Dear Friend, Each new year holds the power of possibility. There’s a chance for reflection on the past year, redemption and a time to start anew. Each January I am infused with enthusiasm, hope and the energy of looking toward what is possible. It’s also possible to start anew each day – and allow the entire year to be infused with a fervor for reflection, renewal and rebirth. I believe the key to keeping this inspiration on a daily basis is achieved through balance. Balance an apple and a banana on a scale and the side with the apple effortlessly raises the banana. Does the apple have more nutritional value than the banana? No, it

simply weighs more. In a similar way we determine balance in our lives. What we value most may not be where we devote most of our time. Instead, we place value on the responsibilities that weigh the most: usually job or family. As with the apple and banana, even though our job may place more pressure on our time constraints, our personal time is equally valuable. The seasons also play a vital role in balance. They have an essential purpose in the ever-constant renewal of the earth. Spring represents birth, summer is growth, fall is the harvest, and winter is rest. What is interesting is that our bodies follow the same schedule. This bodily reaction to the seasons is natural, but friction occurs when we fight these involuntary responses. Rather than feeling guilty about a sluggish winter, we should value this rest period and acknowledge the renewed strength it will bring in the spring.

NAET Allergy Elimination

Kansas City Healing Project Turns Six The Kansas City Healing Project recently celebrated it’s Sixth Anniversary. The not-for-profit organization was organized in 1995 to provide energy healing sessions for cancer patients in the Kansas City area. John Hoefer, a graduate of the Core Star Energy Healing School, knew of the benefits that energy healing sessions have and organized the project to provide an avenue for connecting healers and cancer patients who were currently in or recently completed their treatments. John was joined by fellow Core Star graduates over the years and collectively have provided over 1,000 healing sessions to about 350 individuals. They first started working at Unity Church of Overland Park twice a month in September, 2005. Soon they had one office in Mission, KS at the Core Energy Healing School, where all the healers received their training. In 2009, they started working with patients at Midwest Cancer Care at Menorah Hospital where they also have a room for healing sessions. They have been working with 10 – 15 patients a month at Menorah since then. The staff at Midwest Cancer Care sends surveys to all the patients they work with there. The survey participants are asked about their experience with the healing sessions and also to rate their pain, fatigue and anxiety before and after the sessions. A summary of the results of the surveys show a significant improvement in the patients levels of each of these quality of life indicators (on a 1 – 10 scale). Pain Fatigue Anxiety

Clients have given them comments like the following: “Having an energy healing session gave me a sense of deep peace and concentration. I felt like my energies were balanced and I felt more grounded” D.S. “At the time of my diagnosis, I felt that my body had somehow betrayed me. Working with the Kansas City Healing Project enabled me to forgive my body and taught me to nurture and trust it and respect its own innate ability to heal. I felt like I learned how to get out of the way and let my body do its own miraculous work." T.E. “I could not have gotten through Chemo without their support. Relaxation is very important to survival. Energy Healing was my choice to help me relax, sleep and gain energy for the next three days of chemo. I found the more relaxed I became, the easier the process of chemo went.” N. B. If you or a loved one is in treatment for cancer and would like to experience the benefits of Energy Healing, please give John Hoefer (Director) a call at 816718-6358 to schedule a session. For more information visit their website at www.KansasCityHealingProject.org They have been offering sessions on a donation basis in order for all to be able to afford the benefits. They have been able to offer the sessions on a donation basis because of the generous support of the Deramus Foundation and other individuals in the area. If you are interested in supporting this effort, they are a 501c3 tax exempt organization and would be glad to discuss how you might be able to help out.

Let’s Get Naked—by Heidi Alfrey

Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D.

Insight Vs Eyesight

Healthier New You for the New Year

...An Interview with David Westbrook

I

A

s I’ve begun this Naked Movement, I find many people are uncomfortable with the word “Naked”, perhaps because of the immediate connection with physical nakedness. Although appreciation of one’s body temple is essential for evolved living, the main focus of this column and these interviews is to invite my interviewees to discover their “naked soul” and how to “live nakedly” with their clothes on. Do you think it would be easier to “Get Naked” if you did not have eyesight? I’ve wondered this and learned some very revealing life lessons from my dear friend David Westbrook, a blind man, who actually “sees” quite well. David, not being as distracted by all the things in this “outer world,” has the opportunity, he would call it a “gift”, to have spiritual vision that sighted people would overlook. (Yes, the pun is intended.) I call this phenomenon “insight not eyesight.” David, now a 62 year old man, first recognized the diminishing of his eyesight at the age of 12, by the time he was 17 his eyesight was gone, and his insights began. For the next 7 years, blindness painfully forced David to strip off the story of a sighted man, that “had it all together.” Everything he knew about his sighted capabilities had to be released, something new within him was being born. David had to “Get Naked.” Crises gives us a choice, move into it or run from it. John Bradshaw writes, “The only out is through,” and young Dave Westbrook chose to go through. He had to feel his way from the unknown to the known. In this new dark world, he felt exposed and vulnerable, experiencing abject terror and awkwardness. How is it possible for any of us to understand life circumstances when things are so overwhelming? These are the moments when we have to seek something deeper, something more true, something more naked. Marianne Williamson tells us that “It is our Light , not our darkness that most frightens us” and this could not have been more true than it was for David. As he stopped resisting this incredible physical challenge and slowly became more interested in “evolving with” what life had presented to him, a deeper level of David, a “seeing into his soul” began to emerge. He continued to listen to his emotions rather than the limiting story and validate his legitimacies instead of his inadequacies. Blindness quickly taught him what many go their graves not learning-how to ask for help and receive it. (OK, it probably helped that all the young ladies at college wanted to escort him across campus) For 40 years plus, from that place of gratitude, he gives and gives and gives. David never turns down an opportunity to assist anyone who needs support because of vision impairment. He is clear that the best way to appreciate the tremendous assis-

