BIG CHALLENGES FOR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

Hello Friends.

The ultimate goal for the CIOs is to achieve digital transformation for their respective organizations. As we know there are 7 key challenges i.e., Dedicated IT Skills, Change Management, Evolving Customer Needs, Defined Strategy, Budget Constraints, Ineffective Data Management, and Inefficient Business Processes. These 7 challenges are quite aligned with the business objective of the organizations. First challenge is lack of dedicated IT Skills. This is something which is not under the control of the CIOs. Therefore, the leaders need to upgrade and reskill the skillsets of the existing. The second issue is change management. The companies need to develop practice for change management. This is nothing but practice. The third thing the leaders need to keep in mind is how to develop and see the need of the customers are evolving and accordingly plan and create or quire tools for the company to service the customers. Strategy is something which is one of the most important aspects of the CIOs skillsets. Along with

NEXT MONTH SPECIAL

other stake holders of the organization, they need to create short term and long-term strategy and work around that. Budget is always a constrain for IT but if there is a real requirement no CFO or management says no. So, budget constrain is a myth. If a CIO is not getting adequate budget, it means she/he is not able to create a road map and showcase it to the management. Data management and inefficient business process are also equally important. CIOs need to take it seriously. Now how to start. CIOs need to think with digital first as a mindset and share the mindset with others in the group. Second is cloud first should be strategy as moving forward and security should be given utmost importance from the word go. The problem with leadership is that they feel complacent about the skills and information. Of course, they are not wrong because there are overflow of information in the industry. Every now and then there is something or other in the industry trying to educate the leader about their skillsets and understanding. One should not be bothered about this. They should be choosy about the information flow and try to learn as much as possible. Before sign out, I must welcome the CIOs and Leaders to join in our cloud summit where senior CIOs are going to share their cloud journey experience. This event is going to happen on 8th of October at 12 PM.

NEC IRIS Recognition Technology Positioned First in NIST Accuracy Testing

NEC Corporation today declared that its IRIS recognition technology ranked first in the world in the most recent iris recognition technology benchmark test, IREX 10, connected by the globally authoritative U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In this bench mark test, the technology was evaluated with an accuracy rate of 99.5% for “1: N Identification” for images including both among half a million people. NEC also positioned first in the NIST IRIS recognition benchmark test in 2018, as well as the face recognition benchmark test results published in August 2021. In recent years, NEC has capitalized on its leading artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen the performance of its IRIS recognition technology against images with deteriorated quality that often occur in practical situations. This has resulted in a significant improvement in the error rate when compared to previous technologies. NEC plans to use this technology for “walk-

through” IRIS recognition and in combination with face recognition in order to provide highly accurate multimodal biometric authentication. Multimodal biometrics provides high precision results even when face masks caps are worn, and support maintenance of hygienic environments with contactless identification. As these technologies support safe and secure living, NEC anticipates they will used throughout a variety of applications, including payment at stores, access to facilitates, such as data centers that requires high security management, as well as food and pharmaceutical plants, clean rooms, and medical sites that demand strict hygiene control. NEC will capitalize on its portfolio of biometric identification solutions, ‘Bio-Idiom’, which includes face recognition technologies, and ‘NEC the WISE’, the company’s cutting-edge AI technologies, such as video analytics, in order to expand their use for Fin Tech, digital IDs and more.

SECURITY

It’s time to bring in the cybersecurity experts “2021 has been a busy year for cybersecurity professionals so far. With global security incidents such as the Colonial Pipeline and Kaseya cyber-attacks, as well as the Microsoft Exchange data breach, business leaders are recognising that cybersecurity can no longer take a back seat. As remote work models increasingly become popular and the push towards digital transformation intensifies, customers have their hands full as they step up their environments and workloads to the cloud, train staff to operate with new technologies, and simultaneously ensure productivity and profitability. However, having dedicated personnel and resources to constantly monitor the threat landscape can prove to be an expensive and arduous task. This is where managed security services can come to the rescue.” SEPTEMBER 2021   ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

The Top 7 Ways Cyberscammers and Malware Operators Abuse Google Forms, According to Sophos Research

Sophos, a global leader in next-generation cybersecurity, has published research, “Phishing and Malware Actors Abuse Google Forms for Credentials, Data Exfiltration,” describing how cyberattackers – from entry-level scammers to advanced adversaries – abuse Google Forms to implement a wide range of attacks, targeting both organizations and individuals. “The extent to which cyberattackers abuse Google Forms came to light while we were researching how malware abuses encryption to conceal its activities and communications,” said Sean Gallagher, senior threat researcher at Sophos. “Google Forms offer cyberattackers an attractive proposition: the forms are easy to implement and trusted by both organizations and consumers; the traffic to and from the service is secured with Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption so it can’t be easily inspected by defenders; and the whole set up essentially provides a free attack infrastructure.

