Dear Friend,

There are many ways to create a sense of community. Whether by starting a community garden, joining a church group or helping out at local charities, there are numerous ways to help others, gain a sense of community and create change in your neighborhood. This month we celebrate community and explore ways to envision and create a better world. Also inside this special issue is our annual Women in Business supplement. As the owner of a woman-owned business, I’ve seen the challenges, dedication, joys and drive necessary to work not only as a woman in business, but independently. It is a journey filled with the strength that comes from pursuing your dreams. Anyone who has heeded the call of her heart, found the courage to pursue her dreams and taken action toward these goals knows the joys about which I speak. I honor all who daily strive toward creating a vision as a woman-owned business. Starting on page 13, these pages are dedicated to the bold visionaries in our community: Women who dare to share their gifts.

Kansas City is all set to welcome Spiritual Philosopher and Best-Selling Author, Tim Freke, in what is set to be two of the most amazing Mystery Experiences of all time. The evening is to begin with an “Encounter with Tim Freke” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., which includes both a discussion on his new book, The Mystery Experience, and a book signing. The evening tops off from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with HuDost in concert featuring Moksha Sommer from Montreal and Jemal Wade Hines from New York. The cost for all of this: Encounter with Tim Freke, a copy of The Mystery Experience and HuDost in concert is just $40.00. Next, there will be a three-day relaxed -intensive, The Mystery Experience Retreat at Savior Pastoral Center, 12601 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, KS. This retreat begins on Friday, July 6 at 5 p.m. and concludes on Sunday, July 8 by 3:30 p.m. The cost for the retreat is $375 and includes lodging and all meals (Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast and lunch). Both of these events are in conjunction with Tim’s newest book, The Mystery Experience: Revolutionary Approach to Spiritual Awakening. “The simple practices I explore in this book,” Freke says, “will enable you to

both become conscious of the ‘deep self’ and to lovingly embrace your tender, vulnerable humanity. The goal is not to achieve some perfect state of ‘enlightenment,’ but rather to become a ‘lover of life,’ engaging the challenges you face as a transformative adventure.” “Put simply,” Freke adds, “this book is about the WOW of awakening. The deep WOW of appreciating the mystery of existence. The ecstatic WOW of realizing how amazing life is. The simple WOW of being alive. The inexpressible WOW of seeing what-is beyond words. I want to help the reader experience that deep awake state, and in so doing play a role in our collective awakening - making the world a more loving place for ourselves and our children.”

The Future is Ours

28 Days in Silence, Part II

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do. —Eleanor Roosevelt

T

he role of women is one of the ongoing issues of history and still is grabbing headlines as we approach the upcoming presidential election. It is true that women have been defining and re-defining themselves individually and collectively for some time. In this country, the 75-year fight for women’s right to vote led by Susan B. Anthony followed her motto, "Failure is impossible." The life and accomplishments of Eleanor Roosevelt stirred another generation of women. Today's women continue to shape their identity, changing themselves, their families and societies as they move forward. In the Families and Work Institute’s 2008 National Study of the Changing Workforce, some profound trends were reported. Let me share of few of those with you: • •

• •

Women were earning the majority of bachelors and advanced degrees. Women under 29, with and without children, were just as likely as men to want jobs with more responsibility. Women’s income level compared to men had risen to 80 percent by 2008. Men were taking more responsibility for child care, cooking and other responsibilities, still below women’s part in these tasks; but there were significant changes especially in the time spent with children under age 18. Millenial fathers and mothers (those born after 1981) were spending significantly more time with children under age 13; Generation X (1965 1980) were spending somewhat more time. Men and women’s satisfaction and conflict regarding work is related to their attitudes about home and family. Work centric men experienced more work-life conflict than men who were family centric or dual centric. Women seemed to have fewer identified work-life conflicts than men in the years immediate to 2008. Definition of gender roles changed in all four generation groups Millenials, Gen X, Boomers (1946 – 1964) and Matures (1925 - 1946 with the biggest change occurring with

the latter group. In the last century women have pushed for more rights, more education, more meaningful work and a place in the society alongside men. They have invited, perhaps even demanded, that men participate more in the tasks of children and home.

