Dear Friend, Are we all addicted to something? And does the elimination of one addiction lead to the creation of another? I asked some Evolving readers for their thoughts:

16 Freedom from Addictions

"Yes! Everyone has some addiction I think. It seems I just transfer my addictions. I try to make the replacement more healthy, though. For example, when I stopped cigarettes, I got seriously addicted to working out. Now that I've given up beer, I'm unfortunately eating more sweets. Moderation is what I keep telling myself.” —Shannon B. "I think love and self-awareness either prevent and/or release us from addictions since most addictions are a result of self-esteem issues or environmental programming.” —Jim B.

17 Meditation & Addiction

"I think I am addicted to being busy. If I stay REAL busy, I don't have time to think about the things in my life that need work. I would call it a coping mechanism but when I try to slow down, I can't. That is why, for me, busyness is an addiction. I can't not be busy." —Kathy L. From the responses, it appears most people are struggling with one form of addiction or another. Although some aren’t life threatening, the feelings of powerlessness over addiction can still be overwhelming. I believe in the power of sharing our stories; and the benefits we receive from hearing them. The powerfully inspiring articles this month address these issues and offer help and hope for overcoming addiction.

Father Peter Bowes on the Virtues of Modern Day Monastic Life

I

magine coming home from your job as an IT Manager, graphic designer or occupational therapist, and joining your spiritual family; including ordained priests, deacons and other spiritual students, in the church where you all live together and are dedicated to growing together spiritually. According to a recent article by Father Peter Bowes, this type of life can greatly accelerate one's personal growth and connection with God, IF it is a spiritual community where honest communication is expected. Says Bowes: "Living with spiritually inclined people can be exhilarating and inspiring as it increases the chances that you will see reflected in the eyes of others the real impact of your feelings, motives and intentions...Your actions and feelings are registered by others and known in ways you may not be used to in other living situations. People dedicated to grow and learn spiritually are intent on awareness, consciousness and responsible interactions so they are not

inclined to be fake or phony." Father Peter speaks from experience, having lived in and directed several spiritual communities throughout his life. Father Peter is the co-founder of the Order of Christ-Sophia, a nondenominational mystic Christian order, and the subject of a recent book, The Order of Christ Sophia; The Children of Jesus and Mary, by noted new religious movement scholar Jim Lewis. The order

currently has 15 Centers of Light around the country, several of which have live-in spiritual communities, including the Chicago Center of Light, where Father Peter lives with six other ministers and spiritual students who also have professional jobs. Father Peter is available for interviews on the subjects of spiritual community, connecting with God and modern spirituality. Father Peter is a passionate, articulate and candid interview subject who often gains notice for his willingness to challenge norms as well as for his entertaining and humorous approach to conversation topics. Father Peter travels around the country on a weekly basis, teaching and giving seminars on spiritual growth. He has been a featured interview subject on several radio shows and is the author of three books and 11 devotional music CDs. Organic: Making it Real If organic or naturally raised animal products are too expensive, consider eating more beans, tempeh, nuts and seeds. By Bethany Klug Last month I wrote about the personal and planetary reasons for going organic. Now, let’s talk about how to make it real in your life starting with food. Know your grower. Organic certification is expensive. Many local growers may raise food according to or even beyond the national organic standards, but do not get certified. Most growers take pleasure in educating their customers, so ask. Buy organic animal products first. This will clear a huge amount of hormones, antibiotics and other toxins from your diet. Plus the flavor is outstanding. Once you taste a pastured egg, you’ll never go back to grocery store eggs. Grass is the key. The animal, whether raised for flesh, milk or eggs, should be fed on grass up until slaughter. Some growers finish the animals on corn. Nutritionally, a corn-finished animal is hardly different from an industrially raised one. Grass is the key, so be sure to ask if the animal ate grass until it was slaughtered. They say the meat is "free range." This term has no technical definition and as such is meaningless. If they don't know, don’t buy it. Where to buy clean animal products. I recommend finding a local source from the Kansas City Food Circle’s Producers Directory at www.kcfoodcircle.org. Also, check your local organic farmers market. The Brookside market has at least three meat or poultry vendors and several egg vendors.

What about cost? If organic or naturally raised animal products are too expensive, consider eating more beans, tempeh, nuts and seeds. Also remember that eating organic now costs a lot less than a heart attack or cancer later. Consult the Fish List. Know your farmer also applies to fish and seafood. One can no longer presume that wild fish are nutritious and safe, while farmed fish are not. California Academy of Sciences publishes a wallet guide to buying fish at research.calacademy.org/ aquatic/seafood.

