’ Emma recalls. ‘Over the years, I’ve slowly created a space that feels personal to our family. The room has dual uses – dining and relaxing – so I wanted to ensure it feels comfortable for both activities. Light, but warm; sociable, but cosy. I had a dark, solid oak floor fitted, which gives the room a bit of an aged, vintage feel and I hung Cath Kidston wallpaper on either end of the room. The unpapered walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Railings to contrast with the greenery in the wallpaper and keep it feeling snug.’
Where I live It’s a two-bedroom terrace in Redditch that was built in 1991. I’ve lived here for 29 years.
What I wanted to change The house was a newbuild when we moved in, so it was very plain. I wanted to add fun, colour and character.

How I made it my own I took the blank canvas that was our whole house and slowly built up its personality by adding colour, pattern and lots of statement furnishings.
My favourite part It has to be the memories of bringing up my two daughters here (my eldest now has a place of her own). There have been many happy moments within these four walls.

‘This house has so many precious memories’

‘I used scaffolding boards, painted black, to create the decking and the tabletop,’ says Emma. ‘String lights and greenery ensure our outdoor space feels welcoming and sociable at all times of the day’
My story... I never chose this house to be my home. Rather, it was allocated to me to rent by my local council. I didn’t have any input and I couldn’t make requests, but I felt very lucky to have been granted a great new-build and the chance to create our own family home. It was basic in appearance; no décor to speak of and just standard fixtures and fittings, but it was all we needed. Slowly, as budget would allow, I chipped away at the interiors, and watched as the once cold and bland space came to life with our décor updates. Eventually, after calling this house home for a number of years, I was offered the opportunity to buy it, which I jumped at. Then, around five years ago, the big revamp took place. I overhauled the kitchen and gave each room a new look. I wanted it to feel elegant and luxurious, but not stuffy, so I steered towards a predominately dark palette throughout, with plenty of texture, and accessories and trinkets from my interiors and antiques shop, Haystore Antiques (@haystore.interiors). I love the end result, which I document on my Instagram: @emma_sutor_interiors. As much as I’ve loved living here, I’m planning on selling this house some time in the near future to purchase my dream Victorian property with my partner. I’m looking forward to my next adventure – not to mention shopping for vintage homeware – but it’ll be sad to leave our first family home. 16 homestylemag.co.uk

Expert advice How to maintain hardwood floors Take care of wood flooring and it’ll last for years l Design a cleaning routine. Ideally, hardwood floors should be dusted daily with a microfibre cloth. Vacuum weekly or fortnightly using the floorbrush attachment – never with the beater bar as it can damage the surface – then, using a specialised hardwood floor cleaner, damp mop once a month. Consistent cleaning is the best way of preventing scratches.

l If you can, protect hardwood floors from direct sunlight using curtains, blinds or shutters. Over time, UV rays can cause hardwood floors to discolour and fade. l If your floor has a surface finish, polish it every few months using an appropriate product (this will depend on the type of finish your floor has) and buffing pad. This will reduce the appearance of scratches and restore its sheen. l Take measures to protect your floors. Use stick-on pads on the feet of your furniture to prevent scratches and consider laying rugs and mats in hightraffic zones. Be sure that they are hardwood flooring-friendly to reduce the risk of damage.

Kitchen ‘As the house was a new-build when we moved in almost 30 years ago, the kitchen was also brand new. It was fairly basic, but still functional, with standard white units and very little in the way of decorative additions,’ says Emma. ‘Eventually, I replaced the units with black gloss cabinetry and over the past year I’ve personalised it further. I painted the walls and ceiling in Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green – a beautiful shade of teal – and papered selected areas with a monochrome and gold design from John Lewis & Partners. I fitted subtle white shutters from Hillarys, so as not to detract from the other elements in the room and added accessories and display items in my colour palette of black, green, gold and pastel pink.’

‘After many years of making do with the standard white units that were in the kitchen when we moved in, I eventually upgraded to black gloss. But the biggest changes have taken place in the last year,’ says Emma. ‘I hung a gorgeous, gold-flecked paper and painted in a deep teal hue’ May 2020 19

Master bedroom ‘Classy and grand is how I like my interior schemes to appear, and I think I succeeded in the master bedroom,’ says Emma. ‘I opted for a deep, rich green for the walls, which is Craig & Rose’s Angelica, and the same dark oak flooring as I’d fitted in the living room. The wallpaper, which has a beautiful gold print, was an eBay purchase, and really complements the green. Most furnishings in this room were purchased second-hand and chosen to create the glamorous look I was after.’

Inspiring homes ‘I upcycled the chest of drawers using black paint and old brass door handles,’ Emma says. ‘It’s almost unbelievable how much you can transform an item with so few tools’
Sian’s room ‘Much like the rest of the house, Sian’s bedroom was plain and lacking in colour when we first moved in,’ says Emma.‘ It’s had a few looks over the years, but its most recent scheme is subtle and elegant. Sian and I chose Farrow & Ball’s Calamine paint for the walls and a complementary geometric print wallpaper we found on eBay. Again, I chose dark oak flooring for a snug, vintage feel and so that the house flows seamlessly between rooms.’

What I learned... l Always set aside time to thoroughly plan out the scheme before starting. This way, you save money by not buying items you don’t need and have a clear vision of what the space will look like when it’s finished. l Never follow trends. They go out of fashion so quickly, and you’re left forever playing catch-up on the latest fad. l You don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a beautiful home. There are many ways of saving, including buying second-hand, searching for low-cost alternatives and finding new uses for things you already own. ‘The beautiful, vintage tallboy was a lucky find in a junk shop,’ Emma says. ‘I cleaned it up, then painted it in a pastel hue to complement the room scheme’

Ask the hardware store to cut the copper pipe to size. Otherwise, you can buy a pipe cutter that clamps onto the pipe and spins around to cut it. To create the base, join two of the 60cm pipes together using one of the pipe tees. Secure them with the epoxy glue. Repeat this step with the other two 60cm pipes and the second pipe tee. Set aside to dry. Glue a pipe elbow to each end of the 90cm pipe and then leave it to dry. Glue the two 1.5m pipes to the two base pieces. These will form the upright sides. Set them aside to dry. Glue the two side pieces to the pipe elbows at the ends of the long pipe. Set aside to dry before using.