8 Additional Revenue Streams for Your Business Running a company isn’t always simple, and your cash flow may not always be as flexible – or as good – as you’d want. Diversifying your revenue streams is one way to make more money, and while it may not appear to be something you can do at first glance, it is certainly something worth considering because, if you dig a little deeper, you will most likely discover that you can add revenue streams without too many problems. Here are a few suggestions for generating extra revenue in your existing company. Rent Out Your Property Are you using all of the available space in your present company premises? If not, you could rent part of it out and make a decent living off of it. Many small companies need just a room, or perhaps a portion of a room. It’s difficult for these companies to find suitable premises; they are few and far between. If you have an empty room or space to rent, the owner of a small company may be extremely interested. Can you add shared secretarial services to your rental to make it more appealing, or perhaps shared kitchen space? You could even rent out the space on an as-needed basis for meetings. If you think carefully about who you rent to, there could also be opportunities to cross-promote and help one another in business.

Akamai to Obtain Guardicore to Expand Its Zero Trust Solutions to Help Stop Ransomware Akamai Technologies, the world’s most trusted solution to power and protect digital experiences, today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Tel Aviv, Israel-based Guardicore. By adding Guardicore’s micro-segmentation solution into Akamai’s extensive Zero Trust security portfolio, Akamai will be uniquely suited to provide comprehensive protections to the enterprise, defending against threat actors and the spread of malware and ransomware. Guardicore’s micro-segmentation solution is designed to limit user access to only those applications that are authorized to communicate with each other. By denying communication as the default, the threat surface and risk exposure are drastically reduced, thereby limiting the spread of malware and protecting the flow of enterprise data across 12 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD  SEPTEMBER 2021

the network. This protection extends beyond the data center to the cloud, including bare metal, virtual machines and containers. Tom Leighton, chief executive officer and co-founder, Akamai Technologies, said “Given the recent surge in ransomware attacks and increasingly stringent compliance regulations, investing in technologies to reduce the spread of malware has become mission critical,” Akamai Technologies. “By adding Guardicore’s leading micro-segmentation products to Akamai’s comprehensive portfolio of Zero Trust solutions, we believe Akamai will be able to provide the most effective way to combat ransomware on the market today.”

DIGEST ZERO CERTAINTY APPROACH TO INDUSTRY’S BROADEST CYBERSECURITY PLATFORM Zero certainty is a term frequently touted but rarely implemented authentically by cybersecurity providers. Trend Micro Incorporated is changing that with the full release of its risk insights capability following a beta test with 3,500 enterprises. The industry’s broadest Zero Trust risk assessment solution now forms a critical component of Trend Micro’s unified cybersecurity platform. Joel Stradling, Research Director European Security & Privacy, IDC, said “Some of the downsides of digital transformation projects are legacy security systems causing issues and an almost unmanageable expansion of complexity,” “To compound this, the threat landscape is increasingly sophisticated making defense strategies similarly complex. DIGICERT 2021 ANNOUNCE OF PKI AUTOMATION SURVEY FINDS APAC COMPANIES ARE SCUFFLING WITH RELIANCE ON MANUAL PROCESSES AMID GROWING VOLUME OF DIGITAL CERTIFICATES DigiCert the world’s foremost provider of TLS/SSL, IoT and other PKI solutions, today released its 2021 State of PKI Automation survey that shows the typical enterprise in Asia Pacific (APAC) now manages over 40,000 publicly and privately trusted PKI certificates. Manually managing this volume of certificates can lead to costly outages if not handled correctly, as evidenced by the finding that two-thirds have experienced outages caused by certificates expiring unexpectedly. More than one third (35%) have experienced five to six such outages in the past six months alone, as compared to the 25% global average. FORTINET TAKE UP ITS SECURE SD-WAN MOMENTUM WITH NEW GLOBAL SERVICE PROVIDERS Fortinet today declared six new service providers have selected Fortinet Secure SD-WAN to differentiate their business and deliver new value-added services to customers. These six organizations, including Tata Teleservices, Comcast Business, Granite Telecommunications, C&W Business Panama, Acuative and 1&1 Versatel, are expanding their customer offerings powered by Fortinet Secure SD-WAN, continuing Fortinet’s momentum with an existing and expanding list of service providers (SPs). Vishal Rally, Senior Vice-President, Product and Commercial at Tata Teleservices, said “There is an emerging need to transform networks at scale without compromising security.

ing customers. Changing – or adding to – your product line demonstrates that you are up to date with current trends and understand what your consumers want. Products With Added Value Whatever you offer, there will be something to sell beside it that compliments it and adds value to the purchase. If you go out and clean people’s carpets, for example, you might offer stain removal products. You can sell brushes and combs if you groom dogs. If you sell paintings, why not include frames or perhaps a framing workshop? Don’t offer anything that will replace what you’re doing; instead, sell something that will allow your clients to help themselves in between your visits. This can make a significant difference in terms of revenue and how well your business is perceived.

BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM

Running a company isn’t always simple, and your cash flow may not always be as flexible – or as good – as you’d want. Can you add shared

secretarial services to your rental to make it more appealing, or perhaps shared kitchen space? You could even rent out the space on an as-needed basis for meetings. If you think carefully about who you rent to, there could also be opportunities to cross-promote and help one another in business. Online Sales If you don’t already have an online store, starting one and selling online is a fantastic way to increase your sales and bottom line. You don’t even need to modify or build a new website; you can sell on sites like eBay and Amazon Marketplace for a fraction of the price. Holding stock is also unnecessary since you can simply purchase what you need when someone makes an order. Additional Products Rather than finding new customers to purchase the same goods and services, it is usually less expensive to find additional items to offer to exist-

Work As A Subcontractor Have you considered becoming a subcontractor if you have marketable, skilled employees that other businesses might use? This could be a fantastic way to cover any holes in your schedule and keep your workers active at all times. It doesn’t even have to be individuals who work in construction or other physically demanding occupations. Excellent managers, for example, can go and help elsewhere on an ad-hoc basis. Take care to thoroughly screen each request for a subcontractor, as you don’t want to end up lending out valuable workers to a direct rival. Also, make sure that you charge more than your current day rate; otherwise, by the time you’ve paid your employee, you won’t have earned any profit, rendering the exercise useless.

est level of security for emails and SaaS collaboration suites. Avanan will integrate into the Check Point Infinity consolidated architecture to deliver the world’s most secure email security offering. Utilizing patented technology designed and built for cloud email environments, this will be the only unified solution in the market to protect remote workforce from malicious files, URLs and Phishing across email, collaboration suites, web, network, and endpoint. Email technologies have evolved and transitioned from on premise solutions to the cloud. With 95% of cyber-attacks targeting enterprise networks are caused by successful spear phishing,

the cloud email threat landscape has never been wider. The amount of phishing attacks doubled in 2020, with every Microsoft Office 365 user in the world attacked at least once. The COVID-19 pandemic and the move to remote work continue to fuel the adoption of cloud office systems and the use of other collaboration suites beyond email (e.g. Teams, Slack, OneDrive), expanding users’ exposure to cyber-attacks even more. This expanded threat landscape requires a new approach to email security since conventional solutions built for on-premises email have failed to adapt for the cloud. Legacy email solutions (SEG) impair native security tools, are blind to cloud threats, and cannot protect collaboration suites. Avanan, founded in 2015, is the world’s fastest growing cloud-email security vendor. The company developed a patented application-programming interface (API) solution to stop email threats before arriving to the inbox (inline), for both internal and external emails using AI based engines. With over 100 employees, it protects more than 5000 customers and over 2.5 million inboxes. The solution deploys in minutes like an app and is configured in a few clicks. “More and more businesses are moving to cloud-email platforms and with email becoming a major channel to launch devastating cyber-attacks, this acquisition represents a huge potential as organizations are looking for a new approach to email and collaboration suite security,” said Dr. Dorit Dor, Check Point’s Chief Product Officer. “By integrating Avanan into Check Point Infinity, organizations will be able to modernize legacy solutions with email security as-a-service and protect cloud email and collaboration suites from the most sophisticated attacks. We’ve been using the Avanan technology as an OEM for the last 3 years and I am confident that with this new addition, customers will enjoy the best email security with the best cyber security capabilities.” “Avanan’s journey to reinvent email security is starting a whole new chapter. By merging with Check Point Software, we are combining Avanan’s best in class A.I. that catches the sophisticated email-borne attacks everyone else misses, with Check Point Software’s unparalleled security capabilities and threat intelligence,” says Gil Friedrich, CEO and co-founder of Avanan. “With Check Point Software’s global organization, we plan to bring our joint solution to all organizations, of all sizes and geographies, to anyone that needs better security for their email and collaboration suite”. Check Point Software entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Avanan and the transaction is expected to close imminently.

PHISHING STRIKE ON THE RISK: 83% OF ORGANIZATIONS IN INDIA REPORT INCREASED ATTACKS THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC, ACCORDING TO SOPHOS RESEARCH CHESTER WISNIEWSKI, PRINCIPAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST, SOPHOS