The good news is that many changes have taken place. Women have worked together to create a new definition of gender for both men and women, become a force to be reckoned with in the public arena and continue to work on the balance of personal growth, relationships and work. From Susan B. Anthony and Eleanor Roosevelt, we now have the mentoring of people like Madeline Albright, Condoleeza Rice and Hilary Clinton. A recent PBS series on Women, War and Peace highlighted the amazing and courageous stories of women around the world who have made changes under great threat to themselves and their families. Most recently, Catholic nuns have stood up to the male-dominant hierarchy who have decided the nuns are “radical feminists” and must change their thinking on a variety of theological and social issues. The Catholic laity and many others are rising up in support of women who helped change American education and health care. The skills we bring to our relationships, our communities and the workplace reflect the concerns we have for dialogue, harmony, the honest flow of emotions and our unrelenting push for equality in relationships, at work and in our communities. The results have been gratifying. There is work to do. That is the nature of life. Please take care of yourself, support each other as we change the world by "becoming the change we wish to see." ast month I posed the question: “Why would anyone in our culture that places such great value on “being productive” take 28 days of their life to intentionally “do” nothing?” It’s a great question and one that I asked myself many times before making the decision to attend a month-long silent retreat at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center spiritrock.org . Attending a silent retreat is more of a decision based on an inner calling than an outer achievement. In Part One I wrote of my catalysts to begin sitting in the Silence with others twelve years ago. Firstly, it was a broken heart; and secondly, I was willing to do whatever it took to regain my sense of self-awareness. I often joked at this time in my life, “If I’d been hit by a bus, someone else’s life would have passed before my eyes.” I was much more aware of others needs than my own. As we know from airline travel, to survive, you must put YOUR oxygen mask on first before assisting others. So what are the Keys to Silence? 1. Be willing to embrace discomfort. I will admit, deciding to sign up for a retreat (and that is the way to do it, just sign up) rarely sounds like a “fun” thing. I have become so habituated to my creature comforts, taking them away never seems inspirational. Nevertheless, I’ve learned so much on this “road less traveled,” that my Teachers: Jesus, Buddha, Dalai Lama, Rosa Parks and many more, did not share about avoiding their own discomfort. Strangely, by facing fear, worry, doubt, boredom, being uncomfortable, etc., you find the “distractions” don’t have the power over you that you might have imagined. I heard once that fear (or any of the aforementioned) is the only thing that gets smaller as you move closer to it. 2. Be willing to be with your Breath. Have you noticed how rarely you really are right here in this current breath? We tend to live in the past or the future. Insight Meditation practice at a silent retreat, will remind you again and again to focus on the current breath. Although your mind (or ego) wants to be anywhere but in the present moment, slowly the resistance gets worn down, and one

June 2012

starts to notice all the beautiful things in the moment that were not able to be seen when living in the past or future. Paying attention to each breath forces you to “be here now” which is the only place life is happening 3. Be Willing to Appreciate the Power of Community. I would not make it through a day of Silence without a community of meditators-the power of other committed souls is essential for a silent retreat, and a healthy life in general. When one emerges from the Silence, the way to maintain an engaged practice is to regularly sit with a Sangha, a group of fellow meditators. The results: a deeper sense of peace and calm, more clarity in decision making, and a greater awareness of the intrinsic connection of all things. I truly believe that if each person on this planet would take one week a year to be Silent in retreat and experience this incredible phenomenon, we would have peace on earth. I’d be delighted to be contacted to talk with anyone considering this spiritual adventure. I hope you will give yourself this great gift. Namaste, my friends!

Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes More Success...Part II

ast month I wrote about creating success and its complexity. This month here is an “action plan” of suggestions. The keys to success listed last month: 1) Access to inner resources (desires, imagination, e x p e c ta n c y , ch o i c e s , de c i s i o n s , thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and beliefs). 2) Meaningful work. 3) Intimate relationships. 4) Self-worth and selfvalue. 5) Keeping it fun. 6) Owning your power. 7) Freedom to create. 8) Stay awake in the moment to your thoughts, feeling, and choices.

1.

Use Personal Strengths to Get Things Done – We all hold different talents and skills. Completing a project always creates a sense of achievement. Especially when the goal relies on your personal ability to get the job done-the rewards are priceless. My good friend, Julie, just finished her second book. She hired a ghostwriter. She says “My strength is in speaking, not writing.” Now she has published two books before age 40! 2. Find A Group You Believe In – Take a more active role in church, social club, or non-for-profit group. Professional groups may lift your passion for your career. Being a part of something often brings more meaning to daily routine. 3. Take Time to Share with Friends and Family – A happy life is a life well shared. 4. Reframe Old Stories – Just this week a friend refused to let go of the old story. The more I helped him find resolve, the more he held onto the old stuff like a stubborn mule. Trust me, the negative whining, blaming, and self-pity were going nowhere! It is crucial to our success to reflect on the good while striving to correct the “negative.” We tend to be blind to our own negative ego so the right friend is a big help here. 5. Find Inner Resources You DO Have Access To – My cousin is happy even though he was diagnosed as “handicapped.” He uses the inner resources he knows. One of the key ones is that he knows how much he is loved. His mom found ways to uplift him when he was young and taught him to focus on the positive. As an adult, he creates his own success. 6. Create Happy Endings Whenever Possible – Do you just love a great book or a good movie that ends on a high note? The power of endings is quite remarkable. People remember the ending. Tie loose ends and leave things on a high note, creating happy

