Dear Friend, The articles in Evolving this month focus on creating tradition. I believe traditions, like life, are cyclical. With the passage of generations and transition of time, traditions change. And sometimes they’re abandoned, forgetting the warmth, comfort and familiarity that comes from established tradition. When I was a child, traditions were relished rituals in which I participated. I remember as a child going “hunting” on Christmas day with my dad, uncle and cousins. I was the only girl—and was very proud. When I was older there was sledding at the park and Volksmarches with Grandpa. Sister Mary, then in the military, would create custom cadences for us to chant. Then when I established my own family I started new traditions as well as incorporated cherished ones from my and the children’s father’s past. Then the kids grew up and moved out. Somewhere along the years I forgot to start new traditions. New ones that invite elders, grown children as well as grandchildren into the circle of love. So now I have the opportunity to remember favorite rituals of youth as well as create new ones, based on current needs and values. The articles this month offer an array of advice on the importance of ritual as well as ways to remember past traditions and incorporate new. There are suggestions for possible traditions, including some for pets! And there’s also an article on finding a way to celebrate even during periods of grief. I hope you enjoy the delightful selections this month. May you find peace in ritual and your holidays be blessed.

The Dice Game of Shiva An Interview with author Richard Smoley The Dice Game of Shiva—that’s an intriguing title for a book. What does it mean? It refers to a Hindu myth in which the god Shiva plays a game of dice—essentially a kind of strip Parcheesi—with his consort, Parvati. The strange thing is that Shiva always loses. He loses everything to Parvati, even his clothing, but it doesn’t make any difference to him. He goes off to the forest and lives as a hermit. Eventually Parvati comes in search of him, and they’re reunited in the end. That’s a strange story. What’s it about? It’s about one of the central issues that has always perplexed philosophers—the nature of consciousness. Shiva represents consciousness—and in the book I define consciousness as the capacity to relate self and other. And Parvati? What does she represent? What consciousness experiences—the totality of the world, inner and outer. But how can I not be my thoughts, my feelings, and so on? Those are what I am. No, they’re not! You can step back and see

them; you can watch them like a film passing before your eyes. That’s the purpose of many—maybe most—meditation practices. They’re meant to show you that there’s something behind all the junk that passes through your mind, and that that something is what you really are.

are one.” Most Christians misunderstand this. They think that Jesus is talking about himself. But really this “I,” this capacity to say “I am,” is, so to speak, the point where we connect with God. Haven’t we heard any number of times that one of the most sacred and profound names of God is “I am”?

So then everything in the world is just kind of a film that I’m watching? You and everybody else. In each of us there is this true Self, which witnesses. It exists in animals, plants, even in inanimate matter.

So why should I pray to God? Well, I said that God is the source both of self and other. So we can experience God as other also. Some theologians take this to the point of saying that God is “wholly other,” but I would say that that’s just half of the picture. When you feel God as other, then you pray to God. When you rest in stillness in the center of your being, you feel God as Self. We can experience it sometimes one way, sometimes another.

How is that? Well, I said that consciousness is the capacity to relate self and other. For anything to exist at all, it must have some amount of this capacity, however small. Even a hydrogen atom must somehow be able to “recognize” an oxygen atom if it is to bond with it to form water. This is not consciousness as we know it in ourselves, but still it’s consciousness of a kind. Where is God in all this? God is, I would say, the ineffable source out of which this primordial distinction of self and other arise. So in one sense God is yourself. Isn’t that what all the mystical traditions are saying? Jesus, in the Gospel of John, alludes to this when he says, “I and the Father

What’s the way out? Well, the first step is awakening. Simply becoming aware of this Self in you, this “I” that witnesses. It doesn’t require great mystical powers. Deep down, we all know that there is something that says “I” in us. And that this something lies deeper than our ego with its desires and anxieties and agendas. Some philosophers say that simply becoming aware of this fact is enough, and at times that’s true. But for most of us need something

more, and I would say that a good meditation practice would be a helpful way of probing deeper into these truths. And there is also prayer in the more familiar sense, in which we approach God as other. Of course there’s more to the situation than this. There are questions of cosmic justice, of science versus spirituality, and there’s also the most perplexing issue of all—causality—the issue of what causes what, which has perplexed philosophers more than practically any other problem they’ve had to face. In my book I go into these issues at much greater length. But recognizing the truths I’ve sketched out here is, I’m convinced, already a big step.

