I always start thinking about Christmas as soon as the schools go back at the end of summer, but the serious planning doesn’t really kick in until I’ve done The Lists: one for decs and crafty bits to make them; one for gifts, obvs, and one for food/booze. Ma Richmond, the Yoda of list-making, has sub-lists of lists, but I’m not at her level yet! So grab a notebook while you’re flicking through this issue, cos you’ll be seeing a whole lot of inspo for your home, yourself and everyone you love. There are loads of simple makes and styling tricks, for those special, sparkling touches that make it personal. If you see something you want to buy, don’t bother heading out and braving the crowds – just download the Ownable app, find Style at Home and tap to shop. Sorted!

Danielle Parisi ABOUT ME I’m 36 and I live in a five-bedroom property in Milton Keynes with my husband Ian, 39, and our two daughters Lia, three, and Mel, one. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE HOMEWARES SHOP? I have quite a few favourites – Mia Fleur, Oliver Bonas, Zara Home, H&M Home and Ikea for pieces I can customise.

ABOUT ME I’m 43 and I live in a three-bedroom new-build semi in Birmingham with my son Kofi, 15 WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? I’m now a lot more confident in my style choices and I’m happy to make things that I would have previously paid over the odds for. I recently made a beautiful flower wall that I’m so pleased with.

Lucy Fisk

Saira Wood

ABOUT ME I’m 35 and I live in a Sixties two-bedroom bungalow in Kent with my husband Karl, 35, and sons Nate, eight, and Leo, seven. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR DECOR IDEAS? I live in Whitstable, which has a huge array of vintage furniture shops and I love to mooch around them, looking for pieces I can make beautiful again and use in my home.

ABOUT ME I’m 30 and I live a three-bedroom semi in Plymouth with my daughter Callie, one. WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED? When I first moved in, I had the original wood floorboards in the sitting room sanded and varnished. While they look stunning, I’ve come to realise I’m definitely more of a cosy carpet person.

Gill Prior

Kayleigh Wallace ABOUT ME I’m 31 and I live in a five-bedroom period property in Fife with my husband Krys, 37, and daughter Amelia, two. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM? We have a room that doubles up as Amelia’s playroom and a family room. It’s such a great space for all her toys and we can all cosy up in there to watch films together.

SHOW IT OFF! Proud of your latest project? Whether it’s a whole-house redo or just an Instagram-worthy shelfie, we want to see it! Email us at styleathome@ti-media.com with some photos and your hard work could be featured in a future issue.

ABOUT ME I’m 42 and I live in a two-bedroom semi-detached house in Cheshire. WHAT’S YOUR BEST HOME STYLE TIP? Make decor choices that leave you feeling soothed. Your house is your sanctuary away from the stress of everyday life, so it should make you go ‘ahh…’ whenever you step through the front door.

We want to see your home projects!

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Abby Cunane, 31, and I work in business development for a law firm. MY HOME A two-bedroom modern flat in Southampton, which was built in 2006. WHEN I MOVED IN The property was an ex-rental flat, so it needed lots of updating. It still had the original carpets, magnolia walls and was very tired, so everything needed redoing. AND NOW I would describe my home as very me! It’s light and airy with neutral, light colours. I like character and traditional features, which you don’t seem to find in new builds, so I’ve had to add what I can. STYLE TIP Buy things you really love as they’ll be with you for a while.

efore I decided to buy my home, I had rented it for over a year – there’s nothing like try before you buy!’ says Abby. ‘Although I was aware that it needed a lot doing to it, I loved the size of the bedrooms, sitting room and windows – and the walk-in wardrobe just sold it to me. It also had the potential to add character and really make it my own. I moved here after my last home flooded and I lost the majority of my possessions, so it was like starting again with this place. It’s in a great location, too, as it’s close to the beach and the countryside, with lots of little surrounding villages. There’s also a motorway not too far away if I need to commute. I have the best of both worlds really.

Making my mark

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Use a vintage trunk as a coffee table with storage’

As it was an ex-rental, it did need lots of updating, but being a flat, I couldn’t start knocking down walls so I’ve had to make good use of the space that I have. Even though the property wasn’t that old when I bought it, with it being a rental property beforehand, it was a sea of magnolia, with its original carpets and marks and scuffs everywhere – not to mention the terrible flowery wallpaper! I’ve redecorated every inch of this place now and laid new floor coverings, which has taken me around two years to complete. My dad helped me to decorate to begin with and then I got on and did the rest – I’m happy I took on the challenge and finished it myself. A big task was installing the fake chimney breast, which is my newest and latest obsession. I’m so pleased with it – it’s added character and a focal point to what was a large rectangular room before. My dad and I designed the whole thing and I upcycled the surround. It’s

solid oak so I prepped it and painted it white to match the room Luckily there weren’t too many nasty surprises along the way, as the property itself was sound, and one of the advantages of renting the place first was that I got to know the property and area before I fully committed to owning it. I got to see what looked good where and so, when it was finally all mine, I knew exactly how I wanted it. One thing I did realise was that things always take much longer than you think they will! I sometimes get impatient and want everything completed super-quickly but these things take time and it’s all worth it in the end.

Honing my style I thought very clearly about how I could use each space to get the most from it. I love entertaining, so a dining table was very important to me, and I knew the sitting room was big enough to accommodate one. Take some of your favourite foliage – Abby used eucalyptus – and trim a few stems to frame.

‘I love Abby’s use of vintage and upcycling, especially the trunk used as a coffee table. Footstools with a tray on top also make great coffee tables.’

Place the stems on greaseproof paper, using enough to fold over the leaves. Then place beneath heavy books to press.

