Dear Friend, Fear and Faith: two words so completely different, yet invariably connected. For me the distinction between faith and fear lies in the feelings associated with each. When filled with fear I experience a hardening of the senses, soul and reality: my shoulders tighten, I fight against my circumstance, teeth clenched. When living with faith I feel release, an acceptance of life and its outcomes. While in a fear-based reality, I dread losing control; faith allows a complete loss of control. When I am in the flow, I take my faith for granted. Life, love and my purpose are perfectly intertwined; my faith is a constant silent partner. I practice my faith through knowingness. I live with the knowledge that everything in my life was, is, and always will be as it should. In a fear-based reality, one fear emerges and more rise to fill the void. The tension builds and my worries compound to meet the demands. The more I succumb to the fear (lack of faith), the more turmoil I experience. It seems to build to an inescapable climax… and then I remember. I remember that no matter how life appears, All Is Well — then I relax. And a miracle happens. A small one, but it’s noticeable. Then another miracle occurs, and another. Even more quickly than the fears mounted, the miracles compound and I know I am cared for. Why must I experience these dramas? I’ve learned that this pattern repeats itself. Hopefully, next time a small fear emerges I will fall into my knowingness before seeking out huge calamities to remind me of my faith. I hope this issue on faith will bring you joy, inspiration and hope. Inserted inside is a special Summer/Fall Events Guide for you to pull out and reference through October. Enjoy!

In June, the American Medical Association (AMA) adopted a new policy that declares obesity a disease. The group says that now obesity is a disease it will require a range of medical interventions to advance treatment and prevention. Over 35 percent of U.S. adults and 17 percent of children and teens are now categorized as having the “disease” of obesity. A new documentary film and book, Hungry for Change reveals that obesity is curable and preventable without medical intervention and enlists the world’s leading nutritional experts and physicians to support this claim. "The AMA's move to label obesity a disease is a step forward in awareness but we're still way off the mark when it comes to treatment,” Hungry for Change filmmaker and co-author James Colquhoun states. “This new AMA policy could lead people to seek traditional means of addressing the symptoms of obesity via lap band surgery, prescription medications and radical fad diets. However, we need to address all the underlying causes of

obesity including nutritional deficiencies, toxicity, stress and emotional trauma; education not medication is critical in providing a lasting solution,” Colquhoun added. Andrew Pollack of The New York Times reported that “medicalizing” obesity would define one-third of Americans as being ill and could lead to more reliance on costly drugs and surgery rather than lifestyle changes. According to research in Hungry For Change, obesity can be treated easily but the shocking truth remains that current mainstream approaches are proving inefficient. In the US, $60 billion dollars is spent annually on diet and weight loss related products yet UCLA research shows that up to two-thirds of people who go on a diet fail and regain more weight then when they started. Leading expert contributors in the film including Dr. Christiane Northurp MD, Dr. Alejandro Junger MD, Dr. Joseph Mercola and others postulate that the answer is simpler than we think. These experts reveal practical solutions with proven results including: stress reduction techniques, adding in whole foods, moving our bodies daily and green vegetable juices to detoxify the body.

Maya’s Oasis Takes Belly Dance To Global Market With New Online Courses Maya Zahira’s passion for belly dance is growing exponentially, as she is tapping into the global market with her new downloadable online belly dance courses slated for release this month. She offers an extensive schedule of bellydance classes throughout the Kansas City area, but wanted to share her expertise to those who aren’t able to make it to a class. Maya fell in love with belly dance in the late 90’s and began The Maya Zahira School of Belly Dance in 2003. (She is also a certified Usui Reiki Master, and a professional member of the International Center for Reiki Training.) Healing is her focus, and belly dance offers a way for women to get physically in shape, boost their self-esteem, heal through the emotional and spiritual aspects of the dance, and have fun too. “I know there are many women who would really love belly dance, but might be in an area where it’s not offered, or

are in a rural area where it’s too far to drive to a class. For some, their busy schedule doesn’t allow for time to attend classes, so this course gives them a way to learn at home. Books THE HONEYMOON EFFECT The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth By Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. © 2013 It is beyond our imagination to conceive of a single form of life that exists alone and independent, unattached to other forms. —LEWIS THOMAS

I

f you’re a survivor of multiple failed relationships, you may wonder why you keep trying. I can assure you that you don’t persist just for the (sometimes shortlived) good times. And you don’t persist because of TV ads featuring loving couples on tropical islands. You persist, despite your track record and despite dismal divorce statistics, because you are designed to bond. Human beings are not meant to live alone. There is a fundamental biological imperative that propels you and every organism on this planet to be in a community, to be in relationship with other organisms. Whether you’re thinking about it consciously or not, your biology is pushing you to bond. In fact, the coming together of individuals in community (starting with two) is a principle force that drives biological evolution, a phenomenon I call spontaneous evolution, which I cover in depth in the book of the same name.1 There are, of course, additional biological imperatives designed to ensure

