This Bike MS recommended ride event begins at 8:00 A.M. with registration at 7:00 A.M. and ends at 12:00 P.M. on Labor Day, Monday, September 6. B4B began in 2006 as a communityoriented event to raise awareness about illnesses which affect the brain causing emotional and behavioral symptoms. The event supports community organizations providing services to those with mental illness. With nearly 350 registered participants in 2009, B4B continues to grow, attracting increased participation, partnerships, and volunteer involvement. B4B is proud to announce the selection of four organizations to receive the first-ever grants in the amount of $2500 each from proceeds raised over the last few years. Those organizations are Pathway to Hope, S.I.D.E, Inc. (Consumerrun organization), Suicide Awareness Survivor Support (SASS-MO-KAN), and Wyandot Center for Community Behavioral Healthcare. Sponsors of B4B so far include: Kansas City Psychiatric Group, Responsive Centers, the Lilac Center, HCA Midwest Research Psychiatric Center, Crittenton Children’s Center, Inergy Services, Anderson Metals Corporation, and Waddell and Reed. In July, Brookside Barkery & Bath celebrated their seventh anniversary in the quaint neighborhood of Brookside. The entrepreneurial adventure was inspired by co-owner Delena Stout’s own St. Bernard, Aspen, who was ill and traditional medicine was not working. Thus became the Brookside Barkery & Bath’s guiding philosophy—better health through better nutrition. Brookside Barkery & Bath is an allnatural pet food store focused on dogs and cats, and offers all-natural grooming and self-serve pet washes with no chemicals. After hard work and perseverance, it became evident the concept was filling a missing niche in the Kansas City area. In 2005 the second location opened in Independence, and in 2007 the third location in Olathe. Also in 2007, the Independence store relocated to the current Lee’s Summit location. “Our proudest accomplishment over the past seven years has been the ability to educate so many pet owners about healthy alternatives for their beloved pets,” said Stout. “Our customers have truly embraced us, and come back to thank us for what we have done for them and their pets.” What better way to celebrate success, than by expanding the original Brookside location. Construction is underway to expand the store from 1200 square feet to 2700 square feet into the adjacent retail space. The expansion will be complete in late September, 2010. Customers can look forward to more room for additional products, for pets and their owners to roam the store comfortably, as well as a larger grooming and self-bathing area. “Our customers love the Brookside store, but during busy times it gets a bit crowded with people, their pets and a web of leashes,” said co-owner Debra Manfield. “We are looking forward to more space to leisurely browse, a wider selection and better display of products, as well as expanded services.” Future plans include possible expansion in Olathe, and possible franchise expansion. About Brookside Barkery & Bath: Brookside Barkery & Bath is a comprehensive source for all-natural and raw pet foods, supplements, treats and accessories, with a variety of brands and formulations to meet its customers’ unique dietary requirements. No pet food sold at the Brookside Barkery contains corn, soy or wheat, animal by-products or chemical preservatives. Free nutritional consults are offered to all our customers. All locations offer walk-in, self service dog bathing, as well as professional grooming by appointment. There are three convenient Kansas City metro locations in Brookside, Olathe and Lee’s Summit. The Power of Connection™ ...Panache Desai By Connie “Crash” Humiston Just one February session with Panache Desai brought about an awakening for many of us Kansas Citians, and he’s returning to Kansas City in September. Evolving: Panache, you opened a portal for me in February—not much bothers me, as I’m the Observer. When I listen to your "Awakening" , Meditation CDI feel loving currents throughout my body. How does this happen? Panache: My role is to create a pathway to empower you to become a vehicle of the awakening of consciousness through the transmission of an energetic gift of Grace that comes through me directly from the Divine. It’s not a technique or modality. This gift is an amazing catalyst for human evolution and ascension. Evolving: What “qualifies” you to do this? Panache: My mother went to an ashram in India where I was blessed in the womb, and she was told very clearly that my purpose for reincarnating was to free humanity of its pain and suffering. Visiting monks recognized it and said, “We’ve been waiting for you. You’re here to transform the planet.” They recog-

nized something profound in me that I wasn’t ready to acknowledge until I was 24. Evolving: People fall down with a glance or touch. It looks hokey on a Web site or TV, but I’ve experienced it. How is this possible? Panache: It’s a tangible, physical, energetic, life-altering experience that is the Source in its purest form, so people are overwhelmed. I can look at you and you get it; I can not look at you and you get it—because you’re being bathed in wave after wave of Divine presence the minute you enter the room. It’s not me that’s doing this. I am a vehicle to empower you—it’s happening through me to remind masters and teachers of their mastery. Everything I’m doing is to set humanity free. September 9, 7-9 p.m.: “An Evening with Panache” at Aquarius Books, 3939 Broadway, KCMO (free). September 10, 7-9 p.m. and September 11, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.: “THE POWER OF CONNECTION™” at the Hampton on the Plaza, 4600 Summit. Pre-registration is suggested at www.panachedesai.com or (239) 6497373. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Yoga Month is a national awareness campaign to educate the nation about the health benefits of yoga and to inspire both youths and adults to take responsibility for their wellbeing by focusing on prevention and healthy lifestyle choices. In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services designated September as National Yoga Month, one of a select number of national health observances. Nationally, an estimated 15+ million will hear about Yoga Month and millions of new students will attend free yoga classes at 2,000+ yoga studios, parks and homes. The Kansas City Yoga Month campaign will provide free classes across the metro area at 11 participating yoga studios and public spaces. The activities are open to all ages and fitness levels. People interested in attending can download free class passes for the events at www.kansas-city-yoga.com. “My vision as the local coordinator for Yoga Month in Kansas City is to show everyone the variety of yoga that Kansas City has to offer. From meditative to gentle to therapeutic, there is a type of yoga for everyone. You have to find what works for you,” local coordinator, Darryl Olive, says. The theme for the third annual Yoga Month campaign is centered around the question

“What is yoga?” “We are using this theme to address common misconceptions and objections to yoga such as yoga is a religion, yoga requires pretzel flexibility and yoga is for women,” Darryl Olive says. Businesses can also request free yoga classes or lunch and learns about the benefits of yoga and physical activity during the month. Amidst rising healthcare costs, obesity rates, unemployment and levels of stress, Yoga Month activities will educate and motivate people by giving them the tools to live healthier lifestyles.

