Dear Friend, I believe traditions, like life, are cyclical. With the passage of time and the transition of generations, traditions change. And sometimes they’re abandoned, forgetting the warmth, comfort and familiarity that comes from established tradition.

When I was a child, traditions were relished rituals in which I participated. I remember as a child going ‘hunting’ on Christmas day with my dad, uncle and cousins. I was the only girl—and was very proud, even if the only things we shot at were pop cans. It was the hiking through the woods, camaraderie and feeling of being a tribe that meant so much to me. When I was older there was sledding at the park and Volksmarches with Grandpa. Sister Mary, then in the military, created custom cadences for us to chant. Then when I established my own family I started new traditions as well as incorporated cherished ones from my and the children’s father’s past. Then the kids grew up and moved out. Somewhere along the way I forgot to start new traditions. New ones that invite elders, grown children as well as grandchildren into the circle of love.

Holiday Compassion Fatigue...10 The Truth Tradition Trip...11 Overcoming Holiday Stress...12

Now I have the opportunity to remember favorite rituals of youth as well as create new ones, based on current needs and values. The articles in this issue focus on creating traditions and reclaiming past ones. Our writers offer an array of advice on the importance of ritual as well as ways to remember past traditions and incorporate new. May you and your loved ones experience a renewed zest for this special time of year. I wish you the most blessed of holidays.

Traditional Holiday Breads Return to Stores This Season Farm to Market Bread Co. Stollen and Panettone Hit Shelves For over a decade, Farm to Market Bread Co. has brought a taste of holiday spirit to Kansas City with its traditional German stollen and Italian panettone breads. These once-a-year specialty loaves are based on traditional recipes and will be available in stores, November 22 – December 31, 2013. “These breads are made using age old recipes,” said John Friend, president of operations. “We prepare these breads over two days with 18 hours of fermentation to produce the right consistency for these delicate and special breads.” The German-style stollen bread offers a balance of sweet flavors and rich ingredients with almonds and rum soaked raisins, all basted with butter and dusted with a coating of all-natural powdered sugar. Stollen dates back to the Saxon Royal Court in 1427, but the holiday bread did not gain popularity until Pope Innocent VIII allowed the use of butter without paying a fine. Farm to Market Bread’s

version is based on an old-world approach, weighing in at nearly 1 lb per loaf. The rich loaves can be enjoyed on their own or topped with cinnamon and butter for a sweet treat. Another holiday Farm to Market Bread. favorite is the panettone. The classic Italian holiday bread dates to the 15th century, but is baked fresh today in Kansas City. The specialty panettone combines buttery, lightly sweetened, egg-enriched dough that is studded with dried cranberries, candid orange and topped with the distinctive cupola with toasted almonds. Farm to Market’s panettone can be enjoyed on its own or for a sweet take on French toast. Because the breads take time and aging, the baking process at Farm to Market Bread Co. begins in late October. Containing no preservatives, the breads are so sought after that they are shipped all over the country. For more information on Farm to Market Bread, www.farmtomarketbread.com. Darkness into Light Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark. —Rabindranath Tagore

T

he Winter Solstice is approaching. Day light is decreasing and darkness envelops us in the early evening. The chill is in the air and dark brown leaves are clinging desperately to the trees. The body resists change with fatigue, flu and colds as fall gives way to winter. At this season of celebrating light, many of us are drawn into our experiences of loss. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross tells us, “Dying is an integral part of life, as natural and predictable as being born. But whereas birth is cause for celebration, death has become a dreaded and unspeakable issue to be avoided by every means possible in our modern society.” How can we look at the different kinds of deaths as possibilities for finding light in darkness? We may begin by asking the deeper questions of life, the meaning of this event in our lives and the implications for our future. Paying more attention to the moment, the surrounding environment of people, animals, nature and the mysterious world of dreams and imagery can help us find answers. I am reminded of a beautiful movie with Hume Cronyn, To Dance With The White Dog. A man, married for over fifty years, loses his wife in death. He is overcome with grief and isolates himself. A white dog mysteriously appears, comforting him and helping him through his sadness and grief. As he comes to life again, connecting with family and friends, the dog leaves as quietly as she came. I usually ask people to pay attention to nature, to animals that may come into their lives, dreams that may speak to them of the person who has gone or may