individual and species survival: the drive for food, for sex, for growth, for protection, and the ferocious, inexplicable drive to fight for life. We don’t know where or how the will to live is programmed into cells, but it is a fact that no organism will readily give up its life. Try to kill the most primitive of organisms and that bacterium doesn’t say, “Okay, I’ll wait until you kill me.” Instead, it will make every evasive maneuver in its power to sustain its survival. When our biological drives are not being fulfilled, when our survival is threatened, we get a feeling in the pit of our stomach that something is wrong even before our conscious minds comprehend the danger. That gut feeling is being felt globally right now—many of us are feeling that pit in our stomach as we ponder the survivability of our environmentally damaged planet and of the human beings who have damaged it. Most of this book focuses on how individuals can create or rekindle wonderful relationships, but in the last chapter I’ll explain how the energy created by “Heaven on Earth” relationships can heal the planet and save our species. … The social nature of harmonious animal societies can provide fundamental insights directly applicable to human civilization. One great example is an ant, which, like a human being, is a multicellular social organism; when you take an ant out of its

community it will die. In fact, an individual ant is really a suborganism; the true organism is actually represented by the ant colony. Lewis Thomas described ants this way: “Ants are so much like human beings as to be an embarrassment. They farm fungi, raise aphids as livestock, launch armies into war, use chemical sprays to alarm and confuse enemies, capture slaves, engage in child labor, exchange information ceaselessly. They do everything but watch television.”2 … As for human communities, we can fend for ourselves as individuals longer than a single ant can, but we’re likely to go crazy in the process. I’m reminded of the movie Cast Away in which Tom Hanks plays a man who is marooned on an island in the South Pacific. He uses his own bloody hand to imprint a face on a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball he calls “Wilson” so he can have someone to talk to. Finally, after four years, he takes the risky step of venturing off the island in a makeshift raft because he’d rather die trying to find someone to communicate with than stay by himself on the island, even though he has figured out how to secure food and drink—that is, how to survive. Most people think that the drive to propagate is the most fundamental biological imperative for humans, and there’s no doubt that reproduction of the individual is

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

6

July 2013

fundamental to species survival. That’s why for most of us sex is so pleasurable— Nature wanted to ensure that humans have the desire to procreate and sustain the species. But Hanks doesn’t venture off the island to propagate; he ventures off the island to communicate with someone other than a volleyball. For humans, coming together in pairs (biologists call it “pair coupling”) is about more than sex for propagation. … Instead of cursing our bad luck in relationships, we need to recognize that our efforts at bonding are a fundamental drive of Nature and that these bonds can be cooperative and harmonious. We need to heed Rumi’s sage advice: “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” When we start living in harmony with Nature (and with ourselves), we can move on to creating The Honeymoon Effect in our lives, where relationships are based on love, cooperation, and communication. In the next chapter, we’ll explore the most fundamental form of communication among organisms: energy vibrations. Excerpted with permission. he day my faith became invincible Mother insisted a group of us high schoolers stop at church to receive Holy Communion at 6:30 am prior to taking our SAT college exams. My 17-year-old hands were sweaty and my stomach queasy with nerves. When the priest laid the host on my tongue, my whole body and spirit filled with calm. I remained calm. I knew I would score high on the exams. And I did. Psychologists may dub this “power of suggestion” but for me it was more than that. My faith in the great mystery of divine love lifted. I felt the joy and enthusiasm of feeling connected to something larger than myself. My favorite course work at college was the religious studies presented by a Jesuit priest. He explained the mystery of love at all levels. We studied Erich Fromm, The Art of Love. He encouraged us to think, to feel, to explore, to challenge. Marriage and boys were the last thing on my mind as I was so thrilled about my future and where it might take me. At age 22, the nuns invited me to join the college upon graduation. A nun?!!**!? I packed my bags and drove quickly back to KC. Faith does not always involve an institution. Our

Faith does not always involve an institution. Our Faith helps us achieve rich, productive lives by exploring our hidden capacities to love without condition. Faith helps us achieve rich, productive lives by exploring our hidden capacities to love without condition. Mature love — and you know if you possess it — resonates self-knowledge, esteem and courage. As with every art, it demands practice, concentration, as well as genuine insight and understanding. Yes, it may involve romantic love but also brotherly and sisterly love (community), self-love, the love of God, and the love of children, the love of the Earth, her rivers and seas, trees and land, resources and all creatures. A yoga philosophy called a sutra (thread) reads “abiding in ease is yoga.” If a stress thought flashes in my mind I say this mantra “stay easy.” This is faith. r. Andrew Newberg, neuroscientist and author of Why We Believe What We Believe, is working on ways to track how the human brain processes spirituality and faith. It is part of a new field called neurotheology. He discovered that the brains of people of different spiritual traditions behaved similarly when in prayer or meditation. Dr. John Dominic Crossan, an author and professor emeritus of De Paul University, describes how we manifest this hard-wiring • To search for meaning; ultimate or transcendent meaning. • To name the transcendental meaning by which we commit ourselves to live human lives in the certainty of human death. • We express those names for transcendent meaning by metaphor and mega-metaphor. • Across time and space, different spiritual paths, the great grounding metaphors for transcendent meaning are to imagine and experience as Power, Order, State or Person.