Living room ‘We both love a Scandi industrial look, so the floor was really important to set the tone in here. When we moved in, it was painted black, but my dad spent two days sanding it by hand. We left it bare with no varnish as we like the natural look. My style is to have a neutral backdrop that we can jazz up with accessories since I change my mind a lot. It also maximises our chances of getting picked for location shoots. I get a lot of inspiration from the other location houses I see in my job as a fashion stylist, so I’ll often take photos then look for similar ideas on Pinterest. It’s a lovely space to watch TV in evenings – it just needs some shutters to finish it off.’
Where I live My home is a fourbedroom Victorian semidetached townhouse in Manchester.
What I wanted to change The ground-floor rooms were disjointed and the kitchen was too small, so we wanted to make it open-plan. I also hated the plastic windowsills.

How I made it my own Redesigning the ground floor and extending into the footprint of the old conservatory has made a huge difference. In terms of décor, we’ve gone for neutral tones with Scandi and industrial touches.

My story... After renting in London, we moved to Manchester for work and were keen to get on the property ladder. Despite looking all over south Manchester, we couldn’t find anything we liked within budget. But when I widened my search to three miles around the city centre, our dream house popped up in Newton Heath. For a first house it was absolutely huge. There was even a big top-floor room that spans the footprint of the house, which is now used for Andy’s office and my dressing room. Within an hour we made an offer just under the asking price as we loved it so much. Although the décor wasn’t to our taste, the house had all the original features – coving, deep skirting boards and nice fire surrounds. Decorating the living room was our first priority. We then knocked down the conservatory to add a dining room extension at the side. The second reception room was turned into an open-plan kitchen and our old kitchen became a utility room and downstairs toilet. It was tough washing pots in the bath for a while, but the end result was worth it. Before we started, I’d spoken to a friend who works for an agency called UK Locations and she encouraged me to renovate the house with filming opportunities in mind. It’s been used for all sorts, from a cat food advert to a music video for The Waterboys; all of which helped pay for the renovations. Although we’re thinking of moving nearer to our parents in Sheffield, we’ve loved living here. It was the perfect house but not the perfect area, so hopefully it’s a stepping stone to get the right house in the right area. 28 homestylemag.co.uk

l Key components to the industrial look are exposed brick, metal window frames, concrete floors, super-sized factory pendants and recycled furniture. It’s all about showing off things that are normally hidden, such
as electric cables, pipes and extractor ducting. l You can still have a nod to industrial style without going the whole hog. Try exposing brickwork in a small area, such as an alcove or chimney breast. Then add a few quirky elements, such as bar stools made from an old tractor seat, vintage signs or shelves made from reclaimed scaffold boards. l To stop an industrial-style room looking too harsh or cold, add texture and warmth with tactile faux furs, lots of plants and soft lighting. Don’t feel like you have to stick to monochrome either, as large-scale colourful artwork can break up the scheme and work wonderfully with an industrial vibe.

Dining room ‘There used to be a conservatory here, so we knocked it down and built a new extension. Using the same footprint made it more cost-effective. As Andy works in project management for a consultancy in the construction industry, he found a builder who really understood our ideas, such as having exposed conduit for the wall lights. Although they had to dig down by a metre to move soil pipes, it meant Andy could have the eco insulation he wanted. Now it’s the warmest room in the house. We both love industrial style so were keen to have exposed brick and aluminium windows. Ideally, I would’ve had Crittall-style windows, but we struggled to find a manufacturer at the right price. We eventually got some lovely windows from Duration in Essex. They were our biggest expense, but they really make the room. Now this space feels much more integral to the house than the old conservatory did and it links to an outdoor seating area with festoon lights, which is lovely in summer.’

Master bedroom ‘Although the front bedroom is the biggest, we always sleep in the smaller bedroom next door. I think because it’s so massive, it doesn’t feel that cosy and there’s so much natural light flooding through here in the morning. When we ripped up the carpet in here, we were lucky to find the floorboards were already stripped so they didn’t need any work. This was one of the first rooms we decorated so, after taking out a fireplace, we’ve just worked with the light and painted everything white. It’s such a lovely room I feel like it shouldn’t be a bedroom, it should be something else. I haven’t quite worked out what yet!’

Bathroom ‘I couldn’t wait to revamp the bathroom as I hated the plastic ceiling and the awful brown tiles that looked like leather. We kept the bath and shower in the same place, but moved the sink from under the window so we could have a mirror on the wall. I did consider an industrialstyle copper-pipe tap, like we have in the downstairs bathroom, but it wouldn’t have filled the bath up quickly enough. Instead we went for traditional wall-mounted taps that are much more practical.’
Nursery ‘This is a lovely little room with loads of natural light. It’s the perfect size for a nursery – not too big and not too small. We kept things monochrome to fit with the rest of the house and it means we can easily change around accessories. Frank loves playing in here. He’s great fun in the daytime but doesn’t like to sleep much!’

What I learned... l I’ve definitely learned where to spend and where to save. If I could do it again, I’d probably spend more on lighting. For instance, the big white industrial lights in the kitchen were from IKEA due to budget, but I really wanted authentic orange factory ones. Whenever I’ve gone with my gut and spent money, such as with the exposed conduit lighting, I haven’t regretted it.

l I assumed I’d have to spend about £20,000 on a kitchen of this size, but we saved money by doing lots of research and going to IKEA with our own design. We also saved money by choosing a cheaper laminate worktop but paying a bit extra for metal trim around the edge that makes it look more expensive.

Make the look... LADDER HANGER A ladder can work in any room. Use it to display accessories or to drape a cosy blanket over, just like Rebecca
You will need Q 2 lengths of wood: 5cm x 1.6m Q 4 dowel rods: 45cm long Q Leather strapping Q Power drill Q Sharp scissors Q Leather punch Q Basic toolbox Q 16 wood screws, 1.5cm long

Measure and mark where you want the ladder rungs (dowel rods) to sit on each of the two lengths of wood. We placed ours 35cm apart. Cut eight lengths of leather strapping that are double the diameter of the rungs. Punch a hole in both ends of each leather strap. Using the markings on one of the lengths of wood as a guide, drill a pilot hole so that you can screw one of the leather straps to it. Screw one end of the strap in place. Place a rung underneath the leather strap, pull the strap over the rung and place a mark on the wood through the hole in the leather. The rung needs to fit snugly inside the leather loop. Drill another pilot hole and then screw the second end of the leather strap in to place. Once you’ve attached all of the leather straps, slide each of the rungs into the loops.

