elcome to the spring issue of DuJour, starring one of my favorite actresses and style icons, Sienna Miller. The actress is back where we like to see her: in a leading role in the Netflix series Anatomy of a Scandal (now streaming). What you’ll find inside the magazine are celebrity interviews (Anya Taylor-Joy and Victoria Beckham), luxe interiors and features on the most magnificent gardens in the world. Profiles of the hottest theatrical productions, including Cyrano at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with James McAvoy, The Minutes and Mr. Saturday Night, are also on offer. We also pay tribute to creative visionaries like Louis Kahn and Nick Cave, whose work is honored in a new book and exhibition, respectively. Travel-wise, there are so many new hotel openings in Europe to look forward to, from Scotland to the new Milos hotel in Athens. Closer to home, Washington, D.C., has a lot of exciting new hotels, restaurants and sights to visit. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did producing it. Stay tuned for much more to come.

AMERICAN WOMEN

Meet Reden, a new direct-to-consumer footwear brand creating stylish and wearable shoes “Why can’t our shoes do more for us?” asks Nelli Kim, founder and CEO of Reden. As a cancer survivor with 20 years of experience in the luxury footwear space, Kim saw a hole in the market for an upscale and fashion-forward line of shoes that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing style. After her recovery, Kim suffered from chronic foot pain related to her chemotherapy—a common ailment among cancer survivors. She spent two years working with an orthopedic surgeon crafting a line of footwear that looks good and feels even better with built-in orthotic insoles, memory foam padding, and shock-resistant outsoles. After launching through Kickstarter, the Reden line features classic and stylish staples for men and women, including loafers, flats and brogues in luxurious leathers and bold colors.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Weekend Max Mara’s collaboration with stylist Gabriella Karefa-Johnson is a love letter to her family Bold, eclectic and full of joy, Weekend Max Mara’s newest collaboration is an irreverent and playful combination of shapes, colors and patterns. Designed by stylist Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and photographed by supermodel Gigi Hadid, the Family Affair collection is full of warm-weather staples for women of all ages. The dresses, trousers and scarves combine modern silhouettes with ’70s-inspired prints and patterns, creating a riot of color. “Visual dissonance is really at the heart of a lot of the styling I do—I like when the mind has to work a bit to comprehend what the eyes are seeing,” says Karefa-Johnson. Her main inspiration for the collection is her family, particularly her globe-trotting grandmother. “Style was effortless for her,” she says, “and that’s precisely what I wanted to communicate in this collection—a sense of innate, amazing style with very little effort.”

ome has a certain spirituality as a city,” says Fendi’s artistic director, Kim Jones. “Not necessarily just something religious, but something present in the layers of its history. That’s what my vision for Fendi is all about: celebrating the power of women.” From its ancient past to the exciting present, the Italian capital was the perfect location for Jones’ Fendi women’s couture presentation. “When you walk down the street in Rome, you are constantly moving back and forth in time,” says Jones. “Where we work feels very modern, but you pass monuments on the way there. There’s a total timelessness to the city: a historic vein which runs through it, but also a movement that is projecting forward.” Fendi was started in Rome in 1925 and has always honored the city’s historic codes. “Rome, for me, has so many layers to it,” says Jones. “It’s such an ancient city. We’re always thinking of the past, present and future of it. The inspiration came from the idea of different times and that very spiritual side of Rome, which becomes almost

celestial; almost space.” This collection’s sci-fi silhouettes are expertly crafted using futuristic techniques, finding harmonies between past and present. Ethereal fabrics like duchesse silk and organza are illuminated with traditional beading and mother-ofpearl, while heat-molded leathers are embroidered with micro sequins, mink and pearls to create powerful, armor-like finishes. “The idea of the future and what’s going on in the world made me think about space,” says Jones. “I’ve been reading and looking at lots of sci-fi recently. I read Dune again because I’d watched it and I wanted to remind myself what the book was like. And the actual Star Wars book by George Lucas.” Volcanic stone and hematite are embedded into bags, and natural crystal geodes and amethysts adorn jewelry in a nod to the city’s archeological remnants of ancient civilizations. ■

here are many myths about toners, used to remove dirt and oil from the skin, that have been debunked over the years. “There weren’t a ton of options for treating blemishes or congestion many years ago, when harsh astringent toners were prevalent,” says celebrity aesthetician and skincare entrepreneur Shani Darden, whose best-selling Sake Toning Essence combines the best of a toner with the benefits of an essence. “A common—though very wrong—idea was that in order to treat blemishes, you needed to dry the skin out. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Drying out the skin can actually exacerbate breakouts.” Alcohol in toners was a major culprit. “While toners of the past contained alcohol for the purpose of drying out excess oil and treating acne breakouts, we now recognize that alcohol is far too harsh on the skin,” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the Shafer Clinic in New York City. “Today’s formulas are created more consciously to nourish—not strip—the skin.” Different formulations now target skin types and concerns. “Today, toners are created with ingredients that offer even more benefits to the skin, not just toning,” says Amanda Macino, Valmont’s director of training for North America. “They are skin type–specific, including for dry skin, which wasn’t always the case.” The newest crop of toners have different skill sets and ingredients for a variety of skin types. “They are not one-size-fits-all, because nowadays, toners are more of a counterpart to serums,” says Emily Parr, co-founder of skincare brand HoliFrog. “I’m seeing toners with exfoliating acids or enzymes, others with a plethora of antioxidants and even more that focus on hydration. Toners are far less about toning and more about delivering a set of actives to the skin that are not present elsewhere in your regime.” HoliFrog’s new hydrating and disinfecting Utopia Microf lora Toner features hypochlorous acid, black bee honey ferment, apple cider vinegar and sunf lower sprout. “I became increasingly intrigued with hypochlorous acid and its benefits for everyone from eczema sufferers to acne-prone people like myself,” says Parr. “Its ability to act as an antimicrobial and anti-inf lammatory really excited me, so I knew that a toner would be the best fit for this ingredient in our lineup.” Used after the cleansing step to f lood the skin with active nutrients, toners are meant to balance, hydrate and brighten the skin so that it is prepped for the products that follow. “A toner should be used when there is an active set of ingredients that are not being delivered in your serums or moisturizer,” says Parr. “There is no one universal toner that everyone should be using after they wash their face, because it's a function of the active ingredients in the toner and the active ingredients in the steps that follow the toner.” Toners also shouldn’t be used to break down makeup. “I recommend that everyone use toner—not for removing makeup, but for rebalancing your skin and giving it an extra dose of clarifying, brightening and hydrating benefits,” says Dr. Engelman. ■

ritish fashion and beauty entrepreneur Victoria Beckham ventured into the beauty space, creating two best-selling capsule collections with Estée Lauder before launching Victoria Beckham Beauty in 2019 in partnership with industry veteran Sarah Creal. Beckham set out to create a new standard of clean luxury: her makeup and skincare products are cruelty-free, sustainably minded, cleanly formulated and highperforming. “We wanted to create a beauty brand with a strong focus on clean formulas that really perform and feel luxurious in your routine,” explains Beckham. “We didn’t think there was anyone out there that was pulling these futuristic elements together.” Victoria Beckham Beauty stems from the idea that beauty should complement and enhance the dynamic life you lead, and its devoted fans like Melanie Grant, Tracy Anderson, Cassandra Grey, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner clearly agree. “We wanted to create something that is desirable, a pleasure to use and has a soul,” says Beckham. “Our brand is coming from our point of view, and we are creating things that are authentic to our vision. Everything we do brings together clean ingredients, responsible sourcing and sustainably minded design; our goal from inception has been to create true luxury performance in clean beauty.” Here’s how the entrepreneur spends a typical day in London.

