Dear Friend, Months ago, as we planned the articles for this issue on holistic business, I wondered what exactly IS a holistic business? Alternative medicine is what comes to mind when I think of the word holistic. But holistic business isn’t just for medical practitioners, it’s a model for being. Holistic – (adj) – Taking a view of the whole rather than focusing on the components; the fundamental approach executives should take in setting strategy; also used in holistic medicine, where a practitioner looks at the whole body to diagnose a health problem and provide the best solution.

You Are the

Holistic Hints

Healer page 14 page 16

Foremost in this model is the desire to do no harm. And, as in life, it constitutes a balance of principles and values. Choosing to own and operate a holistic business entails setting a rigorous code of ethics that benefits all—and adhering to them. A holistic (wholistic) business model looks at the whole picture versus narrowly focused parts. It presents the opportunity to showcase our talents and once and for all prove that we can do what we love, make a difference in the world/community, and generate a healthy living in the process. The advertisers in Evolving practice holistic business principles, manifesting a better life for themselves as well as their customers. I hope you enjoy the articles this month as well as our special section on another key group: Women in Business.

The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse

Most New Year’s Resolutions we make in 2010 will focus on the physical or financial aspects of our lives; a new diet or exercise regime, a new job, more money, a better relationship. Now, a radical new program offers a detoxification diet for your heart, mind and soul. In her new book, The 21 Day Consciousness Cleanse: A Breakthrough

Program for Connecting with Your Soul’s Deepest Purpose (Harper One), NY Times best-selling author and prominent transformational life coach Debbie Ford offers a practical three-week program that promises to permanently and positively alter the quality and direction of your life. According to Ford, “Most New Year’s Resolutions don’t work because if we don’t cleanse out the toxic emotions and experiences from our past and get honest about the present we will be stuck with the same old thoughts, patterns and regrets and end up with the same results.” Ford shares that the “noise” in our minds—guilt, doubt, fear, shame, insecurity, and heaviness of the past we carry around with us keep us from living the life we were meant to live and from reaching our goals. She adds, “This program will enable you to take back your power from the outer world, turn inward, and embark on the journey of reconnecting with the spirit that moves you.” With The 21 Day Consciousness Cleanse you can clean out the container of your

own consciousness, enabling you to experience your most soulful self. In just 21 days you will purify your mind and thoughts gaining confidence, strength and inner peace. In her book, Ford walks you through a profound three-part process which includes simple daily exercises, cleansing rituals and prayers: Week One: The Past. The first seven days of the Consciousness Cleanse are dedicated to clearing out the negative thinking, turbulent emotions, false assumptions, outdated beliefs, unresolved incidents and limiting thoughts that have taken root inside your mind. You will be liberated from confusion, fear, guilt and selfdoubt as you open up to new realms of awareness, emotional freedom and spiritual liberation. Week Two: The Present. Once you have released everything that has depleted your vitality and held you back, you will stand firmly in the present moment and take an honest look at where—and who—you are

today, observing what is and what is not working in your life. You will listen more deeply to the calling of your soul. Week Three: The Future. In this final phase of the Consciousness Cleanse you will have the opportunity to look into the future and see who you want to be from this day forward. You will reconnect with your highest self and experience love, contentment, and compassion as you step into the brilliance of your soul’s purpose. The 21 Day Consciousness Cleanse uncovers the inner source that lifts us out of resignation and mediocrity and into hope, excitement and a future filled with surprises, possibility and deep purpose. James Hollis to Speak on Mid-Life Meaning James Hollis, author and director of Houston’s thriving Jung Education Center, visits Kansas City for a Friday evening presentation Jan. 22 and Saturday workshop Jan. 23, entitled “Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life” also the title of his popular book. The programs are presented by Kansas City Friends of Jung and will be held at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St., KCMO 64112. Hollis says an event that brings on a mid-life shake-up typically occurs between the age of 35 and 70. At that point, we question our very identity. He sees this nearly inevitable point in life as a call from our psyche/soul/

inner-self/God to truly know our self. The journey stirs shock waves that can shake our foundation, relationships and life focus. He will address how challenging our values can lead to finding meaning in an often perplexing life passage. Hollis, also an analyst in private practice, is one of the most well-known and respected professionals in Jungian psychology and highly accessible to those who know little or nothing about Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. The cost for the Friday presentation is $20 and $65 for the Saturday workshop. Friends of Jung members receive discounts. Visit: www.kcjung.org

Kansas City Massage School Offers Asian Body Therapy Program KCFitnessLink’s yoga and massage school has expanded its Asian Body Therapy (ABT) Program to include Zen Shiatsu Therapy. While many massage schools offer limited training in Asian Body Therapy, KCFitnessLink is the only massage school in the area to offer a program that focuses purely on the holistic practices of ABT. The 650 Hour Zen Shiatsu Therapy program includes training in anatomy, pathology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shiatsu techniques, business and ethics. Graduates are eligible for massage certification through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or Asian Body Therapist certification from the American Organization for Bodywork