The Healer’s Path By Jill Dutton For some reason the mind has a hard time processing mystical experiences. When you meet a true healer, it’s as if the brain becomes muddled, unable to understand what’s happening. Then afterwards, the event slowly becomes as a dream, making you wonder if it really happened at all. The brain starts rationalizing, saying it couldn’t have possibly happened; or, if it did, it meant nothing. I had such an opportunity this month. I met Luci Enyart with pre-established skepticism. The person who referred me to her said she is one of the few true healers he has met. As a somewhat realist, I try to seek a balance between realism and idealism. So when I met with Luci, I wanted to keep an open mind, but I was also wary. I believe a true healer exudes passion and energy. Luci does both, but in such a subtle way it’s almost overlooked. Her business, Balances, is a merging of practices that are almost as hard to categorize. She is an RN with over 25 years experience, performs Reiki, offers personal coaching, does distance healing, is an enzyme specialist, works with biokinetics and is a colonic specialist.

With such a plethora of talents, she works with each individual based on their particular needs. Many come to Luci for help with digestive prob-

lems, chronic pain and constipation. Others value her psychic/intuitive work. No matter who she sees, she blends her knowledge to custom-create a healing plan. Sometimes, Luci simply holds a patient’s hand and tells them that death is not the enemy. Debbie,

a terminal patient, came to see Luci and told her, “My family won’t talk about my dying. What it will be like when I’m gone. I’m at peace and don’t have a problem with dying.” The next week, Luci called because Debbie had missed her appointment. She found out that Debbie had passed. Debbie’s mom told Luci that she regretted never having asked Debbie if she was ready to die. Luci told her, “I can help with that,” and they had a heartfelt talk. Luci’s work is her calling. About living with purpose she says, “Don’t do it for anyone else. Do it because you don’t know any other way.” A few weeks after our meeting and I’m still trying to process the experience. I typically spend about 15, sometimes 30 minutes with a person when interviewing them for an article. After an hour and a half that seemed like minutes, I left in a daze. When I got into my car, lying in the driver’s seat was an enormous, glorious red leaf, spread open like a hand, waiting for me. Asked later, Luci says the leaf represents energy and passion. But whose, I’m not sure. For additional information or to set an appointment, Luci Enyart can be reached at 816-361-5065.

Looking Back to Move Forward By Bethany Klug, DO Before the advent of the electric light, most of us rose at sunrise and retired at sunset. This meant we slept more, 14 hours a night by Christmas, 9 ½ hours on average. With the exception of vegetables like kale, we ate what we could store—nuts, apples, cabbages, squashes and root vegetables such as carrots, beets, turnips and rutabagas—or what we could kill. We ate far less sugar. Sugar use was nearly unknown in Europe until the mid 1500’s and then only by nobility. By 1700 per capita sugar consumption was four pounds per year. Two hundred years later it was only five pounds. A sweet treat then was made from nuts, dried fruits such as figs or dates, honey or molasses. Americans now sleep only 6 ½ hours on average and eat two to three pounds of sugar per week. It is the reason we are fat sick and tired, according to T.S. Wiley in her book Lights Out! Sleep, Sugar and Survival. I was put off by the author’s strident tone and failure to footnote her references, but I was struck by her hypothesis. We know that light plays a key role in hormone and neurotransmitter regulation. For instance, light increases cortisol which wakes us from sleep. High evening cortisol levels disrupt sleep, increase blood sugar levels and promote fat accumulation. Low winter light levels reduce serotonin production which can lead to seasonal depression. Darkness increases melatonin production which promotes sleep. For most of human history, we had no choice but to eat all we could during summer to build our fat stores for the coming winter famine. Summer foods are naturally higher in carbohydrates than winter foods. Wiley proposes that our physiology has adapted to the cycles of the seasons. The best thing we can do for our health is to sleep more and eat less sugar and high carbohydrate foods during the winter. By doing the opposite, we create a perpetual summer, leading to weight gain, fatigue and eventually disease. She suggests 9 ½ hours of sleep and a lower carbohydrate diet, much like we enjoyed before the advent of the electric light. Regular readers of Food Conscious may have detected a theme: looking back for ways to move forward. Prior to World War II, most of had little choice but to eat in season. The foods available in each season were common knowledge. Nowadays, it’s perpetual summer

in the grocery store. It takes special effort to purchase foods in season and to eat accordingly. Eating the way your ancestors did can also be healthful. Members of the Native American Pima tribe get severely obese when they eat a western diet, but are slim on their native diet of corn and squash. Cabbage was a staple for my ancestors. There is something about cabbage that satisfies me to my core. Then there’s the holiday dessert my family savors most: a nut roll made from nuts, honey and yeasted dough. Known locally as povitica, it’s one tradition that continues in spite of the industrial age.