7:00 A.M. I wake up and get Harper up and ready for school. We catch up over breakfast and I get through emails from overnight while she packs up her bag. With my fashion team based in London and beauty based in NYC, I’m always on. 8:00 A.M.: David and I like to take Harper to school together. After the school run, we go to a workout with our trainer. 10:00 A.M.: I shower as quickly as I can and head to the office. I love being in person with my team. These past years, working remotely, have been a challenge. 10:30 A.M.: Every day is different, but I pack my days with back-to-back meetings to try to be as productive as possible. For example, today I met with my design team on our new monogram that will debut in our pre-autumn/winter collection. I am excited for this design and to extend it into new categories such as outerwear.

1:30 P.M.: I have a working lunch with my team. This is typically my first meal of the day. For the rest of the afternoon, I snack on almonds to keep myself full until dinner. 6:00 P.M.: I get home for dinner with the family. This is the most important part of my day. It’s sacred in our household. Afterwards, we relax together, typically watching some television. Harper is really into Newsround, and David insists on watching Friends or Modern Family nearly every night. 8:00 P.M.: Harper and I both love our evening beauty routines. I love a warm bath, and we typically do a face mask together as we wind down from the day. I am pretty religious about my skincare. Having clean, healthy skin is most important, so I cleanse my skin with Augustinus Bader Cleansing Balm to remove my makeup. After that, I use my Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader Cell Rejuvenating Power Serum and Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturizer. 10:00 P.M.: I get in bed and catch up on some email before putting the phone away. I’m trying to practice healthy sleep habits, which means less phone time and more mindfulness. I sleep in my VB silk pajama set with my Victoria Beckham Beauty x Slip Silk Eye Mask. And I have crystals on my nightstand for some extra clarity. ■

What’s your first memory of Dior? I used to wear Miss Dior Cherie as a teenager and I was completely obsessed with it. I remember discovering it and being heartbroken when it was discontinued. I later found out, having met with the incredible Dior patrimony team, that the difference is that they took out the popcorn notes, which makes a lot of sense considering my job and my proclivity toward popcorn. It makes a lot of sense that I liked something that was popcorn-scented. What inspires you most about the brand? The sense of timeless grace that the House has, but with this real sense of freshness. It feels like Dior dresses the modern woman while still retaining this quality of elegance, and I love that. It feels very graceful. What do you love about Dior Addict lipstick? I love the energy it gives me when I put it on. I am someone who keeps quite a bare face, because whenever I do work, I have a lot of makeup on. In my own time, I don’t tend to wear as much. The most I will do is put on lipstick. It’s very easy to do and yet it completely changes your attitude, and I think that’s what Dior Addict is for me. I love that it feels so playful, that you can dress up your lipstick and it’s refillable. It has this wonderful shine to it that I really enjoy. What is your daily beauty routine? I wash my face every morning and apply toner and sunscreen. That’s my morning routine; at night, I do the same except instead of sunscreen, I put on the Dior Prestige serum and cream because it not only helps fight against all daily aggressions, but also help renew my skin elasticity. It feels really luxurious, and the beautiful smell also helps me unwind and relax. I love roses, and it’s so lovely to go to bed smelling like one. What beauty products are always in your bag? Dior Prestige La Mousse Micellaire face cleaner, Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara in Black and Dior Addict lipstick in the shade Dior 8. I look for a unique shade in a lipstick, as well as staying power. I love it when someone compliments me on the shade of my lipstick or they say they haven’t seen that shade before. ■

ith the recent news of President Biden’s executive order directing federal agencies to create a strategy for digital assets like cryptocurrency and tasking the Treasury with thinking about the future of money and payment systems, the asset class is getting more mainstream. Over the past five years, about 40 million people in the U.S. have invested in, traded or used cryptocurrencies. Hollywood entrepreneurs like Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Mila Kunis are speaking out to encourage women to educate themselves about crypto and NFTs, and the New York Times recently published a standalone section on cryptocurrencies. Mike Poutré, the founding CEO of The Crypto Company, one of the first publicly traded companies to invest in blockchain, has launched a specialized hedge fund to directly invest in businesses associated with distributed ledger technologies. Terraform is primarily interested in emerging vectors and opportunities in disruptive technology with a focus on blockchain, digital currencies and fintech. With more than 25 years in the banking and corporate finance industry, Poutré, along with co-founder and managing partner Ryan Fabian, is leading the charge with Terraform Capital, a Ventura County–based lifestyle fund. Fabian, a former cryptography specialist for U.S. Air Force Intelligence and the National Security Agency, technology specialist and seasoned software developer, had known Poutré for years; first as friends, then colleagues. “Hearing Mike’s vision, I wanted to be a part of whatever he was doing,” says Fabian. “I was stepping outside the bounds of what I knew at the time to get into the entrepreneurial vertical.” Fabian now runs technology deal selection and sourcing and the Terraform fund has invested in companies like Robinhood and Elon Musk’s SpaceX. “It’s all about a democratization of capital and eliminating the middleman,” says Fabian.

“Most people have recognized that governments and financial institutions have abused the rights of currencies for a long time,” says Poutré. “It’s a natural want in this day and age. This is a new way of doing business.” For this reason, the Terraform fund invests in blockchain infrastructure. “This is helping the masses,” he says. “Everyone can benefit. We really shine in an environment where people recognize that digital assets and blockchain asset classes are those they need to be represented in.” So it made sense to diversify the offerings. Terraform’s new digital assets and cryptocurrency quantitative fund, Europa, provides investors with a solid platform giving representation in this new and important asset class. Europa utilizes both smart indices and advanced digital algorithms to effectively and automatically manage volatility and risk 24/7. As a result, it can respond to market changes with lightning-fast speed, giving investors peace of mind knowing their investment is protected, managed and actively growing around the clock, 365 days a year. “Initially, we stayed away from crypto and digital assets,” says Poutré. “But now, it’s a natural segue. We noticed that the other people putting out digital assets funds are tying people up for a year, so, using technology that we helped design, we’re using a lot of the assets that we had already built to build a better product.” The Europa fund, with a minimum investment of $250,000, employs a three-pronged

investment strategy targeting superior risk-adjusted returns in crypto markets: It maintains broad exposure to the largest tokens through smart indexings; its algorithmic trading models seek to generate alpha while providing some protection from bear market cycles; and it employs fundamental analysis in selecting the most promising small-cap projects. Having both Terraform and Europa is additive to clients. “Terraform proliferates the backbone of blockchain tech, and every time we invest in a new company, it’s novel to both Mike and me in a way that is so game-changing,” says Fabian. “The systems we have in place are doing something no one has ever done: uniting disparate and separate banking systems into one global system. Every new opportunity is a powerful and novel puncture into that membrane that we’ve subconsciously created. This is just a different way of looking at the equation, and the pace of things is so fast, it’s almost daunting.” ■