give clues to the questions that they are asking. Many people have described dreams that are more vision — like in which the person tells them in direct or metaphoric ways that they are with them and are all right. This can offer closure for someone who is wondering about the well being and existence of the person who has died. Dreams, in symbol, offer solutions to problems we are experiencing. There are other wonderful stories of the journey of grief and loss; from darkness to light; from questioning to peace. Two of my favorites are children’s stories that are as helpful for adults as they may be for children. The Secret Garden (book and film) by Frances Hodgkin Burnett and The Never Ending Story (film) both tell the stories of children who have lost parents. As we go into the darkness of the winter solstice, we can learn to celebrate light. I challenge you to face any grief, loss, change you have experienced or are experiencing, take the journey to healing, face the difficulties and find a greater depth and peace for yourself as you embrace the light springing from the darkness of death. Then we can celebrate the season of ‘light’ with new meaning and great hope.

Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes Love Romance? New Traditions Await

I

Karen Harrison, Ed.S.

’m in love with a “romantic” and this mirrors my soul in glorious ways. For Christmas last year he indulged me with the “real deal” perfume, two dozen red roses, a gift of gold jewelry, a gift certificate for massage, a luxurious satin night gown, and a stuffed bear. Still, lots of romantics pair up with those who are not. Some folks know little of how to keep the mystery and intrigue, or “devotion and ardor” in their relationship. Writing for a KC magazine years ago, my editor assigned me a Valentine’s article when I interviewed famous Kansas Citians of their favorite romantic gifts or gestures. Here are a few of their suggestions: • Roses for the ladies open the fast-lane of romance. Buy the guys something wonderful to eat or make something yum. I often bring home pistachios as most everyone enjoys them. • Buy luxurious 1000 thread count sheets. If they have not touched your skin you are in for a treat! • Tape love notes or a good joke or thinking-of-you notes to your mate’s car dash board or home computer screen and/or the bathroom mirror. • Play an “ocean wave” CD, make pina coladas, wear a Hawaiian shirt while a Hawaiian meal simmers on the stove. Enjoy the feeling of the south pacific in your living room in the middle of winter. • Write a love poem even if it feels silly! • Use real candles (no batteries which I call the oxymoron candles) on the din-

ner table & light them each night during the holidays. Hire your over-worked wife or husband a “housekeeping” gift certificate and if you already have one; give instead a gift certificate for a massage or pedicure. Buy one another foods the other loves but you do not enjoy. For example, one year I made up a “gourmet” basket of anchovies, oysters, BBQ sauces, real cola and other foods or snacks which would never cross my lips. If you have young ones, send them to Grandma’s for the night. Available in local stores are splendid organic wines. Our favorite is from Badger Mountain in a dark blue bottle.

Holiday romance is in the air but it does begin in our hearts and imagination. If you are single, buy yourself a massage or pedicure and treat yourself with great “devotion” and love. Holistic Health—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Lessons from Carmelita

I

would like to share my experiences from 2008 when I spent most saturday mornings, for five hours at the Institute for Natural Healing in Kansas City, Missouri. Our amazing teacher, nutritionist and owner of the Institute was Carmelita Davis Beets. Along with forty classmates, we studied diligently to become Holistic Nutrition Consultants. This was a experience that was life changing for many of us. To be successful in your life and career, there are several areas that Carmelita addressed in her weekly sessions. The areas included: 1. Communication, 2. Barriers to success 3. Words of wisdom and 4. Questions to ask yourself. 5. Affirmations. First of all, be fluent in your ability to communicate with clients and allow your feelings to be seen by other people. Be sensitive, warm and aware. Remember to use your intuition; communicate from your soul. Calm down in your demeanor and let worrisome thoughts go. Have a good environment for work with quiet music, good lighting and a good chair. A good rule of thumb is to listen more and talk less. Determine what image you wish to show to the world. Watch how you present yourself in attitude, dress, eye contact and posture as these all communicate who you are and help to build trust. Tactfully present the truth and ask for feedback from your clients. Second of all, assess barriers to success to determine where improvements can be made. This process can be seen as a gradual, awakening journey. Get rid of clutter and debris in your environment as well as within yourself. Get rid of or let go of victim mentality, closed mindedness, rigidity, a closed heart, overblown ego, insecurities, insensitivity, anger and resentment. This can be accomplished through educating yourself, meditation, discussing with a friend, pastor or therapist. Learn to be empathetic, not sympathetic, develop good boundaries and accentuate the positive. Realize all misfortunes are good as they are overcoming lessons that will go away when you go through it. Third of all, her words of wisdom are far reaching. Surround yourself with like minded people. A career grows out of who you are; we don’t grow out of a career. Remember that you are what you think about, so make any necessary changes in your life. Find an alternate way to view the project that you find loathsome. Change the way you view or think so you can get the job done. Do the thing you