Sophos, a global Chief in next-generation cyber security, today announced the finding of its global survey, “Phishing Insight 2021,” which disclose that phishing attacks targeting organization set up substantially during the pandemic, as millions of employees working from home became a prime target for cyber security. The majority (83%) of 18 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    SEPTEMBER 2021

the IT teams in India said the number of phishing emails targeting their employees increased during 2020. Phishing has been around for 25 years and remains an effective cyber-attack technique. One of the reasons for its success is its ability to continuously evolve and diversify, tailoring to

topical issues or concerns, such as the pandemic, and playing on human emotions and trust,” said Chester Wisniewski, principal research scientist at Sophos. “it can be tempting for organizations to see phishing attacks as a relatively low-level threat, but that underestimates their power. Phishing is often the first step in a complex, multi-stage attack. The finding also reveals that there is lack of common understanding about the definition of phishing. For instance, 67% of IT teams in India associate phishing with emails that falsely claim to be form a legitimate organization, and which are usually combined with a threat or request for information. Sixty-one percent consider Business Email compromise (BEC) attacks to be phishing, and half of the respondents (50%) think thread jacking- when attackers insert themselves into legitimate email thread as part of an attack- is phishing. Wisniewski, said “The ideal would be to prevent phishing emails from ever reaching their intended recipient,” “Effective email security solutions can go a long way towards achieving this, but this should be complemented by alert and primed employees who are able to spot and report suspicious messages before they get any further.”

CLOUD COST MANAGEMENT – 6 ACTIONABLE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR CLOUD SPEND

1. Deploy Cloud Resources on a Small Scale – Only pay for what you use Most of the time, companies tend to purchase more storage arrays or compute nodes than they actually require. It is wise not to purchase additional resources if your applications or workloads don’t really need them. Also, not having excess cloud resources allow you to measure and predict the performance of your environment better and help to analyze cost savings. To start this, it would be prudent to go for a Pay-as-you-go model, which will enable the users to assess the requirement more appropriately.

BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM

2. Resource Tagging – Apply labels to accurately track resources Resource Tags are simply metadata labels that are assigned to your resources. Tagging allows you to attribute the costs of each resource to the specific business area, even when the resources are not in use. When you have specific goals defined, the tags will help you to predict and measure your environment to further lower cloud compute costs.

RAJENDRA CHITALE,

CFO, Crayon Software Experts India.

Most of the time, IT departments are anxious about their increasing cloud cost, especially when they are working with AWS, Azure, or GCP on a daily basis. The best way to eradicate this problem is to have a strict practice of cost management for every single resource created in the public cloud. There are many different aspects to consider. In terms of strict optimization, here are a few places to start. 20 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    SEPTEMBER 2021

3. Reserved Instances – Measure, then pre-pay for compute costs Reserved Instances is a discount billing concept in which businesses can obtain significant discounts in return for committing to a specified level of usage. The discount terms, however, vary from provider to provider. The benefit of reserving an instance instead of going with an on-demand model is that the hourly compute costs are significantly lowered. However, going for Reserved Instances will be possible only when the company is able to predict its usage levels or else the commitment would result in extra costs if not consumed. 4. Cloud Monitoring – How to monitor your cloud

environment Cloud monitoring allows you to identify, manage, and improve the status of your cloud-based resources by using cloud-native or 3rd party measurement tools. Initially, your cloud spends will increase because you are adding additional services. Over the time, with cloud monitoring, you will be able to pinpoint the exact sources of excess cost and take action to lower or remove them. 5. Cloud Monitoring Tools – Which tool is best for you? There are many cloud monitoring tools in the market today. Choosing the right tool depends on your specific business needs and long-term goals. The two most common cloud-native tools are Amazon CloudWatch and Microsoft Azure Monitor. Regarding 3rd party tools, it is important to have a detailed understanding of your specific requirements before making a decision. Monitoring solutions will vary by price, functionality, and size of the environment being monitored. 6. Hiring a Partner – External dedicated expertise Many organizations do not have the bandwidth or the headcount or the expertise to effectively manage each portion of their cloud environment, especially in a multi-cloud setup. Unless you have the appropriate resources, hiring a partner is the best recommendation. Many partners will have dedicated resources that are specific to each cloud provider, which allows them to pull the right technical architects for a particular problem. While there isn’t one answer to keeping cloud costs low, the best you can do is to keep a proactive approach. Focus on gaining short-term wins while setting up for success in the long term.

DO OR DIE  //  GUEST COLUMN

DO OR DIE: MODERNIZATION IS IMPERATIVE Do you know: 80% of US federal IT budget of $ 90 billion is spent on Operations & Maintenance of legacy IT systems

SUMIT KOTHIYAL,

Vice President Solutions- JK Tech.

