Dear Friend,

Contents

The music envelopes me and I have a vision of a child. Without warning, I am imbued with feelings of pure love for this child. Almost like a drug, it fills me with euphoria and causes me to wake from the hypnogogic state I reached while listening to the sound meditation. I feel enveloped by this love and immediately crave more. This experience occurred about a month ago and I haven’t felt that same intense emotion since. Yet, the memory of that indescribable intensity permeates me...the purity of LOVE, stays with me. I remember years ago, during a healing session, I was told to look in the mirror, place my hand on my heart, and repeat, “I love myself.” It was awkward at first, almost silly. I repeated the process through the years, though, and have felt a semblance of self-love from it. Because, at least for me, self-love can be tough. It’s easy to love a child, a parent, a lover, a dear friend—and to see the true beauty of that soul—but not always as easy to be gentle with ourselves and shine that love within. I realize now that the child in my vision is myself and that I experienced the feeling of God’s love for me, the child. Somehow I know, though, that what I felt was self-love—a glimpse at the intensity of love that is available if we start with loving ourselves.

Kansas City Author Releases “Redemption from Biblical Battering” A veteran educator and counselor has revealed a way for church women who are being abused to escape without abandoning their faith. According to one recent article in Christianity Today (May 11, 2018), an estimated 25 percent of Christian women stay longer in abusive relationships while they struggle with issues like God’s will, forgiveness, or desires to help their abuser. Redemption from Biblical Battering by Shirley Fessel, MA, MEd, can help resolve that struggle. The reader can select from any part of the workbook that resonates with her. Then it moves recovery forward by presenting the syndrome in a

clear, understandable way and equipping the reader with skills and resources. The workbook features seven levels the reader can use to clarify her confusion. It offers five tools that she can use in her relationships and beyond in building a functional life. Testimonies from women of faith help her understand she is not alone. The reader benefits from 20 years of education, counseling, and research into abuse in the name of God and how faith communities respond. Professionals and some faith leaders are often uncomfortable or reluctant to broach the role of belief in their clients’ accepting abuse. Family and friends may care, but not understand the complexity of manipulative tactics. The self-help workbook presents a “new paradigm for moving recovery forward, useful to professional and client alike” according to a local marriage and family therapist, Leon Probasco, Board Diplomate. EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM

He recommends the author’s advanced approach which combines clear concepts and methods to free a woman from abuse underwritten by appeals to religious concepts. “Your Path to Faith-Based Freedom” is the apt subtitle for this workbook, in his view. Added or unique features include a realistic view of challenges after leaving abuse, continued aftercare resources, and a believing woman’s Bill of Rights. One reader wrote, “ It is difficult to find a delicate and insightful workbook like this. The careful questions and context aid in working through, and finally emotionally escaping, trauma brought on by patriarchal excess in our culture, churches, and homes. This is a very user- friendly workbook.” Others not wrestling with faith questions have said the book still provides “aha” and “that’s me” moments, helping to validate some of their experiences. An extensive list of materials and groups is included for further information. https://authorcentral.amazon.com/gp/profile Author, Shirley Fessel, will offer a presentation and book signing at Aquarius Books on February 24 from 2-4 p.m.

Journey to Wholeness

Breaking the Patterns of Depression BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.

P

erhaps you’ve dreamed of a life without problems, carefree and happy, nothing but ‘blue skies.’ However, life brings with it all the opposites; suffering and joy, clarity and chaos, anger and peace. In today’s society, where expectations for happiness are high and patience is limited, depression has a wonderful breeding ground. Current research tells us that seventy percent of Major Depressive Disorder can be attributed to the environment and about thirty percent can be linked to genetic heritage. This can vary dramatically from individual to individual. The good news is that many of the people suffering from different forms of depression can be greatly helped by changing their habits of thinking and acting. One pattern is the ‘Chicken Little’ approach to living. Walking through the forest an acorn falls on his head. He is alarmed and begins shouting, “The sky is falling. The sky is falling.” Before long, all the creatures of the forest are upset. Then it is discovered that it was only the acorn of an industrious squirrel dropped accidentally from the tree. Think about your responses to everyday events. Were there any times when something small happened and you immediately jumped to a conclusion that evoked fear and apprehension. For example you call a friend several times and leave a message. When the call is not immediately returned, you begin imagining catastrophic scenarios. Are they sick, angry with you, skipped town, or don’t’ like you? Living in the here-and-now is a powerful antidote for catastrophizing and futurizing. If Chicken Little had stayed focused in the moment, he would have looked at what fell on his head and said, “Oh, an acorn must have

Heart Health: Protect Your Heart BY NANCY RUSSELL, M.D.

