Dear Friend,

I tend to focus on the present. While I do set goals and plan for the future, my plans are tentative so I can change and grow as needed. So three years ago, when I (re)started Evolving, I wasn’t thinking about celebrating future anniversaries. But here we are, and it is a joyous occasion, indeed. Please join us on April 29 to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. As in previous years, we’ll have live music, food and more than 70 Evolving advertisers available to introduce you first hand to the modalities, products and services you read about each month. See our ad on page 20 for more information. This month also brings our first “Green” issue. With the grass in full green glory, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Kansas City’s green and environmental aspirations. The Eating Well in Kansas City section has plenty to get excited about, as well. Ana Anacio shares a delicious article about conscious eating; Brian L. Patton, author of The Sexy Vegan Cookbook provides a succulent description of kale and its uses; regular columnists, Bonnie Radicoff and Bethany Klug, delight as usual. It’s a delicious issue in every sense of the word. We also have a reader giveaway of four gift cards to Noodles & Company. See details of the contest on page 12. Here’s to living in the moment and celebrating the journey along the way. Happy Spring!

Mental Health America of the Heartland Awarded Grant Mental Health America of the Heartland (MHAH) has been awarded a $41,500 grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City for Sabbaths of Hope: The Next Steps Part II. This is a unique and innovative approach to assist those in crisis, stressed or struggling with life’s challenges. In today’s turbulent economic times, people feel like they are all alone or “can’t take it any more” and may be temporarily depressed due to their current life circumstances. This condition may lead to major clinical depression which is a debilitating medical illness that affects the whole person — emotional, physical, cognitive, social and spiritual aspects. Clinical depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 19 million Americans each year. Depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, complicates other medical conditions, and can be serious enough to lead to suicide. Depression can happen to anyone, at any age, and to people of any

race or ethnic group. It is never a “normal” part of life, no matter what one’s age, gender or health situation. Many people are afraid to seek help and fearful of those with mental disorders. MHAH believes that mental health issues can be treated successfully and that mental wellness is possible for everyone. MHAH has partnered with five local congregations to establish weekly depression support groups and monthly educational workshops, both of which are proven effective and efficient complements to mental health treatment. The free confidential support group is a safe place where people can come together and meet others who may be facing the same situation. This ongoing group, facilitated by a licensed mental health professional, offers people healthy ways to cope and strategies to improve their situation. People feel encouraged and can come as they choose. The monthly educational workshops provide up-todate information to persons with depression and related

mental health conditions that encourage wellness and recovery. Their families and significant others, care providers, community and healthcare professionals are also welcome to attend. MHAH recognizes the importance of education as a way to better cope with the challenges and stresses of everyday living and living mentally healthier lives. The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City provides leadership, advocacy and resources that eliminate barriers to quality health for the uninsured and underserved in Cass, Jackson and LaFayette counties in Missouri and Allen, Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Since it began grant making in 2005, HCF has awarded more than $140 million to agencies addressing health needs in the community. For more information, visit www.hcfgkc.org

News... 8th Annual Troost Avenue Festival The 2012 Troost Avenue Festival is set for Saturday, April 28 in the 3100 block of Troost Avenue, 12 noon to 10 p.m. The theme of the 8th Annual Troost Ave Festival is Growing a Village. Vendors and exhibitors showcase urban pioneering and community building projects as well as art, music, children’s activities, and the stories of Troost to encourage a vision of Troost as a “gathering place” rather than a “dividing line.” What was to become Troost Avenue was a Native American hunting path that transformed with the first white explorers and settlers into a trail past a huge slave plantation, then an exclusive street lined

by millionaires’ estates, and the hub of an eclectic urban life that fostered Jazz, Walt Disney, the Isis Theater, and a vibrant commercial center. Yet, for the past 40 years, following riots and “white flight,” Troost has been seen as the racial dividing line of the city — local broadcaster Walt Bodine referred to it as the “Berlin Wall of Kansas City.” Originators of the Festival, The Troost Folks, began a collaboration dedicated to integral community and have organized into the Troost Village Community Association, working on 501(c)(3) status. For more on the Troost Ave Festival visit www.troostvillage.org.

Redefining Healthy Masculinity for the 21st Century Global organization 45,000 strong is having an impact in local communities. The men and women, boys and girls living today must bring about one of the most essential cultural renewals in history. This great turning will be envisioned and built by men and women working together to create effective, supportive, resilient and accountable organizations, institutions and communities. At the ManKind Project, they believe the men who are a part of this work will need skills far beyond that of the "typical" man of the late 20th Century. To effectively do this essential work in the outside world, men need to do the difficult internal work that will successfully redefine masculinity for the 21st Century. Only men with highly developed creativity, resilience, compassionate discipline, emotional intelligence and adaptability will thrive. The men of the ManKind Project have taken a stand for a different kind of masculinity for the past 25 years. Men from all walks of life, of all faiths, beliefs and ages have benefited. George Daranyi,

Chairman of this international, not for profit organization states, “It takes men with courage and a willingness to challenge the status quo of ‘acceptable’ male behavior, real men willing take a good hard look at their actions and choices.” Daranyi describes the work of the ManKind Project as a safe and life affirming modern initiation for men that reinforces the strength and character of healthy masculinity while shining a light on the often hidden or denied traits that lead to the epidemics of male depression and reckless behaviors that top the headlines on the nightly news. On May 4, 2012, at the Chihowa Retreat Center in Perry Kansas, the New Warrior Training Adventure begins. This training allows a man to join a growing number of men’s groups across the country. Of which, there are 7 weekly groups in the Kansas City, Lawrence and Topeka area. To read more about this experience, learn about the community, or visit a men’s group in your area, visit www.mankindproject.org or www.kansascity.mkp.org or call Richard Renner at 913-648-0011.

his column and the “naked” movement itself are dedicated to looking at the places we “hide out” from our authenticity, or “play small” resisting the grandness of being born with unlimited potentiality. We can’t see these places of resistance to our unfolding with grace and ease unless two things happen. First, becoming “sick and tired” (literally) of doing what creates unhappiness for us; and second, being exposed to a role model(s) that is living with spiritual boldness. Since we are truly all in this together their story is your story. If they can live their dream...then so can you. Jenny Hahn and Stephanie Gray are two such role models. These two women hit a bottom with denying their Good by “not “ living a dream that had been in their hearts for many years. Here are their stories. Jenny: I was a perfectionistic overachieving art major back in college and learned all kinds of technique and principles and theory; but what I didn’t learn, was how to express myself and tap into my whole being. My inner critic was relentlessly brutal and the self-hatred and shame I felt reached dangerous levels. Then I found painting for process — it immediately helped me unlearn the “rules” of art and return to the presentmoment rawness of spontaneous creative expression. It helped me to face the inner critic and not give it power, find my authenticity and eventually my inner joy. I discovered that what I had said "no" to, my spirit needed in order to thrive. Less than a year ago, Stephanie Gray and I both took the leap of faith to quit our day-jobs to begin Creative Nectar Studio and share the gifts of process painting with the world. We facilitate workshops in a safe, non-judgemental environment and provide gentle, supportive facilitation that does not involve technique or critique. We encourage everyone to discover their own ambrosia one brushstroke at a time. Stephanie: I was not a visual artist before attending a process painting workshop in 1998 with Sarah Oblinger. I had no formal art training, so when a friend suggested I go, it brought up a lot of fear in me. But something was stirring deep inside at the possibility of it all. I knew I had to try. Something happened during that weekend workshop and I knew process painting would be with me for the rest of my life. Among other things, painting has taught me present-moment awareness and self love. This work is a powerful agent when working through any type of