Most software businesses that sell/support applications built over the past few decades, often with the same code base and technology stack, run mission and business-critical processes with such software. Are termed legacy, not actually a negative connotation, but, if you are using it for your IT infrastructure it is a ticking time bomb. Most of the business and technology stakeholders agree that legacy is no longer a choice, but a vital business imperative, but are unsure of the right approach. The obstacles that cause businesses to postpone or even abandon modernisation projects, vary from one organisation to another and can occur at different stages during the process such as the kind of programming languages used, application architecture, mode of deployment, etc. Few examples that can help clarify: n Software built with 3G/4G programming languages which are difficult to support n Monolithic architectures with tight bonding between UI, data, and application logic, making them inflexible and difficult to change n Primarily deployed as on-premises based applications, designed to solve a narrow business problem in each domain “If you can’t do business differently then, do different business”

Very often the businesses have a dual challenge of continuing to support an existing base of customers for survival, and at the same time, pursue growth and acquisition of new customers. And this is where it gets tricky, as there is always a conflict in balancing the priorities and needs of short-term vs long-term goals. Let’s look at some of the major challenges of modernisation that organisations face when taking on the task: n Heavy Legacy Ecosystem: In most enterprises, that have been running their IT for over two decades, there would be a vast array of applications that exist in legacy technologies. In such scenarios, when the management takes the decision of modernising the entirety of the legacy footprint, it ends up having a monumental business impact. Taking out even a single application on to the modernisation route, the upstream and downstream applications would continue to exist legacy technologies which also have a lot of legacy protocols, file formats, etc. Hence it becomes quite risky to take them out into a modern platform in one go. Using a re-factoring approach, wherein the selective sections are taken first to re-structure and optimize existing code without changing its external behaviour, followed by the rest, is generally the plan of action that needs to be followed. This ensures that once all the applications have been modernised and re-platformed, the support for the legacy footprint could eventually be turned off. n Data Migration: Businesses today, have a lot of data which includes their business transactions. Even if you are a new business, most of this data will run into gigabytes if not petabytes or terabytes, and would generally be organised across various database and file formats, etc. Apart from

this, there also might be older encoding being used, which ends up adding another dimension of difficulty in data migration, if not planned well. Overcoming these challenges, and looking at rehosting via cloud enablement, by deploying existing applications or build new components in the cloud or hybrid environment and cloud become quite a task to undertake when dealing with such scenarios. n Ensuring Business Continuity: Another thing that businesses need to look at while undergoing a modernisation process is that they need to ensure that the new platform has similar functionalities that match the existing data formats so that the switch does not end up interrupting business. Business continuity is quite crucial; hence it is essential for platform modernisation processes to ensure that a seamless transition takes place with clean data from the legacy app to the new platform. n Data Security and In House Expertise: One of the biggest challenges that businesses face today is data security. It could be high risk or low risk, there are many kinds of security challenges that generally must be checked upon and taken care of. In today’s world, the risk of cyber-attacks is quite high for cloud data platforms, when compared to on-premises, hence solid data security measures need to be in place. Having talked about data security, another issue that plagues many data modernisation projects is the lack of in-house expertise. Generally, operation teams are quite adept at handling problems that are related to either infrastructure or are applicationspecific and it is quite difficult to have command over both domains, in a way thatcan build a cohesive application. A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS IN MULTICLOUD ADOPTION

VIKAS BHONSLE,

CEO, Crayon Software Experts India.

The one broad objective that is expected from any implementation of technology or solution is that the initiative proves to be successful. This applies to Multicloud and Hybrid cloud solutions too, which have now become the de facto mode of digitalization. Gartner predicted that in 2021 – 90% of enterprises will adopt a Multicloud strategy. Three factors play an important role for the successful implementation of any Multicloud solution – the right knowledge, strategy and 22 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    SEPTEMBER 2021

Multicloud: A makeover of culture and discipline Adding Multicloud solutions mean having different cloud vendors, who will have their own unique processes, billings, systems and solutions. The goals and the concepts of each vendor are the same, but with multiple vendors, you will be addressing different demands, apps and processes. Multicloud offers innovations and opportunities suited to applications and business requirements, but this also requires a very serious level of insight and visibility – not to mention technical expertise. From the outset, you will require agile cloud experts and an informed management team. If you start buying and consuming cloud services without the proper framework and governance in place, you will only end up spending more time and resources in sorting out the complex cloud entanglements, which might prove to be a very costly affair. A Multicloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) One of the best practice methods of ensuring the success of your Multicloud journey is to build an internal Cloud Center of Excellence. This is the name given to a centralized, cross-discipline team that will manage and implement the entire process. A CCoE team is usually small and consist of experts in different areas of your digital estate, which are mostly the cloud infrastructure, architecture, app development, licensing, security, data analysis. It is very useful to include members from Non-IT functions, especially those from finance, security and operations. Lastly, from the outset, it should have a significant buy-in from the executive team as well. A CCoE has the ability to take a holistic view of where your business is now and where

it wants to go. It will look at the governance, planning, and architecture of your IT system and the critical aspects of using Multicloud services efficiently. A CCoE promotes organizational change Before you embark on the process, it is worth contemplating that the switch to a Multicloud environment will entail structural and cultural change. With a Multicloud deployment, purchasing and procurement move out of the finance arena and enter the operations arena. The rapid evolution of services means that old-school CIOs and IT teams are not enough. Your business will be best served by an expert team that consists of cloud architects, engineers, data scientists and security engineers. An expert adviser can accelerate the change Building a CCoE can be done by internal resources. However, inviting external resources can expedite the process with respect to required structure and expert knowledge. Choose a partner, who has comprehensive relationships with all the leading hyper-scale vendors and deep experience in helping clients migrate to the cloud. The best way to begin building a Multicloud center of excellence is by taking the following steps: n Ensure the goal and strategy are well defined n Build the team with organizational buy-in and ensure they have the authority to make changes n Create minimum viable standards and governance n Get operational teams to use the defined governance by supporting the initiatives and projects n Keep building culture by delivering training and evangelism n Use a partner to speed up deliverables & enhance the efficiency.

