Dear Friend, The articles this month focus on healthy sexuality and relationships. It’s such a juicy topic and the articles on libidos, fertility, expressing sexuality, and healthy relationships reflect that. Andi Enns, a public relations pro (www.andienns.com), compiled numerous quotes on healthy sexuality for this issue. Below are a few: “There are only two rules to healthy sexuality: 1. Play nice. 2. Don't damage the equipment.”

INTO YOUR WATERS By Paul Goldman During this morning’s meditation, I was at first surprised, even a bit disturbed when you graced this sacred silence,

I saw you as clear as if you were present here and now-resplendent glory naked on our wedding bed-beneath you, crisp white linen,

your body so still, breasts rising-falling with each inhalation-exhalation, I ritually cleansed your spirit with ancestor’s smudge sage, from your graceful feet

up the length of you past the succulent river where we have swum often like salmon—

Ice Cream without the Cow By Bethany Klug, DO That blast of heat we had in June made me conscious of one food in particular, ice cream! It’s so refreshing on a hot muggy day. It’s been years since I’ve eaten real ice cream made from milk or cream. My bowels just don’t tolerate it. Several years ago, I eliminated milk products entirely. Yup, no milk, no cheese, no yogurt, no cottage cheese, nothing from the udder of a cow, except small amounts of ghee, a type of clarified butter. I was intrigued by the hypothesis that autism may be an autoimmune disease and the observation that many autistic children improved when milk products and glutencontaining grains like wheat were removed from their diet. How did it work? The psoriasis I had been dealing with for 20 years vanished and has not returned. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. I often recommend that patients with inflammatory conditions stop eating milk products with excellent results. Allergies, asthma, arthritis, colic, colitis, constipation, depression, ear infections, esophageal reflux, headaches, IBS, insulin resistance, nasal drainage, obesity, osteoporosis, skin conditions and more have improved. When breastfeeding mothers stop eating dairy, these conditions go away in their infants. Casein, one of the proteins in milk, has been shown to increase immune factors that cause inflammation. Milk contains saturated fat, associated most commonly with coronary artery disease. Milk also contains lactose, a sugar associated with gastric distress, ovarian failure and cancer. All milk, including organic milk, contains hormones, particularly growth factors that may be associated with breast and other cancers. Like all animal foods, milk tips the body’s acidbase balance to the acid side, promoting inflammation, infection and

cancer. Most of all, the body doesn’t like an acid state. It will buffer it, often with calcium salts from the bones. The western diet of meat, milk products and processed food presents a huge acid load to the body. This may be why osteoporosis is so prevalent in the US. You can make dairy-free, ice cream at home with a high-speed blender, such as a Vita-Mix or Blendtec, and an ice cream maker. Get a newer electric ice maker with a freezer disc and your ice cream will be ready to eat in 20 minutes with no mess. Cashews provide the creaminess so you won’t miss the milk. I know someone who uses a similar recipe in a soft serve machine. Divine!

Cashew Vanilla Ice Cream 2 cups water 1 cup cashews ¼ cup agave nectar 2 TBSP vanilla extract A pinch of sea salt Place all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until emulsified. Pour into ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturers directions. The ice cream will be the consistency of soft serve. Place it in the freezer for a harder consistency. Variation: Lemon Ice Cream. Use 1 ½ cups water and ½ cup lemon juice instead of 2 cups of water. Add the peel of one lemon and eliminate the vanilla extract.

Integrating the Elements By Carmelita Davis Beets Do you find yourself running low on energy or fighting fatigue throughout the day, even if you’ve gotten enough sleep the night before? If so, you’re not alone! Feeling sluggish during the day is a common complaint among men and women, young and old. It’s important to find out if there may be a medical reason, such as sleep apnea, that is causing the daytime fatigue. If there’s no obvious explanation, though, it’s quite likely that some simple changes will give you a consistently higher energy level. With that extra energy, you’ll be more productive, more engaged in your work, and, quite likely, much happier, because when you feel drained, it’s hard to feel excited about life! First of all, your day should begin with a healthy breakfast. If instead you’re grabbing a donut and a cup of coffee, you’re setting yourself up for an energy crash. A few hours after that initial caffeine and sugar jolt, you’ll feel like curling up for a nap. The energy burst/energy crash cycle will continue if you depend on sugar and caffeine throughout the day to feel alert. If this sounds familiar, I hope you’ll seriously consider eliminating sugar, caffeine, and junk food in general from your regular diet. If you can slowly ease these unhealthy substances from your diet, you’ll be surprised at how much healthier and