Choose a background – a blank piece of card, wallpaper or gift wrap – and cut to fit the frame. Arrange the leaves on the background to your liking, lightly coat with 3M Spray Mount and stick in position. Once dry, place in the frame.

and the dining space. This is my favourite room – with the huge bay windows and chimney, it has so much character and is so light, airy and relaxing. Like everything else in my home, the furniture is a real mix of old, really old and new. I love an upcycle project and have a vintage Forties sideboard in my sitting room that I’ve revamped, and it only cost £20 from a charity shop. I love something which has a story, and something I can bring a new lease of life to. On the other hand, my bedroom chest of drawers is from Ikea. I like a minimalistic look – everything has a place and I like to keep it there. I like what I like and luckily what I tend to love and buy works well together.

‘CHOOSE WHITE FURNITURE AND BEDLINEN TO CREATE A LIGHT AND AIRY LOOK IN THE BEDROOM’ have a wonderful one. I love spending time with my young nieces and nephews at Christmas, as it brings back so many magical and happy memories from when my sister and I were little. Decorating the flat is all part of the excitement, and it makes my home feel super-cosy once the tree is up. I love seeing seasonal splashes of red at Christmas, as it’s just so festive. However, I don’t feel red is very me, so I tend to stick to quite neutral rustic and Scandilook decorations, which are more my style. I use vintage-look, ornate baubles to add an elegant feel, rather than using colour in my Christmas look. My tree

baubles are a mix that I’ve found in garden centres and high-street shops, and added to over the years But as much as I love the festive season, once Boxing Day is over I’m more than happy for the tree to come down so I can clean and have back my home that I’ve put so much time, effort and love into.’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Lauren Seager, 56. I live with my husband Kevin, 54, and youngest daughter Amelia, 27. MY HOME A three-bedroom Sixties semi-detached in Buckinghamshire. We moved here in January 2015. WHEN I MOVED IN Nothing had been touched for decades and the wiring and boiler were on their last legs. The layout didn’t work, there was a hideous fake stone fireplace in the sitting room, a horrible old bathroom and scruffy carpets. AND NOW We’ve extended the kitchen into a bright, sociable hub. Every room has been redecorated in my favourite neutral palette. We’ve got a lovely new bathroom, and we’ve added a shower room. STYLE TIP In the evenings, switch on lamps to create a soft, cosy glow.

two DOORS DOWN’ Lauren turned a challenging doerupper into a chic family home and became neighbours with her sister at the same time

I

’ve lived in this area most of my life and I grew up with my parents and sister, Lisa, in one of these houses,’ says Lauren. ‘Lisa still lives there with her husband and family, so when I discovered the house two doors down was on the market, I was so excited. I’d always wanted to move back here with my husband Kevin. I knew it could be an amazing home for us and I just had to have it. Kevin never actually viewed the house – he knew it was my dream home, so he was happy to go along with it, but he had quite a shock on moving-in day, when he saw how much work was needed. The house was tired, old-fashioned and in a sad state. It had been extended at the back, but just on one side, adding a dining room off the sitting room. The kitchen was small and very basic, and the bathroom had awful yellow and black tiled walls. Upstairs, the bedrooms were dull and dated. There was a huge amount to do, but I set a budget, and a target of a year to get everything finished.

Joining things up IDEA TO STEAL ‘Instead of a coffee table, pick a padded footstool for a softer, cosier feel’

I knew from day one that we’d extend the kitchen outwards to join up with the dining room and make a big, open-plan area across the back of the house. We all love spending time together as a family, so space for adults and children to congregate and chill was top of my wish list. I chose an orangery-style glass roof, so there’s masses of light, plus doors out to the patio. At the same time, we moved the door to the garden into the kitchen, so you now have a clear sightline from the hall right through to the back garden. The work wasn’t too disruptive, as we could still use the old kitchen. Knocking through was the final stage and that

was really exciting. It was great seeing my fabulous new space for the first time.

Blessing in disguise I planned the kitchen layout myself and chose everything from a local company. I wanted deep pan drawers, a boilingwater tap and two ovens for entertaining. I thought I’d got a fantastic deal, but it was actually too good to be true – at the last minute, I found out that the worktops had been underpriced. I had to choose an alternative quickly, and ended up choosing different cupboards as well, but I’m so glad I did. The cappuccino colour scheme I’d originally gone for would have looked really dreary. Instead, I’ve now got off-white cabinets and gorgeous, sparkly, pale grey worktops, so it feels so light.

Lots of DIY Although the kitchen extension was the biggest project, an upstairs shower was also one of my must haves, as the only bathroom is downstairs. We fitted a neat little shower room into the eaves in our daughter Amelia’s bedroom, where

‘It’s not always easy to stick to a budget, so Lauren has cleverly made the most of the help available to save on installation fees and materials.’

‘USE OFFCUTS OF TIMBER TO MAKE SHELVES AS WE HAVE IN OUR KITCHEN – THEY COST NEXT TO NOTHING AND ADD A RELAXED COUNTRY FEEL’ there was just a wasted space before. A plumber installed it, but Kevin and my brother-in-law Andy tackled the tiling and everything else. To save money, we tried to do as much of the renovation work as we could ourselves. Kevin and I painted and wallpapered, and he laid laminate floors and built the wood-panelled feature wall in the sitting room, with Andy’s help. I get lots of inspiration online, and I spotted that idea on Pinterest when I was looking for a way to disguise the fireplace. It looks really smart, yet the wood only cost around £200. Even so, we still went over the original budget, and my timescale of a year turned into eighteen months. I hadn’t anticipated that we’d need to re-wire the house, and we had to get a modern boiler and new windows and doors,

too. Those were essentials, but there’s not much to see for the expense.