The activities will include: Free Yoga Classes–sampling different yoga styles (a full week of free classes September 13-19, 2010) Free Yoga Workshops–lectures and movies with local yoga experts Free Open House–food, prizes and more Free Corporate Wellness–free onsite yoga classes and lunch and learns By-donation yoga teacher training–comprehensive and nationally recognized The month’s events will also serve as a fundraiser for several local and national non-profits. Revelations from a Fast By Bethany Klug In the April issue of Evolving I shared the book, Juice Fasting and Detoxification by Steve Meyerowitz. It’s the most thorough guide to fasting I’ve seen yet. The book interested my husband David in the benefits of fasting and he asked to join me on my springtime fast. I must say that I never go on a true fast. Fasting by definition means taking only water—no food or other drink. We people of the industrial age carry too many toxins to water-fast without medical supervision. Thankfully, we can still benefit by practicing a mono-diet. This means taking only one kind of food, usually fresh juice. We began our fast Sunday evening at the Jamba Juice at Chicago O’Hare airport on our way to a weekend in Puerto Rico. A juice fast can be done while working, according to Meyerowitz. However, I like to fast on vacation. I like the freedom to slow down, rest and take care of myself without the demands of work. We embarked together with a double wheat grass shot and a carrot-orange juice. We awoke hungry with that low blood sugar feeling. A glass of orange juice perked me right up, but left David with a sugar buzz. A glass of vegetable juice bailed him out. We drank mostly fresh vegetable juices from then on to keep his blood sugar even. We also enjoyed some strained vegetable broth and herb tea to keep us warm when the midMay weather turned cold and rainy. We were hungry for the first two days, or as David said, “I was thinking about food the way a sixteen year-old boy thinks about girls!” I kept reassuring David that if he could get into the third day, the hunger would pass and he would start to feel good. On Tuesday evening, after our yoga class, he turned to me and asked, “Are you hungry?” I wasn’t and neither was he. What happened next was astounding. Perhaps it was because we were fasting together and could share with each other. We clearly began to see our mind states around food. It’s Miller Time! This was our vacation after all! Didn’t we deserve to have a nice dinner out to reward ourselves, to kick back and relax? David was clamoring to see a movie. Perhaps we could reward ourselves that way, but there weren’t any shows I wanted in my consciousness. So we meditated instead. There’s nothing to do. We are foodies. We spend a the bulk of our time outside of work shopping, gardening, foraging, preparing and eating food. We had all this time on our hands. Again, David wanted to see a movie. We meditated instead. I’m Bored! Eating just juice and broth gets boring after awhile. Food is a creative outlet for me. I de-stress by cooking food. I love creating a total sensory experience on a plate. We both enjoy eating skillfully prepared nourishing food. We plan our vacations around restaurants like others might around museums or hikes. Juice and broth wasn’t doing it for us. We meditated instead. Bliss! As we slowed down our eating, our minds slowed down as well. Physically and mentally we felt clear as a bell. Time moved in peacefully aware, slow motion. Meditation was easeful, as if floating on a cloud. It usually

takes me several minutes to settle down before a half smile is born upon my lips. We were moving through our day with Buddha smiles. The tension and forward momentum of our daily lives left us completely. Awareness. We spent five days without chewing, drinking only fresh and filtered vegetable juice. We broke our fast Friday morning with a bowl of fresh watermelon. I heard a message of inner knowing, from my stomach perhaps, “Chew thoroughly! You haven’t seen solid food in a week!” And so I did, until liquid. I savored the flavor, texture and juiciness, gratitude rising up with every chew. Who Changed? We timed our fast to resume our normal diet by Tuesday evening so we could eat at our favorite restaurant, Blue Nile Ethiopian Cafe before leaving town on business. David especially looked forward to dinner with anticipation. I’m sure upon awakening he asked me, “Do you know what day this is?” “Tuesday,” I’m sure I replied. “No, Ethiopian day!” he said. The food came out, looking and smelling fresh and appetizing. But it tasted dead. “Bleah!”, we both said. We went back again just to be sure. Still “bleah!” Did the food change or did we change? Since starting this adventure ten days ago at Jamba Juice, we’d eaten only extremely fresh organic mostly-raw fruit, sprouts, salad greens, nuts and a bit of olive oil. I noticed how I felt as I added other foods back to my diet. Oatmeal, a breakfast staple, made me feel tired and heavy. I’ve been eating vegetable soup for breakfast ever since. The thought of an egg makes me feel like a beached whale. Now I’m eating mostly salads topped with nuts, sprouts and avocados, fresh juices, smoothies, fresh fruit and a small amount of beans. I’m making salad dressings from raw nut butter, as that much oil didn’t sit well with me. Enough Already! I also noticed how much I overeat. I caught myself eating past the point of fullness just because the food was on my plate. I felt physically and mentally sluggish as a result. Now I’m working on taking less food and giving myself permission to leave food behind. True Hunger. David learned nothing terrible would happen if he let himself get hungry. David has had a long-time habit of eating before he got hungry from his days of not eating so well. To wait meant he would get cranky and foggy-headed. I would eat along with him even if I wasn’t hungry. This winter it caught up with me. I looked flabby for the first time in my life. Now we check-in to see if we are hungry before we eat. David’s realization helped me remember how good I felt when I took a mini-fast every Saturday, eating only fruit, juices and smoothies until dinner. David plans to join me. Fasting with a friend turned a routine cleanse into an awakening. Now aware of the complexity of my relationship with food, I clearly see and am committed to food’s primary purpose: nourishment.