energetic you will feel. You’ll even find that you don’t need caffeine or sugar in the morning to feel wide awake! If you replace coffee or soda with water, you’ll really be doing yourself a great favor. Dehydration can cause fatigue—and caffeinated drinks actually contribute to dehydration. Drink a big glass of water if you’re feeling tired and you may be surprised at how quickly you feel more awake. It’s also good to know that dehydration can cause headaches—so if you’re feeling both tired and headachy, drinking several glasses of water might be the best thing you could do for yourself. Dietary improvements alone can trigger a welcome increase in your get-up-and-go. Here are additional things to think about in your quest to get that terrific ready to take on the world feeling during the day. Think positively. Check your attitude. Negativity is a downer and brings your energy level down as well. Positive self-talk can turn sad, exasperating, or tense situations into opportunities for self-empowerment. When something negative occurs, don’t berate yourself. Instead, remind yourself that you’ve been through difficult times before and have always come through just fine. Focus on the lessons, not the pain, that can be found in difficult situations. You’ll be amazed to find how quickly your energy level will increase when you keep your attitude positive by being a cheerleader for yourself. Remember, too, that laughter is a real energy booster. So if you’re dragging, don’t reach for a cookie—talk with a friend, relative or co-worker with a great sense of humor. Discover

how just five or ten minutes of enjoyable, humorous conversation can lift your spirits and your energy. Get moving. It’s easy to get in a rut and forget that exercise in any form— even walking to the copy machine— increases our energy level. Look for ways to add movement to your day. If you can walk a few miles in the morning or evening—that’s fantastic! But if that seems overwhelming to you, start small and build from there. Take one flight of stairs a day, rather than the elevator. Park your car in the spot furthest from your building. Take a short walk during a break or over your lunch hour. Anything you can do will help…and as you feel more energetic, you’ll naturally want to increase the amount of time you spend moving—I guarantee it! Love yourself. You can’t increase your energy if you don’t love and take good care of yourself, and that

includes doing some basic things. Please make sure to eat a balanced diet, take vitamins, get enough sleep, and get help handling stress that is overwhelming you. Try adding some natural healing methods to your selfcare regimen, such as acupuncture or massage. Have caring people in your life. Seek appropriate medical care when you don’t feel right. Love yourself and give yourself credit for all of the wonderful, positive things you do in life. Don’t dwell on what’s going wrong. Go for the gusto—and see your energy level soar! journey to wholeness

How Do I Love Thee…? By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. How do I love thee, Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight… I love thee to the level of everyday’s Most quiet need, by sun and candle light… ~Elizabeth Barrett Browning The inspiring poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning gives us an ideal to strive for as we grow in our special relationships. It doesn’t, however, give us the course of action that will guide us in this daily task. Dr. John Gottman, one of the most influential authors in relationship counseling, has done extensive research and does give us a working directive. In his book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, Dr. Gottman gives us some wonderful and practical ways to “grow” our relationships healthily. One study he speaks about relates that one of the major causes of marital dissatisfaction and divorce is the birth of the first child. Sixty-seven percent of couples had a large drop in marital satisfaction after becoming parents. Thirty-three percent did not see a change. In fact, over half of these couples reported improvements. The difference between the two groups was what Dr. Gottman calls “love maps”. The couples who didn’t have a drop in marital dissatisfaction were the ones with detailed love maps from the beginning. What is a love map? It is the detailed information that each person stores about the beloved. Intimate familiarity with each other’s history, preferences, fears, passions, dreams and many other aspects of daily life. The full “Love Map” questionnaires are found in his book. Here

are some examples of questions for the couple to answer with a true or false: (The questionnaire lists 20 items.) • I can name my partner’s best friends. • I can tell you some of my partner’s life dreams. • I can tell you the most stressful thing that happened to my partner as a child. • Periodically, I ask my partner about his or her world right now. In another questionnaire he plays “20 questions.” • Name my two closest friends. • Describe in detail what I did today, or yesterday. • What is my favorite flower? • What is one of my greatest fears or disaster scenarios? • What turns me on sexually? • What is my favorite meal? You begin to get the picture of what a love map is. The statements in the first Love Map questionnaire and the 60 questions in the Love Map 20 Questions Game include dreams, hopes, aspirations, fears, joys, memories, relationships, daily likes and dislikes, feelings about oneself and others and many more. It covers the “depth and breadth and height” that Browning describes so beautifully. Gottman gives life to her words by helping us to understand what tools would be helpful in beginning and developing a healthy relationship. I am often surprised by couples who come to counseling after 5, 10, 20 years of a relationship and still do not have a very good idea about who their partner really is. The person who knows what their partner likes to eat, how he/she likes coffee or tea, what TV programs he/she prefers, how he/she feels about his/her job is on the road to draw-

ing a great love map. We chart our love maps with intimate time together and sharing on a regular basis. When I see couples in distress, what I see most often is that they spend little to no time together without children, other people or other activities. The first prescription is to ask them to find a daily time, even if it is five minutes to begin sharing and developing a love map for each other. Hopefully, this can grow over time. Check out Dr. Gottman’s book. Better yet, make up your own statements and questions. Have some fun. Energize your relationship so that you can soar with the poets and recite “How do I love thee” to your special person. Jude LaClaire, Ph.D., LCPC, LCSW is a counselor, educator and author. “Healthy sexuality begins with

a healthy feeling within oneself about the organic functions of the body. Guilt and shame about our bodies and its functions create internal chaos. When one is able to let go of that baggage, they are then able to open themselves to sexuality as a spiritually transcendent experience.” ~Shani Enns, spiritual coach. www.ShaniEnns.com