Dough 1 ½ cups milk 3 well beaten eggs 6 TBSP sugar 1 TBSP salt ½ cup lard 1 cake or package yeast ¼ cup warm water 8 cups flour 1 beaten egg for glaze Add yeast and warm water to a large bowl. Add milk, eggs, sugar, salt and lard. Beat with electric mixer until blended. Add 4 cups flour and beat until smooth. Add remaining flour, mixing with hands until flour is incorporated. Grease dough and let it rest for 30 minutes (put vegetable oil in a bowl and roll dough ball around in it.) Knead dough for about 10 minutes. Let it rise until it doubles in bulk. Make the filling below while the dough rises. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Divide dough into 4 pieces. Roll one piece into a 15 x 15 inch square. Fill with ¼ of the filling mixture. Roll-up like a jelly roll. Tuck in ends. Place on jelly roll pan or cookie sheet. Brush with a beaten egg. Repeat with the three remaining pieces. Bake one hour at 350 degrees. Filling 2 pounds finely ground walnuts or pecans 2 ½ cups sugar 1 stick butter 1 cup hot milk 3 eggs well beaten ½ cup honey ¼ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla

Margaret Freshnock’s Nut Roll This is my mother’s recipe. She started using this one in the early 1960’s because my grandmother’s recipe took too long. How long it took, I don’t know, but you will spend the better part of a day making this one! I have successfully substituted soy milk for cow’s milk and ghee for lard.

Put milk and butter in a small sauce pan and heat until butter melts. Pour over nuts. Add eggs, sugar and vanilla, honey and salt. Mix well. Filling should have the consistency of soft butter. The Gift of Self-Care By Carmelita Beets Aahhh, the holiday season. The good cheer, the family togetherness, the hearts filled with glad tidings, the gifts for our loved ones…and the crowded malls, the overeating, the endless hours of cooking, baking and shopping, the long lines. And more than anything…the stress. During the holidays, the focus is on giving gifts to others, making meals for others, creating memorable celebrations for others; and, in general, making sure that other people have the best possible experience. This year, why not approach the holidays a bit differently by putting your own physical and emotional well being high on the priority list? It’s the best gift you can give to yourself, and by taking care of yourself, you will ultimately have more of the inner calm and peace-of-mind necessary to care for those around you. Self-care is very personal, and only you can determine what will help you feel your best. Don’t leave any of this to chance, though! Make a list (and check it twice!) of at least four or five things that you’d like to do for yourself during the month of December, and schedule them on your calendar. If you don’t write them down and reserve the time, chances are good that your own needs will get pushed aside as you do things for everyone else. Not sure what to put on your self-care list? To get started, sit in a quiet place and close your eyes. Imagine experiencing many different activities and notice how you respond to each one. For example, envision yourself reading in a comfy chair. Picture yourself volunteering at an animal shelter or food pantry. Think about experiencing a massage or other form of healing touch therapy. Imagine that you’re ice skating, taking a bubble bath, getting a manicure, working on a favorite hobby, taking a cooking class, learning yoga, driving to a quaint nearby town you’ve never visited before…or spending a few hours in your PJs, watching old movies. Think about things you know you love to do, things you’ve always wanted to do, and things you have never even thought of doing before! As you imagine yourself in each scenario, you’re likely to linger longer on some of the thoughts. A few of the ideas you think about will bring a bigger smile to your face, or will elicit a big, wishful sigh. It shouldn’t be hard to identify four or five special things you can do for yourself. You may have the lifestyle that gives you unlimited time and resources for self-care activities. Or you may have very little free time and no extra funds.