Therapies of Asia (AOBTA). Zen Shiatsu, also known as Masunaga Therapy, is a form of Asian Body Therapy that uses a deep, invigorating, style of massage where the practitioners leverage their entire body. It uses thumb, elbow, knee and palm pressure to energy channels or meridians. It reinforces principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is thought to stimulate the natural healing powers of the body, restoring balance and well-being. It works on the individual as a complete being not just the physical body but also on an emotional and/or mental level. KCFitnessLink is a registered school with the Yoga Alliance and International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). www.kcfitnesslink.com

Q&A with Terry Cole-Whittaker, Author of Live Your Bliss You say that the people of the world are having difficulties because they are not happy. What do you mean by this? People make their decisions based on their thoughts and emotions. Thoughts are creative and every action will have a reaction. When people are unhappy, meaning they are feeling bad, angry, resentful, or jealous then they will speak and act in a way that matches those thoughts and feelings. On the other hand, when people are feeling good, their actions will correspond. Happy people want others to be happy, whereas, unhappy people usually want others to also be unhappy. In your book you write that “we are the bliss of the universe.” What does this mean? The nature of each soul according to Eastern wisdom is eternity, knowledge, and bliss. Anyone can prove this by their own experience once they know how to

allow this quality to express through them. Because bliss is part of the nature of a soul, anyone can have as much bliss as she desires because it is not given to us by others — we have it and either stop it or allow it to flow abundantly.

How are all negative emotions destructive? Negative emotions are manufactured by us and not given to us by others or by the conditions in which we find ourselves. These kinds of destructive emotions stem from thoughts of past and future lack. They disempower us and make us feel miserable. There is never a need to feel miserable. It doesn’t create improvement. Holding the Vision, Manifesting the Dream By Kim Oursler The Venus Rising Institute of Shamanic Healing Arts is a manifestation of a vision held by Linda Star Wolf and her husband Brad Collins. Based in Isis Cove, North Carolina, the Venus Rising Institute is dedicated to healing, spiritual awakening, shamanic transformation and walking the spiral path of death and re-birth. Through the tool Shamanic Breathwork, people discover the shaman within and activate a deep healing process. Star Wolf grounded her visions into reality by recently publishing her book, Shamanic Breathwork: Journeying Beyond the Limits of Self. I spoke with Star Wolf and Brad. When did you first envision the Venus Rising Institute? Brad: When I was 17 years old and very active in my spiritual awakening, doing retreats with spiritual teachers from all over the world, I realized I wanted to have a place where people can move into the purpose and life of their souls.

Star Wolf: I think my drive really began when I was a teenager. I was studying to be a social worker and felt the system was boring, boxed in. I just really wanted to assist people in changing their lives. I had a growing desire to not only help others but to train people, knowing I could help people transform and grow very quickly. To really impact the world I was going to have to have a training program. So, 14 years ago, I developed the program currently available at Venus Rising.

Our work in the world is an outgrowth of who we are as souls and individuals.

as souls and individuals. Even if we weren’t together, we would both be acting as agents of change. How did you transform while creating the Venus Rising Institute? Brad: I became more of a man of substance, coming closer to my soul purpose. How do you surrender to the divine plan? Brad: Do everything in my power and leave the rest in Spirit’s hands.

Was there ever a time when you lost the vision?

Star Wolf: The truth is they (Spirit) come through and create me. Through my own breathwork journey, I was given the Spiral Path and the Five Cycles of Shamanic Consciousness. We are always somewhere on that spectrum of Birth, Death and Rebirth. Once I know where I am, I know what I need to do. Think about trees as they go through the seasons. They drop their leaves, run the sap, put down more roots… that’s how I live my life. I can choose to willingly go through these cycles or I can go through the kick ing-thra shing- s creaming method. I am more willing to be with the truth of what cycle I am in.

Star Wolf: No. We see people over and over again. Our main teaching is that we’re all on a spiral path. We don’t travel in a straight line but in a spiral orbit. We’ve proved that repeatedly by spiraling through our own death and rebirth processes.

The new book, Shamanic Breathwork: Journeying Beyond the Limits of Self, contains a whole chapter dedicated to the five Shamanic Cycles of Change. This is a map guiding us through the collapse of the old paradigm and into the new.

Brad: No. There have been times I’ve been discouraged or less hopeful, but both of us are vision holders. When we come up against a wall, we know there is a way through.

