Dear Friend, Last month we celebrated EVOLVING’S one-year anniversary at Unity Temple on the Plaza. It was a joyous occasion, indeed! We’ll have an article and photos from the event in the May issue. EVOLVING is like a puzzle. Each person who helps with the magazine is a piece in that puzzle. No piece has more value, or weight, than another. If just one piece is missing from the finished puzzle, then it just doesn’t work. So, the people I am acknowledging are in no special order, as each carries the same weight in our ability to create a perfect picture. I would like to thank the readers of EVOLVING. You are who this publication is for, and you are so very appreciated. Our advertisers are the lifeblood of this publication and we are all eternally grateful for your support. Our writers and artists are phenomenal. Each month, Bethany Klug, Carmelita Davis Beets, Jude LaClaire, Aluna Michaels and Jayana DeWolf share their wisdom. Our feature writers and the artists who provide the cover art continue to astound me with their creativity, as well. We have the best, and we are blessed. My team of workers involved with the magazine on a daily basis include Judy Kirkpatrick, Connie “Crash” Humiston and Karen Cowdry. Judy has been with me for seven years doing anything and everything, as needed. Connie “crashed in” the second month after I started EVOLVING. She is active in the community and has shown that you can be successful while doing what you love. And sweet Karen came to me and told me that she willed EVOLVING back into publication so she could work for me. She juggles many responsibilities, but is always there for the magazine. I am so blessed to have these women on my team. A very special thanks to our sponsors, the Cornerstone Foundation and Unity Temple. Words can’t express how grateful I am for their support and enthusiasm for EVOLVING. Christine Garvey went out of her way to make the party a stellar event. She is such a joy to work with. Two others, always helpful, are Jamie Rich and Liz Brown. They both are always willing to lend a hand. And I would like to thank Eden Alley for providing the delicious food! Aneal Vohra provided the photography services at the event. Aneal is an extremely talented photographer and I am so grateful he was there to document it. I’d like to introduce my new brain child, EATING WELL IN KANSAS CITY (www.eatingwellkc.com). Like EVOLVING, I can’t pinpoint exactly when or where the idea came. It is another ah-ha moment that came to life. I had worked up a prototype for the concept years ago and the time to come out is now. Yay! Please pick up a copy, free, at many of the EVOLVING sites! My daughters, Chrissy and Tara, are an integral part of the new magazine. It is so exciting to have the chance to work with my girls on this new endeavor. Chrissy is handling the advertising and she did a fantastic job, especially considering she only had two weeks for getting the first issue ready. And Tara will be helping with layout and design. So thank you, girls! I would also like to thank all of our volunteers, who go out of their way to deliver copies of the magazine, help with proofing and more. Thank you! And the person who is the entire reason I am who I am, and able to do what I do: my mother, Janet Dutton. My mom is one of those rare souls who can instill power and courage in others. As a child she exposed me to new and exciting things: backpacking through Europe, plays on Broadway, mime and acting classes. She taught me to love the uniqueness of individuals, but yet see we’re all the same. Her enthusiasm for life and adventurous spirit and giving nature are why I am here. She has always believed in me. Thank you, Mom. Sark said, “Invent your world. Surround yourself with people, colors, sounds and work that nourish you.” And I have. When something is right it just clicks and is effortless. That’s the way the past year has been, and for that, I have my creator to thank. When I published EVOLVING WOMAN, someone told me once that EVOLVING WOMAN was by Jill, for Jill. And it was somewhat true. I put my heart into that magazine and it soothed me in return. EVOLVING, however, isn’t just about me. It is by the community, for the community. Every person involved takes and makes it their own. I am so honored to be involved. Thank you all for being a vital piece of the puzzle that is EVOLVING magazine.

WILD JOY RELEASED Accessing Personal Power through Kundalini Mantras

The Ecstatic Poetry of Paul Goldman

By Elizabeth Cutting A male lion approached a cave where a lioness protected her cubs. Male lions have been known to eat the young of competitive males. The lioness met the threatening lion at the mouth of the cave. Straightening her spine, she aligned her face forward and tail straight back and shot fire out of her eyes. Although the lion out weighed her by 100 pounds, he turned and left. Most people have had experiences where they stand up straight (aligning their spine) and effectively “stand up for themselves.” At moments like these, they call upon an inner strength, or power, and focus their energy in a way that produces desired results. Spiritual energy is known by many names–chi, prana, life force, etc. Powerful energy stored at the base of the spine is called Kundalini in Sanskrit (the oldest known language). As that energy is awakened and moves up the spine, individuals experience access to more usable energy and personal power. At the core, Kundalini energy is tapping into the primal power of the universe. In Shakti Mantra: Tapping into the Great Goddess Energy Within, Thomas Ashley-Farrand states, “Kundalini Shakti is the power inherent in nature. It includes the phenomenon of electricity and magnetism. Esoterically, it is the energy that matches our internal conditions with an external reality.” The ways of tapping into that energy have been guarded for thousands of years. Only in the last 100 years have some methods been released to the public at large. For millennia, methods for invoking this power have been taught through the use of Sanskrit Mantra and ceremony. Thomas Ashley-Farrand (Namadeva) is an ordained Vedic Priest who has taught mantra and performed Sanskrit ceremonies since 1973. The author of numerous books and CDs (www.sanskritmantra.com), he returns to Kansas City May 21-23, 2010 to present a weekend mantra workshop on “The Mysterious Kundalini.” The workshop will provide ancient Sanskrit mantras, or prayers, which according to Ashley-Farrand in a recent interview, “are tools to access more of one’s own power, making it more available for whatever one is trying to accomplish.”