Where I live My home is a threebedroom new-build in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. We’ve lived here since 2016.

Dining Room Victoria has chosen to paint the walls a dark shade for dramatic effect. This space is open to the kitchen and the garden room, but is otherwise internal. ‘I thought a large mirror would help add light,’ says Victoria. ‘I saw four mirrors grouped as a window on a pink wall in IKEA and it gave me the idea to create a large window-style mirror in here by sticking lots of square mirror tiles onto a black background. We love entertaining, so were keen to do something a little bit theatrical.’

My story... Although David provides the beautiful tiles from his shop, Amore Tiles, this has not been a joint project. He definitely leaves the decorating to me. My style is eclectic. I love punchy colours and accents and enjoy choosing quirky, fun accessories to complement my bold décor choices. I started with the downstairs loo and really went to town. David sourced the amazing textural oak wall tiles and I added the fabulous lemur wallpaper to create a jungle feel in the smallest room. I then continued with the boldness of these choices throughout the house, going up the stairs with gorgeous wallpaper and I’ve tried to add character in a similar way to every room. New-builds can lack character, but I was grateful for the blank canvas and found it really fulfilling adding layers of interest to the neutral backdrop. I created a moodboard for each room. I commit to a space completely, researching and considering every detail, and I don’t start the next room until the last one has been completed. I like to thoroughly focus when I’m doing a project. The improvements we’ve made have all been cosmetic so far; we’ve done nothing structural – the previous owners added an extension, connecting the house to the garden. I’m considering removing the wall between the kitchen and the garden room now. I would like to learn to do more myself though – I find it stressful relying on tradesmen. Kitchen The pale cream cabinets were here when Victoria moved in. ‘They’re good quality so I was loath to change them,’ Victoria recalls. The silver laminate worktop is very practical and easy to keep clean. ‘I was able to add interest with tiles of course, but otherwise the cabinetry is here to stay. It’s quite dark in here, thanks to the extension that’s been added behind it, so we’re considering opening it up to the garden room. In which case I might have to change things up a little. It’s not my dream kitchen, but it serves a purpose.’

Painting the walls dark is a great way to add character to a new-build home. Adding punchy colours ensures that your interior is never gloomy and helps your interior work well in winter and summer. In the living room, fruity-coloured velvet furniture and cushions pop against the crisp charcoal backdrop. ‘I’ve made lighter, textural choices for the floors and used darker colours on the walls,’ Victoria says. This combination adds contrast to the scheme and cleverly unifies the downstairs rooms.

Bedroom This room is an opulent space, perfect to escape to at the end of the day. The shelf above the headboard, painted the same colour as the walls, is great for displaying Victoria’s favourite treasures. She has wallpapered the ceiling in here and it’s now considered to be the fifth wall. ‘Well, you look up a lot when you’re in bed’ she quips, ‘so it felt worth splashing out on!’ The soft furnishings and accessories are all in a sumptuous mix of soft ecru knits and velvets in taupe and dusty pinks. 44 homestylemag.co.uk

Bathroom ‘I wanted a very contemporary space,’ Victoria explains. ‘I chose very simple white sanitaryware with stark black taps. I had been planning gold or brass taps, but the black was a lot less expensive and felt a bit more futureproof. I feel as if I’ve seen a lot of gold and brass and the black was a bit different. I’m hopeful it will be on trend a bit longer. I realise it’s quite muted compared to the rest of the house, but I wanted a change of mood in here.’

What I learned... l I’ve used expensive items, such as designer wallpaper in small quantities, placing them alongside budget items. Doing so has resulted in a luxurious look for a lot less than you might expect. l Painting details in a room in the same shade as the walls creates a cohesive look. I‘ve then chosen different finishes as well for a fresh contrasting effect that adds interest.

l The simple geometry of modern architecture is there to be celebrated with bold colours, fun patterns and crisp, graphic details. Spaces can be easily played around with in a modern house, which is something I really enjoy.

Go to homestylemag.co.uk. Enlarge and print the rainbow template on two sheets of A4 paper. Stick them together with sticky tape and then cut out the rainbow shape. Fold the length of white fabric in half and place the rainbow template on top. Draw a line around the rainbow with a pencil, about 2cm from the template and then cut out the fabric pieces and set them aside. Cut out each rainbow stripe. Place the iron-on vinyl face down on your work surface, and draw around each stripe template on a different colour, then cut each one out. Take one of the rainbow-shaped fabric pieces and lay it on an ironing board. Arrange the vinyl rainbow stripes face-up and lay a clean tea towel on top. Using a medium-hot iron (with the steam turned off ), fix the vinyl to the fabric. Allow it to cool, then remove the tea towel and carefully peel off the transparent carrier layer covering the vinyl. Pin the fabric pieces together with the rainbow design in the middle and sew all the way round leaving a small opening. Turn right-side out and fill with polyester stuffing, before neatly stitching up the opening.

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Emma Davies, a stay-at-home-mum. I live with my husband, Damian, a carpet fitter, our two children, Albie and Emmie, and our little cavapoo, Teddie.
Where I live My home is a three-bed semi in Killamarsh, Derbyshire. It’s a rental property that was built 10 years ago.

What I wanted to change It’s always tough decorating a rental but I wanted to inject some personality into the magnolia interior.
How I made it my own Bit by bit, I started adding colour on the walls and texture to all the rooms, turning it into a dark, cosy home that now really reflects me and my taste.
My favourite part I love the concrete-effect wall in the bedroom. I was worried it wouldn’t work but now it’s my favourite feature.
Living Room ‘The first bit of painting I did was the grey wall in the living room – I used Blue Gravel from Crown and it’s become an accent colour for the whole house. I really like dark interiors and was inspired by images on Instagram. If I had to pick, it would be dark all the way, but because we’ve got a lot of small rooms, I have to keep a bit of light in, so I’ve painted some of the walls a very pale grey or white. The only work we’ve done to the house is cosmetic apart from renewing some of the flooring. The wooden boards in here were left over from a friend’s project, and Damian and I fitted them together, which almost ended in divorce! But, it cost nothing and looks great, and it was worth it since we knew we’d be here for a while. The artwork going up the stairs also cost me next to nothing. I bought some £4 frames from Asda and then just printed out some fab photos of my favourite designer, Vivienne Westwood and other iconic images.’