How does the social, political and religious climate effect LGBT individuals and their relationships? The latest statistics still tell us that gay youth are more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, suicide and suicide attempts. Similar statistics are true for adult gays. As societal norms are changing and the debate is in full swing, there are signs that this is changing. These characteristics are important in one’s health and success, especially when living in a prejudiced environment: Managing other’s perceptions and reactions Positive self-acceptance Balance in life Transcendence of a victim perspective Pioneering Personal responsibility and integrity High degree of self-reliance Giving back, reaching back Faith (Children of the Dream: The Psychology of Black Success, Edwards & Polite) As individuals become empowered to view themselves positively, their emotional health and relationship success improve dramatically. Wise Woman Approach to Pre and Post Menopause By Nancy Russell, M.D. In her book, The Wisdom of Menopause, Christiane Northrup, M.D. challenges conventional medicine. Dr. Northrup says, “The change” or menopause is not simply a collection of physical problems to be “fixed”—whether with hormones or herbs—but a mind-body revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth. There is a connection between menopause and a woman’s emotional and spiritual life. The choices a woman makes at this time in her life, from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet, either secure her health and well-being for the rest of her life, or put her future at risk.” Menopause is defined as no menstrual periods for 12 months. The time prior to actually stopping your periods and starting to have symptoms of hormonal changes can be 5 to 10 years. This pre-menopausal time is caused by a decrease in progesterone and therefore the estrogen hormone is dominant. Estrogen dominant symptoms can include: irregular menstrual periods, excessive bleeding with periods, bloating, breast swelling and tenderness, mood swings like irritability and depression, weight gain around the middle and hips and premenstrual headaches. Other estrogen dominant symptoms include ovarian cysts, cystic and lumpy breasts, endometriosis, anxiety and easy to anger. Some women have minimal symptoms of pre-menopause and just glide through gracefully. These women handle stress well, have a healthy lifestyle and positive relationships. The next step in the “change” is to stop having menstrual periods and estrogen drops off rapidly over a few weeks to months. Low estrogen symptoms can include: hot flashes, night sweats, non-restful sleep, heart palpitations, fuzzy thinking, vaginal dryness, low sex drive and moodiness. Low testosterone often accompanies or precedes the drop in estrogen and can cause symptoms of decreased sex drive, decreased overall energy and stamina, decreased ability to build muscle and thinning pubic hair. Another reason for all of these varied symptoms can be caused due to stress on the thyroid and adrenal glands, as well as the brain neurotransmitters during pre and post menopause. With our stressful lifestyles, many women start into menopause with exhausted resources. The most common stressors that women may face at this time are: excessive unremitting worry, anger, guilt, anxiety or fear, depression, excessive or lack of exercise, exposure to toxins, chronic allergies, overwork, late hours, insufficient sleep, surgery, chronic illness or unhealed trauma or injury. Because of the significant impact menopause may bring to women’s lives, there are many and varied treatment possibilities. Start by being proactive and work on lifestyle factors. I have outlined steps to improve lifestyle in my article in the June issue of Evolving and it can also be found on my

website: www.drnancy.com under archived newsletters. If you are still experiencing significant symptoms, there are herbs and over the counter natural progesterone creams that can be very effective. Dr. Christiane Northrup’s book, The Wisdom of Menopause has several considerations for menopause, as well as adrenal and thyroid support. If all lifestyle and nutraceutical approaches are not successful, then a balanced approach using individualized bioidentical hormone replacement can be considered. These prescription-strength hormones are prescribed by physicians and prepared by compounding pharmacies using extracts from soybeans and yams. The molecular structure of these hormones are designed to be an exact match to the human body. These bioidentical hormones can be given in several forms, including capsules, troches, creams or suppositories. Even though they are natural, monitoring of hormone levels is advised as well as annual gynecology exams. Side effects can occur, so normal precautions and close monitoring by a physician is recommended. When it comes to hormone replacement therapy, the science we look to for answers can be inconsistent, influenced by market forces, and confusing to researchers, physicians and patients alike. As Dr. Northrup says, “The blessing is that this dilemma forces us to tune in more fully to our inner wisdom, and to make our choices in full partnership with our intuition and intellect. This approach to menopause is the essence of feminine wisdom.” Approaching menopause in not an easy, one-size-fits-all answer. Some women may need or want hormone replacement therapy, some simply don’t! In my practice of medicine, I enjoy a partnership with women on their journey through menopause; assessing their individual situations, educating about the details and guiding them in their choices. The choices may be nutritional and herbal support, neurotransmitter support, prescription hormones, emotional and spiritual growth or a combination of these approaches. My recommendations are: educate yourself, add a large dose of intuition, prayer and meditation, and feed and exercise your body well. Yes, you can proceed through this transition with boldness, poise and grace. Nancy Russell, M.D., holistic Internal medicine physician has practiced in the Kansas City northland for 28 years. Dr. Russell blends traditional and alternative medicine in her holistic medical practice. As a founding member of the American Board of Holistic medicine, she is board certified in holistic medicine. Dr Russell believes, “Love is our most powerful medicine”. Holistic medicine is individualized, gets to the root of the problem and develops a partnership between physician and patient. If you could fly, your perspective on the world around you would be completely different. Imagine how empowered you would feel if you could rise above your limitations and do what you thought was impossible. Sumya Anani knows this feeling and has spent the last 14 years making the impossible a reality for herself and those around her willing to learn. Her “there’s nothing I can’t do” journey began in the early 1990s when her self-defense instructor encouraged this young massage therapist to try boxing. She trained rigorously and launched her professional boxing career in August of 1996, quickly making a name for herself as a formidable opponent. By December of 1998, after a number of impressive knockout fights, she caught the attention of Christy Martin, who was sitting on a 34-bout winning streak and held the world welterweight championship title. Sumya, the newcomer, defeated Christy Martin and instantly became a women’s boxing star. In addition to a thriving boxing career, Sumya continued to lift weights, practice massage therapy and teach yoga. Her dedication to living a harmonious, well-balanced life was often a newsworthy topic and Sumya took every opportunity to educate her fans on the benefits of healing touch and healthier life choices. Articles written about her boxing feats often noted the irony— peaceful healer and world champion force-to-be-reckoned-with boxer. She was known for her dedicated pursuit of improving the quality of life and pushing her mind and body to new heights, both in and out of the ring. The body is an amazing machine, capable of great strength and unbelievable endurance. Unfortunately, the mind is just as, if not more, powerful. Negative thoughts become truths and these truths become an unsubstantiated reality. So, even if the body is physically capable, the reality becomes a paralysis, causing most to avoid attempting what they believe to be impossible. Sumya has a thirst for knowledge and grabs every occasion to experience something new or push to conquer the impossible. Her philosophy is simple: 1) no negative thoughts, 2) there’s nothing I can’t do and 3) have childlike “look-at-me” fun whenever possible. Sumya’s drive to aim high while enjoying the journey is the whole reason she took an aerial acrobatics fitness class in the summer of 2006 while on vacation in Colorado. With her body already in peak condition, she thought it would be a fun new experience. Turns out, it