A Quiet Sole

By Jill Dutton The Reflexology Association of Canada defines reflexology as: “A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears and their referral areas within zone related areas, which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes without the use of tools, crèmes or lotions, the feet being the primary area of application, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.” Perform a search for reflexology in the Kansas City area and just a few names appear. Kristie Martin, owner of A Quiet Sole, is one of them. Although Kansas doesn’t currently have laws governing reflexology, Kristie is certified as well as recently board-certified under the Natural Therapies Certification Board. She opened A Quiet Sole on November 1, 2007.

August 2009 10 Evolving…

Kristie says she sees primarily two types of clients. The first group is generally healthy but seeking reflexology for health maintenance. She says this group utilizes several modalities of healing including eating well, taking vitamins, yoga, massage and homeopathic treatments. Kristie says these clients are, “in the know” about full body, mind, spirit principles. The second group of clients Kristie sees have complex medical histories. She says, “They’ve tried traditional medicine and were either told they don’t know what’s wrong or don’t know how to treat them. So they’re looking for the results they’re not getting from traditional medicine.” Kristie says her main objective is to focus on the client’s core concerns and work from there. Foot Facts: • A 150 pound person walking one mile exerts the equivalent of 63 1/2 tons, 127,000 pounds—on each foot. • Reflexologists believe that the feet mirror the body, with the toes relating to the head, the ball of the foot relating to the chest area, down to the heel which relates to the hip or pelvic region. • Both feet contain 52 bones, a quarter of all bones in the body. Feeling Frisky? Herbs for Fertility “Many common plants can be used to influence fertility, including red clover, partridge berry, liferoot, wild carrot, and wild yam.“ By Susun S. Weed For thousands of years knowledge of the herbs and wild plants that could increase fertility were the secrets of the village wise women. But after the holocaust against European Wise Women (the "burning times") and the virtual extermination of Native American medicine women, this knowledge virtually disappeared. In fact, many people erroneously believe that "primitive people" had no means of controlling the likelihood of pregnancy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many common plants can be used to influence fertility, including red clover, partridge berry, liferoot, wild carrot, and wild yam. Some of these grow wild, others are easy to cultivate, and, with the exception of wild carrot, all are also readily available at health food stores. One of the most cherished of the fertilityincreasing plants is red clover (Trifolium pratense). Common in fields and along roadsides, it has bright pink (not really red) blossoms from mid-summer into the chilly days of fall. A favorite flower of the honeybees, the tops (blossoms and appending leaves) are harvested on bright sunny days and eaten as is, or dried for medicinal use. The raw blossoms are delicious in salads and nutritious when cooked with grains such as rice or millet. To make a fertility-enhancing infusion, I take one ounce by weight of the dried blossoms (fresh won't work for this application) and put them in a quart size canning jar. I fill the jar with boiling water, screw on a tight lid, and let it steep at room temperature overnight (or for at least four hours). Dozens of women have told me that they had successful pregnancies after drinking a cup or more (up to four cups) a day of red clover infusion. It is especially helpful if there is scarring of the fallopian tubes, irregular menses, abnormal cells in the reproductive tract, or "unexplained" infertility. It may take several months for the full effect of this herb to come on and pregnancy may not occur until you have used it for a year or two. You can improve the taste by including some dried peppermint (a spoonful or two) along with the dried clover blossoms when making your infusion. Treat the father of the child-to -be to some red clover infusion too! That little evergreen creeper that carpets some parts of the woods around your house is par-