Resources for Organic Foods The Organic Pages Online The Organic Trade Association offers a searchable online directory of its members. theorganicpages.com Organic. It’s Worth it The Organic Trade Association’s consumer web site provides many resources and articles of interest to consumers interested in organic agriculture and products. organicitsworthit.org. Clean up nuts, seeds and grains. The degree of pesticide use on nuts and seeds varies, but nearly all are fumigated with chemicals during transport and storage. Grain production is pesticide intensive and the hybrids are thought to cause sensitivities and other inflammatory issues. Organic growers often use older varieties that are better tolerated. Shift to organic produce. Environmental Working Group maintains the Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce. The wallet card lists the top 12 produce items to buy organic and the “clean 15” you can buy industrial. Find the wallet guide at www.foodnews.org/ walletguide.php and the full list at www.foodnews.org/fulllist.php. A patient of Carl Jung’s in the early 1930s had a serious alcohol addiction. He worked with Dr. Jung for a year or so and achieved sobriety and emotional stability. He left therapy and immediately relapsed. Returning to Dr. Jung, he again asked for help. Dr. Jung told him that he had come to the place of hopelessness and needed to have a spiritual experience as his "craving for alcohol was the equivalent of a low level of the thirst of our being for wholeness." Bill W., one of the founders of AA wrote to Carl Jung to express his appreciation for his work with Roland, which influenced the writing of steps 1 & 2 in the 12step AA program. The spiritual experience that Jung speaks of can be as simple as an insight that changes ones perspective, a connection with nature, or the connection with a sense of the power within or around us. For some it is embracing spirituality in a religious context or some sort of spiritual practice found in many different cultural traditions. A protocol using alpha-theta neurofeedback, developed by Peniston & Kulkosky in the late 1980s and early 1990s has shown great effectiveness in assisting advanced alcoholics to attain and keep sobriety. Being in the alpha-theta brainwave state enhances creativity and is associated with vivid visualization, multi-sensory imagery and dream-like states. The promise of this approach is found in the assistance it gives the substance abuser in connecting with the inner resources of the whole brain/body-mind. In these altered

The participants in Peniston & Kulkosky’s studies were less stressed, less depressed and had far fewer relapses than those who participated in standard substance abuse treatment. They were able to access the alphatheta brainwave states easily and increased beta-endorphin levels. In one study, after 21 months, only one of 14 participants had relapsed. Another approach that has shown great promise is acupuncture. Dr. Michael Smith developed the Ear Acupuncture Protocol in the 1970s at Lincoln Hospital, the Bronx, NY. Acupuncture increases levels of endogenous endorphins, directly acts on the central nervous system, increases circulation, stimulates the immune system, reduces withdrawal symptoms, has a calming effect, lowers anxiety and substantially reduces cravings. An in-patient treatment program in Delaware using this protocol had a decline in recidivism from 87 percent to 18 percent. This protocol is used in nearly 1,000 licensed drug treatment programs in the U.S., in prisons and psychiatric hospitals

and other facilities around the world. With both approaches, the participants feel less stress, symptoms are greatly reduced and sobriety is maintained for longer periods of time. The participants are more likely to go to 12-step groups and counseling and report doing much better in work and personal relationships. These approaches bring a person closer to that "spiritual experience" that Carl Jung and Bill W. agreed was a key part of recovery. In my experience, any approach which helps a person experience the whole brain, awakening the healing neurochemicals, will move him/her to that inner experience. The Neurobehavioral Program developed by Dr. John Leonard helps people reduce stress and anxiety, moving people into a state of peaceful alertness. Research has shown that hypnosis, multi-sensory imagery and meditation all assist in changing states of consciousness, reducing stress and anxiety, producing a state of peaceful alertness. A 2006 study by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services reported that 22.6 million or 9.4 percent of Americans over the age of 12 are dependent on drugs or alcohol. Four million are addicted to prescription drugs. Add all the other addictions such as gambling, food or sex, and you know the problem is truly quite universal. We are all addicts, some far more serious than others, and can all benefit from integrating one or more of these approaches as a daily practice. We can then enjoy the "spiritual experience" as part of our everyday life. Jude LaClaire, Ph.D., LCPC, LCSW, is a counselor, educator and author. Holistic

By Jayana DeWolf What are the first words that come to mind when you hear the word “addiction”? Most would say drugs, alcohol and smoking. There are numerous treatment options for the chemically addicted and their loved ones, but what if the addiction wasn’t to a chemical? What if an individual were addicted to unhealthy personal habits? Where would that person go for help? Hopefully they would find someone like Karen Rowinsky, counselor and owner of Karen Rowinsky Counseling Services, who specializes in relationship therapy and the addictive behaviors that prevent people from forming and maintaining healthy bonds and leading happy, hopeful lives. Karen started helping others in 1983, when she and two of her friends started a non-profit group, The Family Center, in Topeka, Kansas. They were contracted by the hospital birthing center to provide community health education to young women experiencing unplanned pregnancies and moms wanting to raise strong daughters. She created and taught childbirth preparation classes, provided breastfeeding support, and facilitated parenting groups. After a few years, the program grew to include women at mid-life and people who had chronic or life threatening illness. Throughout the first eight years, as her non-profit program grew, Karen enjoyed a full life as wife, mother, educator and volunteer, serving on several national women’s health and childbirth education boards. All of this changed when her two partners quit and soon after her husband was diagnosed with liver disease. Suddenly she was in charge of everything in her world. She hired and trained program assistants and for two years she was the primary caregiver to her husband before, during and after both his surgeries. Unfortunately, right after celebrating their 40th birthdays and only