was not only fun, but exhilarating, empowering and more of a workout than she expected. For months, Sumya traveled the country, taking every class she could find so she could become an aerial fitness instructor. Today, she has taken a step back from boxing to focus on offering empowering traditional and nontraditional fitness classes. In May of 2010, Sumya’s Learning2Fly studio moved into the geometric dome at Lamar and I-35. This building is perfect for her as it offers both a spacious yoga studio and a twenty-five foot aerial studio, which is impressive, whimsical and somehow grounding. The walls are painted to match the chakras and brightly colored silky material dangles serenely from the ceiling above two foot thick floor mats. Sumya started her aerial fitness, circus arts and yoga center to bring healthy fun to Kansas City through classes, workshops and private parties. She combines the modalities of the seven chakras in each of her programs using fitness and fun to teach nutrition, exercise, personal growth, family & community, environment, global activism and spirituality. Her students range in shape, size, walk-of-life, and age—the oldest being a sixty-four year old man. Although she loves helping everyday people–her passion is working with young people. Her summer youth camps involve engaging activities to teach self-expression, nutrition, and fitness. Negative and limiting beliefs are usually formed during youth and dynamically shape a person’s life. Sumya believes she can help everyone “weed the garden of the mind” by replacing negative limits with empowering accomplishments. Everyday, Sumya teaches her students to challenge their limiting beliefs, change their perspective of themselves and the world, and acknowledge even the smallest of accomplishments. “When once you have tasted flight you will always walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward: for there you have been and there you will always be.” —Henry Van Dyke Sumya Anani ~ Learning2Fly 4711 Lamar, Mission, KS 66202 913-262-2600, sumya_anani@msn.com Jayana DeWolf is forging new ground as a business and marketing consultant dedicated to helping small businesses, non-profits and independent professionals. Dating and a Pyschic Medium By Traci Bray Some of you may find this article hilarious (as is intended). If you’ve read any of my articles in past issues of Evolving, you’ll know that I am a Medium and a psychic. To me, a Medium is one who has the ability to connect the living with those whom have passed away. All Mediums are "psychic." For me, "psychic" equates to having established meaningful communication with other miscellaneous genres of consciousness, allowing me opportunity to share information I receive with clients. Well into the second decade of professional psychic Medium work, I am often asked about how the work affects me. Questions run the gamut of how my family deals with the work to how it affects my daily life. Seldom has anyone asked about what dating is like for me. For practical purposes, I am heterosexual. I have been divorced for twentyone years. During that time I have dated a number of men, and a handful remain the greatest of friends. And recently, “The One” arrived. His arrival is truly a story for another time, and what a story it is! But back to the humor promised at the onset of this piece. Let me share some vignettes of dating experiences when, as I phrase it, “The Mediumthing,” emerges. Oh, and have I mentioned, I AM UNABLE TO READ FOR MYSELF? This is true. My intuition is keen, but reading for myself–nope. Doesn’t happen. Thus, dating for me is a similar adventure to anyone else who has dated, with a twist. First let me address a handful of the endings out-of-the-starting-gate that I rejected, thank God. When I’ve mentioned that I’m a Medium, responses include: “So, does that mean you’ll know when I cheat on you?” “Have you been able to tell if other guys have cheated on you?” “Will you be able to know what I really like in bed without me telling you?” “You knew, didn’t you, about why my last marriage ended? Didn’t you?” “You know what I’m thinking right now, don’t you? What I want? C’mon. Tell me!” And my (least) favorite, “So what did you think would become of us when you met me?” After developing a nice “thing” with a fairly well-known local guy, I realized that we weren’t meeting his friends, family, nor co-workers. I questioned that and he hedged on a direct response. I questioned more. Quote he, “Well, they’ll (family, friends, etc.),

know what you do.” I inquired, “What do you mean they’ll ‘know what I do?” After an excessive amount of “you know/no I don’t know,” exchanges, I learned that his concern was that others would discover he was having sex with a medium. This presumably would lead to a concern about what others might have about his credibility. My response was, “No, the credibility concern is mine.” And to the wayside he went. Similar variations on this theme played out over time, with my ability to discern earlier evident. I’m not certain I ever spotted them in advance, however. Have I mentioned that I do not read for myself? Now, there have been delightful moments of mediumship during dates. One occurred on a Super Bowl Sunday when my date and I headed to a sports club to meet his adult children to watch The Game. This date was most respectful of The Medium-thing, a very appropriate man, a retired Marine. As we were parting ways during a time-out for a bathroom break, I grabbed his arm and said, “Wait a minute.” He said, “Whaaaat?” Rarely do I experience what I term “bleed-through” in my daily life. What “bleed-through” in this case meant was that a psychic message was coming through, and after a rapid gaze, I decided to speak it. I demanded, “David, don’t look at the TV. DON’T!” A commercial was playing. “Whaaaat?” he again asked. I said, “The next play.” He looked at the TV and I repeated, “DON’T!” I had his attention and continued, “The next play. There’s going to be a fumble. The ball will be picked up, a touchdown will be made, and that’s all she wrote.” Exactly as I finished speaking, the ball went into play, and what I had been shown immediately played itself out. He looked at me, gasping like a carp out of water. Sputtering. he said, “Well why didn’t you tell me you could do this? I could’ve bet on the damned game?” We laughed. I loved him; I think he loved me. It didn’t last. He remains a friend. It was only with the New Guy I’m With did ever the picture-perfect response arrive following my spiel of, “Well, I have something to tell you about me that could be a deal-breaker. I’m a Medium, as-in ‘psychic.'” Letting this cat-out-of-the-bag can be risky when sitting across the table from a retired cop and Marine. He smiled. He looked down at his plate. He looked me in the eye and said, “Well, would it be a deal-breaker if I told you I’ve had my house space-cleared?” I smiled back. We’ve been smiling ever since. Energy Healing School Introduction to Energy Healing Workshop August 7, 2010 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Inspiration Deficit Disorder Inspiration Deficit Disorder: The No Pill Prescription to End High Stress, Low Energy and Bad Habits

This is an informational and experiential workshop designed for people to expand their knowledge and practical capabilities for working with healing energy.