tridge berry (Mitchella repens), also known as squaw weed, supposedly because of its ability to enhance fertility. (My teacher Twylah Nitsch, grandmother of the Seneca Wolf clan, says that "squaw" is a slang term meaning "schmuck" or, in the proper term, "penis," and therefore should not be used in denoting a plant meant to be used by women.) Keep an eye out this spring and see if you can catch Mitchella blooming. Then you'll see why she's sometimes called "twin flower." Interestingly, when the paired flowers fall off, they leave behind but one berry to ripen. (The shiny red berries you've noticed in the forest winter or spring. Yes, they are safe to eat, but leave some for the partridges.) The symbolism of two flowers forming one berry is certainly a suitable icon for fertility. I make a medicinal vinegar by filling a small jar with the fresh leaves, adding apple cider vinegar until the jar is full again. A piece of waxed paper held in place with a rubber band and a label (including date) completes the preparation, which must sit at room temperature for six weeks before use. I enjoy up to a tablespoonful of the vinegar on my salads or in my beans. By mid-to-late May, the yellow blossoms of liferoot (Senecio aureus) enliven my swamp (in upstate New York) and the neighboring roads where there is adequate water and rich soil. A powerful medicine resides in all parts of this lovely wildflower. As the root has a dangerous reputation, I restrict myself to using only the flowers and leaves, which I harvest in bloom and quickly tincture. Small doses of this tincture (3-8 drops a day), taken at least 14 days out of the month, will regulate hormone production, increase libido, normalize the menses, relieve menstrual pain and improve fertility. The closely related Senecia jacobea and Senecio vulgaris can also be used. Wild carrot (Daucus carota), better known as Queen Anne's lace, is such a common roadside plant that most people are amazed to learn that it is a proven anti-fertility herb. In addition to being the wild cousin of carrot, it is related to parsley, dill, caraway, anise, celery, cumin, and a (now extinct) plant whose seeds were the birthcontrol of choice for many a classical Greek or Roman woman. The aromatic seeds of wild carrot are collected in the fall and eaten (a heaping teaspoonful a day) to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. In one small study the effectiveness

rate after thirteen months of use was 99 percent. As modern scientific medicine reports that onethird of all fertilized eggs are passed out of the body without implanting in the uterus, this method of birth control seems in complete agreement with nature. Of the hundreds of women currently using this anti-fertility agent, I have heard virtually no reports of any side-effects. Note that many books caution you to beware the danger of confusing poison hemlock and wild carrot. Poison hemlock is rather scarce in our area, and, at any rate, does not smell or taste of carrot (as does Queen Anne's lace), so I believe this warning to be a red herring. In addition, wild carrot leaves have small hairs on them, while the leaves of poison hemlock are smooth. Another anti-fertility herb that has been tested by small groups of modern women is wild yam (Dioscorea villosa). Since birth-control pills were originally made from this plant, it is not at all surprising that it has the effect of blocking conception when taken daily in rather large doses: either a cup of tea or two capsules taken three times a day. Does it have detrimental effects? Current studies are too small to show any, but there is a possibility that there could be. Interestingly enough, if wild yam is taken in small doses (a cup of tea or 10-20 drops of the tincture daily from onset of menses until mid-period) it increases fertility! Healthy Ingredients for Expressing Your Sexuality

By Kelly Murphy Sexuality is very important and is a direct reflection of how we feel about ourselves and our bodies. Expressing our sexuality comes in many forms; from how we dress to how we interact with others to the way we express ourselves through sex. Healthy sexuality is a result of a healthy self-esteem, healthy interactions with people, a healthy sexual relationship and being comfortable with our body. A healthy sexual attitude allows us to feel comfortable with educating our children about sex and how to be comfortable with their own sexuality. Sexuality and our expression of it in daily life is an aspect that, in the past, often was overlooked or suppressed due to society’s action of not fully embracing it as a natural and healthy aspect of who we are. Depression, anxiety and disease are on the rise and have forced us to look at this aspect of who we are due to the impact that these implications have on our sexuality. Sexuality is a very common aspect of oneself that is addressed in my personal practice as a hypnotherapist. I work with people on many issues such as self-esteem, confidence, anxiety, stress, fears, body image, weight loss, quitting smoking, resolving grief, healing from abuse and so much more. As my clients get better, they notice a new awareness of becoming more comfortable with their sexuality and the expression of it. Clients tend to report improvements in sex drive, improved body image, a new desire to take better care of themselves and their bodies, heightened desire to dress in a way that makes them feel good about themselves and an overall healthier attitude toward themselves and sex. There are a variety of factors that play an important role in the development of and the healthy maintenance of an individual’s sexuality:

Healthy Self-Esteem How we feel about ourselves, in general, plays an important role in our sexuality. Good self esteem is acknowledging that you are an important person and deserving of the good things in life. Good self-esteem is a direct reflection of a good relationship that you have with yourself. It is about treating yourself each day August 2009 12

positive people with which to surround themselves. When they do this, the progress they make is very pronounced. Self-talk plays a huge role in how we feel about ourselves and our bodies and the people we surround ourselves with can enhance this self-talk or can shatter it. Being around people who energize us can help us to ignite our own energy. There is a lot of truth in the statement, “who you spend time with is what you become,” so choose those people wisely. Take a look at the people you know that tend to lift you up each time you speak to them. It might be that you literally feel “lighter” in their presence. Make note of the people who make you laugh and naturally seem to bring out the best in you. Choose to spend more time with those people. Also make note of anyone who seems to drain your energy. It might be that you find yourself more critical of yourself and others in their presence or just after a conversation with this person. Choose to spend less time in their company or set healthy boundaries when you are around them so they don’t affect your energy. with love and respect. It is enjoying the friendships and other relationships in your life. People who tend to have good self-esteem in general tend to view their sexuality as an important part of who they are and enjoy healthy ways of expressing this aspect of who they are. If selfesteem is an aspect that needs some nurturing, you can seek counseling, hypnotherapy, aid from a holistic practitioner, make time for regular weekly meetings with positive people in your life, journal and write your feelings out and find a hobby to do regularly that makes you feel good about yourself and helps build your confidence.