DATA RESPONSIBILITY NOW NEEDS TO CATCH UP WITH ACCELERATED CLOUD ADOPTION

LEO LYNCH,

Director, Asia Pacific, Arcserve.

BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM

COVID-19 has been a significant catalyst for cloud adoption, pushing many businesses past their initial reluctance. According to Gartner, Australian organisations are expected to spend almost A$10.4 billion on public cloud services in 2021, up 18.2% from 2020. Arcserve recently conducted a major survey that delves into cloud computing trends and how ANZ companies feel about cloud adoption in general. The study revealed that almost half of all respondents (45%) increased their cloud backup and recovery services because of COVID-19. Cloud backup and recovery on the rise but security concerns persist The pandemic has driven a wide range of cloud backup and recovery investments, with 63% of companies increasing investment in cloud backup use and 43% implementing data recovery plans that rely on the cloud. The cloud adoption trend is likely to persist even after the pandemic subsides, mainly because many companies now feel more comfortable with remote working. Facebook and Microsoft have publicly stated that their employees can permanently work from home, even after a

widely adopted vaccine. As a result, more support will be needed to effectively manage and protect data at these edge locations. And that raises an interesting question: is the cloud secure? A lot of companies don’t think it is. Our survey found that 47% of respondents in our region believe data backed up to a public cloud (AWS, Azure, Office365, etc.) is less safe than data backed up on-premises. This belief is understandable. It is human nature to trust yourself with the care of something valuable, such as your beloved pet or precious house plant, rather than someone else. The same holds for your data. When you go to the cloud, you are handing over the care of your most trusted asset, so there is naturally some hesitancy there, whether the risks are real or not. Even though COVID-19 has been a significant accelerant of cloud uptake, many companies are still hedging on their cloud journey due to security, control concerns, and hidden indirect costs. But are these concerns justified? Are the security risks serious enough to put a halt to your cloud transformation? The short answer is “no.” Most public clouds are more secure than any system you could install in your data centre. Data protection is a shared responsibility As businesses transition their data to the cloud, they should understand that cloud security is a shared responsibility between the cloud service provider and the customer. Cloud service providers, such as AWS, typically secure the core infrastructure and services as part of their commitment. When it comes to securing operating systems, platforms, and data, there are several tools provided by cloud vendors to protect data; however, the customer must still take responsibility to ensure their data is safe. Similarly, with a service like

Office 365, Microsoft guarantees the service, but it does not guarantee your data’s safety. It will secure your data for 30 days, and after that, it cedes responsibility. That is why it recommends that you use third-party software to protect your data long-term. Indeed, you should have the right cloud backup and recovery solution to protect your data comprehensively and gain the full control you need. It will help if you look for a cloud storage solution that safeguards data by taking continuous snapshots and provides multiple recovery points. This solution ensures that your data remains protected and always gives you easy access and visibility into your data. The good news is that more and more companies realise that data protection is a shared responsibility and that they cannot leave it all to their cloud provider. When asked whose responsibility it is to recover data and applications in a public cloud (AWS, Azure, Office365, etc.) in the case of an attack or loss of data, 61% of survey ANZ respondents said it is their responsibility. In comparison, only 39% said that it is their cloud provider’s job. Of course, there are other barriers to putting data in the cloud, such as compliance and regulation concerns. All told, 87% of survey respondents confessed that their adoption of cloud backup and recovery had faced obstacles, with security, compliance requirements, and lack of control of the data cited as the most significant concerns. These barriers are even trickier because every industry—whether finance, healthcare, education, etc.—is always changing its rules around what kind of security is needed and what certifications are required.