A new book chronicles the life of publisher and women’s rights movement pioneer Miriam Leslie Diamonds and Deadlines: A Tale of Greed, Deceit, and a Female Tycoon in the Gilded Age (Abrams) by Betsy Prioleau is the first major biography of the glamorous and scandalous Miriam Leslie, titan of publishing and an unsung hero of women’s suffrage. Among the fabled tycoons of the Gilded Age—Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt—is a forgotten figure: Leslie. For 20 years she ran the country’s largest publishing company, Frank Leslie Publishing, founded by her husband, which chronicled postbellum America in dozens of weeklies and monthlies. A pioneer in an allmale industry, she made a fortune and became a national celebrity and tastemaker in the process. But her name was also a byword for scandal: She f louted feminine convention, took lovers, married four times and harbored unsavory secrets that she concealed through a skein of lies and multiple personas. Both before and after her lifetime, glimpses of the truth emerged, including an illegitimate birth and a checkered youth. Diamonds & Deadlines reveals the unknown, sensational life of the brilliant and brazen “empress of journalism” who dropped a bombshell at her death: She left her entire multimillion-dollar estate to women’s suffrage—a never-equaled amount that guaranteed passage of the 19th Amendment. In this dazzling biography, cultural historian Prioleau draws from diaries, genealogies and published works to provide an intimate look at the life of one of the Gilded Age’s most complex, powerful women and an unexpected feminist icon. Ultimately, Diamonds & Deadlines restores Leslie to her rightful place in history, as a monumental businesswoman who presaged the feminist future and reflected, in bold relief, the Gilded Age, one of the most momentous, seismic and vivid epochs in American history.

M

rs. Frank Leslie was a Gilded Age superstar, an “Empress of Journalism” who ran the largest publishing company in America for twenty years and made a fortune. Her past was a closely guarded secret. Miriam Follin was nearly seventeen, hungry in New York, and thrown on her own resources. Her choices were stark. Little wonder she came to believe that “life [was] cruel and experience [was] pitiless,” or that she lamented the plight of “the unprotected girl” in America and sought “loyal and manly protection.” Opportunities for women in the early [1850s] in Manhattan were few and thankless. Seamstresses, f lower-makers, map-colorers, straw-braiders, and book folders endured “never-ending daily toil” under harsh bosses for as little as seventy-five cents a week. Volunteer societies, the House of Industry and Home for the Friendless, aided destitute women by reading them scripture and teaching these thankless trades.

Sex workers, on the other hand, earned an average of five dollars a night, and enjoyed a modicum of autonomy, especially if they freelanced part-time, which many did. An estimated fifty thousand women practiced prostitution in the city mid-century—20 percent of the female population. Successful demimondaines with sobriquets like “Princess Anna” and “Aspasia” promenaded down Broadway dressed in tight-corseted gowns of frilled ribbons and flounced satin petticoats in the latest French fashions. There’s an off-chance Miriam resisted the call. Investigative reporters, however, entertained no doubts: She was, they charged, a conspicuous “Lais” (prostitute) who spent a “fiery youth” on the town and engaged in “wanton” doings. Everywhere “stories [were] afloat about her.” When she looked in the mirror, she must have seen her qualifications. She wasn’t conventionally pretty; she had a hooked nose, square masculine jaw, wiredrawn mouth, and protrusive eyes. But she had filled out and boasted a figure that was the mid-nineteenth-century ideal: full, voluptuous breasts, a wasp waist, and tiny hands and feet. Plus masses of thick, dark fusilli curls. And whether she admitted it or not, she possessed a dusky, exotic “unfamiliar type of beauty.”

“agitated and excited,” and asked to see his lawyer. Susan and the sheriff seemed to have anticipated this. Unfortunately, the lawyer couldn’t be reached, nor could Peacock “procure the $3,000 bail” (provided the sum existed) since banks were closed. Besides, the sheriff admonished, he had committed the crime of “carnal connection” with an unmarried female of “previous chaste character,” and would pay. Newspapers would publish the offense; he would lose his job and be locked in jail. Ruined. However, the sheriff indicated, he could save himself. All would be forgiven if he married the young lady that night. Peacock recoiled and requested “time to consider the matter.” At this, the sheriff pulled him aside and impressed upon him the liberal terms: He didn’t have to cohabit with Miss Follin, support her, or see her again, and he could annul the union after two years. The lady just wanted his “name” and a marriage certificate. Still resistant, Peacock was taken from his rooms on Broome and Broadway and frog-marched to Tenth Street. The night life in Tompkins Square was at its usual pitch when they arrived: drunks bawling “no, nay, never, no more”; a ghal crying, “Oh git out—you Mose!”; and a night cart of latrine waste drawn by Black men in bandannas lumbering by. When they reached number 319, “the mother of the girl appeared” and ushered them into a dim front room. She summoned her daughter and an awkward moment ensued. In the preparations, someone had forgotten to hire a justice of the peace. At last, Alderman Nathan C. Ely appeared on the stoop, and the ceremony began. “Do you take this woman your lawful wife?” No reply. Nevertheless, the ceremony proceeded. The bridegroom sealed the “terms” with a dollar and left without a word to Miriam. From then on, the couple “passed each other in the public street without any recognition.” Although the arrangement seemed a net loss for Miriam, there were benefits. Marriage in the 1850s offered few advantages; under the rule of coverture, women submitted to male authority and lost both “title to their earnings or property” and their independence. By living apart, Miriam preserved her autonomy and obtained marital status, which supplied instant respectability. In the world of strangers, establishing a good reputation was a crucial survival skill. And the “seduction” charge helped in another way. Since Peacock couldn’t be guilty unless Miriam was of “chaste character,” she was revirginated overnight. ■