Sacred Music by Tom Jacobs

An entire new genre of Spoken Word Ecstatic Poetry and Music by Spoken Word Artist and Ecstatic Poet Paul Goldman. With inspired sacred musical accompaniment by Tom Jacobs, a palpable aura of love envelopes and enfolds, taking the listener to a place of healing, transformation and pure bliss.

Most people have had experiences where they stand up straight (aligning their spine) and effectively “stand up for themselves.” At moments like these, they call upon an inner strength, or power, and focus their energy in a way that produces desired results. “I’m a practical guy,” he continued, “concerned that people have the tools to deal with the circumstances and conditions of life, to tap into aspects of self that they had no previous access to, or even knew existed. As you begin to work with mantras, you begin to interact with universe in an entirely new way.” With dedication and practice, chanting mantras is an effective way to activate energy, clear blockages and bring forth energy which can be used to ease life, restore health and improve circumstances. Like the wild lioness protecting her young, when individuals have their spiritual and physical energy aligned, they can direct and manage their energy to accomplish feats far greater than they could before. Elizabeth Cutting is a writer, astrologer and seminar producer. For information on the workshop, contact her at 816-532-4727 or eacutting@aol.com, or register at Aquarius Bookstore: 816-931-6303

Review of Paul Goldman’s “Wild Joy Released” Vern Barnet, “Faiths and Beliefs” columnist for The Kansas City Star, has written of Goldman’s poetry: “The wild, holy energy within [Goldman’s work] can burst forth only from a ‘man who has lost himself in love,’ such as Rumi and other seers, whose poetry [Goldman’s verse] now joins.”

By Mark Scheel A letting go of the “dogmatic” old, a reaching forth to embrace the “spiritual” new—a tsunami of the soul is sweeping over humankind, and Paul Goldman, with his Sufistic voice is there, fully in the vanguard, helping to define and shape its Divine message of love, healing and joy. The appearance of his new CD, Wild Joy Released: The Ecstatic Poetry of Paul Goldman, a true gift of vision and love from the heart, constitutes a signature event for the spiritually-aware community. Consisting of 30 individual poems recited by Goldman to the soft accompaniment of Tom Jacobs’ guitar, the collection transports the listener beyond the bounds of moment to a place of peace and harmony and hope. A perfect vehicle for escaping the bustle of the here and now, a soothing background for contemplative meditation. The selection “Lost Himself in Love” declares, “Each

day, a fresh bite of life revealed—as pure/as a peachfaced mango tasted that first time./…Each moment is love, each breath is love….” So it is, woven thematically throughout Goldman’s verses, that timeless message of the ages reminding us the Divine Source of our whole being is but “pure love.” And with that recognition comes the immediate awareness that, “…Divine Mother,/in your love and grace, we are each one/ birthed anew day by glorious day.” Vern Barnet, “Faiths and Beliefs” columnist for The Kansas City Star, has written of Goldman’s poetry: “The wild, holy energy within [Goldman’s work] can burst forth only from a ‘man who has lost himself in love,’ such as Rumi and other seers, whose poetry [Goldman’s verse] now joins.” I would concur wholeheartedly with Mr. Barnet’s assessment. This cherished listening experience is a keeper. A former prose editor for Kansas City Voices magazine, Mark Scheel is the author of the award-winning collection A Backward View: Stories and Poems and a novel -in-progress which he describes as a 21st century "pilgrim's progress."

Gary Sparks, author and Jungian analyst, visits Kansas City for a Friday evening presentation April 23 entitled, “The Heart of a Scientist: An Atomic Physicist's Ordeal of Matter and Meaning” and Saturday workshop April 24 entitled, “Synchronicity in Thought and Deed.” The programs are presented by Kansas City Friends of Jung and will be held at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 w. 47th St., KCMO 64112. Both the lecture and the workshop deal with the friendship between Carl Jung and atomic physicist Wolfgang Pauli, one of quantum physics' founders. The Friday lecture explores similarities in Jung and Pauli's creative discoveries and considers the connection between matter and spirit they felt key to Western

survival, with particular emphasis on Pauli's despair over the devastation his science prepared for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Saturday workshop will focus on the reality of spirit in matter in light of Jung's concept of synchronicity. Participants will be encouraged to develop a practical, working recognition of synchronicity and the living relation between spirit and matter. Sparks is an analyst in private practice in Indianapolis, Ind. He has authored and edited several books on Jungian psychology and lectures widely throughout the US and Canada. The cost for the Friday presentation is $20 and $65 for the Saturday workshop. Students and Friends of Jung members receive discounts. Visit: www.kcjung.org

FIBROMYALGIA—It only means you hurt in 13 or more places! Fibromyalgia is not a Disease! It is a condition characterized by widespread or generalized muscular pain, tenderness and fatigue. This means every organ and muscle in your body is congested with cellular debris! There are many things you can do to improve your health. It is too hard to do by yourself. You need a team! 1. Find a respected D.O. or Naturopathic or Chinese Doctor. Or ask your physician if s/he can help clear your body with herbs and get off medications. Most know this is a good approach and will work with you, but your doctor cannot prescribe herbs. 2. Improve your bowel functions with colon therapy, colemas or a good herbal cleanse. 3. Improve your diet. Have a nutritionist establish a plan that works well for your body. 4. Get regular chiropractic adjustments—the spine is the base for the whole body! 5. Establish an exercise program. Start with water aerobics or walking. 6. Work with a massage therapist who does lymphatic work to help relieve the pain. 7. Call Terry Hug who can help you with 3 out of 6 on the list!

