Dear Friend,

Recently, life threw several personal challenges toward me. What came as a surprise was the awareness of how this inner discord directly affected my outer world, my home. My inner and outer worlds, so intertwined, were reflecting back to me the temporary turmoil of my existence. Normally tidy to a fault, I began noticing areas of clutter and discord. So, I made of list of areas to organize. And felt overwhelmed. Instead, I committed to cleaning and organizing just one area a week while doing my regular cleaning. It feels glorious! Sometimes I tackle more than planned; but usually, I am able to let go of the need to do more as I see progress — and the peace that comes from organized, simplified, living. I always marvel at how my inner and outer realities reflect back to each other. Like the chicken and the egg, I don't know whether a peaceful inner attitude brings an organized outer self; or, if by keeping my living space clean I create peace. All I know is that it works for me... Cleanliness of home begets cleanliness of mind and feelings of peace. And so, we offer this special issue on organized living with a focus on Feng Shui. I look at the chest I recently cleared and moved to another area of my dining room and I feel the expansion, the clarity and the plain ole cleanliness of stirring up the healthy energy in the room and creating space.

Walk the Path to Healing We can use our pain — emotional or physical — as a catalyst to begin healing, not just curing. —Dr. Dean Ornish Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way. —Nichiren Daishonin, Buddhist Teacher

D

r. Ornish, author of many books on health and healing says, “To me, ‘curing’ means only getting back to the way we were before we became diseased. ‘Healing’ is when we use our pain or illness as a catalyst to begin transforming our lives — healing our relationships, our hearts and our souls.” The journey that begins with discomfort, often agony, can be the opening of another chapter of greater joy, peace and depth of life. It is a choice one makes when faced with pain. Jane Fonda in her TED talk on “The Third Act of Life” talked about a remarkable man dealing with his illness. Neil Selinger was a well-known and successful attorney for 31 years when he retired at age 54, ready to follow his dreams. He volunteered, spent time with his family and pursued his long interest in writing by taking a class. He began writing a memoir of his childhood, which he had never had the time to do. At age 56 he was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. His physical health began to deteriorate rapidly. He found himself changing from his very busy life to one that was quieter and much less active. He wrote, “My mind moves in slower motion as I watch the light and anticipate the simple joys that await me in the morning.” As his disease progressed he expressed his thoughts in an essay. “As my muscles weakened, my writing became stronger. As I slowly lost my speech, I gained my voice. As I diminished, I grew. As I lost so much, I finally started to find myself.” He died at age 57, having accomplished his dreams, publishing the book, A Sloan Product: A Memoir of a Lost Boy. Illness and pain does not always end in death. In fact, the challenge is to face the pain or illness and find a way to heal one’s self. Dr. Ornish’s distinction between curing and healing is a very important one. I surely have always wanted a cure when my physical pain or illness was interfering with my life. The surprise is that as one seeks the cure, healing may occur. As a therapist I work with people who have emotional pain like depression, anxiety, grief or relationship issues; but, I also see people who are looking for ways to reduce physical pain without

Chronic pain causes depression, stress and anxiety. Add that to the typical load of stress we all carry and the result is a heavy dose of both physical and emotional pain. The challenge is to find ways to be in the moment, learning to self-calm and shut down the pain signals long enough to allow the body to begin healing.

drugs. I use the Neurobehavioral Program developed by Dr. John Leonard to reduce pain, stress and negative emotions. I have often found that as people learn to lessen the physical pain, the emotional pain surfaces more intensely. Physical and emotional pain have no boundary and are inter-connected. As one learns the process of calming and relaxing the body, the mind can be more alert and awake, focusing on that sense of inner quiet and peace. Neil Selinger discovered that as his disease made him physically stop, his mind and spirit began to awaken in new ways. He discovered the process of allowing the pain or the illness to give birth to new parts of himself. The pain or illness is our teacher as we move from curing to healing. Whatever challenges, you or those you care about, are experiencing, I hope that you can walk that path to healing, transforming your life in new ways. Let’s Get Naked—by Heidi Alfrey The Dance of Your Life: Did you Forget the Steps?

D

o you remember an activity that you loved as a child? What was it? Most of us eventually forget the playful times of our youth and get very busy in creating a life that serves the "outer" versus the "inner" needs. One day someone might ask you, “How do you play?” and you won’t be able to come up with an answer. Jesus told us “become like little children to enter the Kingdom of God,” Matthew 18; the point being we must keep the inner child alive in order to truly live. The drive for achievement and recognition can suck the fun right out of life. Laura Brooke was caught in this trap. She’d become a “human doing” rather than a “human being.” Today, as she reflects back, she says her life had become so busy, that she would miss the signs on the road because she was so distracted by “the next thing” on her daily “to do” list. Yoga classes were one of the few ways Laura could create peace in her world. In fact, one day in the early 90's, she heard herself say to her son …"I’d love to be a yoga teacher."Almost 15 years later (you know how we can sometimes put off those inspired ideas), her son came across a scholarship for

yoga training and suggested his mom look into it…from the mouths of babes. She applied for the scholarship, received it and found herself realizing that she now had no excuse to ignore her heart’s desire. Laura received her Hatha yoga certificate, and after a few years of volunteer teaching, she started officially teaching this year. Yoga was an important break for Laura to leave the usual rat race of her life…but more was to be revealed. Remember I posed a question at the top of the article: “What activity did you love as a child?” for Laura it was dancing. If you stay on this path of awakening and stop pushing your Good away, you will continue to be guided back to that which is your gift. In a synchronistic series of events, Laura’s Truth became revealed. Her 91year-old mother received a letter from a childhood friend of Laura’s, named Lynda, announcing the opening of her dance studio. Lynda and Laura used to