M

ore than eighty-one million Americans, roughly one in three people, have cardiovascular disease. This includes heart disease and hardening of the arteries leading to heart attacks, strokes and loss of limb. Cardiovascular disease accounts for 36 percent of all deaths, many of which are preventable. While there are several causes, the good news is that some can be controlled or treated naturally.

Diet and Nutrition Poor diet and nutritional deficiencies are significant factors. A diet low in fiber and high in sugar and refined grains and bad fats can harm the heart and blood vessels by causing inflammation, which leads to hardening of the arteries and endothelial dysfunction. Even though many people eat too much, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition points out that less than 5 percent of people in their study consumed the government’s Recommended Daily Allowance for key minerals essential to health. Nutritional deficiencies—especially magnesium, vitamins A, C, D, and the B vitamins, folic acid, in particular—can harm the heart. Vitamin D is especially critical in lowering the risk of heart disease, and it also supports your bones and immune system. Even if you’ve already been diagnosed with heart disease or have had a heart attack or stroke, diet and/or supplements can improve heart function.

High Blood Pressure High blood pressure sometimes requires treatment with medications while you work to lower it naturally. Weight management is an important aspect of blood pressure. Italian researchers found that 50 percent of overweight people who dropped pounds normalized their blood pressure. Exercise is also helpful. Most people who are successful at exercising regularly are walkers,

“Many people can safely lower cholesterol naturally and without medication. Nutritional treatments include oatmeal, garlic (three cloves per day), and a handful of tree nuts such as almonds and macadamias daily.” and a recent study showed that just a ten-minute walk can lower systolic blood pressure by three points. Walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week meets the official recommendations for physical activity needed to prevent high blood pressure and other health problems. Helpful supplements for high blood pressure include Coenzyme Q10, potassium, and an ounce of dark chocolate per day. The potassium in just one banana, one cup of coconut water, tomato or V -8 juice can normalize blood pressure. If you find that your blood pressure is still high even with regular exercise, healthy eating and reduced stress, ask your doctor to rule out sleep apnea. If your pulse or body temperature rise after eating, you might have food allergies or sensitivities that can be addressed with an elimination diet or other treatment. Testosterone deficiency in men can be an underlying cause that needs to be evaluated.

High Cholesterol Lowering cholesterol frequently gets the most attention as the way to prevent cardiovascular disease. Still, according to some authorities, moderately high cholesterol is not necessarily the most important or even a significant risk for cardiovascular disease. Rather, research shows that other factors, including those discussed here, are more important in reducing the risk of heart attack. These include exercising regularly , treating diabetes, stopping smoking, and optimizing thyroid function. In fact, lowering cholesterol too much may be unhealthy, because cholesterol serves critical functions in the body—it’s essential for the manufacture of key hormones, such as cortisol, DHEA, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. It’s true that widely used cholesterol lowing medications can save lives for those who have already had a heart attack or who have angina. But those who have never had a heart attack may experience little benefit. Many people can safely lower cholesterol naturally and without medication. Nutritional

treatments include oatmeal, garlic (three cloves per day), and a handful of tree nuts such as almonds and macadamias daily. Niacin (vitamin B-3) can effectively lower cholesterol, and the flush type is much more effective than its non-flush counterpart. Doses of 5001,500mg per day can be safe but use with caution and under the care of a physician who can monitor blood sugar and liver functions. Herbal treatments include red yeast rice, berberine, artichoke, plant sterols, and policosanol. Because high triglycerides can raise your risk of heart disease, avoid sugar and bad fats and take 2,000mg of omega-3 fish oil with at least 1,000mg of DHA per day.