The grey paper honeycomb pompoms and fans (only a couple of pounds from eBay) were cheap and easy decorations that Emma put up at Christmas, but they looked so good she left them up. ‘I just love this chair from IKEA,’ she says. ‘I know lots of people have one but it’s such a classic and it looks good in any room’
My story... We were already renting locally but the owners wanted to sell, so some friends offered this property to us. It was well maintained but every room was magnolia and I knew I couldn’t leave it like that. Luckily the landlord said I could paint the bedrooms, which I took to mean I could decorate throughout, although he made clear that he didn’t want me to change the kitchen units or fireplace. I decorated all of the house myself and started by just doing feature walls in each room. I’m inspired by current trends, but I like to add my own twist and be a little different. I love the ‘dark side’ and enjoy trying new effects, though I did have a nightmare moment when I painted the whole dining room pink, white and gold, which really didn’t work. But my view is, it’s only paint so what’s the worst that can happen? I did have a eureka moment when I did the concrete-effect in the bedroom. Halfway through it looked terrible, but now it’s finished it looks amazing and I’m always being complimented about it on Instagram (@emmalou171275). The perfect time to decorate is when the kids are at school. I don’t like to leave rooms unfinished so I work quickly and tend to get most projects finished in a day. I can’t say I love the process, but I do love the end result and doing it myself saves so much money. Plus I get the exact look I want. I love how the house looks now and I know that if we move, all I need to do is to paint the walls magnolia again. 52 homestylemag.co.uk

Expert advice How to paint a concreteeffect wall Create a showstopper feature wall by blending dark, medium and light-coloured paint to achieve a 3D effect l Apply your dark base layer in random strokes over the whole wall. Don’t worry about a neat finish apart from the edges where the walls and ceiling meet. This doesn’t need to fully dry before you put the next layer on because you want to be able to smudge the colours. l Use the same roller or brush to add the medium colour. Don’t cover the whole wall as you want some base layer to show through, and some paint

can be thicker in places to add texture. Where the two paints meet use a sponge or rag to roughly blend the colours, but don’t be too precise – you want it to look distressed. Keep a water spray handy to wet the edges where the paint meets if necessary. At this point you may worry that it looks messy but keep going. l Finally, use a rag, sponge or dry paintbrush to apply the lightest colour, adding more random pattern. Keep the water spray handy to stop the paint from drying as you blend it. How much you blend it is key to the look – too much and it will look like clouds rather than concrete. It’s a good idea to step back now and then to see where you need to add more paint or to blend a bit more.

‘Although good quality, the kitchen isn’t really to my taste and I would love to paint the cabinets and open up the wall cupboards, but I respect that the landlord would like to keep it as it is. I really wasn’t keen on the terracotta mosaic tiles, but since it’s rented, I couldn’t stretch to changing them so instead I’ve opted for these vinyl stick-on stars from Etsy. They’re from a company called Bleucoin that specialises in tile stickers. At £70 they were quite pricey, so I decided to only cover the splashback, but they make such a difference; they update the space and are easy to remove if necessary. I’ve used stylish wooden chopping boards and kitchen accessories to cover up most of the other tiles.’

Emmie’s bedroom ‘I wanted to create a room for Emmie that was fun, but could also see her through the next few years. The room is quite small, so I kept it light with white walls and then I painted the radiator a rose gold colour to inject a bit of glitz. The terrazzo wall effect was done using a cheap A4 stencil from eBay that only cost £10. Emmie and I did it together in just a couple of hours. This also cost me virtually nothing as I used some leftover grey paint from the living room and Emmie did the gold from paint leftover from the radiator. It’s an effect that actually takes very little paint to create – one mistake people often make is using too much and then the pattern smudges.’

‘We’ve had most of our large furniture for years. I like to invest in quality items that will last and can move with us. Over time, we’ve invested in this bed from John Lewis & Partners and the Persian blanket box, which I bought locally – both quality pieces that have lasted us through all our homes. The lampshade was from IKEA and I’ve hung it quite low to make a feature of it. The blue cushions on the bed are from Asda’

Bathroom ‘The bathroom was completely plain when we moved in and luckily the tiles are simple and inoffensive. But I added a bit of texture by dry brushing some grey paint roughly over the white walls to give it my personal touch. I filled the room with lots of fake plants in macramé hangers and added touches of gold to bring a bit of warmth to the room. I’m quite lucky when it comes to flooring as my hubby is a floor fitter. So although we live in a rented property and obviously don’t want to pay too much for fixtures that we can’t take with us, we can renew the flooring at a limited cost. This vinyl flooring completely changed the look of the bathroom for only £30 and is easy to maintain as the pattern means it doesn’t show up every single mark.’
Master bedroom ‘This is my favourite room. I’m so chuffed with the concrete-effect wall. I turned to YouTube for a tutorial video to help me get the right effect. To be honest, I was a bit worried about how it would turn out when I started it, but it looks great and actually cost nothing. The base colour on the wall was already a dark blue so I just used leftovers from the grey and white that I’ve used elsewhere. I love to layer things up, and adding texture and accessories to the room was fun, particularly the faux foliage shelf.’
‘Although I love to get a bargain, I also like to support local businesses and I got this lovely macramé hanger and plant pot from Collard Manson, a gorgeous interiors shop in Sheffield city centre. I incorporate thes e buys with pieces from the high street, such as the ‘Get naked’ print from Next
What I learned... l If you rent, don’t invest too heavily in items or décor that you can’t take away with you. Always consider whether you can return any décor work you‘re planning to the original scheme and ask your landlord before you start work. l I never consider my home to be finished, but that’s not a problem as changing things fairly regularly means that I don’t get bored – and any upcycling projects don’t have to be expensive. I tend to use leftovers or samples. l I love styling my home and it never stays the same for long. I’m always on the lookout for a bargain and when I do embark on a new project, I price it up and then do research to find the cheapest way to do it.

