ince its opening in 1931, the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue has been an iconic and glamorous symbol of New York luxury. The renovation of this landmark building by architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will convert the exclusive all-suites Towers section of the hotel into a collection of contemporary residences. With interiors and amenities designed by Paris-based designer Jean-Louis Deniot, these 375 apartments will boast unsurpassed luxury and service. The property features 50,000 square feet of private amenities, like a private porte cochère featuring dramatic double-height vaulted ceilings with 24-hour valet service and two gracious entry lobbies, ensuring you’ll want for nothing. “The Waldorf Astoria has a forever lavish aura,” says Deniot. “The interiors will ref lect the magnificence of the past mixed with today’s great sense of energy. They will be grand and playful, all highly inviting, with many elements of surprise and excitement.” Residences range from spacious studios to lavish four-bedrooms and stunning penthouses—several with expansive private outdoor space.

e are so fortunate to have produced several original, safe and socially distanced photo shoots for this issue. Our cover star is Emmy Award–w inning actress Sarah Paulson, photographed by Max Abadian at a West Hollywood estate. Paulson is hot off starring in the original Netflix series Ratched and the film Run, now streaming on Hulu. While Paulson has been on our radar for years, these projects have propelled her to household name status: 48 million people watched Ratched during its first month of release, and Run became Hulu’s most-watched feature title ever during its opening weekend. Her frequent collaborators and friends, stylist Karla Welch and makeup artist Adam Breuchaud, were luckily in town, so we were able to enlist an A-team to help Paulson shine. Across the country in New York City, musician and actress Kat Graham was game for an intimate shoot, photographed by Tiffany Dawn Nicholson, at one of the new residences at The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria. We are so fortunate to have been able to produce these in-person shoots and collaborate with many of our favorite creatives like photographers Douglas Friedman, Björn Wallander, Jeffrey Westbrook and Lucas Zarebinski. Iconic musicians like Dolly Parton and the late John Lennon are explored in two new book excerpts, and we talked with talents like ballet dancer Misty Copeland and actor Colman Domingo about their newest roles. We hope you’re able to spend time with the issue in good health, comfortable clothes and a cozy nook of your home—maybe in the bath while enjoying one of this season’s chic new soaks (see page 34).

Ocean Plastic Timepiece, $995, TOM FORD, tomford.com

WINTER 2020

Tom Ford has released the Ocean Plastic Timepiece, the first luxury watch made from 100 percent ocean plastic. The black strap is hand-braided of found ocean plastic and features a stainless steel buckle plated in DLC, and the matte black dial features white Super-LumiNova-painted numerals. Each timepiece permanently removes the equivalent of 35 bottles of plastic waste from the ocean, in addition to being housed in completely recyclable packaging. “It is incredibly appealing to know that you are not only wearing a high-quality product, but by simply owning the product, you are also taking direct action to improve the planet.” says Ford. tomford.com

SEA NO EVIL

A group of French fashion industry veterans took their time in pandemic lockdown to pursue their dream of creating luxury, and the result is sustainable knitwear brand Paradis Perdus. “We’ve done a lot of research into sustainability and the rampant greenwashing in our industry,” says co-founder and designer Thomas Poli. “By sourcing the highest-quality fibers, working with the right partners and educating our customers, we want to show that it is possible to create something new, express our voice and build a brand while being extremely respectful of the Earth.” Each piece in the collection has been created using 100 percent recycled cashmere, wool or cotton to attain the lowest possible impact on the planet. French for “lost paradise,” Paradis Perdus revives the classic and merges it with the future, creating a contemporary wardrobe of unisex pieces. The debut collection features 17 sweaters in graphic Aztec patterns and thick stripes.

The first African American female principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland, joins Breitling’s Spotlight Squad

isty Copeland made history as the first African American female dancer in the history of the American Ballet Theatre. Now, Copeland has another dance partner. This month, she joined actresses Charlize Theron and Yao Chen in Breitling’s “Spotlight Squad” trio as an ambassador for the luxury watch brand’s first versatile all-purpose watches for women, the Chronomat 36 and 32. “I like to bring ballet with me on these partnerships,” Copeland tells DuJour. “I have a clear message and Breitling is aligned with that. It’s hard to find brands who are willing to accept you for you.” This partnership will help shine a spotlight (pun intended) on philanthropy, which is close to Copeland’s heart. “Everything that I do, they’ve stood behind, and that is so valuable for me,” says Copeland. “To be recognized and be seen means everything. To have their support says everything about them.” Copeland is very particular about the brands she partners with. “[Breitling] has this niche way of presenting themselves but at the same time appealing to so many people,” she explains. “Their product looks so rich but can be dressed up or dressed down.”

Not having a lot of structure and stability growing up, time was always something I could control. —MISTY COPELAND

The Missouri native was one of six children born to a single mother who moved the family to California at a young age and raised them in a motel. When she was 13, via a local Boys and Girls Club, Copeland was introduced to a dance teacher who discovered her natural talent and encouraged her to pursue formal ballet training. She knows firsthand how the arts can add purpose to young children’s lives. As an ambassador for MindLeaps, a NGO working in East and West Africa to empower vulnerable youth through a dance-based program, Copeland has devoted much of her time to mentoring young girls and boys. “Being homeless for a lot of my childhood and not really thriving until the arts came into

my life, I saw myself in these students,” she says. “MindLeaps invites kids in from off the streets and introduces them to music and dance. That’s how you change communities.” Breitling CEO Georges Kern was impressed with Copeland’s humanitarian and mentoring work, as well. “Misty is, of course, one of the world’s greatest dancers, but she’s also an amazing role model,” says Kern. “She’s a great example of a Breitling Squad member: She has unmatched achievements in her professional life but is also committed to her humanitarian work.” The 38-year-old dancer, author and philanthropist lives with her husband, lawyer Olu Evans, on the Upper West Side near the Metropolitan Opera House, where she is eager to step on stage again soon. Until then, she’ll be taking part in virtual dance presentations with her fellow dancers and showing off her new favorite watch: the 18-karat red gold and stainless steel 36mm Chronomat. “I like the feel of a men’s-size watch and really like that it can be dressed up or down. I like it with jeans and a white T-shirt but could also see it with a leather jacket and tulle dress and heels,” says Copeland. “As much as I’m a ballerina, I love that unisex feel with the things that I wear.” Time has always been on her side, so she’s learned to be patient. “Not having a lot of structure and stability growing up, time was always something I could control. I was always an hour early to school with my little watch on,” says Copeland. “It means so much in my career, and I always craved being a part of the ballet because it was everything that I didn’t have.” Well, now, she has it all. ■

apitalizing on its signature 1980s design, Breitling’s iconic Chronomat timepiece has been redesigned with a modern update this year and reintroduced as the first-ever Chronomat for women. “It is sporty yet elegant and, while its roots are in the 1980s, this timepiece is dedicated to innovative women of today,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “The Chronomat influenced the industry for many years, and its name and some of the design elements are absolutely iconic.” Offered in a variety of steel and 18-karat red gold cases with diamond-set bezels and indexes and special lacquered dials, the watches are available in two sizes: 32mm and 36mm. Breitling has reinvented

a symbol of style with the Chronomat, executing the perfect blend of masculine and feminine design with traditional luxury. “For today’s woman, a watch needs to be comfortable, durable and versatile,” says Kern. “They are looking for a watch that accompanies their active lifestyle, a watch they can wear for any occasion, from business meetings to the beach.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Jen Atkin

The hairstylist and haircare entrepreneur takes us through a jam-packed day in her shoes