Neutral territory We brought some furniture from our old home, but I’ve replaced a lot since moving here. The sitting room sofas were a big investment, but they’re really comfy and the putty-coloured, linen-type fabric is right up my street. Neutrals are always my go-to palette. I’m not really one for strong colour, but I love all shades of grey, taupe and cream and I tend to stick to those. I think it helps create a sense of flow from one room to the next. Style-wise, I’m definitely traditional, and I like symmetry, clean, simple lines, and strong statement items. I’m happy to mix things up, because I want an individual look, and if something catches my eye,

Either use a long branch, which should be completely dry, or source a long piece of wood. Lauren used a curtain pole, but even a mop handle would work. To disguise the wood, cover it by wrapping faux leafy garlands around the pole. You can fill in any gaps with real evergreen foliage. Attach two or three screw hooks or screw eyes into the ceiling – how many you need will depend on the weight of your pole, with the greenery and decorations included. Tie the same number of lengths of twine as the number of hooks around the pole, and then suspend it above a table. Using fishing wire or decorative ribbon, hang baubles from your pole. For a bigger impact, vary the sizes and heights of the baubles.

‘FIT A NEAT LITTLE SHOWER ROOM INTO THE EAVES OF A BEDROOM – IT’S ONLY WASTED SPACE OTHERWISE’ I’ll get it. There are a few vintage pieces and some painted charity-shop finds alongside my high-street buys. My favourite shops are HomeSense and Sainsbury’s Home for their fabulous accessories, and I source a lot online, which is convenient as I work full time. I’m quite a bargain-hunter, so I search the internet for the best prices, or wait for the sales. My hall wallpaper was a half-price deal from Laura Ashley, and I usually pick up a few new Christmas decorations in January when they’re reduced, and squirrel them away until December.

Family festivities I absolutely love Christmas and I put festive touches in every room – even the bathroom! We have a tree in the dining room and another in the sitting room and I like having a few fun bits and pieces around as well as the more elegant decorations. We always celebrate with my sister Lisa and all our children and grandchildren, and everyone loves coming here. It’s a real family home.’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Sharron Blake Allan, 43. I live with my husband David, 44, and our son Elijah, 13. Our eldest son Ethan is in the Navy. MY HOME A three-bedroom detached house, built in 2005 in Ramsgate, Kent. We’re the first people to live in the house. WHEN WE BOUGHT IT The house was a bland, magnolia shell. There were no decorative touches and the kitchen was poorly laid out. AND NOW We’ve rearranged the kitchen as a sociable kitchen-diner and replaced the previous cheap bathroom with a more luxurious suite. The interiors are all grey and neutral with clean, simple lines. STYLE TIP It’s worth spending a bit of money on one or two wow-factor accessories to lift a room.

hristmas is an extra-special time for us, as it’s also our son Elijah’s birthday,’ says Sharron. ‘He was born in this house on Christmas Eve, just a few weeks after we moved in. My husband David and I had been renting before that, after a year of travelling with our eldest son Ethan, who was six. We were thinking about buying a doer-upper, but everything changed when we realised we were expecting. The pressure was on to get settled and I knew life with a small baby would be much easier if we weren’t renovating as well. Still, I didn’t really want a bland, boxy new build and I was hoping for something a bit out of the ordinary. A friend told me about a one-off house that had just been completed. It had the space we wanted, and was in an area that we knew and liked. As time was definitely not on our side, we went for it.

Personal touch The layout was great and we loved the light and the big doors from the sitting room out to the garden. On the downside, the house felt quite bare, with wall-to-wall magnolia, and laminate floors. The kitchen was awkwardly designed and lacked a family-friendly dining area, and the bathroom fixtures weren’t what I’d have chosen. But there was nothing we couldn’t live with in the short term. I was keen to make it more homely, so first we laid carpets, then friends helped us paint the walls, just to add some colour and personality before baby Elijah arrived. But I knew the house wouldn’t stay like that once we got settled.

From bland to bold Since then, both boys have grown up and our home has evolved hugely, as I do change things around quite

I like my home to have a consistent look flowing from one room to another. Most of the walls are white and I’ve connected the kitchen to the hall using the same wallpaper in different hues. I’ve also incorporated various materials, from wood to metal, and I’m a big fan of house plants, too. Lots of my artwork features birds, leaves and feathers, so there’s a nature-inspired theme running through the house.

we are. I use high street shops like Ikea and Habitat for good-value basics, but then I layer on unusual accessories that I haven’t seen anywhere else. I shop online, with crafters and in small independent boutiques and I’m always on the lookout for fun items that will get people talking. One of my favourites is the cabinet in the hall, which is old furniture from a school. I love interesting lighting, too, especially vintage-style designs, like the star-shaped metal fairground light from Hurn & Hurn in my sitting room, and our bedside lights, which hang on fabric-covered flexes.

Good skill set As the house’s style changes quite often, David and I do as much DIY as we can. We’ve tackled painting and wallpapering, and I’ve upcycled a few small pieces of furniture, like the bedroom cabinets and chest of drawers. They were made

To make the base, cut a section of a log, making sure it’s level. For the centre, use a thin piece of dowel, around 40cm long. Drill a hole into the base the same diameter as the dowel, put glue around the piece and insert. Collect twigs in varied sizes, or thicker dowels. Cut from large to small sizes, starting at 20-25cm. IDEA TO STEAL ‘Get a clean and simple look with blinds instead of curtains’

ED ‘LAYER A MIX OF COLOUR, VIBRANT PRINT AND TEXTUR MATERIALS TO ADD INTEREST TO A NEUTRAL SCHEME’ from an orangey pine, but I updated them with a tester pot of paint. We redesigned the kitchen and David fitted the units. He’s a plumber, so he installed a new bathroom as the original one was quite cheap. We haven’t altered the layout, but we’ve replaced the tiles and sanitaryware twice, as the boys have grown up and my taste has moved on. The new bathroom has a contemporary edge, with a chunky, square bath and grey, textured wall tiles, tying in with the smart feel of the rest of the home.

