News... Better Health with Chinese Medicine With the recent movement towards better health by exercising, eating better, giving up soda and reading labels, it is no surprise that this movement encompasses the age old practices of acupuncture and chinese medicine. The mantra of living better through chemistry is a thing of the past. The push towards more natural healing and better lifestyle is always encouraged by Back and Bodyworks Massage owner, Sharon Schneider RN LMT, and especially now with her addition of staff to include Sarah Fruetel MSOM, Master of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy. place where you feel, acknowledge what you feel and you bring it back to the heart to gain the wisdom from that. And that’s the new….It really is because spirit connects with the emotional system through the heart.” I agree with Dr. Rozman. The heart is the new frontier in human evolution. As a life coach, I like to provide my clients with easy to remember acronyms: my acronym for change is this: H-E-A-R-T; Humanity Experiencing A Radical Transformation. So for me, transformation is a five-letter word and is centered around the heart. The most important lesson I learned in making the film was about acceptance. I had been carrying around a heavy load of resentment from my past of childhood sexual abuse. And in doing so, I had been periodically reexperiencing aspects of victimconsciousness. It was visible in my face which carried the same shut-down expression I had in childhood. I created the theme “Dive In, Tune In, Lighten Up” early in the filmmaking process. I was good at diving in and tuning into the hurt and pain of the past – I’d been doing that for years. But what I learned to do in opening my heart fully and entering into acceptance, was to finally “lighten up” and that’s what seen in the after picture. I lightened up in many ways, I lost weight, my skin cleared, my eyes and entire face were more animated and alive, and today, I laugh a lot, love even more and continue to live heartcentered every day.

I look back on the film’s progression now and see it as a valuable lesson, one that I would not change at all. In the process of learning to open my heart again, I have learned to be fully present. I learned how to express my feelings as well as my thoughts. I am now able to be animated, articulate and joyful in sharing my message. All transformation starts with the willingness to change. And when that willingness is heart-based, the change is radical.

Self-Published Book on Quantum Prayer Available Cathy Combs’ book, Quantum Prayer: It's Already Answered! Quantum Reality It Already Exists! is an expression of her embodied understanding of what she calls the Unitive Principle — that matter and Spirit are one and the same, simply two different expressions of the same thing: Energy!!! This Energy

Transformation is a big word. The first definition in the World English Dictionary is “a change or alteration, especially a radical one”. You can see the radical alteration in my appearance in the before and after photos in this article. And it was radical. The radical outer change was created by the inner change I experienced in making the film, Sacred Journey of the Heart. The film is about the science and spirit of our connection but more obviously, the film is about heart, where all true transformation is centered. In making the film, I went through a personal journey from stress to balance, from fear to gratitude and acceptance, and from agitation to peace. I learned something valuable from every person that touched the film, especially from our “heart experts”. I learned about heart coherence* (see definition below) from the Institute of HeartMath® as I proceeded to become a certified HeartMath® Provider. I fully embraced Radical Forgiveness after meeting Colin Tipping and becoming a certified RF coach. And I developed some of my own proprietary practices along the way, such as the 360 degree review that I share near the end of the film. One of our expert scientific speakers, Dr. Deb Rozman of the Institute of HeartMath® says in the film: “Heart coherence is really a balanced

Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. The Wise Fool If the fool would persist in his folly, he would become wise. —William Blake

T

his is often the season when we make lists of things that will hopefully help us be healthier, happier or more successful. Experience tells us that this endeavor may end in few tangible results and often a dose of disappointment. What obstacles defeat us in this journey? Enter the fool, or the trickster, who appears in the myths of many different cultures. The Trickster is archetypal, usually male, a boundary-crosser, a creator, a joker, a truth teller, a hero and a villain. “This outlandish, yet remarkable being in human form, learns, grows in understanding, changes, and at a certain point in his adventuresome blunders is transformed. Until that moment, however, Trickster keeps changing shape and experimenting with a thousand identities…in a seemingly n ev er-en din g sea rc h f or hi mself.” (crystalinks.com). No wonder we have such a struggle as this mischievous part of ourselves, outside of our conscious awareness, simultaneously diverts us from our path and

leads us into a deeper maze of our being. “The negative Fool may be expressed in unbridled and undisciplined sensualitysloth, irresponsibility, gluttony, lechery, drunkenness…all Tricksters are also shape shifters and wear disguises. One never knows when or where they will pop up.” (Awakening the Heroes Within; Carol S. Pearson) This certainly complicates our lives, doesn’t it? It makes people say things like, “The devil made me do it.” Though there may be humor at times, we are often frustrated and disappointed in ourselves. It is like playing hide and seek with parts of ourselves that are rather infantile, undeveloped and having their way with us. We may see ourselves as victims of circumstances or other people. This Trickster is an innate part of us. Noting the constant appearance of this character in myth, Carl Jung identified it as an archetype, a repeating pattern of human behavior as observed in many cultures. He believed it was part of our innate neurobiological makeup. Like many other parts of our being, it is brainbased, part of our DNA. It is the inner conflict that propels us to growth or doom.