J

en Atkin may have become famous for her deft use of social media and her working relationship with the Kardashian-Jenners, but after years of working in hair, she was a true product expert. “I got to know almost every product, every brand out there,” says the hairstylist and entrepreneur. “I would walk down the aisle at Sephora and see so many different options to the point of overwhelm. I wanted to create a super-curated line of products that were easy to interpret and use for people who weren’t necessarily hair experts.” Ouai was born in 2016 as a paraben-, phthalate- and sulfate-free haircare line featuring shampoo, conditioner and styling products—and the line has since grown to include body products. Because of Atkin’s massive personal social media following (3.6 million Instagram followers and counting), Ouai made a splash in the market and quickly garnered its own social media following, allowing the brand to tap into that audience. “We have always prioritized the feedback from our community since Day 1 and so often will launch a product based on what it is that they want,” she explains. “Having a following allowed us to crowdsource the products people wanted.” Simplifying haircare was paramount for the hairstylist who got her start in the industry at age 20 working for John Galliano at Dior. After that, she worked for hairstylist Andy LeCompte, who took her on tour with Madonna for eight months. An introduction to the jeweler Lorraine Schwartz led Atkin to meeting the Kardashian-Jenner family—a friendship that has since opened a lot of doors—and it steamrolled from there. She’s styled hair for every member of the Kardashian-Jenner family, in addition to Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Baldwin Bieber, Chrissy Teigen and Bella Hadid.

Things are not as hectic now and I don’t travel for work as much as I used to. I have gotten a lot of perspective from slowing down this year. —JEN ATKIN

And if she wasn’t busy enough, she decided to pen a memoirmeets-business book about her journey; Blowing My Way to the Top (Harper Wave) is out now. “I wanted to offer insight into the values that allowed me to thrive in the modern digital landscape,” Atkin explains. “I came up in a truly male-dominated industry and I wanted to speak frankly about the challenges I’ve faced and provide crucial advice for other women about running a business, being a feminist and learning to navigate the work and life issues that impact women the most.” So how have COVID-19 restrictions changed the way the peripatetic 40-year-old does business in Los Angeles? “Things are not as hectic now and I don’t travel for work as much as I used to,” she says. “My husband [photographer Mike Rosenthal] and I have gotten a lot of perspective from slowing down this year, and we don’t miss the treadmill we were constantly on.” Here’s how Atkin spends a typical day.

ew York City integrative medicine specialist Dr. Richard Firshein has been practicing precision-based medicine for decades, in which everything—from testing to long-term longevity plans—is customized. At his namesake practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the Firshein Center, Dr. Firshein offers a 360-degree approach to personalized health care by looking at a patient’s gut biome, DNA, nutritional vitamin levels, hormones, allergies and toxins they may have been exposed to. An early pioneer in the field of integrative and functional medicine, Dr. Firshein has penned two books on the topic (Nutraceutical Revolution and The Vitamin Prescription (for Life)) and treated patients like U2’s Larry Mullen Jr. and Susan Rockefeller. “I was always a believer in natural approaches to health care,” says Dr. Firshein. “We simply prescribe too many medications and perhaps now too many supplements for our own good.” Since no two patients are the same, Dr. Firshein’s goal is to use his unique system of healing to prescribe the right cocktail of supplements to maximize each individual’s optimal health. To that end, Precise Elements by Dr. Firshein was born. “You are the only person that matters when it comes to your health,” he explains. “And, for me, this is the holy grail of supplementation: one pill that’s customized to your unique needs.” For those who don’t like swallowing pills, you can even get the formula in powder form instead. Dr. Firshein cites many issues with the way we currently take supplements. “Let’s start with one-size-fits-all multivitamins,” he says. “They may be providing some benefit, but they often have so many ingredients that overlap that it’s both wasteful and potentially harmful—even creating adverse effects, including increased risks for cancer.” For example, a 35-year-old man with asthma needs a different supplement than a 70-year-old woman with diabetes. “That seems obvious, but no one has been able to address that yet,” he explains. “In many cases, I’m incorporating metabolic, nutritional and DNA testing into these formulations, creating the most precise nutritional supplement formulation possible with no filler.” Dr. Firshein’s goal is to consolidate all of the supplements a patient might need into fewer than five pills daily that are tailored to your needs and packaged in a sustainable, refillable bottle. “A color-coding system on our bottles gives consumers a quick glimpse of what their supplements are being used for, too,” says Dr. Firshein. “So, for example, a bottle with a green stripe on the label will help consumers know that this is for supporting heart and lung health.” For now, this unique service is offered exclusively through consultation via an in-person or telemedicine appointment at the Firshein Center. “As you consider each person’s family history, genetic predispositions, allergies, deficiencies and medications, you start to get a much different picture in terms of need and ultimately the ability to create a specialized supplement regimen that’s right for them.” firsheincenter.com ■

aving grown up in Switzerland and traveled Europe as a model for many years, Lisa Parigi knows the beauty and fashion industries intimately. After pursuing a professional career as an executive for several different Fortune 500 software and information technology companies, the longtime girlfriend of Lionel Richie launched her digital lifestyle brand Dream.Design.Discover to offer tips and inspiration for entertaining and chic home décor. Around the same time, she developed a line of luxury candles. With fragrances inspired by her favorite destinations, including St. Tropez, the Swiss Alps, Manhattan and Beverly Hills, these hand-poured candles are accented with 24-karat gold. “I always carry the candles with me when I travel to have the scent of something familiar,” she says. Parigi launched vegan, sulfate-free and paraben-free product line Glow Up Beauty to corner the skincare and self-care market. “I poured my love into producing natural and effective products for anyone who is looking to better their routine but may not have the most time to focus on it,” she says. The Glow Up Kimono Fragrance Oil was created in an effort to offer beloved scents in a portable manner for blissful aromatherapy. It can be worn every day and is made with calming essential oils such as lavender, bergamot and saff lower. Next, Parigi unveiled her Collagen Eye Mask and Portable Facial Mister. “I wanted to create products that were not only easy to put in your bag, but were fun to wear, take pictures of and post,” she says. “Why not make something that is not only good for you but you could have fun with?” Parigi admits that Richie and his family have been extremely supportive. “I must tell you, it took Lionel a moment to get used to the pink color of the eye mask, but after seeing the results, he’s a believer! Sofia Richie loves and uses them, too.” glowupbeauty.com ■

After designing homes for actors Julianne Hough and Aaron Paul and masterminding spaces for aesthetician Shani Darden’s new Beverly Hills skin clinic and Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings headquarters in Los Angeles, it was time. “In terms of clients, my dream scenario is always a high level of collaboration,” explains the English-born designer.” I love when clients come with ideas but are also interested in exploring and expanding on those ideas together.”

The Secret Lives of Pets Allen Simon invented some

of the most useful pet products on the market, serving customers for nearly 50 years BY K ASEY CAMINITI

I

nventing items that will make a pet owner’s life a little easier has been Allen Simon’s expertise for nearly 50 years. The current CEO and president of PetProducts.com got his start working retail at a pet store in Brooklyn before opening his own business called Four Paws in 1970. Simon saw a space for himself in the pet industry where he could be creative and innovative while helping pet owners. “I manufactured and invented over 200 products, including the original and world-renowned Wee-Wee Pads and the Allen Pooper Scooper,” says Simon. “Over the years, we grew into one of the largest manufacturers in the pet industry.” If you have a puppy, you definitely have a box of Wee-Wee Pads on hand for training accidents. Thriving in the world of pet products, Simon sold Four Paws in 1997 to Central Garden & Pet for nearly $60 million, and stayed on board for the next 15 years. His next venture was a one-stop shop for products, research and reviews called PetProducts.com, and over the past year, he’s focused his efforts entirely on this new ecommerce hub. “People love their pets and consider them part of the family and like to spoil them,” he explains. “We started selling pet products online about six months ago, and it has been growing rapidly ever since.” The site caters to household pets, including dogs, cats, snakes, birds and fish.