DUJOUR.COM

Her theatrical flair, fostered by New Orleans and her home life, would also have served her well. Putting identities on and off, performing a part, and “staging” herself came naturally. She had, too, the necessary do-or-die ambition, sharpened by want, fear, underclass spite, and rage for riches. There was much cash could rectify besides rent, such as shame and social exile. But she needed guile to navigate New York’s mean streets and byzantine underworld. Dissimulation and appearance ruled in this subterranean Gomorrah, and costume was required armor—an explanation of Miriam’s celebrated fashion savvy. She quickly discarded her father’s admonitions on the “superabundance of jewelry” and ostentatious dress, and changed her name to “Minnie.” Entry into the trade would have been easy. A Dr. Collyer on Broadway hired women to pose in “tableaux vivants,” after which the “model-artists” could arrange rendezvous with spectators at the Bowery Hotel, “no references required.” Popular assignation places, some semi-respectable, abounded: “naughty third tiers” in theaters, restaurants with private rooms, ice-creameries, concert halls, evening art galleries, and dances. Each night an ambitious “Aphrodite” could choose from a dozen large public balls. Early in the fifties Miriam’s half-brother, Noel, remarked on her attendance: “I am glad to hear you so enjoyed the balls you attended.” But, he teased, “you did not name your escort,” and suggested several candidates: “our friend Lamp Umbrella or Mr. Denpexter or . . . [men] (of the like kind).” Clients she joked about? He continued in a more mercenary vein. Be assured: She was “well up in the market. I cannot say less than two hundred thousand for you. If you are in luck you may catch half a million.” No mention of her Latin lessons. Susan, meanwhile, spoke often to her daughter “about [her] beaux.” They might have been their sole support. In 1854, her father abandoned all pretense of business. Why at this moment Miriam embroiled herself in a scandal is a mystery. Contrary to her father’s admonition against “vulgar” bijouterie, she developed a passion for expensive jewelry. The recently built Tiffany might have been the catalyst—a white marble palazzo at 550 Broadway owned by the “King of Diamonds” whose show windows glittered with parures, bandeaux, rings, pendants, and corsage ornaments mounted on springs to increase the sparkle. For “Minnie” these gems assumed a talismanic significance, incarnating status, distinction, and wealth. “Within the heart of a diamond,” she maintained, was “a soul,” a glorified image of her own. She didn’t pass Baldwin & Co. jewelers on Broadway without stopping. Inside, she met the dapper clerk, David C. Peacock, a “gay young fellow,” and one thing led to another. A bit of negotiation followed: favors in exchange for the loan of certain diamond pieces in the display case. This continued until her mother pried out the truth, and revealed a side of herself at variance with a “very refined and cultured gentlewoman.” She advanced on City Hall and demanded Peacock be arrested for criminal seduction. As of 1848 in New York State, “sexual intercourse by the defendant under promise of marriage” was a misdemeanor, punishable by up to five years in the Tombs, Manhattan’s foulest prison. When Peacock received the arrest warrant the night of March 24, 1854, he expressed disbelief. He protested his innocence, grew

The office offers the latest breakthroughs and therapies in health technology to help maximize energy and strength, prevent disease and extend your health span. “Regenerative medicine seeks to replace tissue or organs that have been damaged by disease, trauma or congenital issues versus the current clinical strategy that focuses primarily on treating the symptoms,” explains Dr. Victor. Originally trained as a cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Victor performed thousands of liposuction procedures over the years. “I learned that the fat I was throwing away contained numerous capillaries, and in the walls of these capillaries were stem cells.” Twenty years ago, he traveled to Athens, Greece, to learn more about the possibilities of stem cell therapy. “I came back to New York City excited and began integrating stem cell therapy into my practice using the technology I learned, using enzymes to break up the fat to harvest the stem cells.” Dr. Victor then invested in a mechanical method to separate stem cells from the capillaries in the fat (or adipose tissue) and built a cellular lab in which to process the matter. “Stem cell therapy is useful where modern medicine fails,” says Dr. Victor. “So, we can help with ailments that traditional medicine fails to fix. Aging is inflammation and a decrease in circulation. Stem cell therapy helps to vastly reduce inflammation and increase circulation so you feel younger and better.” When the Solow Building’s owner, Stefan Soloviev, decided to add amenities to the iconic Midtown space, he believed tenants would love a medical wellness center and so he reached out to Dr. Victor, who was looking for a new office space. At 9 West, ReGen Medical has a full staff of emergency room physicians and cosmetic dermatologists, all supported by nurse practitioners and physician assistants. When it’s completed in a few months, the new space will offer regenerative medicine, fitness, wellness and aesthetics services as well as a membership, concierge-medicine service for 24/7 access to care for building residents and private patients alike. Dr. Victor is also excited to be able to offer patients a full lab to process their bloodwork and other samples and special medical imaging equipment. ■

Jane Lynch ACTOR

Lynch, star of Glee and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, grew up in Illinois listening to the Broadway cast album of Funny Girl. Now, the actress is starring as Fanny Brice’s mother in a revival of the show opposite Beanie Feldstein. “I couldn’t be more thrilled. It’s such a wonderful American musical,” says Lynch. The film version, starring Barbra Streisand, “always doubles me over with laughter and breaks my heart wide open.” The show marks Lynch’s return to Broadway after she appeared as Miss Hannigan in an Annie revival a decade ago. “You put your absolute whole self into it,” she says. “[Broadway] feels more like home to me than any other place in the world.”

Tracy Letts, PLAYWRIGHT AND ACTOR, AND Anna Shapiro, DIRECTOR

“I never want to perform in one of my own plays, and, in fact, I have never performed in one of my own plays before now,” says Letts, whose latest play to hit Broadway, The Minutes, is about a city council meeting in a fictional town. When the show first premiered at Steppenwolf in Chicago, the role of the mayor was played by another performer. In New York, Letts steps in. “Mayor Superba

is just a good role for me,” explains Letts. “I mean, objectively speaking, I would cast me.” “In Chicago, we are the home team,” says The Minutes director Shapiro. “Oddly, [audiences there] can be harder on us.” That said, she adds, “Every time we work in New York, we always suspect no one will come. So we’re always pleasantly surprised.”

Lileana Blain-Cruz DIRECTOR

Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, written in 1942, is often performed regionally, but it hasn’t seen a large New York production in quite some time. Enter Lincoln Center and Blain-Cruz. “I was looking for a play that wrestled with what it means to be alive in the midst of chaos, a play that would speak to the moment we’ve been living through,” she says of what drew her to the piece. “The Skin of Our Teeth was a catalyst for so much experimental theater. It gets at the way life can be a combination of joy, pain, excitement, hilariousness, grief and strangeness all at the same time.”

Patrick J. Adams ACTOR

Before performances started for the revival of Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out on Broadway, Adams, who starred for many seasons on the television series Suits, was initially scared of “showering in front of 500 people every night.” The play, about a baseball player who unexpectedly comes out of the closet, features a few naked shower scenes. “What’s scarier now is that it’s my job to kick off the narrative and draw the audience in,” explains Adams. “I take it seriously and don’t want to let down the playwright or the audience.”

Joaquina Kalukango ACTOR

Originating a role in a brand-new Broadway musical like Paradise Square “was a huge dream of mine,” says Kalukango, who was Tony-nominated for her performance in Slave Play in 2020. By all accounts, Kalukango blows the roof off the Barrymore Theatre as Nelly O’Brien, the owner of a saloon in Manhattan during the Civil War. “I feel a strong connection with Nelly’s bullshit meter,” Kalukango adds. “She can spot a liar a mile away, and so can I.”