Understanding our type gives us information and insight into how we might manifest this trickster part of ourselves. Carl Jung’s personality type theory is the source for Isabel Briggs Myer’s Type Inventory, which helps us assess our type preferences. The spiritual and cultural values and behaviors of our environment also influence us as we mature and develop. A child who has an enriched learning environment may use that cleverness to invent things, to lead others in new and different ways while a child in a more deprived environment may use their trickster to learn how to avoid the law, to steal or cheat for survival. It is the same energy, guided by different environmental influences. The wounds that one has experienced become a big part of determining how that Trickster part will evolve. He wants to survive and will use cunning, shapeshifting, and often, deceit, to accomplish this. The painful experiences or trauma live in the survival/reptilian brain and the limbic/mammalian brain. That is why these parts of ourselves often appear emotionally; exploding or imploding. How do we harness the power of this

part of our being? Moving from the unconscious experience into conscious awareness gives us choice. Then our whole brain, body/mind can be engaged. We can change neural pathways from unconscious survival mechanisms to conscious healthier behaviors. Then we practice, practice, practice! “This Trickster is a teacher, survivor, hero, always traveling, outrageous and cunning, foolish and wise, mischievous and often doing good despite himself. He is a metaphor for the evolution of consciousness in the alchemy of time.” (crystalinks.com) As you become more aware of this awesome, creative and powerful part of yourself, may you find new joy, new incentive for bolder change and some humor along the way. Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D. New Year’s Health Resolutions

O

n the path to optimal wellness, several aspects of our life are important. For our minds and bodies to function well, it is imperative to allow ourselves refreshing sleep, healthy foods, regular exercise, and stress management. For the New Year, I will share a few of my resolutions for 2013. •

• • •

Physical: my physical goal is to move my body more with walking, yoga and continue to ballroom dance regularly. Mental: Read a new book each month on personal wellness or spirituality. Emotional: Share my emotions fully and regularly with my significant other and my friends. Spirituality: Donate time each month to my Church home and spend time in conversation with God daily.

To expand on the physical part of the holistic quadrangle, I am presenting ideas to improve your physical environment. The physical environment plays a crucial role, specifically the quality of the water and food we ingest and the air we breathe. Pollutants abound. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: • More than four-billion pounds of chemicals were released into the ground in 2000, threatening our natural ground water sources. • Nearly two-billion pounds of air emissions were pumped into the atmosphere. • Several thousand food additives are intentionally added to our food supply and thousands more slip into our food supply unintentionally during harvesting, processing or packaging. Overall, the average American consumes about 124 pounds of food additives a year! In addition, exposure to toxins is increased by eating processed foods and fat, drinking or bathing in tap water, consuming excessive caffeine and/or alcohol, using tobacco, taking medications for long durations, inadequate exercise, liver or kidney problems and occupational exposure. So what can you do to improve your health and minimize these exposures? Whatever you think about detoxifying your body, both critics and proponents agree on one thing: The best way to reduce the level of chemicals/toxins in your body is to bar their entrance. To reduce your exposure: 1) Don’t smoke and avoid secondary smoke. 2) Eat as much organic food as possible, especially if you consume animal products. 3) Use water filters in your refrigerator, sink and shower. 4) Use natural cosmetics, deodorants, and hair sprays. 5) Use nontoxic bug repellents. 6) Substitute chemical-laden, scented household cleaners and detergents for all-natural ones. 7) Limit your use of paint, varnish and wax.

8) Use air purifiers. 9) Avoid alcohol, artificial sweeteners and caffeine. 10) Don’t use plastic containers unless they are BPA free and avoid products presoaked in formaldehyde such as particleboard and permanent-press fabrics. To assist your system to eliminate toxins: 1) Exercise regularly at least 30 minutes, three times a week. 2) Drink plenty of water daily; divide your weight in half and that is how many ounces preferred per day. 3) Eat red grapes and berries, nuts and seeds, cruciferous vegetables, beans, leafy greens, onions and garlic regularly. 4) Take a homeopathic detox kit twice a year. 5) Participate in a 10-day or 28-day diet program that combines low allergenic, organic foods with a source of protein and nutrients known to enhance the body’s detoxification capacity. 6) Far-Infrared Sauna treatments. 7) Enroll in a Juice Fast or cleansing retreat. 8) Make an appointment to discuss an individualized approach to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit. Detoxification of the body can lead to better sleep and relaxation, decrease in aches and pain, reduce allergy symptoms, aid weight loss and improve energy and overall health. Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes

Let’s Get Naked—by Heidi Alfrey

Make 2013 a Great Year

Create a Pristine 2013!

This new year invites us to consider the power of the focused clear mind. As the laser beam made of focused light can cut through glass, your laser intention can cut through the muck of confusion, inertia, and doubt.

Asking improves your chance of receiving by 200 percent,” claim Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen in their book, The Aladdin Factor. “When you embrace a desire fully enough, it literally becomes a part of you,” writes Rod Stryker in his book The Four Desires. At this stage of wanting, the object of your desire influences the way you think, feel and act. He writes that at this level of intensity your attention to your desire has increased to a point that is commonly re fe rre d t o as Yo ga Nidr a’s “intention.” Your desire has now gathered or collected more energy and intensity for it to be fulfilled. And in some cases it may be a force strong enough to help us manifest our desire. The third intensity of desire is indomitable will and determination. This refers to you being unwilling to fail. In this case, the full force of your desire is now unyielding. No amount of "no" or discouragement keeps you from continuing to invest all of yourself and everything to attain your goal. If you realize your desire lacks as much intensity as you would have hoped, don’t worry. The Four Desires advocates that in order to achieve what you want, “...all you have to do to is make a decision.” You must decide NOW, that you cannot and will not fail. There is comfort in how the yoga tradition acknowledges that we are already in a state of fulfillment. We cannot get there because we are there. The only trouble is that we are not aware of it. To become aware of it– feel and experience it–we must connect with the light of our soul. This part is fun for me. Still, we all have resistance to our desires which the ancient yogis call “vikalpa.” This is the energy that splits you off from your soul, based on deep-seated patterns and beliefs. The solution? Relax! Meditation, savasana, and yoga nidra are three powerful tools to help us overcome resistance. How easy is that? Yet, only three out of 10 of you reading this page will manifest your desires this year. The quiet practice of yoga serves as an impetus to success. My friend Nan and I attended a mediation workshop recently. By day three we felt such love and happiness all dreams become possible. Our state

G

of well-being and contentment soared to new heights. We meditated each day about two to three hours which is a lot for some people. I say all the time to students at The Yoga School to become still and quiet is a learned skill. In 2013 the gifts of becoming still, quiet, and relaxed will serve you will. Come on over. We will take good care of you. A woman from the national guard came to class after doing power yoga and never was taught how to relax. At the end of her first class she said out loud for all to hear: “Oh my Gosh, I’ve never felt so relaxed in my entire life!” That was her very first time to feel the well-being of her soul.