In a world where ecommerce reigns supreme, PetProducts.com has found its niche. The brand also has an ongoing relationship with the television series New to the Street, where top pet products available on PetProducts.com are highlighted. “It has helped our business tremendously,” he says. In the last six months, PetProducts.com has grown especially fast, allowing pet owners to shop for everything from a stylish new outfit for their dog or food for their cat from the comfort of their own home. As for the future of PetProducts.com? Simon tells us, “We plan to keep growing the company and serving the public.” petproducts.com ■

In Dolly’s Words

In the new book Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, the musician, actress and songwriter reflects on the greatest hits of her astounding career

Singer, songwriter, actress, producer and philanthropist Dolly Parton has composed over 3,000 songs and sold over 100 million records worldwide in her illustrious career. The multihyphenate has been nominated for every major award and, at 74, she’s looking back on her past successes with a new book: Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics (Chronicle Books). In it, the Country Music Hall of Fame inductee shares the incredible backstories behind three of her most famous ballads.

“Jolene” was a No. 1 country smash and was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1974 and 1975. Dolly finally won a Grammy for the song in 2017 via a collaboration with the a cappella pop group Pentatonix. Her original recording is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame. “‘Jolene’ is my most recorded song. Worldwide, through the years, they say it has been recorded four-hundred-and-some times. Whether it’s in another language or whether it’s a garage band, everybody seems to love that song. I guess every band can sing it, and every woman can relate to it. I never get tired of singing that song. It’s possible that ‘Jolene’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ were written on the same day. When we were going through all my old tapes to put my songs on hard drives, we found that ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘Jolene’ were on the same cassette tape, back-toback. I don’t know; I might have written “Jolene” later that night. When you write so much, you lose track of time, and I wrote so much back then.”

“ I W I L L A L W AY S L O V E Y O U ” ( 1 9 74 ) Parton re-recorded “I Will Always Love You” for the soundtrack of her 1982 movie with Burt Reynolds, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Ten years later, Kevin Costner suggested it to Whitney Houston for the soundtrack of their movie, The Bodyguard. It became one of the biggest pop hits in history and has since been recorded by dozens of other greats. Dolly originally wrote it about trying to end her professional partnership with collaborator Porter Wagoner after more than seven years together.

“I had always dreamed of being my own star, having my own band, and doing my own thing. He’d say, ‘You can’t go. You can’t do that to me, because of all I’ve done for you.’ That whole kind of thing. Or he would try to win the argument by being mean and hateful. Or by trying to pull a guilt trip on me. I thought, ‘Well, why don’t you do what you do best? Why don’t you write it in a song?’ So I went home and wrote this song about bittersweet memories. I said, ‘If I should stay, I would only be in your way.’ But I should have said, ‘You’d only be in my way.’ Ha-ha. Really, we were in each other’s way. He was trying to control something that’s not controllable, and that was making him miserable and me miserable. The song came straight from the bottom of my heart….I was so emotional I was crying when I was writing it. “Elvis loved the song and wanted to record it. But his manager demanded half of my publishing rights. It broke my heart, but I couldn’t give up my copyright. I cried my eyes out, because I could just hear Elvis singing it. But sometimes you just have to stand your ground. Priscilla [Presley] told me years later that it was the song he sang to her when they were leaving the divorce courtroom. So that touched me even more. “Years later, Kevin Costner’s office contacted our office and said, ‘Can we get a copy of Dolly’s song “I Will Always Love You”?’ He said that [producer] David Foster was going to be doing the music for this movie [The Bodyguard]. That sounded good to me, because I had worked with David. But that was the last I’d heard of it. Then one day I was driving my Cadillac back home to Brentwood from my office. I had the radio on, and all of a sudden I heard this

spoken voice say, ‘If I should stay…’ It caught my ear, but I didn’t recognize it. Then, when it went into the music, I thought I was going to wreck the car. I have never had such an overwhelming feeling. I had to pull off to the side of the road, because it just got bigger and bigger and better and better. I have never experienced a greater feeling in my life than hearing Whitney Houston sing that song for the first time. I had already taken it to No. 1 twice by then. But she took that little simple heartbroken song of mine and took it worldwide. For what she did with that, I will always love you, Whitney Houston. Now the song is going to live forever. I thank Porter for that song. I think of him every time I sing it. If it hadn’t been for him, I’d never have written that song.”

“9 TO 5” (1980) “The thing I hate about the movies is all the waiting-around time. I realized early on that I had to do something besides just sitting there or going to the crafts [food] table. I did that and gained weight. Jane [Fonda] gave me good advice, so I said to myself, ‘Dolly, you’ve got to stop eating. They do scenes out of sequence, and you can’t go in the door slim and come out fat. You’ve got to watch what you’re doing.’ So I spent my time watching everything, just soaking everything up like a sponge. I wrote ‘9 to 5’ in my head that way. I’d go back to my hotel at night and put down what I had written that day, playing my guitar and getting it on tape. Over a long period of time, I wrote the song on my nails. I’m famous for that now. Every time I go on TV, I have to ‘play’ my nails like a typewriter.” ■

Is St. Barths The Caribbean’s Savior? This winter, your best bet is a visit to the Caribbean island paradise BY NATASHA WOLFF

W

ith few Caribbean islands open and/or accepting tourists this winter, and even fewer without many confirmed COVID-19 cases, Americans vying for a warm-weather getaway have one place that fits the bill: St. Barths. The island, under French authority, has been vigilant about COVID-19 safety protocols since last spring, when the island was completely shut down to tourists. Since the fall, it’s been open again with stringent precautions and mandates like requiring any entrants to be tested within 72 hours of arrival, and cases have remained relatively low. A recent visit felt safe, and everyone was wearing masks indoors and out. Wellness inf luencer Laurie Lloyd has been visiting the island with her husband, Oliver, for 13 years, staying in various villas and, more recently, the Eden Rock—where she plans to return in February. “St. Barths is a very small island with absolutely delicious food, great shopping, beautiful beaches, long lunches, fun nightlife and, most importantly, lovely people,” she says. So, what’s Lloyd’s idea of the perfect day? “Rent a car and explore the tiny twisty roads and beautiful views. A morning hike is also always a

great idea, especially before a 2 p.m. rosé-filled lunch!” There is a certain je ne sais quoi about the island that lures people back regularly. “There is a mystery in St. Barths’ soil that makes it so unique,” says Felipe Sandoval, Hotel Le Toiny’s director of sales. “Its uniqueness definitely keeps visitors coming back every year.” The best way to travel to the island paradise is on Tradewind Aviation, a U.S.-based aircraft operator providing private charter