Healthy Relationships Relationships we have with others are key components to how we feel about ourselves. Positive and healthy relationships with people who are supportive and encouraging have a huge impact on the relationship you have with yourself. Good people make you feel good about yourself and negative or toxic people have the opposite effect. In my practice, this is an aspect of my client’s life that literally can determine the amount of therapy that he/she may need. I educate my clients on the importance of seeking out

Letting Go of Unresolved Grief and Unhealthy Perceptions of Yourself Along the journey of life, many of us have been impacted by unpleasant experiences, traumatic experiences and/or have carried around beliefs that were imposed upon us by others de-

on healthy sexuality...

"Good sex is letting go of the mind and getting into, really into, the sensations/ pleasures/feeling of the experience. People are born with an innate awareness of these senses – but as we get older, we lose that primitive, wonderful sense of our internal self. And so basically, for the sexual experience to be a high, we need to forgo all thought and get into the energy of the experience, feel it in all of you." ~ Suzanne Andrews, host of Functional Fitness on PBS Television.

spite not being true. If these issues are not dealt with and resolved they may get stored away deeper in the mind and body. An unresolved issue stored in the mind can sound like this: “I’m not good enough,” “I’m not slender enough” or “I don’t deserve him.” An unresolved issue in the body can become disease, chronic disorders, pain, etc. These unresolved issues will have a direct impact on a person’s sexuality. Many clients who come to see me for unresolved issues may also experience: shame of their bodies, low sex drive or sexual dysfunction; they may not experience a fulfilling sexual relationship due to physical and/or emotional issues. Resolving these issues has a very dramatic affect on sexuality. Some of the initial changes my clients report after this kind of healing and resolution takes place are: reawakened interest in grooming and appearance, renewed interest in relationships and intimacy, increase in sex drive and more energy overall. These factors play a big part in sexuality and how you feel about yourself and others. If you are experiencing sadness, depression, physical ailments, or other ailments that may be caused by unresolved grief or old beliefs, you may contact a holistic or health practitioner who specializes in this area. You could also keep a journal and write about this aspect of your life to purge anything that you no longer need to carry around.

Practice expressing yourself and your feelings to the people in your life each day.

Good nutrition gets the leading role when it comes to good health. A diet high in fruits and vegetables is optimum for a healthy life and sexuality.

express their sexuality. Practice expressing yourself and your feelings to the people in your life each day. If you are angry, hurt, upset or afraid, take some time to think about what you would like to say and express that to the person(s) or write it out and you can decide later if it is something you would like to send or throw away. Just get it out of you so you are not suppressing what is on your mind. Suppressed emotions will usually distort how you express yourself and sexuality is no exception.

Assertiveness

Good Nutrition and Exercise

How we assert ourselves daily is a direct reflection of our self-esteem. Sexuality is not only an attitude and an overall feeling you have about yourself but it is also an expression. Healthy communication is a big part of my work as a hypnotherapist and coach. I coach and give hypnotherapy for people to help them overcome fears related to how they express themselves. I find that people who tend to have challenges in the area of communication are either too passive or too aggressive. As they learn to communicate more openly and consistently on a daily basis they become healthier with their own expression of sexuality. People who are assertive on a daily basis are generally more confident and self assured due to the fact that they are comfortable with asking for what they want and setting healthy boundaries in their life and in relationships. This, in turn, allows them to feel more relaxed and less quick to anger or being resentful because of pent up and suppressed emotions. A more confident and self-assured person is more likely to feel more comfortable with how they

Nutrition and exercise are key when it comes to how you feel emotionally, mentally and physically. It has been proven repeatedly that exercise not only helps keep us in shape and wards off disease in the body, but also releases endorphins in the body that are the “feel-good chemicals” that contribute to reduction of stress. This, in turn, prevents all kinds of sickness including depression and anxiety. As I stated earlier, physical ailments, depression and anxiety disrupt how we feel about ourselves, our bodies and our ability to enjoy a fulfilling sex life. Exercise is a great way to prevent disease and maintain a healthy body weight and a healthy body image. Good nutrition gets the leading role when it comes to good health. A diet high in fruits and vegetables is optimum for a healthy life and sexuality. Too much meat, sugar and dairy can play havoc in the body and lead to more serious illness overtime. I work with clients as a holistic nutrition consultant and as they cut back on meat, sugar and dairy and increase green leafy

vegetables, fruits and whole grains such as brown rice, they begin to thrive emotionally, physically and mentally. People report feelings of experiencing more energy, feeling more alive and have a heightened awareness of themselves in relation to their sexuality and how they feel about their bodies. Eating more green vegetables, fruits and whole grains such as brown rice, is a great way to begin. I also highly recommend liquid chlorophyll. This is great for circulation and tends to improve sex drive and sexual performance. If you do drink alcohol, it is wise to drink in moderation. Hypnotherapy and holistic nutrition are also very helpful tools for developing good habits that keep us healthy. Following some of the guidelines listed above can help improve the way you feel about yourself as a sexual being. A good self esteem, positive relationships, letting go of unresolved issues and old beliefs that no longer serve you, assertiveness, good nutrition and exercise are the foundation for a healthy attitude on sexuality and a fulfilling sex life.