Dream New Dreams at The Yoga School of Therapeutics. We teach the methods based on the 8,000 year old yoga tradition of yoga health and happiness, whether 18 or 80. Come over, be met with a smile. and create a calm mind, healthy body, and lifted spirit. Become inspired and healthy. reetings Authentic Souls. Happy New Year: A New Beginning… What a fabulous opportunity to harness the Power of the Creative Force within you! A brand new year is rich with fertile soil to plant seeds in the form of inspired thoughts that will blossom throughout the next 12 months and be the next level of you in January 2014. It is essential to take time this month to take away from “routine” to create “pristine in 2013”. The answers are within but we all have to stop and listen. Years ago I had a bumper sticker that read “Clarity is Power”, when any of us are clear about a thing...the Universe is all over putting it into our life experience. In our culture of busyness, clarity is often overlooked for the completion of our “to do” list. I wonder if we could turn our “to do” list this year in to a “to be” list. Not only would it be a feeling of spiritual connection, it would also open up time to complete all projects with a sense of purpose rather than stress. This new year invites us to consider the power of the focused clear mind. As the laser beam made of focused light can cut through glass, your laser intention can cut through the muck of confusion, inertia, and doubt. So our main New Year commitment can be to time management this month to create rituals for yourself. More and more meditation is offered as a group process all over town. Contemplative retreats are available, classes focusing on one’s prosperity, and mastermind groups. When the student is ready the teacher appears, just be open to finding the avenue that fits for you and it will appear. The phrase “Be Still and Know” can guide us into this way of life. Commit to time to LISTEN to the wisdom within, perhaps less TV or time on the computer, turn on peace-filled music or inspirational messages instead. Sometimes we fall into the illusion that if we just drift along doing the

same thing that miraculously something new will appear. I’ve found that allowing something new to be shown to me always required my action of stripping off the old, getting spiritually naked, and then the new idea appears. As I boldly follow that inspired knowing and remember the “Universe plots for my Good,” the new chapter of my life is shown. You are not here as the unique, “never-come-again you” to just suck air and be ordinary. You chose to come to the planet at this time to let your light shine and be extraordinary. Everything we are looking for is within…take time in the exquisiteness and unlimited possibility offered in this new year to listen and follow the guidance of your soul. Don’t deprive the world of the gift of you for one more minute!

I have been so richly blessed by writing and sharing my “naked” news with you Evolving Souls for the last year. Thank you for reading… “Let’s Get Naked: Revealing your Authentic Selves”. It has been a huge step in my believing in me to write about authenticity and I’ve loved it! Thank you Jill for the opportunity, I am going on to create other authentic adventures… keep up with me at www.heidialfrey.com. Remember you have nothing to hide!!! s a powerful wave of consciousness spreads across our planet, thousands of ordinary people from all walks of life are spontaneously moving into high states of consciousness previously experienced by precious few. In September, Dr. Ron Leymaster, a Lee’s Summit Oneness Blessing Giver and well-respected marriage and family therapist with more than 36 years of experience, attended a fourweek relationships course at Oneness University in India (www.onenessuniversity.org) where he and many others were officially declared “fully awakened.” I spoke with Ron about his experience prior to this defining shift and directly afterwards. Ron explains: “An unawakened person is constantly suffering. S/he is triggered by all the hurts, pains, angers, sadnesses, disappointments, loneliness and emptiness of life. True peace remains elusive because these deep pains are always present.” Of his personal experience, Ron says: “I was always planning for the future, worrying about the past or worried that something would go wrong. There was stress, tension and anxiety — which is the suffering most of humanity experiences daily. “After awakening, I noticed I had no fear of the future, I wasn’t carrying any of the pain of the past, and I was free of worry. Now, my life is only about what’s happening in this very moment and living that. All the things that used to trigger me aren’t here to take my time and energy. I no longer suffer through ‘woulda, coulda, shoulda’. And this experience isn’t temporary, it’s here all the time, from the minute I open my eyes each morning.” Neurologically, when a person fully awakens, a measureable rewiring of the brain takes place that is permanent. Ron explains: “Awakening reboots your brain, removes what is no longer needed and replaces it with a new, more blissful and efficient mode of functioning. Physiologically, the body responds differently. Mentally, the mind

Many people long on the path enviously question, “Why Ron?” He responds: “Why not me? It can happen to anybody and is happening to many ‘normal’ people. Why not you?”

Ron explains: “An unawakened person is constantly suffering. S/he is triggered by all the hurts, pains, angers, sadnesses, disappointments, loneliness and emptiness of life. True peace remains elusive because these deep pains are always present.”