tance and encouragement he received when he needed it is to be there for others. In his words, “I strive to help people adapt to change in pursuit of their boldest vision. Above all else, I want to help others see. My life’s work is devoted to the capacity to adapt, to change, to grow.” David’s current passionate purpose is his work as Chief Strategy Officer at Children’s Mercy Hospital. One of my favorite outings with him was attending the Alpha Point Association for the Blind’s Annual Fundraiser, Dining in the Dark. This enlightening event invites us mere sighted mortals to eat dinner in the pitch black dark (thank heavens for aprons) to heighten our understanding of blindness. After we are all carefully escorted into ballroom without a speck of light and seated, (I’d immediately stuck my finger in someone’s butter dish, now it was my turn to feel awkward), David who was honored that night announces with a chuckle on a loud microphone, “Welcome to my world.” David, I am honored that I’ve experienced some of your world. my vision has greatly improved by knowing you...what a profound Teacher you are for me and so many others, thanks for “getting naked” with me. You remind us all that it is often darkest before the dawn and to not quit before the miracle, which is the recognition of our inherently powerful authentic self. The important things in life cannot be seen with the eye, only felt with the heart. ... The Little Prince Heidi Alrey holds a Masters degree in Counseling and is a Unity minister, serving as one of the ministers at Unity Temple on the Plaza. She has a spiritual counseling practice and teaches many lively classes that remind men and women "who they are" and the "power within." n the 21st century, two things have become increasingly apparent: First, we are exposed to a more complex array of toxic compounds in our air, water, and food than ever before. Second, it has been recognized that an individual’s ability to detoxify or biotransform and eliminate toxic substances is of critical importance to overall health. Understanding toxicity and taking practical steps to improve biotransformation are essential and critical pieces in any integrative approach to your health and well-being. There is persuasive evidence that even low-level toxic exposure is related to a variety of chronic health conditions, including hormone imbalance, degenerative diseases, headaches, chronic sinusitis, fibromyalgia, fatigue, etc. From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, our body is constantly exposed to toxic chemicals. If you are not eating organic foods; with your morning cereal, you may be exposing yourself to pesticides, and the milk may contain hormone and antibiotic residues. Cosmetics can contain bismuth and lead, while many of the plastic containers are made of phthalates, a harmful plastic softener. It’s an ongoing onslaught causing more health problems than we ever realized. Harmful toxins are present in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. The evidence is overwhelming so today’s question is no longer whether or not we are toxic, but rather, how do we get rid of these toxins? Detoxification refers to the removal of toxic substances from the body. The human body has four main pathways that remove toxic buildup. These include the feces, urine, sweat and breath. Some toxins get eliminated directly by some of these pathways, many of them need to be transformed into water-soluble compounds, while still others have to be changed into complex molecules. These transformations occur in the body’s most important detoxification organ, the liver. Other organ systems involved in detoxification include the kidneys, gastrointestinal system and the skin. For the most part, the human body does a pretty good job of detoxing itself. However, as people battle greater amounts of environmental toxins and encounter life stressors, it is possible to overwhelm our built-in detoxification systems. The toxins can remain in our bodies, where they can accumulate to dangerous levels. There are 2 avenues to protect yourself. The first is to minimize your intake of toxins and the second is to enhance elimination of toxins from your system. Some ways to minimize your intake are: • Eating organic foods, especially dairy and animal products, and the following produce: apples, pears, grapes, strawberries, carrots, potatoes, and lettuces. • Drink purified, filtered water for drinking and cooking and get a shower head filter for bathing. Drink enough water,

about 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight per day. • Use natural cleaners, detergents, soaps and make-up. • Avoid monosodium glutamate (MSG), textured vegetable protein (TVP), yeast extracts, sodium nitrite, aspartame (Nutrasweet), saccharin, and sucralose (Splenda). These ingredients contain potentially dangerous neurotoxins and/ or hormone disruptors. • Avoid contamination from lead based paints and asbestos containing compounds that are in older homes and buildings. Some ways to enhance elimination and protect yourself now are: • Exercise regularly and sweat; if you don’t sweat, consider using a sauna. • Protect your nervous system with omega-3 oils, antioxidants, trace minerals and vitamin D. • Drink plenty of water as mentioned above to aid the kidneys in flushing out toxins. • Effective detoxification is based on a scientific understanding of the body’s natural cleansing process. Safe and effective herbs and nutrients are important. The program should be gradual and gentle and work with the body’s own detoxification ability and normal patterns of elimination. When looking for a cleansing program, make sure it contains a blend of natural fibers, full spectrum liver support and a natural laxative without herbal stimulants like senna and cascara. If you would like assistance on your optimal wellness journey with cleansing and getting to the root of the problem, come and partner NOW, at our Nurturing Optimal Wellness practice with me and my staff. Eating Well in Kansas City Food News The Vegetarian Resource Group Asked in a 2011 National Poll:

How Often Do Americans Eat Vegetarian Meals? & How Many Adults Are Vegan in the U.S.? With numerous groups pushing Meatless Mondays, Tofurky Tuesdays, or other campaigns to cut back on meat one meal or day per week, The Vegetarian Resource Group wondered how often Americans are eating vegetarian meals. In order to find an estimate, VRG commissioned Harris Interactive® to conduct a national telephone poll. Seventeen percent of Americans stated that they "don't eat meat, fish, seafood, or poultry at many of my meals (but less than half the time)" and 16% don't eat these foods at more than half of their meals (but not all the time). Thus, 1/3 (33%) of the country are eating vegetarian meals a significant amount of the time (in addition to vegetarians)! This is certainly good news for companies producing vegetarian foods. No wonder why so many restaurants have added vegetarian options. In a 2008 Vegetarian Resource Group national telephone survey, 40% said when eating out they often order a dish without meat, fish or fowl. For those of you trying to get a handle on the population very interested in vegetarian foods, though not vegetarian, it appears to be 30% - 40% of the country. How Many Vegetarians Are There? In this survey, approximately 5% of the country say that they never eat meat, fish, seafood, or poultry. About half of these vegetarians are also vegan; that is they also don't eat dairy or eggs. Note

that we had respondents select that "I never eat meat, fish, seafood, or poultry" or "I never eat meat, fish, seafood, poultry, dairy, or eggs." Because we use the word "never" and give the definition rather than having respondents self define, our numbers may be lower than other polls. We also did not ask about honey. Methodology This survey was conducted by Harris Interactive by telephone within the United States on behalf of the Vegetarian Resource Group between March 30 and April 3, 2011 among a nationwide cross section of 1,010 adults (aged 18 and over). Figures for age, sex, race, education, region, number of adults in household, and number of telephone lines were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. In theory, with probability samples of this size, one could say with 95 percent certainty that the results for the overall sample have a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. There are several other possible sources of error in all polls or surveys that are probably more serious than theoretical calculations of sampling error. They include refusals to be interviewed (e.g., nonresponse), question wording and question order, and weighting. It is impossible to quantify the errors that may result from these factors.

