Complementary and Alternative Medicine (partial list)

Dear Friend, Complementary and alternative medicine provide options; a way to go back to the original source of healing, the path that was traveled before the invention of scientific medicine. Although termed “alternative” now, these sometimes-considered-hoodoo methods were established and practiced from the earliest of recorded history. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) classifies complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) into five major groups including whole medical systems, mind-body medicine, biologically-based practice, manipulative and body-based practices and energy medicine (see sidebar for list). The most common usages of CAM are consumption of non-vitamin, non-mineral natural products. Use of

• • • • •

Those using CAM are varied, but according to NCCAM, use of CAM is highest among women and those with higher levels of income and education. In the United States, approximately 38 percent of adults (about 4 in 10) and approximately 12 percent of children (about 1 in 9) are using some form of CAM. Local practitioners tell me that more frequently, physicians of patients with chronic issues are referring them to alternative practitioners. Many times CAM are used in conjunction with mainstream medicine to enhance healing. The articles and advertisers in this issue share information about some of the healing methods available in our area.

Study Shows Stress Reduction from Massage WellSpring | MTTI Study Finds that Massage Increases Wellbeing in Kansas City Police Officers Kansas City police officers are stressed. Most sit for hours in a police car, only to be jolted by an emergency and expected to act quickly. Faced with a number of these difficult situations each day, it’s no wonder that the rate of depression, suicide and divorce in police officers is higher than the normal population. Additionally, police officers aren’t always recognized for their hard work in the community. WellSpring | MTTI wanted to change that. “The positive effect of massage in the normal population and among people with different health conditions is well documented,” says Jennipher Walters, WellSpring marketing director. “However, police officers have not been studied in public research when it comes to massage therapy. We wanted to give back to these officers and study how massage effected their profession and lives.” Thus the four-week study was born. Last fall, WellSpring recruited four Kansas City, MO, police officers from high-stress patrol units. Two of the four had never received massage. Each officer came in once a week for four weeks for a complimentary 50-minute massage that was given by a WellSpring student at the top of his/her class in technique work. Before each massage, the officers completed a three -page survey that measured wellness, stress levels and happiness through ranking questions and four open-ended questions. The results, despite the small sample size, were striking. When looking at average change from the first massage to the final massage, these results were found: • 11% had an increased general sense of wellbeing • Stress levels decreased 8%

• 17% felt more rested when they woke up in the morning • 60% had fewer incidence of headaches • 22% had an increase in the ability to concentrate well • 71% had a decrease in feeling fatigued • 100% of subjects noted feeling more relaxed in their open-ended answers. For more about MTTI-WellSpring, please call 816-523-9140 for information about the Kansas City campus at 9140 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, or 785-856-3903 for information regarding the Lawrence campus at 947 New Hampshire. IN DIVINE REPOSE By Paul Goldman She came to me late this evening, in divine repose, her familiar face aglisten. I began to speak— her full lips hushed mine. I could not help but lose my way in the depth of her eyes, knew without a doubt she and I had been swept away together more than once. Her scent, the taste of her in the air, my breath stopped as I could feel the blood rush in and out of my heart; how she had arrived here again at this time, mystery! We communicated between thoughts as each moment merged deeper and deeper within—eyes, hearts, hands, minds locked in syncopated movement, mutual lifelines tautened at once, seconds stood on end motionless as we danced in the spaces between time. Wholly surrendered to her essence, essential as my own breath, I avowed to remain here ripe in the midst of her divine repose— until time itself dissolves, and I know nothing else at depth, but her…

The Fifth Agreement A New York Times bestseller for over seven years, The Four Agreements transformed the lives of millions of people around the world with its simple yet profound message. Now author and renowned spiritual teacher don Miguel Ruiz has collaborated with his son, don Jose Ruiz, on its long-awaited sequel, The Fifth Agreement: A Practical Guide to Self Mastery (Amber-Allen Publishing / $19.95). This captivating book expands upon The Four Agreements with fresh insights and empowers us to recover our faith and authenticity with a powerful new agreement: Be skeptical, but learn to listen. The fifth agreement uses doubt as a tool to discern the truth. Doubt takes us behind the words we hear to the underlying real message or intent. By being skeptical, we don’t believe every message we hear, and when we don’t put our faith in lies, we quickly move beyond emotional drama and the feeling of victimization. According to the Ruizes, The Fifth Agreement prepares us to return to our innate wisdom and live our lives based on truth. The truth leads to self-mastery,

to a life that’s very easy; believing in lies leads to needless conflict and human suffering. “Many years ago, I began to teach the fifth agreement, but then I discovered that no one was ready to learn the advanced Toltec teachings that underlie this agreement. The Four Agreements were enough of a challenge at the time,” don Miguel Ruiz explains. “The fifth agreement is ultimately about seeing our whole reality through the eyes of truth. The result of practicing this agreement is the complete acceptance of ourselves just the way we are, and the complete acceptance of everybody else just the way they are. The reward is our eternal happiness,” don Jose Ruiz says. Now, in this compelling new book we are reminded to commune with our divine nature, enabling us to create a life of personal freedom and ease. The Fifth Agreement is available at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, or at bookstores everywhere. For more information please visit miguelruiz.com.