dislike the most, first, then relax and have a ball. Set goals and intentions regularly. Set goals that you can measure or quantify and reset goals as needed. Never forget that you have a gift to give and a dream to live. Holistic nutrition is what you are meant to share with the world. Feel the fear and do it anyway, give it over to God. Fear can also be called false expectations appearing real!! Affirmations help you go through fear. Have a positive attitude and believe in what you do! Carmelita recommends to ask yourself the following four questions: • What is the area in your life that I need to change for your success? • What is your attitude or fears about being successful? • What are the benefits of not resolving your barriers to success? • What would you have to give up to resolve your barriers to success? These are the affirmations I made for my life based on principles set out by Carmelita. • My life and career is full of joy. I have freedom to express my view and share and exchange knowledge with many wonderful people. • I attract optimistic, uplifting and thought-provoking people in my life, despite illness or health challenges in their lives. • Educating, nurturing and supporting the mind, body and spirits of people I meet is rewarding, heart-felt and boosts my overall well-being. • I bring love and light into my life by giving and receiving and exchanging thoughts, ideas, alternatives, possibilities and solutions for myself, my family and my community. Food First!—by Bethany Klug, D.O.

In the Kitchen with Bonnie—by Bonnie Rabicoff

Bless this Food!

Justus Drugstore Restaurant

I

t’s the time of year when friends and family will celebrate the season by enjoying a meal together. I like to express gratitude for the meal I am about to enjoy. I may simply bring my palms together and bow or I may offer a prayer. A meal blessing does several things. It expresses gratitude, sets an intention and calls for support. When shared with a group of people it unites them as friends, family or community. Here’s a blessing I recite often with these qualities: This food is the gift of the whole universe, the earth, the sky and much hard work. May we live in mindfulness as to be worthy to receive it. May this food help us transform our unskillful states of mind and learn to eat in moderation. May this food nourish us and prevent illness. May we accept this food to realize the path of understanding and love. If you remember gratitude, intention, support and unity, you can create your own blessings, or feel less awkward when asked to offer one. Gone are the days of surviving on the food you grow, gather or hunt. Foods once available only for a few weeks of the year are now available year round. We are no longer responsible for the production of our own food and are less connected to it. It’s easy to take it for granted. We’re dealing with some hefty problems in our communities and our world. The simplest solutions are often the most difficult to see and one of the simplest may be what we choose to eat. With this in mind, I offer these words to contemplate as you shop, cook and feast this holiday season. The Three Awarenesses of Food 1. Aware that this food is a gift, the work of many hands past and present and the wisdom and experience of the earth over billions of years, I aspire to eat this food with awareness, so I may deeply touch the miracle of it. 2. Aware that this food shapes my body substance and the way I relate to myself and the world, I aspire to eat only foods that nourish me in the amounts I need, no more, no less. 3. Aware that food can be raised in ways that minimize harm to the planet and its inhabitants, I aspire to choose my food carefully so that everyone and everything may experience the health and wholeness I seek for myself. he pork used in this signature dish is a heritage meat product. Heritage breed pigs come from bloodlines going back hundreds of years when livestock was raised on multi-use, open-pasture farms. Because of their lifestyle and inherent genes, different breeds became known for a variety of characteristics...including the rich and hearty taste of their meat, distinct marbling, bacon flavors and creamy fat. Today, these breeds still carry excellent qualities, but many are not suited for commercial farming practices. As a result, they are in danger of being lost forever. Feature—by Sharon McGloin Holiday Compassion Fatigue