Taizé Prayer

Arvind Zanje has taught traditional Hatha Yoga in India for the past 13 years. Arvind recently taught at a teachers workshop in Thialand for Santosha.

3 DAY WORKSHOP JUNE 11-13 $115.00 with early registration All Types of Yoga Asanas & Sanskrit Names along with adjustments, Yoga Philosophy, Basic Pranayama (breath), Meditation, Omkar Chanting, Bandhas and Chakras

Three times a day, the bells ring an invitation to prayer through the tiny town of Taizé, in the rolling country-side of the burgundy region of France. At the monastery, monks and visiting pilgrims stop their activities to come together in the spacious, candle-lit Church of the Reconciliation for an hour of meditation. It was 1940 when Reformed Swiss Protestant, Brother Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche arrived in Taizé by bicycle to establish a refugee camp. The community ministered to refugees of all religions and nationalities. After the war, the ecumenical monastic community of Taizé took shape, as men of all religious traditions joined with Brother Roger to promote reconciliation and unity through denominational diversity. In 1952, Br. Roger wrote his rule of community, solidifying the unity of the Brothers in an ethic of prayer, work and hospitality -“the essential that makes the common life possible.” Today, the community consists of more than 100 brothers and hosts thousands of pilgrims annually who seek to live out the Gospel call to reconciliation. Pope John the XXIII, an ardent supporter of Brother Roger’s ecumenical efforts, and a visitor himself, called Taizé, “That little bit of springtime.” Taizé prayer consists of a repeating contemplative meditation cycle of sacred readings, song and silent time. Readings and scripture, interspersed with beautiful repeating meditative choruses, are followed by extended periods of silence, allowing participants to "Be still and know that I Am." In the Taizé com-

munity, songs are sung in a chorus of the diverse native languages of those present, a true testimony to unity in diversity. Silence is an extremely important aspect of Taizé prayer. Periods of silence during Taizé prayers may vary from 5 to 15 minutes long, allowing worshipers to enter into the still presence of God. In the quiet of silent inner peace, hearts are opened and consenting to the breath of Spirit, whispering continuous prayer around us. “In Harmony” is a trio of local women who are bringing the hospitality and contemplative peace of Taizé prayer to churches and organizations seeking such quiet times for reflection. In Harmony’s Taizé services are written for liturgical seasons or on scriptural themes for mission groups, retreats, church and community events. In Harmony’s mission is to promote and foster unity in diversity through contemplative prayer practice and provide assistance to those in need through the allocation of proceeds to local charitable organizations. At the heart of Taizé is the unquenchable longing for reconciliation on earth, the truest prayer of all sacred traditions. It is the work and hope of In Harmony that the peace of Taizé prayer will be translated through the lives of its participants and those they encounter mip'nei tikkun ha-olam (for the sake of the repair of the world). Interview with Lama Surya Das

By Liz Brown We spoke recently by phone with Lama Surya Das, from his home in Concord, Massachusetts. He is the internationally acclaimed Buddhist teacher the Dalai Lama affectionately calls "The American Lama". He will be the featured presenter for the Cornerstone Foundation on April 17-18 at Unity Temple on the Plaza. How do the increasing demands of our 24/7 world even make spiritual practice possible? It’s not time we lack, but focus … what with multi-tasking and so forth. Spiritual practice is always possible, because you do it amidst your life. It’s not something separate; it’s really an inside job. You can do it anywhere. You can contact your higher power anywhere, not just in a church, synagogue or mosque. You can contact your inner self, your higher self, anywhere. So practices like mindfulness become exceedingly important today, when we don’t have that much time to meditate or do yoga or pray a lot, or on the weekend when we have a lot of family commitments. Integrating spirituality with daily life is how it is today. Not taking time away to connect with God in a cave, but integrating it into daily life. That’s the practices I’m interested in today: mindfulness, loving-kindness and the practice of presencing, which I find very important. The practice of presencing brings together a lot of mindfulness, loving-kindness, the awareness of the now. These are the kinds of spiritualities we need today when time is short. What can people expect on Friday evening? And what will participants in the all-day Saturday workshop learn? On Friday evening, I’ve been invited to speak about the Six Building Blocks of a Spiritual Life. I have 13 books out, but this is in only one of them: The Mind is Mightier than the Sword: Enlightening the

Mind, Opening the Heart. This will be more of a dharma talk, beginning with a little Tibetan chant and with plenty of questions and answers. It will be very interactive. On Saturday, there will be some teaching and some Q&A, chanting meditation, breathing exercises, pair exercises and so forth. With Q&A at the end of every session The reason I do a lot of Q&A is because I can talk all day till the cows come home and we’re so used to that style of learning, and of course TV and the Internet and other passive forms of learning; but Q&A allows me to do some laser teaching. One on one, back and forth, providing the tools and techniques and helping tailor them to the individual. And people are allowed to ask the hard questions. They’re invited to ask the hard questions. I’m a Jewish jock from Long Island that can talk about stuff and be challenged. I’m glad when people ask me the hard questions. After all, who do they have to ask today? I’m glad to get involved in a fruitful back and forth, a meaningful dialogue and explore the questions together. How will participants’ lives be changed after this weekend? It depends on the participants. The quality of the experience will depend on if they’re interested in participating. It is the participant’s responsibility. I’m here to help people get out of their ruts and raise some of these questions. And not just ask the first question, but the second and third. A little acceptance can go a long way, like accepting your mate, which can go a long way to transforming the relationship. Relational mindfulness and looking into your relationships with others can be very, very helpful.