No matter. Work within the reality of your situation, and don’t dwell on your limitations. If you’d love to have a manicure but can’t spend the money, perhaps you have a friend who will do that for you...and in return, you can help fulfill a special request of her own. Take time each day to remember what the holidays are really all about, and make a decision to bring as much joy as possible into your life. In addition to the gifts of self-care you put on your calendar, there are some things you can do for yourself every day that will make the holidays seem less frenetic. Number one on my list is to take some quiet moments each day to reflect and breathe deeply. Concentrate on completely filling your lungs with air, hold it in for a few seconds, and then blow out through your mouth until every bit of air is out of your lungs. At the same time, push your shoulders down and back. If you can do this exercise for a few minutes, several times a day, you’ll have more energy, and feel more centered and positive. And get out in the fresh air as often as possible, even if it’s just for five minutes. A quick, brisk walk on a cold, sunny day does amazing things for your spirit and outlook on life! ‘Tis also the season of eating and drinking, and a good time to remember that excess sugar weakens the immune system. When tempted by too many sweets, satisfy the cravings with nuts, raisins, dried fruits and fruit juice. You’ll also feel better if you limit alcohol intake and drink more water than usual. Finally, think about the people you spend time with during the holidays. For some, annual gatherings with family members are anticipated with great delight. For others, family get-togethers are unpleasant and difficult. As adults, we can choose the people we want to be with—even on the holidays. Who are the friends and family members who make you feel loved and accepted just as you are? Think about what’s best for you. Take time each day to remember what the holidays are really all about, and make a decision to bring as much joy as possible into your life. That joy will spread to those around you…and I can’t think of a better gift than that! Carmelita Davis-Beets is a natural healer living in Kansas City. Holiday Rituals: Dealing with Change By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. To many people holidays are not voyages of discovery, but a ritual of reassurance. —Phillip Adams What happens when the holidays are not reassuring and change requires that new experience of discovery? What are some of the changes that make holidays hard for people? The first thing that comes to mind is the history of negative experiences during one’s formative years. Some may recall the holidays with great fondness while others will remember the Christmas, Hanukkah or special holiday where a parent’s alcoholism or mental illness overshadowed the event. Another remembers the first holiday after the parent’s divorce. The first family gathering after a death, illness or any loss of a family member can cast a somber pall on a formerly joyous occasion. How can we deal with these changes in a healthy way? Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., in her book “It’s Not the End of the World” talks about developing resilience and change, “The opportunity of change, on the other hand, lies in being ejected from our comfort zone. Like a cave dweller suddenly thrust into the light, it takes a while to adjust. But when we open our eyes and look around with an open mind and a curious heart, a whole new world of possibilities reveals itself.” As you think about your personal situation, you may begin to see what represents a challenge to you and other family members. Perhaps you are dealing with a family member who has just told you that he/she is in a gay relationship. Would the family accept the partner as part of the family? Some gay and lesbian people have gone to their families separately for many years. As the ‘life style’ is being brought to public awareness some may be asking for more from their families. I work with children and parents going through divorce helping them navigate their lives with different environments. Holidays pose a special challenge as both parents and children would like to have the holiday the same. Each parent wants the child and the child/ children would like to be with both parents. New rituals must be made for both the parents and children. The death of a parent, especially if that parent was the matriarch or patriarch of a family that organized family events, creates a big hole for that family. Sibling rivalry may raise its ugly head as family members vie for seniority or recognition within the family. This family must face the task of creating different

holiday rituals. When families are in denial about the change and trauma the temptation is to “cancel the holidays” with no real plans or vision for the new possibilities. Diane Coutou, a writer for the Harvard Business Review analyzed data from studies that investigated resilience in diverse populations. (It’s Not the End of the World) She identified three traits of resilient thinking. These can be the map for healthy thinking that reduces individual and family stress as they plan for the holidays. A resolute acceptance of reality: “Resilient thinkers face difficult situations heads-on. Then they do whatever it takes to survive. How about you? Do you accept your situation realistically: or are you more prone to denial, rationalization or wishful thinking?” A deep belief that life is meaningful: Viktor Frankl in his book Man’s Search for Meaning tells us that the key to resilience is to find positive meaning in traumatic experience. This may be more difficult, but reframing the painful situation into one with meaning could help you and your family members to work through the new challenge with a fresh perspective. An uncanny ability to improvise: Resilient people use their imagination using innovation to create the best possible outcome. Brainstorm as a family about possible ways to reclaim holidays—combining new and old rituals or customs. Create new ceremonies and celebration rituals that everyone can embrace. Change is difficult for the human psyche. We feel more comfortable with the familiar and are often resistant to something different. Holidays, in particular, bring out this idealistic expectation of what should happen. Here’s hoping that you and those you love can find the resilience to face whatever realities are yours, have the courage to find meaning and the imagination to create new, reassuring rituals. Re-Remembering Tradition in Changing Times

By Daniel Baxley In the opening number of the musical Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye, the main character sings about the role of the social classes in his village. Tevye gives voice to how the traditional roles of people like the matchmaker and the rabbi contribute to the village. In the singing of the song the major theme for the show is established. How can the village continue their traditions and keep their society running as the world changes around them? Tradition and its relevance to culture, nature, and self has been a constant matrix for mankind since the dawn of our indigenous cultures. Indigenous cultures around the world have long recognized that the only constant is change. Among our tribal peoples the shamans, medicine people, and teachers are known as masters of change. The shamanic traditions practiced by our indigenous peoples have served as a reminder that utilizes nature and ritual as a buffer for December 2009

change. This knowledge is supportive of such occurrences, so rather than denying or being overwhelmed when these shifts occur they are embraced. The world we live in today is transforming exponentially through the technological explosion of innovation and creativity. An endless stream of information and images perpetually bombards our consciousness. We have evolved into mult-tasking beings within an environment that discourages stillness, reflection, ceremony, yielding, and nature. We live in a society that rewards the ego, the warrior, the corporate mentality, and those that profit from the destruction of the planet’s natural resources. I believe that our survival in the twenty-first century is dependent on our ability, as a people, to become more capable people of handling change. The ways in which we cope, manage, resist or creatively approach the spiraling momentum of change in our lives is the key for re– remembering who we are and why we are here.