dance together as youngsters, so Laura was quite intrigued by this news. She decided to look up Lynda’s life and, as she did, she discovered the word, Nia, in association with the new studio. She’d never heard of Nia, but loved its description. The next day she rode her bike to a Nia class in her neighborhood. After the first exposure to Nia, Laura knew this was hers to share with the world. Her inner child had come alive…that is authenticity, getting naked. After completing her white belt teacher training in Nia, Laura contacted Lynda, a woman she’d been out of touch with for 26 years. They connected on the love of this form of dance and the spiritual freedom it reignited in both. Laura just recently returned from a trip to visit Lynda and her family. They laughed, danced and celebrated two lives that had regained their playfulness. Lynda shared with Laura that seeing her so happy in her life, the past memories and present joys of their mutual love

Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes The 84th Problem The "lesson" I get is when we learn to accept the realities of our life, the path to love and enlightenment becomes easier.

I

enjoy studying Eastern philosophy as it helps me accept personal responsibility. Some of the old Zen stories are so old I find many variations. Victor, a yogi from Tulsa, wrote his book on bridging Eastern and Western mind. How kind of him to mail me a copy. I could not put it down. I laughed out loud teaching yoga class as I was sharing this wonderful story: One afternoon a farmer took a trip to find the Buddha as he heard the great teacher might help him find relief from his suffering. “I’m a farmer,” he said to the Buddha, “and I love farming. But last summer we had a drought and nearly starved, while this summer, we had too much rain and some of my crops did not survive.” The Buddha sat and listened to the farmer. “My wife is a great woman and a good wife. But sometimes she can really nag me. And to tell you the truth, sometimes I get a little tired of her.” The Buddha continued to listen and smile, as the farmer continued. “I’ve got three kids. They’re really great. But sometimes they don’t listen to me and don’t pay me the respect I deserve.” It went on like this for a long while. He complained about his aches and pains and went on to whine about his neighbors, his selfish brother-in-law and the taxes. He probably complained about 80-something problems. Then the farmer waited for the Buddha to solve his problems. “Sorry I can’t help you,” the Buddha said. (This is where I laugh out loud!) “What!” yelled the farmer, “I’ve heard that you are a great master. How can you not help me?” “Well,” the Buddha replied, “First of all, everyone has problems. In fact, everyone’s got about 83 problems, like you. Of course, you may fix one now and then, but another one will pop up in its place. If you think about it, everyone you know and all that you care for is subject to change — it’s all impermanent. And you yourself are going to die someday. Now there’s a problem.” The farmer was red in the face.

“What kind of teacher are you!? How is this supposed to help me?!” he retorted. “Well….perhaps I can help you with the 84th problem,” the Buddha answered. “What 84th problem?” the farmer asked. “You don’t want to have any problems.” The moral of this story is our work to find new perspectives and perhaps convert our problems into opportunities. For example, someone in debt may decide to follow Dave Ramsey's step-by-step program to become free of debt. The "lesson" I get is when we learn to accept the realities of our life, the path to love and enlightenment becomes easier. I find “the 84th problem” works well in relationships. Lucky me, I have zen-like friends who share valuable insights. At lunch I complained to my wise friend how someone said unkind words to me in front of a group and I felt embarrassed and angry. She looked at me and said, “So what?” I look at her, wondering what happened to the empathy and then burst into laugher at her wisdom. “Yes,” I said, “So what! Her behavior has nothing to do with me, my self-value and self-love.” I just love a good story! And for the likes of me I do not yet know why I find this one so amusing. Hope you do as well, reader friend. Suzette Scholtes is Director of Teacher’s Training and Founder of The Yoga School of Therapeutics, 10400 W. 103rd Street, Overland Park. Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D. East Meets West in Cancer Treatment

O

n a recent journey to Tulsa, Oklahoma, I had the opportunity to visit and tour the Cancer Treatment Center of America. This center is more like a small hospital than a clinic as it provides a wide range of services. When I arrived, the reception was warm and friendly; the entrance was open, spacious and luxurious — more like a five-star hotel than a treatment center. Cancer Treatment Center of America (CTCA) in Tulsa opened 25 years ago and offers a truly unique model of care. The type of care offered is a fully integrated and innovative treatment model that combines advanced medical treatments, technologies and supportive therapies such as nutrition, naturopathic medicine and mind-body medicine to heal the whole person and improve quality of life. CTCA has complete care under one roof where patients are able to see all of their providers in one convenient place. At CTCA, surgery, radiation, imaging, nutrition, medical oncology, chiropractic care, rehabilitation, spiritual support, acupuncture — everything — is all under one roof. The doctors are a team of cancer experts, who have years of experience in oncology, so they can focus solely on offering advanced cancer treatments and technologies. Patients are at the center of all they do. Their multidisciplinary team of cancer experts work together and with the patient to create individual treatment plans, all based on the particular patient’s needs. Education and support are paramount in the treatment. A patient can be fully evaluated in a very short amount of time, usually within a week, with advanced medical imaging, including CT, PET, and MRI to diagnose the cancer and perform detailed laboratory tests in minimum turnaround times. After a complete and thorough diagnosis, the patient is introduced to his/her team of experts which include a medical oncologist, dietitian, naturopathic doctor and nurse case manager. The dietitian strives to keep the patient nourished, prevent malnutrition, rebuild body tissue and support immune function so patients may feel strong, energized and better able to tolerate treatment. The naturopathic doctor incorporates safe, natural therapies to help support normal metabolism, boost the body’s immune system and alleviate treatment-related side effects. The case manager, a registered nurse with oncology expertise, addresses patient’s medical questions and concerns, and helps coordinate and streamline patient care so the treatment plan runs smoothly. CTCA has advanced treatment and technologies: the GE Discovery PET/CT 600 scanner and Immunotherapy/ Biotherapy to mention a couple. This special PET/CT scan allows physicians to diagnose and stage tumors with improved accuracy to develop a more precise treatment plan, enables identification of very