Karen Rowinsky helps her clients recognize the subtle patterns that disrupt their ability to live the happy life they desire. She gives them healthier alternatives and patiently supports them as they learn to put them into practice. months from their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, her husband passed away. Karen continued to run the program for five more years, raise her children and serve on the board of directors of the International Childbirth Education Association, the National Association of Women's Health and the Kansas Women's Mental Health Foundation. She was filling the void she felt by working harder to make a difference. In 1999, her whole life changed again when, over the course of a few months, she remarried, put her house on the market, closed The Family Center, and moved to Kansas City. She decided to use her experiences as a catalyst for reaching others and decided to begin speaking and writing professionally about managing life’s changes. A few months later, her mother-inlaw passed away and her husband was diagnosed with kidney disease. Again, Karen juggled her fulltime career and care-giving as her husband went through surgery and recovery. Fortunately, he made a complete recovery and Karen was able to devote her full attention to

traveling throughout the United States speaking to large audiences about health care and women’s health issues. She wrote her first book Come Alive! 50 Ways to Have More Energy Now. Using her personal experiences as a way to help others actually helped her make a little more sense of all the change in her life. Toward the end of her full-time speaking career, helping family caregivers manage the challenges of caring for a loved one, she realized speaking to a large audience was not as rewarding as working with individuals. It was then she decided to become a counselor. In 2004, Karen returned to school and, at age fifty-nine, graduated with a Bachelors and Masters degree in social work. She started her private practice with the intent to focus on women; however, she soon realized a common theme to their issues— unhealthy relationship habits. If she had learned anything from all the change in her life it was to be open to change. Today, she helps men and women of all ages and lifestyles discover and work through the compulsive, unhealthy personal habits affecting their relationships. She helps her clients recognize the subtle patterns that disrupt their ability to live the happy lives they desire. She gives them healthier alternatives and patiently supports them as they learn to put them into practice. Mental Health Wellness By Nancy Russell, M.D. Are you not sick, but not well? Are you the kind of patient many doctors can’t seem to help? Your doctor may say to you, “I can’t find anything wrong.” And it’s true. There’s nothing immediately obvious to treat and the standard laboratory tests are normal. In this case, you may suffer from a neurotransmitter imbalance. Common symptoms can include: feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress and fatigue, irregular sleep patterns, poor concentration, headaches, cravings or addictions, binge eating, aches and pains, behavioral problems, lack of focus, mind racing or lack of motivation. Our mental health is not as simple as it may seem. There is interconnectedness between the different biological systems in the body. The nervous, endocrine, and immune systems of our bodies all influence each other. These systems are also influenced by our genetics, environment, emotions, values and beliefs. Common complaints such as stress and fatigue, anxiety and depression, sleep disorders and insomnia can be treated with conventional prescription medications and be effective in many cases. As a holistic physician, I see patients that either do not want to take prescription medications or have not obtained good results from these medications or could not tolerate the side effects. Getting to the root of the problem is the goal; by assessing family of origin issues, genetics, stress management strategies and in some cases, neurotransmitter levels. As Dr Mehmet Oz, says in his book, You, Staying Young; The Owners Manual for Extending Your Warranty. “The good part is that food, exercise and good sleep work as dials on your neurotransmitter radio, regulating how you feel from day to day and hour to hour, and thus have a profound impact on the emotional side of aging.” Yes, you can impact how you deal with stress by learning relaxation techniques, meditation or exploring underlying issues with psychotherapy. The human nervous system is one of the most complex systems in nature. The brain is like the ultimate communications company. It’s in the business of sending and receiving messages that help dictate how you act, how you feel, whether you want to be asleep, or whether you are craving drugs or chocolate. The brain is the center of the nervous system and contains over 100 billion cells called neurons. The nerves of your body communicate through spaces called synapses with chemicals called neurotransmitters. Some of these neurotransmitters include serotonin, epinephrine, nor epinephrine, dopamine, gaba and glutamate. There are alternative laboratory tests that can be obtained to assess these levels. When imbalances are determined, treatment consists of amino acids, minerals