Remove the drawers from the chest. Unscrew the knobs or handles and set them aside. Roll out the wallpaper and decide which part of the pattern you would like to use. Place the first drawer onto the paper, face down, and draw around it with a pencil. Neatly cut out the paper and then repeat with the other drawers. Using a sponge brush, apply the glue varnish to the drawer fronts, ensuring all edges are covered. Paste the paper in place, smoothing it down and making sure that it’s perfectly aligned at the edges. Cover the tops of the wallpaper with a coat of glue varnish to seal it and then each one leave to dry. Use a screwdriver to poke the holes through the wallpaper for the knobs or handles and then reattach them.

number of decorative logs you require will depend on your preference. Cut the logs to the desired measurements with the hand saw. Work out where the logs should be on each shelf; it doesn’t matter how far from each side they go, as long as they’re centred on the width of the shelf. The shelf dimensions in the example shown are 14cm x 91.5cm and the logs are centred on the shelf 7cm x 22.8cm. Use a pencil to mark the position of the screws for the logs. Lay a scrap of wood on your work surface and place a shelf on top of it to prevent drilling through into the work surface. Drill a hole through the shelf on the two points marked in step three (pic B). Using a larger drill bit that’s the same diameter as the screw heads, drill a countersink hole that’s as deep as the wood plugs in the holes you drilled in step 4. Using a smaller drill bit, make a pilot hole in the logs you’re using for the supports. Insert the screws through the holes in the shelf by hand. Next, bring the log to the shelf and locate the screw in the pilot hole, then screw the log and shelf together. Before you continue, you need to decide how you want to mask the screw heads. You can use wood plugs that

Use the hand sander along the top of each shelf to ensure a smooth surface. Select the piece you would like to be the top shelf and set it aside. Use a measuring tape to check the lengths of the logs (pic A). You’ll need a pair of support logs for each shelf. The
match the size of the screw heads, or save some of the sawdust from the drilling, add a dab of glue on top of each screw, then sprinkle the sawdust into the hole. Make sure the screws are countersunk below the surface of the shelf to leave room to mask the screw heads. Mask the screws with your chosen method (wood plugs or sawdust). If you’re using wood plugs, add a dab of glue to each screw head and place the plug into the hole. Then use a rubber mallet to tap the plug in until it’s flush with the shelf (pic C). For the second shelf, repeat steps three and four so you know where you want the logs to go, then drill the pilot holes. Attach the shelf following the instructions in steps five to eight (pic D). Repeat the process until the desired number of shelves is complete. When you have enough shelves, add the L-shaped brackets so you can attach it securely to a wall. Alternatively, if you want it to stand on the floor, attach four furniture legs beneath the bottom shelf. There needs to be a leg near each corner. Drill pilot holes in the bottom shelf that are almost as deep as the screw on the furniture leg. Finally, screw each of the furniture legs into place.

Save on energy bills Our heating and hot water bills tend to be the biggest spend so it pays to do some research to cut the cost. Switching provider is a great start, as it could save up to £461 per year, according to Energy Helpline. It only takes a few minutes to find out if you could be better off – head online to energyhelpline.com or uswitch. com and as well as checking tariffs from all the big companies, they can also handle the switch as well as fixing your new tariff so no nasty hidden price rises during the new contract. Next, upgrade to energyefficient appliances. Choosing a washing machine, tumble dryer, oven, dishwasher and fridge-freezer with an A, A+, A++ or A+++ rating will save money in the long-term as energy bills will be reduced. Boiling hot water taps also cut the cost, as they deliver instant boiling water for tea, coffee and cooking without having to waste energy boiling the kettle. Another option is to install a smart thermostat. Companies such as Hive, Nest, Tado°, Netatmo and Wiser by Drayton all offer intelligent heating and hot water control, which can be turned on and off or adjusted with app control and some are also compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant.
Reduce water wastage Slash the cost of water supply and water waste by switching to a water meter if there isn’t one already. This means you’ll only pay for the water you use rather than an estimated amount. Having a meter installed is free so get in touch with your water company for information. If for any reason they can’t supply a meter then you may be able to take advantage of a cheaper tariff. WaterSure is a scheme that can help some people with their water bills and to apply, you need to be on certain benefits and use a lot of water either for medical reasons or because your home has a certain number of school-age children. To help conserve water, look for water-efficient appliances, use half-load or eco cycles in the dishwasher and washing machine and consider infrared sensor taps that prevent the tap being left on accidentally.

Cut the cost of council tax Another big monthly outgoing is council tax but you can get a discount if you are in full-time education, live alone, are a carer, have a disability, are on a low income or are receiving certain benefits. Adults living alone for instance – or with children under the age of 18 – get a 25 per cent reduction so make sure you let your council know. Head online to turn2us.org.uk to find out what discounts and support are available. You can also spread payments over 12 months instead of the usual 10, which doesn’t give you the ‘two months off’ that many homeowners enjoy but it does reduce the monthly fee. If you think your home might be in the wrong council tax band, you could be entitled to a refund and will need to ask for a review. But keep in mind that the review may lead to your property being put in a higher band so it’s a risk you may prefer not to take.

Changing the layout made all the difference Faced with a cramped and dysfunctional bathroom, Beth Goward chose to rip everything out and start again to create her modern shower space
My room... My problem bathroom
A bit about me I’m Beth Goward, a transport support officer. I recently bought my first home – a tiny twoup, two-down terraced cottage in the Suffolk countryside.
Not only was the bathroom tired and dated, but it was also very cramped. A badly thought-out layout meant there was limited floor space and even less room to manoeuvre, mainly due to the large loo that sat in the path of the doorway. So, my first priority was finding a way to open up the space.
How I made it work I got rid of the large built-in cupboard and then moved the toilet under the window, alongside the basin to help free up space on the opposite wall for a sleek walk-in shower. The look was inspired by my love of industrial styling and a desire for practical finishes.

Keep it private Rather than invest in expensive window treatments, Beth chose an affordable film to obscure the bottom half of her window and maintain privacy. ‘My film is from Brume. I opted for a plain finish, but they also have lots of lovely patterns,’ she smiles. Beth bought her film by the metre and cut it to size, but a made-to-measure service is available.
Utilise wall space With little room to spare, Beth has made the most of wasted wall space by adding a shelf unit from Argos. Careful placement ensures it doesn’t obstruct access to the basin area. Plus, a combination of open wirework and raw timber keeps the look light and airy, while still tapping into that industrial vibe.
Choose practical finishes For designer style without the price tag, Beth chose fuss-free, faux finishes for the walls and floor. Porcelain tiles are an ideal choice for replicating luxurious marble and will help enhance light and space. Underfoot, wood-effect vinyl planks are waterproof and have a slip-resistant finish.