SECURITY //  CYBERATTACKS

SEVENTY-ONE PERCENT OF INDIAN ORGANIZATIONS ATTRIBUTE DAMAGING CYBERATTACKS TO VULNERABILITIES IN TECHNOLOGY PUT IN PLACE DURING PANDEMIC

Tenable published a global study that revealed 71% of organizations in India attribute recent business-impacting cyberattack to vulnerabilities in technology put in place in response to the 26 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    SEPTEMBER 2021

pandemic. The data is drawn from ‘Beyond Boundaries: The Future of Cybersecurity in the New World of Work,’ a commissioned study of more than 1,300 security leaders, business execu-

tives and remote employees worldwide, including 92 responses in India, conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Tenable. The study found a stark contrast between Indian organizations’ plans for a hybrid work model and the reality of securing it. Eighty percent of Indian organizations plan to have employees working from home at least once a week in the next 12-24 months, while 63% plan to make a permanent move to remote work over the next two years. But, an alarming 53% of security and business leaders expressed concerns that their organizations are only somewhat or not prepared at all to secure their workforce strategy. Specific challenges about supporting a remote workforce include the lack of employee awareness to secure home networks and personal devices (53%) and visibility into employee security practices (56%). To further compound matters, a meagre 29% felt that they have enough staff to adequately monitor the attack surface. It’s clear that organizations need to eliminate blindspots by shoring up their defenses to support the next phase of their workforce model. Impact of an atomised attack surface The study also found that the fast deployment of new technologies to facilitate remote work heightened the level of risk for Indian businesses. In the past year, a staggering 88% of Indian organizations experienced a business-impacting cyberattack, with 56% of respondents indicating that the attacks targeted remote workers. It comes as no surprise that, as organizations adopted new technologies to embrace remote work, their software supply chain expanded. Sixty-three percent of security leaders attributed recent attacks to a third-party software vendor compromise – underscoring the need for greater visibility into the atomised attack surface. “The future of work is without perimeters and organizations must be prepared to secure their new reality,” said Kartik Shahani, country manager at Tenable India. “It’s more important than ever for business and security leaders to lock arms and weave cybersecurity into the fabric of their organizations’ digital infrastructure. Organizations must rethink their approach to understanding and managing cyber risk in the new world of work.” Hybrid work models and a digital-first economy have brought cybersecurity front and centre as a critical investment that can make or break short- and long-term business strategies. To address this demand, Indian security leaders plan to increase cybersecurity investments in vulnerability management (92%), cloud infrastructure and platforms (84%) and identity access management (66%).

ORGANIZATIONS WITH MATURE DATA PRACTICES INNOVATE TWICE AS FAST: SPLUNK DOUG MERRITT, PRESIDENT AND CEO, SPLUNK

“In today’s world, data is a strategic asset helping organizations not just survive, but thrive,” said Doug Merritt, President and CEO, Splunk. “Our current era of innovation is propelled by those who are doing more than just storing and managing data. Organizations that have invested in placing data at the core of their operations are twice as innovative and twice as productive as those that aren’t.”

Splunk unveiled its State of Data Innovation report, which reveals a remarkable achievement gap between organizations with mature data practices versus data-innovation beginners. On average, data innovators release twice as many products and increase employee productivity at double the rate of organizations with less mature data strategies. The report, built using research conducted by Enterprise Strategy Group and directed by Splunk, surveyed 1,250 global business and IT managers from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Netherlands, UK, and the U.S.

Data Innovators Are Reaping Real Business Benefits Simply put, data maturity is an accelerator. In today’s digital landscape, businesses not only need a complete view of their data, but the ability to act upon their data quickly. Those who have invested heavily in data and met the criteria for a mature data approach are seeing great rewards, including: n Innovating at double the rate of beginnerlevel organizations n Entering new markets and increasing customer wallet share at nearly twice the rate of data beginners n Increased employee productivity by 16% in the past year, nearly double the increase of beginner-level innovators (9%).

n Being nearly twice as likely (66% versus 36%) to be directly monetizing their data.

Some Industries Are More Data-Driven Than Others The study quantifies data innovation across industries as well, including: n 50% of manufacturers applying data innovation to improve materials yields report a significant or game-changing impact. n Over 50% of retailers using data innovation to optimize inventory or personalize offers, product recommendations and customer service report a significant or game-changing impact. n 75% of healthcare orgs prioritize investments in data-innovation platforms (versus point tools). n 61% of financial services firms are impacting product/service development with data innovation, the highest percentage of all industries surveyed. n 67% of government agencies are data innovation “beginners”. Some Countries Are More Data-Driven Than Others Approaches to data innovation also varied across regions. Below are key regional findings: n 69% of North American organizations tend to prioritize investments in data-innovation platforms (versus point tools), slightly more than in Europe (67%), and notably ahead of APAC (58%). n 33% of APAC organizations rate better data utilization as their top business and IT priority for the next 24 months, a significantly higher proportion relative to both North America (21%) and Europe (17%). n 54% of APAC organizations are using observability to improve how they innovate with their data, outpacing North America and Europe (both 42%). n On average, 12% of IT budgets at European companies are allocated to solutions and staff that investigate, monitor, analyze and act on data, trailing North America and APAC (both 14%). n European organizations were the least likely to report hiring a chief innovation officer to drive initiatives (64%, versus 72% in North America and 75% in APAC). “In the past year and a half, in the midst of a global pandemic, the value of data-driven innovation and digital transformation has only been catalyzed,” said Adam Demattia, Director, Customer Research, ESG.