Happiness defined is the “fulfillment of your needs.” Success defined is “using our inner resources to create the reality we want.” Find something that helps you feel appreciation and gratitude— everyday! endings in your life whenever possible. And if one of your stories was “unhappy” take time to literally "rewrite" the story until you can focus on the positive. If you want some personal examples, please email me and I’ll share with you. 7. Savor the Natural Joy of Simple Pleasures – Simple pleasures abound and they are free! A walk in nature, a long talk with friend, a lipsmacking favorite food or recipe or watching the sunset…all are delicious simple pleasures. Take that moment to pause and watch the sunlight reflect off the water or hold the hand of someone you love. Happiness defined is the “fulfillment of your needs.” Success defined is “using our inner resources to create the reality we want.” Find something that helps you feel appreciation and gratitude— everyday!

Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Energy Medicine: Could This be Your Missing Link in Healing?

E

nergy healing has been in world cultures for the duration of time. When I think of energy medicine I think of several modalities: Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Healing Touch, Reiki and Prayer. Many authors have written on these subjects and include experts such as Caroline Myss, Norm Shealy, M.D., Christiane Northrup, M.D., Larry Dossey, M.D., Andrew Weil, M.D., Deepak Chopra, M.D., etc. As Caroline Myss states in her book Defy Gravity, “ We as a society have not fully animated the body-mind-spirit trinity that is the foundation of holistic health, for a simple reason: we are still enamored by the more familiar power of the mind and intimidated by the less familiar, the mystical and transformational regions of the soul.” As a holistic physician, my goal for each patient is to have a balance of mind, body and spirit. I have to admit that I start out with the physical body and assess nutrition, hormone balance, sleep and exercise, etc. When change in diet, nutritional supplements and hormone balancing do not achieve results, stress management and emotional well-being

are addressed. I strongly believe in Biofeedback breathing, meditation, massage therapy and yoga, to name a few modalities to address the mind-body-spirit connection. Sometimes, healing requires far more than just using our intellectual and emotional resources. Healing is by definition, taking a process of disintegration of life and transforming it into a process of a return to life. I can cure a strep throat with antibiotics or eliminate irritable bowel symptoms with diet and supplements, yet to get to a true healing of the entire person, it takes a more spiritual process and is different for each individual. I believe in the power of prayer and believe that God guides me in my medical practice and works through me. Through my 30-year career, I continue to see miracles occur and see other people not get well with equal amazement. Because I believe in the healing power of prayer and I also believe in Reiki as a healing modality, I would like to present a recent patient story treated by Alice Brink, Reiki master, at my office. A patient we will call “Judy” is on a journey with cancer that has progressed into a more advanced stage. When she began

Reiki treatment, she had a high level of anxiety about the cancer and choosing what treatment options would be best for her. With regular sessions, she had a more positive outlook, improved energy level and less anxiety about the entire situation. “Judy” recently needed to have a surgical procedure for her cancer treatment. She received two hours of distance Reiki during her surgery. She called 3 hours after the surgery in high spirits and reporting that the doctor said that everything went surprising well even though more extensive surgery than anticipated was needed. Notably, no blood transfusion was necessary for this major surgery. This patient has continued in a positive state of mind, has taken minimal pain medication, and plans to include Reiki in her treatment plan with her conventional chemotherapy. The difference after a Reiki session that patients commonly report, is multifaceted. It usually involves a greater sense of ease and confidence about the situation. Patients routinely report less pain, bleeding, time in recovery, ill effects from anesthesia, infection and a greater sense of peace about their health. The Reiki healing energy can provide

strong support to other treatment, sometimes making it more effective and less emotionally stressful. Since Reiki works on the Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual body, it helps to pull all these aspects together to work for the patient’s highest good. Patients regularly report feeling “connected” after a session. While sometimes dramatic in nature, the effects are often more subtle, yet can have a profound effect on the healing process. he joy of seeing someone's dream come true piece by piece is a good feeling. From the first meetup, where we played a game of handing our cash donations to each other to create a flow of abundance, to the last carefully laid tile on the restaurant's wall, many baby steps and big steps were made before the arrival of Cafe Gratitude to Kansas City. The new restaurant is located at 333 Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, MO. Owners Mike and Natalie George have done a wonderful job of including the community in their vision and offering customers healthy vegan and vegetarian meals. How many restaurants throw a preopening party for their patrons with live music, wine and food samples? The place was packed inside and out, people hugging and saying hello like old friends. Matthew Engelhart, the California based Cafe Gratitude owner, came to celebrate with the MakePeace band who toured with Jason Mraz. (Jason had promised to sing at the