THE FIVE AGREEMENTS BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST Your best is going to change from mo-

Winter Tummy Warmers By Bethany Klug, DO After being assured that an infected ear was not the cause of his daughter’s fever, our conversation turned. His girls weren’t eating their serving of fruit at breakfast, usually a kiwi or a small apple. “Summer is over. Perhaps the fruit isn’t so good. Do they need a supplement until fruit comes back in season?” he asked. “Maybe,” I replied, “but consider this. Most fruits have a cooling effect on the body. With winter coming on, their inner wisdom may be telling them to eat more warming foods.” Here’s how I advised him. Certain fruits have a warming effect on the body; however even cooling foods can be made warming with cooking and spices. Examples of warming fruits are pomegranates, apricots, raspberries, oranges, peaches and dried fruits. Warming spices that tend to go well with fruit include anise, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, coriander, fennel, ginger, and nutmeg.

Experience the Powerful Healing of Sound Through the Didgeridoo and the Djembe Drum.

Warm Fruit with Ghee Melt 1 teaspoon of ghee in a small saucepan over mediumlow heat. Add 2/3 cup of fresh or frozen fruit, stirring until coated. Cook until the fruit is soft and warm, about 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in a pinch of powdered ginger and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and serve. A serving is the size of the eater’s fist. This recipe will serve one adult or two small children. Apples, peaches and pears are especially good prepared this way.

Warm Fruit “Pudding” Place 2/3 cup of fresh or frozen fruit and ¼ cup of apple, orange or other fruit juice in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil. Add a ¼ - ½ teaspoons of your favorite warming spices, reduce heat and simmer for 5 - 6 minutes. Meanwhile, mix 2 TBSP kudzu root starch with ¼ cup water. After the fruit has simmered, add the kudzu water to the sauce pan and stir. The juice will thicken to a pudding-like consistency. Use 1 TBSP kudzu root starch in 2 TBSP water for a sauce-like consistency. Serves one adult or two small children. Kudzu root starch soothes the stomach and intestines. Find it in the macrobiotic section of your health food store. Hot cereal becomes my morning staple as temperatures drop. Rolled oats are evenly absorbed, keeping my energy and mood steady until lunch-time. Gomasio, a condiment made from sesame seeds and salt, is a good calcium source. The dried fruit naturally sweetens the oatmeal, eliminating honey or sugar. The nuts lend crunch and a sense of fullness. Hemp and flax seeds provide quality Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. This is exactly how I make it, on the stovetop, as fast as or faster than using a microwave. Winter Oatmeal Place 1 cup water in a small sauce pan. As the water is coming to a boil, add ½ cup rolled oats, 1 TBSP gomasio, a handful of dried cherries, a handful of coconut shreds, a handful of raisins, and handful of raw walnuts, almonds or 1 TBSP of raw almond butter. By now the water should be boiling. Stir, reduce the heat, and simmer, covered, for five minutes. Meanwhile grind 2 teaspoons each flax and hemp seeds in a spice grinder until fine. Stir into cooked oatmeal and serve. I like it topped with almond milk. Serves one adult. Evolving…

Making Love Last By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. …but let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. —Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet The mystery of relationships is one that has prompted many people to compose poems, songs, books and other works of art. These expressions of love often focus on intimacy and a sense of togetherness. Gibran speaks about the need for space and a rhythm of coming together and moving apart. It is interesting to me that our ability to be truly intimate is based upon our equal ability to be independent. The work of Murray Bowen, a psychiatrist who researched intergenerational family systems for over 50 years, addresses our need to differentiate ourselves from others as part of the process of development and maturity. Daniel Papero, in Bowen Family Systems Theory, describes differentiation for a family as “…the goal of remaining in viable emotional contact with the family yet retaining the ability to function with responsible autonomy.” The ability of an individual to be simultaneously in emotional contact and being autonomous is a paradox that most of us spend much of our lives trying to master. When we "fall in love", a cascade of neurochemicals is awakened. The feelgood endorphins and oxytocin, a brain chemical that is associated with bonding, attachment, mothering and sexual activity, are activated. This is when we literally "feel" love with our whole bodymind. When this fades the relationship may become strained. The person who always wanted to be with us is gone too much of the time. The person who told us loving things has become mute and distant. The person who wanted affection, touching and amazing sex has disappeared. What has happened? Researchers tell us that the sense of satisfaction after four years in a relationship goes from very satisfied most of the time to 90 percent reporting that they are not satisfied. It is time to call on lessons learned. Re-awakening the ability to self-soothe helps us with healthy independence, not depending on a partner to provide emotional resiliency. We must continue our process of differentiation, developing the Self and our potential, taking re-