service and shuttle flights along the Northeast and Caribbean, via San Juan, Puerto Rico (easily accessible from most airports). “St. Barths opened in late June, and our demand has remained relatively strong during a traditionally slow summer and has now ramped up to full strength in advance of the winter,” says David Zipkin, Tradewind Aviation’s founding member and vice president. “We are seeing a much shorter booking window, but our clients are focused more on longer trips than ever before—this was true for Nantucket this past summer as well.” Tradewind flies Citation CJ light jets and Pilatus PC-12 turboprop planes on this route, and with concerns about health and safety, coupled with fewer airline options these days, many travelers are discovering private charter for the first time. “We are well-positioned for this new market, offering lower-cost entry points with our unique f leet,” says Zipkin. As far as safety and health are concerned, Tradewind has implemented new protocols to minimize the risk of exposure to the virus. “Aircraft interiors are cleaned between each flight and deep cleaned on a regular basis,” Zipkin explains. “The air circulation in our aircraft is quite similar to that of an airline, where the air is completely replaced every few minutes.” So, once you’ve arrived safely on the island, where to stay? There are many world-class hotels, resorts and villas to choose from, but we did the work for you. Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France marries French refinement with a beach house-style setting. It reopened in 2019 after the devastation of Hurricane Irma. Cheval Blanc is the luxury hotel brand of LVMH, and this iconic island property boasts 61 suites and villas beautifully designed by Jacques Grange. Landscape designer Madison Cox has created fragrant gardens that fill the oceanfront property on the white sand Flamands Beach. Chef Jean Imbert oversees La Case restaurant and the feetin-the-sand beach restaurant La Cabane, which specializes in locally sourced produce and Caribbean flavors and is a hot lunchtime scene. “In addition to the unrivaled location on Flamands Beach, the bountiful fauna, the beautiful ambience and style and,

of course, the feet-in-the-sand dining, guests return year after year for the indefinable soul of the Maison,” says the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, Eva Sitarz. A new 7,000-square-foot fivebedroom villa stuns with an infinity pool, private spa, fitness room, dining room and kitchen and is ideal for families and those looking for more privacy. The hotel’s customer service is meticulous and efficient: A call for a shaving kit produced the requested items in 30 seconds and the team routinely sent gifts during our stay. They took care of everything, from arranging transportation and spa appointments to a private hiking guide to tackle the Colombier beach hike (Elisa of local company Body+Soul showed us the ropes) and a private yoga session with her partner Nanda afterward held in the resort’s serene yoga pavilion. The 38-acre luxe bohemian hotel, which first opened in 1992, is spectacular, and the views are a constant companion, whether you are dining at fine restaurant Jarad or lounging beside your private pool. The 22-villa property features spacious one- and two-bedroom suites (each with its own private heated pool) located across the hillside along one of the most rugged and beautiful coastlines on the island. The hotel’s interiors showcase natural materials—linen, sun-bleached teak, mother-ofpearl and petrified wood—and a white-and-blue color palette creates a breezy aesthetic that perfectly matches the cerulean ocean below. Its remote and private location keeps guests, who like to maintain a low profile (celebrities and media magnates alike), returning to this a perfect romantic hideaway. The Beach Club restaurant, lounge and beach area (only accessible on foot or via the hotel’s signature Jeep) is the chicest all-day destination in town, with chill French tunes and delicious dishes like tuna tartare, grilled lobster and roast Peri Peri chicken with French fries—and rosé, of course! “Le Toiny defines the privacy and authenticity that St. Barths is so proud of,” says Sandoval. “All of our villa suites offer ocean views, private heated pools and tons of space—something that we can’t get enough of right now.” The Rev. Charlie and Mandie Vere Nicoll, the British visionaries behind Isle de France (now Cheval Blanc), bought Le Toiny with several investors in 2015 and have maintained its distinctive atmosphere. letoiny.com So book a trip to St. Barths this winter: Book a stay at Cheval Blanc or Le Toiny, enjoy dinner at Maya’s, hike to Colombier beach and drink lots of ice-cold rosé—it’s the perfect way to say goodbye to 2020. ■

When The Oberoi Marrakech opened at the end of 2019, it marked the end of a multiyear construction period that made it one of the city’s most highly anticipated openings of recent years. Fusing Moroccan and Andalusian architectural styles, the ambitious structure evokes a traditional Moroccan palace where soaring domes, curved arches and tall pillars are decorated with intricate ceramic tiling and carvings that took 200 craftsmen two years to complete. An inner courtyard looks out over the hotel’s Alhambra-inspired Grand Canal and, beyond that, acres of olive tree-filled gardens and the Atlas Mountains. This breathtaking setting provides a dramatic backdrop for three restaurants, a boutique, pool and spa. CARY ISN’T THE FIRST WORD YOU’D USE TO DESCRIBE SARAH Paulson. In fact, by her own admission, “no one is a bigger scaredy cat than me. I jump at my own shadow.” But yet, in 2020, she inhabited two truly evil characters: troubled mother Diane in the film Run (now streaming on Hulu) and nurse Mildred Ratched in the Netflix original series Ratched. “Here I am acting in these extreme situations where you’re being asked to simulate really very emotional situations where the pendulum swings so wildly,” Paulson explains during our Zoom chat. “It’s so delicious. And you get away with a lot more largesse in your acting when the stakes are high. There’s nothing middling about it.” This coming year will see her taking on a real-life monster—or at least someone many of us think of that way: the late Linda Tripp, in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Impeachment: American Crime Story, the latest installment of his anthology series for FX. At 46, Paulson has never been busier, but she can’t put her finger on what attracts her to these complicated parts. “I’m not looking for something specific in a role but looking for an internal bell that lets me know when I’m afraid of something,” Paulson explains. “When I don’t see a path toward it clearly, I know that means I have to do it. I like to be as far away from me as possible. The more terrified I am of a role, the more likely I am to say yes.” Of course, Paulson is lucky enough to have found a frequent collaborator to whom she can often say yes in the form of Murphy. She first appeared in his series Nip/Tuck in 2004, and he’s the creator and producer of Ratched and American Crime Story. Her portrayal of O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark in 2016’s The People v. earned her Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. “Ryan Murphy is such a feminist and such an amplifier of women— really, of any disenfranchised group,” says Paulson. “He really puts a spotlight on women and storytelling for women over 45 years old.” The last decade has been good to Paulson (Carol, Ocean’s Eight, Bird Box, Twelve Years a Slave, and Mrs. America, to name a few—and 10 seasons of Murphy’s American Horror Story). “We’re real friends,” she says of Murphy, with whom she talks on the phone for hours regularly (even when she spends her days on set with him). “It’s a platonic love story.” Another love story—albeit one that’s more surprising—has been Paulson’s with Tripp, the former White House and Pentagon employee whose secret audiotapes of former friend Monica Lewinsky led to the 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton. “What was interesting to me is this story is really about these three women: Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp,” says Paulson. “There is one predominant thing that we forget: that these are human beings and multidimensional people. This series gives you an opportunity to understand some of the behavior. I have more in common with Linda than I care to admit. My impatience, my desire for everything to be just so. I can tap into that with Linda. I felt a connection with her.” Her thorough transformation into roles like Tripp is impressive, given how genuinely kind and funny she seems. “The whole time we worked together, I was thinking how crazy it is that this laughter-loving human could turn herself into the world’s most despicable human at the drop of a hat,” says Run director Aneesh