House of fun We enjoy entertaining and having friends here now. It took a while to work out a

58 | DECEMBER 2018

sociable layout for the sitting room, but we finally have plenty of seating and the sofas are at right angles, so it flows well. We prioritised sorting out the kitchen first because when we arrived, there were lots of cupboards in a U-shape at the opposite end from the window, and only enough space for a small table. It didn’t work for us as a family, or for a gathering, so we completely altered it. I chose plain white cabinets that don’t feel intrusive. We put them along one side, so it feels like a social space. The new plan meant there was room for a 10-seater dining table, which is perfect for a big party. I’ll probably start thinking about refreshing the look in the

next year or so, but with white kitchen cupboards, I can redecorate, introduce new colours, or even change the flooring, and everything will still work. Christmas is always a really busy time for us, but it’s also a lot of fun. Friends and family drop in, and we usually have a birthday party for Elijah. This house is great for entertaining now, and that’s exactly how we wanted it.’

A modern black fireplace with roaring flames creates a cosy feel

Combine geometric patterns and touches of gold with monochrome and green for a striking, jewel-rich look. GO FOR A BOLD BACKGROUND A vibrant backdrop painted in emerald green sets the tone for a bold living room scheme. LIMIT YOUR COLOUR PALETTE Choose simple mono furnishings including white upholstery (if you

don’t have children or pets!) contrasted with black metal and brushed gold accessories. LAYER UP PATTERN Go for textiles featuring monochrome geometric designs and luxe fabrics such as velvet. KEEP FLOORS LIGHT A light carpet prevents the look becoming too enclosed. Lift with a bold chevron rug.

‘Green with gold creates an opulent, modern look. Don’t restrict yourself to just bright gold, as rose gold and pale gold will also work well.’

Pick an enchanting faux frosted tree

the STYLE RULES Dress a feminine scheme with sugar almond shades Set an enchanting wintry scene by teaming pretty blush tones with wood and metallics. GO FOR GLAMOUR Powder-pink wallpaper with a subtle gold pattern creates a feminine look. Stop it feeling twee by painting the fireplace and skirting boards in white.

the STYLE RULES Blend global patterns in muted colours Take your cue from Scandi folk art for a rustic seasonal scheme updated with clashing prints MIX AND MATCH MOTIFS This look is a riot of pattern. Block prints and motifs featuring flora and fauna have a classic folky feel, but don’t be afraid to mix in Ikat and Fair Isle elements. CREATE A LODGE LOOK White wood panelling on walls has a ski

lodge look. Add colour by painting a third of the wall deep red. TAKE ON TEXTURE Pile up throws and cushions in tactile knits and faux fur to cuddle up under. Stick to a Scandi scheme of blue, red and grey with fresh white accents. GET CRAFTING Adorn your home with a mix of crafted decs. Hang paper garlands, painted baubles and home-sewn stockings.

the STYLE RULES Indulge in hues of amethyst, emerald and sapphire Go for a maximalist scheme of jewel shades, cool metallics and touch-me textiles. GO DEEP ON WALLS Teal walls have a cosseting feel that’s warm and welcoming during dark winter months. PICK LUXE FABRICS Treat yourself to upholstery

the STYLE RULES Mix soft greens with natural textures

Stop this look feeling flat by selecting two or three shades of green that are close to each other on the colour chart

Create an up-to-date seasonal scheme by mixing botanical shades, foliage and gold pieces. PAINT IN SOFT GREENS Indulge in a palette of fern and sage, adding depth with eucalyptus and moss hues. For a feel of continuity, paint walls and doors the same shade. PICK RUSTIC TEXTURES Go for Shaker-style furnishings in natural wood and continue the rustic

ambience with organic textures like seagrass and unpressed linen. GO FOR GOLD For a modern festive feel, introduce geometric decs in gold, plus mismatched baubles in mixed shades of green. FAKE FLAGSTONE FLOORING A natural stone floor is a striking feature in kitchens and dining areas. For a cheaper alternative, try a stone-effect vinyl.

‘Forget the traditional fir arrangements and bring the softer side of nature into your festive decor with a wreath made of eucalyptus.’

Try a wood-effect wall for a ski lodge look

the STYLE RULES Take influence from classic Nordic colours Marry folky motifs with contemporary graphic prints and subtle metallics. STICK TO NEUTRALS This look is based on a Scandi palette of snowy white and cream. Go for understated wallpaper featuring delicate branches with frosty silver highlights.

USE TRAD PATTERN Embrace classic Nordic folk art motifs like deer and snowflakes in red and white. Go modern with bold designs and simple stripes. KEEP FLOORING LIGHT Ensure the scheme remains light and bright by picking a neutral carpet and a chunky woven rug.

Hang a wall tree

Perfect if you have a blank wall to fill or don’t have space for a tree. Decorate it with baubles, garlands and lights, hang treats from it advent-style, or even use to hang cards from mini pegs.

For a simple place setting that doubles up as a gift, wrap up a luxury bar of chocolate and attach a label stamped with your guest’s name. Just ask them to wait until after dinner before they unwrap!

Make a festive centrepiece

Use foliage and fresh roses to cover a water-soaked oasis ring, bought from a florist’s or craft shop. Then decorate with pinecones and mini baubles and pop a pillar candle in the centre. Or cheat the look with a faux wreath instead.

14

Choose Scandi style

For a classic festive look, stick to a simple scheme of reds and white that’s brimming with Christmas spirit. Mix Fair Isle-style knits with country checks and block prints, and for a rustic finish, use pinecone garlands, kraft paper-wrapped gifts and berry covered wreaths.

‘It’s got a new

RETRO LOOK ‘This iconic phone adds another splash of colour to the room and I love its retro look’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Cynthia Hyams, 45, and I live with my husband Matthew, 52, and our son Henry, five, in a two-bedroom Victorian terrace in Middlesex. We bought it in 2017. MY CHALLENGE The sitting room looked dated and lifeless. The walls were painted cream and the decor was bland, especially the wooden fireplace surround. MY WISH LIST I wanted to create a cosy space that felt warm and welcoming for us and our visitors. Another challenge was to create a focal point and the shutters helped to achieve that.