In the famous letters between Bill W., co-founder of the Alcoholics Anonymous group and Carl Jung, the idea of Power is explored. Bill W. writes to Jung to thank him for his contribution to his ideas in forming the 12-step program. The second step is to acknowledge that a Power greater than oneself could restore a person to sanity. Jung writes to Bill W. that he equates a person’s craving for alcohol as “the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness, expressed in our medieval language: the Union with God. How could one formulate such an insight in a language that is not misunderstood in our days? Bill W. and Carl Jung, along with many recovering alcoholics had experienced a spiritual awakening. This lifechanging wakening can be as subtle as a change of attitude over time. They both agreed that this Power was one’s personal perception and could be God, the Buddha nature, a desire to do good, the world of nature. Dr. Eben Alexander, author of Proof of

Heaven, tells his life story in the context of his near death experience while in a coma for seven days. His experience a Power within and around him that awakened him to the deeper meaning of life and an angelic woman who told him, “You are loved and cherished, dearly forever.” Later, he discovered when seeing her photo for the first time, that it was his deceased half-sister whom he had never met. He says, “The unconditional love and acceptance that I experienced on my journey is the single most important discovery I have ever made, or will ever make…” Viktor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning relates a similar experience in the horror of the German concentration camp, “ For the first time in my life I saw the truth…that love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire… the salvation of man is through love and in love.” He went on to inspire others to find meaning and purpose`. This spiritual awakening is highly unique and personal. It sometimes happens slowly over time or in bursts. It seems to repeat in deeper levels as we mature. It can manifest as a belief in God, the world of nature, the Buddha within or a desire to help humanity. Unconditional love for others and oneself is the heart of the awakening. It takes courage and persistence to begin and continue this journey, but to do so is to have a life that is rich and meaningful.

Holistic Health—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Never Ending PMS or Menopause

W

hen my mother we n t thr o u gh menopause in the late 70’s, she tells me, “I had one hot flash, never took hormones, and it was no big deal.” So when I went through menopause about 6 years ago, I was doing really well with natural treatments, progesterone cream and black cohosh for several months. Then all of a sudden I was up most of the night with hot flashes and anxious moments and said, “This is enough!!” I started on Bio-identical compounded natural hormone replacement therapy and was better in a matter of a few weeks. Yet after a few months, I was not really myself; I had problems with word recall, headaches and mood shifts. And, energy was not optimal. More issues, other than female hormones exist, when usual treatment for PMS and menopause do not control the symptoms. After 30 years in Internal Medicine practice and nearly 20 years of studying and researching holistic and natural treatments, several other areas of possibility may need to be addressed. These areas include: nutrition and food sensitivities, adrenal hormone imbalance and brain chemistry — neurotransmitters. When hormonal therapy is not optimal and fatigue occurs after eating or is associated with sneezing, cough, headache or gut symptoms, food sensitivities can be the culprit. The methods to evaluate these sensitivities can include a food elimination diet with observation of how symptoms relate to foods. The most common food sensitivities are dairy, gluten, soy and corn. Reactions to food may take a few minutes or up to 28 hours, so it may be difficult to determine, yet with trial and error, you can achieve better health. Generally, foods can be re-introduced (over time) utilizing digestive enzymes, probiotics and possibly glutamine. Blood tests for food sensitivities and stool testing are occasionally necessary. Dysbiosis, which is a bacterial imbalance in the gut, bacterial overgrowth or yeast overgrowth can be treated using an integrative approach to help get to the root of the food sensitivity problem. When menopause occurs, along with usual or unusual life stressors, the adrenal glands are put on alert and these glands can produce estrone, one of the woman’s estrogens, to make menopause easier. When the adrenals have been

stressed with life’s stressors and poor lifestyle choices, they may not respond appropriately. Common adrenal symptoms are fatigue, non-restful sleep, weight gain around the middle, alcohol intolerance and difficulty concentrating. The adrenals can be evaluated by lab testing using saliva to test cortisol and DHEA over the course of the day. Supportive vitamins, minerals and herbal or hormonal support may be beneficial. Other ways to support the adrenal glands are by eating healthy, avoiding sugar, getting regular sleep, exercise and stress management. When nutritional and adrenal hormone supports have not achieved optimal results, then the brain chemistry can be assessed with an alternative urine test to measure neurotransmitters. An example of these neurotransmitters tested include: serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, glutamate, histamine, epinephrine and gaba. When the levels are obtained, balance can be achieved with specific amino acid, mineral and occasionally herbal supplements. Occasionally prescription medications are prescribed. The most common symptoms of neurotransmitter imbalance are anxiety, depression, mood swings, irritability, lack of focus, concentration problems, trouble losing weight, appetite and sleep issues. If menopause or PMS symptoms are not successfully treated with usual conventional treatments or you do not want to take synthetic birth control pills or synthetic hormones, other options are available. It can seem like a big puzzle and the pieces need to be found and all put together. I am happy to support you on your journey to put the puzzle together to achieve optimal health. Books—by Eduardo Castro, M.D. Diabetes Treatment: Medicine’s Colossal Error