Marriage, Birth, Rites of Passage into Adulthood, Special Festivals, Death, and many other transitional times are special times of ceremony within the community.

Today we have the opportunity to renew our selves, our culture, and the natural world. Even though we are in the midst of a never-ending stream of flux, we have within us the ability to stabilize our lives and the earth that nourishes and supports us. When we look to the past and the rituals, ceremonies, games, and festivals of our indigenous cultures around the planet, we can recognize that their traditions are living on. The traditions of our native peoples continue to provide a backdrop of continuity and have served to integrate their societies. It has cushioned them against fragmenting during times of dramatic upheaval. Our indigenous people around the world have faced an endless onslaught of death, destruction, and forced change within their cultures. They have been conquered and subjected to the most grievous crimes against humanity. Yet in the face of all these inequities and the diminishment of their populations they have survived! They have survived because their traditions, ceremonies, and rituals have been practiced, honored, and handed down from one generation to the next. Our indigenous people believe that everything is alive and all should be honored for its contribution to the great cycle of life. Rituals are observed for the sun, the moon, the water, the soil, and the air. The solstices and equinoxes are recognized in ceremony and are connected with the seasons within our own being, as well as the environment. Marriage, Birth, Rites of Passage into Adulthood, Special Festivals, Death, and many other transitional times are special times of ceremony within the community. All within the community are given a voice with decisions and opinions during a council process. A ceremonial talking piece is passed to each member within the circle who then speaks his or her heart uninterrupted. The elders are revered and esteemed as holders of great wisdom and

teachings. They are cared for, nurtured, and loved by all of the community. We, as a people, in a time of unprecedented evolution can learn these lessons from our indigenous relatives. For we are all indigenous people, as we are all children of this earth. Our world has become smaller and we have become a global village with the ability to communicate with our fellow villagers around the world instantaneously. The villagers in Fiddler on the Roof survived by keeping their traditions alive. It is my belief that survival as global villagers is dependent on re–remembering our own indigenous traditions and learning from our native peoples, by bringing earth honoring traditions into our hearts and our everyday experience. We can all find ways to bring ceremony into our lives and our community; we can learn from our indigenous teachers and elders. We can respect the land and our fellow travelers on this earth by walking with peace, brotherhood, and integrity. We can speak our truth clearly and honestly. For we truly are all one. We can be the change we want to be in the world. On a personal level I connect with indigenous traditions in today’s world as a Pachakuti Mesa Carrier, an earth honoring tradition in Peruvian Shamanic Teachings. My mentor don Oscar Miro – Quesada has a saying I feel is very powerful for us today. “Right Action Born of Compassionate Spiritual Wisdom Unites.” It is my belief that practicing traditions that honor our beautiful earth in a heartfelt selfless manner is the wisdom that is required for living peacefully while uniting our global village. Daniel Baxley is a Shamanic Healer and THOTH Endorsed Teacher in the Pachakuti Mesa Tradition. For a session, teaching, or more information contact Daniel at www.shamanicpathways.net, email: rainbowspiritstar@yahoo.com, or call 816-769-7343.

Creating Traditions by Diane Edmiston I wish I could say that I was one of those people who likes holidays and has traditions with my family. But I cannot say that, in all honesty. I don't decorate for holidays, I don't really enjoy society's traditions of candy and cards associated with most holidays and I have not really been interested in creating traditions of my own. When it comes to holidays and traditions, I guess I could say I approach them with a pronounced lethargy. In the past year and a half, traditions and holidays have come up as a topic of conversation when I am conversing with my mentor. She asks me if I am going anywhere for the holidays and I respond with my usual, "Yes, we are going to see our family and do the holiday thing, whatever that is." She tells me that life is all about celebrating. The truth is, each holiday reminds me of a loved one who has crossed over and I just can't care enough to celebrate anything when the entire day reminds me of them. Then my mentor said something that really hit home for me. She said that we can celebrate our loved one’s lives, their spiritual divinity, by doing something celebratory in their name and their honor. She said that with each event I create, each tradition I start, I am, in a sense, inviting them to spend the day with me as I celebrate the fact that they were, and still are, a part of my life.