Spring is the perfect time for a cleanse. I’ve done some sort of internal cleansing each spring, summer and fall for years. Cleansing can boost energy levels, clear mental and physical sluggishness, break food addictions, promote weight loss and heal disease. One of my favorite ways to cleanse is the mono-diet, or modified fast. It’s not a true fast, since fasting entails only water consumption. No other food or drink is consumed. Prior to the chemical age, nearly anyone could do a water fast. Now, our chemical burden is so high, most people would become ill as the chemicals were released from their fat tissues. A mono-diet avoids this. During a mono-diet, one type of food is consumed. This rests the digestive system and allows the body to detoxify and repair without overwhelming the detoxification systems. Most people can go about their daily activities, some even work during a mono-diet. I’ve hesitated to recommend monodiets for the lack of written material on them. I finally found an excellent book, Juice Fasting & Detoxification by Steve Meyerowitz. He covers how to begin, including the right time and place. Neither Meyerowitz nor I recommend mono -dieting during the winter months. We need our energy for warmth and immunity. I prefer to mono-diet while on vacation. I can slow down and rest as needed. He also addresses how to prepare for a mono-diet. While experienced monodieters may like to jump right in, he suggests tapering off refined foods, animal products, dairy and cooked foods over a few days, while adding raw fruits, veggies and juices until ready to start the monodiet. Meyerowitz and I are most enthusiastic about mono-dieting with fresh juices. I prefer vegetable juices as most of us don’t need all the sugar in fruit juices. Some people like a bit of apple or pear in their veggie juice to lessen the perceived bite. Vegetable juices are rich in phytochemicals that drive detoxification and repair in our bodies. There's no reason to limit mono-dieting to juices. I’ve monodieted with vegetable broth and even brown rice. My health changed dramati-

cally after eight days on a brown rice mono-diet years ago. Ending a mono-diet is just as important as how to mono-diet. Going back to your regular diet right away can undo all the benefits and even make you sick. Meyerowitz’s book is the only one I’ve encountered that details how to come off the mono-diet. Meyerowitz outlines the physiological changes that occur during fasting, including how the stomach shrinks and its pH becomes more alkaline. The stomach needs time to resume its normal size and pH. The other digestive organs need time to resume their normal enzyme production and activities. Thus Meyerowitz suggests taking half the time spent on the mono-diet to gradually add bulk to the diet with high water content foods such as fruit, soups and smoothies. Then he recommends as many days again to add leafy greens, sprouts, and toward the end of the period, good quality oils, avocado, nuts and seeds. Finally, cooked foods and animal products can be resumed. The first three days of a mono-diet are usually the most difficult. Hunger, headaches, light headedness, sweating and frequent urination are common. Coated tongue, bad breath, strange body odors or even skin rashes can occur as the body releases stored toxins into the bloodstream. Some people feel flu-like. Then bursts of energy come with finally a feeling of well-being. Food doesn’t even sound good during this phase. It feels so good that I want it to go on forever! Finally, hunger returns and it’s time for the mono-diet to end. With Meyerowitz as your guide, nearly everyone can enjoy the benefits of cleansing.

Journey to wholeness

The Mentor in the Mirror When you look in the mirror next time, see what faces of the mentor you can identify. This magical mentor mirror has many facets. By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” —Oprah Winfrey In Greek mythology, Mentor is the trusted counselor of Odysseus. Athena, disguised as Mentor, guides the young Telemachus in his search for his father. She is the goddess of prudent intelligence, child of Zeus, able to bestow skill, courage and victory in war for those who revere justice and listen to her persuasive tongue. Mentor was a man of integrity, an excellent friend and did not deal in lies. The figure of the wise and trusted counselor or teacher has the nature of both male and female. Shakyamuni Buddha in his teaching, the Lotus Sutra, introduces his disciples to the Dragon King’s Daughter, a mythical figure who is part dragon and part girlchild. Her presence challenges the belief that only learned men can attain enlightenment and that it takes a long time to attain enlightenment. She appears before the assembly praising Shakyamuni Buddha, offering a jewel to the Buddha, transforms herself into a male and instantly attains enlightenment. This mythical character speaks to us of the wisdom of both male and female and the capability within each living being to become that enlightened whole person. These two stories remind us of the multi-faceted nature of the mentor. There is the mentor outside of oneself that guides, leads and protects us. There is the mentor within that has the potential for wholeness. Think for a moment about the people in your life that have been there for you to be the wise guide. What qualities did they have as they guided you along the path of self-discovery? How did their actions and words influence you in some positive way? What part of this learning do you carry forward in your life? I imagine the mentor being the mirror that reflects the limitless possibilities to the person. Jean Houston says, “We all have the extraordinary coded with us, waiting to be released.” The mentor relationship can be the catalyst to help the person unlock this inner potential. Take another moment and think