T

ype 2 diabetes is an epidemic. It used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes, but so many children now have this form of diabetes that it made no sense to call it an adult illness. Briefly, diabetics have high levels of glucose in their blood. Type I diabetics do not produce insulin while Type 2 diabetics’ tissues become resistant to insulin. Insulin is the hormone produced in the pancreas that allows glucose to enter the cells from the bloodstream. In Type 1 there is no insulin and in Type 2 there is plenty of insulin but it is not working well enough. Type 2 diabetics are at a considerably increased risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, blindness, kidney failure, and Alzheimer’s disease. Type 2 diabetics fill intensive care unit beds and get most of the bypass surgeries, kidney transplants, and amputations that are done each year. One would think that the medical establishment would give considerable thought to treating this major killer and mammoth drain of health care dollars. But that does not appear to be the case. Conventional medicine treats Type 2 diabetes the same way they treat Type 1: a disease of elevated glucose levels. That is only half of the picture. Indeed, elevated glucose levels must be controlled or it damages tissues and leads to death. But Type 2 diabetes is also a disease of elevated insulin levels. It is the elevated levels of insulin that cause

gree of insulin resistance, the doses are not small. The most unconscionable thing about the conventional approach to treating diabetes, however, is that Type 2 diabetes is a curable illness. The proper diet, exercise, one of the available diabetic drugs, specific nutrients, and time (it takes months to shift the vicious cycle of insulin resistance to a favorable cycle) lead to decreased insulin resistance. With persistence, the body’s sensitivity to insulin can improve to the point that not only is there no diabetes, but there is no insulin resistance. There are some who have experienced so much pancreatic damage that they can only improve their condition, not cure, but they are in the disThe Biggest and Most Costly Error in Medi- tinct minority. cine in the 21st Century As stated, conventional medicine treats Type 2 Blunder . . . or Ignoring the Obvious? There is not a physician in the trenches treating diabetes as a disease of elevated glucose levels. How are those folks treated? Increase inflammatory activity – excessive inflammation is the hallmark of coronary/ cerebrovascular/peripheral vascular artery disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, autism, autoimmune disease, severe allergies, and it promotes cancer and asthma; excessive inflammation drives the chronic and degenerative disease of our age. The above problems are then treated with antihypertensives, statin drugs, stents, coronary bypass surgery, gastric bypass surgery, antiinflammatory drugs, bronchodilators, Viagra-type drugs, kidney dialysis, immunosuppressive drugs, amputations, and, of course, antidepressants.

hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and excessive inflammation that lead to the above mentioned diseases. Insulin Resistance Insulin resistance is caused by a diet that is too high in sugars and in carbohydrates. It can occur on a continuum anywhere from mild to severe, and it is usually progressive. The reason that insulin resistance worsens over time is that one’s pancreas will keep secreting insulin if glucose levels are elevated. As will be discussed in Part II, the greater the insulin level, the more the body becomes resistant to its effects. But that means that more and more insulin must be produced to bring glucose levels down. A person is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes when the maximum amount of insulin production does not lower blood glucose sufficiently. Anyone with insulin resistance has elevated insulin levels, not just Type 2 diabetics. Prediabetics do, and even pre-prediabetics as well. Problems from Elevated Levels of Insulin In addition to sending glucose into cells for energy production, insulin also directs the body to perform several other tasks: • Make fat – especially triglycerides, but cholesterol production also increases. • Store Fat – around organs, called visceral fat (the worst fat).

Feature—by Eduardo Castro, M.D. Why Can’t You Lose Weight?

A

re you among the growing number of distressed people who do not lose weight when they diet earnestly? Or you may lose just a few pounds, nowhere near the amount you expected to lose. And easy weight gain after dieting is common, even when your diet is good. If so, you likely have Fat Loss Resistance Syndrome (FLRS). FLRS is a chronic medical condition that prevents, or minimizes, weight loss when you diet. It is the result of triggering survival mechanisms that allowed man to live through lengthy periods of searching for food, back in time when a next meal was not a certainty. These survival mechanisms can be inappropriately triggered today in our world of plenty, and the result is FLRS. It usually has three underlying factors that can be corrected: 1. Disruption of the hormones that regulate fat storage and energy utilization. 2. Excessive inflammation. 3. Unhealthy genetic expression.

Hormones We have in our genetic blueprint an exquisite ability to assess and regulate precisely how much energy we store. We do not store protein and we store enough sugar for only a burst of activity. But we adapted to store enough fat to fuel the hunt for food for weeks. As energy stores begin to deplete, it activates a cascade of hormonal changes that preserve fat by both decreasing metabolic rate and by making more fat whenever possible. Hormones can even direct the breakdown of muscle and organ tissues for energy to preserve fat stores. If this cascade of hormones, meant to save us from starvation, gets triggered when we have more than sufficient fat stores, the picture of FLRS emerges. The first step in correcting FLRS is to regain proper hormone regulation. The usual suspects are insulin, leptin, thyroid, and cortisol, and adrenalin and estrogen can also play a role. Typically, the following must be addressed to overcome FLRS. • Insulin resistance.

• •

Leptin resistance.

• •

Adrenalin resistance.

Low thyroid functioning even with normal blood testing. • Elevated cortisol levels. Excessive estrogen activity.

By the way, although the causes of FLRS can get complicated, the solutions are straightforward. Plus, the causes of FLRS are interrelated so working on one often has a favorable effect on the others.

Inflammation

Inflammation is an important part of healthy immune functioning. It is a defense against invading microoragnisms and impedes the spread of infection, cleans up cellular debris and dead cells, and promotes healing. But like a nice bonfire getting out of control, excessive inflammation damages. Excessive inflammation is not only present in FLRS, it is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, autism, arthritis, auto-immune disease, and severe allergies. It promotes asthma and cancer. Excessive inflammation results from poor diets and from toxic substances. But in this world dominated by multinational corporations whose only concern is the bottom line, clean, high quality food is expensive and difficult to find, and avoidance of toxic substances is impossible. This means if you have FLRS, you are going to have to work harder than most people to eat well and to minimize your toxic exposures. And some will need to work at detoxification as well. An additional problem with inflammation and FLRS is that there is a vicious cycle present: excess fat increases inflammation and inflammation promotes the hormone disruptions that lead to obesity. It is well worth the efforts to eating healthy and reducing toxic load to break the cycle.