NEW LIFE ‘We inherited the wood flooring and it seemed lifeless until we brought the furniture into the room – now I love it’

O

ver the years, we’ve renovated other properties with the goal of building up enough money to eventually buy and do up our “forever” home – and this is it,’ says Cynthia. ‘We’d hoped to complete our sitting room by Christmas last year but, unfortunately, we missed our deadline. Thankfully, though, it’s now finished and we’re looking forward to enjoying a relaxing time together in our home this year. When we bought this house, there was something forlorn-looking about the sitting room. It had so much potential that wasn’t being exploited. We were confident that a few simple tasks like a lick of paint on the pallid walls and shelves, plus painting the wooden fire surround would transform the room – so that’s exactly what we did. My husband Matthew is a builder, so he’s used to renovating and decorating houses, while I love styling up rooms, so we did everything ourselves. I’ve always enjoyed reading homes magazines and find Pinterest very useful, so I combined inspiration from both and then added my own twist in terms of style.

The starting point was ordering the shutters from Plantation Shutters. We chose shutters not just because they’re so functional – they also make a stunning focal point, and give the room a finished look. They’re easy to clean and maintain as well. Whether you have a period house or modern build, shutters always complement a room, and inject personal style – I absolutely love them. Once the shutters were fitted, we painted the walls, shelves and undercoated the wooden fire surround. The surround is actually painted in Dulux’s Dark Grey undercoat, but the colour worked so well that we decided not

Practical matters

TO THE LETTER ‘This light-up H for Henry stays up on the shelf all year round’

90 | DECEMBER 2018

I wanted a stylish yet minimal look, as Henry plays with his toys in here every day. It was important to have enough floor space, which meant having to tuck furniture into alcoves or against the walls. The navy blue footstool serves many purposes – as a coffee table in the day when friends are over, a relaxing footstool in the evening or as extra seating. The flooring came with the house. Initially, I didn’t like it, but my feelings changed when we added our furniture. There’s something about the shade

of grey of the sofa that really helped to bring the flooring back to life – now, it looks completely different and much more suitable for the room. The space lends itself so much to the Christmas period, which is so much fun, especially with Henry. The excitement of dressing the room, which he loves helping with, and his sense of anticipation as he waits for his presents from Father Christmas, make for a truly magical time.’

ABOUT ME I’m Katrina Klijn, 51, a retail manager. I live with my husband Darren Roberts, 48, an electrical supervisor, and our two dogs and two cats. Our home is a Sixties former police house in Holyhead, North Wales. We’ve lived here since August 2014. MY CHALLENGE I was keen to give the original kitchen an industrial café feel, but we couldn’t afford a complete overhaul. So I took my time to come up with ideas that could transform the space by using what was already there. MY WISH LIST I wanted to give the space a complete update, change the colour of the cabinets and make the dining area feel like a part of the kitchen.

y husband Darren and I had been living on an old RAF base for a few years with a view to emigrate to Australia,’ says Katrina. ‘However, in the end, the move was just too big, so we came up with a new plan. I was disappointed, but knew it was for the best in the long run. We decided to invest our time and money in finding a forever home in the UK. After seeing this place, we knew it would be a long-term project, but it had loads of potential. However, we were on such a tight budget that we didn’t think we could afford it. Then the owners dropped the price and we agreed we’d be fools not to go for it. My first thoughts were that the house needed a lot of cosmetic work, but it was solid, well laid out and certainly habitable enough for a while, so we weren’t in any particular hurry.

‘Paint a dividing wall in blackboard paint to zone off an open-plan space and add interest’

I knew the kitchen-diner would be an important living space for us and in my dreams, I wanted to rip the tiles off, change the worktops and completely start again. But we’d already stretched ourselves financially, buying the house, so that was just not a possibility. The cabinets were solid and the space was well designed, so we lived with it for a couple of years while I made plans to upcycle the room rather than trash it. I’m addicted to Instagram and get loads of inspiration from Pinterest. I also buy homes magazines regularly, so I was surrounded by great ideas. I narrowed them down and decided to base the look around my Welsh dresser, which I bought for £10, and create a coffee-shop vibe. The kitchen was white and quite country looking, which isn’t my style at all, so I set myself a budget of £150 and started thinking

Cabinet reshuffle

Replace door handles on cabinets – polished brass works well against dark colours. Try a bar design for a modern finish. Paint a blackboard wall to create a message hub. No wall space? A plain door works, too. Remove cupboard doors to make display shelves. Create an illusion by painting the back of the cupboard the same hue as the wall.

96 | DECEMBER 2018

The worktops, wall tiles and flooring were in good condition, but the cabinet doors were in a state. I tackled them first, working on three doors at a time in the kitchen. That allowed us to continue using the space without too much chaos. The doors were made of MDF and covered in a plastic coating, which had started to peel off around the edges. It looked as though the previous owners tried to fix them with glue, which had

turned green over time. I used a hot-air gun to melt the glue and the coating peeled off quite easily. Then I sanded the doors. I went with a chalk paint, which was the cheapest and quickest option as it dries really quickly. So I was able to paint and seal the doors in a single day. Unfortunately, I hurt my back halfway through the process, which held things up for a few days. But I managed to get all the units finished in just two weeks.

Finishing fun Working on the dining area was my favourite part. I painted the walls a pale

PAINTED KITCHEN

Katrina’s choice:

PAINTED UNITS

Save on the cost of replacing a tired kitchen by refreshing it with paint

Prep the cupboards Start by carefully removing the door handles and drawer knobs from all of the cabinets and putting them to one side. Then, use masking tape to cover the hinges as well as the edges of any glass panels, to avoid unwanted paint marks. Lay dust sheets over the worksurfaces and the floor.