F

party but that was during his pre-fame status). When visiting Cafe Gratitude I was greeted with happy smiles and asked the question of the day, "What is your life for?" The waitress left me to think of an answer while she returned with water and a menu where everything is prefixed with the words “I Am.” So many choices: I Am Humble, I Am Transformed; but I decided to try I Am Nourished, a live sandwich with almond pate, seasonal vegetables, avocado and mustard sauce on live curry bread with a side salad. The bread looked like a giant cracker but was soft and flavorful. My friends and I shared the turtle cheesecake made with raw cashews, simply deli-

cious on a plate with the question, "What are you grateful for?" Our waitress returned to refill our glasses and asked if we were ready to answer the question of the day…"What is your life for?" At the same moment, I overheard the people next to our table say it was their son's 18th birthday. We broke out in song and sang Happy Birthday to him and by then I had an answer for the question of the day. Life is to be more love! Spread the word, there's a new restaurant in town and they're spreading the love. I Am... going again!

or all of us who live in the Kansas City area, June is when our gardens really get going. It’s also the perfect time to transition to the outdoor kitchen for something colorful, fresh, and good for you—fruits and vegetables. In their book, The Gardener and the Grill (Running Press, 2012), Kansas City authors Karen Adler and Judith Fertig figured out a way to grill just about any garden goodie, from asparagus to strawberries, apples to sugar snap peas—even edamame. They maintain that vegetables and fruits retain their color and flavor much better when cooked on the grill. Grilled veggies and fruits taste wonderful—even the next day. And they’re easy to prepare. For vegetables, a simple brush of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt are all you need, according to The Gardener and the Grill. Fruits can be directly grilled or planked, grilled on garden skewers (like branches of rosemary or lavender), or served with grilled pound cake slices. Grilling gives even familiar foods a new and exciting makeover—and your backyard barbecue a colorful edge—the authors write. The Gardener and the Grill offers new ways to enjoy garden favorites throughout the year with recipes such as Rainbow Carrots with Cilantro Chile Drizzle, Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto, Grilled Corn-in-the-Husk with Ancho Lime Butter, and Acorn Squash and Apple Rings with Cider Jus. If you’re trying to eat Mediterranean-style, low carb, vegetarian or vegan—at least once in a while— The Gardener and the Grill could be your trusted barbecue guide. The Gardener and the Grill is available locally at Pryde’s, Smoke ‘n’ Fire, A Thyme for Everything, and at bookstores, Williams-Sonoma, Anthropologie, Lowe’s and amazon.com nationwide.

It’s About Individuality

n 1955, Andre Bollier left Switzerland with his young family to pursue the American dream…a business of his own. He brought with him a devotion to the finest quality products and authentic flavors of his homeland. Three generations and 57 years later, Andre’s Confiserie Suisse has maintained both this devotion and quality. Today Andre’s is recognized in “The Book of Bests” as the “Best Domestic Boxed Chocolate.” The Croute au Fromage featured in this article is the Swiss version of the American toasted cheese sandwich. Executive Chef, Rene Bollier, imports Emmanthal & Gruere cheeses and seasons them with Kirsch (Cherry Brandy) and Maggie (Swiss soy sauce) to preserve the flavors brought to this country by his Grandfather Andre.

Bonnie Rabicoff is the producer and host of the multimedia foodie series “In the Kitchen with Bonnie.” She has served as the Vice President of Development for KCPT Public Television and the Marketing Director of The Barstow School where she founded and coordinated “The Barstow School Organic Farmers’ Market and Chef Series. Bonnie has worked in the television medium for over 20 years…Serving as a producer and host for a variety of community programs addressing education, the arts, social service and cooking. ast month, I offered a different point of view of T. Colin Campbell’s China Study, which has been used a lot lately to scientifically justify the health benefits of vegan diet. Not so fast! A key reason it is so difficult to study the impact of food and nutrients on health is that we are biochemically individual. Roger Williams, PhD, coined the term “biochemical individuality” in 1956 in a now classic book by the same name. He concluded not only are we distinct in our gross physical form, but also in the shape, size and function of our internal organs down to level of cellular metabolism. Thus we are each metabolically unique, with genetically determined and highly individualized nutritional requirements. Disease results when these requirements are not met. Williams further concludes that inadequate or imbalanced nutrition is the primary cause of disease. Recent research shows that the conditions during pregnancy, including nutrition, play a key role in determining our physical and metabolic uniqueness, as well as our tendencies toward specific diseases. Given this, it’s no wonder that diet and nutrition can seem so confusing. Biochemical individuality explains why diet and nutrition studies often fail to conclude anything or even show harm. At most, dietary recommendations determined by the average are a starting point. It also explains why diet plans work for some, and not for others. So then what? We each need to listen to our bodies and conduct our own trial. The right food lends consistent energy, a clear sharp mind, even mood, yet with an appetite for meals. My Simple Eating Rule is a place to begin: six servings of vegetables and enough protein to feel steady, strong and focused. I recommend leafy green vegetables, and low starch vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber and celery. Many people feel good