48% Say they eat meat, fish, or poultry at all my meals. (The remainder didn't know, refused to answer, or said none of the above.) Never Eat Meat, Fish, Seafood, Or Poultry Male Female 5% 6% One meal per week 2% 5% One Day per week 13% 20% Many of my meals, but less than half the time 15% 17% At more than half my meals 2% 2% Never (though not vegan) 3% 2% Never eat meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs Don't Eat Meat, Fish, Seafood, Or Poultry At More Than Half Of My Meals 16% Total 15% Male 17% Female 17% Northeast 16% Midwest 17% South 13% West 15% Republican 15% Democratic Maybe this is an issue where we can get Democrats and Republicans to agree and work together (over dinner). Six percent each of Republicans and Democrats also didn't eat meat, fish, seafood, or poultry, at one meal per week. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or

fowl. Vegans are vegetarians who also don't use other animal products such as dairy or eggs. The Vegetarian Resource Group is a non-profit which educates the public about vegetarian and vegan diets. It publishes Vegetarian Journal and the book Vegans Know How to Party, offers two $5,000 college scholarships to high school seniors who have promoted vegetarianism, maintains a national restaurant guide at [ http://www.vrg.org/ restaurant/index.php ], and sponsors an e-mail list for parents of vegetarians [ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ vrgparents/ ]. Eating Well in Kansas City Food Conscious—by Bethany Klug, D.O. Create a Culture of Health and Wellness

I

f I could wave a magic wand and change one thing to improve our personal, community and planetary health what would it be? Jeffrey Bland, PhD, a researcher and thought leader in nutrition medicine posed this question to a panel of physician pioneers in the budding field of lifestyle medicine. The term “lifestyle medicine” popped up on my radar just this year and I like it. It describes what I do better than “alternative” or “integrative medicine,” terms I choose not to use. Garry Egger and collaborators define lifestyle medicine as the application of environmental, behavioral, medical and motivational principles to the management of lifestyle-related health problems in a clinical setting. The discipline involves the therapeutic use of lifestyle interventions predominantly in the management of chronic disease. It is not meant to be an alternative to conventional clinical practice, but rather a means to address the health challenges posed by changes to lifestyle in the past three to four decades.

This gives me hope that a New Medicine may be closer than we think. I long for a day when there is just medicine, rather than conventional versus osteopathic versus naturopathic, oriental, homeopathic and other forms of natural medicine all competing for dominance. Lifestyle medicine could be the bridge that helps us collectively realize that it is far more beneficial to cultivate health than patch people up with pharmaceuticals and surgery once health has been compromised. Although I don’t use “alternative” to describe my practice of medicine, it is alternative because it is not the norm. If I had a magic wand, I would create a culture of health and wellness. The keystone of this culture would be a food system that supports our health, making it second nature to be healthy. There would be no need for CSAs or organic farmers markets because every grocery store would sell fresh picked local and organic produce. There would be no need to scrutinize labels for high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, common genetically modified foods, flavorings, preservatives and chemicals--because we wouldn’t use them. The overriding question for any economic activity in this culture would be, “does this promote personal, community and planetary health?” and only secondarily,

Lifestyle medicine could be the bridge that helps us collectively realize that it is far more beneficial to cultivate health than patch people up with pharmaceuticals and surgery once health has been compromised. “will this make money?” For a long time I’ve wished that share owner profit was not allowed in our food and health care systems. Food and health care must be economically viable, financially supporting the people, communities and planet they serve. Yet it’s clear that the demand for ever increasing return on investment has created the mess were in right now--food and health care that makes money but doesn’t keep us or the planet healthy. I invite you to join me in creating a culture of health and wellness. I challenge you in 2012 to make a resolution to do one thing that improves your personal, family, community or planetary health and wellness. Invite a friend or family member to join you. The culture of health and wellness shows no signs yet of coming from government or industry. If you share my dream, make it happen in your life, step-by-step, but don’t wait. Do it now.

Eating Well in Kansas City In the Kitchen with Bonnie—by Bonnie Rabicoff An Introduction

special feature on “In the Kitchen with Bonnie” is the “Cooking with Kids” series. According to Dr. Sarah Hampl, Director of the Weight Management Program at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, one in three children in the United States is overweight or obese. To address this issue in our community, Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, Whole Foods Market and chefs from “In the Kitchen” came together to create a four-part feature for our multi-media foodie show. Our goal is to offer easy, fun, affordable and nutritious meals and snacks for families. We hope to encourage families to cook together and dispel the myth that healthy food is too expensive and time-consuming. The series also offers tips for parents regarding shopping, menu planning, ways to manage the mass media marketing of fast and processed foods to our children and the power of “role modeling.” In this feature of “Cooking with Kids” we asked the question, “What’s for Lunch”? James Beard award-winning Executive Chef & Owner Michael Smith had the answer. Chef Michael brought daughters Sophie and Misha to the Cooking Studio at Whole Foods Market to prepare these quick and nutritious lunches. Michael’s early training in the South of France inspired these recipes that utilize left-over chicken, beef and shrimp along with ingredients that are easy enough to pull out of the refrigerator and pantry. Our Chef reminded us that not all ingredients need to be “made from scratch.” The salsa and chili sauce are “off the shelf.” Just be sure to read the labels for quality and natural ingredients. Michael also suggests that you not prepare separate meals for the kids. Encourage your children to eat what you are eating. This is an excellent way to introduce new flavors. Having them help cook the meal

further connects them to the dish and increases the likelihood they will taste the food. About the Chef: Michael did not take a direct route to the kitchen. He actually earned a psychology degree at the University of Southern Colorado. This is also where he began work at Chateau Pyrenees. Excited by French cooking, he then traveled to the South of France; and while in Nice and Cassis, discovered the traditional European approach of artisinal products made from the freshest, local ingredients. Michael returned to the United State to serve in executive chef positions in Chicago (Carlos’ and Gordon) and Kansas City (The American Restaurant) before moving on to the role of chef & owner of Michael Smith’s & Extra Virgin (formerly forty Sardines). In 1999 Michael won the James Beard Award for “Best Chef in the Midwest” a first for him and for Kansas City.