It is believed that one awakened person impacts the consciousness of 100,000 people. Ron shares: “It spreads rapidly. It’s kind of like tossing a pebble in a pond. As the ripple spreads, it affects everyone it comes into contact with.” And spread it has. In November, Oneness University reported more than 161,000 people around the world as fully awakened, with the expectation of many more ordinary people following by the end of the 2012 (note that this article was written prior to 12/21/12, and more people in Kansas City have awakened even as of this writing). Doug Bentley, awakened spiritual guide/monk at Oneness University, reminds us, “awakening is a continuous journey, not a final destination.” Ron affirms: “Each day I expe-

thinks in whole different ways. Emotionally, there’s a new depth of peace and calm. Spiritually, awareness is extremely present all the time.” Surprisingly, Ron knew little about awakening prior to his shift. He says: “You don’t have go to India, be on the path forever or do anything special to awaken — it’s a neurobiological shift. You don’t have to retreat to a cave for 20 years and say a mantra 24 hours a day. You don’t have to read the books or understand it. You can be a truck driver or a stay-at-home mom. ansas City’s famed Farm to Market Bread Company is pleased to unveil their new look and location. 7 Tips on How to Beat Those New Year's Resolution Blues & Make Change Stick

C

ontrary to what you might think after having set out to keep your New Year's Resolutions in the past, only to see them dissolve in frustration and failure, the brain is the organ of change. The concept in neuroscience called neuroplasticity demonstrates that the brain alters itself every time we learn something new. Our nerve cells are specially arranged by what we learn, what we remember, what we experience, what we feel and what we envision. Our 100 billion brain cells are always communicating with the rest of our anatomy. If you learn even one new bit of information today, tiny brain cells will make new connections within the living lattice work of your system. In other words, when we really change our mind, the brain changes...and then we can effect permanent, lasting change. Not more than thirty or forty years ago, there was a unanimous belief in biology that the brain was hardwired, meaning that we are born with a certain amount of neurological connections and the finality in life was that we were going to turn out like our parents. But with the advent of the latest technologies in functional imagery it is apparent that it is very possible to make the brain work differently. In fact, research out of the University of Wisconsin has proven something as simple as attention or focused concentration is a skill just like golf or tennis. In other words, the more you practice being mindful the better you get at it. So if you want to make change stick, here are seven initial steps to start you on the path: 1) INTENTION, INTENTION, INTENTION! Write a clear and simple resolution statement. This tells your brain that you mean it. Make sure your mission statement creates a positive feeling for you. Avoid words such as not and don't. Make your resolution specific. Instead of saying you want to eat healthier, say, "I will eat a fresh healthy salad once a day so that I look better and feel better about myself." Your intention is your mental compass. The clearer your purpose, the better you know where you are going and how you will get there.

City success story. Established in 1993 by Master Bread Maker Mark Friend, in the back of the Classic Cup in Westport, the company started out trading bread for rent. After quickly finding a loyal following, Farm to Market Bread Company moved into the Waldo neighborhood where it stayed from 1995-2012. 2) SPONSORING THOUGHTS! List strong reasons about why you want to change. This is the biggest secret to making change stick. You should feel passionate about each one of these thoughts. Be specific. For example, if you are interested in losing weight, one reason could be to wear your mother's wedding dress for your wedding ceremony in five months. If intention gives you your direction, then your sponsoring thoughts are the fuel to get you going each day in your direction.

5) TRACK YOUR CHANGES! Create a reward system for yourself. If you can create a chart that you can see or a ledger you review daily and then check your wins off daily, you will begin to make your discipline and changes a new habit....and build a new feeling of self esteem, worth and belief that you are doing it. If however, you fall from grace one day, make the choice to get back into your routine the very next day without wallowing in failure, guilt and self-depreciation. These emotions will surely undermine your efforts and cause you to return to the old self that may have already 3) REVIEW, REMIND AND PRIME! felt that way for too long. Duck Confit with Olives, Onions, Garlic & Herbs and a Potato Cake Prepared by Executive Chef Debbie Gold “In the Kitchen with Bonnie” at The American Restaurant For the Confit 1 whole duck, about 3 lbs 1 cup coarse salt 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 1 tablespoon crushed rosemary 1 fresh bay leaf, torn into several pieces 15 garlic cloves, peeled 10 cloves 2 gallons rendered duck fat Remove the duck from its wrapper. Take out the neck and innards. Rinse the whole duck under cold running water. Pat dry. Combine the salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, bay leaf in a large mixing bowl. Place the duck in the bowl, sprinkle mixture over the duck, making sure a thin layer of salt remains on the bottom. Pierce the garlic with the cloves and bury them in the salt around the duck. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 24 hours. Remove the duck from the refrigerator and wipe off the herb and salt mixture with a damp towel. Reserve the garlic with the cloves. Over medium heat, melt the rendered duck fat in a large, heavy casserole or Dutch oven. When the fat is warm but not hot, add the whole duck, making sure the duck is completely covered in duck fat. Add the garlic studded with cloves. Place in a 300 degree oven and cook slowly for 1½ to 2 hours or until the meat is tender and can be easily pierced. Drain the duck, and place it on a rack, uncovered, in the refrigerator for 5 to 6 hours, or even better, overnight. The skin should be somewhat dry at this point. (The drier the skin, the crisper it will be after cooking). Pass the duck fat through a very fine sieve and return to original container. Cool and keep refrigerated and use for sautéing.