By Jonathan Ellerby, Ph.D Do you feel stuck in one or more areas of your life? Do you lack the time to regularly renew yourself and enjoy your interests? Are you relying on caffeine, anti-depressants, anxiety medications or alcohol to manage your stress and emotional well-being? If so, you might be suffering from what author Jonathan Ellerby has identified as “Inspiration Deficit Disorder”. In his new book, Inspiration Deficit Disorder: The No Pill Prescription to End High Stress, Low Energy and Bad Habits (Hay House, August 15, 2010/ $ 14.95 ) he reveals this modern epidemic and offers practical and holistic solutions for regaining your vitality and living your best life. “An inspiration deficit occurs whenever we feel unfulfilled or somehow unexpressed in an important aspect of life –something is missing; a job we don’t like, a struggle with self image, a relationship we aren’t satisfied with, are all examples of where we may feel an inspiration deficit. When we let these deficits persist they translate into, addictions, bad habits, poor health, and high stress –sadly, most people have it to some degree and it impacts their health and happiness more than they know,” shares Ellerby. As the Spiritual Program Director for the world renowned Canyon Ranch Health Resorts he has successfully guided thousands to live more balanced, mindful and authentic, heart centered lives. This is a handbook for those seeking change based on what has worked for people across generations and cultures. In Inspiration Deficit Disorder, Ellerby offers a roadmap back to your “essential” self. He encourages readers to listen to their inner spirit and ask “Is there more to who I am?” … “Is there more I have to share with the world?” In the first part of the book you are guided through a simple way to review and make sense of your life experiences and how they have shaped your current access to your greatest joys and worst habits. He helps you define Inspiration Deficit Disorder (IDD) and shares real life client success stories along with checklists to indentify whether you may be suffering from IDD. Ellerby helps you discover what your wall of wounding is, which can often keep us stuck in destructive patterns or relationships. According to Ellerby, “It is important that

913-831-4422 ~ 6045 Martway, Suite 104, Mission, KS 66202 www.CoreStarEnergyHealing.com

people take the important step of indentifying their wounds and delve into their inner landscape with the knowingness that everything they need is already inside of them. The first step is awareness.” The second part of the book offers an “Inspired Living Prescription” with tips, tools, resources, checklists and more for creating lasting peace, vitality and joy in your life. A Holistic Checklist provides a daily or weekly “check in” with themselves and will keep on them track in their transformation. “I wrote this book because in my work, I often have only brief windows to help people make major change and face huge challenges. When we part ways, I have to recommend a shopping cart full of books and CDs to help keep them on track, but few resources are both comprehensive and simple to understand. So, I wanted to create a tool kit for people to easily access and return to along their path of change. This book summarizes the best ideas, techniques and strategies to create health and happiness that I have found in all my years of research, travel and clinical work. My goal was to create a synthesis of the most important elements people need to understand and to put it in simple language and easy to apply steps.”

Change Your

Habits Change Your

Libido ByTerry Hug What a crazy world! If our great, great grandparents could see how the pharmaceutical companies are pushing a testosterone patch and medications to help women have a more satisfying sexual encounter. And then all that Viagra and Cialis to help men maintain a better sex life. Even many young, healthy and virile men are seeking the drugs to make things downstairs work better. Then when you add up all the side effects like facial hair for women and an increased chance of cancer, most of us might prefer to not make any sudden decisions. Men are getting headaches and an increased possibility of heart attack, sudden hearing loss and stroke with the drugs. Would our ancestors laugh or just tell us how stupid we are? What about just getting in better shape, eating better and taking the time to improve our health? All the articles on libido tell you to exercise, eat right and get checked for a medical condition. I want to talk about a few other things that will help. First, get rid of the belly fat! Do a cleanse of the body. Then add some good nutrient-rich foods to your diet. Be preventative and start healing your body before it becomes diseased. Try some natural healthy solutions so you do not need the drugs. Pharmaceutical drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. This year it is estimated 106,000 people will die from complications from pharmaceutical drugs. Lay on your back and push your abdomen back and forth. If it is loose and bouncy you probably have excess fluid due to fluid from the liver and/or inflammation of the bowels. There is a drink for you to drink for two to three

weeks to help eliminate that belly fat. It is acidic and should not be done longer. If you like it, take a month off after finishing and repeat once. You must eliminate sugar in your diet, including wheat products and heavy foods. It is best to just eat fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs and nuts. Drink 3x a day, preferably 15 minutes before a meal. Adjust the cranberry and vinegar to your taste, start with less and then increase. Most people lose up to four inches and 10 pounds. For one regular size pitcher: 4 to 6 ounces of unsweetened or just cranberry Juice 1 to 2 fresh squeezed lemons 3 to 6 teaspoons organic apple cider vinegar Fill the pitcher to top with good water Two or three weeks after finishing the belly fat improvement, you are ready for a cleanse. There are so many! Ask your health professional or go to the health food store and get help. Spend at least three months cleansing. You will feel great for years if you spend the time. Here is the order: ♦

♦ ♦ ♦

Bowell Cleanse first if you have any constipation or diarrhea problems Parasite cleanse for eight to 16 weeks. If you see suspicious things that do not seem to be pooh, do the 16 weeks. Gallbladder cleanse and Hydrangea for calcium deposits Liver cleanse Finish with a heavy metal cleanse.