Eating Well in Kansas City Feature—by Vaughn Lawrence Are You Eating Food? Food – A nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, promote energy, and promote growth

great book called Wheat Belly that explains this in detail. We have taken an otherwise healthy grain, like wheat, and processed it beyond recognition. We eat bagels, bread, tortillas, crackers, pizza, pie crust and thousands of things containing white flour that has no nutrition in it whatsoever. Whole grain is not the answer, but you can try some sprouted breads like Ezekial or Genesis 1:29. Grains are hard to digest and cause massive inflammation in the body. The pooch around the middle and acne in most people will completely disappear in 1-3 months eating grain free. You want to focus on millet, amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, chia, almond and other nut flours, and wild rice.

Poison – A substance with an inherent property that tends to destroy life or impair health

I

believe it is time to take a close look at these two definitions and understand that everything that enters your mouth fits one or the other. In my humble opinion (please explore for yourself), I want to make the case that 80% of what we are calling “food” today actually fits the definition of “poison.” When Paul the Apostle was talking to the church of Corinth, he made the following statement: “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 It is fascinating to me that Paul discusses the importance of glorifying God with our body. In those days, they ate fresh foods, clean mountain spring water and illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and cancer were basically non-existent. So if it was important to take care of our body 2,000 years ago, what about today? Unfortunately, we live in a very, very different world than 2000 years ago. Our modern “advances” in growing practices, food technology and medicine has literally left us scratching our heads and wondering “what happened?” when it comes to the state of current health. People are starting to realize that maybe we aren’t so advanced after all. Maybe some of those old, silly folk remedies that grandma and grandpa used actually do make some sense. It’s quite amazing how quickly we can forget the discoveries of the past, only to forge head-first into modern technology with total blindness. My goal is to encourage you. So before you read the next few paragraphs, it is critical to understand this as a call to action! It is a wake-up call to be aware of what you are putting in your body and how that is affecting your health. Disease isn’t random, it’s cause and effect. Fatigue has a cause. Migraines have a cause. Diabetes has a cause. Cancer has a cause. And so on… Dis-ease comes from blockages in the system and from nutritional deficiencies. 95% of headaches are dehydration, water deficiency. Each of the non-foods listed below cause both problems because they block the system and provide no nutrition. What we call food no longer fits the above definition.

We have taken an otherwise healthy grain, like wheat, and processed it beyond recognition. I try to make it simple. Did God make it and are you eating it in the original form? Or did someone change it in some way? This sounds basic, yet it is profound. The body was designed a certain way, just like your car. It is designed to run on specific required substances. What grows in your garden, on fruit trees or comes from your healthy, grazing farm animals fits that definition of God’s original form. Otherwise, well, it doesn’t. Let’s look at a few examples to see how “food” has been changed into “poison.” Example one – Dairy. Cows and goats eat grass. They roam on open land, they produce milk and people have used this as food for thousands of years. Today, dairy is dangerous. We have cows being forced to eat corn and other grains, which gives them infections and disease. Because of the disease, they are pumped full of antibiotics. So the cow doesn’t die too quickly because of the poor treatment, they shoot antibiotics so the animal grows faster than normal. Because the milk is so dirty, infected and diseased, they must pasteurize and homogenize it so people don’t get sick. This is simply a method to produce dirty milk. Now milk and cheese no longer fit the definition of food. Dairy is causing massive inflammation, mucus production, asthma, allergies, juvenile diabetes and hosts of other problems. It is one of the worst “foods” you could ever give a child. Organic is okay. It will not contain growth hormones or antibiotics, but you still can have animals in poor living conditions and it is still pasteurized and homogenized most likely. Raw milk is best, but this is rarely available to most people.

Example three – Sugar. This includes all sugar except fruit and honey. You can’t eat too much sugar cane in its raw form because it’s a stick! Sugar is the most damaging thing entering the human body today. It is 100% void of any nutrition and causes inflammation throughout the entire body, like Rheumatoid Arthritis for example. Arthritis is simply inflammation of the joints. To reverse it, stop eating foods that cause inflammation. The solution is to eat foods that actually fit the definition of food. This means raw fruits and vegetables. This means juicing. This means avoiding packaged and processed foods of all kinds. This means no more fast food or convenience store food. I know you have heard this a thousand times, but for many people, it still isn’t real to them, even though they have sickness and disease. Let me put it this way. God created a body that is a self-healing mechanism. Break a leg, it heals. God doesn’t give people diseases, He only heals them. If you want to get well, eat what He gave you, in its original form, and watch your body heal, as was God’s design for you in the first place.

A

with some species, can ensure a steady supply of harvest-ready fish year round. One of the obvious concerns is exposure of plants, or root crops, to untreated fish wastes and the possibilities of contamination in that process. Since fish are cold-blooded animals, they cannot harbor harmful disease organisms like E. coli or salmonella. Edibles removed from an aquaponics system can be rinsed and prepared for foods with confidence that they are organically produced and disease free. The grower will have the knowledge of exactly what went into the food as well as the satisfaction of producing it his/ herself. For vegetarians or raw food consumers, harvesting fish may not be in the equation. In that case, the use of goldfish or decorative Koi can be substituted in place of fish to be harvested for meat. The fish can be kept happy and healthy and maintained simply for the wastes they produce to benefit the plants. Ultimately, the appearance and goals of your system are completely up to your imagination and skills. Whether you want to develop a system to drive you toward a goal of self sustainability or a simple conversation piece with some goldfish and flowering plants, it is all within your grasp.