and herbs. These treatments, combined with lifestyle changes, can prevent the need for prescription medications in many individuals. Helene Leonetti, M.D. writes an interesting story about depression in Hard Wired for Love, Nurturing Yourself to Vibrant Health. Dr Leonetti writes, “The hell of depression is a place I will never again allow myself to visit. Each day, as I showed the world my smile, my soul was screaming in agony, for I was living a life not of my choosing. In an effort to be a good girl and dutiful wife, I let my husband decide what was best for me, and he saw to it that my life was in his full control. I had sold out. I allowed my own hopes and dreams to die in the ill-fated attempt to please someone else. It never works to do that. When we do not stay in integrity, when we allow our soul’s longings to be squelched, some part of us dies. It can be cell tissue and we develop cancer or another deadly illness; or it can be, as in my case, the death of my soul, which carried with it a far more virulent, and possibly fatal, outcome. The hand of God has always tweaked me, and this time was no exception. Struggling out from the depths of this nightmare, I mobilized myself with profound, healing anger and rallied to free myself from the bondage to which I had so willingly conspired”. Dr Leonetti did recover from her depression. One major reason for depression is that we give our power away to another and bury our own wants and desires. Expressing feelings in a journal format is a place to start. Engaging conversation with a psychotherapist, clergy member or trusted friend can also begin the journey to wholeness and health. Other success keys are regular exercise, healthy nutrition, good sleep and stress management strategies. If all there measures fail, seek the assistance of an alternative health care provider to discuss neurotransmitter testing and treatment. If you would like to learn more about this process, call my office to set up an initial consultation visit. I have made my way back from depression and invite you to share your journey with me. I am very happy to be your guide and confidante. Nancy Russell, M.D., holistic Internal medicine physician has practiced in the Kansas City northland for 28 years. Dr. Russell blends traditional and alternative medicine in her holistic medical practice. As a founding member of the American Board of Holistic medicine, she is board certified in holistic medicine. Dr Russell believes, “Love is our most powerful medicine”. Holistic medicine is individualized, gets to the root of the problem and develops a partnership between physician and patient. Allergies, eye problems, trouble waking, craving salt and mid-back pain can be a stagnant liver. Look for the wrinkle line between the brow of the forehead. Dizziness, ringing in the ears, low back pain and weak legs are signs of a stagnant kidney, as are dark circles under the eyes (also sinus congestion). Talking loud or very low, a scattered mind, confused speech, depression, mental illness and an aversion to heat indicate heart stagnation. Look for puckering and curling at the end of the ear. Chocolate and caffeine cravings: stagnation of the body.

Freedom from Addictions By Maitreya Zohar Am I an expert on addictions? I believe so. Am I an expert on freedom? I believe not. I have journeyed, as I am sure many of you have, with addictive behaviors. I have abused alcohol, sex, illegal drugs, sugar and sports. I have identified myself with depression, worry, judgment, anxiety and fear. I have struggled with worthiness, self-esteem and suffering. I have needed the feelings of being in love, anger, happiness, rage, “the high” and shame. I have attached myself to feelings of lack, not enough, guilt, failure and victimhood. I have tricked myself with pride, arrogance and righteousness. I have been addicted to healers, teachers and therapists. I have rationed myself with television, work and keeping busy. I could go on, but why? Bottom line is: I have not attempted every possible thing that one could be addicted to because I believe that, as humans, we have the capacity to be addicted to every thing possible. Through the experiences of this life and numerous others, I believe I have mastered the lesson of “I AM an addict.” If you are reading this, I have a feeling you know what I’m talking about. I looked up the word freedom on dictionary.com and was pulled to the following definition: freedom— the power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without. Let that sink in for a moment. We are all experts in making both conscious and unconscious choices, but are we experts on making choices free from all constraints? At present, I am not. One of my greatest constraints or addictions that I have been creating and choosing lifetime after lifetime is the illusion of separation. When I experience wholeness and connectedness, I am free of all constraints. I have no past to be ashamed of or feel guilty about. I have no future to fail. I have only the moment and, in this space, fear and anxiety cease. In the moment, I AM connected and all the choices I make from this alignment of body, mind and spirit, are free, liberated and whole. An obstacle to this connectedness, however, is my attachment to a form of amnesia, an infectious forgetfulness that often gets the better of me. At any moment I could choose to remember, “I AM a spark of the Divine.” But far too often I disappear into a fog of forgetfulness. At any moment I could choose to embrace, “I AM a master soul who chose and continually chooses every minute detail of my incarnation here on Earth.” But far too often I glaze over and forget this, too. At any moment I could choose to recall, “I AM eternally

connected to All that is and ever will be.” But far too often I allow the distractions of daily life to blind me from this truth. Taking action while under the influence of this amnesia results in my making choices that only seem to perpetuate the experience of illusion, imbalance and the absolute lie of my separateness from Source. Yet, simply knowing this is not enough; knowledge in and of itself will never heal an addiction. So what actions do we take to access this level of freedom that liberates us from All constraints? For some, the action will be therapy, counseling or psychiatry. For others, it may be 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous or Food Addicts in Recovery, workshops or education of an empowerment or healing nature. Still others may seek out spirituality in nature, religion or what some call the “new age” movement. Wherever your Spirit calls you to explore, I encourage one quality above all: Love. Some of us have experienced love from a pure and unconditional frequency. Others have experienced love from the frequency of abuse. Create for yourself an unequivocally pure essence love. Declare it! Choose it from your Spirit. During a time in my spiritual training, when I would “misbehave” with my tutor, he would love me.