Drugs to avoid to improve your Libido are birth control pills and

patches, antidepressants such as Prozak, and drugs for diabetes. Hopefully after the cleanse you will be able to eliminate or find natural alternatives. Ask your doctor for help. Now some foods to help the libido. Celery releases osterone, an odorless hormone in male perspiration that turns women on. Oysters are high in Zinc and raise sperm and testosterone production in men. Bananas alkalize the body and the potassium can help energy. Avocados have high levels of folic acid which help metabolize proteins giving more energy. For essential fatty acids eat almonds, walnuts, pecans and other nuts. Eggs are high in B6 and B5 which help balance hormone levels and fight stress. Figs improve sexual stamina. Garlic contains allicin, which increases blood flow to

sex organs. And a great food for women is dark chocolate, which contains phenylethylamine, which gives them the “being in love” feeling. That is why chocolate is the gift of love! This is the perfect time to spend time on yourself to become healthier and improve your libido. At first this looks difficult. After a couple of weeks you will feel the difference and hopefully your partner will too. Think about all the fun you will have next winter! Living Your Essence By Diane Davis Reed Navigating through the expectations of yourself and others can be exhausting. Continually reaching for the end goal, anxious about the outcome and the reactions to your results, the journey you are navigating may appear hazardous, filled with uncertainty and obstacles. At the end of the day there is no satisfaction and no assurance that tomorrow will be easier, that you will reach your desired destination. Perhaps the cause of such exhausting and unsuccessful effort is the nature of your goal. Rather than seeking to acquire or accomplish a particular end result, look not at what you are doing, but how you are BEING. When

you consider your destination, stay present in the NOW. When you choose actions to take, ask yourself if this particular action done in this particular way, at this particular time, feels resonant for you. Ask yourself, is this of my essence? How do you know something is of your essence? The answer lies within you. Sitting quietly, slow your breath; relax your body; still your mind. Dive deeply within your heart, mind and body. Listen with all your senses– body, mind, emotions, imagination, and your own inner knowing. You may not feel comfortable listening in this way. You may become

distracted by your thoughts. You may not have a sense of your inner knowing. The key to this inner knowing is TRUST. Trust what is revealed to you by your intuition. In this quiet, relaxed state, ask your Essence to come forth, to reveal itself to you by image or sound, sensation, or insight. Whatever comes, receive it gratefully, accept it as a message from your inner guidance. Check your body, mind and emotions to see if it feels resonant. Ask yourself, “Is this of my essence?” The answer will come. If you receive silence, accept it. Continue listening. Focus on the information coming from all your ways of knowing. Ac-

cept it. Then plan your next steps based on that inner knowing. Retaining a Sense of Self in Relationships By Mandi Newton

From the dawn of time, we have longed for touch, searched for another to love, or to be loved, and ached for any loss in life... What is the difference between lust and love? These emotions seem to separate us from our own reality. Most of us do not have a strong sense of well being as we rely and lean on others for their comfort when we are really in debt to ourselves. According to a personal conversation with David Bruce Leonard, author of How to Worship the Goddess, and Keep Your Balls: A mans guide to sacred sex, we use about 60 percent of our emotions as an internal frame of reference—or of who we think we are. About 40 percent goes into our external sense of reference—or what we imagine others think of ourselves. Knowing our core values is the way we truly see ourselves. David also states, “Relationships are not safe! They expose who we are and long to be…” A psychological component that he says we can strengthen through a muscle in and throughout our Nervous Systems.

Longing for the caress of another is a chemical reaction that naturally takes us out of our daily stresses in life. As we have come into this world alone, with an ability to find our own path of family, friendship, hardships, and courtship, we make the choices to seek out our own destiny when it comes to sexuality and relationships... To keep sense of one's self, bottom line is: we came into this world having no choice to be comfortable in our skins; we must have the ability to remain comfortable when we begin to leave this world. To give our hearts to someone else, we then lose our ability to have heart to love oneself; for it is easy to knock down a tree without roots. To share your heart with the other, you have the ability to grow and learn from each other. Healthy trees are strongly rooted within their own systems. If not deeply rooted, branches grow together and crowd each other. If one is diseased, the other cannot hold itself up as it has also been diseased by the rooted infusion.

David Bruce Leonard states, “Relationships are a, Yoga, or a practice, that turns into integrity.” It is a process to learn who we are, and to give light in each other’s shadow. For the passion to care for another being, we must first have passion for ourselves. We cannot give all that we are to another person if all the being in us has been given away… By sharing thoughts, ideas, expressions, sorrows, and love, we also take on value in one another. For the thoughts of time can only move on throughout our lives, and our envy of one another carries on endlessly… We must grow and leave this world in our own skin. With the livelihood to seek out love, kindness, and a gentle understanding for intimacy, and with the fine line of what love really is... Is it reality, fantasy, love, or lust? To have to think so hard takes one away from creating their own individuality and kinship with the world. To share the art of love is to create life within each other. It is not to give one's life away to the other. For then,

what more does one have to offer to another, if this light within our selves have already been taken? When sudden darkness cures the light, we must slowly remove the pile of rubble to let the light back in… It can be a battle with incurable wounds along the way. We cannot have much energy for the need to continuously remove barriers before we decide to give up, just to see some light in another day. We might never see as much as we used to... Never give up on yourself, as this would be giving up on life. We must have faith that the person we sought out to be as we were children is the power we see within ourselves today. To stay awakened with our own roots of passion only grows us to be stronger people for the world we must face. Share your love, grow your love.