Photos from Murray Hallam’s Practical Aquaponics: www.aquaponics.net.au

quaponics is a merger of hydroponics and aquaculture that enables one to produce organic foods in limited space or in areas with poor soil or growing conditions. Applications can be as small as an aquarium system set up in the kitchen to grow fresh herbs or decorative plants to large commercial operations in urban areas. With pressures on natural resources and a growing interest in locally-grown organic foods, this system seems to provide many answers to our growing needs. Hydroponic systems are attractive for those with poor soil conditions or limited space as plants can be brought to harvest much quicker and more efficiently than in traditional soil-based operations. Water usage in hydroponic systems is also a fraction of that used in traditional agricultural operations; however, systems must be flushed of nutrient solutions periodically and this waste is often laden with excessive mineral salts. Those seeking organically-produced foods are also turned off by the use of chemical fertilizers in traditional hydroponic systems. Aquaculture systems produce large quantities of fish or marine life in contained systems and have developed to become an efficient means of reducing fishing pressure on our oceans. Aquaculture is energy intensive and requires fish wastes to be filtered and removed to prevent a toxic buildup that is harmful to the fish, thus resulting in a need to dispose of toxic compounds. However, if you were to combine hydroponics with aquaculture, you have a means of providing nutrientrich water to your plants that consume the harmful waste products, thus filtering the water before returning fresh water to the fish. This merger is the aquaponics system. The system is nearly self-contained and aside from topping off the water supply to replace that which has evaporated from the system, or transpired from the plants, water usage is minimal. The only outside product required for the system is a high-quality fish food and, depending upon the species of marine life used, you could also produce that yourself. The basic aquaponics system includes a tank for the fish, a grow bed of equal volume for the plants, a water pump and some plumbing fixtures. Although fairly simple in construction, the systems in place are actually rather

intricate. The fish must be kept in water of an adequate temperature; the pH level must be maintained; and waste products must be eliminated — which will be done by the system. The plants must receive water containing the proper nutrients, pH level and receive adequate light. The miracle in the system is what occurs in the grow beds, where, once the system is properly cycled, the bacteria and worms convert the fish waste into compounds that can be taken up by the plants and used to sustain growth and produce fruit. Once a system is set up properly and cycled, the system works in harmony and the gardener has little to do aside from feeding the fish and keeping a check on water condition. The available plant species that can be grown in an aquaponics system is only limited by pH requirements and your ability to adapt your system to particular plants needs. Typically, plants that require a pH outside the range of 6.8 to 7.0, such as blackber-

ries, peonies, rhododendron and blueberries may not be adaptable to an aquaponics system. However, the ingenuity of the individual gardener has brought many plant species into the realm of aquaponics including root crops and even fruit-bearing banana trees. The aquaponics system is still in its infancy and new discoveries and adaptations are frequent. Available fish species are also up for experimentation. Tilapia, barramundi, perch, catfish, freshwater lobster or crawfish and prawn have all been successfully raised and harvested in aquaponics systems. Tilapia, where legal to possess, are often an aquaponics system favorite due to rapid growth and maturity, a greater tolerance for water quality, and flavor. From fingerling-size to maturity, a bumper crop of fish can generally be produced and harvested in as little as nine to 12 months. Having a mixture of sizes available in the same tank, which can cause some problems with cannibalism

Cervical Dysplasia

Open to a World of Energy & Healing

C

ervical dysplasia is a potentially premalignant transformation and abnormal growth (dysplasia) of cells on the cervix . Most cases of cervical dysplasia occur in women ages 25 - 35, although it can develop at any age (1). Invasive cervical cancer develops from lesions on the cervix called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or CIN (2). Progression from normal tissue to cervical cancer occurs through a series of increasing grades of cervical dysplasia. CIN I represent mild cervical dysplasia and can have a low rate of progression to cancer. In contrast, CIN II and III, which is moderate to severe cervical dysplasia has a higher chance to progress to invasive cervical cancer. Between 250,000 and 1 million American women are diagnosed with CIN annually (1). The exact cause of cervical dysplasia is not known. However, studies have found a strong correlation between cervical dysplasia and infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are a number of risk factors that can increase the chance of developing cervical dysplasia include the following:

Complementary and alternative medicinal treatment uses Escharotic treatment for cervical dysplasia. The use of escharotic for epithelial cancers is based on a centuries-old principle that certain mineral and plant extracts could be used to treat topical skin lesions. Zinc chloride and Sanguinaria canadensis (bloodroot) are the two agents that are traditionally part of this protocol (4). Studies have been done using the Escharotic protocol in treating cervical dysplasia (5). These studies suggest the need for a multi-faceted approach to preventing cervical cancer (6). Primary prevention of cervical dysplasia is of the utmost importance. One of the most effective preventions is to reduce risky sexual behavior which involves more than one partner at a time, early sexual experiences and not using condoms which exposes the female to HPV. Other prevention strategies include:

HPV infection Genital warts Smoking Early age of sexual activity (younger than 18 years old) Multiple sexual partners History of one or more sexually transmitted diseases Dietary deficiencies such as Vitamin A, beta-carotene, selenium or folate Lack of condom use.

The purpose of a pap smear is to detect potentially precancerous changes. An abnormal Pap smear result may lead to a recommendation for colposcopy of the cervix, in which the cervix is examined under magnification. A biopsy is taken of any abnormal appearing areas. Cervical dysplasia can be diagnosed by the biopsy. Standard convention treatment for cervical dysplasia depends on the degree of dysplasia. Mild dysplasia may resolve itself and the person may only need to be monitored by repeat Pap smears every 3 to 6 months. If the dysplasia does not go away or treatment for moderate to severe dysplasia includes (3): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Cryosurgery Laser therapy LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) Surgery to remove the abnormal tissue HPV vaccine.

eaching mid-life can bring crisis. It can also bring freedom and open doors to a world of new possibilities; it all depends on how you approach it. A recent journey to a writer’s conference offered the chance for a session focusing on spa writing. In 10 hours, we would learn the details of the different therapies, get a glimpse of the healing world of massage from an insider’s point of view, and tour a local spa, which included a treatment. That enticement was the deal-maker for me. After a morning of learning the differences in treatment types, my mind was reeling. Who knew there were so many philosophies, so many different modalities, and so many options for the consumer? The afternoon concluded with a visit to a spa in a historic area of Chicago. The spa was unlike any I’d visited in Kansas City. All therapists at this spa were “intuitives,” meaning they rely on their intuitive nature to help them read the needs of not only the body, but also the spirit. The 30-minute energizing massage was truly one of the most effective I’ve ever had, leaving me both relaxed and energized at the same time. I vowed to find someplace similar once I returned home. An internet search for different alternative modalities led me to web sites of many different therapists; but not until I found At The Healing Place, was I enticed enough to call. I called to set up a time to meet the partners, Sheri Woxland and Tammy Barton. I explained that I had just attended a conference, what I was looking for, and asked if I could meet with them. Both women are very warm and welcoming. The lower level of their home hosts their business where they offer two treatment rooms and sauna, as well as an assortment of classes. The lounge area displays artwork—drawings, photography and jewelry created by the therapists. The main treatment room is equipped with not only a traditional massage table, but a variety of tools that may be utilized in intuitive massage methods: crystals, feathers and small drums. A large piece of selenite crystal is centered under the table. This assists in clearing the energy paths, or Chakras, in the body. A rose quartz crystal, used to promote unconditional love is located next to the selenite crystal. It is believed the positioning of these crystals will help transfer their healing properties to the client. My 30-minute massage combined an interesting blend of cranial sacral and intuitive methods--both new experiences for me. Unlike Swedish massage, where