Croute au Fromage, House-Made Tomato Soup and a Spinach Salad with Andre’s Signature Dressing Signature Dish of Executive Chef & Owner of Andre’s, Rene Bollier Croute au Fromage Ingredients: 1 lb. Emmanthal Cheese .50 lb. Gruyere Cheese 3 each Eggs Large 3 tbsp Whipping Cream 3 tbsp Dry White Wine 1 tsp Salt Kosher ½ tbsp Pepper Fresh Ground ½ tbsp Maggie (Soy Sauce) 1 tbsp Kirsch (Cherry Brandy) Directions: Grate cheese into a large mixing bowl. Mix all other ingredients in a separate bowl and then add to the cheese. Mix the cheese and liquid by hand until all ingredients are incorporated and the cheese is slightly moist. Cut French bread into ½ inch slices and top with the cheese mixture. Make sure the bread is totally covered to insure it does not burn. Refrigerate for at least ½ hour. Broil on med high heat (about 5 or 6 inches from heat source) in oven until cheese is golden brown. House-Made Tomato Soup Ingredients: 1 tbsp Butter ½ cup Carrot Chopped ¼ cup Onion Chopped 4-5 cloves Garlic Chopped 2 tbsp All Purpose Flour 2 cups Low Sodium Chicken Stock 4 cups Tomatoes Peeled (Canned or Fresh) Kosher Salt Pepper, Fresh Ground ¼ cup Whipping Cream (optional)

Add flour and mix for an additional minute. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes and a dash of pepper and salt. Let the soup simmer for 20 to 30 minutes on a med low heat. With an emersion blender or food processor puree soup until smooth and creamy. Add the cream and taste for any adjustments needed to the seasoning. eating this way, at least for a while. Some need a bit of starchy vegetable, such as carrot, yam, celery root or winter squash and a few need to add some whole grains and potato to feel good. A weighed down stuffed feeling with little appetite can be a signal to lower the amount of protein food. Not feeling full means more fat is needed. Cravings for protein are often signaling a need for more fat. The most healthful fats come from whole food sources such as grass-fed animal flesh, wild and responsibly farmed fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, nut and seed butters, olives, avocados and coconut. The right amount and combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrate — ranging from green vegetables to starchy vegetables to whole grains — can make a big difference in your over all health and wellbeing. If you find your right diet in a book, you are one of the lucky ones. The rest of us will need to experiment and fine tune until we get it right. Of course, seek the help of a qualified practitioner if you still have difficulty. Food is our foundation, but much more can be done to help you feel your best. Eating Well in Kansas City Feature Article—by Teresa Kelly Getting Good Food Growing in Every Neighborhood

T

he Get Growing KC Campaign is a two year collaborative effort between Cultivate Kansas City, Kansas City Community Gardens and Lincoln University Extension. The nine members of the Get Growing KC Team hit the streets last August with the mission of getting good food growing in every neighborhood. The team builds capacity in the Kansas City are to fill the ever increasing need for support by people who want to grow food in their backyards, cultivate community gardens, start urban farms or develop food projects. The team members represent a wide range of skill sets from profession chef to urban farmer, and farm business entrepenuer to fruit and vegetable growers. Literally the team can take a food production project from seed to plate. Since its inception last July, the Team has had wide exposure in all parts of the Kansas City area. You may have seen them at events like Food Now, Food Day, Troost Fest 2012, Breaking the Silence Environmental Conference, Meet me at the Bridge Celebration, the two KC Food Circle Eat Local, Eat Organic Farm Expos, and the Prairie Village Earth Fair. At the American Heart Association’s Kansas City Most Powerful Voices Gospel Celebration and Health Fair, chef and team member Sharon Goldstein shared a simple and flavorful way to prepare collards. Hit of the Health Fair, the Get Growing KC table was crowded with young and old alike tasting collards made in a new way. The link between health and good food is becoming more common in the mainstream conventional health care systems. The Get Growing Team spent winter and early spring sharing their mission and programs with neighborhood associations including Livable Neighborhoods, the KCK Northland Neighborhood Inc. and Leavenworth Road Association. Many presentations lead to new opportunities. The Leavenworth Road Association talk evolved into technical assistance for the Grinter Place Farmers Market at the Grinter Historical site in western Wyandotte County as well as the development of an orchard at the site. The Team is excited about the burgeoning edible landscape and urban orchard movement putting food literally in your backyard. Presentations at networking meetings like Community Together and the Green Impact Zone and regional conferences such as the Veteran Farmers Conference at Johnson County Community College and the annual Great Plains Growers conference in St. Joseph, MO has expanded local awareness of the Get Growing KC Campaign. Team members Bobby Wright and Sharon Goldstein go to Harvesters once a month presenting Get Growing programming to new participants of the food bank network. Several collaborative efforts are in the works to increase availability and distribution of food in KCMO neighborhoods. One such project partners a church, urban farm and after school day care providing food to the families. Inspired by the proven adage that kids eat what they grow, the after school children visit the garden and learn about the vegetables’ journey to their dinner table. In spring of 2012, team member Sherri Harvel developed the Get Growing for Market Series to help new and experienced growers develop a successful business selling produce at Farmers Markets. Urban farmers from newbie to accomplished attended the classes. The interactive classes invite participation with hands on learning and role play. Classes are offered as a six class series and as stand-alone components. Sherri and Teresa Kelly presented the new class series to an enthusiastic and attentive group of 10 growers at