Alex Edelman ACTOR

DUJOUR.COM

Nobody guessed that a solo show from comedian and writer Edelman would become a hit, but that’s what happened with Just for Us, which is now running through late July at the the Greenwich House Theater. Originally, the piece, about a strange and uncomfortable excursion Edelman took one night to a meeting of white nationalists in Queens, “was meant to be just a sweet and small six-week thing.” Trust us, if you’re a New Yorker (or you’ve ever been a New Yorker), you’ll laugh—a lot. (Sarah Jessica Parker is a fan.) “I like jokes and shows that are a little more ‘high-risk’ than the average standup thing,” Edelman says.

63 SPRING 2022

Chasten Harmon ACTOR

In the big new musical Mr. Saturday Night, Harmon stars as Annie Wells, agent to Buddy Young Jr., an old-school comedian trying to make a comeback. Billy Crystal played Buddy in the 1992 movie of the same name (his directorial debut), and he’s now playing the role onstage opposite Harmon at the Nederlander Theatre. What has Harmon already learned from the comic master? “Know yourself. Stay true to yourself. Believe in yourself,” says Harmon. “You don’t get a career like Billy has by taking whatever you can get. You get it by being intentional with every single thing you say yes to.”

A CLOSER LOOK

MOVING Mountains

Ski resorts are no longer just for skiing, of course. For destinations across the country, the off-season is looking a lot more full-on BY ALYSSA GIACOBBE

M ABOVE: In Snowmass, Colorado, snow is almost always part of the spring adventure

y husband and I had hiked Stowe’s Mount Mansfield at least a half dozen times before we decided, last spring, to hire a guide to take us up during a long weekend’s stay at The Lodge at Spruce Peak. It wasn’t that we needed to know how, or even where, to walk, of course. We’d been hiking together throughout New England and beyond since we met, and Bob prides himself on being great with a map. But after a long year or more of restricted living that included limiting our travel to places we could drive to and too-few interactions with people outside of our household, there was something undeniably appealing about the potential of seeing something new—or, even, seeing something we’d seen plenty of times before, but through someone else’s eyes. The day turned out even better than we expected: Guide Dylan Griffin took Bob and I through a section of the Long Trail we’d never even seen on a map, and along the way pointed out flora and fauna we’d never noticed before. The hotel had set up a picnic lunch at the top, where we enjoyed giant sandwiches and local craft beer along with our views—a far more luxurious trail lunch than our usual of squished Larabars and water. It was exactly the kind of mini-adventure we’d been after.

Unreliable winter conditions and an uptick in domestic travel over the last few years have resulted in an off-season boom for ski resorts across the country. In Breckenridge, Colorado, off-season visits have gotten so popular that Gravity Haus, the town’s popular hotel and social club, expanded the formerly members-only upscale gear rental club Haus Quiver to accommodate visiting guests coming to explore some of the Rockies’ most glorious months, where the winterscapes shift to include (thawed) alpine lakes and fields of wildf lowers. In addition to hiking, biking and paddle boarding—guided or on your own—there’s fly fishing, gemstone panning (keep what you find!) and—my unexpected favorite, on a recent visit—summer dog sledding, a two-mile circuit through the scenic Swan River Valley that helps keep the dogs in shape for the winter season. Last summer, the resort launched Epic Discovery, a blitz of all-level activities for families, plus on-mountain dining. In my experience at least, that bottle of wine you order at lunch will be a far safer bet when you’re riding the lift, not your skis, back down.

SPRING 2022

ABOVE FROM LEFT:

There’s plenty of warm weather adventure to be had in Stowe; springtime is prime time for hiking in Breckenridge, Colorado

77

In the past, many people with experience in outdoor adventure may have been inclined to forgo a guide in favor of DIY exploration. But there’s no doubt that the right guide can enhance your experience in myriad ways, arranging a 15-minute jaunt or a fullday adventure and tailoring it on the f ly in response to how you’re doing or what you are capable of. Breckenridge is also home to some of the country’s best whitewater rafting down the Blue River and, just slightly farther afield, the Arkansas River, which passes through the iconic Browns Canyon National Monument. On my first-ever rafting trip, our guide gave me the encouragement and confidence I needed to push myself just a bit outside of my comfort zone—paddling along instead of simply sitting and holding on for dear life, as I was inclined to do. I suspect I had a much better time because of it. “When you hire a guide, you are getting more than a robot that can take you up pitches and mountains,” says Cody Bradford, a rock climbing guide who leads trips in Las Vegas, Joshua Tree National Park, Moab and western North Carolina, among others,

DUJOUR.COM

largely through the travel app 57hours. “You are hiring someone who has thought through the ‘whys’ of techniques and mountain movement, someone who uses their years’ worth of technical abilities to give you an intimate learning experience. Hiring a guide is also a way to enter an unknown area and only have to think about the climbing or hiking at hand. This completely frees you up to focus on whatever skill you have come to develop or experience you have come to have.” In Stowe, The Lodge has increased guided services over the last few seasons in response to high guest demand. On-mountain, there’s now full- and half-day spring, summer, and fall offerings for hiking, mountain biking and climbing at a variety of experience levels, as well as kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding. You can hike, bike or float in pursuit of food—maple creemees, local craft cider—or wildlife, like otters, deer and the occasional moose. This season, until the last snow melts (which can be as late as June), The Lodge is introducing the Sugar on Snow tour, a moderate hike along the pretty Mill Trail that ends with the local tradition of “sugar on snow,” drizzling hot maple syrup over packed snow to create a taffy-like candy. Recently, Bob and I put our good guide luck to the test in Snowmass, part of the Aspen/Snowmass complex, nine miles from Aspen proper. While Aspen may still be best considered for its snow-season debauchery, it is, in fact, one of the most wellrounded all-season destinations for both diehard outdoor enthusiasts and those who adventure mainly for the celebratory cocktail or three after. From our home base at Limelight Snowmass, we explored just a small part of the area’s 2.8 million acres of wilderness, including an epic climb over the Elk Mountains (also available to see by hot air balloon—next time, we decided), and a three-hour guided mountain bike ride in and out of aspen groves. Later, we found the après scene as festive as it always is during ski season, and just as satisfying. We might not have spent the day braving the elements in quite the same way we had on previous winter visits, but we’d had more than a day’s worth of adventure all the same. ■

SIENNA MILLER

IS READY FOR YET ANOTHER BREAKOUT MOMENT—THIS TIME IN NETFLIX’S PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL

82 SPRING 2022

VER THE LAST two decades, the actress and perpetual It girl Sienna Miller has appeared on 12 international covers of Vogue. She’s been written about in countless transatlantic gossip columns. She became tabloid fodder when she began dating Jude Law, whom she met in 2003 on the set of Alfie, which featured her in her first major role. And while they split just a couple of years later, the guy might have gone, but Miller’s spotlight never dimmed. The point is: Miller knows a thing or two about making news. “I mean, who doesn’t like a scandal?” she asks. A in’t that the truth? Today, Miller is actually talking about Anatomy of a Scandal, the new six-part series on Netflix that debuted this spring. Based on the 2018 novel by Sarah Vaughan, Miller stars as Sophie Whitehouse, a mother of two and doting, unflinchingly loyal wife whose husband (Rupert Friend), a government minister, is suddenly accused of sexual assault. A trial ensues—Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) is the tough-as-nails prosecuting attorney—and Miller’s character gets way more than she bargained for. “Scandals,” says Miller. “ They’re just compelling and propulsive.” Especially when they’re adapted for the screen by David E. Kelley. “I loved Big Little Lies; I loved The Undoing,” says Miller of two of Kelley’s recent blockbuster event series, both of which appeared on HBO. “I binged them, and I don’t watch an awful lot of television. So that was a huge pull.” Born in New York but raised in the U.K., Miller, now 40, returned to London to shoot this particular Scandal in late 2020, at the height of the pandemic. It was a particularly isolating time for everyone, Miller explains, “and it felt like a really nice opportunity to move back to England for a year and be near family. To sort of reset. It was really a no-brainer on all sorts of levels.”