Genetic Expression The notion that our genes largely determine our fate has been substantially modified. It has become clear that genes can be active or inactive and that various combinations of active and inactive genes can result in markedly different outcomes. The field of science that studies what affects gene expression is epigenetics. To our great advantage epigenetics research indicates that there are several factors within our control that significantly affect our gene expression. Since FLRS becomes established via unhealthy gene expression, take particular note of these: • Diet – eating the foods we are genetically adapted to turns on healthy gene expression. • Bowel health – microbes that inhabit our bowels influence weight, energy levels, sleep patterns, emotional regulation. • Toxic burden – avoidance and improved detoxification are key. EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

• Vitamin D level (specifically, the 25-OH Vitamin D level) – Vitamin D affects at least 20 percent of our gene expression and should be optimized to a blood level of 60-80 ng/ml. • Physical activity .

20

July 2013

Beliefs – not just being optimistic or hopeful but choosing to conduct yourself (thoughts and actions) as though your chosen belief is already in the process of becoming reality and having the feelings of profound gratitude (in the case of FLRS, the gratitude, relief, and joy you will experience when you are at a healthy body weight). So how do you overcome FLRS and become able to lose weight? • Eat healthy food, i.e., foods man is genetically adapted to, but do not restrict calories until FLRS is corrected. • Reduce your exposure to toxic substances.

• •

Enhance your detoxification processes.

Avoid foods that cause an inflammatory reaction in your gut. • Achieve optimal thyroid functioning. There are other considerations that, when addressed, help overcome FLRS: • Stress Management – particularly important since FLRS itself is highly stressful physically, emotionally, and psychologically. • Medications – avoiding those that cause weight gain. Treating FLRS allows people to overcome the array of physiological problems that prevent them from losing weight. By helping people determine what the most likely underlying problems are, they are able to focus their attention and effort on correcting the problems and then they can begin losing weight. veryone should take calcium to prevent osteoporosis, right? Well, maybe not. Scant evidence supports supplemental calcium for osteoporosis prevention and a body of evidence is growing, showing that it may cause harm. This past May another study showed that calcium supplementation was associated with nearly 50 percent higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or sudden cardiac death in the calcium supplementation group during five years of treatment. So what gives? Here’s how I explain it to patients: The notion of calcium for osteoporosis may come from how light the bones look on X-ray. This lightness is due to decreased calcium in bones. But adding back calcium does not address the root cause of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is most common in western countries that eat a lot of meat, dairy, processed food, soda pop, grains, bread, white sugar, white flour and very few vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. This creates acidity in the body that is a low pH. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. pH 1 is hydrochloric acid, a strong acid. pH 14 is very alkaline, like Drano. Our body likes to be slightly alkaline, pH 7.35 — 7.45. The western diet causes the body pH to drop below 7.35. This is like a four alarm fire to the body. It must raise the pH to its normal range for the body to work properly. The kidney and lungs are primarily responsible for this. However the western diet usually overwhelms their ability to normalize the pH. So the body resorts to taking minerals from the bones to alkalize the body. Over many years of consuming the western diet, the body depletes the minerals in the bones, leading to decreased bone density and osteoporosis. I recommend removing the most acidifying foods from the diet: soda pop, dairy, processed foods, white flour and white sugar while increasing intake of vegetables, espe21

cially dark green ones, to six fist size or fist-full per day. When this diet is combined with weight bearing exercise, adequate vitamin D3 levels and judicious bioidentical hormone replacement, all shown in studies to increase bone density, I see improvements within two years. I do not recommend supplemental calcium for treatment or prevention of osteoporosis. It will likely take a while to bust the calcium myth for good. It’s often said that it takes 30 years to translate new research into clinical practice. It would be a shame to learn that an unproven treatment for osteoporosis put so many women at risk for heart disease, when the cause of osteoporosis is the food on our plate.

I

n the early morning hours of February 7, 2001, I fell down some stairs at our home in Olathe, Kansas, breaking my neck and damaging my spinal cord. I was left quadriplegic and given about a 10% chance of ever walking again. Four months later, I was laid off from my career position with a major financial corporation; and, nine months after that my wife left and filed for divorce. But I overcame all of these adversities and climbed the highest mountain in Colorado. How was this possible? As the title of my forthcoming book states, it happened, “One Step at a Time.” Listlessly, I surveyed the dimly lit room of the ICU. In one corner a small, opaque shaft of light had managed to sneak between the closed window blinds, a tiny slice of life in an otherwise dead world. Periodically, the resigned sigh of a compressor interrupted the gloom as it pumped air into my useless cocooned legs. There was no sensation in them not was there any ability to move most of my body. Needing help like never before, I cried out loud: "God, what am I going to do to get out of this?" Instantly, a voice (in my mind) as clear and distinct as any I’d ever heard, said this: • DO WHAT'S DOABLE WHENEVER YOU CAN. • WORK ON YOUR AREAS OF STRENGTH FIRST. • DON’T GIVE UP (Believe). The words became my mantra and roadmap to recovery. I had them placed on the wall of my room and referred to them often in the coming months. A week later, the first day of therapy in the Rehabilitation Institute ended in utter failure. I couldn’t even sit up, for Pete’s sake! After a blasé dinner it eventually became time to go to sleep. “Leave the window shades open,” I asked the nurse, “I don‘t want to lose my only connection to the natural world.” But sleep was impossible. Hours passed as I gazed out at the stars in the night sky. Eventually, dawn arrived and the sky began to change from black to grey to rose-colored hues as morning approached. Finally, the sun peeked above the horizon and the sky turned slate green. Within a few minutes, it turned a cold pale blue that deepened as the morning sun rose higher in the eastern sky. After a while, tiny white clouds formed here and there; and, in the far distance, tiny specks— birds, swam on an ocean current of blue. As I gazed through sleep-deprived eyes, suddenly the sky and everything else in the world took on the glow of a miracle. Within seconds, things I had scarcely noticed before the injury became more exquisite than words could express. Even the threads in my sheets glowed with divinity. The reflection of