about how many lives you touch each day. Are you a good mentor for others, even in casual contact? Do you receive mentoring from others so that you may guide others? A good mentor will be the "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage." The poet, Kahlil Gibran says, “If he is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.” We often forget the great power we have to influence others. Claire Nuer asks the question, “Will you be the rock that redirects the course of the river?” Each day we have an opportunity to make or break a communication with how we look, speak and act towards someone. It can change a moment, a day or a lifetime. Sometimes you need a teacher, a model, an encouraging voice and there appears to be no one available. From this tangle of emotions and thoughts, you may emerge with a new way to do something, a new thought, a clearer vision of yourself or a particular situation. Alice Walker in her book, In Search of Our Mother's Gardens: Womanist Prose, describes how a mentor of hers found the model within. “When Tony Morris said she writes the kind of books she wants to read, she was acknowledging the fact that in a society in which ‘accepted literature’ is so often sexist and racist and otherwise irrelevant or offensive to our lives, she must do the work of two. She must be her own model as well as the artist attending, creating, learning from, realizing the mode, which is to say, herself.” As you grow and learn you are being mentored by others; mentor yourself and become a mentor for others. When you look in the mirror next time, see what faces of the mentor you can identify. This magical mentor mirror has many facets.

Energy Healing School Introduction to Energy Healing Workshop April 3, 2010

Put Springtime in Your Life By Carmelita Davis Beets

We’ve made it through a long, cold winter, and spring is here! The air smells wonderful, the sun feels fantastic and the blooming flowers are beautiful. It’s easy to be happy, upbeat and optimistic when spring finally arrives. Wouldn’t it be lovely to feel that kind of unbridled joy all the time, no matter what time of year, what’s going on in your life and whether or not the sun is shining? Think about changes you can make in your life that will allow the beauty of spring to resonate every day of the year. What changes can you make to your surroundings and your attitude? To discover the secret, look no further than the signs of spring….the beauty of the flowers, the melodic calls of song birds, the clean fragrance of the air, and the warmth and glow of the sun. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH BEAUTY I do love flowers, but there are many other things that I surround myself with that I find beautiful. My home is filled with artwork, books, photographs, interesting pieces I’ve collected while traveling and my favorite felines. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, so focus on what’s beautiful to you and don’t worry about pleasing others! Unless, of course, you share your home with someone who has a different definition of what’s beautiful. If that’s the case, the two of you should find things that you both love. Some people feel great with a lot of bright colors in their home. Others like earth tones, muted colors, blacks and grays or whites and creams. Discover what colors make you happiest and incorporate them into one room…or your entire house! Fill your home with music that you find beautiful. Some days, you may decide to listen to a radio station that plays oldies. Other times, you may want to play CDs of soft, romantic interludes or haunting ballads. Find the music each day that makes you feel wonderful; and, if you sometimes crave silence, that can be beautiful as well. To capture that wonderful smell of spring air, keep your home as clean as possible. Lightly scented candles, incense, and aroma infusion sticks can compliment and add personality to your environment.

And how can you capture the feeling of warmth that we love in the springtime? Believe me, I’m not suggesting that you live without air conditioning! Warmth in our home isn’t based on the temperature of the air, but rather on the feelings of love, peace, comfort, and serenity that we’ve created. MAKE A DECISION TO BE HAPPY! Your home will be a place of warmth when you are positive, enthusiastic about life and focused on all that is good. We really need to celebrate what’s right in our lives, rather than put the emphasis on what’s wrong. An important part of that is deciding that you will never give any person or any situation the power to take away your joy. YOU are the only person who can make yourself anything less than joyful. We are all responsible for our own lives and attitudes. No matter what kind of personality you have, you can make a decision to learn to be happy on purpose. For example, when you wake up in the morning, you have the ability right then to determine what your day will be like. Celebrate each day as if it were a gift, no matter what you’ll be doing. Despite what many think, most people already have what they need to be happy. Don’t waste a moment looking for a magic bullet or putting off happiness until you have this or that. Look at everything around you as a symbol of your journey, your courage and your determination. Changing your circumstances can take time. But changing the way you look at your circumstances takes no time at all! This spring, take full responsibility for who you are, how you live your life and how you feel. Give yourself permission to live the life of your dreams. Fill your life with beautiful things, wonderful aromas and music, and positive, joyful thoughts. Don’t settle for life in a dreary jungle. Live your life from the mountaintops, and see each day as the first day of spring!

This is an informational and experiential workshop designed for people to expand their knowledge and practical capabilities for working with healing energy.

Individual Psychotherapy, Dream Work

in business

Ashley & Associates By Jayana DeWolf Independent professionals must be as skilled as tight rope walkers to create and maintain a thriving business. On a daily basis, they perform a carefully orchestrated balancing act of time and self management. Juggling personal life, client’s needs, workload and self -marketing is no easy endeavor. A fair amount of time and effort goes into locating potential clients and, once found, the real work begins…creating demand. For some, marketing is a daunting often frustrating task, involving hours of futilely explaining the business’s services or products and their potential benefits over and over again. Susan Ashley, of Ashley & Associates, knows this frustration all too well, which is why she wisely approached her coaching practice as a serious business and developed a business and marketing plan. Susan pulled from her own experiences when developing her business plan. In 2005, Susan sold the promotional items business she had owned for 12 years and began working for various companies in search of the perfect job. After three years, when she realized her passion was in helping people grasp their potential, she began the coaching certification process. Once her certification was complete, she quit her fulltime job and opened her practice as a Certified Coach specializing in career, transition and life challenges; the three areas with which she was most familiar. Susan exudes her passion, which is a great asset in marketing and important for developing a marketing strategy. She understood her audience and knew one of her major hurdles would be establishing value and communicating the benefits of personal coaching so that the value is clear and reasonable to her audience. Unless discussing team sports, coaching is often dismissed as non-essential to individual success. She wanted her strategies to be focused and productive, so she first established her purpose and then defined supporting value statements. Her value statements had to address potential concerns, be clear and easy to convey and emphasize the rewards and results. Next, she constructed a marketing approach which went further than advertising and participating in networking opportunities. In fact, she is an avid networker, attending two or three networking events each week. So locating potential clients was not an issue— reaching a larger audience was. To address a larger audience, Susan volunteers to speak to networking groups, church groups, ladies auxiliaries, industry associations, etc. Susan also understands that creating one personal success story could produce numerous referrals, thereby reaching an even wider audience. To that end, she offers free services: reports, get-acquainted teleseminars, a job club and emails motivational tips. All her strategies focus on communicating her message in a way