My experience… Although keen to get started, I had no previous renovation experience. So, on the advice of a friend, I spent some time researching styles and layout options before contacting a recommended plumber, who agreed to guide me through the process. As a shower lover, I really wanted the key feature of the room to be a spacious, spa-style showering area. But this meant moving the toilet in order to free up sufficient wall space, which initially worried me as I’d heard relocating a loo could be problematic and expensive. Luckily, ripping out the old cupboard freed up space on the outside wall, ensuring easy access to the main waste system, and I was also able to use the existing pipework for the remaining fixtures, which saved quite a lot of money. I chose a wetroom-style tray and screen to replace the bulky enclosure and help open up the room. Opting for a narrower, but longer tray also allowed me to gain extra floor space. My lovely, industrial-style grid screen was shamelessly sourced from Pinterest, but I’m pleased to say that the unusual tap and shower fittings were all my own idea. I also created a space-saving vanity by adapting a £40 vintage cabinet and teaming it with a basin which, along with the new compact toilet, now sits proudly against a smart panelled false wall, built to hide both pipework and cistern. Easy-clean porcelain tiles and vinyl flooring were always a must for me, however, it was actually my mum who persuaded me to ditch my go-to white paint, in favour of soft, warming greys. I couldn’t be happier with the result, as it really adds to the industrial feel, in what is now a modern and inviting room, with plenty of floor space.

A bit about me I’m Katie Lee and I live with my twin daughters, Lily and Anna, 10, and our dog, Baxter. Our home is a three-bedroom Edwardian house in Earsdon, Whitley Bay.

I’d never liked the awkward shape of my long and thin bedroom, and it was difficult to fit everything in. The bed was shoved up against the window and I kept noticing patches of paint that had dripped down when I painted the floorboards.
How I made it work Moving the radiator at the bottom of the bed to the wall was the game changer, as it freed up room for bespoke cupboards. My bulky corner wardrobe was repurposed as a smaller triple wardrobe so the bed could be moved into the middle. For me, creating calm is all about plants, natural materials and simple colours so I’ve used plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), whitewashed flooring and a palette of white, grey and pink.

Paint a shape behind your bed At first Katie bought a woven seagrass hanging headboard, but she was never sure about it. ‘It made loads of noise when I turned over at night and it was a real dust collector,’ she says. ‘Someone on Instagram suggested painting a shape behind it to make the seagrass work better. In the end I ditched the seagrass altogether and drew a big circle with a pencil and a bit of string, then painted it in Farrow & Ball’s Sulking Room Pink.’

Make your own set of shelves As Katie couldn’t find any ready-made shelves she liked, she had some made from inexpensive OSB. ‘I like the rough texture of OSB,’ Katie says. ‘Before, I had a wire shelving unit but I got sick of moving it every time I hoovered. Having wall-mounted shelves instead makes the room feel bigger as you can see more of the floor space.’
Go bespoke to utilise an awkward space Save money on made-tomeasure cupboards by using a pocket-friendly material such as plywood, OSB or MDF. Katie’s cupboards fill a once unused alcove and feature two shelves in each side section, which are ideal for towels, sheets and shoes. My experience… My bedroom hadn’t been touched for over 10 years. It was unloved, felt cramped and had too much furniture. I started thinking and realised we could move the radiator in the alcove at the bottom of the bed and fill the space with floor-to-ceiling plywood cupboards. My neighbour Steve used to be an engineer, so I gave him a rough drawing and he came up with a great design. He also reused the carcass from my old corner wardrobe, attached it to the wall and added MDF doors. A couple of years ago I’d ripped up the carpet and painted the floorboards white without even sanding them. The imperfections bugged me, and it was really hard to keep clean, so I picked a whitewashed laminate instead. It looks miles better and feels really calm. I was going to paint the walls white too, but I had lots of leftover light grey paint, which feels equally calming. Ideally, I’d have got a new plywood bed, but I covered the existing base with a light fabric to save money. Finally, I painted a pink circle behind the bed. I didn’t want a proper headboard as I felt like it would be another piece of furniture taking up space. Now it’s a lovely little haven where I actually enjoy retreating to.

How I made it work
A bit about me I’m Emma and I live with my husband Stu and our children, Ettie and Ollie. Our home is a four-bed 1930s semi near Brighton. You can see more of my style on my Instagram account @emmafaith_x.
We knocked down the dividing wall between the kitchen and dining rooms, and now have a large space that’s perfect for entertaining as well as keeping an eye on the children. We also bricked up the back door, which provided us with an area to hang wall cupboards and offset the space that was lost by losing the wall. Stu and I both liked the idea of having a breakfast bar where the children could eat and still chat to us while we worked in the kitchen.

Style idea Go large with a fireplace mirror for maximum impact
Invest in key pieces ‘I think the kitchen worktops make the most impact when you enter a kitchen for the first time so I wouldn’t scrimp on those. The composite we chose is cheaper than granite would have been and it’s still a really durable option.’
Give the room a focal point ‘We added the cast-iron fire to create a feature on the dining room wall and add a bit of character. It makes it feel really cosy, particularly in the winter and I love how it works with the blue wall and open shelving unit, which is useful for displaying my knickknacks and continuing the little pops of pink around the room.’
Spend time getting it right ‘I paid extra to have the cupboards colour-matched to Farrow & Ball’s Plummett – it may seem excessive but I didn’t want to be disappointed if the shade of grey wasn’t exactly what I’d been looking for. I’d matched Plummett with Hague Blue and Wevet in a Farrow & Ball showroom. I’m really happy with how well the colours work together so the hours of deliberation were worth it!’ 98 homestylemag.co.uk

My experience… When we bought this house, we had no intention of knocking the kitchen through into the dining room, but that’s what we decided to do when we were planning the new layout. We’re fortunate that Stu is a plumbing and heating engineer, so is pretty handy when it comes to renovation work. The starting point for the scheme was the dark blue. Originally, I intended to have navy cabinetry with white walls in the dining room, but I didn’t think white walls would give the cosy, intimate feel I was looking for. After much deliberating, we swapped the colour scheme around and went for grey kitchen cabinets with blue walls in the dining room. The kitchen was from an online-based retailer and we designed the layout ourselves. I’m not a huge fan of eye-level cupboards – I much prefer an open shelf to make it interesting – but as we needed to box in the boiler, we opted for eye-level cupboards either side of the extractor fan with open shelving next to the sink. I’m so pleased we did this as it allows more light to come in from the window, making the whole kitchen feel brighter. We’re so happy with what we’ve achieved with the room and love how it works as a family space.