When I would be “perfect”, he would love me. My behavior didn’t seem to matter—he would just love me. His love was never based on my actions. At first, I didn’t know what to do with that. I didn’t know how to be loved regardless of my behavior. Love seemed always in the realm of duality—right and wrong, good and bad. He modeled that love has nothing to do with anything other than the person who is allowing love to flow through him or her. He made the choice to allow love to flow all the time. He was not constrained by what I did and did not do. He chose the flow of love and love flowed through him. Another key teaching that follows on the heels of love is committing to a life full of joy, fun, laughter, levity and lightness—not taking life so seriously. My addiction to being serious has been one of my biggest lessons. I somehow bought into the belief that said if I am serious, then I will be respected and listened to. I choose and re-choose this behavior and currently I am applying the healing frequency of love to this constraint through Ho’oponopono (look it up on a computer search engine if you like). ALLOW LOVE. Open your heart to yourself. Choose to stop shutting yourself out through addictive behavior. Allow LOVE. We have so many adjectives to describe love—conditional or unconditional, healthy or abusive. LOVE is just love. Drop the adjectives, as they place constraints on the very thing I believe heals all addictions. The adjectives are the mind’s way of limiting the limitless. Remember, the mind is at its best when led by the heart. In conclusion, I will share a simple technique for parents and those who desire to have children; the Masters taught this technique to me. Lovingly hug your children once a day. Teach them to receive one loving hug daily throughout their life. Practice this simple action and they will never suffer with addiction. Rev. Maitreya Zohar has relocated to Olathe and is available for healing/energy sessions, readings, channelings and other life-transforming opportunities. He leads workshops on recovering from addictions in which you learn the root of all your addictive behavior; example: separation. Maitreya is a co-founder of Land of OM, LLC, a spiritual center and community in Overland Park, and the author of Sisterhood of the Dove: Clarion Call of Mary Magdalene, which may be purchased in person or on Amazon at www.outskirtspress.com/SisterhoodOfTheDove. Meditation & Addiction By Lynn Young

Meditation is becoming a popular tool in helping those who suffer with addictions. It is no longer limited to Eastern spiritual practices and is even mentioned as the 11th step in common 12-Step recovery programs. Meditation is appealing to many because some types of meditation can be practiced with ease, anywhere or anytime. Treating addiction has often involved traditional recovery techniques employed by such groups as Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous, entering a rehabilitation facility or outpatient treatment. Talk therapy (psychotherapy) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) are often used in treatment programs due to their effectiveness. Some programs may even emphasize a humanistic approach to treatment in order to build self-esteem and selfawareness. Dialectical behavioral therapy involves mindfulness living and the use of deduction to track down nonworking cognitive programs, changing them to a healthier outlook. Gaining more self respect is part of this approach: “In order for an individual to succeed in their recovery, they must first learn to love and respect themselves. Dialectical behavior therapy teaches self-reliance and the proper way to rebuild self-image." (Michael's House, 2009) One method currently being used for addictions are medications such as methadone or buproprion which may help some individuals reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms; but, may also cause unpleasant side effects or may not be effective for certain individuals. Other methods such as longterm psychotherapy may not be supported by many health plans. The spiritual or religious aspects of some programs may conflict with personal beliefs, ruling them out. Meditation offers many individuals suffering with addic-

tion another tool for their recovery. A recent trend is to combine meditation with more traditional therapies for addiction recovery. For instance, Australian addiction counselors Radha Nicholson and Brendan Healy have created the “Bay Approach”, that combines meditation techniques with psychotherapy. “You observe your thoughts and feelings, without becoming attached to them. From this perspective, you can begin to see the subtle patterns and habits around your addictive behaviour. When you are aware of how they influence you, they have less hold over you,” states Nicholson. (Stephens, 2009). In addition, meditation and its effect on addiction recovery is being seriously observed by academics at such institutions as the University of Washington where Professor Alan Marlatt, director of the Addictive Behaviors Research Center, is researching the effectiveness of meditation techniques in relapse prevention. Along those lines, the Buddhist Recovery Network was formed in 2008 as a response to the increased use of mindfulness-based therapy in treating addictions. Their spokesman, Paul Santilan, states that the Network’s goal is to encourage relevant academic research and promote the benefits of meditation methods for addiction recovery. “Over 500 studies show that meditation raises levels of serotonin, the ‘feel good’ chemical deficient in addicts,” explains Santilan. (Stephens, 2009) A recent Psychology Today article by Ronald Alexander, Ph.D., director of the Open Mind Training Institute and teacher at UCLA, Pepperdine, and Pacifica Graduate Institute, reinforces the physiological basis for meditation’s effectiveness in helping those with addictions in that it “lowers the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your bloodstream …which can affect neuro-