the sun on the sand in the bricks outside my window became the eye of God looking into mine. I also began to “see” inside others…how lonely or afraid we all are and how much we need one another. We’re all connected and the smallest acts of kindness may affect others in ways we may never know. Overwhelmed, I gave thanks for the many things I still had. I’m convinced that at the exact moment when I turned away from fear and opened my heart to love, my healing began. In the following months I listened to motivational tapes and read stories of remarkable recoveries made by people with a fatal prognosis. I asked myself, What is the key to miracles? And, what did Jesus really mean when he said:

People who have achieved remarkable recoveries have employed many techniques. One day, prior to meditating, I asked God: There are so many ideas. Which one works best? The response: “The one that work best for you.” After endless hours of meditation, visualization and hard work some therapists began calling me “24/7.” ------------------------------------------------------On the morning of August 7, 2003, thirty months to the day of my injury, after seven hours of climbing I turned a corner in the trail for what seemed the millionth time expecting to see yet another rise. But instead the terrain leveled off to a flat surface strewn with boulders. Majestic peaks from distant mountain ranges were everywhere--all below me. The trail I’d just come up wound down the side of the mountain, becoming an ever tinier ribbon until finally merging with a Lilliputian, forest-covered valley far below. Slowly it dawned on me: This is it, the summit of Mt. Elbert. A few minutes later my sons, Sean and Ryan, joined me. We’d done it. We had touched the sky! On the way home, nodding half-asleep in the back of the car, certain Truths came to me: It’s the journey that’s important in life not the goal. The true purpose of life is inner peace, which can be realized any time or anywhere. Love is the most important--without it, we’re nothing. Back in Olathe, I wrote a letter to my neurosurgeon, several doctors and therapists thanking them for the excellent care they’d given me during my darkest hours of need. I concluded the letter by reminding them: Never use the word “can’t” with your

patients. No one knows the levels of faith, belief or determination that are inside a person. Through them, all things are possible

Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes in me the works I do shall he do also, and greater than these shall he do, because I go to the Father. (John 14:12) I learned that by “going to the Father,” Jesus was referring to the divinity that is within each and every one of us and through this divinity all things are possible. I also learned that all miraculous healings seemed to have three things in common: Intention. Praying as though it is already done. Taking action to make it come to pass.

here comes a moment in the midst of a spiritual journey when something simply shifts. In that instant, there is the stunning realization that all the books, all the workshops, all the mind-stretching spiritual understandings you’ve gathered up in your travels like a wildflower bouquet, can take you just so far and no further. You totally “get it”— theoretically. Now, all that remains is the experience itself—the indescribable touch of the Divinity within—the breathtaking embrace that catapults you from the mental realm of believing to the heartspace of knowing. This is the turning point in your sacred journey when you realize it’s time to jump in with both feet. In your heart of hearts, you know you’re ready to actually make that inner journey you’ve been trying to wrap your mind around all these years—and have the experience for which there are no words. This is the crossroads where you recognize that the breathtaking transformation you’ve been yearning for could be within reach — if only there were time to devote to it. This is the moment when life’s priorities are reexamined. This is the inner push that nudges you to take a long, honest, life-changing look at where your spiritual practice really places on the endless list of activities and obligations that vie for your attention. This is the moment of self-scrutiny where you come to terms with what’s important to you — because halfway doesn’t work! Your connection with your own sacred Self is “a relationship”—

and when you’re in a relationship you arrange your life so that you’re able to devote time to it. In the new book, A Journey to Oneness, the Divine Source I’ve come to know as “Oneness” gives us some powerful clues to help us make the most of that precious time and deepen our sacred relationship with the Divinity within us. Here are some excerpts: 'Oneness' speaks about prayer and devotion. “Creating a holy space that is bathed in your own heart’s prayers will help to establish a foundation upon which you can continue to build. There is no ultimate formula for the meditation of your heart. It speaks its truth. And the authenticity and clarity with which you present yourself at the altar of your own Divine Presence serves to determine the level at which the whisperings of your heart may be heard and embraced by your own sacred Essence. You are not offering prayers to forces that are alien to you. You are inviting the sacred within you to resonate to your highest vision of yourself in a given moment. Your objective is not to seek that connectedness as one would seek union with something “other than” one’s own self. Your objective is to Become That which you Are and to initiate a celebration of that attainment in Oneness. Your time of prayer and devotion is that of celebration. It is not a time to present your perceived shortcomings upon the altar of your fears. In the moment of your invocation, Be the One who has risen from the cloud of the illusion and experiences the sweetness and clarity of Divine Union. Be willing