Mattie Rhodes NE location. Two of the participants returned to sell at La Chalupa Farmers Market with new ideas and motivation for growing their businesses and supplying fresh produce in the neighborhood. The duo also presented the Post-Harvest Handling and Marketing modules to 11 of the Rosedale Development’s Community Garden growers. Two rounds of mini grants have been awarded providing seed money to 17 projects in the Kansas City area. Karen Fresh Garden, Lay Htoo, owner and founder is starting the first Burmese Karen (pronounced Kah-rehn) vegetable farm in the metro area. She is building infrastructure for her urban farm business. She has tilled under the entire back lawn at her new home to make way for productive crops she will grow and sell at Farmer’s Market. Two projects have an emphasis on youth participation and education in their gardens. Whatsoever Community Center is expanding their community garden and youth education program. The youth see good food from seed to plate. Their fresh fruit and vegetable harvest enhances the 16,000 meals served per year. Youth learn to appreciate the flavors and variety that comes from the garden. Niles Home for Children also focuses on youth education using growing food as the lens for developing self esteem, entrepreneurship and leadership skill while providing food to the community. By improving infrastructure a substantial increase in production is expected from three grantees. St Mary Magdalene Community Garden in expects to increase their garden yields by 500-1000 1,000 pounds, Stony Crest Urban farm, in the Marlborough neighborhood of Kansas City, MO will produce a more reliable yield supporting wholesale pricing for a food project packaging fresh vegetables as fast food snacks at 5 locations in their neighborhood, and Stillwell Baptist Church, in south Johnson County expects increase yield in their Harvest for the Hungry garden supplying more food for distribution through their Caring Ministries Food Pantry. These projects are successfully providing food for people who have day to day challenges accessing locally grown produce. The Get Growing Team continually plays matchmaker for individuals, organizations, neighborhood leaders, businesses, faith-based communities sowing seeds for long term fruitful relationships supporting sustainable projects. Recently a neighborhood leader commented, “I like that you have come here and listened to our story and what we want to do. You did not come in with a plan already mapped out to fix our situation.” Personal, one to one conversations have encouraged participation and collaboration in the community with a common goal… getting good food in every neighborhood. Teresa Kelly is enjoys doing her life work as activist and artist. She loves helping others grow food, facilitating projects, writing and taking care of her backyard hens. She works for Cultivate Kansas City on the Get Growing KC team and is co-founder of My City Hens, formerly City Hens in Roeland Park. L

et us claim victory over the apathy (it’s not my problem…someone else will do it) that settles in when we sit in front of the television (a major place to claim apathy over the overwhelming needs and crises in our world, both local and global). As a female business owner I have learned a great deal over the years; and, I've met many amazing, generous and caring people. Individuals welcomed me as a naturopathic doctor, embraced and celebrated the services that I offer; and I feel well received as a prodigal daughter since returning to Kansas City. Let me share some exciting news. In July, I will graduate from a prestigious fellowship with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This experience has had a profound impact on the way I view my presence and responsibility in my local community. There are twenty-eight other people representing the non-profit sector in the greater Kansas City area who are my colleagues in this experience. We spent sixteen months in a fellowship program with a focus on collaboration, team building, communicating across cultures and lending one’s skills and abilities toward making Kansas City the best place to live and flourish. I also learned to identify and understand the social determinants of health, wellness and wellbeing. As an individual, a female business owner, and a responsible citizen, I have been challenged to overcome assumptions in order to expand and reshape my ideas of community. As we all navigate a challenging economy and job market, it has been easy to see boundaries (both perceived and actual) disappear and also to recognize how shared challenges are great equalizers. I am inspired as I watch and engage with Kansas City communities in lending a hand and choosing to make a positive difference. My chest swells with pride when I hear how a family or individual facing a challenge has been served by the community, either through a social service agency, church community or by an individual. Kansas City – YOU ROCK! My field is health care; specifically naturopathic medicine (www.myvillagemedicine.com). People who work in the health care profession almost always have plenty of opportunities to volunteer and give back through their work associations. What does it look like when we step outside the proverbial box, to lend a hand--to make a difference? Let me tell you a story: On Christmas day in 1999, I spent the day standing in the back of a semi-truck handing packages, tricycles, and bicycles to grown men dressed as elves, so they could knock on doors and hand out these items to children and families living in the barrios of Phoenix, Arizona. The warm fuzzy feelings from that experience were amazing! Of course, I could hardly wait for the next Christmas! I was new to Phoenix and was spending Christmas day with a friend who