transmitter receptors and alter your mood.” (Alexander 2010). Alexander also recommends meditation as an excellent way to help mood regulation because scientists have observed that meditation stimulates activity in the part of the brain that is responsible for regulating emotions. The most effective meditation methods focus on quieting the mind and clearing its “chatter”. One cannot stop mind chatter unless they achieve a deep trance state that bypasses the chatter. Some techniques use music, specific postures while chanting, breathing techniques, visualization and guided imagery. I have used many of these techniques unsuccessfully. A local practitioner, Swami Ramaraaja (a/k/a S.R. Stone, DD, VHT, RMT), author of Going Clear, Doorway to the Divine has had success with helping individuals fighting addictions by employing her own brand of methods that are called “tracking”. She combines this with deep trance meditation in order to uncover root causes of addiction so that they may be eliminated in a similar way as the Bay Approach, DBT and CBT where the attachment to behavioural patterns are released uncovering the deep-seated issues behind their addictions.

Stone invented a type of deep trance meditation called “Samadhi Nirvana Yoga (SNY) Meditation”. What makes SNY meditation so effective for many people is that one can finally lower their brain waves into deep delta and beyond within a few seconds. All I have to do is to use a trigger that was given to me by Swami Ramaraaja (Stone) during my “meditation initiation” so that I can return to that state anytime that I desire, especially if I get stressed out during the day. Others who have used this particular type of meditation technique taught at the Mystic Tiger Ashram have remarked that they have greatly reduced or even eliminated medications (with their doctor’s knowledge and approval) that they had been taking for a variety of psychological and addiction issues. Healing the Energy of Addictions by Lauralei I grew up seeing energy. And being part of a family where most everyone was addicted to something. I learned to recognize addiction energy at an early age. It is not easy to watch; and even harder, I imagine, to experience. I see addictions as distorted, dark, shapes in a person’s energy field or aura. Addiction energy can also look like a fog, a blob or as a dead, dark, weight on the inside of someone’s organs. Addictions of any kind hinder our spiritual development and keep us from moving forward on our spiritual path. Spiritual healers have used numerous methods to temper the energy of addictions and to free clients from their grasp. In my thirty plus years of energy work, I have come to believe that addictions are not a negative energy attached to a soul—but rather the loss of something positive. What if one of the reasons addictions are created is because something vital is missing from a person’s soul on a deep energy level? What if the thing that is missing creates an imbalance in so many ways for that soul, that it is impossible for them to function on a day-to-day, much less moment-to-moment basis? Our auras vibrate around us and energize our physical, emotional and mental bodies. Each person’s aura contains all the experiences, all the goals for their life, and all knowledge their particular soul has acquired. Each aura is unique, just like each of us is unique. Additionally, we all have a unique energy signature or energy pattern. The same is true of every plant, animal, and mineral. Each has a unique and individual energy signature. No two are ever alike. These are very similar to a fingerprint or DNA, and they can be seen by clairvoyants. If a trauma has closed, removed or damaged an energy pattern that a soul needs to complete their mission in this life, they either need to get it back, adjust the mission or die. You cannot imagine the pain of a soul, attached to an addicted body, unless you have been there. As spiritual healers, we know energy cannot be created or destroyed. This is the fundamental Law of the Conservation of Energy. I am always amazed when I see healers pull things out of clients, (like I used to), and then just throw them out into the air. They haven’t yet learned that your unique energy pattern makes sure at some point that energy will always return to you, in the way, shape and form it was sent out. If not in this lifetime, then in the next one. This is another one of those fun-