Poor Sleep and High Stress Poor sleep and high stress are powerful factors that can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Research shows that regularly sleeping less than 7 to 8 hours can double the risk of heart attack and stroke, and this risk is compounded for those with untreated sleep apnea. Just as important, happiness deficiency and high stress, especially when underlying anger issues are present, increase risk. It is imperative to deal with the stress in your life. Find a healthy way to regularly blow off steam . Seek a psychologist or counselor who can help you talk through and sort out these issues. Take care and be gentle with yourself.

Beauty and the Beet With this mighty root vegetable, it’s okay to get caught red-handed BY MARY T. NGUYEN

T

here are two types of beet lovers out there: Those who love them and those who haven't yet figured out they they do. I forgive the latter group for their reticence or even confusion about their feelings. Beets aren't the easiest vegetable to love. They're not like those other vegetables that don't stain your hands or come in gnarly shapes and sizes. The greens can be unruly and the stalks a fibrous chore to chop. Its earthy flavor is strong and, to its opponents, distasteful. But all those negatives come with so many more positives if you're willing to look a little deeper. That red stain? It's packed with minerals and nutrients that can provide energy, maintain healthy blood pressure and act as an antiinflammatory. It's also a great natural dye and food coloring! It also makes for a great juice! If you don't want your hands or clothes stained, gloves and an apron should help. All of those nutrients come from an exchange of the earth in which it was grown. That means that the more local and organic your beet, the more healthful properties it comes with. So perhaps you can forgive that earthy flavor for all of the super chemicals it's putting your body when you eat it. And so there are countless ways to eat beets: raw, juiced, roasted, pickled, sauteed. The whole plant is edible and equally packed with nutrients, so there's a lot there to enjoy. I really love sauteed beet greens served with steak or eggs. The leafy greens are sweet and tender, not too dissimilar from spinach, which is related to beets in the amaranth family. Here are two of my favorite ways to serve beets, one sweet and one savory. In both the beet is key, but its flavor not prominent. They are recipes beetniks will appreciate and might actually win over some skeptics.

CHOCOLATE BEET CAKE Ingredients 1 1⁄4 cups flour, sifted 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup sugar 3 large eggs 1⁄2 cup applesauce 1⁄2 cup canola oil 1 1⁄4 beet, pureed (See note below) 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled 1⁄2 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Beet puree A 15-ounce can of beets in water, drained and pureed is 1 cup. You can make your own puree with four medium-sized beets. Peel and cut into 2-inch chunks and boil in water for about 30 minutes before pureeing in a food processor.

BEET BURGER Makes 4 burgers Ingredients: 1 1⁄4 cups cooked, cooled brown rice 1 cup cooked lentils, cooled 1 cup peeled, shredded beets 1⁄2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon ground fennel 1 teaspoon dry mustard 3 tablespoons minced onion 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 egg 1⁄2 cup fine, dry bread crumbs Olive oil

In a food processor, pulse rice, lentils and beets for about a minute or until the mixture resembles ground meat. Transfer to a mixing bowl. Add salt, pepper, thyme, fennel, mustard, onion, garlic, egg and bread crumbs. Mix with your hands to incorporate. Refrigerate until well chilled, for one to four hours. Heat a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Using 1/3 cup for each, form mixture into patties. Pour a little oil into skillet. Add patties to pan. Cook until charred on the edges and heated through, turning a few times, about 12 minutes total. (Burgers can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to three days, or frozen up to three months. Rewarm in a skillet before serving.) Serve burgers on toasted buns with condiments of choice.

Pour into prepared baking pan. Bake for 25 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan on rack. Cover and let stand overnight to improve flavor. You Can Eat Healthy While Dating—Here’s How