Our own back yards and the back yards (aka communities) of others are waiting and ready. had participated in this giving process through her church. I didn’t know anyone, and it didn't matter. We were on a mission to serve, and to bring smiles to children’s faces. The day was a success and thirteen years later it is still a treasured memory. I share this story to say that while organizations committed to community service are able to make a big difference, I also know that it is individuals like you, me, the local school teacher, the hair stylist, massage therapist, counselor, the government employee, the high tech employee, the unemployed person, the list goes on…together we can be a powerful force for the Golden Rule! Our own back yards and the back yards (aka communities) of others are waiting and ready. Bring produce from your garden to support a local food pantry. Sell half of the loot/treasure/goodies (i.e. the content of other people’s attic and garage). Surprise your garage sale shoppers and give away the other half. Yes, go for the look of surprise, confirming that you have just committed a random act of kindness. Conscious giving of time, talent and resources is easy and can become habit forming. I am not suggesting anyone (myself included) add another “to do” on the already long list. This creates stress. I am talking about simple SHARING, maybe outside of one’s normal circle and in unexpected circumstances.

ay the footprints we leave behind show that we’ve walked in kindness toward the earth and every living thing. -Inspired by American Indian Philosophy The forces of our natural evolution, instinct and survival depend on us building and sustaining communities and the relationships within them. Our ability to sustain life on this planet is enhanced as we work together and strive to live in peace and harmony. Each one of us is being called to participate in the mystery we call life. Your being here on this planet at this time has meaning, significance and value. There is no one else quite like you. By sharing your unique purpose, talents, skills and wisdom within the communities to which you belong, your contribution impacts many generations to come. Thank you for being here. One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade. -Chinese proverb Our ancestors left behind blueprints on how to contribute and make a difference in the communities to which they belonged. They did this by innovating, documenting, teaching and sharing survival skills, traditions, heritage, stories, culture, ceremonies, beliefs, standards, visions, technology, wisdom, assets etc. We have inherited a strong foundation to support us in enhancing systems, structures and foundations that support human existence and the co-existence of plants and ani-

mals. When we pay it forward and take personal responsibility to contribute our unique gifts, talents, wisdom and resources to the collective, we honor our ancestors and leave our unique footprint on the planet. Living life with the intention and purpose to leave this world a better place than the one we woke up in is the ultimate expression of love for all living things. The quality of our lives and of future generations is dependent on how open and willing we are to become students of life and servants to the communities to which we belong. As we learn to adapt to the ongoing change and transformation inside and outside of us, we are better equipped to take care of ourselves and one another. By enhancing our capacity to learn and develop additional emotional and intellectual intelligence as well as survival, communication and relationship skills, we grow, heal and deepen the relationship with ourselves and others. The experience of being on this journey is wholeness and oneness. As we adopt and practice a mindset and intention of oneness, good will and legacy, we are more inclined to experience acceptance, compassion, forgiveness, nurturance and love for every living thing on the planet. By doing this, we make a huge difference in diminishing and eliminating the internal and external suffering, chaos, dis-ease and clutter known to man today. Step by step, we become the people we

Our ancestors left behind blueprints on how to contribute and make a difference in the communities to which they belonged. were meant to be. I accept relationship as my primary teacher about myself, other people, and the mysteries of the universe. -Gay Hendricks Human beings are social beings. We are drawn to be with each other. The desire for love, acceptance, connection and belonging is inherent. Instinctively we search for and yearn to experience love, acceptance, connection and belonging through our interactions with others. Our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being is dependent on how effectively we address our needs while navigating in relationships in the midst of our life situations. Relationships are our mirrors. It is through our interactions with others that we begin to see ourselves in them

and experience more of our own wholeness and magnificence. This illumination contributes to our capacity to evolve to the highest expression of ourselves. The more we learn, grow and heal, the better equipped we are to serve and make a difference in the communities in which we live, play, worship and work. All of this impacts our wellbeing and the well-being of future generations. The better we know ourselves, the better equipped we will be to take care of ourselves and each other. First, we are challenged to rise above the narrow confines of our individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. -Martin Luther King, Jr. What causes someone to risk their life for another or give without knowing the beneficiary, if not a force inside and outside of ourselves that calls upon us to protect humanity from extinction? At some deep level our internal wisdom knows that without each other, our species is in danger of becoming extinct. Directly or indirectly, all of our thoughts, words and actions impact our capacity to protect ourselves and future generations. Think of the toll of lives and loss with Hurricane Katrina. Most of the world experienced compassion for those that were affected or in the direct path of the destruction. Walls of separation and differences came down, even if only briefly, in many cases. We witnessed a multitude of resources poured out to the people that were affected and countless expressions of love, support and compassion in motion. At some level, the realization that we belonged to yet another community larger than our immediate concerns was brought

The better we know ourselves, the better equipped we will be to take care of ourselves and each other.

forth. That event was a basic, human call to action. Everyday there are countless situations, events and relationships calling for your attention. You get to choose how, when and where you will respond. Where are you being called to act, contribute, serve, heal or grow? Each of us has a responsibility to build, foster and sustain the relationships within our communities so that all might be served and saved. Give thanks for all that has been handed down to you and for you. What will be your footprint in your lifetime and in future generations?