that invites participation and creates a pleasant experience with coaching. The most unique component in Susan’s marketing plan was she stopped “telling” and focused on “asking”. She recognized there would be those who dismissed coaching out of fear of being told what to do or reluctance to ask for help. The most advantageous approach, in her opinion, was to lead by example. She believes that asking questions designed to draw a person out and allow them to form their own conclusions builds confidence, thereby easing their fear of coaching. Likewise, for those who avoid asking for help, her example of asking instead of telling creates comfort with the whole process of asking. Either way, her approach focuses on the individual and serves as the first step in building a mutually respectful and stress-free relationship. Creating demand is more difficult than fulfilling it, and requires more effort on businesses to clearly define their unique message and value; however, the nature of today’s market makes the costs of failing to create demand far more dangerous, especially for independent professionals. To succeed in creating demand, a business must fully understand the customer’s “problem” and adopt the philosophy that the value of the relationship is far more than the value of the products or services offered.

Life

Coaching By Sally L. Ford

“The world needs more people who have the great combination of ambition and self-belief that’s necessary for undertaking radically positive shifts in their lives.” —Thomas J. Leonard Leonard is considered to be the father of personal coaching and regarded as the coach’s coach. He opened the first personal coaching practice in 1982 and then founded Coach University in 1992, a virtual university that has trained thousands of personal coaches in thirty countries. He founded the International Coach Federation (ICF) in 1994; and, in 2001 he founded Coachville, which provides all kinds of resources to coaches worldwide. His impact on coaching and, in particular, personal coaching is phenomenal. For many coaches, supporting others in building terrific lives is the most fulfilling work they have ever done. Life Coaching isn’t about giving yourself pep talks or working longer or harder than everyone around you or being the meanest shark in the corporate sea—it is about creating a highly encouraging blueprint for success, a lively new way of honoring yourself and

remaking the world on your terms. Leonard’s approach attracts what you want into your life— whether in the form of success at work, solid and rewarding friendships, blue-chip clients, higher income, richer life satisfaction, deeper relationships or more opportunities for personal and professional growth. By this time in your life, you’ve probably once or twice taken a long look at your struggles in life, career or personal relationships and thought, “There’s got to be a better way. A better way to a nice house, a real life, a great relationship, a business of my own, answers to the problems I have now but without being fried by overwork and stress.” In a study conducted by the International Coach Federation, the benefits of working with a coach are many. Almost 85 percent of people reported that the reason they hire a coach is to be a sounding board. Other reasons are Motivator: 78.1 percent, Friend: 56.7 percent, Mentor: 50.5 percent, Business consultant: 46.7 percent, Teacher: 41.0 percent, Taskmaster: 30.5 percent and Spiritual Guide: 29.5 percent.

The number one issue they want help with is time management followed by career guidance and business advice. To a lesser but still significant extent, they seek coaching on relationships, family, wellness and spirituality. The outcomes that clients most often attribute to their coaching are a higher level of selfawareness and self-confidence, a more balanced life, smarter goalsetting and lower stress levels. And, by a landslide, 98.5 percent of coaching clients said their investment was well worth the money. In Kansas City, we are very fortunate to have a vital chapter of ICF: the Heartland Coaches Association, which represents a community of professional coaches, dedicated to coaching advocacy though Education, Professionalism and Community. Sally L. Ford is a Life Coach and spiritual counselor. She has spent the last 20 years exploring spirituality and new thought. She teaches workshops and teleseminars on the Law of Attraction. For more details visit her website at www.sallyford.com or contact her at sallyford@sallyford.com

Shamanic Coaching Manifesting your dreams! By Carol Rydell and Rev. Dr. Gary Langston

As shamanic coaches, we are gifted with the opportunity to help many people make major changes in their lives. Some of these changes come about willingly and others begrudgingly, yet they do come about. Our society nowadays offers a vast array of tools for helping to manifest dreams and creating the life desired. Yet with all of these tools available, why aren’t more people living lives filled with abundant love, money in the bank, great jobs, more friends, etc.??? As much as one follows the prescribed programs and desires particular outcomes, they just don’t seem to happen. Why is that? Despite all of the tools available to us, we sabotage ourselves due to subconscious limitations as well as what has been modeled to us. This is where shamanic coaching can help change that. Shamanic Coaching is designed to help you align all aspects of your life with the soul purpose you have identified. It is a holistic approach where attention is given to you, as a complete being. It addresses the practical, emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects of the person. The techniques include physical and energetic clearing, visioning, journeying, intuition, dreams, ceremony, movement, sacred art, prayer and various other techniques. It can also include very practical aspects of goal planning and success measurement. This type of coaching is not considered therapy. It is a soul-based partnership between your spiritual teachers in nonordinary reality and you. Non-ordinary reality is the shaman's world behind one's eyes. This is growth at a soul level, integrating your energetic body and aligning your will to your heart's desire through the shamanic