This is the time in a relationship when we must learn to find the balance between quality time together and separate activities. We also need to learn new skills. Gary Chapman in his book, The Five Languages of Love, gives a very simple way to find out what kinds of things help our partner feel loved. They are: Words of affirmation Quality Time Receiving Gifts Acts of Service Physical Touch One size does not fit all. People feel loved in different ways. Sometimes the key to a harmonious relationship can be responding to our beloved’s needs in a more sensitive, thoughtful way. There is a quick 30-item profile in Chapman’s book that will tell you and your partner your preferred languages. We usually give love in the way we would like to receive it. This can be a disaster. Many times I have seen couples shift from fighting, distancing and distrust to a newly-found connection when each one reaches out to the other in their "language" of love. It is usually quite simple and has powerful results. Understanding your partner’s love language is also the beginning of constructing the essential "love maps" that Dr. John Gottman developed. You can find more about love maps and other helpful relationship books by going to his website: www.gottman.com. Finding the balance of intimacy and autonomy, growing as an individual and as a part of a relationship or family is a lifetime quest. The moving sea between us that Kahlil Gibran speaks of is the energetic potential for connection. Dive in and find more intimacy and autonomy! Self-Gifting for Valentine’s Day By Carmelita Davis Beets In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to write about—what else—the subject of love. Not love as in your spouse or significant other, though. And not love as it relates to your children, your parents, your siblings and other relatives, or your friends. They are all very important; and, I certainly do hope there are many people in your life that you love and who love you back! But I’m referring to what is, I believe, one of the most important loves of all— the love you have for yourself. I believe that so many of the problems in our world are the result of a kink in the love mechanisms of the majority of people, problems that have been there since childhood. These love issues have been buried and not looked at or dealt with; and as a result, many people settle for a less-than-fulfilling life. When we don’t love ourselves there’s a big hole in our hearts. We try to fill that hole with something: other relationships, food, addictions, long hours at work. None of these things can fill the void, though. Loving ourselves is the only thing that can fills that hole. It’s also impossible to love someone else completely until we love ourselves. That’s because when we love and fully accept ourselves, imperfections and all, we can love someone else and accept their imperfections as well. We all know people who are extremely critical of others and who are never satisfied, don’t we? While it may seem that they think they’re better than everyone else, the truth is that they don’t love and accept themselves. They don’t feel good about themselves, so it’s almost impossible for them to feel good about anyone else. Loving yourself provides an inner peace and an outer glow that radiates quiet confidence. This is quite different from arrogance or self-centeredness, which are based in fear and doubt—not

Rev. Maitreya Zohar love. Some years ago, I planned a trip to New York City by myself. I was a bit hesitant to go there alone, but before I left I made up my mind to see the spirit and love of God in everyone I encountered. What an incredible trip I had! People seemed to go out of their way to help me, give directions, suggest restaurants, etc. I felt safe, secure, and loved and was never afraid or at a loss for anything the entire time. That’s what loving yourself is all about—realizing you’re part of God. When you truly know that, how can you not love yourself? In the final analysis, I believe that loving yourself is spiritual; it's realizing that God is present within you at all times. When you can live every moment of every day with the presence of God in your heart, it’s easier to let go of fear, anger, resentment, and guilt. Remember that you are a beautiful child of light! in business

Hypnotherapy in Motion Hypnotherapists face quite a bit of adversity. Why? For one, the general public thinks of it as a stage act and have no desire to be publicly humiliated as they prance around like a pony or quack like a duck. Two, they question if it really works and rule it out as having no personal value. Numerous cultures over thousands of years used a trance-like state to achieve mind and body wellness. Injured clansmen and soldiers were placed in a sleeplike state while the village medicine man/surgeon tended their wounds; shamans performed healing from deep trance-like meditation; farmers have calmed chickens to prepare them for egg laying or livestock for milking, etc… In 1958, the American Medical Association, and two years later the American Psychological Association, endorsed hypnosis as a viable medical and mental health practice. Those ancient methods led to the hypnosis techniques practiced today and helped countless numbers manage pain, overcome disabling fears, reduce stress, stop addictive patterns, recall suppressed memories and achieve amazing personal feats. Kelly Murphy-Boule (pronounced Boo-lay) graduated from Emporia State University with a master’s degree in counseling and a bachelor’s in psychology, moved to Kansas City and took two jobs, part-time as a waitress at Tanners and an entry level counselor. Kelly’s goal was to have her own counseling practice; however, she believed she would have to be older and more experienced in order to be credible. Remarkably, Tanners proved to be the catalyst for empowerment and change. After noticing a bartender’s complete transformation in a matter of weeks, Kelly asked what had happened. The bartender said that she had seen a hypnotherapist. Kelly always questioned if hypnosis really worked and seeing results like these surprised and stuck with her. A year later, driven by a desire to stop smoking, she decided to try hypnosis. At her first visit, the hypnotherapist encouraged Kelly to start her own practice–noting her lack of confidence was holding her back. For eight weeks, her sessions focused on stopping smoking, becoming healthier, and improving selfconfidence. The results she experienced went far beyond her expectations. Her passion to help others ignited with purpose. With a new confident resolve, Kelly decided to add hypnotherapist to her career path. In 1999, she enrolled in the Mottin & Johnson Institute of Hypnosis certification course and set out to start her own practice. February 2010

Evolving ...

That was 10 years ago. Kelly experienced the angst of starting a nontraditional business and faced the ebb and flow for nearly three years until her practice had grown enough to support her full-time. She continued to see her hypnotherapist and work as a part-time waitress. She believed she wasn’t just starting a business, she was building a reputation. Success required her to find a way to turn her passion for helping others loose. Triumphantly, Kelly found a way. She became zealous about her clients, following up, hosting small appreciation parties and workshops, and attending networking functions—because these efforts fed her goal of truly demonstrating care for others. She fervently engaged others, sharing their personal experiences, remained active in the community, and sought out opportunities to learn and enhance her knowledge—keeping the passion alive within herself and having an infectious effect on others. She opened her mind and spirit to the true meaning of sincerity and found that the key to demonstrating her passion to others was in being present in their moment—not just her own. As an independent professional, Kelly Murphy-Boule followed her philosophy and enhanced her practice by adding holistic nutritional consulting. living proof