T

he holidays are upon us and with them they bring family, friends, parties, work. For some of us, the holidays are filled with joy and wonderful memories of our childhood experiences. For others, the holidays are a time of stress, particularly if you are a caregiver in the world or in your family. As a caregiver, chances are you are exposed to vicarious trauma or secondary trauma simply due to the fact that you are a caregiver. Daily exposure can result in what is known as compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue, otherwise known as secondary trauma, is defined as work or life-related, secondary exposure to extremely stressful events. You may repeatedly hear stories about the traumatic things that happen to other people, commonly called vicarious trauma. If you are exposed to others’ traumatic events as a result of your work or life, this is secondary exposure. When you combine this daily exposure with the general stress of the holidays, your chances for compassion fatigue increase dramatically. What can we do to offset the exposure to secondary trauma and at the same time, have a more relaxing holiday season? Tips: • Don’t go it alone — surround yourself with the people that love you and accept you and will support you during these times of stress. • Listen and share your concerns of and with colleagues and friends. Find at least one person to connect with and set aside time to visit, talk and destress. • Conduct periodic self assessments. Stand in front of the mirror and do a body scan. Check out how you are feeling, any aches and pains, itch or twitch. Tune in and pay attention if something is off kilter. • Do something nice for yourself. Schedule a massage, facial, body scrub or manicure/pedicure. Do some self care. • Reduce isolation by maintaining regular supervision and network with colleagues. If you are exposed to vicarious trauma in the workplace, have a set time for supervision and meet with your colleagues on a regular basis to help release toxic exposure. • Take needed “mental health days” and use stress reduction techniques • Arrange for reassignment at work. • Seek professional help if needed. Physical Strategies: • Get plenty of exercise. • Try progressive relaxation: tense and relax the major muscles of the body. • Breathe deeply. • Eat a balanced diet and do not skip more than one meal a day. • Do something for someone else. Emotional Strategies:

• Establish a support system. • Take a break and remove yourself from a highly emotionally charged situation temporarily. • Practice the art of laughter at self and your problems. • Be direct about your needs and rights without blaming or threatening or infringing on the rights of others. • Be comfortable with discussing/ describing a variation of feelings (sad, glad, mad, scared).

Mental Strategies: • Change your Mind. Let the mind be diverted by different thoughts. • Re-label — Practice the art of seeing a promise in every problem. • Whispering — Encourage the art of giving yourself positive messages when things are going wrong. • Imagination — Close your eyes and use guided fantasy or visual imagery to help calm yourself. • Let Go — Why hold on to pain, anxiety or frustration, fear or anger? You can’t control anything or anyone except yourself. • Time Management — Reorganize yourself. • Make a PLAN and make it work. • Use positive self talk. Every day we are exposed to variety of situations that create stress. Here is a simple acronym to help you deal with the events in your life. E + R = O. Events plus response equals outcome. Throughout all the events of our daily lives, our response is what will determine the outcome. Take a moment to repeat this in your head instead of making a quick stress response that may lead to events that create even more stress. Here's to a stress free holiday season. Happy Holidays! Feature—by Stephanie Forcier The Truth Tradition Trip