long, relaxing strokes are utilized, these methods were strikingly different, using light touch and redirection of my own energies. I lay face-up, rather than on my stomach, on the table. As Sheri, my therapist, began, we decided she should choose her treatment methods as she proceeded. She began using cranial sacral techniques. Sensing a blockage, she handed me a crystal to hold in my right hand. Returning to her table, she retrieved a crystal pendulum to check my chakras. Additional crystals were placed next to my left shoulder and she moved to my neck and shoulders. I was certain she was moving my head, employing methods similar to stretching in a yoga class, but was later assured that she was simply following my body’s own movements, as the natural unwinding occurred allowing my body to be “re-bathed” in the spinal fluid. Sheri explained to me that, “An energy cyst is created by the trauma held somewhere in your body. Cranial Sacral helps release that so you can move on.” As I lay there, I kept wondering how these simple light touches could really rejuvenate me. Once finished, I felt refreshed and relaxed. Sheri shared with me what she had sensed, and her interpretations of what was causing blockages in my body. Her insight was amazing as she had sensed events in my life and how they were affecting me physically and spiritually. I confirmed to her what her insight had revealed. The session offered a unique and enlightening experience. I am anxious to explore these nontraditional modalities in more depth, treating the soul and not just the body. Beauty Behind Barbed Wire Getting to Know Bambi Shen By Daniel Moler

Y

ears ago Bambi Shen went to a country auction and wanted to purchase some items. She didn’t have cash and wanted to write a check. “I’ll have to see some ID,” the clerk tells her. No problem, thinks Bambi. She writes her check and hands it to the clerk. He takes one look at her elegant, calligraphy-style handwriting and says: “With handwriting like this, I don’t need your ID.” This tells you a little something about the magic that is Bambi Shen. Bambi Shen’s days are filled with speaking engagements, panel discussions and volunteer work. A cheerful and resourceful woman, Bambi has dedicated her life to assisting other people—especially women—with empowering their lives. Her memoir, The Uncrushable Rose: Memoir from Concentration Camp to Becoming a Free Woman, details precisely why she would be qualified for just such a task. I sat down with Bambi to discuss her book and was immediately enraptured by her charm and wit. You wouldn’t know she had spent several years of her childhood growing up in concentration camps. “My father was a Chinese diplomat in French Indo-China, modern day Vietnam. When the Japanese invaded, they held my family and the entire consulate (men, wives, children and servants) to force the Chinese to give up their hold on the rice market. We were transferred to four different camps in that time. One camp in particular, we were lucky if we were served one meal a day. We slept on tile floors, and my father was badly mistreated.” It was in this environment where Bambi learned to be resourceful, to make the best of any situation. “Sometimes the Allies would fly over and bomb us, because we were close to a weapons depot of the Japanese. One day, while playing with a friend, the bombs came. We were taught to duck and cover. When the bombs stopped that day I stood up and my friend did not.” It was a tragic time to be sure, but it did not last. Bambi and her family endured for four years. With the war over, life returned to normal and Bambi received a Catholic education from schools in the French colonies. By the time she was 18, she had received a scholarship to attend St. Catherine Junior College in Kentucky. She took a risk, and with nothing but $500 in her pocket, flew to America to start a new life of freedom. “My mother was

always very disapproving of me,” she explains. “In fact, the first chapter of my book is titled ‘Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.’ First, according to mother, I was born the wrong gender. It was not good to be born a female in her eyes. Next, I was born in the wrong time of her life, I was an inconvenience. Finally, the third wrong was that she said I was ‘ugly as a monkey’ and had no hope for any man to marry me. I realized I had to become a free woman.” Coming to America, Bambi had some adjustment of course. However, over time she learned how to take charge of her own life, and eventually dedicated herself to helping other women discover their own power. “I address the woman who has no self-esteem,” Bambi clarifies the details of her work. “My book encourages women to take charge of themselves. I have what I call the SHELF system. Each component of this acronym is a building block for being a resourceful person: ‘S’ stands for building up your Self-esteem, ‘H’ is for taking charge of your Health, ‘E’ is for getting the Education or training you need in order to make a proper living, ‘L’ is for knowing and understanding your Legal rights as a citizen (and specifically as a woman), and ‘F’ is for being in control of your own Finances. This system will empower your own life, a way to help you stand on

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

17

your own two feet.” Bambi has shared her SHELF process with churches, schools, book clubs, women’s shelters, and even Federal offices. In fact, before we spoke she had just come from a meeting with the Department of Labor regarding their Diversity and Inclusion Summit, to be held Feb. 24, 2012 at Penn Valley Community College. “I love to help people—and women especially— to find that something they do so well that somebody is willing to pay them for it. A way to make a living doing something they love.” There is a glimmer of light in Bambi’s eyes as she describes her work. “It is so sweet to succeed, but sweeter still to help someone else to succeed.” It is impossible not to be inspired when around Bambi; passion glows from her like the intricate flowers detailing the cover of her book. “Let me tell why my book is called The Uncrushable Rose. In that camp we were surrounded by barb wire and my father had in his possession a secret code book that allowed telegraphed communication back to Chinese officials. He knew it would be found out soon enough so he made a plan to go to the kitchen to burn it. My father made the excuse he was going to the kitchen and bribed the cook to order some rose bushes for our area in the camp. It was to cover up burning the code book, but he did indeed order the rose bushes. And this was his lesson to us: that these bushes are in a concentration camp as well, but it does not matter to them. Their nature is to bloom, and they will do so no matter where they are planted. So, we need to learn from them and not allow our outer circumstances to keep us from being what we are born to be. We need to bloom wherever we are planted. This is the essence of how we should live.” Bambi Shen’s book and information regarding speaking engagements can be found at her website at www.uncrushablerose.com.