small lesions and discernment of lesions… even with motion present caused by breathing or beating of the heart. This allows for more targeted and concentrated radiation treatment while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The Immunotherapy and biotherapy summons the strength of the immune system to help fight cancer. Alongside immunotherapy, they offer autologous (the patient’s stem cells) and allogenic (a donor’s stem cells) transplants. Spiritual support is also a key modality available at CTCA. The pastoral support team works within a patient’s belief system to help them draw upon faith and spirituality for peace, purpose and comfort in an effort to reduce stress and enhance overall well-being. The Mind-Body medicine therapist helps patients and their families cope with the disease and with treatment related issues, such as emotional and relationship concerns, anxiety and stress. CTCA tracks all survival statistics, quality of life parameters and patient satisfaction. These statistics are compared with those in the national database called the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER). CTCA patients generally do better with survival rates than the SEER results for many types of cancer. Quality of life is addressed by combining a variety of conventional and complementary therapies to help patients maintain better during treatment and after treatment. While most hospitals strive for high levels of patient satisfaction, CTCA goes one step further. Patient satisfaction surveys and weekly focus groups for patients and caregivers are held to insure optimal care. I was very impressed with the look and feel of the CTCA facility and all the staff and physicians that I met. I can highly recommend this facility to anyone with cancer and especially if they have a recurrence of cancer or a difficult case. If I had cancer, I would certainly consider using CTCA for my care and would recommend them highly. If you would like more information, go to cancercenter.com. They have facilities in Arizona, Oklahoma, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Revelations—by Bhasweti Gewhas Metaphysics of True Love

E

verybody wants to find true love in their life. Anyone who has ever lost a partner, gotten divorced or ended a relationship can attest that love can be one of life’s greatest blessings. What is the secret of finding true love in life? In my 10 years of working as a relationship healer and hypnotherapist, I have found people usually put a strong focus toward attracting the right partner in life — and they ignore their internal problems that prevent a kinship from developing. The search should start from inside your soul. If you feel inadequate and unloving of yourself, then you are not generating positive energy around yourself. The metaphysical Law of Attraction states that you attract energy similar to what you feel deep inside. If you do not love yourself then it is impossible to attract a partner who will truly love you. In order to find the love you are seeking, you need to develop higher self-esteem and self-love. In order to achieve selfworth you may consider the following steps: •Start making a list of things that you like about yourself. You may begin with physical attributes such as your eyes, your face or your hair. Eventually, add your personal and mental qualities. Perhaps you are caring and considerate or intelligent and creative. Rather than finding faults about yourself, focus on finding strengths. It won’t take long before you see things about yourself that you love. •Focus on finding opportunities where you can use your good qualities. If you are an outgoing person, explore how you can be helpful to others. It is important to remember: what you feel about yourself is important, as it helps to develop your self-worth. Do not depend on others’ approval to be your best. •Bring happiness and joy in your life. This step is extremely important. If you worry too much, or feel heavily burdened, it is time to give yourself a break and bring joy back into your life. Find someone who can spend some happy moments with you. Your companion doesn’t have to be your life partner. He or she can be a friend, co-worker, neighbor or a family member. Have a good time when you are alone, too. The more you become truly happy inside, the opportunity to attract someone who will truly admire you becomes much more likely. Remember that happiness attracts happiness. •Feel great about your achievements. Whenever you feel sad, depressed or negative, bring your mind back on your

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

July 2012

good qualities and your success. Realize that no one is perfect, and it is important to be happy rather than perfect. Observe your thoughts and feelings from time to time and release negativity. •Explore your creative outlets. Find ways to uplift your spirit. With higher energy, it is easier to enjoy life and attract a happy partner. Find time for selfnurturing, observing what truly brings you joy in life. It can be very simple — like spending more time in nature, walking your dog or doing yoga. Make some time to enjoy your own company. •Remember to unwind; set aside some time every day to relax and practice deep breathing. Be silent inside to contemplate what is going on in your life and focus on finding solutions to improve your situation. Do not feel overwhelmed to figure out everything that needs to change; but rather, make some feasible adjustments so that the quality of your life gradually improves. Big shift comes when you are consistently making smaller shifts. •While practicing to become happy, use meditation as an aide. Meditation will assist in finding your inner state of grace. As you silence your busy mind and listen to your own heartbeat, you become aware of your calm center. In this center you will find true self-love, joy and peace. Practice meditations daily, and you will create the supportive energy within yourself to attract true love in life. •Now it is time to take responsibility of our own life and relationships. As we understand that all love starts from inside and believe in our innate ability to improve life by using the metaphysical law of attraction, we shift in our mind. As our energy rises we comfortably attract greater opportunities for true love. ost of you have heard the term Standard American Diet, which describes the highly processed, meat, sugar and dairy-laden diet of most Americans. I’ve identified a “Standard American Healthy Diet.” I’ve traced it to food industry sponsored TV shows and websites. It’s typically composed of white meat, cheese, greek yogurt, packaged whole grain products, fruit, and very few vegetables. Standard American Healthy eaters know white sugar and high fructose corn syrup are bad so they favor Nutri-sweet, Splenda, xylitol, agave and stevia. It’s a step forward on the one hand — people have gotten the message that whole grains are better than white and red meat is linked to heart disease and cancer. Unfortunately, they think they are doing something to prevent chronic disease; but. most will end up in an oncologist’s office or in the cardiac cath lab, if they are lucky. Standard American Healthy isn’t healthy enough. Here’s how you can improve it.