to be that vulnerable. Surrender all of it to the higher vision within you that yearns to break free of the limitations you clutch like a security blanket.” 'Oneness' speaks about the power of vulnerability and surrender. “The key to your freedom from the constraints of your incarnate history is your willingness to place the fullness of all that you know yourself to be upon the altar of surrender, and to relinquish any need to direct or to mastermind the result. Become the clay with which you were created, in purity and in innocence, and allow the hand of Creation to mold your Dream anew. This is not a work for your linear mind to undertake, to grapple with, to understand, and to hone. This is a work from which you yearn to break free. You surely can continue to be the masterwork of your intellect and your limited understandings of the manipulation of the building blocks of physical reality, if you so choose. Yet the opportunity is at hand to walk away from that conditioning and to open to a higher possibility. This level of surrender is one that must be done blindly, in loving trust of Self to lead the way.” Sourcing the Self during expressions of devotion and becoming the offering on the altar of the heart “You have come here to this moment, to this precipice of possibility, in order to experience and to know your Self. The recipe for your own personal transcendence is written within the inner sanctums of your heart. Source the sweetness within your own being and

offer it. That offering becomes the Divine gift with which you nourish your emerging awareness into clarity. The offering recognizes itself, stripped naked of all the mindchatter and chaos of its sojourn into humanness. It knows itself to Be pure Awareness, Present for a stroll in the flower garden of this physical world. It is Present to drink deeply of the nectar, to breathe fully of the fragrance within, and to become the physical blossoming whose Presence might be recognized and experienced by others. You Are that flower, here upon the altar of your heart. The offering of Life Itself to Life Itself.” Author of the spiritual classic, Oneness, and the newly released sequel, A Jour-

ney to Oneness, Rasha has worked as Divine Messenger for over 25 years. In 1998, she began a profound dialogue with the universal Presence, “Oneness”—the Divinity we all share and many refer to as “God.” Word for word, she transcribed the principles that give us a new level of understanding of the mystery we call “life”. An incurable world traveler, Rasha lives at the foot of the mystical mountain, Arunachala, in South India. For more info, visit: www.onenesswebsite.com

T

he ability to have faith in this ever -changing world is an important quality to possess. The ability to believe without logical proof or material evidence can carry us through the dark times when we cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. Like many other people, I find my faith can waiver at times. I discovered it is because the mind and ego want proof. The conscious mind is narrow, limited and one-dimensional. So, how can we convince our conscious minds to have faith? The mind is like a computer, and will believe what we tell it. Therefore, we can feed our mind what we want it to believe. The ego wants you to follow the crowd and hide your uniqueness and greatness. When 98 percent of the people say the world is flat, the tendency of the mind is to agree. The way to rectify this is to surround yourself with progressive thinkers that have expansive thoughts you would like to emulate. Another reason people lose faith is due to the time factor. When something doesn’t happen within a certain time frame, we may lose faith. Metaphysical teachings tell us if we visualize something, it will manifest. However, there is a time factor involved that we need to include in our visualization process. Many times we are not prepared to receive our desires, and need some preparation time. For example, many of us imagine finding our perfect mate and getting married after we graduate high school or college. However, most of us are not ready for that kind of commitment in our early twenties. Have faith that your desires will manifest when the time is right. Another reason we lose faith is because we lack understanding of why something is occurring. When bad things happen, we easily get discouraged, unaware that there is a higher meaning for the event. The planet Pluto helps us transform and change for our highest good. In the process, something tragic often happens, or we often lose something to which we have become attached. If Pluto feels this attachment is stifling our growth, whether it be a person, place or thing, it may take it away from us. This loss or bad event often causes us to lose faith in the goodness of the world. Although Pluto may be seen as a cruel, ruthless influence in our life, it only wants to help us along our path of growth and evolution. Rather than lose faith, dialogue with Pluto about the events in your life. Honesty is required for us to look at our attachments and release them. Pluto often clears the way for something better to come into our lives. If you lose your job, perhaps there is a better one

just around the corner. Now let us explore ways to cultivate faith in our lives. Faith requires believing. You can move from believing to knowing through practicing spiritual principals in your life. Faith is also built on trust. And, trust is built through experience and study. One way to develop faith is to study the Universal Laws and Truths — then put them into practice in your life. The Law of Abundance teaches that as you give, so you shall receive. Tithing is one practice that helps you put the Law of Abundance into action. Money either circulates or stagnates. To keep the money circulating in your life, you can tithe 10 percent of your income to the person, place or thing that spiritually feeds you. As you do, the law states you will receive back ten times the amount you gave. In the beginning it requires much faith to tithe your hard earned money. However, once you begin tithing, you will see the beauty of this law working as more financial abundance flows into your life. Soon you will move from believing in the Law of Abundance to knowing it works! The Law of Attraction also requires faith. When we desire something that is out of our reach financially, we must have faith in this law that states we will draw to ourselves that which we focus on. Before you manifest your first desire, you spend time visualizing based on faith. After you receive your first desire, you become convinced of the power of the Law of Attraction. The planet Neptune can also help us develop faith. This planet calls us to look beyond the physical and have faith in a higher power. We can heed the calling of Neptune and respond to it by examining the placement of Neptune on our astrology charts. The zodiac sign it rules, as well as the astrological house it resides in, will better help us to harness the Neptunian energy. The zodiac sign it rules, Pisces, can also be an example of faith. People with the Sun in Pisces have an easy time havEVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