Chaganty. “But then, when the cameras aren’t rolling, she’s back to being the coolest person in the room. Watching Sarah act is watching your movie get better. Period.” Her friend Diane Keaton is as impressed with Paulson onscreen as off. “She’s the real thing,” says Keaton. “A character-driven actress. When she leaps into those parts, my jaw drops. It’s just part of the whole landscape of her career.” Like many of us, Paulson has survived 2020 thanks to a new puppy (Winifred T. Paulson or Winnie—the “T” is for Paulson’s partner of five years, Holland Taylor) and sharing a lot of laughs and memes with longtime friends like Keaton and Amanda Peet. “Sarah makes me laugh so hard that, on several occasions, I’ve peed in my pants. And this was even before I had children,” says Peet. “We are kind of a disaster, because the instinct to be inappropriate has only gotten worse as we’ve gotten older.” Paulson relishes her frequent pre-COVID-19 dinners with Keaton, where the two eat and drink wine. “We love going to restaurants and coming up with life stories about the people dining around us. It’s so delightful,” she says. Keaton echoes the sentiment. “She’s smart as a whip, hilarious and curious about people’s behavior,” says Keaton. “Which makes our dinners so fun. I miss not being able to go out with her over the past nine months. She’s easy to be friends with.” Paulson and Taylor maintain separate homes in Los Angeles—for those worried about Winnie, she travels back and forth. “We are both really independent, and there is a fluidity and elasticity to our living arrangement that works well for both of us and takes the pressure off,” says Paulson. “It’s been a good thing to allow a change of scenery. It’s such a blessing to not feel injured by wanting that space. We’re not so interested in a total mutation of our ways.” Plus, since November, both actresses have been back on set (Paulson is currently filming Impeachment and Taylor is filming a streaming series). “Frankly, the dog is the one who’s really suffering.” ■

R YAN STREET OF RYAN STREET ARCHITECTS AND EMILY SEIDERS of Studio Seiders are frequent collaborators in Austin, Texas, having worked together on a number of projects over the past decade. “We speak the same design language,” says Seiders of Street, “which makes the process efficient, fun and creatively inspiring.” So when the local owners of a hilltop Rollingwood property needed an architect and a designer for a ground-up family home, they turned to the duo. The four-year construction process yielded a one-story, U-shaped home centered around a vast courtyard. “It’s reminiscent of the ranch-style homes you might find speckled throughout Marfa and other areas of South Texas,” says Street. “The low-profile home was designed to be casual and functional, with a deliberate connection between indoor and outdoor living.” Knowing the homeowners and their three children made things comfortable and collaborative for the pair when tackling the new construction project, which was built by Michael Deane Homes. “We wanted it to feel like a remodel of an old ranch house and intentionally designed the primary hallway to give the impression that it might have originally been the home’s porch,” Street explains. “We opted for a thin footprint so that all sides open to the home’s natural surroundings, welcoming unhindered views and plenty of natural light.” The materials the duo chose are humble and practical. “They are expressions of beauty in and of themselves,” says Street. “There’s authenticity in the union of rough-hewn reclaimed materials and polished ones and something special about having the home’s exterior materials merge into the interior spaces.” Warm white plaster, custom white oak paneling and ceilings and reclaimed wood beams add texture and depth to the architecture so that the home doesn’t feel too new or perfect. “We gravitate toward texture any way we can get it,” says Seiders, “from classic saltillo tile in the entry to the steel vent hood in the kitchen and steel fireplace surround in the lounge, all of which help to round out the material palate.” The indoor-outdoor connection is enhanced with skylights offering views of the sky and surrounding environment.

As the homeowners love to entertain, the music lounge, bar and other living spaces are the most popular rooms in the house. “Austin has one of the most vibrant music scenes in the country, and this music lounge and bar space not only pays homage to that, but has played host to impromptu concerts by up-and-coming and established Texas artists,” says Seiders. Bar lights and a rustcolored velvet sofa by RW Guild, a walnut-and-bronze coffee table by Sawkille, steel fireplace and vintage de Sede leather lounge chairs surrounded by dark, earthy charcoal walls (SherwinWilliams Black Fox) create a sexy, cozy room. For time spent en famille, the light, bright family room is the place to be. An oversize sectional by Verellen, sisal-and-suede rug by Ashe and Leandro for Merida, vintage Sigurd Ressell lounge chair and vintage coffee table from Eneby Home adorn the room. A basement game room with concrete walls, tiled concrete f loors and white oak paneling and vintage leather Ligne Roset sectional is another favorite hangout room for game nights and movie watching. Throughout the home, a color palette of deep blues and greens with hints of rust, coral and turquoise was inspired by the “legendary west Texas sky,” says Seiders. And the whole home is an impressive homage to the beauty of the South. ■

attends the French fashion house’s runway shows and events. “Maria Grazia Chiuri’s interpretation of Dior is what I want to do in my acting,” explains Graham. “She gives a voice to the voiceless.” This includes incorporating traditional African textiles and fabrics into Dior’s resort collection (which Graham is modeling in this photo shoot). Clearly, the feeling is mutual: “Kat is a perfect representation of the current Dior aesthetic simply because she is authentic,” says Chiuri. “She wears her clothes in a natural way, thereby embodying my idea of what it is to be a woman who chooses fashion as a tool to reflect her own identity.” While Graham explores many different creative avenues, there is a common thread through it all. “I want to bring attention to the things and people that need to be paid attention to,” says Graham. “With my humanitarian work, it’s refugees. Through my acting, it’s marginalized communities or relationships and aesthetics that people might overlook or undervalue. Maria Grazia does that with her fashion, and I think that’s why I’m super devoted to her.” Graham has also just been named a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, joining the likes of Cate Blanchett, Ben Stiller and Kristin Davis. She is only the fifth American to be appointed to the role. The 31-year-old, Swiss-born Graham began her career as a backup dancer for Pharrell Williams and Jamie Foxx both onstage and in music videos

before joining the Black Eyed Peas on tour in 2007 as their supporting act. At the same time, she was branching out into acting, taking roles in The O.C. and, most notably, The Vampire Diaries for eight seasons. Graham’s latest role is in the new Netf lix film Operation Christmas Drop. It’s based on the real-life U.S. Air Force humanitarian mission of the same name, an annual holiday tradition of airdropping much-needed supplies to the locals in Guam. The film also features a biracial romance (Graham stars opposite actor Alexander Ludwig). “What Netflix does with me, and they also did this in The Holiday Calendar, is that they don’t think twice about putting a Black girl with a white man,” she says. “They normalize those things and empower young Black leads.” Following a busy year of films like Operation Christmas Drop, Cut Throat City and Emperor, Graham’s next roles include voicing April in Netf lix’s animated martial arts superhero film Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She also has new music slated for release early in the new year. The album will showcase a different sound from her 2017 album Love Music Funk Magic, which f lirted with groov y disco vibes. While Graham can’t reveal much, she does disclose that fans can expect a new moniker for the star that will also serve as the album’s title. “It’s a different genre of music. I’ve just gone left.” But everything else she’s doing feels so right. ■

GRAHAM IS IN HAIR AND MAKEUP PREPARING for a photo shoot at the Towers of the Waldorf Astoria residences in New York City on a gloomy November day. The actress and musician has always had a love for all things glam, but, since she’s been quarantining at her home in Atlanta for most of the year, she’s learned to live with less. “I’ve really stopped hiding everything,” says Graham. “We all want to cover up and pretend like we’re OK, but I think that the more honest you are about where you’re at, the more beautiful you are.” Discovering new beauty and hair routines on her own has been revealing and powerful for Graham, and has brought her to a new place of self-acceptance. “Hair has been a spiritual journey for me this year,” she says. “I’ve really learned to accept my curls, my ’fro and my African roots.” Graham describes going to a hair salon at age 6 because her mother, who is white, didn’t know how to style her hair’s texture. “My mom would just drop me off at the salon. Emotionally, it felt like I was being rejected because my parent couldn’t really handle it.” After associating “manageable” hair with success in her personal and professional life for so long, she says it’s freeing to feel content with her natural locks. “Whether you’re Black or not, we all struggle with self-acceptance,” she says, “and we all have our own individual journeys.” Graham’s fashion journey has been another form of self-expression. She is a fan of Dior and regularly

Much has been written about the Beatles and their elusive founder John Lennon, from his early beginnings to his tragic end. In James Patterson’s new book, The Last Days of John Lennon, the author delves specifically into the fraught final years of the iconic band and the tragic death of Lennon. The true crime book features exclusive interviews with Lennon’s friends and associates (even bandmate Paul McCartney!), ensuring you won’t be able to put it down. What follows is an excerpt that details the band’s split as tensions between bandmates mounted.