loss. The more I painted the more I was sure my path was to share the process with as many as possible. Once I knew what I was supposed to do with my life, the old ways of being and moving through the world no longer worked, so I quit my day job. It was scary not knowing how it would look or how I would be supported. But, now I feel alive and on purpose for the first time in my life. Stephanie and Jenny are now coowners of their heart-mission, Creative Nectar Studio. Process painting is invited here, a brief retreat from your busy world to allow your creative flow to stay alive… like lubrication for the Spirit. The atmosphere of this non-judgmental environment is to allow the often-denied or “covered-up” inspiration that is within you to come through...not needing for your process to BE anything…just for you to BE. Lightness and liberation is the result. Personally, one of many untrue things I learned about myself in the educational system of my youth was that others were artists, because they could form shapes and forms — and I was not. When I heard about Creative Nectar Studio and the healing intention of these two amazing women, I realized I was going to remove another layer of “the lie.” Ah, getting Naked is grand…and Creative Nectar Studio will set you free! Like all of nature at this time…let the blossoming begin!!! "To find out about the juicy events at Creative Nectar Studio contact www.creativenectarstudio.com" Heidi Alfrey holds a Masters degree in Counseling and is a Unity minister, serving as one of the ministers at Unity Temple on the Plaza. Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Spring’s New Life Where there is sorrow, there is holy ground. —Oscar Wilde …winter always turns to spring. Never, from ancient times on, has anyone heard or seen of winter turning back to autumn. —Letter from Nichiren Daishonin

A

s darkness lessens and daylight lengthens, we welcome the new life of spring. This transition from cold to warmth, from dark to light, reminds us of the journey from our own darkness into light. It is easy to forget the purpose of walking this path when darkness, pain or sadness envelops us. Jamie Sams in Dancing the Dream: The Seven Sacred Paths of Initiation, speaks of the third path of initiation. This is the challenge to “face our fears and to look at all of our behaviors that may be coming from our ego’s sense of self-importance or our shadow side’s need to negate our sense of well being.” What is purpose of walking this path? Jamie Sams describes it in this way. “When we heal the imbalances created from our past wounds…we see our experiences from a new perspective. Eventually, if we let go of the past, we are able to be authentically grateful for our wounds, our harrowing experiences, and the brutality we may have endured. Through healing those wounds, we become healed healers who embrace our own suffering and transform our lives.” At this point a person may find the heart opening with new compassion for the suffering of others. The catalysts for this process are the challenges and obstacles in our daily lives. For some people this comes in the form of an inner darkness, like depression. Facing the black void courageously is a difficult but fruitful journey. The Senoi Indians, natives of the Upper Malaysian Peninsula, teach their children to face the nightmare figures in their dreams by facing the fearful images. When help arrives and the dreamer is safe, then he or she can dialogue with the powerful figure revealing his

or her power and purpose. Many times the images from the darkness are parts of ourselves that are undeveloped, unrecognized and need help from our conscious adult selves. As the person explores the darkness of abuse, trauma, addiction, pain or loss; protected by calling on help and calmed by the powerful injunction to take the needed time, he or she can face the fearful images, feelings or memories. By taking charge of the fearful experience, the person feels powerful and more alive. As this healing takes place, people reach out more to others, have a greater sense of the needs and pain of others and an ability to encourage and support them. This is very different from having other’s pain trigger our trauma. True compassion takes place when our pain, our ego can step aside and we come from the True Self, reaching out to the suffering person. In many traditions, this journey is called the shamanic path. In order to help others, one must go through trials, through death and rebirth. If we refuse to take this transformational path, we may suffer physical illness, emotional imbalances and relationship issues. Our environment will keep trying to get our attention until we are ready to embrace this process. As we experience longer days, I hope you find the courage to face whatever obstacle faces you today and walk the path into your inner light. Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes The Cleaner

T

he sun beamed through the kitchen bay windows. The dust on the oak floor looked as fine and white as the snow outside. My cleaner quit right after Christmas. Actually, I let her go as she had demanded double the pay. It did not feel right. I liked her so much and paid her a good wage so I just said, “I’ll do my own cleaning.” She had also cleaned our large yoga school space each week until it shone like a new dime. How could she leave me holding the mop? If you run a small business, most likely you make the choice to delegate. Asking and/or paying for help is a sign of leadership and wisdom. Recently, a friend was able to help clean the yoga school with green products. Now it is so much better than before as she loves this place as much as I do and cherishes the yoga philosophy called Saucha or “purity.” Yoga Saucha is the foundation of Yoga Niyama, or personal discipline. The reason is energy. When the body is dirty, it is holding onto past energy. When clothes are dirty, they are holding onto past energy. When the house is dirty, same. A dirty house carries “weight.” I’m sure you’ve discovered that when you have just cleaned up the whole house, vacuumed it, cleared out the cobwebs and changed the sheets; it feels lighter, it feels brighter, it feels more alive. That is

because you’ve removed a layer of the past. So, instructing students to be clean is instructing them to remove layers of the past and move into the present. To be cleaner is to become lighter, to become brighter, to shed a layer of yesterday and become more present in the moment. Also, Saucha enhances sensitivity, that is, sensitivity to your own body smell and sensitivity to the negative feeling that dirt brings. These gross sensitivities have to be cultivated for the later limbs of yoga, which require extreme sensitivity. I pride myself on a clean kitchen. So, sleeves rolled up after the cleaner left, I started to scrub. That led to the lower bath, where I stopped to shine the crystal candle holders. I began to clean and repair various things. There was the chair on Thanksgiving when Uncle Guy leaned back so hard from laughing that it made a cracking sound. My brother said he broke it. How could he break my Ethan Alan Chair? I found the super glue and a clamp to hold the frame in place. When you see it now, you will never notice the crack. As I polished and scrubbed, a whole layer of my past flew up like geese flying south for the winter. I remembered helping Mom scrub the huge country kitchen on the farm. I was thinking of how she enjoyed hiding behind her apron. It was hard for me to become “visible” as a teacher and speaker. The day before, someone in the classroom said something critical. It

hurt. I forgave myself for feeling vulnerable and kept scrubbing. The cleaning marathon led to the family room, the office, the hall, and soon the whole bottom floor sparkled with light and freshness. I really like cleaning up my stuff. As the ancient yogis knew, the real cleaning comes from within.

Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D. What’s Your “Gut” Instinct? Keeping Your Digestion in Balance

D

id you know milk doesn’t always do a body good, multigrains aren’t healthy for everyone; and, an apple a day may not keep the doctor away? Ask yourself these questions to see if gastrointestinal (GI) testing may be right for you. Do you frequently experience indigestion, constipation or unexplained diarrhea? Do you have gas & bloating, abdominal cramps or pain? Do you suffer from fatigue or consistently lack energy? Do you feel drowsy, headachy, have a fast heartbeat or sinus congestion after you eat? Do you have problems with mood swings, brain fog with focus and concentration issues? The digestive process involves cooperation between the pancreas, liver, small intestine, and large intestine as well as the immune and nervous systems. Poor GI health affects the other systems of the body leading to nervous and endocrine imbalances and sometimes an inappropriate immune response. The intestines are designed to absorb foods and nutrients and keep unwanted toxins, bacteria, fungi and undigested foods from entering your body. The cellular function of every organ in your body is dependent on nourishing substances obtained through eating food. That is why it is so important to ingest real food--fresh, whole food as fuel for the body. Some items we ingest that are not fresh, whole food include: caffeine, alcohol, sugar, artificial sweeteners, food additives and preservatives. GI health can be affected by a number of factors including emotional issues, stressful lifestyle, poor diet, repeated illness, medications and exposure to toxins. Food sensitivities are frequently the result of poor GI health. Unlike food allergies, which have immediate and recognizable effects, the symptoms from food sensitivities can occur up to 72 hours after eating, making the connection between the symptom and the food difficult to recognize. Before discomfort or disease develops, it is possible to determine whether food breaks down into usable substances, if certain nutrients are absorbed, and when proper elimination occurs. A healthy body also has beneficial bacteria to counteract the impact of "bad" bacteria, and produces and secretes enzymes, hormones and digestive chemicals. If you have had "gut" symptoms or have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, GERD, or food sensitivities, consider alternative stool testing. This testing can assess for compro-

mised intestinal barrier, food sensitivities, maldigestion, malabsorption, candida yeast overgrowth, bacterial overgrowth, and parasites. Food sensitivities can be detected in a blood test by measuring a special immune protein, immunoglobulin G (IgG). Once diagnosed, your health can often be improved by using nutrition with an elimination or rotation diet, probiotics, digestive enzymes and herbal treatment. Occasionally treatment with prescription medication may be needed. Medical foods with "gut" healing nutrients and anti-inflammatory ingredients can also be beneficial. To truly restore GI health, the health of the intestine must be addressed. The 3 R’s (Repair, Reset, and Recolonize) of GI Repair is a systematic, scientific approach to restoring intestinal health. Get to the root of the problem, not just treat symptoms. Treat each person as an individual as each person is unique and different. In many people with "gut" disorders, stress management to calm the nervous and immune symptoms is an important part of the treatment plan. Examples of potential strategies include: meditation, Tai Chi, massage therapy, EFT- emotional freedom technique & strengthening your inner wisdom or connection to God or the universe. If I may assist you on your journey to optimal health and wellness, I am happy to not only discuss "gut" health but how all the systems of the body work together with your mind and spirit. Begin your optimal health journey today.

n July of 2011, my wife and I were introduced to Access Consciousness via one of our clients. At first, we thought it was just another self -help program that requires a lot of will power and positive affirmations to show any results. Not so, over the next eight months, as we delved into learning the tools of Access Consciousness, we found that our lives dramatically changed for the better and there was no turning back! What is Access Consciousness™? Access is a set of tools, techniques and processes that are designed to facilitate consciousness in everyone. Consciousness is the awareness of everything without judgment and then choosing what is true for you. It is the willingness and capacity to be totally aware, totally present in all areas of your life. Consciousness is the ability to continually awaken to more possibility, more choice and more life! Let’s examine one of the basic Access tools. During your normal day, how much of the trauma/drama actually belongs to you? In Access, you learn that 98 percent of all the “stuff” you deal with everyday is owned by someone else! Let’s try an exercise. For the next three days, every time a perceived problem or issue comes up, ask yourself, "To whom does this belong?" It won’t take long to realize that the stress you endure on a daily basis, truly does belong to your boss, your customer, your spouse, your kids and the thousands of unconscious persons, places and things that are trying to make their issues yours! By the third day, it becomes natural and most folks find that their lives are filling with ease and glory! How does it get any better than that? In Access, questions empower you so let’s ask another one, “What’s right about this situation?" Asking this question immediately allows more choices to flow to you, easily, with joy and lots of glory. You may not like the choices-however you always have a choice-always! After a while, you will find a sense of ease knowing that you do not have to immediately react; and, can choose to not react at all! The foundation of Access Consciousness™ is Access BARS.™ The BARS are 32 points on the head that a BARS practitioner facilitates running energy through. It is stress reduction, extraordinaire. When your new clarity of thought goes wonky, have another BARS session; or even better, take the class and learn how to do this remarkable technique that you can facilitate for your family and friends. Massage therapists even get CEU’s, how does it get any better than that? Living a conscious lifestyle in this reality is not easy. As a society we have been taught to live in a one conclusion after another reality, judging everything and feeling trapped by every moment of the day. The second we realize that we are all infinite beings, that 98 percent of what is going on in our lives is just an interesting point of view belonging to someone else, that we always have a choice, and we can live life with ease, joy and glory. How does it get any better than that?

Eating Well in Kansas City Healthy Bytes Healthy And Fast: Noodles & Company Offers More Than 100 Different Menu Combinations All Under 500 Calories Health-Conscious, Vegetarian, Vegan, & Gluten Intolerant Foodies Can Enjoy A Fresh Meal Within Their Eating Plan Without Sacrificing Delectable Taste Noodles & Company, the fast-casual eatery, which offers noodles, salads and sandwiches from around the world, and has nine locations throughout the Kansas City metro, now offers more than 100 different combinations for meals under 500 calories. Travel the globe without leaving the table and experience real food with real ingredients. Diners can mix-and-match nearly everything on the Noodles & Company menu by starting with a small entrée, adding a small soup, salad, protein, or extra to create a meal that is on-point with the health-conscious’ meal plan. Noodles & Company has something for everyone as it addresses special eating habits by offering vegan, glutenfree, vegetarian, low sodium or low fat menu options and it’s all in the details: Real Food With Real Ingredients We believe a great meal starts with the best ingredients. We use real aged Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs and Italian seasoning to make our Parmesan Crusted Chicken. We make it thin and grill it on both sides to sear in the juices. Our Thai Curry Soup is made from more than 30 authentic ingredients including galangal, kefir lime, lemongrass, red chili, tamarind and coconut fried shallots. Fresh Vegetables-Lots of Them We have 14 vegetables on our menu that we prep and chop fresh every day. We encourage our guests to add some color to their bowl by adding and swapping veggies. Pasta Isn’t Just Pasta It all starts in the field with #1 hard amber durum wheat. It's what gives our pasta the al dente texture, bright amber color and nutty wheat taste. It isn't a coincidence. The wheat in our pasta is grown exclusively by Dakota Growers Pasta Company in Carrington, North Dakota. They mill 100% of their raw materials using top-of-the-line Italian pasta-making machinery and technology. It costs more, but we think it's worth it. Noodles By The Experts Our signature udon noodles found in our Japanese Pan Noodles also are made exclusively just for us. We work closely with Noodle masters in Brooklyn, New York so these thick, chewy noodles absorb sauce and caramelize just right. Our Japanese Pan Noodles recipe was inspired by a town in Japan called Yakiudon. This item has been on our menu since we opened our doors in 1995 and it has very loyal fans. We hope you're one of them. And nothing is more authentic than our rice noodles. We buy them from a company in Thailand that the Thai locals buy for their meals. They call them "long life noodles" because they signify a long life to the person eating them. Because of this, the noodles are never cut or shortened in the belief that it would be bad luck and would shorten that person's life. So we don't cut ours either. Looking For Local We make sure we have the freshest ingredients available year round. It makes a huge difference in flavor. In Oregon we've been trying a pilot program of sourcing more and more locally and partner with local farms like Howard Calcagno Farms. They provide us with our romaine lettuce, herbs and napa cabbage delivered from field to bowl in just days. We're looking to do more of this in other areas.