For the Roast 3 large Spanish onions, peeled and quartered 2 heads garlic, cut in half across the cloves 3 sprigs fresh thyme 2 cups Mediterranean olives, drained 1 bay leaf 1 spoonful duck fat Heat a heavy casserole or Dutch oven over medium heat. Melt duck fat and add onions, garlic, herbs and olives. Sautee for 3 minutes. Place the duck on the bed of onions and roast it in a 425-degree oven for 20 minutes, or until nicely browned and crisp all over. For the Potato Cakes 2 Russet potatoes, peeled Salt Freshly ground black pepper Rendered duck fat Grate the potatoes using the biggest hole. Grate on a box grater into a mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Gently mix. Heat enough duck fat to measure about ½ inch deep in a large, heavy skillet. Form the grated potatoes into 6 cakes. Be careful placing potato in pan as moisture will make the fat pop. Add as many cakes as will comfortably fit without crowding. Flatten them slightly after you put them in the pan. Cook the cakes until browned and crispy on both sides, turning once. Remove cakes and blot on paper towels. Sprinkle with a bit more salt.

ontrary to popular views of Victorian masses living with disease and squalor, researchers Paul Clayton and Judith Rowbotham have identified a 30 year period between 1850 and 1880 where working class British enjoyed better health than we do now. Their research reveals that life expectancy at age five was as good or better than today and that degenerative disease rates were 10% of ours. Through analysis of historical records, they’ve determined how they achieved this feat and how they later succumbed to ill health. In the 1840s, the protective Corn Laws were repealed, making food affordable and ending a period of poor nutrition, even starvation amongst the working class. Crop rotation eliminated the need for land to lay fallow and increased food production. Railroads brought fresh food to cities daily. All food was grown organically. By 1850, the health of the working class had improved to the point that “Britain and its world-dominating empire were supported by a workforce, an army and a navy comprised of individuals who were healthier, fitter and stronger than we are today. They were almost entirely free of the degenerative diseases which maim and kill so many of us, and although it is commonly stated that this is because they all died young, the reverse is true; public records reveal that they lived as long – or longer – than we do in the 21st century.” Sewage treatment, surgery and drugs had yet to be developed. So, what was responsible for this golden age of health? Clayton and Rowbotham attribute it entirely to their superior diet. The historical record reveals this generation had relatively little access to alcohol and tobacco; and due to their correspondingly high intake of fruits, whole grains, oily fish and vegetables, they consumed levels of minerals and phytonutrients at approximately ten times the levels considered normal today. January 2013

So how did they lose it? The 1880’s ushered in a new era of food processing. Fruit, previously boiled or eaten raw, was now bathed in heavy syrup. Milk, rarely consumed due to lack of refrigeration, was readily available as sweetened condensed milk. White flour replaced whole grains. The increased sugar consumption caused such damage to the nation’s teeth that by 1900, most people could no longer chew tough foods and were unable to eat many vegetables, fruits and nuts. 50% of young men volunteering for the armed services were rejected because they were undernourished not from starvation, but from eating this new processed diet. Clayton and Rowbotham conclude that “that medical advances allied to the pharmaceutical industry’s output have done little more than change the manner of our dying. The Victorians died rapidly of infection or trauma, whereas we die slowly of degenerative disease.” Contrary popular belief, they state, twentieth century healthcare serves only to suppress the symptoms of degenerative diseases which are rampant due to our failure to maintain mid-Victorian nutritional standards, and that only way out is to increase the nutrient density of our diet.

Feature—by Kahla Wheeler Welcoming the Malvaceae Family into Your Life

Y

ou are invited on a journey that will introduce you to the Malvaceae Family and its most popular Genus, Althaea, or better known as Marshmallow. The group of plants is vast in its ability to heal our bodies by soothing our mucus membranes and healing our emotions by soothing our relationships. A closer look at Althaea will help us use this plant wisely and effectively. Here is just a quick note on our overall relationship with plants before we begin. I recently was at an herbal conference where a noted herbalist was sharing her thoughts on how we approach plants in our daily lives. She is adamant that we cannot continue to think that plants are here solely for our use, rather than to cocreate with us a new world. I agree that we must co-create with plants, animals, stones and all life forces to build a world for all to share and relish. We all need to feel needed, and so it is with the plants. I believe that the plants are our ancestors and we are their children. Plants feed us, clothe us, shelter us and heal us. Is this not what we do for our children? Can you find a place within yourself where there is plant energy? If so, then you have a relationship with plants and plants are important to you. So now, we will go back to Althaea. The marshmallow family is well known for its ability to soothe mucous membranes with its demulcent qualities especially in the digestive tract and respiratory system. Demulcents make tissue slippery, soft and moist without creating mucous. Remember back to the last time you had a cold or the flu and wanted something to take away the dry, raspy cough and tightness in the chest? It is easy and quick to make a marshmallow infusion for this purpose. Here’s how:

Start with ½ cup of marshmallow root, cut and sifted style (available at bulk herb stores). Place in a quart jar and add ¾ quart of cold water. Let this mixture sit on the counter for 1-2 hours, then drain out the plant material (keep reserved) and drink the remaining mixture. Although it is slippery, it is also very soothing. You can reuse the plant material one more time but the resulting liquid will not be quite as slippery. This marshmallow infusion has a very mild laxative quality but rarely results in diarrhea or adverse effects. Allergic reactions to marshmallow are extremely rare, and it is considered safe for you by herbalists, pharmacists and doctors that study herbal medicines. You might be wondering if the bags of marshmallows we use to roast over the fire come from this plant, and these once did but modern marshmallows are made from corn syrup. If you want to try the old fashion favorites, here’s the recipe: Marshmallow Candies 4 T marshmallow roots 9 T, plus 1 t white sugar 20 t gum tragacanth or gum Arabic 2 cups scented water such as rose water or orange flower water (plain water will work too) 1 large or 2 small egg whites, well beaten Make a tea of marshmallow roots by simmering them in a pint of water for twenty to thirty minutes. Add additional water if needed to retain a full 2 cups. Strain out the roots. Heat the gum and marshmallow (water) in a double boiler until they are dissolved together. Strain this mixture through a cheesecloth and squeeze the cloth ball to force the mixture through. Stir in the sugar as quickly as