LLEN KLEIN CALLS A SATURDAY meeting on September 20. The Apple offices are empty as the Beatles file into the boardroom. Klein has hammered out a new deal with EMI’s Capitol Records that w ill sha r ply ra ise the Beatles’ cut of wholesale record prices from 17.5 to 25 percent. John, with Yoko by his side, stares across the table at Paul. Tell them now that you’re done, he wills himself. Instead, John launches an attack on Paul and his contributions to Abbey Road. “I liked the ‘A’ side but I never liked that sort of pop opera on the other side. I think it’s junk because it was just bits of songs thrown together. ‘Come Together’ is all right, that’s all I remember. That was my song.” Paul takes the slings and arrows. The pain gets worse. As Paul tries to convince John that they can find compromises to his complaints, John’s suddenly had enough. “You don’t seem to understand, do you? The group is over. I’m leaving,” he tells them. “I must say I felt guilty at springing it on them at such short notice,” he later ref lects, though Paul says, “I remember him saying, ‘It’s weird, this, telling you I’m leaving the group, but in a way it’s very exciting.’ It was like when he told Cynthia he was getting a divorce.”

On September 26, John returns to the studio. With Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass, and Ringo on drums, he records 26 takes of “Cold Turkey” and rejects them all. That same day, Abbey Road gets its U.K. release. “It’s strange that we have now reached the point where nobody worries TOO much about what the Beatles are doing on record,” Melody Maker writes in its review of what will go on to become the group’s bestselling album. Many critics single out the album’s second song, the one inspired by George’s wife, Pattie. “‘Something’ is a song of mine,” 26-year-old George says in an interview with the Detroit Free Press, “probably the nicest melody I’ve ever written.” John and Paul don’t agree on much these days, except that the song is indeed George’s best work yet. Frank Sinatra elevates the praise for “Something,” calling it “the greatest love song in the past 50 years” and covering the song in his own live performances. Musically, it is a fine farewell. The big valedictory comes, fittingly, on “The End,” with John, George, and Paul trading guitar solos (after an unprecedented Ringo drum solo) before landing on the line “And in the end / The love you take / Is equal to the love you make.” From his vantage point in the control room, engineer Geoff Emerick observed, “John, Paul, and George looked like they had

more personal than that. “When people get married they usually make their own wedding albums,” John says, something to “show to the relatives when they come round. Well, our relatives are the… what you call fans.” He continues, “We’re public personalities,” and— referring to another celebrity couple that happens to be celebrating a first anniversary that same October 20—“I’d enjoy reading Jackie and Onassis’s album.” The chorus of “Give Peace a Chance” echoes through Washington, D.C. On November 15, activist Pete Seeger leads 250,000 demonstrators through Lennon’s lyrics in protest of the mounting death toll in the Vietnam War, in which American casualties surpass 40,000. John and Yoko are heartened that their message is making a difference, pledging, “We’ll keep promoting peace in the way we do which, whichever way you look at it, is our way, because we’re artists and not politicians.” John’s unbothered when he and Yoko are mocked for their activism. “Laurel and Hardy, that’s John and Yoko,” he comments. Better not to be taken too seriously anyway, “because all the serious people like Martin Luther King and Kennedy and Gandhi get shot.” Ten days later, John has his chauffeur drive the psychedelic Rolls to Buckingham Palace to return the MBE medal awarded him by the queen in 1965, along with a note stating it was being done in protest of the British government’s support of America in the Vietnam War “and against ‘Cold Turkey’ slipping down the charts.” He explains his decision in a live interview on BBC TV. “Really shouldn’t have taken it,” he says of the MBE medal. “Felt I had sold out. ‘I must get rid of it,’ I kept saying, ‘I must get rid of it.’ So I did. Wanted to get rid of it by 1970 anyway.” John and Yoko create an international ad campaign around the slogan “War is over! If you want it.” The message, appearing in newspapers and on billboards, is signed “Happy Christmas, John and Yoko.” Though some people find the message too facile — American antiwar activist John Sinclair sneers, “You are going to sound awfully fucking stupid trying to tell the heroic Vietnamese people that ‘the war is over if you want it’ while they are being burned and bombed and blown out of their pitiful little huts and fields”—John explains that it’s not about ignoring reality but about taking action. “You’ve got the power,” he says. “All we have to do is remember that: We’ve all got the power. That’s why we said ‘War is over if you want it.’ … Don’t believe that jazz that there’s nothing you can do, ‘Just turn on and drop out, man.’ You’ve got to turn on and drop in. Or they’re going to drop all over you.” The Daily Mail names John Clown of the Year for his actions. But on December 30, ATV in England airs an hourlong special featuring three men, each chosen as a Man of the Decade: American president John F. Kennedy, Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh—and British rock star John Lennon. Rather than focusing on the violence and turmoil of the past decade, John has a sunnier view. “Not many people are noticing all the good that came out of the last 10 years,” John tells the interviewer, famed zoologist Desmond Morris. “And this is only the beginning,” he continues, sounding optimistic about the future of the peace movement. “The sixties was just waking up in the morning, and we haven’t even got to dinnertime yet. And I can’t wait, you know, I just can’t wait. I’m so glad to be around. And it’s just gonna be great. It’s gonna be wonderful and I believe it.”

John and Yoko perform their new song on the Top of the Pops program, propelling it toward a top-five ranking in both the U.K. and America. It’s the first time one of the Beatles has performed on the program without the others. Meanwhile, Paul continues creating 13 songs to fill a homemade eponymous album, scheduled for release on April 17. The rivalry between the two songwriting partners is ferociously rekindled. The supposedly back-to-basics songs that the Beatles recorded in the studio and performed on the rooftop, as well as the film documenting the making of this album, have yet to come out. All four Beatles

gone back in time, like they were kids again, playing together for the sheer enjoyment of it. More than anything, they reminded me of gunslingers, with their guitars strapped on, looks of steely-eyed resolve, determined to outdo one another. Yet there was no animosity, no tension at all—you could tell they were simply having fun.” But that’s all in the past when, on October 20, Apple releases the single “Cold Turkey.” John’s testament is uncomfortably received. “‘Cold Turkey’ talks about thirty-six hours rolling in pain,” says the music coordinator of Detroit’s WKNR-FM. The BBC bans its airplay. “They thought it was a pro-drugs song,” John later tells BBC1 radio DJ Andy Peebles. “To some, it was a rock ’n’ roll version of The Man with the Golden Arm,” a 1955 Frank Sinatra film showing his character suffering from drug withdrawal. That same day, Apple releases John and Yoko’s Wedding Album in the United States (it comes out a few weeks later in the U.K., on November 7). They’d recorded it in April and, during a break on the afternoon of the 22nd, had gone up to the Apple rooftop to take part in a quick ceremony in front of a commissioner for oaths, ratifying John’s formal name change from John Winston Lennon to John Ono Lennon. “Yoko changed her name for me. I’ve changed mine for her. One for both, both for each other,” John declares. Wedding Album, side 1 of which offers John and Yoko pronouncing each other’s names for almost twenty-three minutes over a backing track of their heartbeats, marks the third of a trio of experimental albums that started with Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins and continued with Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions (which also included a recorded heartbeat, that of their miscarried son). The album is a critical and commercial dud, but John shrugs it off. “We didn’t expect a hit record out of it,” he later tells the BBC. It was