his month we explore the flavors of Argentina “In the Kitchen” at the exquisite Piropos Restaurant in Briarcliff Village. (By the way, a “piropo” is a flirtatious or poetic compliment given to a woman). Owner Christina Worden, once a beauty queen in her country, received many such “compliments” (according to her husband). Early in her career, Christina came to America where she met and married Gary Worden. A pilot and sportsman, he brought his bride to Parkville to make their home. The Piropos Grill (first of two restaurants) began as an investment property for the Wordens. Once created, the couple became attached to the project and decided to make it their own. Christina “never believed she would one day be a restaurateur.” But in mid-life, she explains, we sometimes re-invent ourselves…giving us the opportunity to follow our passions. Many of the spices, ingredients and wines are flown in from Argentina to preserve the authenticity of the country’s flavors. The food of Argentina represents a melting pot of primarily European cultures (Christina is half Italian & half Polish). Growing up, her home was always filled with family, friends, empanadas (usually 12 different varieties) and Malbeck. Christina is devoted to capturing the foods and ambiance of her childhood for their diners.

he warm weather is back and it’s time to give your body, mind and spirit some spring cleaning with a juice fast. The right juicer makes all the difference in the taste and nutrient value of the juice as well as the ease of use and clean up. Centrificating or basket juicers are tempting due to their low cost. They are the least efficient, meaning you get less juice. They also heat the juice resulting in oxidation, which destroys much of its nutritional value. You may notice a darker color, a metallic taste or lots of foam. Many don’t handle leafy greens well, such as kale. They can be hard to clean and don’t withstand daily use. Masticating worm gear juicers are a better choice. These crush the produce around a worm shaped augur. Masticating juicers extract more juice for the same amount of produce without heating it, and are easy to clean. Even more efficient is a triturating juicer, which crushes the produce between two gears. These machines are slower and some force is required for root vegetables such as carrots. Triturating juicers are excellent for juicing wheatgrass. There is a clear difference in taste, kick and amount of juice over a masticating juicer. The most efficient and expensive juicer is the hydraulic press. Most work in two stages. The first triturates or cuts up the produce. Then the produce is placed in a filter cloth and pressed. A hydraulic press juicer produces 50 – 100 percent more juice for the same amount of produce. According to one company, the nutrient content is two to five times greater. It’s a difference I can taste and feel. This kind of juicer is also most time consuming to use, but the juice from a

hydraulic press can be stored for three days. Juice from any other type of juicer should be consumed right away. The Gerson Institute recommends a hydraulic press juicer for their cancer and other disease management programs. There isn’t a perfect juicer. For instance, David and I own a hydraulic press juicer for most juicing, but find the masticating worm gear juicer superior for wheat grass. My favorite book on juice fasting, Juice Fasting and Detoxification by Steve Meyerowitz, as well as many others, advocate carrot juice. Nearly everyone today has some degree of insulin resistance which is aggravated by the sugars in carrot juice. I cannot recommend it. Instead, I recommend a base of 80 percent celery and cucumber and 20 percent leafy greens, sprouts or non-sweet root vegetables such as radish, turnip or burdock. Lemon, lime, pepper and ginger can be added for flavor. For more details on juice fasting click the Blog link on my website: www.bethanyklug.com.

Eating Well in Kansas City Feature—by Ana Inacio Conscious Indulgence

F

ood is energy! It is physical energy and spiritual energy. We are One with what we eat. But not all food is ingested equally. This has nothing to do with its physical composition and everything to do with how we eat it. We are creating the food as we consume it. We can create joy, pleasure, guilt, indifference or anger to name a few feelings. Our beliefs can produce weight loss or weight gain, health or illness, energy or lethargy. We are what we eat as our bodies assimilate with the vibration of what we consume.

• • •

Have you ever noticed how some people make food taste so good? The taste of love, excitement and contentment shines through. Simply with their innate passion, the creator has imbued his/ her food with high-vibration energy. But just imagine what we can do with conscious intention. Blessed food is given the power to heal, love and support the person consuming it. The physical form of the food matters only in what we perceive to be its attributes. The subconscious qualities we assign to foods (good, bad, fatty, healthy, painful or joyful) dictate how our food is processed energetically. We are the creator of what we consume and prepare. For some of us, eating food is mainly an unconscious behavior: we eat what is readily available, what is convenient, what is tasty, what we are craving and we may even binge. For others, eating is an ultra-conscious behavior: we label foods as good or bad, we count every calorie on our diet, we restrict ourselves to only "high vibration" foods and eating becomes a chore. Many swing back and forth between the two extremes. A constant cycle where the love/fear relationship with food has become the captain of the ship. We have forgotten that food is merely the vehicle for whatever energy we are using to fuel our minds, bodies and spirits. We are the captains of our ship when we consciously fuel our bodies. So how do we overcome our fears? Conscious indulgence is balancing our sensual desires, listening to what our body is communicating and practicing eating as a form of prayer. Each item that passes our lips does so with our blessing and love. The way we create food and consume it takes on new meaning. This form of love vibrates in alignment with our bodies, creating a wholeness that radiates from inner to outer.

conscious eating. •

In one’s daily life this is the practice of intentional thinking. Intentional thinking is an awareness that you are in control of your thought process. It is to release attachment to the thoughts that constantly flow through our minds and allow them to pass through uninhibited. The next step is to purposefully create a new thought you would like instead. Each time we do this we are physically creating new connections and pathways in our brain. This retrains our subconscious. An example would be allowing the thought, “I shouldn’t eat this brownie because it will lower my vibration,” to pass through without attachment and replacing it with, “As I send love into this brownie, I am consuming love. My body is nourished.” The physical shell of the brownie becomes a container for the loving energy you produce with your beliefs, intentional thoughts and feelings. With wholehearted intention and by blessing our food, we allow the food to BE what it has the potential to BE: a vessel of love and light.

Tips on raising the vibration of what you consume: Raise your awareness: How do you feel before you take that first bite or start to prepare your food? Take a moment to center, connect with Spirit and clarify your intentions. Cook with love, ask the Divine to prepare the food through your hands. Take time to enjoy the preparation and cooking of your meal. Envision beams of light from your heart traveling into your food or drink. Ask your food or drink to match the vibration of your heart. Savor each bite that you take. Attune your food to the vibration of "Om" by toning before your meals. Give gratitude to your food for being the highest vibration of love and light. Thank your food for providing complete nutrition to your body, mind and soul. Bless your food, “back to seed.” This prayer touches every aspect of that food’s journey to your table. From the soil and water in which it grew, to the driver who delivered it to the store, to the chef who prepared it. Imagine the food filled with loving light. See the cellular structure of food as aligned in a perfect and whole pattern. Have fun with your food! When we feel joy, we eat joy, we are joy.

Feature—by Brian L. Patton Kickin’ It With Kale

R

process, to keep it from getting soft and mushy. Finish cooking your soup or stew, then cut off the heat and stir in the kale. Let it sit for 4 to 5 minutes, then let the tongue scalding begin.

ecently, a friend asked me, “How can I make kale yummy?” It occurred to me that perhaps a lot of people are new to the nutritional powerhouse that is kale. Maybe you only know it as that curly green thing underneath your potato salad, or shoved in between the ground beef and the New York strips in your butcher’s display case. It does look quite nice, but it is severely underutilized as a garnish. Loaded with calcium, iron, potassium, vitamins A, C, and K, and even some protein, you’d be much better off eating the kale, and tossing the potato salad. Here are five simple things you can do to make your kale yummy.