From Civil War to Human Rights Jasenka Šabanović was 15 years old when her father was taken to a concentration camp. Living in war-ravaged Bosnia during the civil war, just a few days later her home was hit by a grenade. Jasenka, her brother and mother ran from the house in their pajamas, dodging bombs and gunfire, begging neighbors for shelter. They eventually found a partially-fallen office building where they took shelter in the basement for the next four years. Living in hiding, they subsisted off of rice and beans. Luck was Jasenka’s focal point: unlucky to live during a period of unrest; lucky to be alive. Jaskena explains, “We were unlucky to live in a country where the ‘right’ religion decided who lived and who would be ‘extinguished’. This was a time of hopelessness, powerlessness, helplessness, despair, hunger, confusion, and death was all around us… We were unlucky. “The only hopes we had were to wake up alive day by day, and that our family would all live through that day. Our memories were futile, because they were merely pathways to remind us of where we currently were. Our only wants and desires were just life.” Once her father was released from the concentration camp, the family escaped to Germany. For four years, she learned the new language, went to school and felt safe. Then they were denied asylum and could no longer stay in Germany. After moving several times, Jasenka’s family found out about a program the United States offered for displaced immigrants. Coming to the United States should have been a joyous occasion for Jasenka but, instead, she fell into a deep depression. Jasenka was overwhelmed by the changes: severe heat, everything seemed so immense, the grass, the people, the language barrier. She had to start all over again and wasn’t sure if she had the strength. Jasenka had a nervous breakdown and wound up in hospital. Of this period, Jasenka says, “I suffered severely with nightmares and sleeplessness. I no longer trusted life. I did not trust that there was not another trick up its sleeve and something else waiting to happen to us. I did not know if I was lucky, or if I was still unlucky. I didn’t even understand why I was still alive.” Then one morning, after waking from one of those nightmares, she realized that there was silence. “The sun was

shining, and there were no sounds of war; no bombs, no grenades and no snipers. It was not another day of despair—I was alive! I was really alive! At that moment I knew that my purpose in life was to share my story and that by doing so, to help others feel alive, and to feel the peace that I have found.” With new-found strength, Jasenka gradually began adjusting to her new life, learning a strange language and eventually going to college. It was a confusing period, but she learned to forge ahead: “As a kid you can’t understand why people would kill each other. I had to grow up fast. I had to realize the worst in humanity and what we are capable of. But I’ve also seen the peace.” Jasenka began exploring her life and the lessons learned. She realized that no matter how much pain one experiences, what life has offered, these traits create a person who wouldn’t be the same without them. She asked herself, “How can I turn around what happened to me and make the world more peaceful and loving in the process?” She understands humanity and the ability to help others. Jasenka has turned this compassion into a life purpose—coaching others. Though Jasenka previously rated her life by chances of luck or misfortune, she no longer takes that stance. As a life coach, she teaches others the power of self reliance. “I do not believe in lucky or unlucky people. We all have the choice to be lucky. “There are three things that decide our luck: number one is to look deep inside ourselves and identify our patterns of living; identify our fears, and figure out what is stopping us from being lucky. “Second, we need the ability to recognize the red flags and to be able to rationally distinguish ‘ego-danger’ from real life-threatening situations—there are only a few in our entire life. “The third thing is the commitment to being lucky. We do that by setting the right goals for ourselves. Being on the path of luck is doing what is necessary to achieve what we want.” And Jasenka continues to create her own luck. show it may take several weeks to take effect and it should be tried for six months before determining that it doesn’t work. That is a different expectation than the one we have with ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and rightly so since glucosamine works to rebuild cartilage rather than just block inflammation and pain.

Dietary Supplements and Your Choices By Celtina K. Reinert, Pharm.D.

6. One change at a time. We want change now! Unfortunately, sometimes changes happen slower, especially with supplements and particularly when you follow this next advice: add or subtract one supplement at a time. If you want to take supplements for high cholesterol and you pick up several supplements and start taking them and something causes a side effect, which of the five supplements caused the adverse effect? Was it the supplements? Adding one supplement at a time helps to determine cause and effect if any beneficial or adverse effects occur.

What comes to mind when you’re walking down the dietary supplement aisle in your favorite health store or pharmacy? The information and claims jumping out at you can seem overwhelming at times. A large, but varying amount of information is available on supplements since they include a wide range of products including herbs, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. With some supplements we have significantly more information than with others. I’ve put together a few thoughts to consider as you are making decisions about using supplements. 1. Know what you’re looking to use. Dietary supplements come in every form and seem like they can help just about every ailment. There are several choices to help improve cholesterol, cleanse your liver, or improve your energy. How do you know which one’s the best choice for you? Use reliable resources such as http://nccam.nih.gov, and talk to your healthcare provider about the best choices for you. 2. Natural does not always equal safe. Dietary supplements are purported in some circles because they are natural; therefore, they are better for you. This isn’t always the case. Red yeast rice has a component that is the same chemical structure as lovastatin, a cholesterollowering drug. If a patient has a bad reaction to lovastatin, or a similar drug, red yeast rice is not a good “natural” alternative. 3. Quality is something to ponder. Supplements are not regulated in the same manner as prescription medications. There are recommended manufacturing practices in

place that manufacturers should follow and using supplements manufactured by a company who verify the quality of their supplements (purity, contaminants, made with the correct product, etc) is important to make sure you are really getting what you paid for. Thirdparty verification is also done on some supplements by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and Consumer Lab. Checking with these resources can help one choose a verified product. The safety of individual dietary supplements is also important. Unlike prescription medications, supplements do not have to be shown to be safe before they are sold to patients. Using reliable resources, including your healthcare provider, can help determine how much is known about the safety of the supplement and how safe it may be for you to use.