Watermelon-Soup Shooter: Blend the following in a blender: 2 quarts cubed watermelon 4 Tbs lime juice, 2 Tbs brown sugar. Serve in frosted shot glasses.

Forget color. Ask what the animal ate. The natural diet of animals we most commonly eat — cattle, chickens, pigs and turkeys — is grass and bugs. It’s healthiest for them and for us. Even red meat is healthy if the cow ate grass until it was slaughtered. Chicken, eggs and turkey raised on corn and soy are just as unhealthy as red meat fed the same. They are all high in saturated fat and omega-6, pro-inflammatory fats. They are all low in the amino acid tryptophan, which we need to make the mood chemical serotonin. Drugs like Prozac keep serotonin around longer. I will go as far to say that the epidemic of mental illness in the western world may have its roots in how we feed the animals we eat. So if you want to be happy and

healthy, then eat a happy and healthy animal, which is one that eats it natural diet of grass until slaughter. Check the ads in this magazine for grass-fed producers or check the producers directory at kcfoodcircle.org. Skip milk products, Greek or Tasmanian. Feed lot animals are sick. That’s why they are routinely given antibiotics. Just like when we take antibiotics, the good bacteria in their digestive tracts are destroyed and bad bugs take over. That's why E. On top of that, milk protein promotes cancer and inflammatory conditions such as acid reflex, ear infections, sinusitis, osteoporosis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. We forget that milk products have been mass produced only for the past 80 to 100 years. Until then, we ate it fresh daily, straight from the grass-fed cow, without pasteurization or homogenization, and only in small amounts, like a condiment. Now, thanks to industry influence, milk is a food group, one you best do with out. I’ll address other ways to improve on Standard American Healthy next month. Until then, switch to grass-fed animal flesh, drop the milk products and see how much better you look and feel! Eating Well in Kansas City Feature Article—by Julie Danluk The Six Causes of Inflammation

E

very human will experience the pain of inflammation at some time in his or her life, so this book is for everyone. Inflammation is an immune response to injury, toxins, allergy, or infection, and causes pain, redness, heat, and swelling in the affected area. Since more than 70 percent of our immune system cells are found along the lining of our digestive tract, your immune response is hugely affected by the foods that interact with your gut. Do you consistently get a stomachache after eating your favorite ice cream? Has your doctor diagnosed you with “runner’s knee” even though you’ve never run past the corner store? If this sounds like you, you’re part of a growing population that struggles with chronic pain long before old age. It’s strange that North Americans over the age of thirty have started to accept pain as part of the aging process. With one in five people suffering from arthritis in Canada and the United States, fighting joint pain has become a top health care priority. Food allergies, which are often a root cause of pain, are also becoming increasingly common across North America because many foods are heavily processed, and we don’t have enough variety in our diet. We often choose the same popular menu items like wheat cereal for breakfast, wheat-bread sandwich for lunch, and wheat pasta for dinner. As a result, our immune system overreacts and we suffer the painful symptoms of allergies. Diagnosing a food allergy isn’t always easy; symptoms can be diverse. Regardless of the signal our body sends us, inflammation is the ultimate consequence of an allergic reaction. There are two basic types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain comes on quickly (for example, twisting an ankle), and lasts a relatively short period of time. The swelling, redness, heat, and inflamed nerve endings set off an alarm bell, warning the rest of the body that something is wrong. In this instance, inflammation serves a purpose and is a natural and necessary part of the healing process. However, when acute pain is not properly treated, it can develop into chronic pain (which stems from chronic inflammation). Chronic pain occurs when an initial pain response won’t go away, and the body continues to overreact long after the initial cause of pain has passed. Sadly, our views on chronic pain are all wrong. Chronic pain and discomfort should be rare at any age, and in each case it should be promptly addressed. Around the world, people who eat unprocessed nutritious foods all their lives remain limber and agile well into their senior years. Indigenous communities that have not adopted

Although injuries and sore joints are hard to ignore, less severe symptoms of inflammation … such as indigestion after meals, bleeding gums, or a patch of eczema that won’t clear up (despite using lots of anti-inflammatory creams) are easy to ignore for a long time. If left unchecked, these annoying little symptoms can lead to chronic inflammation and lifelong pain. the processed foods prevalent in Western societies remain free from epidemics such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and other inflammatory conditions. It’s high time we consider reducing inflammation. The ability to heal is within all of us. In some ways, it’s unfortunate that there are powerful analgesics (such as pharmaceutical painkillers) that effectively switch off the pain signal—after all, pain is supposed to warn you that something is wrong. Such medications allow you to continue functioning but prevent you from being able to keep in touch with your body’s messages. If you can’t feel pain, it will become more difficult to get to the root of your initial discomfort, and you won’t know whether your body is healing properly. Have you ever seen the commercial where a woman injures her knee and, instead of resting, she runs up a hill while saying, “I don’t let pain slow me down; I take [insert drug name] so I can continue with life”? Think about this for a second: if you ignore an injury and circumvent the pain response, you’re working outside your natural limits. As a result, you could be on a path to more serious injury, or your current injury may eventually lead to chronic pain. Although injuries and sore joints are hard to ignore, less severe symptoms of inflammation generally don’t attract your attention in the same way. Symptoms such as indigestion after meals, bleeding gums, or a patch of eczema that won’t clear up (despite using lots of antiinflammatory creams) are easy to ignore for a long time. If left unchecked, these annoying little symptoms can lead to chronic inflammation and lifelong pain. In order to heal your pain, you need to understand how chronic inflammation occurs. The MTHI plan will teach you how to give your body the foods it needs to repair itself. Inflammation plays a key role in the development of seemingly unrelated illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, eczema, psoriasis, and dementia. Conversely, as already mentioned, inflammation is also the natural result of the body’s response to injury or infection, and it stimulates the healing process. Unfortunately, this protective response of the immune system, if prolonged, can result in damage to the body’s organs. The World Health Organization reports that cardiovascular diseases, most of which are rooted in chronic inflammation, are the top causes of deaths internationally, and that “at least 80 percent of