Clean the surfaces Using a strong soapy solution (or sugar soap for wooden units) and a cloth, wipe down the front and edges of each cabinet thoroughly to remove any grease and built-up grime. Repeat twice to make sure you’re left with a smooth canvas to work

Where to buy her Style Get this high-end look straight off the shelf! WICKES Take a look at the Milton kitchen in Midnight for a traditional design in a dark colour. on and wipe off any residue with a clean, damp cloth.

Smooth the wood If you’re working on wooden cupboards, you’ll need to sand the surface of the door and edges using a fine-grade sandpaper. Don’t sand all the way to the bare wood – just a light rub all over will do the trick and provide a good surface for the paint to grip to. If your cabinets are made from a high-gloss laminate, skip this step completely.

Apply a base coat Depending on the surface of your units, apply either a wood or melamine primer to prepare them for painting. Use a small roller to apply this, rather than a brush, to ensure an even finish and to avoid any drip marks. Some specialist cupboard paints don’t require a primer to be used, so check which type you have first.

‘A freestanding ON THE SHELF ‘Quirky tiered shelving is great for housing mini plant pots and scented candles’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Jessica West, 30, a neonatal nurse, and I live in a renovated four-bedroom semi-detached home in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, with my husband Mitchell, 32, a construction manager, and our house rabbit Teddy. We bought the house in May 2016 and in March 2017 we finally moved in, after all the renovations were complete. MY CHALLENGE The bathroom was originally downstairs so we built a side extension and moved it upstairs. MY WISH LIST I wanted a modern, freestanding bath big enough to relax in and gorgeous patterned floor tiles that I’d seen on Instagram.

M

y husband Mitchell and I bought this house with the aim to do the whole place up – it’s the third home we’ve renovated in four years,’ says Jessica. ‘After spending months working on the rest of the house, next on our list was the bathroom. We’d had a single-storey side extension built so we could move the bathroom upstairs, as the house had a small bathroom downstairs next to the kitchen, which was awful. The idea of going downstairs each morning to wash wasn’t appealing so when drawing up the plans, it was top priority that the bathroom be moved. At that time, we’d decided that this would just be a house we’d renovate to sell on and knew that an upstairs bathroom would be a good selling point.

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Wall planters are perfect for adding foliage and plants to any room, especially in the bathroom’

My vision I love all the planning when decorating a room and use Instagram and Pinterest for ideas. I knew I wanted a freestanding bath and it had to be modern – I didn’t want the classic roll-top as it’s not really my style. I found this gorgeous oval shape online, which I knew would be perfect. Mitch was concerned that it would look too big but we decided to sit it at an angle and that everything else would just have to fit around it.

walk-in shower cubicle which also helped with space issues. I found these amazing floor tiles at B&Q, which we then based the colour scheme around. I was worried they might be a bit too much, but they are quite soft in colour so don’t overpower the room. Mitch has been hands on with every build and fitted the wall and floor tiles – YouTube is a great place to learn how to do this, too.

‘I wasn’t sure whether to have a cabinet above the sink, but instead we went for a large metal mirror and wall lighting’

Styling the room I decided to be bold and painted the walls dark grey, which contrasts nicely with the metro-style wall tiles, and the colour really picked up the grey in the floor tiles. Because of the size of the bath, we used a piece of old scaffolding board as a bath rack. I sanded it and oiled it so it’s water resistant – it’s the perfect place for my book and glass of wine. I found an old mirrored freestanding shelf unit which fits perfectly by the shower. I really like dark jewel green tones too, so I introduced this with a few towels which seemed to bring the room to life. I’m over the moon with the result – it’s perfect. We may have bought this place as a project, but now it’s finished, we’ve fallen in love with it and have no plans to move any time soon!’

BATHROOM LIGHTS

Jessica’s choice:

ELEGANT LIGHT FITTINGS Want your bathroom lights to be both safe and stylish? Here’s all you need to know…

Make a plan Think about when you use the bathroom and how much natural daylight there is. Do you want mood lighting? Where will task lights be most helpful? Assess your needs, then make a lighting plan.

Safety first Gen up on IP ratings to stay safe. The bathroom is split into zones, with each one having a required IP rating (Google ‘bathroom lighting zones’ for a diagram). Most suspended bathroom light fittings, including pendants, are rated IP44 for use within zone 2, which is an area stretching 0.6m outside the perimeter

BEST FOR… TRAD STYLING Jim Lawrence has a seriously classy range of IP-rated lighting, including period-style sconce designs, Art Deco inspired shapes and timeless glass globe pendants in antiqued finishes.

TOP ADVICE Mr Light is the design professional’s go-to lighting guru. It stocks a huge range of IP44 rated lighting, as well as IP65 fittings for showers and wet rooms.

SAFE INSTALLS Toptradespeople.co.uk is the place to go to fulfil Part P of the Building Regulations, which states that all bathroom electrical work must be carried out by a competent person.

of the bath to a height of 2.25m from the floor, and at least 60cm from any taps.

Pendant problems These can be tricky. Unless the flex is very short, you’ll need a pendant with a minimum rating of IP65. If you have very high ceilings, it may sit outside all zones, so you can use any fitting. But steam could be a problem, so most installers recommend an IP44 fitting.

A vintage choice Around 60% of antique lights can be converted to bathroom use, according to The English Lamp Company. An IP44 lamp holder will need to be fitted and, in some cases, a new earth wire soldered on. This work should always be carried out by a registered electrician.

Unusual designs

Hotel square single LED light in Chrome, £55, Bathstore

For really striking lights, check out Bathstore and John Lewis, or try the elegant bathroom-safe chandeliers at The Lighting Company. We also love the vintage range at Old School Electric.