‘To create a cohesive look, choose pinks and greys in similar tones’
Don’t feel like you have to have equal parts grey to pink. If you want a more subtle way to achieve the look, go big on the grey with pops of pink and vice versa to create a more bold, feminine style.
Break it up Add a little luxe by bringing metallics into the mix. Copper, gold and brass accents all look great with pink and grey, and will make the scheme pop. You could anchor the look with other colours – teal curtains or a black worktop would work well.
Invest in fixtures Don’t limit the look to accessories. There are some great furniture pieces in both colours that you can easily build the look around.

1 California walnut and wild mushroom gnocchi Prep and cook time 20 MINS Serves 2 Ingredients Q 2 tbsp olive oil Q 50g celery, diced Q 50g shallot, diced Q 50g carrot, diced Q 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped Q 40g dried porcini mushrooms, rehydrated in boiling water for 5 mins Q 60g California walnuts, crushed into small pieces Q 150g fresh spinach gnocchi (or regular) Q 20g parsley, finely chopped Q 15g grated Parmesan

Boil a pot of salted water and add the gnocchi. Let it cook for 1 min or until they float at the surface. Use a ladle to save some of the cooking water, then drain the gnocchi and set it aside. Sauté the celery, shallot, carrot and garlic for 3-4 mins in olive oil on a medium heat. Add the mushrooms and the ladle of water you saved from the gnocchi. Allow the ingredients to cook for another minute before adding the walnuts and gnocchi. Stir for another minute, then garnish it with parsley before serving with Parmesan.

For the sauce, heat the coconut oil in a pan and cook the onion, apple, carrot, garlic and ginger for 3-5 mins on a medium heat. Stir in the curry powder, garam masala, Chinese five spice, salt and pepper. Cook for 2 mins or until fragrant. Stir in the vegetable stock and bring to a simmer. Whisk together the soy sauce, rice-wine vinegar, mirin, cornflour and sesame oil until smooth. Stir this into the sauce and cook until it’s thickened and the veg is tender, then blend it. Slice the tofu into 4 pieces and set it aside. Put the cornflour and some salt and pepper into a shallow bowl. Put the aquafaba and breadcrumbs into two other bowls. Take each piece of tofu and coat it in cornflour, aquafaba, then breadcrumbs. In a pan, put the oil on a high heat. Transfer the tofu to the pan and cook it until golden. Drain it on some kitchen roll and set it aside. For the pickled veg, put the veg in a bowl with the vinegar and some salt, then mix well. Divide the rice between 4 bowls. Top each with a piece of tofu and some pickled veg. Drizzle each with curry sauce, then garnish with spring onions and sesame seeds.

Florentine pizza Prep and cook time 1 HOUR Serves 4 Ingredients Q 500g pack ciabatta bread mix Q 150g passata Q 3 tomatoes, thinly sliced Q 200g grated Cheddar and mozzarella cheese mix Q 260g bag spinach Q 2 medium eggs

Combine the bread mix with 280-300ml warm water to form a soft dough. Using a food processor with a dough hook, knead for 8 mins (or knead by hand for 10 mins). Place in an oiled bowl, cover and leave in a warm place for 30 mins until it‘s doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6. Knock back the dough and divide it into two. Roll each piece out into a circle roughly 28cm in diameter and place them on a greased baking tray. Spread them with the passata and top with tomatoes. Sprinkle over the cheese. Place the spinach in a large bowl, cover with clingfilm and microwave for 2 mins. Squeeze out the excess liquid and scatter over the pizzas. Make a slight well in the centre and crack an egg into it. Bake for 15-20 mins until golden.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas Mark 4. Place the sweet potato cubes on a baking tray and drizzle with the olive oil. Bake them for around 15 minutes or until they’re soft. Meanwhile whisk together all the dressing ingredients and then set them aside. Bring a small pan of water to the boil. Blanch the cavolo nero for 5 minutes or until it’s tender. Quarter, core and thinly slice the pears. Mix the cavolo nero, watercress and pear slices in a bowl and stir in most of the dressing. Dry toast the walnut pieces for 2 minutes, then add the walnuts and sweet potato to the bowl with the other salad ingredients. Crumble the blue cheese on top, then drizzle over the remaining dressing and serve.

Quarter the tomatoes, put them in a roasting tin, drizzle with olive oil, add the garlic and season. Roast them at 200˚C/180 ˚C Fan/Gas Mark 6 for 30 mins, leave to cool then blend. While the tomatoes are cooking, sauté the chopped onion in 1 tbsp of oil on a gentle heat for 5 mins. Add the garlic, chilli powder and cumin and cook for 2-3 mins. Leave to cool. Put the mince, eggs and breadcrumbs in a mixing bowl, season, add the onion mixture. Combine with your hands and roll into meatballs. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a deep, wide frying pan. Brown the meatballs in batches, setting them aside as you go. To make the chilli sauce, add the onion to the same pan (add more oil if needed) and cook until it’s softened. Add the chopped pepper and cook until it starts to soften and colour. Add all the spices and herbs, and stir everything for a few minutes. Add the blitzed tomatoes and stock. Simmer, uncovered, for 15 mins or until it has thickened. Add the meatballs and kidney beans, and simmer for another 20 mins. Sprinkle over the coriander and serve with the rice, grated cheese and soured cream.