Never Argue with a 105-Year-Old Woman About Who is the Boss! by Ann Butenas A couple of months ago, I drove out to Russell, Kansas, to visit my 105-yearold grandma, Kora. It is always a treat to visit her, as her wit, wisdom, and passion for life never cease to amaze me. During the course of our conversation, I had the opportunity to ask her the most compelling of all questions. I wanted to find out her answer to this question because my husband was in the room and I felt, knowing how my grandma thinks, her response would be of great benefit to him. So, I proceeded with the inquiry. “Grandma,” I begin, “What makes for a successful marriage?” Without missing a beat, she asks, looking first at me and then darting a troubled glance at my husband. “Why? Are you having trouble?” I laugh and say, “No, not at all. I just want to know how you and Grandpa kept the romantic and loving fires burning for over 50 years.” With an understanding nod, Grandma tells me, “That’s easy. Be the boss!” I send a knowing glance to my husband, making sure he catches that sentiment. He does, but for some reason, doesn't find the inherent humor in it as I do. I turn back to my grandma and ask her to elaborate. “When I say you should be the boss, I mean you, as the woman, should take care of all of the household things, the bills, the finances, the kids, and all of the major decisions. Just let the man take care of whatever is left in the garage. Let him worry about the car and the trash.” I am still enamored with her quick sentiment: Be the boss! I love it! Visions of me dictating the who, the what, the where, and the when dance in my mind. Then my husband of 16 years brings me back to earth and tells me, “Ann, you do all of that already. You

trained me well.” During my brief stay at Grandma’s house, her sound advice became evident when I was downstairs looking for some important papers. I came across a dusty old stationary box and decided to see what was inside. To my surprise and amazement, there were several letters my grandmother and grandfather had written to each other as newlyweds in 1927. They were temporarily separated by 400 miles while my grandfather was doing an internship at a pharmacy in another city. Below are a couple of letters that show my grandma meant business when it came to “being the boss!” The letter is typed in this article exactly in the manner it was originally written, with no changes in the grammar, spelling or arrangement of the words. At the time Kora wrote this to her new husband, Lloyd, she was 22 years old. He was 26. Russell, Kansas 7-21-27 My dearest Lloyd, Received your letter this morn. Was in

Kora at her 80th birthday celebration.

Grandma Kora bed when it came but I got up then & don’t think I didn’t. I was plenty homesick for you anyway. Went to Grace’s party last nite and had a rotten time. Was so homesick all during the evening. All the rest had their men & how I wanted you. Lloyd, I’m sure ready to come back to you. Sadie & I are invited over to Beaulah’s tomorrow nite for dinner. I may go over this pm for awhile. Sadie & I are going down town after while I want to go & see Dr. Browne. Called up Esther this morn to see how Wanda Jean is. She said W.J. was much better, which sounds good, doesn’t it, honey? Mrs. Householder met me yesterday & said, “I hear you got so homesick that when you would wash dishes you would sit down & cry & then go back & wash dishes & then cry again.” It sure makes me mad. She insinuated enuf that we weren’t getting along very well and Mrs. Himes told her that. I made some valances for our dining room and bathroom windows in our apartment this morning. Tell Nell I may send them on ahead & have her put them up so they’ll be up when I come back with company–whoever that mite be. Received our Aetna yesterday. We are paid up until October it states. I keep our car in dad’s garage. You be on the lookout for a garage there. Well, sweet, be a good hubby. Love me lots like you do & write me a long letter telling me all you do. Better not take any more meals with Nell and T.J. I don’t want to feel obligated. You can afford to eat downtown. Gee, I’ve sure got the blues. Heaps and heaps of love. Yours alone, Kora

I have a box of such letters. It is so interesting to read them and see the dynamics of the relationship that blossomed between my grandparents. Finding these letters in 2010 was quite a discovery, and they are soon to become fodder for the book I am penning on my grandma’s inspirational life of abundance entitled Koraspondence: Living Life to the Letter. So, if Kora was writing this article now, she might advise the women out there to go tend to the home fires (and you can work, too, as she worked for a prominent lawyer in town.) Men, head out to the garage and tend to those cars! Hey! It worked for my grandparents for over 50 years. Grandma really loved him, as she has spent the last 31 years as a thriving widow, still taking care of things around the house while my uncle now comes over periodically to dabble with the car in the garage, directly from spirit.

Kansas Citians know Ann Butenas as a writer, former publisher of a local monthly women’s magazine and host of two weekly talk radio shows. Her newest endeavor is a motivational tour in which she relays the candid story of her 105-year-young Grandma Kora to show audience members how to speak their minds and enjoy the results. Moving Beyond All or Nothing Sexuality By Karen Harrison

Do you find yourself either having intercourse or no sexuality or affection at all? If so, you are like many of the couples I work with in my marriage and family and sex therapy practice. Why? Here are the common reasons:. One partner has more desire than the other, more often the male, but not always. The female then is reluctant to be affectionate because the other partner might interpret it as a sexual advance. She is already having more sex than she wants and doesn’t want to invite additional sex. Another situation is the female has one of many kinds of vaginal pain problems, hormonal issues or recurrent vaginal infections. These problems are usually treatable by a gynecologist, sometimes in combination with a sex therapist or physical therapist who specializes in women’s pelvic floor issues. Some women feel embarrassed and avoid seeking help. Men may want to avoid sexuality due to problems getting or maintaining an erection or struggling with premature ejaculation. A history of sexual abuse for women or men can cause flashbacks during sex that make sex unpleasant. The couple may have trouble with birth control methods, so they fear getting pregnant. These are the more common reasons couples abstain from sexuality. When couples adopt the approach of intercourse or nothing at all, they often find themselves having less affection, touch and closeness. Over time, partners can drift apart. My opinion is that God gave couples affection and sexuality to get them through the rough parts of life like conflict, working, having children, finances, chores, sickness, loss, etc. What can couples do to create closeness instead of having sex or nothing? Ah, I am so glad you asked! There are so many options. Consider the whole body as a pleasure center. Give your partner a head massage. It is easy to do this by having the giver sit on the sofa and the receiver sit on the floor. Or the giver sits on the sofa or bed and the receiver places his or her head in the other’s lap. Try different touches and even grab chunks of hair and pull lightly. Ask the receiver to tell the giver if he or she would like the touch harder, softer, slower, or faster and if he or she would like a different spot rubbed. Give a neck and shoulder rub. Move on over to the ears and find lots of ways to delight your partner. Many find the ears to be an erotic zone. Giving a hand or foot massage can relax your partner. Most people love a back massage and it becomes more fun when you do this on the floor and straddle your partner’s back. They don’t get that in a traditional massage! Put blankets underneath for cushioning with a sheet or towel on top to catch any oil. I like to suggest that one partner give for 10 to 20 min-