Grieving, and the Shift of Tradition By Traci Bray A confession: in preparing to write this article, I reviewed my own traditions in regard to the Winter holiday time. Pleasantly having done so, I experienced greater clarity toward creating new traditions. Twenty-two years ago I spent the final Christmas in my then-marriage. My husband had been severely injured on the job the day after that Thanksgiving weekend. He was slowly and painfully recovering, confined to a hospital bed in our living room. That Christmas I went allout in putting up two trees, one in the living room for him, the other in our family room. In two separate celebrations with full meals, his family traveled from around the country for Christmas Eve, with mine taking part the following day. For me the celebrations which involved over forty people lacked joy. The usual holiday tensions existed for both families. For me, on top of supervising a staff of seventy, caring for our home and an infirm spouse, and excessive holiday planning and preparation, I was exhausted. Although, gratefully, he survived the accident, our marriage did not. Since that time, my life-long collection of Christmas ornaments and décor have

Now that was something I could sink my teeth into. To celebrate the eternal, divine love within my father, my grandmothers, my grandfathers, my brother, my unborn child, each loved one who has crossed over—that is a tradition I not only would love to create but would be honored to create for each of them. Perhaps I can volunteer at a children's hospital in honor of my father, as he devoted his life to helping chil-

remained untouched in storage. Emotionally I was paralyzed to repeat tradition. An entire, albeit small closet in my home is where holiday boxes are stored. Writing this article has created an epiphany: clearing out the old will make room for the new! Does this mean that I need to fill up any space created by weeding out the old? Not at all. Energetically, the space for developing new traditions will be met with fresh air! As I sift through the boxes, I will keep the pieces I absolutely love, the accoutrements that I need and will use. As for the items that fall outside of

dren. I could donate to a local food pantry in honor of my grandfather John, as he was a farmer. I could spend some time at the local retirement center around Valentine's day in honor of both of my grandmothers. I could plant a tree or go hiking in honor of my son and my brother. And as I decorate my home and office, I will laugh and cry at the memories I have of them. I will invite my spirit loved ones to spend the day with me, talk with them and wait to hear and see the answers they want to provide. I realize now that I can spend my holidays honoring my loved ones, celebrating their lives and my own and continue their tradition of divine love for me. As a creative being in this world, I can create whatever traditions I choose in order to celebrate the lives of those who touched mine. As you look at your holiday traditions, are there things about them that you want to change? Are there things that you want to eliminate altogether or are there things you want to create and add to that which you are already doing? How do you or can you celebrate the lives of those who touched your life, if even for the briefest moment? How can you carry on the tradition of divine love that your loved ones have left with you, that they continue to carry for you? What can you or do you do to honor their divinity? Let’s make our celebrations honor those who love us. Diane Edmiston, BSE, MAT, LMT, WEH owns Angelic Vibrations in Overland Park and Olathe. and fear. Losses in our current economy may include reduction of income, or loss of job which may include status, position, etc. As related fall-out, relationships end, homes are lost, bankruptcies filed. In my work as a Medium, I am afforded the opportunity of working with grieving people who have lost a loved one. Sometimes the loved one’s death was particularly unpleasant or unexpected. In our current world, cause may be an act of war or terrorism, suicide or other acts of violence. Common death forces traditional shifts, shifts that are not often welcomed, nor embraced. Add-

Since that time, my life-long collection of Christmas ornaments and décor have remained untouched in storage. those categories, there will be boxes and bags waiting for things to give to specific other people, articles to donate, a box for things I realize I might use in another space or place within my home, and a small bag for trash for the few items that are unsafe or broken. Promptly I ordered two small, artificial trees to decorate this year! As with my holiday decorations, the opportunity to create new traditions often runs in tandem with life-changing events, be it a birth, new relationship/ commitment/or marriage, as well as upon the occasion of grief resulting from endings. Creating tradition associated with beginnings most often is associated with pleasant anticipation and eager planning. However, shifting traditions associated with endings frequently are cause for unpleasant anxiousness, dread

ing the insult of circumstances mentioned can thickly layer the pain of these shifts. Above all, continuing traditions that likely are no longer do-able, are too painful or just won’t work offer a clear message: discontinue them. The following are shifts in tradition that I’ve witnessed successful outcomes for those with whom I’ve worked: -Give a gift in memory of a loved one. -Give a gift of time, be it for a special event, or as a commitment for the newyear to come. -Reach-out to others who are missing your loved one—the troops he/she served with, classmates, co-workers. Deliver a message, a gift basket, a poignant note. -Only put up decorations, a tree, display, etc. if it brings you peace, or joy, albeit bittersweet.