For us, one of the reasons it works so well is that we’re both agents of change. That vision, that essence of who we are, is why we came together. Our work in the world is an outgrowth of who we are

Reading Silent Spring in 2010 By Bethany Klug, DO “There once was a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings.” So begins Rachel Carson’s landmark book Silent Spring. Written in 1962, it awakened the world to the perils of using pesticides such as DDT indiscriminately. I read it for the first time recently. How little things have changed since 1962. DDT was developed and used during World War II to successfully kill mosquitoes spreading malaria and typhus. After World War II, DDT was promoted as an agricultural insecticide and its use became widespread. It is this use that Carson questioned in Silent Spring. She poetically cataloged the destruction to bird and fish species by massive aerial spraying campaigns. She questioned the widespread use of such dangerous chemicals without fully understanding their impact on humans and wildlife. The chemical industry and the US government spent massive amounts promoting the use of DDT and other pesticides, but allocated little to researching the impact on the environment. The same thing is now going on with genetically modified organisms, except the makers invoke patent law to prevent research into their effects. There’s an epilogue to the DDT story. Once its use became widespread, mosquitoes became resistant to it, much like microbes are be-

coming resistant to antibiotics today. Carson describes the near complete destruction of bird species, especially quail. Years ago I received a lot of teasing for nearly ruining my ex-husband’s career with my dry humor. A higher up was visiting and the significant others were invited along for dinner. This older man was quite a story teller and reminisced about how he and his buddies perched themselves on the running boards of a moving truck and shot all the quail they wanted. “There aren’t quail like that anymore,” he said wistfully. “Of course not,” I piped in, “You killed them all!” I now know the fate of the quail. Carson describes their near complete destruction in sprayed areas. Something irrevocable has occurred. I will never know birds, fish or other wildlife the way that man and his buddies did. The course of nature and human evolution has been changed forever. Carson describes how insects were controlled prior to DDT. Predators were introduced. Monoculture was avoided. Soil health was maintained. Humans worked with nature instead of warring against it. These same methods are used in organic agriculture today. Silent Spring helped birth the environmental movement. The public outcry over the book led to the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the

Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. These laws remain the pillars of U.S. environmental law. The uproar also led to the eventual banning of DDT for agricultural use. Its remaining use today to control disease-carrying insects is not without controversy. Carson also predicted harm to human health, particularly cancer. She expected the carcinogenicity of these new chemicals to be on par with radiation. Cancer, once limited to workers in certain industries, came to afflict the population in general with the introduction of the atomic bomb and pesticides like DDT. With the recent controversy over breast and prostate cancer screening, it’s helpful to remember that reducing exposure to pesticides and other carcinogens can reduce your cancer risk. Make your home, especially your bedroom, a refuge from them. Consuming minimally processed, organic food with an emphasis on quality fats and vegetables, as well as purified water reduces your pesticide intake and keeps your detoxification systems working to clear carcinogens.

Resolve to Evolve! By Carmelita Davis Beets Everyone makes New Year’s resolutions…usually about things they’ll stop doing or start doing. These resolutions are frequently somewhat superficial and aren’t usually about something that is truly life changing. They seem like a good idea at the time…but a few months later you’ve abandoned the cause and life goes on as it always has. This year, I challenge you to view resolutions a bit differently, by examining your heart and soul. Go inside yourself and look at who you really are now and where you are in your life. Then be very, very honest with yourself and envision who you’d like to become and where you’d like to go with it. What does the very depth of your heart tell you? What is your soul whispering to you? If you listen carefully, you’ll know what you really need to do.

ing inspirational novels and books, or talking to a trusted friend, counselor or clergy. Any or all of these things may lead you to dreams buried deep inside that long to be fulfilled. Listening to the voice within has always been important…but right now, it’s even more important than ever. That’s because our planet’s energy is changing every day—and it won’t be like it is now much longer. Our planet and its people are evolving. Those who become enlightened to their highest good will delight in our planet’s new direction. Those who refuse to evolve as people will be more miserable than ever. It comes down to this. Would you rather be the happiest you can be…or not? So many people are not willing or ready to change, and they’d rather be unhappy than open their hearts and minds. They’re fearful and so overwhelmed with problems that they aren’t

So often, we feel quiet nudges to lead our lives in a certain direction, or we hear soft urgings to follow a certain path. But, more often than not, we ignore those subtle messages and, instead, pay attention to the louder voices in our lives that tell us where to go and what to do. In this New Year, really listen and focus on the whispers of your heart and soul instead. And see where that takes you. Now, don’t get me wrong. I fully encourage you to eat more healthfully, lose weight if it would be healthy for you to do so, and by all means, quit smoking. But when you follow your inner guidance, becoming healthier will be a logical step along your path…not the end product. Evolving…