4. Supplements are medicine. Dietary supplements have medicinal properties. They may not be as strong as some prescription medications and may take longer for full effect, but they are not benign molecules that we introduce to our bodies. Some supplements are safe to take, but not everything on the nutrition shelf is right for everyone. Supplements can interact with medications, with disease states, even with other supplements. Check with your health practitioner before adding or subtracting supplements from your regimen. 5. Know what to expect. Having appropriate expectations when using dietary supplements is important; the desired effect may take longer to kick in than other therapies or the effect may not be as great. For example, when using glucosamine for osteoarthritis, studies

7. Discuss your supplements and other therapies with all of your healthcare providers. Periodic review with each of your healthcare providers helps to make sure you are on the same page and working with the same information. It also allows assessment of whether your supplements are working for you in the way you would like or if adjustments need to be made. By Rev. Maitreya Zohar With my mental body running amok trying to decide what to write regarding alternative healing, I hear the muffled voice of my spirit guides speaking to me in the background. I breathe deeply, centering myself. I take another deep breath, expanding myself beyond thought and opening to listening. The voice becomes clearer and it’s saying, “Alternative suggests one has a choice regarding Healers. How can there be a choice when there is only one Healer acting through us all? Even though you have studied and label yourself a Healer, the true Healer is and always will be God.” On a daily basis, I call this Healer by the names God, Goddess, Spirit, the Divine, the Source, Great Spirit and the Universe. One of the ways I describe my work is to say, “I am a holistic healer.” I have studied many forms of alternative healing, becoming a Reiki Master and Amanohuna practitioner. I have reawakened my inner Native Shaman and realigned myself with the Goddess Energies, of which one is Magnified Healing. I access various energy techniques that I call forth from past lives and experiences, offering a truly unique and personal energy session for each person. In the sense that alternative healing for many refers to unconventional or nontraditional ways of healing, I work as an alternative healer. However, am I really the Healer? I believe the answer is both yes and no. It all depends on which “I” is speaking— the big “I” of my Spirit or the little “i” of my ego/ personality. As a Healer I see it as my task to awaken, spark or ignite your inner eternal flame, your Spirit, and with that flame burning, the healing you experience is generated from deep within yourself, rather than from some external source. We are but mere catalysts to support the awakening of the true Healer within you. Yes, you are 100 percent responsible for your healing. Societal conditioning may have you giving your power away to allopathic or holistic practitioners in places of authority, but it is You who is in charge of your healing. My experience with allopathic medicine is that it does not assist in releasing core issues and most often only treats the client’s symptoms. Holistic practitioners assist in removing causal energies that keep you from realizing your inner Healer, meaning they treat the core issues as well as the symptoms. As balance is restored, you access the Healer within you, thus having the opportunity to create and embrace a miracle. February 2010

One True Healer

The holistic practitioner is also there to fan your inner flame should your amnesia return and you resume your self -destructive behavior patterns. In 2003, a client with whiplash came to me about three weeks after a car accident. She had seen other practitioners and doctors and as she lied down cautiously I was instantly guided to work on her stomach area. She mentioned that the pain was in her neck. I touched her neck, began sending energy and heard my guides say, “The neck pain is a symptom. The cause lies in her solar plexus.” I returned to her stomach area and again she reminded me that the pain was in her neck. I explained, “Your physical pain is a symptom. To heal we need to work with the cause, which to me, is originating in your solar plexus.” We spoke about personal power, where she was betraying herself and about her ability to say “No!” I suggested that being injured gave her a reason to say no and create boundaries. I provided “homework” suggestions and she left in pain, slightly less, but still in pain. The next morning she called to share that a miracle had taken place, as she awoke 100 percent pain free. I suggested she not question a miracle and inwardly gave thanks to the true Healer. By clearing the energy blockages and embracing her lesson, her inner Healer awakened and She created her own

miracle. So, to the word alternative, we have many choices about who we want to assist us and what modality would be best for us now. Of course, I would love everyone reading this article to receive a session from me; that would be very good for my business but it may or may not be good for you. When people ask me what modality they should select, which one is best, which Healer is a good one, I respond, “Really, your questions can only be answered by You. I can give you a few suggestions for choosing if you’d like.” My suggestions go something like this: A top priority is to create a sense of inner safety. What follows the first thought is: Do you feel guided to work with a man or a woman? This can narrow the selection process down significantly. It is very important to follow your inner guidance, as it is likely that it is your inner Healer directing you to a particular modality or person. Next, I might prompt: Do you enjoy being touched? If you desire no touch, then this rules out many modalities. What about credentials? I find word -of-mouth to be the best credential. Some of the best Healers I have worked with did not have a modern-day diploma or letters before or after their name.