June 2012

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels June 2012 Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Happy birthday Gemini! Jupiter, the planet of abundance, happiness and new opportunities is entering your sign for a 12-month stay! You might be starting a new job, relationship, or hobby. You could make exciting changes to your appearance. These shifts symbolize an expansion of consciousness, so nothing is insignificant at this time. Also, start (or continue!) a meditation practice. You’ll connect with your intuition very easily and get lots of guidance. Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

It’s important for you to not feel alone. You are always connected with the Universe! Ask for guidance in your dreams, and in your meditations. You’ll feel like you are embraced by the Divine Mother, or part of a loving spiritual family. Let go of critical, judgmental people who make you feel isolated and hurt. You deserve to feel loved and appreciated!

Meditation and spiritual seeking brings lots of exciting results! You’ll feel connected on a deep level, which is so important for Libra. You’re always in a partnership with spiritual energy, but sometimes you feel it stronger, like now! You’ll also have insights into problems about health or diet (like discovering a food allergy) – taking action will give breakthroughs! It’s a great time to start yoga or Tai Chi. You’ll also have opportunities for travel that will be fun, and will also open your heart in new ways.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Examine your goals and see what changes you can make to be even happier. Seek out friends on a spiritual path who walk their talk. Meditate on material possessions and money habits. For Leos, sometimes acquiring “fancy stuff” can be used to fill in spiritual emptiness. It’s great to love fine things and treat yourself well, but balance it with the same regal regard for your soul!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Wow! You’re entering a year of amazing career success! You can get a promotion, a new job, or go back to school for a brand new direction. You’ll be brimming over with confidence, whatever happens! You’re going to ask more out of relationships. You’ll need partners to meet higher spiritual, ethical and emotional standards. You’re also done taking care of others, so they’ll need their own inner strength!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Jupiter is the planet of abundance, openness and spirituality. This month it’s helping you rebuild and increase your ability to trust and bond. You’ll be able to overcome long term blocks to intimacy. You could also receive surprising amounts of money that help you with debt, or you’ll be able to fulfill a dream that seemed out of reach. Be open and let the Universe flow through you and wash your heart clean!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) You could be starting an amazing new relationship! It’s important to connect with people who are on a spiritual path, or who blend with your ethics. You’re drawing a true partnership on every level! Meditate to forgive and release any family

issues that become “baggage” when you’re bonded. Then you can see your partner more clearly. If already linked, you’ll have a renaissance in your bond that will renew your love!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) You work so hard, you can nearly run yourself into the ground! Use your meditation time to truly listen to your body. Fatigue means you need rest, not that you’re a lazy loser! Honor and respect your body by enjoying healthy food, adequate sleep and breaks, massages, yoga classes, laughter. You’ll get more done when you’re “tuned up” in this way. Ask your spouse or a good friend to make sure you’re being gentle with yourself.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Jupiter is the planet of playfulness, joy, abundance and travel. It’s going to bring you lots of fun over this month, and even through the next 12 months! Relationships that begin now will be easy and feel like you’ve known each other before. If partnered, you’ll feel a renewed sense of enjoyment and passion together. It’s a great time to get a pet, or spend time with pets. And if you want to have a baby, there’s no better time than now!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Life is getting very fun and exciting! Please enjoy yourself, yet also stick with your meditation practice. You need to remain centered in order to keep the good times going! Your intuition wants to guide you so you don’t waste energy on dead-end projects or relationships. Also, your soul knows there are even greater levels of good in store for you. Don’t stay stuck at this rung of the ladder when there’s even more to open up to.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ll have a major boost in finances! Maybe you’re finally realizing your own inner worth, and that is being mirrored “in real life” by your outer worth increasing. Make sure you are surrounding yourself with people who truly appreciate you. Get rid of those who take advantage of your gentle spirit, or those who drain you! Make your life “richer” by being with “spiritual wealthy” friends.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Meditation will help you release negative self-esteem, fears, and obsessions that keep you from enjoying life and from seeing how wonderful you are! No matter how longstanding your “issues”, they can be healed with persistent spiritual energy and forgiveness. Be kind to yourself by cleaning your home and office. Toss out old junk! Keep stuff neat! You’ll feel more self worth. Also, if you need to move, or buy a home, this is a great time for it!