What happened to my libido? By Karen Harrison, Ed.S.

“The woman has decided that she is not interested in having sex if she doesn’t feel safe, loved, and supported in the relationship.” “What happened to my libido?” is one of the most common questions I get as a sex therapist. Both men and women ask the question but primarily more women. People call concerned for their marriage or relationship as one partner is interested in sex and the other either has a different desire level or feels no desire. Women are concerned that if they don’t have sex, their husbands will turn to porn or an affair. Men are worried their wives will see them as less than a man for not having desire. Both men and women worry about whether their partner will stay with them if they don’t have sex more often. My job as a sex therapist is to help them to find out why they have a low desire and help them resolve the issue. Women’s sexuality is generally more complicated than men’s sexuon healthy sexuality...

"The way we perceive ourselves and our bodies is the most important factor in fostering a healthy sense of sexuality. ality. One of my clients described it as though the moon and stars have to line up in order for her to feel desire. Many factors impact women. Men’s sexuality can be complicated too, but more often, men are driven by hormones and less by mental and emotional factors. I commonly start with a sex history for both men and women. What was she told about sexuality as a child? Generally girls get messages of good girls don’t have sex, wait until marriage, don’t get pregnant, you will be disgraced if you get pregnant and all men want is sex. Men are told not to get a girl pregnant but considered a “stud” for having sex. Neither boys nor girls are given much information about sex, birth control, or loving sexual relationships. Teens often get their information about sex from friends who don’t know much, from television and movies, or from watching porn. Parents are generally uncomfortable discussing sexuality with their children. And parents often don’t share much affection with each other in front of the children. If they don’t display hugs, kisses and holding hands, their kids won’t know what healthy touch is for their own relationships. Healthy touch forms the basis for healthy sexuality. If our kids don’t see us enjoying our partner affectionately, they will get the idea that we have a sexless marriage. Why should they wait for sex until marriage when we display a sexless marriage? Additionally, religion can have a negative

impact on sexuality. When brought up with shame and guilt messages about sex, it is hard to turn them off once married, especially for women. Was the person sexually abused as a child or teen? Many times the abusers are Mother’s boyfriend, an uncle, a grandfather, a neighbor, or someone the child knows and trusts. Being sexually abused for men or women has a lasting impact that can flood the abused with shame and

on regular dates? If they are not having fun as romantic partners, it is hard to have a quality sexual relationship. How is communication and conflict resolution going? Are the chores handled fairly? guilt and kill sexual desire for the rest of their life unless it is worked through—most commonly in counseling. Next we check out dating relationships up to and including the current relationship and look for any problem issues such as date rape, having sex before feeling ready, pain issues, erection problems, sexually transmitted diseases and affairs. In the current relationship, we check out the relationship satisfaction overall. Is the couple going out

ents? Have there been any affairs that have eroded trust and love? Do the couple talk openly about their sexual relationship sharing what they like and dislike in a loving way? What kind of a desire discrepancy is there? A few couples that have come to me for help with their couple sexuality don’t seem to like or respect each other. The man thinks that if they just had sex more often, everything would be fine. The woman has decided that

she is not interested in having sex if she doesn’t feel safe, loved and supported in the relationship. Health issues have an impact on sexuality. Are there pain issues such as back pain, sciatica pain, bladder issues, or genital pain during intercourse? How much liquor is the man drinking prior to sex? Even a couple of beers can impact erections. For men and women, hormone levels have an impact on sexuality. This can be checked out at your doctor through blood or saliva tests. Women can look at the website www.womeninbalance.org for more information about hormones. Women who have had a hysterectomy can lose desire as well as have problems with their genitals. Using bioidentical hormones may rectify the problem. Stress has a huge impact on sexuality. When a person is stressed, he or she is in the head and not in the body where pleasure can be experienced most easily. Depression causes a person to lose interest in life as well as sex. Many antidepressants cause a decrease in libido; however, depression does too. Caffeine use can impact sexuality by making a person jittery and anxious. Sleep has a large impact on sexuality as well. When a person doesn’t have enough sleep, he or she often isn’t in the mood for sex. Sleep is impacted by hormones, pets and kids in the bed, snoring, pain, alcohol, depression, anxiety, shift work, relationship problems and more. Young parents often are wakened by their infants and toddlers. Parents of teens may stay up waiting for their kids to get home. Issues such as performance anxi-