premature deaths from cardiovascular heart disease and strokes could be prevented through a healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoiding the use of tobacco.” Chronic inflammation can be extremely serious, but it can also be silent enough to ignore until it’s too late. What’s the safest way to prevent the process of painful inflammation? The answer is to avoid problem foods and consume specific foods that contain powerful phytonutrients including antioxidants, which can quell the inflammatory fire in the digestive tract, joints, heart, and skin. Phytonutrients are compounds found in plants that aren’t classified as either vitamins or minerals and that aren’t required for normal functioning of the human body, but that have a beneficial effect on health (the prefix “phyto” is derived from the Greek word for “plant”). A Tale of Two Curries Ingredients: 3 cups chopped onions (about 3 medium bulbs) 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 tbsp chopped garlic 2.2 lb chicken thighs, skinned OR three 14 oz cans black beans 3 cups carrots, sliced into coins 2 cups chopped kale 1 tbsp minced ginger root 1 tbsp turmeric ½ tbsp cinnamon ½ tbsp ground coriander 1 tsp gray sea salt or pink rock salt 2 cups chicken or vegetable stock ½ lemon or 1 medium lime, zested and juiced 2 cups cauliflower or broccoli, cut into 2inch pieces ½ cup coconut milk ¼ cup tahini Directions: 1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, sauté the onions in the oil over mediumlow heat until soft, about 7 minutes. Spritz liberally with filtered water or broth to ensure the oil doesn’t overheat. 2. Add the garlic and sauté a few minutes more, being careful not to brown or burn it. Keep it gently toasted and golden. Then add chicken and brown for 5 minutes. 3. Add carrots, kale, spices, salt, and stock and gently simmer over low heat for 20 to 25 minutes. 4. Add the broccoli or cauliflower and lemon or lime zest and simmer for an-

other 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are al dente. If you prefer a tangy curry, add more citrus zest. 5. Stir in the lemon or lime juice, coconut milk, and tahini and mix thoroughly. Note: If you’re short on time, you can skip browning the chicken, or consider investing in a slow cooker. Just wait to add the coconut milk until right at the end, mixing it in just before you serve it. Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients: 2 cups skinned and diced celery root 2 cups diced Jerusalem artichokes 2 cups skinned and diced turnip 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil (plus 2 tbsp if making lentil version) 1 lb ground bison or turkey OR 2 cups cooked lentils 2 cups chopped onions 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp gray sea salt or pink rock salt 3 tbsp Italian herb blend (basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, savory, and/or thyme) 1 cup chopped carrots 1 cup diced sweet potato or yam 1 cup chopped celery 1 cup sweet peas 2 cups chopped fresh spinach ½ cup kasha (toasted buckwheat) ¼ cup fresh sage OR 1 tsp (5 mL) dry sage Directions: 1. Boil celery root, Jerusalem artichoke, and turnip in 3 cups (750 mL) of water until soft. Drain and mash with 2 tbsp (30 mL) olive oil. Set aside. 2. Brown the bison meat in a large pot over medium-low heat with onion, garlic, cumin seed, salt, and herbs. (If making the lentil version, heat 2 tbsp/30 mL olive oil over medium-low heat with onion, garlic, cumin seed, salt, and herbs before adding the lentils.) Spritz liberally with filtered water or broth to ensure the oil doesn’t overheat. 3. Add the carrots, sweet potato or yam, celery, peas, spinach, kasha, and sage. If cooking the lentil version, add ¾ cup (185 mL) of vegetable broth. Stir well and cook for 8 minutes. 4. Transfer to a 9 × 13–inch (20 cm × 30 cm) baking dish. Top with the mashed white root vegetables. 5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes. Move to the top rack position and broil on low for 5 minutes or until nicely browned. 7. Serve hot or allow to set in the fridge overnight. Excerpted with permission from Meals that Heal Inflammation by Julie Daniluk, R.H.N. Feature—by Teresa Padilla Feng Shui Living: Nature as our First Teacher Gardens bring us into contact with the cycles and irrefutable laws of nature, teaching us indelible lessons about ourselves and about the messy, difficult, and beautiful processes of living. –Cait Johnson in Earth, Water, Fire and Air