Parenting Parents By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. “You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your selfconfidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope; as old as your despair.” —Douglas MacArthur There comes a time in the cycle of life when the persons who had the responsibility for taking care of you in those dependent years of infancy, childhood and adolescence, now need you to step up and become the caretaker. Sometimes this happens gradually over time as memory begins to fade, physical skills deteriorate or body functions fail. Or this may happen suddenly because of a stroke, an acute life-threatening illness or accident. The result is that your role changes and you become the parent. A recent poll of baby boomers finds that 41% who have a living parent are providing care for them—financially, personally or both. Of those who are not caring for an aging parent, 37 percent say they expect to do so in the future; eight percent of boomers have parents living with them. Over half say they are concerned about being able to provide care. What does this mean for a person working, caring for a home and maybe children? The price can be high. There is the financial cost of losing time at work, resulting in lost wages and retirement benefits, in addition to the actual money spent for the care of parents. The physical toll can be severe, too. Caregivers report having one or more chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, at nearly twice the rate of all Americans. Of those who report their health has suffered, 91 percent report depression. The burnout rate of caregivers is very high. There are many books written on the subject. Some give much information on how to find resources such as the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Caring for Aging Parents by Linda Colvin Rhodes or How to Care for Aging Parents by Virginia Morris. There are support groups in local areas and online. Judith and Russell Dobson’s book Changing Roles: An Aging Parent’s Support Group also addresses this issue. Caring for elderly parents can reopen the family’s dysfunctions. Sibling rivalry can be rekindled. Some children step forward taking more responsibility while others remain distant and uninvolved. This can create resentment. Some parents were negligent, critical, even abusive. What happens when this parent begins to fail and needs the care of their child (children)? Grace Lebow and Barbara Kane, both social workers and founders of a network for aging

parents and their caretakers, address this issue. In Coping With Your Difficult Older Parent, they describe dealing with a dependent parent, or one with negative, self-centered or controlling behaviors. This is an excellent book with many practical applications. The adult child will find the trauma of their childhood brought up again. This may put them in a position of resenting the person once more as anger, emotional pain and consequences of abuse resurface. The person is faced with the moral dilemma of dealing with this aging parent, who is now quite harmless and very dependent, needing them for the caretaking they did not give. Many people I know have done an amazing job of facing their own pain and fears, working them through enough to care for the parent(s), ready to forgive the pain inflicted on them as a child. Caretakers are at high risk for burnout. Self-care is of the utmost importance. Depression, physical and emotional exhaustion and illness are predictable problems that need to be faced. Difficult decisions have to be made about living arrangements, physical care and financial matters. The daily physical and emotional demand is high. Counseling, support of family, friends and community are helpful and essential. I think MacArthur’s words ring true for both the aging parent and the caregiver. It is ultimately up to each person to create the life condition that supports self-confidence, hope and wellness in this difficult journey. A Passion for Art A teacher guides a troubled youth to find his passion. Like many troubled teenagers, a combination of boredom, lack of direction and poor choices brought 15-year-old Allan Winkler to a turning point. Attending high school in Chicago in 1968, Allan admits he made poor choices in friends. An aspiring musician, his first encounter with criminal activity began when his new friends picked him up for a jam session. On the way, they stopped in an alley behind a music store. His friends jumped out of the car and told Allan to sit in the driver’s seat— they’d be right back. While Allan waited, his new friends went in and robbed the store. He was initiated into the band as their getaway driver. His choice of friends and lack of motivation in school were leading him on a self-destructive path. Allan’s indifference to school was especially strong in his English class; he tended to sleep the whole period. One day the teacher, Mr. Gragg, asked him to stay after class. Mr. Gragg invited Allan to a concert that evening. When the teacher picked him up there were other students in the car. Allan says, “I went to the first Frank Zappa concert in Chicago. Mr. Gragg knew I was in a band so it was a very exciting night for me. I also got a chance to meet some nice kids who weren’t into crime and stealing. They were good people.”

Allan and his exacto.

About his artwork, Allan says,” There is more to the here and now than automobiles and spread sheets, can openers and day care. There is love, there is feeling, the smell of the night, the joy of small lives well-lived.” Suddenly Allan started paying attention during class. The English teacher introduced Allan to Henry David Thoreau. When he read Walden, the theme resonated with Allan. In Walden, the central theme revolves around the premise that following unconventional dreams will lead to unconventional success. Thoreau writes, “I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Thoreau affected Allan deeply. “Walden changed my life, my way of thinking,” Allan says. When Mr. Gragg discovered Allan’s interest in art, he arranged for a room next to the art department to become Allan’s personal art studio. During his time in high school Allan was allowed to work as an artist. Allan isn’t sure what Mr. Gragg saw in him that caused him to reach out, but he is nonetheless grateful. “He saw something in me. And he was an amazing teacher. Mr. Gragg saw the outsiders, those who didn’t