Perhaps, solving the problem of an addiction is to find the other half of the misshapen energy pattern. Perhaps, when it is found it not only removes the addiction from a person, but actually leaves a positive energy pattern in its place. damental laws: Karma. So, let’s look at addictions as the loss of something positive, in your aura, and not as the addition of something negative. Suppose addictions are distorted energy that is just missing some of its parts? Perhaps its original function was to vibrate light, love and spiritual growth; but thru some kind of trauma, past or present, those vital programs have been damaged and misshapen. The Chinese tell us for every Ying there is a Yang. Why would this not be true for addiction or dis-ease? Could the cure for an addiction be as simple as finding the other half of an energy pattern, which when complete, removes the addiction from the soul to whom it was attached? I believe joining and re-establishing the original geometric shape of the pattern causes remarkable results on an energy level. Perhaps, solving the problem of an addiction is to find the other half of the misshapen energy pattern. Perhaps, when it is found it not only removes the addiction from a person, but actually leaves a positive energy pattern in its place. Which will, ultimately, return that soul back to its spiritual path and back to its mission in this life. Think how strange half of a coin, or half of anything, would look, sliced down the middle. Then how easily recognizable the same object is when we hold the two halves together. This is the same with the energy pattern of an addiction—call back its other half and it doesn’t make the addiction worse, it completes its geometric shape, creates what it was meant to be. For every vibration, addictive or otherwise, there is another vibration that completes and raises it, and there is also one that surpasses it. Soul retrieval is one of the least utilized and most needed practices of spiritual healers. Believe it or not, a healer might want to actually guide a client through a meditative session to call back the lost halves of their addictive patterns. Guided hypnosis, self-hypnosis and subliminal hypnosis are all great tools for the client to use on their own. They rein-

force soul retrieval, past life regressions, Reiki and any other spiritual work completed with a spiritual healer. Another methodology to explore, when dealing with the energy of addictions, is that every object has a resonant frequency—the natural frequency at which an object, a disease, or an addiction vibrates. When we match the frequency of anything, we are completing it. But what if we surpassed it? Let’s go back to the 60s (I think), and a Memorex Commercial in which Ella Fitzgerald’s singing voice hits a high note and shatters a glass. The reason this can happen is because the note the singer hits vibrates to the exact frequency the glass vibrates to on the physical plane. This is also known as YING coming together with its YANG. When we match the same tone as the natural frequency of the glass, it will cause the glass to move or vibrate. Taking it one step further, you can raise the volume of the note, which will surpass the ability of the glass (or addiction) to maintain its shape, and will cause the glass (or addictive pattern) to shatter. Now some of you might think glass shards are not a positive change; but, if the glass represents our addiction, it no longer has the ability to perform its previous function, which in the glass’s case is holding liquid and in the addiction’s case is need of the substance. So glass shards can be a good thing. Glass Shards can now be recycled into sometime more, something better, or granulated back into pure sand or pure energy and returned to the ocean. So as far as addiction patterns go, we can match, then surpass their resonance and frequency, cause them to shatter and return them to their purest form of raw energy. Undoubtedly, this is why chanting, singing bowls and mantras are so popular. On some level we know they are raising our vibration and shattering our glasses into shards. If you don’t have the singing voice of Ella Fitzgerald, I would encourage the use of subconscious sound frequencies, and

my favorite is quartz crystals. Crystals never stop growing and they have a natural pulse; they are in all electronics, including your watch, computer, radio, etc. This pulse can be heard on a subconscious level. I believe it is possible to place a thought in a crystal and it will pulse that thought to your subconscious mind. To use them with a client, surround the client in a circle of quartz. Slowly add quartz around the client until the client begins to feel comfortable, energized and relaxed. You have now just matched the natural frequency to which that client vibrates. After a bit, increase the number of crystals until the client becomes uncomfortable. Uncomfortable can be anything from a headache, to hearing humming, to becoming restless. Let them cook, uncomfortably, in the circle of quartz for a good twenty minutes, then gradually decrease the number of crystals around them until they are comfortable again. Wait about five minutes, then start adding the quartz again. Repeat this at least 2-3 times in an hour and a half period. You may have to do several treatments over the course of several weeks, depending on the situation and the client. Additionally, a crystal can also be programmed for a person to wear after a crystal treatment. Since the subconscious mind believes and incorporates whatever it hears repeatedly, wearing the crystal can help a person make positive changes in their lives. Lastly, the important thing to focus on is that we live in a geometric universe with the universal language of math. All the laws of physics are universal. We are living Sacred Geometry. When we learn to see past the physical body and the physical plane, we can look deeper into the actual energy which creates the currents and directions on which our lives move. This is how we are going to find the answers on how to balance not only our physical bodies, but our unique essence, our unique abilities and the unique energy patterns which comprise our souls. spiritual horoscopes