H

ere we are once again; it is that time of year. On one hand, the energy of hustle and bustle in its various forms permeates our environment. On the other hand, perhaps a calmness and relaxation surrounds us as one year transitions into the next. Whatever this time of year holds for you, one tradition that you may choose to commit to is the tradition of truth. However, be prepared as you accept this tradition challenge. While it is explained from a holiday perspective – this trip lasts 365 days a year for the rest of your life! It is a permanent vacation from expectation! Amidst holiday activity, how often do you think or hear that we have lost focus on the meaning? Or, with all of the shopping and stress and planning, we have lost sight of what is important? I have heard people say this many times. And, what is important encompasses more than the traditional religious reference; what is important is truth. Truth is about living our lives with open hearts, sharing compassion and being in service to our highest good and the highest good of everyone connected to us. Why are we not asking ourselves this every day of the year? Doesn’t every day have meaning? Are we taking the opportunity to check ourselves each day and ensure we are living from our place of truth? Should you be willing to live from this place, your Truth Tradition Trip, your unique vacation begins now. There is no need to wait for an occasion, holiday or for anyone else to remind you. This tradition is about your journey and what brings you joy. It is also about freeing yourself from expectation, judgment and outdated patterns. Knowing your truth is the first leg of the trip. This involves a willingness to be honest with yourself about what you like, love and enjoy, as well as what you dislike and that which brings you discomfort. The “knowing” of truth is the gut instinct, the intuition, or the compass that points us toward or repels us from people, places and things. On our trip, the universe will present to us many opportunities to fine tune the knowing of our truth. Some people know right away what their truth is, and for others, it may be helpful to meditate, pray or have a walk out in nature. Do you really want to go to that 3rd holiday gathering? Why do you want to go or not go? Do you want to eat that turkey or ham? Why or why not? Give yourself permission and space to become clear on what you know to be true for you. Honoring your truth is the second leg of the trip. If it doesn’t feel right to go to that holiday event, how can you honor your truth, while also honoring the invitation? Honoring your truth includes believing in win-win

of it. Fear and ego would have you believe that speaking your truth creates separation and it is not safe to do so. Love would have you believe that there is room in the world for your truth, that truth connects you; and, that you are safe to speak your truth. Sometimes we overcomplicate the speaking of our truth to make others feel better about us declining their invite. Other times we might even lie so as not to rock the boat. Or, we might even internalize speaking our truth for so long that one day we let it burst out in a hurtful way. Keep it loving, simple, and honest. Speak your truth from your heart. Living your truth is the highlight of the trip and includes knowing, honoring, and speaking your truth. This is the feeling you have when everything is falling into place. It is when abundance is flowing freely into your life. It is the place where your manifestation potential is at its highest. It is the space from which you energetically give to those you love and to community. The holiday season is a great time to initiate your Truth Tradition Trip as it presents many opportunities. If you are hosting that holiday gathering or just a guest, trust that all will be well. It will start when it starts. It will end when it ends. Whoever is supposed to be there will be there. Whoever is not supposed to be there, will not be. And remember, you don’t have to wait to live your truth. Start your vacation from expectation and begin your Truth Tradition Trip today!

Honoring your truth is the second leg of the trip. If it doesn’t feel right to go to that holiday event, how can you honor your truth, while also honoring the invitation? scenarios. Win-win scenarios result when the importance of being in service to your own highest good is held equal to that of the real or perceived highest good of others. This is where the truth tradition may butt up to other traditions, especially traditions that are founded on expectation or traditions to which you have attached expectation. Honoring your truth means that your decision to do or not do something comes from a place of love, joy and authentic self-care. If you find yourself doing something because you’ll feel guilty otherwise, or that someone else will judge or condemn you, then you are not honoring your truth. Speaking your truth is the third leg of the trip. This is the part of the trip that feels less like a vacation for most people. Many will know their truth, but never speak of it. Speaking your truth reinforces the honoring

Feature—by Kelly Murphy Boule Overcoming Holiday Stress

T

is the season when many folks begin to feel restless and anxious. Thanksgiving has passed, leaves have fallen and it’s dark at 5:30pm. Dread begins to set in as one begins to think about coping with cold weather, increased hours of darkness, family functions (for many this equals tension), parties, holiday shopping and much more. For many, the holidays have become more of an event as opposed to honoring the spirit of what the holidays actually mean. Is it possible to get through them and experience true inner peace? Absolutely!