possible. When dissolved, add the wellbeaten egg whites, stirring constantly, but take the pan off the fire and continue to stir. Lay out on a flat surface. Let cool, and cut into smaller pieces. This recipe takes some practice, but a couple of tries and you will have the hang of it. The signature of marshmallow has a plant chromatic or chakra that channels universal energy. The chromatic color of marshmallow is green-yellow. This means that it aids us in connecting our heart chakra energy with our solar plexus energy helping us soothe and smooth relationships. I also like to use another member of the Malvaceae family, hibiscus flowers with a botanical name of Rosa Sinensis. Hibiscus is high in vitamin C, has a great flavor and an appealing, bright color. Hibiscus tea is delicious both hot and cold. If you find it in bulk, just add 3-5 blossoms to your teacup, cover with hot water and let steep for 3-5 minutes. I like to add a bit of spearmint too and a small amount of honey for sweetness. The third plant within the Malvaceae family that we readily use is okra…we use the edible seedpods for frying and making gumbo. Some people do not like okra because they say that it is slimy but there is a way to avoid the slim and still get the benefits. The best way is to grow your own okra. That way you can pick it when it is small and tender; but most of us will buy it at the farmers market. Again, choose pods that are small and very green denoting freshness. I use them the day I get them, cut them into bitesized pieces, coat with a bit of cornmeal and pan fry quickly in olive oil. If the pods are larger or I cannot determine when the pods were picked, then I use them in soup to thicken such as a gumbo. There are great recipes online for gumbo. I particularly like

undalini Yoga is relatively new to the West. It was kept secret for thousands of years and taught by a Master to only a chosen few, who would have to prove their worthiness of the teachings. Yogi Bhajan realized the need in the West, and was the first to teach it openly. He came to the United States in 1969. His philosophy was “We are in the desert, I have water”. He did not want a following. Rather, he trained teachers and sent them around the world to spread the Yogic teachings. Kundalini Yoga and Meditation is the yoga of awareness. Through the art of physical exercise, breath work, mudra, meditation and sound, we can achieve our goal with grace and dignity. The mind will play games, but our bodies will always bring us back to our truth. It is a complete technology that will change the biochemistry of our bodies and brains. The objective of Kundalini Yoga, is to awaken the full potential of human awareness, to expand the awareness to our unlimited self, creating a power within, a deep stillness and ability to deeply listen and transform into a radiant being. Through this practice, turning inward through meditation we can become still, so we can discover the cause of our pain and disconnect. Through exercising conscious breathing we can control our mind, and connect with our soul. The penetrating energy of Kundalini Yoga clears the chakras, fears depart, joy comes in and you can start living according to your inner truth facing life with a new awareness. 86…The numbers registered on the digital scale triggered absolute horror and embarrassment. Wow. I had no idea I had allowed it to go that far. Quickly calculating in my head, I realized I was 14 pounds away from 300 pounds. 300 POUNDS!!! The slender spa lady chirped, “286 — now for your consult,” and gestured toward an office door as I stepped gingerly off the scale, attempting to will myself suddenly thin. After asking a few questions, she launched into furiously punching numbers into a calculator. “Let’s see…you have 112 pounds to lose…52 weeks of program plus a 12week maintenance period…a starter pack of supplements…that will be $972 to get started,” she proclaimed. Nine hundred. And. Seventy-two. Dollars. !!!!!!! Searching for the fastest way out, I thanked her for her time and quickly exited stage right, booking it for the door past all the curvy women waiting their turn at the Scale of Shame. Safe in the comfort and privacy of my car, I reviewed my last known weigh-in. October 2009. 255 and holding. That was over 3 years ago, before I knew I was pregnant, when I still cared what I weighed. Following the birth of my son, I spent my days in a haze of hourly feedings; my baby boy nestled in my arms, happily nursing away. I ate whatever, whenever. His nourishment and his comfort were my focus. Tending to myself was barely on the radar! I liked it that way. I liked making sure everyone else was cared for and fed. But my back ached from carrying the extra weight and my knees struggled when climbing the stairs to my bedroom. My baby boy grew, becoming mobile and active. I struggled to keep up with his ever-increasing energy level, feeling drained and exhausted all the time. In March 2012, I worked with an intuitive healer and asked, “Do you see anything about my health?” She scanned my energy field. “You’re insulinresistant,” she proclaimed, matter-of-fact. Suddenly, it all clicked into place. My body doesn’t know what to do with sugar. Of course! Nor does it know what to do with anything that converts quickly into sugar. I realized all the years spent trying one diet after the next was truly just a distraction from what I really needed to do. We all know what we’re “supposed” to do. Eat less and exercise more. Oh if it were only that simple! All my life, I dreamed of losing weight. I imagined myself thin, active, wearing normal size clothes. But my actions didn’t line up with my desires. I was too emotionally tied to the weight to simply let it go. In order to lose the weight, I had to be willing to address the core issue creating my unconscious need for it. I realized I came into this life as an empath, an intuitive, sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others. I quickly became able to respond to the unspoken needs of those around me, serving as a caretaker at a very young age. When I was ten, my father died suddenly from a heart attack and I assumed his role of caring for my mother. Always the strong one, I put myself last