Your Success is Defined by Your Definition of Success By Judy Widener

\

t's common to watch as others become successful, then beat ourselves up because we're not getting as far and as fast as they are. But, how do we avoid falling into the trap of comparing ourselves to others? First, let's explore the concept of success. What does the word success mean to you, and how does it define who you are? If success is synonymous with achievement, then you’ll need to produce something outside yourself to be successful. In this scenario, success is an ending point. You’re not successful until you produce an outcome: the promotion, the income, the paid off debt, the garden teeming with zucchini and zinnias, the independentlysustaining adult children, etc. This is a case of deferred gratification. But if success means the attainment of something, then you’re successful any time you create an internal state that you want. Very different from achievement. Through your personal growth, you can attain inner peace, harmonious relationships, self-love, self-knowledge, confidence, motivation, fulfillment, and the freedom to just be you. So choosing your state of being in this moment is a form of immediate gratification. To contrast the two: you can achieve success in business, but the happy feeling you seek isn’t guaranteed to accompany success. Have you ever felt bewildered because you achieved a success, but you weren’t happy? Our culture trains us to look to external factors to trigger our happy feelings--that doesn’t always happen. The deeper truth is this: you don’t need to wait for permission or justification to feel good. You’ll attain inner peace, joy and fulfillment the instant you choose to create it inside. Generating your own positive feelings is

the only path to lasting inner peace. As long as something or someone outside you dictates when and how you feel, you’re at their mercy. Any momentary experience of peace will dissolve when anyone around you upsets the apple cart. For example, one of our biggest challenges in romantic relationships is the temptation to compare successes. Sure, we can intellectually agree that we each have our own passion and personality that we express in our own inimitable way. But, competition can creep in when your career grows at a pace that’s faster or slower than your partner’s. It’s so tempting to erroneously judge faster as better! Judging is an attempt to focus your attention on the other person, so you don’t have to deal with your own issues. But the nature of relationships is that each of us holds up the mirror that reflects our partner’s strengths, fears, doubts, beliefs and baggage—the whole kit and kaboodle. So try as you might to focus your judgment on them, your mirror always reflects the spots where you haven’t yet achieved the personal growth you’re seeking. When you see your reflection clearly,

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

you’re free to create your own definition of success. Therefore, if you want to feel successful, pinpoint where you’re successful now. You don’t have to wait until you achieve a goal to enjoy success. Look for desires you’ve already attained—they’ll feel fulfilling any time you focus on them. The key to enjoying success is to tie it to things you’re passionate about. For instance, you could choose to be a successful lover of life, a successful seeker of personal growth, a successful partner and friend, a successful nurturer of your children, a successful painter of pictures, and dozens more. Finding as much joy as you can is key to your personal development. You don’t have to wait to feel fulfilled until you’ve attained the full picture of who you want to become. Every step along the way can be celebrated as its own success. Joy is available to you now. Look for it everywhere. When you master the process of creating joy, you’ll feel fulfilled in every moment…in an honest and real way. The Golden Motorcycle Gang By Jack Canfield and William Gladstone

The following is excerpted from the new book The Golden Motorcycle Gang: a Story of Transformation (November 11, 2011) and is reprinted with permission of Hay House and the authors Jack Canfield and William Gladstone. © 2011

O

h, what glorious beings they were! Flying through the universe on their magnificent golden motorcycles, the cosmic wind in their hair, going wherever they chose, traveling at light speed, sometimes even faster. Their bodies were ephemeral yet defined, and they en-joyed the ageless youth gifted to their species. Only a few thousand years old, they were considered adoles-cents, not yet the elders of their planet or their uni-verse—elders who each had tens of thousands of years of experience in dealing with complex worlds and the moral difficulties that arose from engaging those worlds. The beings traveled through this beautiful, endless day, which was much like the many they’d enjoyed to-gether on their annual solstice breaks. As the Class of 2012 at the Academy of Enlightenment, they were fast approaching the time when they would graduate and be given assignments to ensure the balance and stabil-ity of the universe for eons to come, much like their elders before them. Today, however, was a day to enjoy the carefree exhilaration of their youth and freedom. Dozens of them rode together, sharing their boundless joy through their thoughts, for they communicated only with thoughts. Their thoughts shaped words, which they immediately understood; yet communication was instantaneous, faster than words could ever be, and infinitely more clear. It was a perfect day and they were in high spirits. Suddenly Jack noticed a small bluish planet off to his right. It was about 50,000 miles below but clearly visible to him. “Hey, look over there. That planet seems to be in trouble. I can sense the energy coming from the surface—and it’s full of turmoil, sadness, anger, even rage. I’ve seen this planet before; I have sensed its people and their growth and their struggles. Although there have always been some discordant sparks from this world, I’ve never felt such sorrow as I’m feeling today.” Such was Jack’s instantaneous thought to his riding friends, or as they liked to call themselves, the Golden Motorcycle Gang. On that magical motorcycle ride through the universe, Jack and his friends had easily picked up on the negative energy coming from planet Earth. The suffering radiating from the dazzling blue ball was unmistakable. The year on Earth was 1943, and great conflict was raging on much of the planet. The battles engulfed a great deal of its middle band, from one great ocean to the next. The planet was divided into groups called “nations,” which were sometimes the result of geogra-

phy but oftentimes the result of human choice. Many of the largest and most militarily well-armed nations were focused on the fighting. Almost all the human beings on the planet at that time were thinking about this great conflict, whether their nation would exist if and when the battles ever ended, and if their loved ones would survive and return from the battlefields around the world. Jack looked around and realized that for perhaps the only time in his existence, he had no explanation for the energy being emitted by this planet. What was this “war,” as the humans called it? What in a human’s life could happen that would convince him or her that it was right and good to end the lives of millions of other identically created life-forms? Jack decided he needed to learn as much as he could, as quickly as he could, about this concept of “war.” War was not a reality in the outer reaches of the universe where he lived, and although he lacked the understanding of the impulse to hate and kill, he knew he would not be able to help planet Earth un-less he learned more about war and the decision to kill others. “Yes, what a tragedy,” his close friend Michael thought back. “Such a beautiful blue planet, so full of life, creativity, and joy despite the clear tumors that seem to be infesting it now.” “Tumors? I never thought of these ills as tumors, but that planet needs some help,” Jack thought back to Michael. “I think we should do something. All our decades of training at the Academy of Enlightenment have prepared us for our roles as masters of harmony. I think we should stop by this planet and see what we can do to help.” Mark, another member of the Gang, looked at Jack in disbelief. “Jack, this is the first day of our sol-stice break. We have a great voyage ahead of us. We can go anywhere and everywhere, no responsibilities, no fixed agenda, just experiencing all that the uni-verse has to offer and the solidarity of great friends. Do you know how long it might take to get that lit-tle blue globe back on track? It could take us several human lifetimes or more, and that would certainly put a damper on our fun.” “That may be so, but look at them,” Jack replied. “They’re slowly destroying themselves. They’re in real trouble. Think how great it would be to get that planet back into balance. I have tuned in to it, and it is a really special place—with many different species and lots of variety with respect to geography, climate, and creative ideas. It could be a really fun place. And, what’s most ironic is that it’s their wonderful diversity that is dividing them into opposing factions and threaten-ing their continued existence. What makes them so special is also what’s causing them to face extinction. “The people there call their planet ‘Earth.’ There has only been intelligent life on Earth for ten or twenty