I remember growing up and feeling so connected with what the holidays were all about. They were about being with those we loved, embracing the beauty that mother nature intended for us by appreciating snow-covered trees and the transformation of death to rebirth in nature, getting in touch with our creative sides by making homemade holiday décor and gifts, doing something for people in need and so much more. Over the years, however, I began to lose touch with the spirit of why we celebrate the holidays. Sometimes we get so caught up in “what our duties are,” that we lose sight of the intention behind it. In recent years, I have enjoyed reconnecting with this special time and it has allowed me to embrace that childlike feeling of joy and gratitude that came to me so naturally when I was young. I have realized that it’s this very connection that has helped not only me, but also the clients I see, to beat the holiday blues. I believe the best way to beat the holiday blues is to tend to the mind, body and spirit. Each October, I reflect on what my professional and personal goals are for the upcoming months and the New Year. Once I have established what those are, I base my holiday activities and commitments around what is doable and realistic based upon where I’m at in my life and what my goals are. This includes taking my family into consideration. I then pick those activities that will help keep me balanced in mind, body and spirit as well as feed my love for celebrating the holidays. I help my clients work under this paradigm too and it really can make a tremendous difference. Here are some tips that will be nourishing to you and also help ignite the holiday spirit regardless of how busy you are:

Friends: Set up lunch or dinner dates with friends and loved ones in advance (in October) so you can be sure to see your friends; plus, spread out your schedule so you aren’t rushed trying to fit people in at the last minute.

Meditation: Meditating, even just 10 minutes each day, helps me immensely through the holidays and in life overall. All you have to do is close your eyes, focus on your breath or a very specific word that brings you peace. Each time you feel yourself getting distracted, know that it’s just the process and go back to your focus. Too many people beat themselves up for getting distracted and then give up. It’s like any other muscle that you build so it takes time. You will feel so much more focused and peaceful as you develop this gift. Immerse yourself in funny comedies. I love all of the traditional holiday comedies and there are always great comedies that come out in the theaters in November and December. Laughing is a great way to reduce stress.

Spiritual Nutrition: •

If you are too busy to decorate for the holidays this year, then do less in the home and put your focus toward connecting with the Spirit of the Holidays outside. Build a fire in a pit in your back yard and cook some delicious food and enjoy being in nature. It’s a great way to connect back with your inner child.

If you’re looking for creative gift ideas on a tight budget, make some homemade gifts. It will bring so much meaning to you and the recipient. Last year I enjoyed making my family almond butter, facial scrubs and photo collages on their coffee mugs.

Keep a gratitude journal. This is a great way to stay centered on what matters and let go of what doesn’t.

Keep the traditions that are truly fulfilling to you and allow yourself to let go of what is not. We often over-pressurize ourselves to maintain routines of the past even though there may be things that we have outgrown in that they don’t hold the meaning that they once did. Take a close look at what your traditions are, which ones matter and which ones you might let go. Be true to yourself and Spirit!

Release any guilt that you may feel about not doing enough or spending enough for the holidays to keep up with the status quo. Guilt is the most damaging emotion to experience on the spiritual level.

Listen to your favorite music while doing daily household activities or when in your car. Music has a great way of taking us out of too much thinking mode and putting us back into our heart and soul.

Body Nutrition: •

Exercise and be active, even 25 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Exercise is key to stress management. Drink water. Mild dehydration can cause irritability, fatigue, muscle aches and more. It’s easier to be conscious of our thirst in the summer and warmer months but we often put our water intake on the back burner in the cooler months. By the time you feel thirsty you can often be dehydrated. Try to drink at least 8 glasses a day.

If you are not currently taking Vitamin D3, I highly recommend you do so. Low levels of vitamin D cause a myriad of problems in the body and mind…the most frequent is depression.

Replace unhealthy sugar snacks and other holiday treats with a natural sugar like honey, maple syrup or Xylitol (a natural sweetener). Sugar causes depression, anxiety, weight problems, fatigue, mood swings, cravings for more sugar and much more.

Try to eat at least one salad per day. Green leafy vegetables help in the winter by uplifting our moods, packing us with much needed nutrients and helping us to fight sugar cravings.

Mind Nutrition: •

Realism: Be realistic when planning activities and making commitments. The most frequent occurrence I see with clients is over committing.

We often have an idealistic image of what the holidays should be; but, the reality is that we are all human and our lives are always changing. Be true to yourself, take care of yourself and love yourself. Please have a greater sense of peace and joy during this special time of year…you can overcome the holiday stress.