have approval over who will polish the songs to create an album they’ll call Let It Be. John and George propose Phil Spector, and Paul and Ringo agree. But Paul is horrified at what Spector does to his songs. When Spector begins work, on March 23, the George Martin– produced version of “Let It Be” (the Beatles’ last single with their longtime producer) is already No. 2 on the UK charts. “Let It Be” is Paul’s song, as is “The Long and Winding Road.” Spector remixes both. When Paul hears “harps, horns, an orchestra, and women’s choir” on “The Long and Winding Road,” he’s first astonished, then enraged that he wasn’t consulted. “I would never have female voices on a Beatles record,” he tells journalist Ray Connolly. Things are further complicated when McCartney, Paul’s solo album, is pushed from April to June so that Let It Be can come out first. John and George write Paul a letter (addressed “From Us to You”), which Ringo delivers on their behalf. It reads, “We’re sorry it turned out like this—it’s nothing personal. Love John & George. Hare Krishna.” But Paul is still livid and takes it all very personally. In an effort to appease him, Ringo persuades the others to reinstate McCartney’s April 17 on-sale date. On April 10, Apple issues a press release touting the health of the band: “The Beatles are alive and well and the Beat goes on, the Beat goes on.” The release of McCartney is a week away, but Paul can’t face promoting the album with a press conference. He instead has Apple publicist Peter Brown (who’d orchestrated John and Yoko’s wedding plans) craft a questionnaire. When asked if this was the start of a solo career or a break with the Beatles, Paul replies “Time will tell” and “Both”; his response to whether his break with the Beatles will be temporary or permanent is “I don’t really know.” But his one-word answer to the follow-up question is a bombshell: Q. Do you foresee a time when Lennon-McCartney will become an active songwriting partnership again?

Lennon and Ono marry in 1969 and stage a lengthy “Bed-In” Peace Protest as part of their honeymoon

A. No. The Daily Mirror breaks the news—PAUL QUITS BEATLES—and he confirms it, telling the Record Mirror on April 18 how much working solo suits him. “I only had me to ask for a decision, and I agreed with me.” John is woken from a deep sleep when reporter Ray Connolly calls for his comment. John is floored by the double cross. “Oh, Christ,” he shouts into the phone. “He gets all the credit for it!” Let It Be goes on sale May 8. The next day, New Musical Express publishes a searing review titled “Have the Beatles Sold Out?,” which decries the album, with its doubled sticker price and funereal black cover, as a “cardboard tombstone.” “Musically, boys, you passed the audition,” assesses the critic for Rolling Stone, harking back to John’s closing line atop the Apple roof before concluding that the f law of overproduction “somehow doesn’t seem to matter much anymore anyway.” Paul defends himself to the press: “I didn’t leave the Beatles. The Beatles have left the Beatles, but no one wanted to be the one to say the party’s over.” The next time John sees his former bandmate, he’s larger than life. With McCartney atop the U.S. Billboard charts on the strength of the anticipation of Paul’s solo effort, which includes the ballad “Maybe I’m Amazed,” John and Yoko travel to San Francisco to meet with 24-year-old Rolling Stone writer Jann Wenner about booking an interview. The three of them (and Jann’s wife, Jane) slip unrecognized into a nearly empty theater to see Let It Be. Though the film (which goes on to win an Oscar and a Grammy for Best Original Score) had premiered in New York on May 13, none of the Beatles attended. John is seeing it now for the first time. At the sight of Paul singing on the rooftop of Apple records, first John, then Yoko, dissolves into tears. “He’s crying, she’s crying, and we’re just trying to hold on to ourselves,” Wenner says. “You’re there helping come to the emotional rescue of the Beatles.” ■

Since launching with its hero product Vital Face Oil in 2019, Antedotum has released an Elixir Firming Serum to help remedy a number of skin issues, from extreme weather to altitude and hyperpigmentation. Founder Karina Perez-Marconi started Antedotum to ameliorate the harsh effects on skin that come from an active outdoor lifestyle. “The purity and potency of our ingredients is paramount, so we partnered with small farms in Colorado and Oregon who are just as obsessive about this as we are,” says PerezMarconi, who worked in the luxury beauty industry, including at Chanel, before founding her brand in Aspen. “This unparalleled landscape inspires us to bring you the cleanest, most pure products from the American birthplace of CBD. My intention is to cultivate happiness though healing by building luxuriously beautiful, plantpowered skincare with potent restorative therapies to transform your skin.”

As a former L’Oréal executive, Harmony Bowman possessed all the know-how needed to launch a beauty brand. Sidelined with an illness in 2017, Bowman was on bedrest and decided to create CBD-infused skincare line Blue Willow. “I began exploring the healing power of plants,” Bowman says. “I began making balms, oils and bath soaks with the aim of creating a brand that is as effective as it is beautiful.” Blue Willow launched with a body balm, body oil and bath soak, made with high-quality carbon dioxideextracted, full-spectrum CBD oil and infused with botanicals and essential oils. “I get all of my ingredients from very small, reputable wholesalers and farmers that I know I can trust,” says Bowman of her products and their sustainable packaging. With products created to help soothe sore muscles (especially after a long day on the slopes) and fight inflammation, the bodycare space is ideal for the Aspenite. “My husband and I got married at the top of Aspen Mountain, and Blue Willow was inspired

women to improve their skin

SEVEN UP

Chicago’s new lifestyle brand Best of Seven has just launched its very first collection of stylish and functional handbags, accessories and apparel. Founder and sports enthusiast Julie Christopher is disrupting the female fanwear market with her game day–appropriate pieces. Each spirited piece is crafted “for women who want to look and feel great while cheering for something special.” Finished in soft leather, bag options such as The Signature Bag, which can be worn in seven different ways, are completely customizable. bestofseven.com

How does it work? Dermaflash removes dead skin cells, built-up debris and pesky peach fuzz to instantly reveal smooth, radiant and younger skin. It amps up the efficacy of skincare by removing the barrier to penetration, while also creating a flawless canvas for makeup. What are the benefits? Dermaflash is first and foremost an exfoliating device with the added benefit of peach fuzz removal. Women grow vellus hair that is light and cottony, and this device was specifically designed for women’s delicate skin.

WINTER 2020

SMOOTH OPERATOR Dara Levy of Dermaflash is empowering

What’s special about this device? Before Dermaflash, dermaplaning was a little-known treatment that was only available in doctors’ offices or medical spas. All women desire smooth, radiant, fuzz-free skin, yet most do not have access to a spa offering the treatment, and the price of a single session is prohibitive. I decided to bring dermaplaning into the mainstream and empower women to take their skincare concerns into their own hands, on their own schedules, in the safety and comfort of their own homes.

From 1975 to 2010, the brand focused on creating perfumes for private clients. “When I joined the brand in 2010, the challenge was to translate this bespoke experience into an exclusive retail experience,” says Anne-Lise Cremona. “The exercise was extremely delicate and took several years, as we wanted to write a unique story in the perfume industry.” She is eager to attract a younger clientele as well, one that understands the value and uniqueness of what they offer. “Like an experienced couturier who masters its craft, we have this rare gift of being able to materialize perfumes that have a strong identity that aren’t trendy,” says Cremona.