Spiritual Horoscope for July By Aluna Michaels, M.A.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Happy birthday, Cancer! Be patient with yourself and changes you want to make. It’s time for meditation and visualization, but not quite time for manifestation. Ask your soul for small steps you can take that will provide a foundation for future abundance and happiness. Also, tell loved ones you appreciate their compliments and encouragement. Dwell on their words as positive affirmations. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Don’t give up on spiritual disciplines and personal growth activities! Analyze them to see if the path you are on is right for you. But don’t abandon a method because you’re not getting fast results. Maybe the Universe is saying what you’re asking isn’t your highest good. A great mantra would be “I am open to my highest good no matter what it looks like”. You’ll also have insights into new avenues of prosperity! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You might start a new relationship, or have opportunities to improve your current partnership. But here’s the key: heal your self esteem. If you’re super self-critical, your heart won’t be open to receive love. Stand up to those negative voices in your head! Forgive people who’ve judged you in the past! Also, be aware of your own judgments of others. They cover up your fear of intimacy. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Don’t be afraid to make changes in relationships by setting healthy boundaries. Any person who won’t accept your limits needs to go! You’ll make room for ethical people. This will be a revolution in your world. You need people who treat you as good as you treat others! In other news, you might start a new health or fitness regimen that helps you lose weight and firm up. Don’t be overly strict because you need gentleness too.

Happy birthday, Cancer! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Beware of old resentments popping up. Also, look for subtle ways you sabotage yourself. Meditation time is easier if you add movement (yoga, walking, tai chi, etc). You can burn off some aggressive energy, clear your mind and get to the truth of your soul. Forgiveness will open your life to better health and less anxiety. You might also have opportunities at work, since you will be emotionally available and people find you approachable. People want to be around you when you’re peaceful. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Relationships are going to a deeper level. This can make you feel “trapped”, or bring up thoughts of failed bonds from the past. Use your meditation time to calm your heart. Don’t make any rash decisions this month. Trusted friends help you stay balanced. Don’t let your ego tell you that the person is “boring”, or that “the thrill is gone”. The true thrill is experiencing more intimacy. Stick with things until you feel renewed excitement. Meanwhile, try to think of this an adventure into uncharted waters. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Your career is at an all-time high! Saturn is helping you achieve many dreams. However, if you feel stuck, see what you need to let go of in order to reap your rewards in the job area. Don’t stay if you’re not getting the pay, respect and challenge you

deserve! Also, rid your home of clutter. It’s important not to feel bogged down in your living space. At the same time, look at ways to heal unhealthy emotional patterns with family. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You’re reaping the benefits of commitment to your spiritual practice and to your personal growth. Keep confronting old concepts. Think to yourself, “Is that idea really true for me?” Then you can release even more “programs” that keep you from being happier and more successful. Seek a meditation group or a yoga school – a place where people are as disciplined as you. It’s time to gain comrades on the spiritual path. Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You have a very open heart, but sometimes you can be too dependant on people. Make sure you are practicing meditation in order to connect with your Higher Self. You’ll increase intuition and develop inner security to make your own decisions, rather than relying on others. You’ll be able to be closer with people because you won’t feel betrayed when they act human. You could also be starting a new relationship, so you’ll be off on the right foot. Aries (March 21 – April 19) You are changing on so many levels – physically, emotionally, spiritually. Help your romantic partner

and close friends understand your shifts. Be patient as they adapt to the evolving you! You could be making an intense commitment in a relationship, even in a business relationship. Make sure these people are flexible and open-minded. You don’t want to change anyone; they need to keep up with you, and also spur you on to higher growth. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Don’t be discouraged about old habits and thought patterns raising their ugly heads. You’ve actually conquered them, and this is their “last hurrah”. Be grateful that you’re not living with them every day! Be kind to yourself during this “final cleanse”. Maybe take a day off work and get a massage. Take walks in nature. Call a friend who is positive and upbeat. You’re so much further ahead in your personal growth than you know! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Examine commitments. It’s common for you to start on a high, then get “bored” or cause arguments when things get more intense. Meditate to become more familiar with your depths. Build friendships, relationships and activities based on less superficial traits and interests. Life won’t be ponderous, because you’ll always attract people with a sense of humor. You’ll be able to grow emotionally and spiritually as well as have fun. Aluna Michaels is a secondgeneration astrologer and soul evolutionist practitioner. Open Circle has just announced two encore screenings of MAY I BE FRANK, a cinematic celebration of personal transformation. This new film is about Frank Ferrante, a fifty-something Sicilian from Brooklyn with a history of drug and alcohol abuse, bad eating, taking multiple medications for depression and fighting to cure himself of Hep-C. By placing his fate in the hands of three, young, vegan hipsters from San Francisco's Café Gratitude, Frank is physically and emotionally transformed. (mayibefrankferrante.com) When MAY I BE FRANK premiered on June 16, a sold-out crowd laughed (and cried) and was on its feet cheering at the end. But dozens of people were turned away at the door, with scores more hearing rave reviews from their friends. Frank Ferrante and director Gregg Marks have happily agreed to return to be in attendance for the encore screenings on Wednesday and Thursday, July 7 & 8 at 7:00pm at the Tivoli Cinemas in Westport. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Preview the film and purchase tickets at www.OpenCircleOnline.com or order by phone at (816) 931-0738.