ety, body image, power struggles over sex, and conflict over pornography have an impact. Men most commonly worry about their performance, which kills sexual desire and makes some men avoid sex. Women worry most about body image and think that if they feel unattractive, their partner will find them unattractive too and not be interested in sex. Conflict over pornography is common for couples today and the couple has to come to some agreement whether they agree on no porn or some porn and how often and what type. Now that I have mentioned the most common factors that impact sexuality, you may wonder if it is possible to have healthy, happy sexual relationships. The answer is yes! With the knowledge of all the things I have mentioned, you may be able to address some or all of the issues on your own or with the help of your doctor. If you would like help addressing libido issues in your relationship, check out www.aasect.org for a certified sex therapist or write or call me for an appointment. I love helping couples develop healthy, loving and satisfying sexual relationships.

The Relevance of Shamanism in Today’s World

By Daniel Baxley

Today we are beginning to understand that we can no longer go on living the way that we have been in the modern age. We are exhausting our natural resources and our beautiful blue earth is struggling to survive. Mankind is rethinking how we walk on our precious Mother from the way we have lived in the past. The new technologies of solar power, wind power, and waterpower allow us to harness the energies of our planet in a healthy and sustainable manner. Growing our own food, composting our waste materials, recycling, reusing and reducing what we consume provides a vehicle to reduce our carbon footprint. The way we construct our homes and buildings, the cars we drive and all of our technology is being re-evaluated with an eye on the past and how our ancestors lived. This same shift in consciousness that is occurring in society on how we have used our natural resources is also occurring in the way we approach our health, our daily living, and our spiritual life. Many have become disillusioned with our health care system and its inability to treat the whole individual, rather than just disease and symptoms. As human beings we desire to be engaged in our healing and to be treated as persons instead of cases. For this reason many individuals around the planet are returning to the old ways of healing such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, energetic medicine and many other healing modalities. The oldest form of healing on the planet is Shamanism. Shamanism is a deeply rooted traditional system for healing and solving personal and community problems in which a healing practitioner called a shaman contacts spirits for wisdom and advice—usually by going into an altered state of consciousness. In this altered state, the shaman can see deeper truths for understanding and healing. Shamanic practices have existed in all cultures around the world for thousands of years and although they differ somewhat in technique and ceremony they all share a common thread. All Shamans are deeply in touch with the spirit world and access this August 2009

information in various ways; the core of which is attaining an altered state of consciousness. This is oftentimes accomplished by the use of drumming, rattling, or dance to allow the Shaman to enter into a trance state. Sometimes the Shaman may use a visionary medicine to cross over into this alternate reality. Once in this reality the Shaman connects with the spirit world to gain insight on how best to treat the client. The Shaman may also use herbs, smoke, scented waters, oils and various power objects in working with the client. Some of the objects may include such things are stones, crystals, amulets

and various other tools that may be on their personal altar. Oftentimes the Shaman may be drawn to work with a client at a sacred site, or a special place on their land where the energies of the earth are of a higher vibration, which gives a special support to the client and the Shaman. The underlying belief in Shamanic practices is that all conditions that are in a state of imbalance is due to a disconnect in the individual’s spiritual wellbeing. This imbalance may manifest physically through disease, mentally through depression or other psychological conditions, and emotionally. A few of the underlying causes for these conditions can include Soul Loss, Power Loss, and Dense Energies in the Body. Soul Loss is when the individual has lost part of their self, or soul. The self is fragmented and

the person does not feel as though they are part of life. This is many times caused by emotional or psychical trauma. Power Loss can cause physical illness or a state of confusion. Dense energy can be stuck in the body and require energetic extraction, or spiritual removal by the Shaman. Many other conditions may also be present for the Shaman. There may be times when the Shamans vista or vision sees things about the client that they are unaware of or has been suppressed for many years. Whatever the condition a sense of trust and sharing is established and the Shaman creates a co –creative process for the persons re entry into wholeness. I personally have seen the value of this work with gifted Shamans around the world. I have seen conditions that were unresponsive to Western Medicine completely cured in a very short time with this powerful spiritual practice. My work specifically is focused on Native American and Peruvian Shamanistic Healing. They both share the use of an altar, various power objects, the singing of medicine songs, herbal medicines, sweat lodges and ceremony. These ancient practices are once again coming to the attention of the world. People of heart and soul are listening to a different call as we are once again beginning to reconnect with the rhythms and cycles of the natural world. The healing ways of the past are especially relevant today as they provide a deeply rooted earthhonoring approach to our own personal healing. By healing ourselves in such a way we can transform ourselves, our culture and nature. Shamanism is an old practice that is being reborn to serve us today in new and exciting ways. We are the ones we have been waiting for!