I

grew up in the splendor of the Colorado Rockies. One of the many times I realized nature as a teacher was on an all girls trip to the mountains to celebrate my 14th birthday. I remember rustling through the trees making forts, splashing through the river jumping from rock to rock, wearing remnants of gooey marshmallows all over my lips from roasting S’mores by the fire and I can never forget the smell of the crisp, earthy mountain air or the feeling that I had. I felt powerful and supported. This feeling and recognition of the awe of nature and its subtle reflection inward is what Feng Shui is all about. This awareness and guidance inward is an important step in having success with Feng Shui. Many times, clients will want me to perform a special Feng Shui cure to help improve their life. The key word is that they want “me” to perform this cure. In actuality, it is important for each person to do their own Feng Shui adjustments. One of the reasons why is that energy follows attention. When you make a conscious Intention with your Attention to do a Feng Shui adjustment, then energy will follow this and go where you direct it. It is very similar to how a boomerang works. The angle that you let go of the boomerang determines exactly how it will come back to you. This is cause and effect. Light and dark, Yin and Yang. Gregg Braden refers to this as "fractals of time." What is created is what particle physics terms The GUT or Grand Unified Theory. Which is described as such: "In the heavens there is a corresponding change amongst certain things and conditions on Earth and therefore deduced that if one deliberately changes things on Earth (or inside oneself on the mental levels) then there will be a corresponding shift without. Feng Shui is an ancient, eastern practice over thousands of years old. The meaning of the Chinese characters for Feng Shui are “Wind and Water”--

showing the close relationship of the teachings in respect to the forces of nature. Increasing your good fortune through Feng Shui is about choosing to harmonize with these forces of nature. We often forget about nature in our every day life, even though it is all around us. As we become aware of how things flow within and around then we can become aware of nature and its many influences, attributes and power. Making choices to slow down and wake up our senses and mind sense of attention to any given moment, gives us the opportunity to begin to be in alignment with the connected flow of nature. Some ways you can wake up and be connected are: 1. Literally "shake it off." Stand up and shake your whole body, like you are shaking off water. This resets you and helps attune you. 2. Take an Epsom salt bath with at least two cups of Epsom salts. This clears your energy. 3. Visualize what you want in your life and how you can harmonize with others in achieving your desire. Spend 5 minutes daily. 4. Clear clutter and chant “Om.” Chant repeatedly, but mindfully. 5. Breathe! Breath binds the soul to the body. It unifies and connects. 6. Say Feng Shui nine times with a smile. Did I get your attention here? Sounds silly, but it works. As you wake up and become aware, Nature becomes your teacher guiding you through the eight changes. The Eight Trigrams or Eight Changes are the foundation of the I Ching, the seminal text of Chinese wisdom. They represent qualities that are observable in nature and in ourselves. Each trigram notes a particular orientation in space to a particular phase or change in nature. These eight changes, when combined with yin/yang or the two main forces always present in nature, form a double trigram or what is termed a hexagram. These hexagrams form a set of 64 potential conditions in nature and in our life. The eight trigrams are: 1.

Heaven: The Creative principle — the potential for all of manifestation.

Fame Area fire/fire red, number 9 triangle shape

Earth: The Receptive principle-the potential for physical manifestation. Fire: The Clinging principle-the potential for achievement, clarity, and vitality. Lake: The Joyous principleembodies rewards, endings and transformation. Mountain: The Stillness principlethe potential for serenity and internal power. Wind: The Penetrating principlethe power to achieve without effort.

These positions formed from nature and spirit intertwining together, or yin and yang together, evolved into what is known as the Ba Gua or eight-sided map. The positions are referred to in Feng Shui as the Career Area or Water, the Knowledge Area or Mountain, the Family Area or Thunder, The Wealth Area or Wind, the Fame Area or Fire, the Marriage Area or Earth, the Creative Area or Lake and the Benefactors Area or Heaven. Feature—by Dion Koch Living an Organized Life

"

If you want to make God laugh, make a plan." I'm sitting in the Denver airport and the flight is delayed two hours because a flight attendant called in sick and we're waiting for her replacement. So I decided to finish my Evolving article. I put my USB Drive into the computer and the file had been wiped off, necessitating my starting the article all over again. Obviously, I am supposed to share a different message about living an organized life.

drama or hype. "I can't believe this flight is delayed." "I'm going to miss this business lunch." "I'm going to lose the deal." "I will never fly this airline again; I should have known better." When you are wrapped up in your "story" you look for people to be your audience, there is a lot of animation in your delivery and something, someone or some experience is always wrong. When you operate from Inner Wisdom, you simply regroup and move forward with neutrality.

It seems that lately we have been experiencing more and more unforeseen obstacles, including power outages, dropped calls and miscommunication. All of our planning is sabotaged by all that is going on around us. Sitting here in the airport, I have a gentleman who missed his business meeting; I know this because he made a loud announcement to everyone around him. Yet, he is sitting quietly with a fairly peaceful nature about him--the only thing he can do is to surrender and adapt.

A river does not flow in a straight line; there are bends, twists, dams, sand bars and blockages. The same is true for life. Our resistance is reflected back to us through the belief that our life should be a straight line. If you step back and look at the days where everything flowed, you will find that you had no resistance to what was unfolding. When the day is not flowing, and you catch yourself saying things like: "I did not get anything done," "This (computer or Internet) is running soooo slow," or "Nothing worked out today," then you are in resistance. What would be possible if you could shift your belief to the idea that, in any moment, what you experience is part of the plan for the day?