As a final suggestion, make the choosing process fun. See your visits to this healer as an adventure in selfdiscovery because, after all, that is what will happen—you will discover that You are the only one who can heal you. Healing requires being accountable and taking ownership. If you are feeling that either path, the allopathic or the holistic, has “failed” you and you’re sitting in a place of judging, this means you have placed your power outside yourself. Remember, there is only one Healer, God/Goddess, and this Spirit resides within you. Rev. The Theory of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine: Yin and Yang, the Five Elements and the Emotions By Paul Finney When I was a boy, a friend and I would bandy about the terms “yin” and “yang”; but, it was not until I studied Chinese Medicine that I came to have a fuller understanding of their meaning. As I tell my audiences when I speak before civic clubs and other community organizations, the dichotomy of yin and yang is best explained by the dichotomy of matter and energy. And, the dichotomy of matter and energy is best exemplified by that of the earth and sun. From the earth we get all the matter or yin that we need to sustain life. From the sun comes the energy or yang that sustains us, the earth, and its creatures, and makes the plants that we eat (matter or yin) grow. In Chinese Medicine, our bodies are composed of yin and yang. To be sure, there is a more elementary building block called jing or vital essence. People who are born with an abundance of jing may age slowly and live long lives, and vice-versa. One can supplement and conserve this vital essence by eating well, living wisely and avoiding dissipating jing in foolish living. In Chinese Medicine, the kidneys are the repository of jing, yin and yang; and they supply the other organs with these vital and basic substances of life. From jing, yin and yang, the body makes blood and chi. We know what blood is from our Western educations and from cutting our fingers. Qi is an eastern notion often defined as vital life force energy. The body makes qi in several of the vital organs from jing, yin and yang, the food that we eat and air that we breathe. Qi is primarily a yang (energy) substance, though it has some yin (matter) in it. Think of it as energy with some substance (yin) added. Blood is primarily a yin substance (matter); but not entirely, as it has some qi (a yang substance) in it. So blood is substance made from both yin and yang, though it is mostly yang. Think of the qi in the blood as giving it more life, helping it to flow. So in building our Chinese model of the body, we began with jing (vital essence), yin and yang, and now understand blood and qi. The qi flows through the acupuncture meridians and in so doing helps regulate the functions of the vital organs. One of my earliest teachers told me

that the meridian men (doctors) of ancient China could see the acupuncture meridians. Over twenty years ago in Wichita, where I began my practice, I had just finished treating a patient, when she remarked, as she ran her index finger down her leg, “Oh, I see the meridian.” And her finger jogged exactly where the stomach meridian jogs below the knee. Whatever doubts I may have had about the actual existence of the meridians vanished. More recently, researchers have discovered an actual physicality to the meridians such that they may yet end up in the Western anatomy textbooks. Now, that will be a paradigm shift! The theory of Chinese Medicine was constructed two to three thousand years ago before modern science invented the electron microscope—let alone the microscope itself. With their deep insight and wisdom, the ancient doctors related the emotions and character strengths to the vital organs and the five elements. In Chinese Medicine there are five elements (see chart), reminiscent of the four elements in Greek philosophy. They are depicted in the graph as water, wood, fire, earth and metal. They nourish each other in the cycle as depicted. Water makes wood grow. Wood feeds the burning fire. Fire turns to ash (earth). And from the earth we get metal. That water flows from metal is less evident. That water flows from metal is not as important in keeping the model neat and tidy when one reflects that water (the kidneys) is the source of yin and yang, starting the whole cycle over. This cycle of the elements and organs nourishing one another is the tip of the iceberg in the interrelationship of the organs. There is a complex set of interrelationships such that when the body and the emotions are healthy, the organs hold each other in homeostasis and vice-versa. The second chart shows the relationship of the five vital yin and yang organs to the elements, seasons, emotions and even, amazingly, virtues. There is a correspondence between East and West in sayings or aphorisms of our cultures. I am one of these people who worries about the turtles getting across the highways after the spring rains bring them out in April. Once I pulled my car over, got out and picked up a turtle to get him quickly across the road before a car ran over

him. Fortunately, I held him at arm’s length, as he immediately urinated. We make jokes about people wetting their pants. Fear is the emotion of the kidney and bladder. In Chinese medicine the liver is often said to be involved in allergies. I have a patient who in the spring (the season of the liver, which is of the element wood) has her allergies flare up; and, left untreated, she gets so angry she feels road-rage while driving. Now this is a very intelligent spiritual woman just telling me how her body reacts. A college friend of mine is a liver patient if ever there was one. He can get angry easily, but his virtue is that he can be very benevolent to others. The heart in Chinese Medicine is said to be the emperor or controller of the body. Now the emperor, in order to keep the respect of his subjects and rule wisely, must have the very best sense of propriety, otherwise the kingdom would not run smoothly. Notice in the chart that the virtue of fire or the heart is propriety. In Western literature and folklore, summer is the time of romance (joy of the heart).

My father had a wonderful expression, “He vented his spleen,” by which he meant he expressed his anxiety. In Chinese Medicine the spleen and stomach are paired yin and yang organs, both of the element earth. We know that people who worry too much get stomach ulcers. That our lung’s emotion is sadness should be self-evident. When we cry, it is a paroxysm of our lungs. When we are sad or tired we catch colds, as the protective qi set up by the lungs is weakened and the wind and cold invade our meridians. Ever notice when you or others have a cold that depression or fatigue is often involved? As we go through the seasons of our lives, it's wise to pay attention to our elements, emotions, virtues and emperors that rule our bodies, our kingdoms. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Oxygen for Healing? Treatment lasts about an hour and involves lying on a mattress in an 8 foot by 3 foot soft-sided chamber. The pressure rises to 1.3 atmospheres, which is about the equivalent of an 11-foot dive.