Spiritual Horoscope for August

horoscopes

by Aluna Michaels, M.A.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUG. 22) Happy birthday Leo! Cultivate gratitude for the wonderful people and circumstances in your life. Next, meditate on any difficult situations, especially regarding finances and issues of trust in relationships. Ask your soul what steps to take to solve these problems. If you follow through diligently, your world will greatly improve in those “stuck” areas. Let the joy you already have be your guiding force! VIRGO (AUG. 23 – SEPT. 22) You must make a promise not to be so hard on yourself! Once and for all, commit to be positive about your choices, appearance and circumstances. Instead of picking on bad stuff, zero in on the amazingly great details of your life. (That’s using your Virgo critiquing skills in a good way!) You have the chance to make this a habit. This is a deep spiritual healing that will quickly improve relationship and career opportunities. LIBRA (SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22) Meditate on the strength of the Universe. The power of Love can heal ANYTHING in your life! Whether you think it’s bad karma, trauma from the past, habits that you can’t seem to break, there IS a solution. Imagine love as white or pink light, filling you. See it dissolving any stuck energy in your mind, body or soul. Use affirmations to feel worthy of receiving this healing love. It can also help to study about warrior gods or goddesses from other cultures. Visualize them protecting and empowering you! SCORPIO (OCT. 23 – NOV. 21) You believe in spiritual principles, but what are you doing to walk your talk? Dedicate your soul to something that you truly love doing. or yoga. Perhaps you’d like to devote one day a month to a charity. It could even be something as small as being kind to someone whom you feel extremely judgmental towards. As you take these actions, energy will open to create new plans that make you feel confident and centered. Whatever area of life you need to improve, you’ll have the inner and outer resources to do it! SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 – DEC. 21) If you’re having communication issues in your relationship, think and meditate before you speak! Old memories are coming to the surface which have to do with childhood situations and previous partnerships. It’s going to take humility to look at your patterns of relating that re-create unhappy results. Work relationships are also affected, so identifying and healing your triggers helps you get ahead in career as well as with loved ones. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 – JAN. 19) Stop being so mean to yourself! You hold yourself to impossible standards and are constantly disappointed with life. Have your spouse or a beloved friend write affirmations for you. They clearly see what you overlook about yourself! Don’t argue with these statements; just repeat them in your mind with conviction. You’ll start accomplishing more with less stress. You’ll feel like an angel is on your shoulder rather than a critical parent! AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 – FEB. 18) Finances increase as you think more positive about money. Picture yourself as a good steward of the resources the Universe brings you. Also, try to heal ideas of being a loner, or of being the odd one out. When you dwell on how misunderstood you are, and how oth-

ers don’t “get” you, you cut yourself off from the divine flow of love and prosperity. You’ll always be unique, but you don’t have to be the outsider. Your special soul qualities enhance and invigorate everyone around you!

Becoming happier is a change. Meditate to stay open to this good sort of change. It will also be helpful to be around pets or animals, since they’ll soothe your spirit. Readjusting your mindset is hard work, but you can do it!

PISCES (FEB. 19 – MARCH 20) Like your Capricorn friends, you’re very self-critical and even outright cruel to yourself! Can you imagine hearing someone talk about another person the way you think about yourself? Become the warrior you would be to protect an innocent person, but use it to protect yourself from your negativity! Each day do something nice for yourself. A special meal, a warm bath, a walk in nature. Smile at yourself in the mirror. Relationships will flourish because you’ll believe you’re lovable. Let your spouse or partner know what you’re working on, so they can remind you of your spiritual self.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20) Don’t make any snap decisions this month, especially where work is concerned! You’re irritable and you’d love to tell supervisors your feelings in no uncertain terms. Channel your mental angst into vigorous physical activity. Many things are changing behind the scenes at work. Let them fall apart naturally, without stirring the pot. And that means no gossip or snarky jokes, Gemini—you don’t want it coming back to bite you! Stay poised and enjoy the shifts as they happen.

ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19) All sorts of frustrations are building up in your life. It’s a challenge not to blow up at people, since nothing seems to be easy now. It’s the last thing you want to do, but please meditate to quiet your mind. Your soul has solutions for you, and you need to slow down and listen. Barreling forward will worsen circumstances. If you absolutely dread sitting meditations, try walking slowly while being aware of your breath. Things will break open by month’s end if you’re dedicated to your quiet time. TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Your self worth isn’t at a high point, so you’ll need to rely on trusted friends to break you out of your negative mental rut. You might also read passages from books by uplifting authors. Be aware how much you hate change.

CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22) This is a time of renewal in the area of romantic relationships and self love. Meditate to release old heartbreaks and disappointments (both with yourself and others). Focus on how much you’ve learned about people and yourself. Your personal history is a stepping stone for future joy. Shift your mindset away from failure and become aware of your progress. Even if you have a great marriage or partnership, you’ll need to work on appreciating yourself. Ask your mate for support.