Drink it. Whaaaaat?? How the heck can I drink a bunch of leaves? Put it through your juicer, silly. With life-changing documentaries like Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead approaching the mainstream, juicing has become more popular than ever. You, of course, could not eat an entire bunch of kale at once, but by turning it into juice, you can consume the powerful, supercharging nutrients of said bunch all in one shot! Start with a combination of kale (including the stems), carrot, celery and apples, then add other fruits and veggies for variety. Squeezing in a little fresh lemon juice will help your body absorb the iron that kale has to offer, and it will also balance out its bitterness. Super -mega juicing tip: Since it’s not as curly as green kale, lacinato kale (a.k.a. dinosaur or black kale) is easier to cram into juicers that have smaller feeding tubes. You’re welcome. So, go ahead and juice that kale! You’ll be sporting a Jack LaLane spandex onesie in no time.

Eat it raw. Eating a salad comprised solely of raw kale is a little tough to take. Kale has pretty intense flavor and a tough texture. But if you want to give your salad a nutritional shot in the arm, simply remove the leaves from the stem, chop them up, and mix with other lettuces, like romaine, leaf, or butter. The added flavor and texture will, ahem, (switch to fancy voice) dance wonderfully across the palate and create a unique mouth-feel. Wow, I watch way too much Top Chef. Massage it. Massaging is a technique used with raw kale in order to both tenderize it and remove a good portion of its bitterness. Remove the kale leaves from the stem, cut them into 1 inch wide ribbons, and place them in a large bowl. For one bunch of kale, add 1 teaspoon of kosher or sea salt, the juice of half of a lemon, and a touch of olive oil (optional), then begin to rub it all around the kale. You must continually massage the salt, lemon, and oil into all of the leaves for 2 to 3 minutes. After this time has elapsed, you will notice that the kale has wilted a bit and it will have a much milder flavor. Now it’s ready to become a salad. Add other veggies, fruits, and nuts and dress simply with a little agave nectar, and lemon juice and olive oil, if needed. Both delicious and energizing, a massaged kale salad always comes with a happy ending.

So, go ahead and juice that kale! You’ll be sporting a Jack LaLane spandex onesie in no time. Blanch it. Blanching is the process of boiling something for a very short amount of time. You need only bring a pot of water to a boil, add a pinch of salt, and you’re ready to go. Depending on what veggie you’re using, blanching times will vary. To blanch kale, remove the leaves from the stem and roughly chop them. Submerge the kale in the boiling water and remove it after 20 seconds. Immediately cool the leaves by running them under cold water, or plunging them into a bowl of ice water, known as an ice bath. This keeps the kale from overcooking, and re-

tains its deep green color. Drain it, and squeeze out as much water as possible. Now tender, with the bitterness removed, your blanched kale is perfect on a pizza, in a lasagna, or as a simple cold side dish with a drizzle of sesame oil and a dash of soy sauce or tamari. Soup it. Kale is a fantastic way to add a whole bunch of extra goodness to soups and stews. Remove the leaves from the stem and cut them into 1 inch wide ribbons. Personally, I enjoy the texture of the kale, so I add it at the very end of the cooking

Feature—by Jill Dutton Communion & Conversations with Richard Bach On May 19, 2012, the VALA Gallery in Mission, KS is coordinating a once-in-alifetime opportunity to share an afternoon of "Communion and Conversations" with best-selling author Richard Bach via SKYPE. To find out how such an event came to occur, I spoke with both Richard Bach and Penny Thieme, owner of VALA Gallery.

E

ighteen years ago I had the unique opportunity to interview Richard Bach for Evolving Woman. The interview was a momentous one for me as it was my first interview with a “real” author, who was also one of my personal heroes. Because he was so generous with his time and willing to talk with the publisher of a humble little publication, he gave me the courage to pursue my dream. Even before that first interview, Richard Bach’s writing and his insights had a profound impact on how I live this wonderful journey called life. No coincidence, I discovered Richard’s work during a vulnerable period just after my father passed. My beliefs were fragile and as yet unformed. His teachings helped me to envision and transform my life. So it was with great honor that I spoke with Richard Bach again, this time to learn about an exciting, rare event coming to Kansas City, find out about his latest book and ask a few personal questions. EVOLVING: Did you realize the profound impact you would have when you started sharing your writing? RICHARD BACH: Writing Jonathan Livingston Seagull was such an unusual event. It was so strange…the way it was just handed to me. I had tears in my eyes while writing it and still can’t read it without tears. I thought it would have a big impact on people like myself. It went through a lot of rejections, like ideas do before they are fully manifest; and, I didn’t think it would receive such widespread attention. Over the years, quite a number of people have said Jonathan was their first introduction to this unusual way of thinking -- that there’s more to this world than meets the eye. Jonathan found people who were open to that idea. I was just a beginning writer when Jonathan came along. If I had thought, “This is an interesting idea,” I would have shut it down. Like everyone, my work is surrounded by a wall of self-consciousness. Instead, I just wrote the story.

EVOLVING: I’m curious as to what you’ve been up to in the 18 years since we last spoke. Do you have a new book coming out? RICHARD BACH: It’s just a little book called Thank Your Wicked Parents: Blessings from a Difficult Childhood. It’s a little book of blessings, because so often we are lead through something that seems like abuse and later realize it’s the best thing that could have happened. Being kicked out of the house at 13 because I didn’t clean my room became a great blessing of independence. We should thank our parents for abusing us. Our reactions to that kind of abuse demonstrate and shape the strength of the person we’re going to become. So much is discussed about child abuse these days and so many have been through it. We’ve reached that point within us that quietly says, “I’m glad for that and would live it over.” — because something in me stiffened its resolve. There are people giving great gifts who came from abuse. They now use that power to change the world. Thank Your Wicked Parents will be released in the United States, June 2012. EVOLVING: And now, a sweet visionary named Penny Thieme comes into your life. Tell me how the Communion and Conversations with Richard Bach event evolved. RICHARD BACH: Penny wrote me out of the blue and I was so impressed with her sense of mission and enthusiasm. She decided something should be in the world, realized no one was doing it and decided she’d better do it. When I see someone like this, I ask what can I do to help? This will be my first time doing a SKYPE event. I’ve always been traveling around performing on stages, so this will be the first time to informally sit at my desk and do a question and answer session electronically. I’m really really looking forward to it. This event is a huge gift for me. I’m going to say, "Hey, for all my love of flight, commercial air isn’t included." What’s going to be fun is to have the event without all the traffic and travel. If that works I’ll be doing a whole lot more of these events. So she has given me a great gift. In one of her messages to me, Penny said she’s just one person. So often we get that sense of what can I do? I’m just one person. Ideas are magnetic. When we get an idea, it draws others in. I told her, “I would love to do this, you’re doing me a

favor. Thank you. Thank you.” If we have an idea or goal we’re striving for, let someone else in on it and chances are they will say, “Let me help you, how can we make this happen?” And it grows exponentially. That is what she has done and I am so happy to be part of expressing her ideas. If it goes on to be positive for those attending, there will be even more rainbows splashing out. Penny has dropped this enchanted stone in an enchanted pond and it will be beautiful. *