path of direct experience. In essence we want to free ourselves from emotional blocks and pains, act from our heart instead of our head, express our most authentic self and move to a place that love is expressed everywhere in our life. A recent client, Marlissa, had been struggling with searching for a new job. She had placed numerous applications and was fortunate enough to be asked to interview for many of them. Following the interviews, she always felt that she was so close to being hired. Unfortunately, the company in question would then notify her that she was no longer under consideration for the position. This pattern of application, interview and rejection continually repeated itself. Marlissa decided that she desired to take steps to change this pattern. During her sessions with us we engaged the unseen realms to discover what was undermining her desires. What surfaced were old belief systems and patterns which reinforced that she wasn’t good enough, smart enough or deserving of any of these new positions. This was so, even though on a conscious level, she believed that she was. Over a fairly short time span, we were able to assist Marlissa in clearing the energetic blocks and old belief systems that were holding her back. In less than four weeks after these areas were cleared, Marlissa had secured a new position for a company with which she desired to work. Existing patterns in our lives are generally created over an extended time. As an example, if you are forty years old, much of what you believe about yourself has accrued for forty years. So, unwinding unwanted patterns and beliefs doesn’t generally hap-

pen instantaneously. The individual must be committed to their change. Shamanic Coaching assists in getting the ball rolling. It helps the individual gain clarity, being accountable to self as well as others. It also helps to create a better understanding of the most authentic self. This process helps create an alchemical change and fosters action in one's life. It also will bring the person into a direct relationship with their guides, angels and helpers from the unseen realms. Shamanic coaching helps one to set goals guided by Spirit as well as develop plans that include spiritual and material desires. It will use shamanic energy medicine to clear the practical, psychological and energetic blocks that can keep one from executing even the best of plans. The process of shamanic coaching helps us shift our identity from our ego to our essence. This is a key step to being born and re -membering ourselves as a more universal human, awakening and embracing our soul’s true expression. It is the process for helping you move from your head to your heart. Recently our dear friend Kutira Decosterd expressed succinctly the essence of why you would use shamanic coaching. “Find a life purpose. Ask to know what you are born to do. Follow the compass of joy and happiness. Seek out those who affirm the highest in you. Go Green! Live more sustainable. Care and Share and build community NOW.” Ultimately it’s up to each one of us. Bright blessings to each of you!

Life Coaching—From the Inside Out by Rev. Diadra Price We have probably all had the experience of a gifted coach in our lives, and for most of us we revere them with admiration, gratitude and deep respect. I remember having extreme difficulty in school with learning French, and if it had not been for Ms. Mitchell and her infinite patience with me (three years), I would have never made it to Paris. Then there was this thing called “golf.” Well, even though I never broke a score of 100, I came close after being coached. You can only imagine how high it was before the coaching. Today, golfing is not my talent or even my pleasure, but I am so grateful for the coaching. I have a precious and beloved friend who is a math coach to high school students. Talk about admiration! I am awed as I watch her transform the lives of kids—some of whom have gone on to become athletic stars, earn scholarships to colleges and totally reconstruct their self esteem. Oh my, what a gift her coaching is to young life. At one point, when my life began to shift toward a passion for spiritual understanding, self- realization, and awareness of Oneness, my life coaches took on new forms of expression and appearances. I’ll never forget walking on the beach after a huge storm at sea. The sand was literally covered in scallop shells and other various treasures that had washed upon the shore. I had one of those mystical experiences of pure bliss—for almost two hours—as I marveled and filled my sun bonnet with the shells. I still have them, by the way. Memory of that experience has become a coach for me, teaching me that being in, and deeply appreciating the beauty of nature can reactive that state. Beauty brings up a sense of “Awe”…and awe always throws me into bliss. Now, as my passion grows more deeply within the realization of Oneness, I realize that Life has been coaching me from myriad perspectives to find the see-shells that were deeply imbedded in the floor of the ocean of my consciousness. I have come to realize that often it takes a April 2010

From here, all desire rises from the heart as an impulse from the Divine. mighty storm to get these treasures to surface. Storms of life are coaches too. For just a moment, I want you to entertain the idea that perhaps the very Essence of you is a Life Coach, and that this Life Coach has been, not only with you, but IS you forever! Follow this dialogue of reasoning with me: At the center of each of us there is “something” that rises from the very core of Life, prompting a yearning for the fulfillment of our heart’s desires and the revelations of purpose. From whence does this “something” arise? Answer: from the very Source of Life itself! And in the Absolute, we are not separate from that Source, and thus, not separate from the fulfillment of our heart’s desires and revelations of purpose. Therefore, desire, fulfillment of desire, and passion for purpose are all YOU as LIFE coaching you toward revelation and manifestation of whatever you desire. Life is coaching you in the direction of acceptance of who and what you already are, Not only is Life coaching you in this direction, but all the great sages, saints, teachers and spiritual leaders who have served as life coaches point