Step 3: Explore the truth about the obstacles you create to keep you from your dreams. Step 4: Get support. Step 5: Love yourself enough to take action in alignment with your true desire. Step 6: Nurture yourself through your process. Step 7: LIVE YOUR DREAM! but I put food first. The remedy for my grief was to eat mindlessly as I desperately tried to fill the aching, constant void in my heart. I was too young to understand what I was doing. I knew HOW I got fat; I just didn’t fully understand WHY I was fat. I developed a need for protection, some sort of barrier between the world and me. Years of denying my feelings, ignoring my grief, people-pleasing and caring for others while I put myself last resulted in my body carrying over 130 pounds of excess weight. What I carried physically was an absolute manifestation of what I was carrying emotionally. Through intense soul searching, loving assistance with a soul retrieval from a dear shaman-sister, hours of journaling and much emotional expression, release, and integration, I was able to make choices that aligned with my true desire. In May 2012, I drastically reduced my consumption of flour, sugar, and simple carbohydrates and increased my intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. I spoke to my body, re-programming my cells to release the code of storing fat for protection. I practiced Conscious Eating by pulling my focus into my body and being truly present every time I ate. The lifelong battle with my weight transformed into simple action aligned with the most beautiful life I could imagine for myself! My creativity erupted, unencumbered by the need to numb my feelings. My shadow self stepped into the light, freed from years of on-again, off-again depression. My spirit soared, finally being fully acknowledged for the brilliant purpose I carried within. Today, I am over halfway to my goal of a 100 pound weight loss! I am passionate about helping women and men work at a soul level to release any excess weight (physical, emotional, and spiritual) they are unnecessarily carrying. In my private practice as a Spiritual Counselor providing therapy for the soul, I fulfill my dream of being a Way Shower for others. Try these tips: Conscious Eating — Get in your body! Pull your spirit into your body as you consume your food. • Don’t substitute True Pleasure for Food Pleasure — Give yourself what you truly want, not a doughnut as a poor substitution. • Explore Emotions, Don’t Numb Yourself to Them — Your emotions are keys to unlock your personal Mystery. Journal, process, explore, investigate. • Self Care means PLANNING — You are so worth it! Take the time necessary to shop for your favorite fruits and vegetables, explore healthy recipes, and cook delicious, nourishing healthy meals. • Maintain Blood Sugar Levels — Eat a little something every three hours. A handful of almonds, a protein bar, a piece of cheddar with a small apple, carrots sticks and hummus, ½ an avocado. • The Right Fitness Choice for You — To be successful, you have to choose something that fits into your lifestyle, something you can commit to doing regularly, and something that you will love! •

Feature—by Chris Lamb Begin Again

S

o, it's that time of year again. We've over-indulged, been to a number of parties, maybe self-medicated with a little too much sugar or alcohol as we enjoyed once-a-year pleasures. Ugh. What usually follows is a desire to purge the extra pounds and feel good--inside and out. Many people make resolutions that include major lifestyle changes and new choices that will make us 'better' this year, healthier, slimmer, stronger, happier. These are all admirable goals; but often they are given up on early in the year, despite the diet and exercise industries' efforts to browbeat us into buying their latest products. How can we keep mindful of our health and happiness day after day when we're so busy, so overloaded, and fast easy food abounds? Most people who have been successful at changing their habits share a few methods. First, you have to develop self-awareness as to what your triggers and habits are, and then you have to institute replacements that are more in line with what you want your life to look like and who you want to be. This should be done gradually, making one change at a time and becoming comfortable with it before tackling another issue. For instance, say you decide to cut out caffeine or soda. You could change to half-caff coffee, or limit your morning intake and substitute herbal or green teas in the afternoon. Likewise, you can replace your soda fix with something healthier-juice, flavored water, or plain water. As you get used to less sugar and caffeine, you can keep gradually decreasing until you are free. Once you've kicked a habit, don't despair if you choose to have a "real" cup of coffee once in a while…just make sure it is a conscious choice and not a reactionary one. And in the event you do backslide, don't beat yourself up over it; start anew the next time the choice is presented. The 'new year' is a good time to reevaluate and recommit to goals; but, it is not the only time we can begin again. If you wanted to explore becoming a vegetarian or vegan, you could treat yourself to a Communiversity class to learn some new recipes or styles and experiment one day a week; then as you become more familiar with the ingredients and seasonings you could add in a second day each week. Have a dinner party and share your newfound skills with friends; maybe they'd like to

learn too! Kansas City is fortunate to have a healthy sampling of vegetarian and vegan restaurants (FuD, Cafe Gratitude, Eden Alley, MudPie Coffeehouse) and even more places with a great selection of meatless meals (Blue Koi, Lulu's Noodles, Succotash, Ghenghis Khan, The Mixx, to name a few favorites). As you gradually adjust your food choices you will find the right balance for yourself. Your everyday diet will not look exactly like anyone else's; but that doesn't make it wrong — it makes it yours. A key ingredient to successfully evolving your personal habits is self-respect and self-love. The first precept of yoga is Ahimsa, loving kindness; and the first person to whom you must grant this is yourself. Stop berating yourself for not being "perfect" or "enough"--you are already both of those things. Would you speak to anyone else that way? We all play a significant role that could not possibly be done by anyone else, ever. Think of it, how completely unique and irreplaceable you are, and be grateful to be playing! Yoga is a practice that is available to anyone, young or old, smooth or wrinkly, large or small,