Select a switch A light must have a pull cord if it’s inside the bathroom, or a conventional switch can be fitted outside. Always locate the switch near the door so it’s easy to find.

STRIPED GLASS Forum Aquila wall light in Chrome, £29.95, Victorian Plumbing

UPHOLSTERY Revive your sofa and get it looking great again in time for Christmas

1

GET THE VACUUM OUT

Using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum, give the sofa a thorough going over, starting on the seat and back cushions, then concentrating on the arms, sides and base where crumbs and fluff accumulate – switch to the nozzle attachment so you can get into crevices at the back and edges. If it’s a leather sofa, use the softer brush attachment.

SPOT CLEAN STAINS

Before using cleaning products on upholstery, check if it still has its care label attached. W means you can use a water-based cleaner; S or P means no water, use solvents or dry-clean; SW or WS means you can use either a water-based or solvent cleaner or a steam cleaner; X means you shouldn’t use water or detergent as it may damage the fabric – get it professionally cleaned instead.

4

BANISH NASTY NIFFS

Rid the fabric of stale smells or lingering pet odours by sprinkling the sofa with bicarbonate of soda or dry carpet cleaner and leaving it for a couple of hours, or overnight if possible, before vacuuming it off. It will absorb any bad odours and leave the sofa smelling fresh.

5

TO GET RID OF PET HAIR ON YOUR SOFA,WEAR A DAMPENED RUBBER GLOVE AND RUB YOUR HAND OVER THE SURFACE

TRY A STEAM CLEAN

For a deep, all-over clean, try a steam cleaner. High-temperature steam will loosen and dissolve surface dirt and brighten the fabric’s colours, as well as deodorising and sanitising the sofa without using any harsh chemicals. Vacuum first and leave the sofa to air-dry for a couple of hours afterwards.

Use a white cloth and blot the area without rubbing, working from the outside in until the stain has gone. Use a fresh cloth and warm water to blot the area afterwards to remove traces of soap.

SOFTEN THE MOSS Start by soaking the moss in water (this will make it easier to work with) and use it to completely cover the oasis ring. BEGIN PLANTING Remove plants from their pots and start placing them one by one into the oasis ring, securing with pins as you go. Alternate the types of plants for maximum visual impact. SECURE WITH PINS Add a few extra pins to fix your moss around the succulents or alpines, making sure you’ve pushed these firmly into the moss, soil and foam so everything stays in place. FINISHING TOUCHES To make your wreath extra secure, wrap florist wire around it to reduce any movement. Fill any gaps in your planting with pine cones or gold stars to add festive colour. KEEP IT FRESH If you’ve gone for an indoor wreath using succulents, make sure it looks its best by watering it once a week. You can do this by soaking the oasis ring in water and using a misting spray if required. For outdoor alpines, depending on position, mist if and when required to keep them looking fresh.

UPCYCLE A KNIT Give your pre-loved Christmas sweaters a new lease of life by using them to create extra-special festive gifts BUTTON-UP CUSHION YOU WILL NEED Scissors Patterned jumper Chalk Ruler Pins Matching sewing thread Cushion pad Four buttons

This look works just as well on plain cushions, too, and is a lovely personal touch to add to bedrooms or guest rooms

1

Cut through the side seams of the jumper and cut off the sleeves. Cut the shoulder seams to separate the front and back. Use chalk and a ruler to draw horizontal and vertical lines to create two rectangular pieces. The width will be from the smallest part (at the armholes) to the cuffed hem. Cut along these lines. With right sides facing up, lay the two rectangles on the floor with the cuffed hems overlapping. Pin them together. Fold the two short edges to the centre to create a square. Pin, then stitch together, leaving a 2.5cm seam allowance. Position the cuffed hems where you want them to be on the cushion front – this could be to one side or in the centre. With the right sides together, pin and stitch the side seams. Turn the cover right sides out and put the cushion pad inside. Measure and mark the position of the buttonholes, equally spaced on the top cuff. Carefully snip to the length of each button and finish with a basic buttonhole stitch. Then sew the buttons in place on the bottom cuff and fasten to secure the cover.

1

Lay the jumper in front of you, making sure any stripes are level. Use the templates to cut two pieces of each shape, adding a 1.5cm seam allowance all round. Use the ribbed hem as the top of the stocking. With right sides together, pin each foot piece to each leg piece. Stitch the ankle seam, then press open. Lay a piece of felt at the heel, pin in place, then use wool to over stitch it in place. Add a toe piece in the same way. Repeat for the second side. Pin the stocking together with right sides facing, taking care to match the pattern and the edges of the felt. Sew around the outside, leaving a 1.5cm seam allowance, leaving the cuffed top open. Turn right side out, press. Fold over the cuff at the top and thread narrow ribbon in a running stitch pattern at the edge as decoration. Thread on beads and finish by sewing a loop of ribbon to the back seam.

Cut a paper star 10-15cm wide and use this to cut out a star from felt. Pin the felt to the right side of the jumper, centring any pattern in the knit. Sew around the outside of the shape, using a 5mm seam allowance. Leave a small

section (3-4cm) unstitched at the ‘inside’ point of the star. Trim your jumper at about 1cm around its edges, leaving a little more at the opening (in case it frays as you turn). Turn the star right sides out through the hole, fill it with stuffing (use the end of a pencil to help push it into the points), then stitch the hole up. For a decorative finish, use embroidery thread to blanket stitch around the outside of the star. Thread ribbon onto a darning needle to make a hanging loop.

OVENS & COOKERS

Reveal your inner MasterChef with our selection of the latest in hi-tech, high style ovens and freestanding cookers

H

GREAT VALUE

owever big your kitchen, one thing's virtually guaranteed: there will be an oven. To help you find one that suits your budget and the needs of your family we’ve tracked down the finest selection of different models available.