“It was pretty dark stuff we were dealing with,” says S.J. Clarkson, who directed all six episodes. “What I love about Sienna is her sharp wit. She’s fucking funny. We share the same sense of humor, which allowed us to lean into the darker and less comfortable places without going down a rabbit hole.” A dds her co-star Friend, “Time after time, take after take, through exhaustion and God knows what level of personal strife she may have been going through, she consistently gave of herself, not only to me, but to the entire cast and crew. She is a true leading lady in every sense.” It also happens that Miller saw a bit of herself in the Oxfordeducated Sophie. The character lives a somewhat charmed if isolated life in a gorgeous Mayfair townhouse, with what seems to be the perfect husband and two young children attending private school. “I related to this idea of privilege,” Miller says of the milieu in which Anatomy of a Scandal takes place. “Probably because I had a kind of privileged upbringing.” It all made her wonder, “What is that leg up in life and how does that lead you to the places you go?” Miller and her older sister, Savannah, now a successful fashion designer, attended the posh girls’ boarding school Heathfield in Ascot, Berkshire, an hour away from their mother’s home in the tony Parsons Green neighborhood of London. Miller’s mother, Josephine, was a South African model. Her father, Edwin, is an American banker-turned-Chinese art dealer. They divorced when both girls were young. After high school, Miller modeled and then studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York City. Dating and nearly marrying Jude Law in the early aughts, during and after Alfie, catapulted her to stratospheric levels of attention. “I obviously have a lot of experience of kind of becoming wellknown at a time when the tabloids really had all the power and the individual had very little. Anybody could really write anything,” Miller explains of her early and continuous attendance in the public eye. She was just 21. “It was a real frenzy,” she says. “A fever pitch of craziness.” Since then, Miller adds, “I’ve dealt w ith ver y public heartbreak.” Years after breaking it off with Law, she was engaged to actor Tom Sturridge, w ith whom she has 10-year-old daughter Marlowe. More recently, she almost said “I do” to art world scion Lucas Zwirner. “I was never somebody who dreamt of getting married. I’ve been engaged a few times, but I’ve never been married,” she says of those three serious relationships. “It’s better than three divorces, I think.” Like Zwirner, her new beau, 25-year-old English model and actor Oli Green, comes from art world stock. They recently walked the red carpet together at an Academy Awards party. “I’m not a dater,” Miller attests. “I’ve never been one. Once I’m in, I’m in. And I’m also quite shy. My life has sort of unfolded in a different way and I’m fine with it. My life was never going to be orthodox.”

I’VE DEALT WITH VERY PUBLIC HEARTBREAK. —SIENNA MILLER

Besides those very public relationships, much of the media attention around Miller has centered around her personal style, an effortless bohemian chic. Her early days as a kind of updated Carnaby Girl likely ushered in an age of street-style influencers. Of course, celebrities are now much more in control of their image thanks to Instagram and TikTok, but Miller stays away from that. “I feel like it would give me anxiety to really be active on social media,” she says. “I don’t even have the social media apps on my phone. I think in order to be really successful, you have to be very open about your life and your home and what you’re doing. And that doesn’t sit well with me. I need to separate my work and my home persona.” Miller describes Sturridge as a “great father” and her “best friend.” Six years ago, when Sturridge was working on Broadway, Miller decided to put down roots in New York City so they could coparent Marlowe. “I always dreamt about having a place in New York,” she explains. “In London, I felt like everyone had seen my dirty laundry. I love how anonymous New York is. It’s the most exciting city on earth. I love going to SNL on a Saturday. I find it galvanizing as an energy.” Over the past decade, New York has also accepted her as an actress on Broadway in After Miss Julie and Cabaret, and has kept her in a circle of prestige cable roles (for instance, as Elizabeth Ailes in Showtime’s The Loudest Voice) and front and center with A-list directors like Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher), James Gray (The Lost City of Z) and Clint Eastwood (American Sniper). “I love that I’ve had the opportunity to carve out a proper story with a trajectory and a character that was fully formed,” Miller says of her varied projects, especially the meatier ones that have come up more recently. “So, yeah—more of those always, but I’ll also make the tea on a Clint Eastwood set just to be there.” In the early years of Miller’s career, “I didn’t strategize in a way that I could have done,” she says. “It was hard for people to see me as other than someone fashionable or somebody’s girlfriend or somebody slightly chaotic. I wish I’d had a movie out before I became famous.” Though she’s piqued by looking back at her so-called past lives, she’s very happy she’s had several opportunities to reinvent herself. “It was a blessing post-motherhood to have that resurgence of a career that had slightly gone awry,” Miller explains. “I’m playing a long game and just trying to be good in things. I want to be doing this when I’m 80. Hopefully, when I’m an old lady and I look back at the choices I made, they’ll make sense. It’ll be a good meaty body of work.” Figuring out that life is more of a “long game” gives her some helpful perspective on where she is now. “I just don’t really care anymore, which is so relieving,” Miller says with a laugh and a sigh. “A, I’m still alive. B, I’m still working and C, I’m incredibly happy in my personal life. So, yeah, things are pretty great, honestly.” ■

ELLPORT VILLAGE IS A QUAINT HAMLET ON LONG ISLAND’S Great South Bay, a laid-back beach community with a lot of charm and casual elegance. Historic architecture, a private beach and a charming Main Street have attracted low-key creatives to the area for decades. Michael Tomei of Michael Vincent Design, who spends summers in Bellport, has made a name for himself meticulously renovating old homes in the area. In 2021, in close partnership with the local Historic District Preservation Committee, Tomei purchased a 19th-century shingle-style cottage on Brewster Lane and brought it back to life through a thoughtful restoration. “This charming cottage was built in 1858 by one of the original founding families of Bellport Village,” explains Tomei. “It was a carriage house sectioned off from the original estate. The intention was to maintain the original character and footprint of the original structure. The cottage had a unique rambling quality that needed to be preserved, and the home needed to be appropriate for this casual beach town.”