utes and then switch. Make sure each partner gets a turn giving and receiving. Some couples get in a rut with one always being the giver and the other the receiver. Awaken the senses of your partner in a wonderful way. One partner is the receiver and sits or lays down with eyes closed or even blindfolded. The other uses items that have been previously selected for the experience such as feathers, silk, fur, scents, ice cubes, rattle, etc. The giver touches the receiver with the items, wafts the scent under the receiver’s nose, or makes the sounds nearby. Take about 15 to 20 minutes and then switch. Another way to enjoy the senses is to do the same experience with food such as cut-up fruits, strips of vegetables, cheese, chocolate, or nuts. Have the receiver sit up for this experience. Waft the food under the receiver’s nose, slide it across his or her lips, and then suggest he or she eat the food slowly and succulently, savoring each bite. These are two of the exercises we have done in the Sacred Relationship/tantra classes that I teach. One woman remarked after the experience that it was better than sex!

Dancing is a great way to connect. Put on something slinky, sexy, or wear nothing at all and boogie to music that moves you both. Or have some fun and dance for your partner. Women can dance like a pole dancer, belly dancer, ballerina, or do regular dancing. Men and women enjoy moving to drum music that evokes our primitive natures.

monize your couple energy because breathing together literally gets you on the same wave length so that it is easier to communicate.

Sit across from one another and gaze into your partner’s left eye, considered to be the window to the soul. Intend to send love from your eyes to your partner and to see beyond your partner’s personality into his or her soul while allowing yourself to be seen. Start out with just a couple of minutes and work up to five minutes or more.

Remember how hot it was to kiss for extended periods of time when you were a teenager? Try it again with a twist. Have one partner be the giver and the other the receiver. The giver shows the receiver how he or she likes to be kissed. Then switch. Do you like to play games? Go to www.mypleasure.com or www.bettersex.com and search on games. There are a variety of games that are sure to be more fun than Scrabble—and everyone wins! I hope you are inspired to reconnect with your partner in new ways that will enhance your relationship, your closeness, and make life together more fun and rewarding. Try one idea and then another! If you are struggling in any area of your sex life, consider seeking out a certified sex therapist at www.AASECT.com.

Lay together in spoon position with one partner’s back against the other’s belly and synchronize your breathing for five minutes. Then switch positions. This is a great way to har-

Spiritual Horoscope for August By Aluna Michaels, M.A. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Happy birthday Leo! Relationships are improving. You’re more able to express who you truly are. You’re also attracting people who want to know you at depth, rather than superficial people who only want your public persona. You could even have a breakthrough with a sibling, who becomes like a new best friend. Your connection with your soul is getting stronger, so please meditate daily to increase the amount of guidance you can receive! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) It’s a burden when you’re always the responsible one in a relationship. Look at why you attract compulsive spenders when you’re so thrifty. . . or why you draw commitmentphobes when you’re ready to settle down. This can be a way for you to remain in control and to avoid intimacy. Have the courage to let go of connections that make you the parent to a childish adult so you can bond with an equal! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Saturn in your sign has been making you feel old. But Saturn is also the planet of wisdom, steadiness and balance! This month, you’ll feel rejuvenated and confident. Meditate on how much you’ve learned about yourself so far this calendar year. You’ll be putting your lessons into action and feeling the hard times were worth it. If you’ve had any health issues, they should resolve because of your patience and persistence.

events

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Meditation and inner reflection will help you let go of old relationship patterns. Ask friends for insights into how you limit yourself. If single, be open to go out with people who “aren’t your type”. If partnered, devise ways to renew the bond with your mate so you see each other through fresh eyes. Try usual activities so you’re each out of your comfort zone and discover things together. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) If you’re having problems at work, don’t make any rash decisions this month. Instead, have a meeting with good friends to go over your professional strengths and talents. You’ll gain confidence as well as a clear assessment of your skills. This also applies to relationships. You’re not seeing the entire picture on your own. Make changes late in September, either within current circumstances, or seek new opportunities. It’s your spiritual step to be patient, so hang in there! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Your goals in life are changing. You might even be exploring new types of spirituality that expand your mind and make you look at life choices differently. Meditate and visualize who you’ll be in the future. What are your emotions like? What kind of relationships do you have? What’s your career like? Now sit back and observe your world and look for spiritual signals that excite you. You’ll leap to action without fear!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Allow yourself to change. Don’t worry how other people will be affected by your growth. It’s especially important to define your boundaries in intimate relationships. Having emotional clarity will bring more closeness in a healthy partnership. If it causes disruption, then maybe you should let go because the bond is dysfunctional. A good partner will be happy you want to evolve as a soul and will be proud of you for setting limits. It’s a sign of your increasing self-value! Aries (March 21 – April 19) Be aware how subconscious anger interferes with relationships. You could be starting with a new person, or getting ready for more commitment with a current partner. Meditate to be able to release old triggers from past bonds, and also from your childhood. If your responses to current situations feel sudden and sharp, they’re old and need to be healed! With Mercury retrograde, there’ll be misunderstandings and plenty of “opportunity for growth”! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Are you overworking as a way to avoid intimacy? Ask your partner if he or she would like more time with you. If single, see if you’re putting out “unavailable” signals. Also

beware of being busy to distract yourself from issues that need healing. Make time to meditate each day. Just sit and breathe for five minutes so you can feel close to your center. It’s a great time to make a new healthy eating plan, or add new types of stress reduction to your routine. Tai chi or yoga would be great! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You might be starting a new relationship with long-term potential! Meditate on releasing old patterns from childhood. Don’t let old beliefs about your emotional limitations keep you from being loved! If already partnered, you’ll be able to break through old obstacles that make you feel separated from love. In career news, if you hear about a new job, hold off until you are sure of details. Mercury is retrograde until mid-August! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You could gain many insights into your subconscious if you meditate this month. Your soul wants to reveal emotional “trip wires” that cause you to be unhappy or to pick dysfunctional people. But if you’re not internally still you won’t get these important messages. It might help to ask spiritually-minded friends to meditate with you so you’ll be more motivated and empowered to begin this soulful search!