fit in, and gave them a place to meet and feel accepted. He was all about helping people,” Allan says. For four years in high school Allan created art. Although it changed his course he still didn’t know what to do with his future. One day a representative from the Kansas City Art Institute visited his studio and offered him a scholarship. After high school, Allan moved to Kansas City to study art. Forty years after an English teacher took notice of a troubled youth, Allan is still a working artist and musician. His talents are varied. According to Allan, “My talents flow from a deep and winding river source, whose branches seem to have no limit. Besides cutting paper and metal images, I am a ceramic sculptor, a painter, a quilt maker, a clothes designer, a batik artist. I have played drums for jazz groups and rock-and-roll bands, acted in plays, made prize-winning films and videotapes, taught art in college, written articles and lengthy literary journals.” The inner gem that one teacher helped to harvest continues to grow. Allan Winkler is in a new band, The Finsters. They are playing March 27 at the R Bar. You can view his artwork at www.winklerart.com. Jill Dutton is publisher of Evolving. Holistic Helpful Hints for 2010 Albert Einstein once said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” In my holistic Internal Medicine practice, I believe in miracles and I see them happen every day. The holistic principles that I embrace in my practice include: 1) Know each person as an individual, 2) Get to the root of the problem, rather than just treat symptoms, 3) Develop partnerships with each person on their journey to optimal health, and 4) Remember that love is our most powerful medicine. Health equals balance. It can be challenging to bring a healthy balance of all four aspects of your being: its physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components. To bring holistic health to your life, explore your strengths and weaknesses. Challenge and ask yourself the following questions to explore each aspect of yourself. These are the physical questions to consider: Sleep: Am I sleeping regularly and restfully? Do I get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day? Nutrition: Am I eating fresh, whole foods and minimizing artificial sweeteners and chemically altered foods? Do I maintain a healthy diet, high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fiber—low in fat, sugar and caffeine? Is my daily water intake adequate (at least ½ ounce/pound of body weight) and purified or filtered? Exercise: Am I being active at least 3 times a week in a meaningful activity? Do I maintain physically challenging goals? Am I strong, flexible and have good endurance? General Health: Am I free of chronic ailments or diseases or any drug or alcohol dependencies? Do I nurture and feel a strong sense of appreciation for my body? January 2010 14

Financial: Can I meet my financial needs and desires? These are the mental questions to consider: Career: Does my work use my greatest talents? Do I have specific goals in my personal and professional life? Is my work enjoyable and fulfilling? Mental Outlook: Do I believe it is possible to change? Do I have the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time? Am I willing to take risks or make mistakes in order to succeed? Are creative activities a regular part of my work or leisure? Life-long Learning: Do I challenge myself to learn new things regularly? Do I expand my horizons with varied interests and exploration of ideas? Am I inspired by a driving enthusiasm about life?

Health equals balance. It can be challenging to bring a healthy balance of all four aspects of your being; its physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components. These are the emotional questions to consider: Home Environment: Do I surround myself with people who support, inspire and energize me? How can I contribute to a positive environment in my home? Relationships: Do I express my needs, wants and desires in my relationships and encourage my partner to do the same? Can I freely express sadness and cry? Am I aware of and able to express anger safely and nonviolently? Have I demonstrated the willingness to commit to a marriage or comparable long-term relationship? Do I have one or more close friends to whom I can talk openly?

be in the present moment? Do I have happiness and joy in my life? Can I adjust attitudes as a result of learning from painful experiences? Do I give myself more supportive messages than critical messages in the course of the day? Relaxation and Play: Do I take time to let down and relax? Do I take time for spontaneous activities and time to play? These are the spiritual questions to consider: Life’s Purpose: Is my job or life’s work connected to life’s purpose, to what I feel I am meant to be doing in this lifetime? Do I listen to my intuition and

make time for prayer and reflection? Attitude Toward Life and Self: Do I enjoy high self-esteem? Do I engage in meditation and prayer to understand my feelings and thoughts? Am I free from a strong need for control and the need to be right? Can I let go of attachment to specific outcomes and embrace uncertainty? Can I be gentle with myself? Oneness with God/Source: Do I actively commit time to my spiritual life? Do I have faith in God, a higher power or the universe? Do I have the ability to forgive others as well as myself? Am I grateful and express gratitude for the blessings in my life? Do I experience unconditional love? I wish you many blessings on your path to optimal health and wellness. Following holistic principles can help you achieve balance into your life.