The kitchen features cabinets painted in Farrow & Ball Wimborne White to enhance the tones of the Italian calacatta viola marble countertop. Waterworks brass hardware adds a touch of elegance.

The first step for Tomei was to excavate the basement while salvaging wood, brick and cobblestones, which were then used throughout the property. Another challenge was to open up the front hall to create a gracious entrance. “The original entrance was cramped, with a very steep staircase and narrow hall,” says Tomei. “The front staircase had to be relocated to the heart of the home, connecting the kitchen to the second floor.” Another favorite addition is the sunroom with 180-degree views and expansive windows. “It makes you feel as though you’re living in nature,” says Tomei. “During the summer months, the space opens up seamlessly to the outdoor deck, perfect for entertaining weekend guests.” A light, coastal color palette connects the interior to the water nearby. Neutral tones were used throughout, except for in the dining room, where Tomei chose a blue-green shade for an evening entertaining mood. “We took an old English approach to the trim—matching the walls, but with a slight change to the finish to create a monochromatic look,” says Tomei. In order to honor the house’s bones and location, the design team took great care to source antiques which were then refinished or reupholstered. “We worked with local auction houses as well as local craftsmen to create special pieces throughout,” he says. “Each bathroom was outfitted with Victorian washstands converted into sink vanities to ensure correct historical references in a modern space.” The painstaking restoration stayed true to the cottage’s heritage while modernizing and updating the spaces for modern living. “Bellport Village has a laid-back, approachable vibe, which was key to every detail—from the layout to the finishes,” says Tomei. ■

How a STRUGGLING OPERA SINGER transferred her creative vision from the stage to terra firma and built a BOTANICAL WONDERLAND BY

CHRISTOPHER WYRICK

S AN OPERA SINGER, GANNA WALSKA

DUJOUR.COM 113 SPRING 2022

was probably best known for being a flop. During one memorable performance in Havana, the Polish-born beauty was reportedly pelted with rotting vegetables, and upon the occasion of her lead in a 1925 Puccini production in Nice, the New York Times headlined a story “Ganna Walska Fails as Butterfly.” But while the erstwhile songbird made a name for herself employing unorthodox methods to improve her voice—seeking the counsel of yogis, therapists and mystics—the most enduring of Walska’s endeavors has nothing to do with singing. Just outside Santa Barbara, California, on a 37-acre plot Walska acquired in 1941, sits Lotusland, an encyclopedic botanical garden that plays host to more than 3,000 species of rare plants, as well as the only remaining post–World War II Japanese garden on the central California coast that’s open to the public. It’s a long-standing destination for international researchers, garden enthusiasts and artists, and is the legacy that Walska spent the last four decades of her life building. She originally purchased the land at the suggestion of her sixth and final husband, the yogi Theos Bernard, for the purpose of creating a Tibetan-themed retreat. Instead, Walska dedicated herself to creating wildly conceptual and excitingly unconventional gardens. She planted based on form or color as opposed to a more traditional approach. The results are a wondrous, Seussian experience of flora; a prime example is the Blue Garden, featuring plant species from Chile (wine palms), Australia (bunya-bunya and hoop pine) and Morocco (Atlas cedar). Not only is every living thing on the grounds exceptional in its own right, but Walska lined the walkways with blue glass discarded from the nearby Arrowhead Spring Water bottling plant with an eye to making sure the site’s non-living elements were equally beautiful. Elsewhere, you’ll find the aforementioned Japanese garden, a topiary plot and areas dedicated to ferns, cacti, bromeliads, succulents and lotus blooms. Walska auctioned off nearly a million dollars’ worth of jewels just to get her hands on what became a grove of rare cycads. Walking the property is a trip around the globe, with a symphony of exotic species complementing quiet trails through shaded expanses of fern and oak. Today, the gardens at Lotusland reflect Walska’s persistent curiosity, resisting conventional classification with an eclectic, postmodern sensibility that makes a visit more akin to a gallery jaunt than a horticultural expedition. Today, the link between Lotusland and the arts is even more concrete. A new residency program is opening up the garden to great creative minds, and it’s already bearing fruit. The first project features Los Angeles artist Zoe Crosher, whose work has been exhibited at MoMA and LACMA. She has selected plants from the grounds to bronze, turning the ephemeral—sometimes even endangered—into something that will endure. Upon first visiting the gardens, Crosher says, “I was blown away by the gardens and even more with the story of Madame Walska. She was so fabulous and so sexy!” Much of Crosher’s work deals with the idea of disappearance, and several of her recent bodies of plant-based works have brought awareness to the effects of climate change. “I love the idea that I am bronzing these last-hoorah blossoms on these disappearing plants in this disappearing garden,” she says. It’s only appropriate, considering that Lotusland’s most inspiring bloom, Walska herself, died on the grounds in 1984. Luckily, her curious, singular spirit lives on in the garden, which expresses her voice in a way that singing never could. ■

The duo behind the Suite Reyad salon in Midtown Manhattan, known for their meticulously applied balayage highlights, have colored the hair of Nina Garcia and model Imaan Hammam. “Everyone wants comfort, but most importantly, clients like intimacy,” explains Fritas. “Especially when you spend a few hours having your hair done.” Fritas, who has worked for many big salons, wanted to move away from the stark, anonymous salons of yore with many chairs and too many

The couple decided to open a permanent location in Aspen after hosting two successful pop-ups at the St. Regis last year. “We love servicing a new market while also getting to see a lot of our New York City clients on vacation,” says Williard Fritas, who specializes in balayage. “The St. Regis Aspen Resort is such a welcoming, beautiful hotel.” So what are the women of Aspen looking for, stylistically? “A natural look, as a lot of them are very active,” says Williard Fritas. “We also are big on maintaining the health of hair, so we offer deep conditioning treatments and a modern way of styling and blowing out the hair that does not promote damage. Over the years, Bochner has questioned the definition of a drawing, and through various iterations has explored ideas like language, numbers, visual perception, seriality and the blurring of word and picture through his drawings. This exhibit will showcase a range of interpretative drawings, including traditional drawings from ink, pencil and charcoal alongside mixed media pieces made from burnt matchsticks on paper, oil paint on newspaper and wall drawings in powder pigment. These works further cement the idea that drawing, by definition, might not be so black-and-white. artic.edu

The Omakase Room at Sushi-san is a new 10-seat omakase experience where master sushi chef Kaze Chan will showcase his inventive Japanese cuisine through an 18-course menu that will include influences from his roots in Vietnam, China and Japan. Products will be impeccably sourced from around the world; the chef’s relationship with the Yamasaki family at the Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo provides the restaurant with the freshest seafood available, with a focus on wild, line-caught fish. The design of the space is reminiscent of a modern Japanese loft, where you will feel like you have been invited to a dinner party at chef Chan’s home. Once seated, guests will be encouraged to interact with the chefs at work while they dine; the chefs will have raised custom Hinoki cypress cutting boards so chefs and guests are at eye level with each other. The team worked with local ceramicists and stonemasons to create serving pieces, including a custom-made lazy susan at each seat. Sake, wine, Japanese whiskey and cocktails crafted with hand-chipped ice are also on offer. theomakaseroom.com