Designed by French interior designer Christophe Tollemer to resemble a classic 19th-century French apartment, the interior’s old oak walls, chevron flooring and matte gold ceiling with a Porta Romana Bianca chandelier lead to an illuminated Corian perfume womb housing hand-blown crystal flacons of the brand’s 50 Les Classiques fragrances. “Our ingredients come from every corner of the earth,” explains Cremona. “The variety of plants and climates offer us an infinite amount of choices—we work with 1,200 ingredients in the lab. The South of France and the Mediterranean region offer a wonderful playground for perfumers with a wide variety of scents that we, of course, use in our creations.” So, does Cremona have a favorite fragrance? “I like to compose my perfume collection as a wardrobe that I wear depending on my moods, the season or the occasion,” she explains. “I travel with six perfumes, including Mrs. Y, Rose Supreme, Temporaline and my bespoke perfume, of course.” But, she cautions, the fragrances aren’t meant to be mixed. “All of our perfumes are complete as they are. They hold a delicate and perfect balance.” parfumshenryjacques.com

In the absence of an in-person Art Basel Miami Beach art fair this winter, art collectors and design enthusiasts in Miami got their cultural fill with the introduction of Miami Design District’s Design Miami/Podium. The new concept was held from November 27 to December 6 in the historic Moore Building, where Design Miami first opened in 2005. Craig Robins, founder of the Miami Design District and co-founder of Design Miami, says that the neighborhood has always been dedicated to creativity, and he was excited to welcome Design Miami back. “The fair returned to a neighborhood it influenced greatly but which has grown and changed so much. It is surrounded by so many other rich cultural experiences,” says Robins. The new, intimate experience featured a number of international design galleries presenting installations at the Moore Building and activations, live events and more across the vibrant 18-block open-air neighborhood, at ICA Miami and de la Cruz Collection. “The open-air setting of the Design District is optimal right now—we’re a neighborhood that is spacious by design, with ample public space, contactless parking and great safety protocols in place,” explains Robins. “Our outdoor activations and really low density mean that guests can immerse themselves in culture in a

Fivestory’s new Madison Avenue flagship; Karen Murray

A New Chapter

Nestled on Madison Avenue, surrounded by neighbors such as Acquavella Galleries, Sant Ambroeus and La Maison du Chocolat, high-end retailer Fivestory has a posh new home. Recently acquired by fashion industry executive Karen Murray, Fivestory carries brands like Proenza Schouler, Staud and Rosetta Getty alongside a curated selection of vintage pieces from Valentino, Chanel and Dior. The store’s new Upper East Side home is a stunning two-story row house from 1913 spanning 4,000 square feet and featuring huge windows overlooking Madison Avenue. “Fivestory has a loyal customer base that is important to us and whom we will continue to serve,” says Murray. “Given the current climate, we have shifted to a more casual offering. We are gravitating toward items that are versatile and reliable, like great blazers, sweaters and jeans.” Murray says that the store’s clientele is itching to get dressed up, though—even if just to run errands. “Dressing up doesn’t need to be fussy,” she explains. “Pairing a chunky, fuzzy sweater over a silk slip dress and sneakers is a pulledtogether look that’s still comfortable.” Murray is a firm believer in the power of brick-and-mortar and feels that there is a void in the wake of stores like Jeffrey and Barneys closing. “I believe that there is still an allure of walking into a store, browsing, touching and feeling, sitting down and relaxing, discovering, and then walking out with your purchase,” says Murray. “That feeling of going to a place where you know you can discover new brands and pick up a special outfit or a hostess gift.” fivestoryny.com

THE MIX MASTER

This winter, Sperone Westwater gallery on the Lower East Side will mount a solo exhibition of recent work by artist Peter Sacks. Republic showcases paintings in which the layers of history, myth, ritualistic practices and literary references run deep and are deeply informed. The South Africa-born Sacks is an Oxford-educated Rhodes Scholar and Yale Ph.D. Since 1980, he’s also been an English professor at Johns Hopkins and Harvard (where he still teaches). Recently described in the pages of The New Yorker as “one of the most exciting painters in America” Sacks utilizes diverse, workaday materials like cotton, burlap, lace, wood and cardboard, some fleetingly imprinted with poetic texts typed on the cloth by the artist using a manual typewriter. Sacks also composes with fragments of Indian textiles, indigo blue cottons from South Africa, antique kimonos from Japan and embroidered linen from Normandy. The twisted, torn and joyful pieces of fabric evoke unfurled banners, flowing rivers, semaphore flags—and, in this new series, the skyline of American cities. The recycling of fabrics from the global textile trade suggests the labor involved in their making, while intimating a sense of impermanence and loss, migration and diaspora. speronewestwater.com

even years ago, Erica Liu Williams, founder of gr8nola, was immersed in the world of tech. But an experiment in her kitchen during an annual cleanse with her husband led the Danville, California-based food entrepreneur to the idea for a healthy granola brand. The resulting six flavors are packed with organic coconut oil and anti-inflammatory spices such as turmeric and cinnamon. “One day, the light bulb went off and I thought, there has to be a market for this,” recalls Williams, who previously struggled to find tasty granolas with a clean ingredient profile. “In June 2013, I sold gr8nola at my first farmer’s market. It was a humble start, and I looked at it as a fun little side project.” Here, the full-time granola expert dishes on her stint as a competitive swimmer and what’s up next. gr8nola.com DUJOUR.COM

What’s your backstory? Growing up, I was always very into health and fitness. I swam competitively at a very high level from a young age. We have a new flavor launching midJanuary with Girl Up (a United Nations nonprofit organization focused on gender equality and empowering young girls through leadership development) and television personality Nigel Barker, who is highly involved in the organization. The flavor is classic with a superfood twist. I’m mentoring five selected girls with Nigel to give them firsthand entrepreneurial experience.

A Doll’s Life This winter, make it a mini

BY EDWARD ESPITIA

As you scrolled through endless feeds on TikTok and Instagram during the ennui that was 2020, you may have noticed that miniatures and dollhouses are having their moment. There are television competition shows dedicated to the craft, and high-end auction houses have taken advantage of the demand. This month, Sotheby’s is expected to fetch $45,000 auctioning a miniature dinner service from the most famous dollhouse you may have never heard of, the one built for Queen Mary at Windsor Castle. The house was designed by famed architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, who was the most in-demand residential architect in 1921 when Princess Marie Louise commissioned the house for her cousin and friend Queen Mary in the years following the First World War. Lutyens did not take this commission lightly and created a committee that held “Dolleluiah Dinners” at the Savoy to raise funds for the project. The dollhouse is one of the largest ever constructed at 1:12 scale and required the talents of 250 craftsmen and manufacturers and more than 700 artists. The Palladian-style house is a feat of engineering; Lutyens was determined that the structure be viewable from all sides, so he designed a mechanism that allowed the outer walls to slide up to reveal the lavish rooms within. It is also fully plumbed in with running water and f lushing commodes. It was designed as an Edwardian-era townhouse and reveals the opulence the royal family lived in at the time—not only in the design of the rooms themselves, but also in its meticulous recreation of the furnishings and accoutrements of daily life. Everything from the fully stocked kitchen to a pianoforte, tester beds, sewing machine and Champagne bottles, all the way down to a humble tube of toothpaste, are all crafted in perfect scale. It is said that Queen Mary’s favorite element was a clever drawer that pulls out to reveal a gorgeous English garden designed by landscape architect Gertrude Jekyll. The completed dollhouse was displayed at The Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924 before being moved to its permanent home at Windsor Castle, where it is on display for all to see today.