Homeward Bound My Incredible Journey By Linda Laskowski So, how does one begin his or her career in holistic/alternative health care? Well, either you are born into such a career path or you start looking for solutions to problems that traditional medicine cannot solve. Mine was the latter. Even after 25 years as a Gravity Flow Colon Therapist I chuckle at the thought when someone asks me, “How did you choose to become a colon therapist?” I tell them, it was not something that they offered on career day at high school. It just reached out and grabbed me—by the butt. I had a corporate job, a downsizer for a large corporation. I did my job well and earned an outstanding salary with bonuses, trips, cars and a life of sheer comfort. I lived the typical American dream come true in the 80s—husband, kids, money, security, family. In less than an hour, under a surgeon’s knife, my life changed forever and I have never been so grateful for his ineptness. Six months later, I sat in the specialist’s office as he gave me my grim forecast. “Linda, if you are very careful and do exactly what I tell you to do, you may have one-to one and a half years left.” With my head spinning and my hands grasping at arm rests, I thought of my babies at home, the tons of stuff I still wanted to do with them; so basically, I refused to hear what he was saying to me, and I refused the treatment. Unknowingly, I was already listening to that voice inside, screaming: “HEAR ME!” I left his office and sat in the lobby, trying to put some reason to all of this. I noticed a paper sitting not too far from me and I reached for it. PhenomeNEWS... I had never seen a paper like this and started to page through it, first slowly then with growing anticipation, not sure what I was looking for since everything was foreign to me: acupuncture, Reiki Masters, Iridologists. Who are these people? I finally rested on an article written by Bonnie Miller, a Woods Gravity Flow Colon Therapist. I was intrigued as I read the article explaining the importance of flushing your colon. I located a phone and called Ms. Miller and she answered immediately. I told her I had just read her article and I had so many questions. She happened to have at that moment a cancellation and

plenty of time to answer all my questions. As I slowly slid into a chair and noticed all her certificates and pictures, I began to relax in the presence of her calm and knowing way. I told her my plight and she just waved a hand this way and then that way, smiling all the while. She looked at me and said, “Don’t worry Linda, first things first; we are going to clean up those eyes of yours.” My eyes, what do my eyes have to do with my health challenge? To Bonnie, my eyes were non- readable, too dark, toxic and full of sludge. Unknowingly, I had begun my education and the start of my new life. My first journey was back to health, which was difficult because I was never there to begin with. As I walked down this path, I started to realize how much I was simply surviving life and how much I relied on good genes handed down by my parents. So, Bonnie introduced me to iridology, she explained every step as she looked into my eyes to find all the weaknesses we would be working on using her herbal potions— that to me looked so fascinating , however so foreign. I still was not yet totally convinced that lying on a table, an instrument inserted into my rectum with water flushing in and out, was going to make a difference. However a small tiny voice inside of me told me to stay, listen, learn and my life would come back to me. I signed up for the package deal and we began our walk together. After the second colonic, Bonnie started to educate me in the emotional reasons for my health challenges. She had remarked since the first meeting “how angry you are”. This confused me greatly, what did anger have to do with me having less than two years to live? I was a good patient and took my herbal preparations faithfully. I started to sleep better and my appetite returned slowly. I could last the entire day, physically, and I was delighted to go back to work, part-time. At this time, I started to realize my personality was changing and I did not know why. Another appointment with Bonnie would supply all the answers; again, as she explained that as I cleaned out the sludge that had built up in all my organs my energy was changing. I was feeling lighter and brighter and it was starting. Others commented on the new me that was emerging.

Synchronicity followed me at every turn. It was almost magical. Teachers appeared. Books fell off shelves. Opportunities opened up. My job required a sort of edge that, if maintained, would help cut the departments financial losses, get the work done and show a profit. For reasons not fully clear to me ,at this time, my edge was leaving and I was finding winwin situations for the employees, instead of layoff notices on Friday. Bonnie suggested on my 4th visit that I enlist the aid of a “rage therapist”. What was rage therapy and why did I need rage therapy? I was sick not crazy. However, I took her advice and within a week was introduced to my first rage session. The therapist laid out the drill and I reluctantly followed. Four hours later, I was exhausted from beating poles with nerf bats. I knelt on the floor, soaking wet with sweat and tears, and felt absolutely wonderful and eager to continue with my next session. After my rage therapy sessions, my colonics became more effective in releasing toxins. I was back at my job full time; though, I was enjoying it less and less. One night as I lay on the table, Bonnie noticed how distant I was and asked if I was feeling well. I told her I could not do what my employers expected of me any longer, I had changed too much. Bonnie had known after the second appointment who I was, she just patiently waited until I got there myself. Yes, I left my job, and began my career as a Gravity Flow Colon Therapist. However, I was not done with major changes. My husband had enjoyed my job, my salary and most of all the benefits. He left shortly after I finished my training requirements. Alone, with two small children and no family support, I started my new business. Synchronicity followed me at every turn. It was almost magical. Teachers appeared. Books fell off shelves. Opportunities opened up. Six years later, busy building my business and raising my children, I