HOOK, LINE AND SINKER Norwegian chef Christopher Haatuft is no stranger to making waves in the global culinary world. Haatuft, known as the Punk-Chef Godfather of Neo-Fjordic cuisine, may have ditched his mohawk in Norway, but his innovative and boundarypushing twists on Nordic cuisine continue to bring him success in Houston. Haatuft has worked in the kitchens at high-end farm-to-table restaurants around the world such as Blue Hill at Stone Barns and three-Michelin-starred Per Se in New York, and runs his own restaurant, Lysverket, in Norway. Haatuft and James Beard Award winner Paul Qui have teamed up to create a sustainable seafood market and restaurant, Golfstrømmen, in Qui’s food hall at Post Houston, an eclectic new space inside Houston’s historic Barbara Jordan Post Office. “Although it’s impossible in today’s world for a restaurant to be fully sustainable, I have always tried to make my restaurants back in Norway as sustainable as possible. I’m excited to bring sustainably sourced seafood to Houston and work with local seafood suppliers to increase sustainability efforts in the region,” Haatuft says. Standout menu items include gulf-caught red fish ceviche with tart bergen leche and dressed with dill oil, apples and celery. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s raw bar menu includes items like gulf- and Maine-sourced oysters, salmon tartare, golden kaluga caviar and gulf stone crab claws. Major Food Group co-founders Mario Carbone, Jeff Zalaznick and Rich Torrisi have partnered with HaSalon founder Eyal Shani to open a Miami Beach outpost of his renowned Israeli restaurant HaSalon in the former home of China Grill. “HaSalon is simply legendary. We fell in love with the concept years ago, in part because MFG also builds restaurants that deliver excellent hospitality, unmatched food and a nightly celebration. Now, we finally get to do it together. The restaurant is a one-of-kind concept born in Israel but made for Miami,” says Zalaznick. The address is a fitting showcase for the theatrics and widely acclaimed Israeli cuisine that have come to define the HaSalon brand at its outposts in Tel Aviv, New York City and Ibiza. “Everyone who comes to HaSalon for the first time tells me that they’ve never had an experience like it,” says Shani, the chef, MasterChef judge and restaurateur. “The mood gets more and more energetic and convivial as the night goes on and guests get comfortable, but one thing never changes: the line of cooks working very quietly, very consciously, on their food.” hasalonmiami.com Eden Roc Miami Beach, the celebrated Morris Lapidus–designed oceanfront resort, has opened its newest restaurant, Ocean Social. With unparalleled panoramic ocean views, the restaurant captures a coastal effervescence while offering visitors an upscale setting for meals and cocktails. Executive chef Darren Anklam curated the menu with a selection of relaxed and approachable yet one-ofa-kind dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. “With an abundance of fresh seafood and excellent produce, I wanted to make sure they were the star ingredients of the menu,” says Anklam. Whether you head to Ocean Social for a sunset aperitivo or a leisurely lunch, you will undoubtedly enjoy a warm and inviting Miami experience. edenrochotelmiami.com

in Brooklyn this April

James McAvoy’s Cyrano has arrived in Brooklyn

Surely you know Cyrano de Bergerac. You’ve probably seen it played out dozens of times. Maybe on stage, maybe in the movies, maybe even in your own unrequited love life. With Peter Dinklage in Cyrano earlier this year. Or Steve Martin in Roxanne. Or Janeane Garofolo in The Truth About Cats & Dogs. But we suggest you give Cyrano another shot, because you likely won’t see one as electric as James McAvoy’s. This production of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring the Scottish actor and directed by Jamie Lloyd from a new translation by Martin Crimp, takes its cues from the world of slam and spoken word poetry. It’s fresh, it’s original. Expect lots of goosebumps at its American premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, running for only six weeks beginning April 5. bam.org

ROOM REQUEST Surrounded by sun-soaked beaches, vibrant entertainment and endless shopping, it is safe to say that the new Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Fort Lauderdale is in good company. The recently opened 189-room hotel was dreamed up by Fort Hospitality, led by developer Nadim Ashi, to create a beachfront oasis in South Florida rooted in style and luxury. “Each of South Florida’s coastal communities has its own unique charm. From beach to city, Fort Lauderdale has a youthful and vibrant spirit, and we are channeling that energy, along with yacht club–style traditions, into our team and all the experiences we are creating for our guests,” says General Manager Mazen Saleh, who was most recently resort manager at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach. Drawing inspiration from its coastal environment, award-winning Miami-based architect Kobi Karp designed the building’s curved silhouette in homage to the sleek lines of a luxury yacht. With contemporary lines and crisp white materials, the building itself is a vision that beautifully complements its city. Renowned London-based interior designer Tara Bernerd & Partners curated the hotel’s rooms, suites and public spaces with an effortless marriage of French Riviera luxury and mid-century modern design. Crown ROYAL BY EDWARD ESPITIA

I

n her Platinum Jubilee message this February, Queen Elizabeth II stated that it was her “sincere wish” for Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, to be styled as Queen Consort when the time comes for Charles to take the throne. With Camilla’s title settled, the ever-important sartorial questions are looming. The five previous Queen Consorts have had their coronation crowns designed especially for them, the last being Queen Elizabeth’s mother. She wore what has come to be known as “The Queen Mother’s Crown” to the coronation of her husband, King George VI, in 1937. Gone are the days of extreme excess for the Windsor family, so Camilla is likely to wear The Queen Mother’s Crown in lieu of a custom crown commission. The Queen Mother’s Crown was designed in 1937 by Garrard & Co, the official crown jeweler at the time. It was created in platinum and set with 2,800 diamonds, many of which came from Queen Victoria’s Regal Circlet tiara. The four tapering arches were designed to be removable. When in place on the crown, they are surmounted by a pavé-set monde containing a replica of the 22.48karat Lahore Diamond, presented to Queen Victoria in 1851. The front cross holds one of the most (in)famous diamonds in the world, the Koh-i-Noor (Mountain of Light), set into a removable platinum mount. The 105.6-karat stone is believed to have been mined in India as early as the 12th century. After changing hands several times, often as the spoils of war, the diamond was

eventually acquired by Queen Victoria in 1850. She had concerns about wearing the diamond, and wrote to her daughter, “No one feels more strongly than I do about India or how much I opposed our taking those countries and I think no more will be taken, for it is very wrong and no advantage to us….You know also how I dislike wearing the Koh-i-Noor.” Nevertheless, Victoria had the diamond cut to better highlight its brilliance and wore it as a brooch, as seen in her 1856 portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. It was believed to bestow bad luck to any male wearer, so it was passed on to Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary and then finally set into the Queen Mother’s Crown. The Duchess of Cornwall often sports jewels once worn by the Queen Mother, including the Delhi Durbar and Greville tiaras. It would be quite fitting for her to don the legendary crown in the years to come.