In a society truly set on curing illness and not just treating the symptoms, hyperbaric oxygen treatments could be a key to recovering the ability to care for oneself and enjoy life after an illness or injury. By Dr. Susan Anschutz What therapy could improve the function of a recovering stroke patient, eliminate muscle pain in fibromyalgia, help with healing and swelling after reconstructive surgery, kill off Lyme bacteria, and improve the sleep, behavior and gastrointestinal health for autistic children? What if you were to find out the therapy was completely passive, even done while the patient sleeps, contained no medications and assisted in clearing the body of toxins? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can do all this and more. HBOT is the use of oxygen at greater than one atmosphere to assist in healing tissues that have been damaged due to oxygen deprivation. The first hyperbaric chambers were built in England in 1664; later in France they were called air baths. Doctors theorized that compressed air increased blood flow to the brain and other organs. In 1921, Kansas City

physician Orval Cunningham was featured in the Saturday Evening Post for treating patients with a wide variety of conditions in his twin chambers that held 36 patients each and included toilets and showers. Today, with the use of SPECT scans, we can actually see the changes these pioneers theorized HBOT was making. While most physicians in the US are familiar with the short list of 13 FDA approved conditions treated traditionally at two atmospheres and greater, other countries are well versed in the many applications of HBOT. In Russia, a list of 60 conditions are regularly treated including: heart disease, cirrhosis, ulcers, macular degeneration, stroke and Parkinson’s disease. In the United Kingdom, a network of centers is set up to treat patients with multiple sclerosis; it is one of the first treatments for stroke and traumatic head injury throughout Europe. In China they treat infants with brain damage due to a lack of

oxygen at birth. HBOT works by using the laws of gas diffusion to put more oxygen into the body than can be carried on the red blood cells alone. At increased pressure, oxygen can be carried in the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid and joint fluid without the need for blood cells. So now, areas with low blood flow due to damaged vessels and inflammation can get the oxygen they need to repair and begin the healing process. As these cells get more oxygen they demand more oxygen and release substances that increase the growth of new blood vessels. These changes can be seen in angiograms. Some of the reported effects include: faster healing and decreased swelling in soft tissue injuries, decreased sensitivity and pain in nerves, decrease/elimination of pain and spasm in muscles, improved memory, improved behavior, improved speech and eye contact, decrease in tantrums and improvements in appropriate behaviors. Treatment lasts about an hour and involves lying on a mattress in an 8 foot by 3 foot soft-sided chamber. The pressure rises to 1.3 atmospheres, which is about the equivalent of an 11 -foot dive. To your ears, it is about the same as being in an airplane (the ultimate chamber). Because we don’t use liquid oxygen, there is no problem bringing in personal electronics and cell phones. A child and an adult can fit in together and it’s a great time to snuggle, read or watch a movie. People usually find the extra oxygen helps them relax and many sleep. They often notice pain goes away completely while in the chamber and for most, after a base of 5-10 treatments, it will stay away for up to 10 days. At that time a maintenance schedule of once a week may be all they need. For a

post-stroke, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy or autism patient, treatment plans start at 40 sessions given over a 4-10 week period to allow for repair of damaged nerve cells. The key that brings all these conditions together is inflammation. No matter what the initial injury, inflammation is almost always the body’s second reaction. Inflammation is very useful in bringing in the initial healing response; but, when not controlled, it is the cause of continuing pain and disability whether in muscle, tendon or nervous tissue. When an injury or condition is chronic (more than 72 hours old), studies show that lower pressures given over more treatments may be more effective. In the older injury we believe the HBOT is targeting blood vessel damage and low oxygen damage to the cells. This opens the door to FDA-approved mild hyperbaric chambers that can be purchased and used in a clinic or home for a fraction of the cost and do not require liquid oxygen, eliminating the dangers of fire. In a society truly set on curing illness and not just treating the symptoms, hyperbaric oxygen treatments could be a key to recovering the ability to care for oneself and enjoy life after an illness or injury. It is not a cure-all, it’s a safe, effective addition to current rehabilitation and holistic protocols for many chronic illnesses and injuries. Dr. Anschutz is a Chiropractic Physician in Lee's Summit who specializes in gentle adjustments, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy for neurological injuries and chronic pain, and functional diagnostic medicine. Her website is www.summitofhealth.com and phone number is 816-554-4771.

spiritual horoscopes

Spiritual Horoscope for Februay By Aluna Michaels, M.A. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Happy birthday Aquarius! Meditate on being able to truly receive the love around you. Quiet time with your soul gets you out of your head and into your heart. Feeling loved by others creates more self love. You’ll be able to release critical thinking and have more compassion for your own weaknesses, as well as those of others. You’ll also notice an increase in finances and work opportunities! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You’re feeling good about yourself and are maybe beginning a new relationship. Even if you have new love, be sure to nurture your love affair with yourself. Break the bad habit of putting your needs behind the demands of others. All bonds will be healthier and happier if you stay clear about who you are. Don’t water yourself down to please others. Your ability to be intimate and to trust will deepen immensely. Aries (March 21 – April 19) Seek out friends that are also on a spiritual path. Look for people who walk their talk. They’ll help you take actions consistently. You tend to blaze excitedly, and then abandon spiritual practices when enthusiasm wanes. Try a simple meditation chant like, “I love you”. Easy to remember and soothing to your fiery Aries nature. Also, seek wise counsel before saying or doing anything rash when it comes to changes in work or relationships this month, ok??! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Make a decision to surround yourself with people who are kind, gentle and supportive. As a Taurus, you can take a