December 2013

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels December 2013 Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Happy birthday Sagittarius! Venus retrogrades this month, helping you to resolve problematic financial habits, as well as self-worth issues. Meditate on your self-perception . . . and how that level of personal value affects your spending habits (being careless or undisciplined leading to debt?) . . . and also how it affects the quality of your relationships. Look within with courage and many breakthroughs will occur!! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Venus is retrograding in your sign, which is very rare! Take these next two months to meditate on all your past relationships and your current one, if partnered (especially way’s happened over the past eight years). Forgive yourself for recurring patterns, so you can allow the pattern to heal. Continued shame and selfrecrimination just empowers the negative. Claim your right to be fully loved – by yourself and by all others you bond with! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Meditation will give flashes of insight about how your thinking affects your perception of past relationships. Ponder your romantic bonds from the past eight years (length of the Venus retrograde cycle). Reframe experiences as lessons learned, and karma completed – rather than as bitter memories and self-condemnation. Release the old perceptions, and more joy will flood in! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You’ll have many financial breakthroughs, and maybe even exciting new money-making opportunities! Also try reaching out to old friends and reconnecting. Get back to doing fun hobbies or activities that you love. Mid-month, stay centered when faced with frustrating communication. Things will clarify and become smooth again, working in your

favor, so don’t waste energy being worried or miffed! Aries (March 21 – April 19) Uranus, the planet of change and liberation, moves direct in your sign. Expect an inner revolution! Your consciousness can expand suddenly, giving you a new self-perception, a different “vibration” and positively affect your relationships. You will be freed from subconscious patterns that have kept you in difficult work situations, too. Meditate and release the past eight years (or more!) of challenges in matters of the heart or career – and be open to brand new circumstances! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Your dreams and meditations are filled with many revelations and insights, so pay attention! Write them down and take action on the inner guidance. This is especially strong mid-month. In your spiritual life, ponder how you’ve grown over the past eight years (a Venus retrograde cycle). Be OK with shifting your approach to spirituality, whether it be changing yoga teachers, exploring a different religion or trying a new style of meditation. Enjoy change and don’t fear it, Taurus! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) New avenues of relationships, activities and connections are opening suddenly! You’ll feel more inspired and excited about life! As your heart and mind open, meditate on old dis-

appointments that could inhibit you ability to receive love and joy. Let go of these pains, and affirm that you have successfully completed karma – and you deserve rewards for the pain you’ve been through! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Exciting shifts can happen at work! Maybe a great new job offer? Or maybe a wonderful supervisor or colleague comes aboard who you really click with. In relationships, meditate on ways you block partnership. It could be a sense of criticism – or maybe being overly needy? Use December and January to examine these types of hidden emotional patterns. Free yourself of your own limiting thoughts! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Look forward to exciting changes with your spiritual life! Meditation can be filled with incredible visions or insights. Try out new yoga or tai chi classes. Research a different form of religion. Maybe attend a spiritual workshop or travel to an exotic place! Let a sense of newness spark a fire in you! Health wise, look at eating habits that deplete your energy and meditate on the courage to release those foods or substances!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) This month offers energy to help relationships! Venus, your ruling planet – and the planet of love and fulfillment, retrogrades. It gives you chances to heal the roots of all sorts of dysfunctional issues from family and deep emotional wounds. Revolutionary shifts of consciousness can occur if you do the preparatory work. Allow insights to surface; forgive all the “junk” of the past eight years (or beyond!); believe there is more to your soul story than what you already know! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Eek gads! You are so mean to yourself! Use this month to practice kind affirmations about wonderful YOU during your meditation time. Also observe how you can drive yourself with too many activities. Schedule time for relaxation and stress relief – even becoming aware of your breath while wait at a red light will help! You are so much more awesome than you let yourself think that you are!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) The Universe is urging you to heal dysfunctional relationship patterns and issues of trust. Meditate and journal about past hurts, disappointments and heartbreaks. Release these experiences so they don’t poison your future! A new partner is coming, or a current relationship can be renewed – but only if you’re willing to be openhearted and hopeful. Also let go of self-criticism and obsessive evaluation. Don’t dwell or punish yourself about your part in things – just note events and surrender them to the Universe.