Eating Well in Kansas City 9

BY ANGELA WATSON ROBERTSON

W

ith Valentine’s Day around the corner, maybe you’re thinking about taking your special someone out on a romantic date, or you’re actively meeting lots of new people and going on a lot of dates these days. Regardless of your relationship status, at some point while dating (which often means eating and drinking out quite often), your health and nutrition goals may start to conflict with your social calendar. Yet, one doesn’t have to derail the other. You can eat healthy and stick to your health goals while dating. Itt just takes some planning and thoughtfulness. I remember when I was trying to eat healthy while going on 2-3 dates a week in my late 20’s and it was really difficult. On top of that, I often felt a lot of social pressure to order an alcoholic drink on every date or eat a heavy, comfort-food type meal in order to prove that I was a lot of fun and I was having a good time. Yet, in hindsight I wish I’d stayed true to my nutrition and health needs more while dating. I didn’t know then what I know now about how important nutrition is for my mental and physical health or how to creatively dine out with food sensitivities or diet restrictions. So, now I’m passing on these tips to you so that you can stick to your health goals for 2019 and enjoy a busy social or dating life.

do. That’s because we all want to impress our new friend and seem super fun, and often we wait until down the road to say, “Oh yeah, I actually am gluten-intolerant, and I’ll never want to go to Italian restaurants with you,” or “Actually, I don’t like to drink.” So, take it from me, if you’re honest right away you’ll save a lot of time and awkwardness. Most of the time and before a date, you have a few conversations with the person. Let him or her know a bit about how you live your life and be as open as possible. Ask the same of your date, and you’ll find intimacy grows a bit easier. Plus, you’ll be setting up the foundation for a relationship where you can take care of your health as a team.

Choose the location wisely. Don’t just think about where the popular places are to hang out. Also consider the type of food they serve and how open the wait staff is toward modifying the menu. Ask yourself if you’ll be able to stick to your meal plan or diet restrictions at the location. If you don’t drink, but you feel awkward not drinking if your date is—consider is there a fun, non-alcoholic drink on the menu you could order instead? If you have strict diet requirements or food allergies and sensitivities, it is your job to take care of yourself. So, do your research. When I had to avoid dairy and gluten and I was dating a lot, I had a ready set list of the select HOW TO EAT HEALTHY WHILE DATING 101 restaurants and bars in my city that served food I knew I could eat. If you’re planning to cook at home for your Valentine, here’s a simple and healthy recipe for two. I’d recommend purchasing wild caught salmon instead of farmed, and pair the meal with my favorite, organic red table wine from Trader Joe’s: Green Fin Red Table Wine. One Pan Salmon in Honey Garlic Sauce with Vegetables 1.5 lbs wild salmon fillet 1.25 lbs (4 cups) sweet potatoes, cubed 1.25 lbs (4 cups) brussel sprouts, halved 2 tbsp avocado 3 tbsp honey 2 tbsp lemon juice 3 large garlic cloves, grated 1 tsp salt Ground black pepper, to taste Chop the sweet potatoes into bite sized pieces. Cut the brussel sprouts into halves. Preheat oven to 425 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Make the honey garlic sauce. In a small bowl add honey, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper and whisk. Place salmon fillet in the middle of the baking sheet. Pour ⅓ of the honey garlic sauce over the salmon and spread with a brush. In a medium bowl, add butternut squash. Drizzle with 1 tbsp oil and 1/3 of honey garlic sauce. Mix well to coat and transfer to the baking sheet on one side of salmon fillet in a single layer. Repeat this step with brussels sprouts. Bake for 30 minutes and serve hot with a side of brown rice or quinoa. Recipe modified from: https://ifoodreal.com/onepan-salmon/

How did you feel when you read that affirmation? Self-love. Sometimes it's easier said than done. For a true health care program to work, self-love is the umbrella that determines how we treat ourselves, others and, ultimately, the earth. Louise Hay, the inspirational grandmother of self-love, has 12 great tips on beginning to love ourselves.

See every step, failure, mistake, joy, and experience as a thread in the beautiful tapestry of your life. Weave in self-love throughout because you are worthy. Now.

enuinely loving and nurturing ourselves is vital to creating healthy, balanced lives in which we thrive and BY THERESE INZERILLO flourish. When we neglect to love and care for ourselves, we are not capable of giving fully, both in our relationships and to the world. Loving ourselves means to truly care for all aspects of our being and to honor our talents and abilities, even when the world around us negates our value and tries to tell us otherwise. True self -love is listening to our own hearts and following our own truths. So, when life becomes overwhelming and you forget to care for yourself, it’s useful to stop and hit the “reset” button. One great way to do this is to create your own retreat or spa day so that you have time to release and rejuvenate. Allow yourself to slip away into the silence for a day or even just a few hours. 4 Steps to Living As Love in Every Moment