us in the direction of accepting our own divinity and our Oneness-WithAll-That-Is. My question to you today is, “Can you accept the ultimate truth that all that you are is God, and that your soul purpose and mission in life is to express this fully? I hear you echo, “I want to, and I keep trying, but no matter what I do, I still feel separate.” That’s because there is nothing you can “do” to bridge a gap that doesn’t exist. You are not separate from the Divine. God is all there is, and you are now and forever an expression of That! The very life that you are is coaching you to accept what and who you truly are already. You may not be all that God is, but all that you are is God! If you truly grasp that statement, it will change your life completely. The years 2010, 2011 and 2012 offer each of us windows of opportunity that have never been available to us in the past. Life in all of its expressions now coaches us and impulses us to choose beyond the so called “known.” Life from within impulses us to choose the unknown, to step out beyond faith into an abyss of the Oneness within the Divine. This territory of consciousness has never

been experienced before as a collective, and can only become the choice of the collective through individuated revelation and choice. It requires choosing acceptance of the Divine as Self. This is the field of Oneness from and to which we are all guided and instructed. From here, all desire rises from the heart as an impulse from the Divine. From here the fulfillment of all desire is revealed as Oneness. For the last several months, my own inner Life Coach continuously whispers, “Keep on going where you are being taken.” Life within and without now coaches each of us in this direction. We are being taken effortlessly into the realization of Oneness, and effortlessly into the fulfillment of our desires. Effortlessness is a coach, Beloved. There is really nothing left for us to do other than accept. Our motivation is now rising from the “being taken.” The concept of “being taken” is a coach. Let us rest in this “taken-ness.” Let us relax and become the observer. Let us say, “yes” to desires and their fulfillment. Let us be realized as Life’s Coach, and one with all Life. Herein we are set free in the Divinity of One as All there is—God! Desires are effortlessly fulfilled. Mission and purpose are effortlessly revealed. Life, Beloved, is coaching us from every expression of itself. And we are THAT! TaTa! Rev. Aries (March 21 – April 19) Happy birthday Aries! Trust the Universe when it comes to money and career. This is a time for meditation, visualization and planning. By patient and don’t push to accomplish your goals. It’s also important to forgive yourself for any mistakes you’ve made. Your frustrations will only block your ability to receive in the future! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Your soul is one with the Universe! It’s important to quiet your mind, think loving thoughts about yourself and treat yourself gently. You’ll be more in touch with your divine nature. You’ll gain insights into issues about relationships and self worth. The Universe is right there with you; you’re not alone! Releasing the negative “old tapes” in your head will transform you! Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Happy birthday Aries! Trust the Universe when it comes to money and career. This is a time for meditation, visualization and planning.

ideas about religion and spirituality. Remember, you’re just experimenting, so give yourself the option to grow and change, and even the ability to make mistakes! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

vate thoughts, they can help you heal!

areas in which you now feel so challenged!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

This is a time to be gentle with yourself. Changes are coming with regards to money and career. But your first priority is to get centered in your meditations. Clear intention and visualization come before manifesting your goals. Also make sure you’re treating your body right with good food and plenty of rest. When things move forward next month, you’ll be ready to jump on all the opportunities!

This is a great time to contact old friends and get re-involved in your interests. You could even be restarting an old relationship, or find new life in a connection you thought was kaput. Spend time with visualizations about the future. Your creative powers are very strong right now. Meditate on affirmations about the life you want to have and in the areas you want to heal!

If you’re having financial troubles, meditate on the messages you inherited from your parents. You’re able to free yourself from destructive mental habits about money. You’ll also uncover roots of trust and intimacy problems. Don’t be hard on yourself; instead, be grateful you’re seeing the way to freedom! Your difficult karma in these areas is complete and you can “write a new script”!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

Watch out for old patterns of negative thinking sneaking back into your mind. Meditate on your inner spiritual warrior and take a stand against all that crap! Don’t let yourself be a victim to your “inner judge”. Acknowledge yourself for improvements you’ve made in life. Ask close friends to remind you of your progress when you forget.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

Like your Aries and Leo friends, please be gentle and thoughtful. It’s time for pondering your future rather than pushing blindly ahead. Even if certain ideas make you excited, don’t act on your intuitions until the end of May. It’s also best to not talk about possibilities, since people could pass info along that causes difficulties for you when things don’t come to pass.

You’ve just got to stop being so hard on yourself! When you’re ashamed, you withdraw and people think you’re rejecting them—so they pull away and then you feel rejected! Let loved ones know about your “inner judge”. Talk to them when it tells you that you’re awful and not worthy of love. When people understand your pri-

Like your Virgo pals, you’ll have to beware of revisiting negativity you thought you’d mastered. It’s probably about relationships or issues about approval-seeking. This is like a spiritual final exam. You’re wrapping up many karmic patterns. Once you’ve moved through this stage of empowerment, you’ll have tremendous improvements in the

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Be flexible with ideas about yourself. Often you see changing your plans, ideals or attitudes as some sort of betrayal to your “real self”. It’s time to try out new concepts about yourself and about relationships. You’ll become more cooperative and relaxed with others. You might also open up to new

This is a great time to make a meditation space in your home. Let it be a sacred area that you don’t clutter up with “stuff”. As you sit quietly each day, you’ll spiritually “charge” that place with intuitive energy. It will be easier and easier to get centered when you meditate. Also, old issues or trust and rejection may surface. Your soul is clearing out painful memories so your heart can expand and receive more love! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Don’t fall into old dysfunctional communication patterns. It’s tempting for you to emotionally withdraw. Your reactions are about past hurts. Let your loved ones help you sort out your feelings. Often when relationships are ready to evolve to a new level of depth, you get unconsciously anxious, and shut your partner out. Please stay open and present! If single, an ex could reappear. Ponder deeply before jumping back in, making sure it’s what’s best for you.