stretchy or stiff. My favorite graphic shows a side view of an iceberg, with the visible tip labeled "asana" (poses) and the much greater submerged mass labeled "the rest of yoga." Aha! While the poses are what most people think of as yoga, they are more a vehicle to help you arrive at self-awareness, embodiment, focus, concentration, forgiveness, connection, and ultimately the realization of your divine inner Self. That's an overwhelming thought, a goal that seems unattainable at first, so once again we look to the masters and learn to take baby steps. Check out the many and varied studios and teachers all over the greater Kansas City metro area and find one that resonates with you--where you feel at home. All studios offer Basics classes and most teachers will do private lessons with you (more expensive, of course). Or perhaps you'd rather try some classes at the YMCA or your church (some teachers offer free or low-cost classes at their places of worship as part of their service). Research the different types of yoga…would you prefer Ashtanga, with its set poses that you learn and repeat in every session, or a Vinyasa class, with more flow and diversity of movement from class to class? Try both and see--it's all good. Become familiar with the poses and begin to let go of your ego's inhibitions about how you look as you learn. Anyone who is judging your appearance in a yoga class is not practicing their own yoga! As you progress and feel you have a better command of your body and your chattering monkey mind, you will begin to see these new skills apply to your life off the mat. You will have more compassion and patience, with yourself and the people around you. You'll gain control of your over-busy mind and learn to focus on and enjoy things in the moment. You'll learn to stop worrying and live with less stress. You'll sleep better, move more easily, feel calmer and happier. Deep change happens gradually. All you need to do is begin, as many times as it takes. It is your path, not like anyone else's. Be kind to yourself-body and mind--and watch what the new year brings!

January 2013

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels January 2013 Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! This will be a powerful time for visualizing goals and setting intentions. In meditation, visualize what you want to accomplish in any area of your life. Even talk aloud about your concepts so they become more real to you. Write out affirmations as if they have already happened to increase their power. By February, some goals will start to manifest! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Don’t get frustrated if things seem slow or irritating at work. Quiet reflection and affirmations during meditation will do more than complaining about situations, or trying to push ahead through blocks. Let your spiritual vision pave the road of harmony. Take gentle actions later this month, when you don’t feel so tense. Use this same plan if having family or home drama! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Even though it’s a new year, the January energy about letting go of disappointments and old anger from the past two years. Meditate to forgive yourself and others for things that didn’t work out. Cleanse your heart because those old hopes and desires don’t even fit who you are today! You’ll be able to set new goals about work, relationships, and health – that have to do with the “current you”. February will bring results and success! Aries (March 21 – April 19) Be careful about jumping to conclusions about colleagues. You might feel that a work buddy has betrayed you, when it’s just about egos temporarily clashing. Don’t neglect meditation time, since that’s when you can let off spiritual steam and re-center! By late January, everything will smooth out. You might even see your passionate viewpoints blend harmoniously after all. (You’ll also find this dynamic with romantic relationships!)

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Be patient about frustrations at work and in your marriage/ partnership. It’s easy to dwell on the negative right now. Meditate on gratitude about these troubled areas of your life. Make a written list! This will calm your ego and allow your intuition let you know if there are changes to make, or boundaries to draw. When you’re in your highest consciousness, you won’t brood sullenly – or alternatively, you won’t lash out. You’ll be able to forgive, move on, and make things work harmoniously in a fairly effortless way. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Your lesson this month is waiting patiently for results of your actions. When you meditate, release expectations of perfect bliss. Look for subtle changes, like more consistent moods and less emotional reactions. Listen for little hints of intuition and follow the promptings. In relationships, take risks of trust by opening up more -- but allow time to let deeper intimacy develop. Don’t shut down if intense and immediate shifts don’t happen. Breathe and allow life to unfold! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You’re so sensitive to rejection! Meditate to release past hurts from all sorts of people. When bonds with others are moving to a deeper level, old fears of abandonment arise because the risk level is increasing. By clearing out old

pain, you won’t automatically grasp on to the anxiety that tells you rejection is coming. Risk isn’t always followed by heartache – it can be followed by incredible love and closeness that’s worth confronting your inner demons for! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You might be starting a new relationship, or going to an exciting new level with a current partnership! Here’s the catch – the momentum is so strong that you will likely get controlling or overly stubborn. This is a cover-up for fear. Meditate and think about how your parents coped with change. You might be mimicking one or both of them – gasp!! Also try creative movement to heal old beliefs and negative thought patterns – yoga, tai chi, or dance. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) If you have trouble meditating, either concentrating or sticking with a routine, ask your spouse/ partner for help. Meditating together is powerful and is a great way to gain new levels of intimacy. If single, ask a disciplined friend to help. It doesn’t have to be “mystical” – you can merely visualize things happening smoothly in your day, or releasing the day if it’s nighttime. As always, ward off negativity with gratitude lists and positive affirmations! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) If you’re feeling vulnerable in your relationship, meditate on prosperity. If you feel “poor”, you can transfer that anxiety to fear of rejection. If single, also contemplate how your earning potential, amount of debt or perception of your looks create your sense of value as a human. You are lovable unconditionally! Take a deep breath and let that spiritual reality penetrate your heart! These issues are likely caused by family-oforigin messages. Even if old and rooted, toss the ideas out because they aren’t true!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You need some discipline with your health. Pay attention to food choices and stress reduction. Your body is generally strong and can withstand poor care, but with Saturn in your sign for over two years, you must respect your fleshly existence! Meditate on physical goals you'd like to accomplish. Visualize yourself following your plan. As your body heals, you'll feel more spiritually peaceful. Relationships improve because you'll have emotional energy when you're physically balanced. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Irritations with others have a deep history. Meditate and reflect on how you've been trained by family to handle resentments and aggression over the past 30 years (a Saturn cycle). You can break these old unconscious programs that seem to be set in concrete! Meditating to forgive people, situations, institutions, and yourself gives peace and internal freedom to be truly joyous! When you feel angry, keep your mouth closed -- open your unconscious instead to see what's at the root! Aluna Michaels is a secondgeneration astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practitioner.