As Richard Bach was generous with his time and helped me so many years ago to find my confidence, strength and vision, now he is doing so with Penny Thieme, owner of VALA Gallery. I spoke with Penny to get her thoughts on this incredible event. EVOLVING: Penny, please, tell me how you happened to approach Richard Bach. What motivated you to do something so out of the box? PENNY THIEME: You might say Richard Bach himself motivated me to think outside the box and go where my imagination wanted to go. Intuitively, I knew he was to be a part of VALA. I was trying to figure out a way that the VALA Gallery could create an event that would bring together the community, show support for our local artists and provide an opportunity to learn from one of the greatest spiritual writers of our time. EVOLVING: So how are you integrating the aspects of VALA (Visual, Audio and Literary Artists) in this event? PENNY THIEME: I have put out a call for artists to create works inspired by Richard Bach for a juried exhibition of visual art, poetry/prose and musical compositions and performances. The work will be on display at the Johnson County Central Resource Library (9875 W 87th St., OP, KS 66212) during the month of May and will be part of the VALA documentary about the creative collective of our region. We will also have an artist reception at the library on May 12, 9:30-1:00 to meet some of the visual artists and enjoy music and poetry inspired by Richard Bach. Though I hope the exhibition honors Richard, I want to challenge artists to take in his work, see what resonates or does not; then create a work that expresses their own ideas and sensibilities and challenge themselves to push beyond that.

here is a great awakening taking place all over the world. People are realizing that the Industrial Agricultural system that is supposed to feed us is actually poisoning us and our home planet, Earth. Industrial agriculture is the most environmentally destructive of all human actions. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN found that agriculture and deforestation for ranching, palm oil plantations and food crops produce about one third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Vast landscapes that once consisted of diverse forests and prairies and whole communities of living beings have been turned into food-growing factories. Industrial Agricultural is based on monoculture, the growing of a single crop in a field. This is in sharp contrast to the diversity and complexity of native ecosystems. To carry this off requires the use of non-renewable petrochemical fuel, herbicides and pesticides, all of which are toxic poisons. Today, it takes ten calories of these petrochemicals to produce one calorie of food on your plate. That one calorie of food comes to us at an unacceptable high cost to our health and the health of the living biosphere. There is a picture of a white clapboard church in Iowa surrounded by a farm field. The field is five feet lower than the churchyard, though it was level when the church was built in 1870. This shows that five feet of the richest prairie soil on Earth, living soil that took tens of thousands of years to grow, eroded and washed down the river to become Louisiana and foul the Gulf waters with excess nutrients. It was the farmer and his plow that destroyed the priceless ecological capitol of those fields. It is the cult of the Lawn today, farmers, suburban homeowners, golf courses and ball field keepers, who have helped to create a five thousand mile dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico with their death-a-cide runoff from weed and insect poison. There is also a spiritual malaise in our culture. People have lost their anchor to what is real, to what matters. They sit in buildings and rush around in metal boxes. They live with Brad or Angelina or Jenn or Oprah. They walk as zombies on the planet of their birth and allow it to be destroyed for their comfort and pleasures. They could be in orbit in a metal world of technological marvels, for all they know. They don’t really live on Earth. Would a conscious, spiritually aware People allow the destruction of their life support system? Parents are afraid to let their children run and play outdoors, so they sit in front of the TV and are shown all the sweet processed poison food they could desire. They are taught to be part of the culture of fear and death. From the bright glowing screen they learn that they are not good enough unless they have this thing or that thing or look a certain way. Humans have evolved over two million years,

We were once a part of the gift economy of the biosphere. We were part of the Flow, the cycles of life, the Real. Those who study hunter–gatherer cultures found that they had spent three or four hours a day meeting their physical needs and spent the rest of their day singing, dancing, playing and loving. Many of us are seeking to reconnect, to go back to our roots, to be fully human. I believe that Paradise Gardening can help us connect to the Source, to integrate ourselves back into the community of life. To be in a Paradise Garden helps us feel human and connected to what is real, to be present in the Now. We don’t want poison in our food. We want to grow food in a way that will protect our way of life for our great, great, grandchildren and their grandchildren’s children. Most human cultures have the story of the original Paradise Garden, Eden. Some say that the rise of agriculture about ten thousand years

ago was the original sin, the action that expelled us from Paradise. We paved Paradise and put up a parking lot, according to Joni Mitchell. We lost our connection to nature and our genetic heritage. There is a way to reconnect, to re-sync, by going back to the Garden. Paradise is a garden where everything we need is provided. You don’t do "work" in a Paradise Garden, it is a way of life, a way of being. It’s a way of seeing the world as inner connections and potentialities. There is only abundance and gratitude in our Paradise Gardens. The worries, frustrations and anger of our day-to-day lives melt away as we step over the threshold of our garden. We must look to nature as our guide in creating our paradise. The guiding principle is diversity and cooperation. We want many plants and animals to inhabit our garden with us. They will help us reconnect with the cycle of life, the flow of energy and resources given to us by life it self. Our Paradise Gardens should consist mainly of berries, fruit and nut trees along with perennial food, medicinal and fiber plants. We want plants that form beneficial relationships with the microorganisms that take nitrogen from the air and make it available to their plant partners. We want plants that are food and shelter for beneficial insects and animals. Kansas City is the perfect place for Paradise Gardening. We live in the Prairie Parkland temperate bioregion. We had a mixture of prairie and hardwood forest before the white man. Normally, we have abundant rain and rich deep soils in the river bottoms and rolling hills. We shouldn’t plant fruit in monoculture orchards; we should spread the trees around our neighborhoods so the pests and problems can’t jump from one to the next like dominos falling. Why not grow sweet potatoes in the park, front yards, schools and businesses as edible landscaping? We need to grow our annual crops in the floodplains where the soils are renewed by periodic flooding. We need to have gardens outside the kitchen door of all the homes in Kansas City. We need distributed polyculture tended by a new generation of urban farmers, an Ecosystem Manager who has steeped in Permaculture principles and the wisdom of our elders. We have to relearn the ways of those who fed our grandparents until the time when we each have a Paradise Garden to BE in. Steve Mann is the site developer with Cultivate Kansas City and a gardening educator with Food Not Lawns Kansas City. He does sustainable agriculture consulting and design through his business, Prairie Ecosystems Management.