-Consider an entirely unique holiday experience such as adding a walk, or games. On a grander scale, perhaps a family outing or trip might be considered, or if preferred, a solitary excursion. -Create a special space or mini altar honoring the person passed. Cherished photographs, a portrait and a candle are frequently found items in such a space. -In regard to meals, consider altering the time, the location and/or the menu. Include a toast to the absent person. -At a family celebration, honor the spirit of the person by having all who wish contribute a special remembrance or item of gratitude. -Journal a conversation with the departed; consider rolling this into a scroll, wrapping it with a beautiful ribbon and placing it on the tree, in a beautiful box, or on the altar. -Write a year-end letter of gratitude to the beloved. If you are a family member or friend of one who is shifting tradition, reach out, offer to assist, reassure. Creating Traditions to Honor the Animals By Pat Hennessy You look outside; a thin blanket of snow covers the ground. Inside, it is warm with the glow of seasonal décor. The holidays are a time that is rich with tradition. As you look around and assess your holiday agenda, have you thought about how your animal companions fit into your seasonal plans? Animals are such an important part of our lives and crucial to the enrichment of our planet. If you are lucky enough to have an animal or two as companions, then you know the abundance of joy and unconditional love they bring. If you don’t happen to have an animal in your home, you still recognize the beauty and importance they have to your immediate surroundings and the Earth as a whole. In the spirit of the holidays and in this time of multicultural customs you can create a new tradition to honor the animals in your life, in your community, or around the planet. When you reflect on your holiday gatherings, take a glance at your current activities. Look for ways you can incorporate your pets. When you are planning your feast, consider making a special dish just for your dog, cat or bird, but leave off the creamy sauces and sugars. A mix of fresh veggies for birds or steamed veggies for your furry companions can be a treat (and deboned turkey trimmings would be a plus). If cooking is not part of your holiday schedule, then you can find a variety of specialty treats to make sure your animal companion gets in on the food fare. There are several high value organic choices, including freeze-dried liver or freeze-dried salmon for dogs and cats. The holiday season is a great time to pick up a variety of unshelled nuts for companion birds (make sure they are not roasted or salted). Many families like to play games when they get together. If the activity is outside, like the Kennedy tradition of family football, get your dog in on the game and use a dog toy for the ball. If the activity is inside, like board games or charades, add in a game that includes the family pet, like “how fast can you teach the dog a new trick” or “where’s the catnip mouse?” After the big meal, take your dog on a long walk. You might even go to a different neighborhood to walk and enjoy the holiday lights. Or if you prefer to drive around looking at lights, take the dog with you. If you are feeling stuffed and would rather not walk, choose a low key activity. Find a quiet place and do a bit of meditation or yoga with your canine or feline friend to relax and unwind. Another option would be to cuddle up with your dog or cat and watch a movie. Make sure you include your animal companion in the gift giving process. Some common traditions include opening a gift early, using a special bag or bow for a certain person, or exchanging names. Now you might December 2009

not put your pet’s name in the exchange jar, but you could certainly give your cat her foil ball the night before while saving the catnip mouse for the family event. You might designate a specific box for your dog’s toy, wrap it in a special paper, and let him tear it open. There are many ways to include your pets in the holiday celebrations. But if you don’t have a furry or feathered family member, you can still create a tradition to honor the animals that live in your community or the many that need our help across the planet. Of course, you can add one of these traditions even if you are lucky enough to share your life with an animal companion:

There are many ways to include your pets in the holiday celebrations. But if you don’t have a furry or feathered family member, you can still create a tradition to honor the animals that live in your community or the many that need our help across the planet.

Give to local animal shelters or animal rescue groups

• •

Volunteer your time

• • •

Recycle newspapers to animal shelters

Make a donation to a national organization (National Wildlife Federation, World Wildlife Fund, Animal Legal Defense Fund, etc.)

Install or refill a bird feeder

Deliver supplies (towels, bleach, office supplies, etc.) Donate money Donate pet food to the local pet food pantry (www.northlandpetpantry.com)

The animals in our lives bring us love and laughter. Being with animals has been known to lower blood pressure and certainly lift spirits. Doing something for the animals in our area or globally can lift our consciousness as a community and as a planet. Create a holiday tradition to honor the animals in your life and the animals of Mother Earth.