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

19

thousand years. That planet is not much older than we are. We should take a little time to see if we can prevent the catastrophic events that we can sense are ahead for them. I think it would be an adventure . . . and when we get back to the Academy, if we can get this Earth back to health, we would probably get all kinds of extra credit for it.” Jack added this overly optimistic goal, knowing it would probably appeal to his fellow riders. “Well, since you put it that way, I can’t let you go alone,” Mark shot back. “So if you’re bound and determined to go down there, I guess we’re all going to have to join you.” “Absolutely,” beamed Michael and Janet; along with Steve, Bob, Martin, and Marcia. The rest of the Golden Motorcycle Gang silently voiced their approval. Mission accepted! In what seemed to them no more than the blink of an eye, each had taken form as new beings—“human beings,” born on planet Earth. The Gang had failed to mention one critical element of their mission of intervention and redemption: once they were born into human bodies, they would forget that they were cosmic beings with unlimited lifetimes. In order to grow and develop as human beings on Earth, many years would pass before they would remember who they truly were and why they had chosen to be born into a body. And so our story of the Golden Motorcycle Gang and their adventures on planet Earth begins.

January 2012

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels January 2012 Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! This is a wonderful month for healing your mind and thoughts. You can be extremely self-critical and downright mean to yourself. Meditate and focus on kind messages. Forgive yourself for human frailties. Ask people who care about you, and they’ll tell you those “awful” traits make you loveable. Aim to view yourself with the same level of appreciation and compassion! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) The planet Mars is turning retrograde, making you look at issues intimacy, sexuality and trust. Even if you’ve never had betrayal in your romantic life, you can be guarded and overly independent. Mars is working these next six months to help you learn to let go and surrender to love! Watch out for being critical of your partner, because it’s just a way to cover up your fear of merging deeply. Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You are healing your self-esteem at a very deep level. Be aware that feeling defensive or being argumentative is a way of protecting yourself, since you feel so vulnerable. You’ve shed old skin, and the new skin is very tender. Even though this could be an emotionally bumpy month, you’ll feel very solid by the New Year. You can even start a new relationship, with someone who is courageous enough to be him/herself fully – or, you’ll recognize the warriorlike commitment your current partner has for you! Aries (March 21 – April 19) It’s important for you to really get the connection between your health and your moods. You’re more physically sensitive than you’d like to admit! Does caffeine make you edgy and angry? Does junk food make you depressed? Treat your body with respect so you can be in your “highest self” more frequently. Make time to feed yourself right, rest when you

need and meditate to refresh your soul! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Meditate on your relationships. See if you have unrealistic expectations of partners. Maybe you have walls up because of past romantic disappointments. Ask your soul to help you release illusions, while still maintaining healthy standards. Also, make sure you’re having enough fun in your life. Play with kids or pets. Go to an art exhibit. Join a sports team. Lighten up and laugh! These are forms of healing that will create balance and joy! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Meditate and work on releasing anger at family members. This could be childhood memories, or current issues with people you live (or even work) with. Once you do this inner healing, you’ll feel a greater level of serenity – even with people who are still annoying! You could also be getting a new job, or a promotion. In general, professional talents will unfold over these next six months, so be hopeful and eager! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You could feel very irritated this month, so take some deep breaths before you get into intense or triggering conversations. Cancers always need to watch out for patterns of blaming others. It’s good to take stock of the past two years and see what your “contribution” to difficult circumstances was.

Take responsibility, but don’t beat yourself up! Forgive yourself and others involved. You’ll feel a flooding of relief and happiness. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You will have deep healing around financial worthiness issues, as well as self-esteem struggles and intimacy fears. Meditate on abundance. There is enough money to go around! There is enough love for everyone! You deserve all that the Universe has to offer! (And that is an endless supply of good!) Positive affirmations will have a big impact on how you feel in your own skin, as well as in your closest relationships. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You’ve been making so many strides with career, relationships and self-confidence. Now that Mars is turning retrograde in your sign, watch out for flagging spirits. If you have setbacks, meditate on ways to become even more effective. Look for ways to reduce stress and worry. Trust that success is your birthright! Maybe you’re pushing too hard and need to let things unfold naturally instead. Be gentle and forgiving with yourself, and just make changes that occur to you. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Meditate and clear away anger, d i s app oi n tm e n t a n d s e l f judgment form the past two years. Mars is retrograde and wants to help you remove old subconscious debris that would keep you from feeling super happy in the future. You want to be ready to absorb all the power of Mars in Libra six months from now. Journal your emotions and burn the papers, or tear them up. If you do this inner work, you’ll also find you’ll be healthier, less stressed and will be able to solve irritating problems much easier. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) This is a month for deep healing about relationships. Meditate and

release events that have caused you to be suspicious of love. You have a window of opportunity to open up to wonderfully positive relationships, so don’t miss out by being stuck in the past! If already coupled, you’ll notice a renewed sense of love and appreciation with your partner. Also, take a good look at friends and see if they are truly supportive of you – and if they are, make sure you let them be supportive! Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21) Be patient if you need to make changes at work. People seem extra frustrating right now! Beware of your sarcastic humor, which is definitely hilarious, but can also get you in major trouble at this time! Meditate to help yourself deal with irritations. Even a deep breath or two could be a minimeditation when you’re faced with a “situation”. It’s an important spiritual step to resolve these issues and not just abandon ship or run away.