Going Green: A Call for Community

The Cannabis Files

J

ust imagine, if you knew and cared about all of your neighbors in the streets around your home. Imagine if your daily life was based locally, so all of your work, joy, social interests and food came from a 5-10 mile radius of your home. Imagine your children or grandchildren being safe outside your home, learning responsibility for themselves and their environment. Imagine knowing where your food comes from and tasting the freshness and vitality in every bite. Imagine everywhere you went, an air of connection, support and cooperation flowing throughout your community. In the words of a traveling child, “Are we there yet”? Well, this is part of my dream of a "Green" life. Our bodies came from the earth and I believe we all deeply love this planet, no matter how we show it. As for the present moment, the actions of our beloved two-legged species are unsustainable. So what does “going Green” mean? Is it our noble deeds like installing solar panels, growing vegetables on our lawn, recycling our newspapers, converting to electric cars? Or perhaps it is a degree beyond even that. Even if we recycle every item in our fridge, attend all church functions and heat our homes on geothermal power…if we’re calling our neighbor an ass behind his back, we’re missing the greatest point: It is the loving energy flowing through our actions that creates the magic. I believe that our empowered and golden thriving future is in the energy that we put behind our “Green” actions. Energy is the building block of all of our experiences. Our 3D reality is a projection of the energetic vibration of the collective consciousness. It is through the evolution of our openness, authenticity, involvement, forgiveness and acceptance of one another that our way will be paved to a new way of living…A way of living in harmony and natural flow with our planet. We all called for a shift in consciousness and here we are, slap-bang in the middle of it. Earth changes are happening right here in the Mid-West. And, it is our energy, our vibration and inner truth about what we wish for each other that will make the difference for this planet. So, I am calling for community…the attitude, the vibration of community… living from the heart. In this vibration

we transmute competition to cooperation; one person has a solution to another’s concern. Good ideas become great ideas. Happiness is paid forward exponentially. I believe the future is bright. Our physical life reflects our consciousness. When enough of us go to the Green color of our heart chakras, and raise our vibration together, I believe many new technologies will surface which are far beyond our current comprehension. There are phenomenal ways to create renewable energy and grow food sustainably; just think, Nicola Tesla designed free wireless electricity over 100 years ago! So what now? There is so much available on our doorsteps. For community inspiration in Kansas City go to the Troost Ave Festival on April 28th, where they are intending to create a sustainable village. Visit the wonderful Urban Farming Guys also in KC. Otherwise, smile at people in the street… see how it makes you feel and reverberates onto the next thing you do. Plant some vegetables in your garden JUST TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Talk to your neighbors. You may not like every one, but you can love ANYONE. The future’s bright. The future’s Green.

here is a movement afoot in Missouri in the form of a petition to Legalize and Regulate Cannabis/Hemp."ShowMeCannabis Regulation" (SMCR) needs 150,000 qualified petition signatures by April to place it on the November ballot helping to end the failed policy of Cannabis prohibition in Missouri. It will allow the people to decide! SMCR is an organization of individuals who believe that Cannabis prohibition is a failed policy, and that regulating Cannabis similarly to alcohol & tobacco would better control the production, distribution and consumption of Cannabis/Hemp than the current criminal market system. Last year nearly 30 million Americans met the consumer demand for Cannabis from illegal, criminal markets. SMCR seeks to address these problems by returning control of Cannabis/Hemp to government and regulated businesses rather than criminal and often violent enterprises. Criminal enterprises have complete control of these markets in a manner very similar to the days of alcohol prohibition. To date, California, Oregon and Colorado are just three of the states that have laws regulating the use and growing of Cannabis. SMCR is engaging Missourians in a serious, public discussion about the issues associated with Cannabis consumption, including Industrial Hemp, Medical Cannabis and public safety. Before Cannabis was made illegal in 1937, most every physician prescribed Cannabis as a viable medicine for his or her patients. Also, Missouri was one of the top hemp-producing states in the country, and was even noted in the WWII government-produced film, “Hemp for Victory” as an ideal place for its production. Since 2009, more than $300 million dollars flowed out of the United States to meet the consumer demands of a booming agricultural Hemp industry. Most of that money went to China. Cannabis has also been used for thousands of years as an essential food source and medicine. In many Indigenous cultures, Cannabis is considered a "Sacred Plant". Cannabis is a safe, non-toxic food and medicine as opposed to alcohol, pharmaceuticals and tobacco. In several recent studies, Cannabis has been found to have NO known toxicity in humans. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated not only the safety of Cannabis, but also the efficacy in treating a vast number of very serious diseases and illnesses.

Cannabis has been shown to be effective in treating Cancer, Glaucoma, HIV/ AIDS, Crohn’s, Alzheimer’s, Autism, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, MS, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Cerebral Palsy, PTSD, Strokes, the list goes on. And there are NO toxic side effects as with pharmaceuticals. Thousands of "Medical Cannabis" patients rely on a daily dose of Cannabis to control their symptoms and return them to a healthy and productive life. Cannabis is truly a whole food providing the body with complete nutritional value, it is only through heating that the THC is activated. The old adage "Let Your Food Be Your Medicine and Your Medicine Be Your Food" couldn't be more apropos than it is with the Cannabis plant! Federal Cannabis prohibition was meant to protect society from what was wrongly perceived as a grave threat to public health and safety. Unfortunately, the very act of prohibition has created a situation exactly opposite of its intention. In 2009 alone, 858,408 Americans were arrested for Cannabis law violations, more than one-half of all total drug arrests, overwhelming the prison system and law enforcement. The time has come to acknowledge that cannabis would be more effectively controlled if it were regulated like alcohol and tobacco. If you would like to help end the failed policy of Cannabis prohibition in Missouri, please visit www.show-mecannabis.com to learn more about this important issue. Be a part of this historic effort to create a sensible Cannabis/Hemp policy of taxation and regulation in the State of Missouri. Also you can listen to Reenie Carmack and Jane VanBenthusen Monday, March 19th, 6:00 pm on KKFI 90.1 FM "EcoRadio" for a discussion based on the film: "What If Cannabis Cured Cancer."

Feature—by Joan Polifka The Green Impact Zone

…Like trying to drink from a fire hose.” That’s how Public Relations Coordinator, Barbara Hensley, describes implementing the ambitious, multi-pronged, revitalization initiative called the Green Impact Zone – an initiative that targets a depressed 150-square block area of Kansas City, MO, east of Troost Avenue. The Green Impact Zone is unique in that it is a national model for a place-based approach to revitalizing a community; that is, an approach that selects a specific, distressed area and then seeks to transform that area through intense, focused coordination of programs and resources. In the third quarter of 2009, Missouri U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver II, aware of the some 40 years of blight and disenfranchisement experienced by the neighborhoods of the Zone, saw the opportunity of need and funding come together with the release of federal stimulus dollars. He also realized that energy conservation, efficiency and sustainability, mantras of the 21st century, had to be an integral part of the transformation. The boundaries of the Green Impact Zone, encompassing five neighborhoods, were so defined because within these neighborhoods already existed a degree of community and cohesion. With voluntary neighborhood associations already in place, the initiative is tapping into this involvement to ignite and foster lasting change. Each neighborhood is headed by a block captain who cultivates neighborby-neighbor participation through newsletters, meetings and community events. It is the vision of the neighborhood leaders – to have a better quality of life – that underlies the Zone’s vision. Nevertheless, realizing the limitations among neighborhood volunteers in terms of time, experience and expertise, the long-standing Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), a regional planning organization that serves Kansas City and nine surrounding counties, hired a dedicated Zone staff and oversees, guides and assists in coordinating the array of programs and funding sources that make up the Green Impact Zone effort. By the autumn of 2009, the multi-pronged initiative was launched with strategies to tackle issues of housing, employment, infrastructure, energy efficiency and weatherization, public safety and community services, urban gardening, education of youth and neighborhood outreach. The initiative is now only two and a half years old, but progress is already evident. Following are a few examples: Housing Housing, especially, requires capital and special knowledge and skills; yet strides have been made in rehabilitating and repurposing old buildings, promoting home ownership (Wells Fargo has donated 32 foreclosed properties) and is conscientiously demolishing homes by reusing and recycling materials.