Best all-in-one cooker

Double or single? Single ovens are great if space is tight as they typically slot under-counter or at eye level. Remember you won't be able to cook and use the grill at the same time. Double ovens are good for families, with one large fan oven and a smaller oven with grill. Second ovens tend to be small, so check your cookware will fit before buying.

Conventional or fan cooking?

NO HOT SPOTS

Conventional ovens tend to be found on basic models and have top and bottom heating elements. The top of the oven is usually hotter than the bottom, but it’s good for baking and crisping. Fan ovens are the most popular and for good reason: they circulate heat more evenly so food cooks more quickly. Gas ovens aren’t as popular as they once were, but they heat up very quickly and retain moisture better than electric fan ovens making them a firm favourite with traditional bakers. The top of the oven is always hotter than the bottom.

Freestanding cookers These great-value, all-in-one cooking stations offer a mix of hob and either single or double ovens. Dual fuel is the most popular, featuring a gas hob combined with an electric fan oven.

116 | DECEMBER 2018

Best double oven The perfect oven for lovers of a good Sunday roast, this 71/34L AB-rated double oven (H88.8xW59.4xD55cm) has a super-efficient cooking system known as 3D hotair that lets you cook multiple dishes on three shelves at the same time without worrying about hot or cool spots. We also love the fact the telescopic rails can be placed at any cooking level instead of being fixed like you’ll find on many models. Exceptional value for an all-in-one AA-rated electric oven, grill and gas hob (H90xW60xD60cm) from one of the most respected range-cooker manufacturers, the top 31L cavity can be used as a conventional oven and powerful full-width grill, while the main 59L fan oven takes care of the bulk of the cooking and also offers defrost and dough-proving functions for added flexibility. WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Key features to help you buy the right oven

Best budget cooker Proof you don’t need to spend thousands to get practical features, this affordable A-rated 82L stainless-steel design (H59.5xW59.4xD56.7cm) has touch controls, telescopic shelves, huge capacity and the big bonus of being self-cleaning. The LED programmer is easy to use and the timer means the oven will switch CLEANS off when your food is ready. ITSELF Beko built-in oven BIM32400XP, £419, Ao.com Buy now with Ownable FEATURES 14 cooking functions; enamel interior; full-width grill

CAPACITY 60L used to be considered huge for a single oven, but thanks to thinner, more efficient insulation you can now fit as much as 74L inside. If looking for a double oven, the second cavity is generally between 30L and 35L. LAYOUT Choose a design with multiple shelves to make the most of space. Also, ovens with slide and hide doors give you easy access to what’s cooking and prevents the dreaded oven door burn!

LOOK FOR OVENS WITH MULTIPLE SHELVES TO MAKE THE MOST OF INTERNAL CAPACITY. YOU’LL BE ABLE TO COOK MORE IN A 60L OVEN WITH THREE SHELVES THAN A 67L ONE WITH TWO

HOBS If you’re buying an all-in-one cooker, choose from gas, electric, ceramic and induction rings. Induction and gas offer the fastest heat-up. Induction is by far the safest choice and comes with smart timers and even the ability to boil and simmer automatically.

Best freestanding cooker

FUEL Gas ovens aren’t as popular today and are being replaced by electric options that heat up more quickly and are easier to install and more accurate, plus you can enjoy more such as top/bottom heats and fan grilling.

HUGE OVEN

ENERGY Most main ovens are A rated these days – second ovens and range cookers can be less efficient due to their size but it’s worth buying A+ to save energy. Two A-rated ovens can use different amounts of energy, so look at the kwh/cycle figure before you buy.

Best steam oven A steam oven will help retain the nutrients while cooking vegetables and is gentle on delicate ingredients such as salmon, but by adding fan heat to its 31L, A-rated oven (H45.5xW59.5xD53.7cm), Hotpoint gives you perfectly moist conditions that are great for baking cakes and crusty bread, and even cooking roasts. MS 998 IX H, £769, Hotpoint Buy now with Ownable FEATURES 2L removable water tank for easy top-ups; 10 automatic programmes to help take the guesswork out of steam cooking

EASY CLEANING Enamelcoated oven walls can be wiped clean, while catalytic liners help absorb and break down food spills, which are then burned away during cooking. Pyrolytic cleaning – on top-end designs – burns away any dirt, leaving just ash to wipe up.

Join in and share your home revamps with Style at Home on Instagram @styleathomemag

SMART FEATURES Appconnected appliances (using your home’s wi-fi) offer the ability to adjust the temperature and check on progress from your smartphone. Some can even let you pre-heat the oven before you get home!

FEATURE CHRIS HASLAM

For the price, stylish multifunctional freestanding cookers don’t come much better than this A-rated one (H90xW60xD60cm). It’s great for a time-poor family as it has a four-ring ceramic hob that can be easily wiped clean, while the large 67L main oven and generous 44L second oven with grill offer plenty of space. LOOK WHAT YOU STYLED

What’s not to love about a cute star filled with fairy lights @beside_the_sea?

@emmas_hygge_home’s sitting room looks cosy and fresh all at the same time #stylegoals

At this time of year, it’s all about cups of warm tea in bed, isn’t it @its_all_about_the_house?

This monthwe’reloving

#SAHSTYLISTS

We’ve been crushing on your gorgeous homes – tag your pics on Insta with #SAHstylists and @styleathomemag to join in

Check out how @just_jots has turned a vintage ladder into a stylish wall display

Now the whole SAH team wants a pink dressing table, too @laurenclode

We’d like to snuggle up in this cosy corner of @meet_the_fosters_’s living room

Plenty of Christmas glam table inspiration from @pinkpeonyhome here

Furry slippers? Tick. Real fire? Tick. Flickering candlelight? Tick. Full marks @s.l.f_home

How stylish do @style.your.heart.out’s wardrobes look after some nifty upcyling?