ing faith. You can surround yourself with Pisceans, as well as understand the Piscean influence on your own astrology chart. The planet Jupiter also infuses us with a natural optimism and faith in the universe. If you find yourself losing faith, you can also look to the zodiac sign ruled by Jupiter, which is Sagittarius. People with the Sun in Sagittarius can teach us the true meaning of faith. They possess a deep connection with their intuition, and do not need proof to believe in something. The next time you find your faith wavering, look to the powerful spiritual Laws of the Universe and put them into practice in your life. Soon you will become a believer in the goodness of the Universe. Consult an astrology book, or read a Holy work to increase your faith. Spend time with a Piscean or a Sagittarian, who can teach you powerful lessons in faith. I like to view life as a "Teacher of Faith". I challenge you to use every experience in your life as an opportunity to develop faith.

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels July 2013 Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Happy birthday Cancer! Jupiter — the planet of abundance, joy and good karma – is in your sign for a year! This starts a new 12-year cycle of positive changes in selfesteem and relationships. You can re-invent yourself, so be courageous to throw out everything old and junky – be they old clothes, negative people, or poisonous thought patterns! Make your mantra, “I deserve to be fulfilled and unconditionally happy!” Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) I know it doesn’t sound exciting or glamorous, but forgiving unhappy events over the past two years will be transformative. (They represent a microcosm of karma for your soul issue for this lifetime!) Meditating moves out negative family patterns that are so subtle and constant they feel like a permanent part of you – but they are not you! Putting aside your attachment to anger or depression from old events helps you see the long-term pattern so you can be completely free! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Enlist spiritually-minded friends to help you stay positive and forward thinking. Tell them not to let you dwell in the past or on “what ifs”. Meditate and journal about any memories of people betraying your trust in emotional, sexual or financial relationships. Be willing to release these experiences and the subsequent limiting belief systems you created. You’ll be open to draw better karma with positive people as you stay optimistic too! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Wow! Any clogs you’ve had in finances or career finally flow freely! You’ll also have breakthroughs in body image and self-worth issues. But now watch for your Libran tendency to stir up drama or worry when things are good. You might pick on your relationship to obsessively create improvement. Sure, you and your partner have ways you can both grow, but watch for ex-

treme feelings and actions that cause more harm than healing! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Saturn is moving direct in your sign, helping you resolve issues of selfworth, trust in relationships, and a sense of connection to the Universe. Renew your commitment to meditation so you can “lock in” this new consciousness of abundance, optimism and bonding. You might even join a group that is very dedicated to their spiritual disciplines. Also renew your commitment to eating well and practicing stress reduction. Keeping your body healthy and “clean” keeps your mind and heart open! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Relationships are a spiritual training ground for all areas of your life. Practice being patient with your partner – allowing intimacy to unfold – facing dark parts of yourself with acceptance and a willingness to heal rather than running away. All these skills play out in the arena of human connection, but they also reflect your level of soul growth. When bored or impatient, your greatest spiritual victories will come if you stand firm and stay present for the lessons. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) You might be starting a new relationship with someone truly awesome, inspiring and devoted – just like you! Jupiter is beginning a fresh 12 year cycle of happiness in your emotional life. So even a current bond will get better! You’ll also find

a renewed connection with old friends, and maybe even a past hobby, that lift your spirits and help you feel a sense of connection and purpose. Enjoy everything to the fullest! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You’ll have career breakthroughs. People have been noticing and increasingly respecting you. Even if you’ve been doubtful about your success, accolades and recognition are on the way! Spiritually, you’ll have breakthroughs with your chattering mind that drives you crazy! You’ll be able to connect with your intellect when you need it, and also be able to quiet it to hear the “still small voice” of intuition. Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) It’s a great time for relationships! You could start a great new connection, or have huge improvements in your current partnership. Things will just be easy, fun and fulfilling! Spiritually, you’ll also have breakthroughs that help you feel connected and give you a sense of direction and inspiration. Make financial improvements by revising your budget and spending habits to be stressfree in that area too! Aries (March 21 – April 19) You can have incredible healing about family issues or long-term problems. You’ll have insights about new ways to approach problems and the energy to take those steps. In some cases things could just miraculously lift. (A result of reaping good karma for your meditations over

many years!) You’ll feel more centered and better able to trust others. Third dimensionally, it’s a great time to buy a house, or renew your home in some way. At least have people over and allow good feelings to fill your environment! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ll be feeling positive and uplifted. You also have a great opportunity to have a clean slate with relationships. Truly let the past be the past. Meditate to release old hurts and dysfunctional patterns. See each person in your life with innocent eyes, not judging them by what has been. This spiritual practice will open your heart in a wonderful way. You’ll even notice a huge increase of your intuition, so pay attention to your guidance! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You have many options coming for abundance! You can get a raise, a new job and also much recognition at work! It’s good to see how valuable people think you are! The next spiritual step is to feel that high level of worth within yourself. Keep meditating on and saying positive affirmations about body image, personal value, and general self-love. Surround yourself with people who don’t buy in to shallow cultural notions of beauty or success. Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practitioner.