With teams that do software development there is a technique being used called "scrum." This process includes a short 10 minute meeting at the beginning of the day where everyone connects to provide a status update and the team puts together the strategy for the day. My life is starting to reflect this approach. At the beginning of the day, I connect with my Inner Wisdom for my top priorities. I focus on the high level objectives and allow the day to unfold. It is surprising how well this works. Everything that is important surfaces with ease and grace. The worst part of dealing with plans that do not work out is the mental suffering that we experience; so, it is important to have an organized mind. How do you achieve an organized mind? Make a commitment to being in the flow of life, allowing the unexpected adventures, delays and mishaps. When I use the word “allow,” I mean to have no resistance to what is. Be present, without resistance. Commit to the next action step instead of reacting to everything that is going on. How do you know that you are responding through Inner Wisdom versus reactivity? With Inner Wisdom there is no "story." There is no

When your call gets dropped, you were not supposed to talk to that person at that moment.

When you are running late, the other person was also running late or s/he needed time to prepare for your meeting.

When your computer locks up and you have to restart, it is time for you to take a mental or physical break.

When someone cancels, you have freed up time to take care of other things.

When your flight is delayed two hours, you now have time to write an article from scratch.

The unforeseen obstacles become a natural part of your life. The key to organizing your life is no resistance. My desk was totally overloaded with mail, receipts, books, etc. I noticed that I was resisting it with my judgmental chatter: EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

"That looks like a mess." "I need to make time to clean it up." "I can't find anything." In that moment, I received insight to STOP the struggle. I was guided to make one big pile, pull out the top priorities and dump the rest in a drawer. In that moment, my desk transformed from chaos to organized. It is that simple! Living a life of organization emanates from a peaceful state of mind. The fastest way to restore a peaceful state is to place your right hand, then your left hand, on your heart. Take three slow, deep breaths, bringing your awareness to the breath moving through your body. As you relax, you become present to the "now” moment-letting go of fear and opening to your Inner Wisdom. My plane has landed and I am getting ready to depart. I have a $50 voucher for the two-hour delay, a completed article and an expanded awareness of being in the flow. I acknowledge myself for going with the flow and making the very best of a situation that could have caused me a lot of anxiety. First step, hold a high level vision for your experience. Second, allow your experience to unfold without resistance. Third, tune into your Inner Wisdom. Finally, if you need some extra help getting your mind organized, put your hands on your heart and take three slow, deep breaths. Allow yourself to live a Life of Organization by allowing it to unfold with Ease and Grace.

Feature—by Liz Brown The Feng Shui of Organization 7 STEPS TO FENG SHUI ORGANIZING

The patterns you create inside do indeed repeat outside. So ask yourself if you’re making life harder for yourself than it has to be. Is it time for a change? •

D

oes Feng Shui preach organization? Certainly it’s one aspect; however, does all organization equal good Feng Shui? Surprisingly not. One organizational strategy might put everything in its place, but then how does the new space FEEL? How has the energy, the chi of that area changed? Perhaps you have good organization, but bad Feng Shui. Consider: Are the storage boxes piled too high, making you feel as if the tower will crumble at any moment? Do you feel just a little more short of breath at night, when flat storage boxes totally fill the space under -bed? Are all your boxes properly labeled, yet you continually get frustrated when you can’t see in? It’s all about the FLOW. Feng Shui principles work to allow you freedom of movement throughout your environment, along with the ability to effortlessly and efficiently place your hand on exactly what you need when you need it. Sounds like nirvana, doesn’t it? Heaven on earth. Because in this environment, YOU rule! You’re not a slave to your belongings. As a slave, your possessions are overabundant and/ or disorganized, spilling out from closets and drawers, cluttering the way. Time after time, you’re faced with one obstacle after another, day by day. Bad Feng Shui. Ensuring that “everything is in its place, with a place for everything” allows you to move smoothly, easily, effortlessly. There is flow to your every step. Life gets a little easier. Any hesitation to your path brings diminished results. Homes with blocked chi render many unfavorable outcomes for occupants. This equation is preached not only by Feng Shui consultants, but by none other than Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environment Structure. In their landmark book, A Pattern Language —second in a series of three texts laying out a new language for building and design— 253 patterns are detailed, with A Flow Through Rooms being one. Therein, Alexander warns of troubling consequences for the inhabitant, due to blocked or chopped flow: “If the physical environment inhibits him and re-

duces his freedom of action, it will prevent him from doing the best he can to keep healing and improving the social situations he is in as he sees fit. The building with generous circulation allows each person’s instincts and intuitions full play. The building with ungenerous circulation inhibits them.” To assure this "generous circulation," make smooth your path. Your first step? Clear the clutter! According to Karen Kingston, internationallyrenowned space clearing expert and author of million plus seller, Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui: “… clutter clearing is one of the most powerful, transformative aspects of Feng Shui, and in most cases, Feng Shui cures and enhancements are at best only minimally effective until this has been done.” Strong words, but an absolutely essential step if you truly want life to change. You can’t let your possessions get in your way. If you’re literally forced to walk around items in your home, we anticipate obstacles to likewise appear outside the home, perhaps in your social or business life. The patterns you create inside do indeed repeat outside. So ask yourself if you’re making life harder for yourself than it has to be. Is it time for a change? Peter Walsh, organization expert and author of several best-sellers, including Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat? warns about possessions turning against you: “Rather than bringing you happiness, or peace, or calm, or focus, if the stuff you own is causing you stress, or paralysis, or arguments with your partner, or financial ruin, then you need to do something about it.” Start today to get your life flowing! Corral all your belongings, keep only what works for you, organize well, and determine optimum placement, keeping Feng Shui principles at the fore.