WEBEX  //  Q&A

INCLUSIVITY IS AT THE HEART OF WEBEX What is the opportunity of collaboration post-pandemic? The global pandemic has changed how we work and embedded collaboration technologies into our society’s fabric – from telehealth visits, remote learning to virtual legislatures. Today, collaboration technology plays a critical role in ensuring everyone has equal access to the global economy regardless of geography, language, or personality type. According to Gartner, by 2024, in-person meetings will account for just 25% of enterprise meetings, a drop from 60% prior to the pandemic. In this increasingly hybrid world, virtual collaboration is no longer viewed as just a communication tool; it is becoming the connective tissue within an organization’s culture. As businesses come to grips with the realities of a hybrid workforce, CIOs are focused on collaboration solutions that empower sustainable remote work, hybrid work, and a safe return to the office – all this by adhering to local rules and regulations and keeping employees and data safe and secure. Therefore, to cater to the evolving needs of the hybrid world, the demand for secure collaboration platforms that provide end-to-end data security from device to device, in transit, at rest, and when it’s stored will continue to grow. What is the opportunity for Cisco Webex? At Cisco, we are committed to using technology to empower a workforce and transform workspaces. With continued innovation, and a comprehensive technology portfolio, Cisco can help any organization provide simple, smart, and secure hybrid work experiences – from the office to the home and everywhere in between. Therefore, we foresee a massive opportunity for Webex in this digital-first world, as collaboration without compromise is key, especially as these platforms continue to facilitate critical functions like governance, citizen services, banking, and more.

India has consistently recorded the second highest usage of Webex globally since March last year. In 2021, from January to August, we have already seen a 25% increase in usage. This rise is driven not only by enterprises but by sectors like small businesses, governance, healthcare, education, etc. Therefore, we are confident that Webex is one of the few platforms with the global reach to drive transformation at scale – benefiting from its networking heritage and as part of the world’s largest enterprise security company. It can enable a shift away from the reliance on in-person interactions and geography-based hiring, opening the global economy and giving everyone a seat at the table—no matter where the table is. What are the innovations Cisco Webex has adapting to the new situation? At Cisco, we think about powering hybrid work in two distinct ways: enabling a Hybrid Workforce and transforming Hybrid Workspaces. Enabling a Hybrid Workforce means providing secure access and collaboration from anywhere, anytime. Transforming the Hybrid Workspace must bring together networking, security, and collaboration tools to enhance health and well-being, safety, and efficiencies. Apart from enhancing collaboration capabilities, Webex has been updated with over 800 new features and a selection of new devices to give users an uninterrupted, immersive, and intelligent experience whether they’re at home, at work, or on the go. In today’s hybrid world, organizations need flexible and inclusive solutions that have security build into them from the foundation. Our Webex portfolio is at the center of our customers’ strategies for securely empowering teams and increasing productivity. The all-new Webex Suite is the industry’s first suite for hybrid work to combine meetings, calling, messaging, polling, and events in one offering and allows the employee to access our full suite of

Webex tools to connect, communicate, and cocreate with co-workers, customers, and partners. Our capabilities for virtual event execution can support up to 100,000 participants, coupled with the industry’s first audience engagement solution that can make meetings more engaging in the form of polling, quizzes, etc. Moreover, we have the unique opportunity to embed inclusion into our collaboration platform, marked by well-being and ensuring every voice is heard and valued. Therefore, our new People Insights feature aligns with the goals people set personally for their meetings, work-life integration, connections, and focus time, helping people work smarter and combat burnout. Most importantly, eliminating language barriers is a key step to enabling a truly global, hybrid workforce. Through our real-time translation feature, Webex customers can preview translations from Hindi into 100+ languages. These innovations will help us ensure that we are powering a hybrid world with inclusivity at its core, leading to work experiences that are inspiring to employees and that help attract top talent. How is inclusivity at the heart of Webex? Our innovations represent our commitment to helping our customers and partners achieve their highest potential as they move from the old remote work world to the new hybrid work world. Inclusivity is at the heart of Webex, and this value system is embodied in our brand. A Cisco study estimates that 98% of future meetings will have at least one participant working remotely. Through these innovations, we want to ensure everyone in a hybrid workforce has equal opportunity and voice to thrive and be successful, and all these feature differentiations are based on this vision. We firmly believe opportunity is unevenly distributed throughout the world, but human potential is not. Therefore, if we do this right, we can level the playing field – creating opportunities regardless of geographic borders, socio-economic background, or language. How is Hybrid working simplified with Cisco Webex? Through a combination of hardware and software, we create tools that connect people, teams, ideas, and workflows with a single click, gesture, or simply our voice. Most importantly, to be successful in the era of hybrid work, organizations need to make sure their solutions are flexible, inclusive, supportive, secure, and easily managed on the backend by IT, and the all-new Webex is all about simplicity.