lot of crap, but why put up with “mild” abuse from relationship partners, coworkers or so-called friends?! Once your break off destructive ties, or set CLEAR limits that don’t waver, the Universe will bring new people and situations that feed your self worth. You’re worth standing up for, so be your own emotional bodyguard! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You have many financial and career opportunities. You’ll be surprised at how many people appreciate you and value your talents. Meditate on the unlimited prosperity of the Universe and on how much you deserve abundance. You can make more, but develop debt or spending problems if you don’t feel worthy to receive. Also contemplate love and relationships as an aspect of prosperity. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Meditate on co-dependency issues. Are there people in your life who overly depend on you? Or upon whom you overly depend? True intimacy comes from bonding with another when you both feel whole. Your soul is the only true source of empowerment . . . and you can’t supply spiritual power for anyone else if they don’t have an inner connection. This clarity will bring you relief and help your relationships become healthier and happier. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) If you’re partnered, try to incorporate meditation into your relationship. You’ll be amazed at how trust and intimacy develop. When you feel an argument brewing, ask to sit quietly together and breathe before you say things you’ll re-

gret. Or you can remove yourself from the room, letting your partner know you need a minute to breathe and connect with your Higher Self. If single, seek out people who are on a spiritual path. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You cold be starting a new relationship. Please don’t criticize or overanalyze yourself! What are you trying to do, talk him/her out of being interested in you?! Enjoy being in love and being loved! If already partnered, be aware of how often you put yourself down. Believe that your spouse actually cares about you and finds you delightful! You can’t be truly intimate with others if you don’t love yourself. Thank people for compliments and use their positive messages as meditative mantras! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) It’s time to get over negative body image once and for all! Meditate on all the wonderful things your body can do. Send your body loving thoughts. Your spiritual light is diminished by the nitpicking. Bless others by pondering the beauty of your soul that radiates through your skin. You may even find hidden anger about childhood issues that is under the appearance issues. By releasing that anger, you won’t have to take it out on yourself! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) In order to let relationships flourish, you need to constantly clear your heart of old disappointments and bad karma. You have a great opportunity to start a new bond or dramatically improve your current one. Use your mediation time to both forgive and forget about past pain. The Universe wants your soul to feel

renewed and clear so you can start completely fresh. Release your hurt pride and open to a positive future! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) How can you improve your home, making it more beautiful, neat or cozy? It would be great to have a party and fill your house with great loving and fun vibes. You might even be able to work from home or start a new business venture. On the “down” side, let go of “friends” who take advantage of your good nature, or those who have no goals. Spend more time with people who are positive and focused on their dreams! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Powerful Pluto is bearing down on you, bringing great financial and selfgrowth opportunities, but is making you so intense! Make it your spiritual task to laugh more. Watch funny movies. Hang out with goofy friends. During meditation, dwell on lighthearted, positive topics. Resist contemplating problematic issues. Trust that your soul is healing and growing whether or not you “force” it to evolve by constant scrutiny.

books Mind, Intention, Belief...Can These Factors Influence Healing? How do placebos work? Can science explain “miracle” cures? A ground-breaking new film, THE LIVING MATRIX—THE NEW SCIENCE OF HEALING (Beyond Words), addresses these questions and explores how quantum physics, energy fields, and consciousness directly affect our health and well-being. For the first time, leading scientists, researchers, and holistic practitioners

share the latest science and alternative concepts that are revolutionizing healthcare as we know it. The film premiered to sold out audiences in London and Los Angeles and is now available on DVD. THE LIVING MATRIX is a provocative, full-length feature documentary on healing and the nature of human health. The film uncovers innovative breakthroughs and discoveries that will transform your understanding of how we heal. The most significant revelation is how energy and information fields are as influential as genetics in determining human health, physiology and biochemistry. The film illustrates the undeniable benefits of integrating alternative healing modalities into conventional healthcare and advocates shifting from a disease centered system to a healingcentered model. The film also shares compelling true stories of peo-

ple who recovered from chronic illness—including a five-year-old boy born with cerebral palsy, an osteopathic doctor with a brain tumor, and a Midwest housewife bedridden with chronic fatigue syndrome. Leading researchers and health practitioners uncover the scientific theories behind these "miracle cures" and indicate how these concepts affect the future of healthcare. Stunning 3D animation and graphics take viewers on a journey deep into the structure of the human body to illustrate how quantum biology influences health. The Living Matrix—The New Science of Healing (running time 83 minutes) is now available on DVD for $19.95 for more information please visit: www.thelivingmatrixmovie.com Evolving…

Evolving…

February 2010

What’s Being Said I picked up a copy (Sept 2009) of Evolving at Border's Bookstore on I-29 and Barry Rd. And I just had to drop you a note and tell you thank you so much for this great magazine and the fact that it was free is amazing! There are several businesses featured in the magazine that are on my radar now to go to, so I hope they continue to support you and this great read! And again, thanks for the magazine. Great work ! Tammy Ferguson Shepherd Wow!!!! What creative geniuses you are. I love the ad and Connie I so appreciate the word-smithing with putting my ad/event information together at the 11th hour. Your enthusiasm, giving 120 percent and genuine caring is evident and has blessed me in ways unimaginable. I was astounded and ever so grateful for the effort and time you took in pulling together numerous bits of information from going online to InterPlay and the info I sent. It touched my heart when you acknowledged other energy work that I do that I have kept under covers and put it out for me on the ad without my prompting. Amazing. Above and beyond, your talents and your sincerity and your loving heart are very evident. Words cannot say thanks enough. Devi Wetterer