Be rigorous as you PURGE that which no longer serves you, prior to organizing. Analyze every item in each area. You should be able to answer yes to the following two questions before allowing a piece to stay: Do I love it? Is it useful to me right now (not some day)? Surround yourself with only positive chi. Assess the LOCATION of storage containers. Even though it’s all organized and ordered, it’s a fair amount of stagnant energy being instilled in one confined space. So be mindful where you’re placing this block. In particular, refrain from under-bed storage. Ensure good LIGHTING, so that you see all containers clearly and read all labels easily. Light enlivens your space. Assess the EXPANSE of storage containers. Best to not create a block where critical flow is needed. If possible, spread out your storage to moderate the harmful effects of inert space. Assess the INDIVIDUAL storage containers. Will labels securely adhere? Do they need to be clear, to cut down on your frustration? Be sure to rigorously purge first, to determine how much storage you really need. Can you REPURPOSE any objects currently in the home and use them to order your clutter? Every item in your home is loved, it’s sacred, and it deserves to be used to its full potential. So be creative in getting the most out of what you already own. (The small Waterford vase might make an excellent penholder. The extra laundry basket could keep everything under the bathroom sink organized.) Determine the organizational PROCESS that works for you: Alpha? Numeric? By category? By season? By color? It all depends on how YOUR mind works. Each group of belongings is different, as is each individual and the way they think. You deserve to customize it all. As in all things Feng Shui, my mantra continues to be — the more personal, the more powerful!

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels July 2012 Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Happy birthday Cancer! Free yourself from childhood issues that limit your success at work. You’re so sensitive, and are quite susceptible to subconscious memories. Meditate often and allow weird feelings to flood into your mind. Write about past experiences and how they seem connected to blocks you have with authority figures today. By bringing things to light, you’ll build confidence, and pave the way for big changes over the next six months! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Mercury is retrograde in your sign, and could make you feel quite snappy and defensive. Try to observe your emotions. When you have a sudden internal shift, take alone time as soon as you can. Write about your feelings. Meditate. Please don’t act on your anger! You could be re-living a past life scenario. Stay quiet until you receive clear, stable guidance from your center. Asking for answers in dreams could reveal more of the story and relieve your irksomeness!

Let yourself go out of your comfort zone, Libra! If single, approach dating with a new attitude. Be open to various people you would have overlooked or who aren’t “your type”. Because warrior Mars is in your sign, beware of being irritable and starting a fight in order to feel stimulated. Work out, have fun, take risks – positive ways to express Mars!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Meditation and quiet time will give you inventive ideas about finances! Read books on spiritual prosperity for added inspiration. You might also talk with a trusted friend for advice on budgeting. If partnered, find ways to be “on the same page” where money is concerned. Approach him/her in a gentle, non-critical way. Opening to each other in this way will increase your intimacy and strengthen your bond.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Clear your subconscious mind of resentments. Meditate and think back over the past two years. Forgive and release disappointments and old anger that have become lodged in your mind. Make sure you especially focus on forgiving yourself! You’ll have more energy, better health, and feel like a weight has been lifted from your soul. (And it has because forgiving is the way to erase karma!) Since Mercury is retrograde, please try not to over-react, worry or jump to conclusions, especially when at work. Stay centered and most things will work out without difficulty.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) You’ll have a renaissance in your relationship! Re-invigorate your connection by doing new activities together.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) You could be starting a relationship with someone you’ve known for awhile who has just been a friend – or

someone you were involved with in the past. If already partnered, you’ll see your mate with new eyes and fall in love again. Make sure you have some sort of spiritual bond with whoever you’re with. This makes relationships deeper so you won’t get bored! Your meditation life has lots of “goodies” in store, so make time for your soul. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) If you’re having a financial issue, meditate on how your family of origin history could be at the root. You’ll be able to heal old patterns that cause money fears, debt trouble, or even emotional intimacy difficulties. Your work life is likely going great, so most of your fears are the “what if” types that you concoct so well! Please trust in the abundance of the Universe -and that you deserve financial and emotional comfort! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Beware of getting into old patterns in your relationship. With Mercury retrograde, you could have needless misunderstandings, and suffer from silly worries. Meditate to release heartbreaks from long ago, so you can soak in the present. If you feel emotionally off-center, make sure you’re taking spiritual actions. Are you actually mediating, or just thinking you’ll get around to it? Have you been skipping yoga classes because you’re busy with “other stuff”? Actions will create new thoughts! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) The Universe is pushing you into deeper levels of intimacy. It’s time to let go of fears! You’ll be amazed at how freeing it feels to trust your spouse/partner in a more intense way than ever before. You could have opportunities to join financial forces with someone, which could also bring “stuff” to the surface. You have such lovely energy to share, so please relax and let yourself blend and connect. Aries (March 21 – April 19) If you’re starting a new relationship, and something seems to have shifted, don’t give up yet! As an Aries, you’re ready to bolt when you have a challenge that looks like a dead end. Be patient through August, and the energy should open up again. Be consistent with your meditation! So much intuition is available if you’d put in

the time — and tolerate the boredom you feel when “nothing happens”. View the lulls as the calm before the breakthrough! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) If you’re having any health or anxiety issues, meditate and see if you’re holding in anger or suppressing fear. Write in your journal about your feelings. Let everything out. There could be emotional leftovers from childhood, or current situations. Don’t censor yourself as you write. You could feel better right away. But if you need to confront anyone, you’ll have the courage, poise and perfect words to be able to correct any circumstance. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You could be starting a new relationship. Be sure you’re choosing with your current goals and ethics. Don’t stay in the safety zone of “your type” if that type never worked before! People in your outer world need to match your inner state of mind. Don’t be afraid to let your relationships evolve as you grow! If s/he meets your improved standards, watch out for picking on flaws of either yourself or him/ her. Criticism is your form of protection – and causes you to seem cold. Let your heart shine without and impediments!