spiritual horoscopes

Spiritual Horoscope for December By Aluna Michaels, M.A.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Happy birthday Sagittarius! Even though it’s a busy time with holidays, please make time for meditation and quiet reflection. Focus on gratitude. You’ll gain intuitions about how to increase prosperity and solve financial issues. You might also begin a new relationship, or feel renewed in your current one. It’s easy for you to be spiritual when you need to reach out to the Universe, but continue to connect with your soul, even though things are going well!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You might be feeling disharmony in your home. Bring up the topic of spirituality with your spouse and family. Maybe you could meditate or practice yoga together—or read aloud from an inspirational book each day. Spiritual glue holds you together and softens egos. Solutions will appear when everyone is centered in their soul. If you meet with resistance, continue your own spiritual practices quietly. The others will eventually be drawn to your example.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) If you’re having relationship problems, use meditation to focus on forgiveness. Write down any recurrent negative thoughts you have about others, yourself and the world. It’s time to smash old beliefs so you don’t repeat the same dysfunctional situations. But please forgive the past. It’s the only way to truly clear out the root of negative patterns! You’ll be rewarded with a deep sense of serenity as well as happier connections with others.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) The planet Mercury is retrograde, making for a disorganized holiday season. Let go of perfectionism! Be prepared for chaos and just laugh at when it happens! Try not to solve family issues. Observe dysfunctional patterns, and then meditate on them later to release your irritation and anger. People can be stubborn right now, so let them be how they want to be. Make time for privacy each day and you’ll retain your sanity!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Be aware of old patterns resurfacing in relationships. They can be an unconscious method of holding people at arm’s length. Irritation and impatience surely mean you’re anxious about intimacy. Ask for dreams to give clues for healing. Write any fragments of dreams each morning and meditate daily to allow the entire picture to surface. Being close to another doesn’t mean losing yourself completely! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) This will be a great time to reconnect with old friends, so it’s perfect that it’s the holiday season. You could also get a substantial bonus from work. People love to be around you since your energy is such a blessing to them. However, make sure you continue to nurture yourself with enough relaxation and private time. You won’t be able to enjoy the good times if you’re overextending yourself in order to please others. Draw limits, if necessary, with people who don’t respect your boundaries and need for solitude. Be the guardian of your sacred inner space! Aries (March 21 – April 19) This month will be a lesson in patience! Mercury (communication) and Mars (action) are both retrograde. You’ll be completely frustrated if you push to make things happen. It’s better to meditate and make plans on the spiritual level. Visualize events working out and also ask your intuition for new ways of accomplishing goals. Relax, let life flow and situations will work out better than if you used your will.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Mars is retrograde in your sign. This means you can feel frustrated about future plans. You can also feel angry at yourself for old patterns regarding relationships, self-image, or how you treat your body (food or body image issues). Journal about these patterns and meditate on forgiving yourself. Releasing negativity makes room for changes to happen. In general, try to let go of control and ponder how you’d like things to be different. Take actions in January based on December’s insights.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You could be starting a wonderful new relationship! Please be aware of your tendency for sarcasm and cynicism. They’re your defense mechanisms, but they also keep you from receiving love and experiencing joy! It’s true you’ve had past relationships, and yes, you have flaws—but people find you loveable with your defects and “unsuccessful” romance history. Meditate on self love and positive affirmations. Enjoy these good feelings! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Make space in your budget for self-nurturing. Perhaps you like getting massages, pedicures or buying bath oils. Maybe you can take a gentle yoga class. Pamper yourself in ways that aren’t food related (Cancers can run to food when stressed). When you’re caring for yourself, you’ll find it easier to solve problems about relationships and finances. Even if people seem like they’re picking on you, center yourself with stress-reduction techniques (even deep breathing will work) and situations won’t look as difficult!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Your family is going to drive you crazy, so release your Libran fantasy of holiday bliss! Bolster yourself with affirmations, even if it means retreating to the restroom for deep breaths and chanting your positive statements quietly to yourself in the mirror! Meditate on ways to keep emotional boundaries without losing your temper. Watch your eating choices, since you can work out unspoken aggression with food. Victory will be in keeping your spiritual balance, rather than making family understand you.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Be careful of getting into gossip or arguments at work. Stay focused on your tasks and let the dust settle until January. Also be aware of sending judgmental glances and of seething quietly in the corner. Exercise and deep breathing will help you cover up your irritations. Treat yourself to an indulgent present as a reward for good behavior! Meditate on forgiving people in power who don’t wield their power wisely. What’s Being Said I picked up a copy (Sept 2009) of Evolving at Border's Bookstore on I-29 and Barry Rd. And I just had to drop you a note and tell you thank you so much for this great magazine and the fact that it was free is amazing! There are several businesses featured in the magazine that are on my radar now to go to, so I hope they continue to support you and this great read! And again, thanks for the magazine. Great work ! Tammy Ferguson Shepherd Wow!!!! What creative geniuses you are. I love the ad and Connie I so appreciate the word-smithing with putting my ad/event information together at the 11th hour. Your enthusiasm, giving 120 percent and genuine caring is evident and has blessed me in ways unimaginable. I was astounded and ever so grateful for the effort and time you took in pulling together numerous bits of information from going online to InterPlay and the info I sent. It touched my heart when you acknowledged other energy work that I do that I have kept under covers and put it out for me on the ad without my prompting. Amazing. Above and beyond, your talents and your sincerity and your loving heart are very evident. Words cannot say thanks enough. Devi Wetterer