broke one of the cardinal rules of business and involved myself with a client. We will be married 18 years in June. He is truly heaven sent. His herbal knowledge of both Western and Chinese medicines, coupled with flower essences and homeopathy, has kept us and his many clients healthy. Nine years ago, we transferred to Kansas City. In some ways Missouri is so different from Michigan we were convinced we had entered a foreign country. It is now home to us and we are ever so grateful to be in such a safe place. Holistic means the whole of the self, body, mind and soul. The surgeon and all my angels along the way have helped me to realize I was not whole in many ways. I refused for years to feel the tap on my shoulder and the little voice saying….. “Linda, it is time for a change, your heart is heavy and you are unhappy.” I have learned to listen to my heart and only my heart, which is where I hear the voice that has guided me throughout the last 25 years. Listen and hear your voice, it is waiting for you. And, when you do, you will know you have embarked on an incredible journey and you are on your path— homeward bound. You ARE the Healer By Dr. Paul Schaal True healing comes from within. There are incredible healing techniques available to us, and they all invariably tap into our own inner wisdom to initiate the healing strategy needed for our highest and best good. “Quantum Healing” (QH) is such a system of healing. It is derived from Network Spinal Analysis, with the addition of Quantum Touch. QH is a drug-free, hands-on system of healing that can transform your life. Since my graduation from chiropractic college in 1978, I have taken many roads to determine the best chiropractic technique, the best healing modality, the treatment technique that could offer people more than just relief from or correction for their physical pain. It is now known that there is so much more involved in a person’s pain than just the physical. Many experts believe that as high as 80 percent of the people suffering from pain or disease have a deepseated emotional cause for their suffering. I have been certified in different acupuncture techniques by three of the country’s leading teachers. I also hold a degree in clinical nutrition. These “pieces” to the health care puzzle provided me with an enormous amount of additional tools to use in my practice. Still, there was something missing. It was when I had a personal and very profound experience with treatment care for my serious lower spinal disc herniation that I felt I had found the answers. Just short of opting for spinal surgery, I began receiving care from a Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) practitioner. That experience was miraculous unto itself. But when I sought another “healer” for Reiki sessions and yet another for Quantum Touch treatment care, all during my NSA care, the “magic” occurred. I experienced a powerful sense of wellbeing long before my back pain began to resolve. I was handling life’s stress much better, my energy was heightened and I became aware of and enjoy each and every day more. I was at peace. To be at peace does not mean January 2010 16

Trust in Yourself I experienced a powerful sense of well-being long before my back pain began to resolve. I was handling life’s stress much better, my energy was heightened and I became aware of and enjoy each and every day more. to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. Needless to say, I have avoided surgery and now have my life back. Let me tell you about Jaclynn. I first met 3-year-old Jaclynn and her mother, Edie, at our office as they attended our demonstration workshop. Edie was looking for some hope for Jaclynn, some treatment that was

available which might give Jaclyn a better chance at leading a life that other children and parents take for granted. Jaclynn was born with Down’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder that has little, if any, effective treatments through traditional medical protocol. She was also diagnosed with a heart defect as well as “lax ligament syndrome” of both hips, a condition which hampered her ability to simply

stand, much less walk, without her hips constantly dislocating. Traditional medical treatments were relatively ineffective for this beautiful child. Jaclynn’s contagious smile and laughter was and is a blessing to our office and anyone fortunate enough to meet her. Edie was not looking for treatment care that would or could help with the Down’s Syndrome, or even the heart problem. She was looking for something that could strengthen Jaclynn’s hips, something that would allow her to stand and possibly walk unassisted. She felt that there was not much help “out there” for Down’s Syndrome, and the heart ailment was going to require future surgery. I explained to Edie how Quantum Healing treats through the Central Nervous System (CNS) (brain, spinal cord and nerves), and that by improving the function of the CNS, Jaclynn’s entire body would benefit. Keep in mind that the CNS controls, coordinates and regulates everything that goes on in the body—everything! We began treatments for Jaclynn and in less than a month, Edie began noticing improvements in Jaclynn’s ability to “bear-crawl” and stand. Something else incredibly was also happening. Both her oral and gross motor functions were improving. Jaclynn was beginning to speak more clearly and to use more words. Today, I am so thrilled to say that Jaclynn is walking and running normally and without assistance. Edie stated that when her therapists saw her “they were in tears” with excitement. To call Quantum Healing a miracle is incorrect. The human body is the miracle! To be able to tap into the wisdom within is the key. QH has allowed Jaclynn’s healing wisdom within to reorganize, rewire and literally upgrade her hard drive. How far can QH take you? The sky’s the limit! spiritual horoscopes