STREET FOOD AT HOME Enjoy amazingly exotic flavours without venturing out of your front door, thanks to these recipes from new book Big Night In
Falafel with tzatziki Prep time 15 MINUTES, PLUS SOAKING AND DRAINING
Cook time 15 MINUTES Makes 20-30 Ingredients 4 225g dried chickpeas 4 1 small red onion 4 3 garlic cloves 4 2 tbsp ground coriander 4 2 tbsp ground cumin 4 1 large bunch fresh coriander 4 1 large bunch fresh flat-leaf parsley 4 2 slices rustic white bread, crusts removed 4 4 tbsp olive oil 4 vegetable oil, for frying 4 sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the tzatziki 4 1 cucumber 4 350g natural thick Greek yoghurt 4 juice of ½ lemon 4 1 small bunch fresh mint, chopped 4 1 garlic clove, crushed 4 sea salt
You’ll also need 4 food processor and a deep-fat fryer

Rinse the chickpeas, then leave them to soak in plenty of water overnight. Once soaked, put the chickpeas, along with all the other falafel ingredients except the vegetable oil, in a food processor and blend to a rough paste. Avoid the temptation of blending it too much; the falafel should still have texture when you bite into it. Heat the vegetable oil to 180°C in a deep-fat fryer. Take two dessert spoons of falafel mix and shape them into a quenelle or ball shape. Fry the falafels in batches in the hot oil until they are very dark brown (they will colour quickly, but avoid the temptation to remove them from the oil too soon. They need to fry for at least 3–4 minutes in order to crisp up properly). Remove the falafels and let them cool on a wire rack. For the tzatziki, cut the cucumber in half lengthwise. Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and discard. Grate the rest of the cucumber, then mix with a little salt and leave in a colander to drain for 10 minutes to remove the excess liquid. Stir the yoghurt, lemon juice, mint and garlic into the cucumber. Season with extra salt if necessary and serve with the falafel.

Little spinach & feta pastries Prep time 20 MINUTES Cook time 35 MINUTES Serves 6 Ingredients Q 500g fresh spinach leaves, trimmed, washed and drained Q 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing Q 1 tbsp butter Q 2 onions, chopped Q 3 heaped tbsp pine nuts (reserve 1 tbsp for garnishing) Q juice of 1 lemon Q 1 tsp ground allspice Q 150g feta, crumbled with your fingers Q a small bunch of fresh dill, finely chopped Q sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Q plain flour for dusting Q 450g ready-prepared puff pastry

Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/Gas Mark 4. Steam the spinach until it’s soft and floppy. Then drain and refresh it under running cold water and squeeze out the excess liquid with your hands. Place the spinach on a wooden board and chop it coarsely. Heat the oil and butter in a heavy-based pan and stir in the chopped onion to soften it. Add the

Baba ghanoush Prep time 10 MINUTES Cook time 30 MINUTES Serves 6 Ingredients Q 4 aubergines Q 2 garlic cloves, crushed Q 1 generous tbsp tahini paste Q juice of 1 lemon Q 2-3 tbsp olive oil Q sea salt and ground black pepper Q a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds Q chopped fresh coriander Q ½ tsp toasted cumin seeds, or 1 tsp harissa paste, to garnish Q flatbreads to serve
pine nuts and cook for 2-3 minutes until the onion and nuts begin to turn golden. Stir in the spinach, lemon juice and allspice, then toss in the crumbled feta and dill. Season the mixture with a little salt and pepper and leave it to cool. Lightly dust a surface with flour and roll out the pastry thinly. Using a pastry cutter, or a cup’s rim, cut out as many 10cm rounds as you can, lightly dusting each with flour. Take each round and spoon a little of the spinach mixture into the middle. Pull up the sides and make a pyramid by pinching the sides together with your fingertips – it doesn’t matter if one of the sides opens during cooking, as that’s part of the appeal. Lightly grease two baking sheets and place the pastries on them. Brush the tops with a little oil and bake them in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until they’re golden brown. Roughly 5 minutes before taking the pastries out of the oven, spread the reserved tablespoon of pine nuts onto a small piece of aluminium foil and toast them in the oven until they turn golden brown. Once you’ve placed the little pastries on a plate, sprinkle the toasted pine nuts over them and serve while they’re still hot.

Garnish with fresh sage and blackberries, or if you’re not a fan of sage, substitute with mint or other fresh herbs.

Blend the grapefruit juice, lime juice, salt and ginger. Divide the mixture between two glasses filled with ice. Top up the drinks with sparkling water and stir. Sunny style I’m a self-confessed vintage addict and describe my interior style as eclectic with a boho twist. Home is a 1950s renovated bungalow, crammed full of thrifted items and vintage furniture. One of my favourite rooms is our dark green lounge with an exposed brick fireplace. I painted the fire surround a gorgeous sunny yellow and love how it lifts and connects the whole space, offsetting the mid-century pieces such as the funky green lampshade and sunburst clock. @bungalow_fifty8
In 2018 I purchased my little run-down end terrace house and had barely any money leftover for renovating. I decided to have a go at upcycling the pine units in the kitchen myself, rather than use what little budget I did have on getting new ones. Jane Cumberbatch We talk to the interior designer, stylist, photographer and author about her life How did it all begin? I started out as an editorial assistant on House & Garden magazine in the mid ’80s. A few months in, the editor told me to sit at the recently retired decorating editor’s desk. I was thrown in at the deep end, putting together roomset features in Shoreditch studios and learning the tricks of the trade from the interior decorators of the day!

Jane loves simple, timeless design
I work from home in South London and, after dealing with the cat and dog, I might head upstairs to my office and check my emails or, if there’s a shoot on at my home, which is also a location house, I’ll race around cleaning and tidying. I also think about ideas for my blog and a new book about the garden that I’m working on. I take photos, too, so I might snap a still-life in the house or garden at some point.

Several times a week during the winter, I swim in icy, 6°C water at Tooting Bec Lido, wearing only my black swimsuit, neoprene gloves and booties. Friends think I’m crazy, but there’s something so invigorating about it!
Describe your style It’s about trying to achieve a balance – simple, basic design that combines function and form. It’s crisp, clean, classic and timeless. I love to create simple, white backgrounds with shots of colour, but also enjoy painting rooms in soft greys, greens and blues. 122 homestylemag.co.uk
Can a home be both stylish and practical? Yes – and minimalist, too! Edit out stuff and only keep what’s beautiful and useful. Focus on what’s important to you and how you want to live. When my children were small, for example, I chose natural cottons and linen that could be washed easily and take hard wear.
Who are you stalking on Instagram? One of my all-time favourite photographers of food and nature is @tessatraeger; I get interiors and garden inspiration from @benpentreath; and thoughts on colour and texture from the art director and stylist @marytnorden.
Who would you swap homes with and why? My old friend, the designer, writer and stylist, Tricia Foley (@yaphank1) has a wonderful and simple white aesthetic. I visited her Long Island home recently and didn’t want to leave the airy interior with its amazing views of the salt marshes and ever-changing skies.
What is your proudest career moment? I wrote and styled Pure Style, my first book, in 1996 and felt an amazing sense of achievement after being turned down so many times by publishers!