The boundaries of the Green Impact Zone, encompassing five neighborhoods, were so defined because within these neighborhoods already existed a degree of community and cohesion. With voluntary neighborhood associations already in place, the initiative is tapping into this involvement to ignite and foster lasting change. Employment and Training Building green job skills is an important component of getting people back to work in the Green Impact Zone. Individuals are learning how to deconstruct buildings incorporating reuse and recycling of materials as mentioned above. They are also being trained in the weatherization of homes and installation of new electric meters and other equipment which helps residents better manage their energy use. Another skill being fostered is concrete refinishing. Sidewalks, steps, retaining walls and foundations have been repaired reducing storm water drainage problems while leading to permanent jobs. Infrastructure There are already visible improvements in the once crumbling sidewalks, curbs and streets. Also, a new bridge opened at Troost Avenue and Volker Boulevard. In addressing public transportation, a bus rapid transit service has been brought to the Zone, called the Troost MAX service, which features hybrid electric buses and previous park-and-ride lots. Energy Efficiency KCP& L has created the Smart Grid Demonstration Project in and around the Zone introducing the latest in innovative technologies in energy efficiency. Thousands of smart meters have been installed providing wireless communication connections between utility and its customers. Through this same project a Green Zone school has been awarded a contract for installing a solar roof. Weatherization of homes is encouraged through outreach efforts by the Zone staff who raise awareness of residents about the assistance available from the Low-Income Weatherization Assistance Program. This program has already weatherized dozens of homes. Another program, Energy Works KC, serves the Zone, among other neighborhoods, by offering access to loans and rebates for those seeking more energy efficiency in their homes or businesses.

Urban Gardening Urban gardening is starting to take hold in the Green Impact Zone. While providing much needed fresh vegetables and fruit in this so called "food desert," these gardens put vacant lots to productive use and protect natural resources. Residents can sell their produce and also fight obesity with better diets and more physical activity. A part of the urban gardening effort is the Sowers of Sustainability which offers classes on gardening basics and community organizing. The Sowers of Sustainability have planted demonstration gardens and installed rain gardens that help manage storm runoff as well as beautify the neighborhoods. Public Safety In the promotion of public safety, studies that have been done show a strong connection between high levels of trash and litter and crime level. This connection has been borne out in the Zone’s Mannheim neighborhood where crime has dropped since volunteers cleaned up the area. There are other markers of progress in the Green Impact Zone too numerous to mention; but, there is still much to be done. Every 45 days and once a year, MARC issues a performance report and this report informs an ongoing work plan. The initiative is gaining momentum though. As stated, initial funding originated from public sources. But now private donors are beginning to channel money to the Zone, and area-wide participation is increasing as organizations, agencies and businesses start to follow those who took the first leap and get on board the Zone initiative. Also, even in these early stages, other cities and even other countries (e.g. Japan) are taking notice. St. Louis recently sent a delegation to Kansas City to see if the program could be replicated in their city. Ultimately, though, the residents of the Green Impact Zone are the ones waiting, hoping and trusting that this program will make a lasting difference. As Anita Maltbia, Director of the Zone staff, states in the 2011 Annual Performance Report, “We’re in the business of creating hope. We hope people engage and assume leadership…We need to continue honest discussions at every level…We need to bring about real change and build the capacity that leads to a truly sustainable community.” For more information visit the Green Impact Zone’s website: www.greenimpactzone.org. Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels April 2012 Aries (March 21 – April 19) Happy birthday Aries! This birth year is about balancing action with intuition. Be serious and consistent with your meditation practice. You’ll come to rely on inner guidance and be able to access it quickly. This will greatly help your success in career and relationships. If you have business issues, best to keep things on the back burner, since situations will change a lot and you can make better decisions next month. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Relationships will be improving greatly! If single, you can meet someone new, and if partnered, you’ll be more in sync. This is mostly due to your new skills of speaking up for your needs. People want you to be happy and like to do things for you! And now that you’re not resentful, they’re not reading your mind; you have lots of extra energy to enjoy. You might have challenges in your meditation practice, but stay consistent and you’ll have a breakthrough that will be worth the wait. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Issues of trust are bubbling up so they can be resolved. Situations might look eerily similar to past disasters. But meditate, journal and release negative memories that haunt you. Things will clear out and you’ll see it’s not so bad. In fact, you might have been ready to push away something that’s actually good! Being on the edge of a new phase of growth is always scary, but can rocket you into new confidence and emotional success! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Like your Gemini pals, you’re being tested about trust and intimacy. It will really help if you’re able to meditate with your partner. If not, meditate on your own and see their soul with you. Have a conversation about your fears on this

spiritual plane. What would you say that you feel wouldn’t be heard in “real life”? Listen in your heart for vulnerabilities your partner “shares”. You’ll be surprised how this soul level communication has a positive effect on your relationship. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) This is a time to be gentle with yourself. Stressful thoughts lead to a stressed body. Use your meditation to release negative experiences and to forgive people and situations. Give your body a break by getting a massage, taking naps, eating healthy, practicing deep breathing. It’s also important to let go of control and allow people to help you, at work and at home. If you do these things, you’ll have a great burden off your shoulders. You’ll also have insights about ideas for prosperity and money management. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) This is the time to take action and make brave moves in your world! Meditate and visualize the changes you want and by mid-month, you’ll be able to manifest your goals. You’ve been in an interior phase since late January, which could have been very frustrating or depressing. But let all that go and move forward with the push of energy that’s here for you! Any miscommunication about relationships will also resolve.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) You’ll be able to release fears that have been holding you back for many years! These fears could be about intimacy, success, travel or other forms of selfexpansion. It’s safe to be you in a big way! You could also have answers to weird health issues, like discovering a food allergy. Alternative therapies will provide healing. Just remember no matter what your past held--it doesn’t have to dictate your future! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You could be starting a new relationship that will be able to provide deep bonding and intense intimacy. Even if there was a rocky beginning over the last month, let go of any bumps and see how good it can be. Meditate to release old romantic issues so that your mind will trust the good that you’re encountering. If partnered, you’ll be able to open up to a new level of closeness, so don’t allow the past to haunt you. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) This is a great time to make a job change. You’re feeling confident about your skills and you might be hearing from people who have good offers for you. You could also be starting a new relationship, or having a great time in your current partnership. The only challenge might be in feeling worthy of having financial and emotional abundance. Meditate on increasing your self-worth, so you don’t do subconscious stuff that sabotages things! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) It’s time to take action about selfimprovement, and not to just think or read about changes. Meditate and get peaceful within. Then make a list of priorities. Is health or eating the first step? Or is it healing from past emotional wounds? Could it be working on opening your heart? Or seeking a job that respects you? Be gentle with yourself as you go

about these steps toward progress--but keep taking steps! You’ll be amazed at the amount of growth you can achieve in the next three months! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You are having many breakthroughs about intimacy, sexuality, trust and bonding. Your rigorous inner work is really paying off as you’re able to connect, blend, love and feel loved! Keep working on releasing old fears of rejection and old memories of loss. Not only will you feel lighter emotionally, but you’ll also sleep better (a challenge for many Aquarians). You can also have new avenues of prosperity coming to you. Enjoy your abundance! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You’ll get many insights and specific answers in meditation that will help you with relationships. You’ll get guidance about what is holding you back from finding romantic happiness; or you’ll be able to forgive past hurts; or be able to gain spiritual solutions for your partner’s problems. It’s important to be in the present moment and see how much joy is available for you, if you open up to it. You could also have friends from the past come back into your life.