Spiritual Horoscope for January By Aluna Michaels, M.A. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! You’ll be blessed with mental clarity and insightful solutions to problems. You could make new friends who might help find a job that really suits your creativity. People at work, whom you view as superiors, will accept you as a peer and help you get promoted. In general, you’ll be in the right place at the right time, so sit back and watch it all happen! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Your self-esteem is high! You’re attracting people who recognize your spiritual light and unique gifts. This could mean a new job, promotion or raise. You could start a new relationship, or your current one will be reinvigorated. Continue your meditation practice even though things are good. Make time for your soul regardless of how fun life seems. Your spiritual connection makes life even better! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Jupiter is the planet of abundance and happiness and it has moved into your sign for a one year stay! The last time this happened was twelve years ago, so meditate on gratitude for your accomplishments over those years. Also, use your powers of visualization to “plan” what projects you’d like to begin at this point in your life. You can heal issues about health, self-love, finances and relationships! Aries (March 21 – April 19) Your dreams can come true and you can have the life you want! First, however, you must clear out old disappointments, especially related to romantic relationships

and business partnerships. Forgive people and situations where you felt you gave more than you received. Your heart will be clear and open to attract partners with a higher consciousness that match your level of spirituality. Just let the past be in the past. It doesn’t have to affect your present! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ve probably had insights about how hard you can be on yourself. Keep making it a priority to treat yourself with gentle kindness. Let people close to you know how you’re trying to love yourself, so they can be alert when you fall back into destructive patterns. These patterns could relate to overworking, overeating or overspending. You could have a bonus coming at work. You can be rewarded for good work without pushing yourself! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Relationships are pushing your buttons! If partnered, you’re at a crossroads. Will you allow deeper intimacy or will you let past issues of lack of trust inhibit more closeness? If single, meditate on how your cynicism is keeping you isolated. Either way, focus on healing the past through meditation. At work, things will be much easier. Maybe an unexpected promotion or job offer will boost your career confidence! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Meditation and quiet reflection will reveal ways you’re still burdened by childhood/ family patterns. Ask your spouse/partner or trusted close friend how you react in old ways that don’t fit present circumstances. Breaking emotional dysfunction is one of your spiritual tasks this lifetime. You’ll be

rewarded with feeling lighter inside and much happier! You’ll feel you can trust others. Avenues of prosperity will also open! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) This is a month of humility. How important is it to be right? Meditate on your stubbornness and how it affects relationships. Also, when you think you know everything, it’s harder for the Universe to solve your problems, since your receptivity is blocked. Softening your opinions will help love flow in your life. You’ll also find your finances flow better, since your heart is open to all types of divine good. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You’ll have improvements in relationships; and if single, you could be starting a new one. But in order to enjoy your good karma, you’ll have to work on self-esteem. Wonderful people like you because YOU’RE wonderful—believe that! Keep “brainwashing” yourself with positive affirmations. Thank others for compliments rather than brushing them off. You’ve been your own worst enemy; now be your own best friend! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Relationships are at a high point! But, like your Virgo friends, please make sure you are loving yourself as well as being loved by others. Sometimes Libras only feel valuable when people are paying attention to them. You are lovable just because you exist! As you meditate on this, you’ll be better able to survive the ups and downs of relationships, since human love is inconsistent. Cultivate a spiritual unconditional

love for yourself that never wavers! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You’ll have many opportunities this year to open your heart to new relationships, heal current wounds and overcome any issues with depression or negativity. But what can hold you back is resentments from the past. Meditate on releasing old hurts, and ponder how those situations helped you grow in a positive way. You’ll transform your attitude and subconscious thoughts, which will draw happier people and circumstances to you! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Think clearly about finances. Create a budget that allows for “fun” spending as well as practical purchases. You’ll rebel if the plan is too strict, so incorporate wiggle room. Sort out your stuff in your house. You might find you already own items you thought you needed to buy. Also, get rid of old things to make room for new prosperity. Examine life goals and see if your daily life is helping you progress toward them or not. Change habits or attitudes so you can achieve your dreams! January 28 The Wounding & the Healing ~ An Astrological Look at Our “Hot Spots” 730pm We are all wounded in some way. We carry the memory of this wound in our minds, bodies & spirits. It has an influence over what types of experiences we create over & over again so that we have the opportunity to heal & transform. The placement of the planet, Pluto, in our astrological birth charts will define our individual wounds. In clarifying this “hot spot” in our lives, we are able to see how we can use this energy in a productive way. This class will examine those areas of our lives that can become obsessions & "issues" we have to deal with, whether they originated in our childhood or adult lives or even from past lives. We will discuss ways that we can use this energy to its highest potential. This workshop requires all birth data, including date, time &

place of birth, when you make your reservation. Cost of $25 includes extensive handouts & natal chart. Space is limited to 9 participants, a reservation & a non-refundable deposit of $10 is required before January 25th to hold your space & ensure there are plenty of handouts.