T

he unconditional love we long for is always available to us but sometimes we forget how to tap into it. Love surrounds us and infuses us at all times. And love is actually simpler to access than you might think. Every moment of waking life we experience thoughts, feelings and sensations. Sometimes we feel excited, expansive and joyful. In those moments, we don’t necessarily need to practice tapping into love because we are already living as love. Other times, we may feel sad, angry, ashamed, afraid, heavy, hot or contracted. In those instances, we attempt to avoid or shut down the discomfort. We might eat, drink, get on social media, compulsively clean, pick a fight with our lover, judge others, work long hours, stay busy or a myriad other strategies to not have to feel whatever is happening inside. Amidst the intensity of the feelings, sensations and negative thoughts swirling around inside of us, we may be tempted to believe that we are separate or disconnected from love. But that is the farthest thing from the truth. Love includes everything; there is noting that love does not love. I’ve often heard it said that fear and other so-called “negative emotions” are the opposite of love. Matt Licata, psycho-therapist and author of The Path is Everywhere and The Unfolding Heart, helped me to understand several years ago that love has no opposite. Licata writes, “Some will tell you that fear is the opposite of love. And in this teaching the war begins. But love has no opposite, for it is whole and without division. Love is the field in which all form comes and goes, including the temporary, wavelike appearance of fear. It is the vast, tender space in which all emotions, feelings, and physical sensations arise, play for a short while, and then dissolve. Just like passing clouds could never taint the purity of the sky, the temporary dance of fear could never stain the majesty of what you are.” Uncomfortable thoughts, feelings and sensations are actually harbingers of love. Spiritual Horoscope 13

February Horoscope AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 – FEB. 18) Happy birthday Aquarius! This’ll be a breakthrough year about love and finances. Meditate and open your mind to see what blocks fulfillment in these areas. Note down what you discover. Don’t pick on yourself, but get peaceful and become aware of steps toward solutions. Find a trusted friend to help you stay accountable, as you gently alter your thoughts and behaviors. A big clue can be forgiving childhood patterns instilled from family. All wounds can heal through love, patience and action! PISCES (FEB. 19 – MARCH 20) Make sure you allow yourself to play, have fun and spend time with friends! You tend to work so hard on your spiritual growth and personal improvement that you can drift into morbid reflection. Trust that the hard work you do is still actively impacting you even when taking attention off of your “flaws”! In fact, more healing can happen during that rest and relaxation time. Have a prosperous friend or trusted advisor give assistance with finances. Breakthroughs with money happen as you create a balanced budget. ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19) It’s a great career month! You can get a job or assignment you’ve been striving for. Mars is still in your sign, giving you inspiration and energy to start new goals — however, be sure to meditate daily so you use your power most efficiently and wisely. Your intuition is also at a high pointt, so take advantage of it! Ponder commitment issues in relationships. Make sure you’re not creating distance from your partner. Also watch for “being bored” which can mask fear of intimacy! TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Reconnect with your love of meditation, yoga or your favorite spiritual practices! Pay extra attention to dreams for inspiration and guidance. Spend time with friends who are aligned with your metaphysical ideas. The more you talk about your internal reality, the more “real” it becomes. The validation keeps you on your path of selfdiscovery. Mars moves into your sign for two months, giving

energy and courage for change. You can start a new relationship; go for a challenging job; or surprise yourself with shifts that previously made you apprehensive! GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20) It’s appropriate with Valentine’s Day approaching because this month is about surrendering to love. Watch for inner defenses that push others away. Are you snarky and sarcastic? Are you chronically busy or distracted? Meditate on barriers that keep you from absorbing love. Do you dwell on negative beliefs about yourself? Do you choose partners with vastly different values and goals? Forgive yourself for all these patterns as you stay aware of them. Watch love flow in! Also use the same investigative process on limits around financial abundance. Take a vigorous yoga class or even play sports to increase your enthusiasm for change and growth. CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22) If you’re struggling about relationships, meditate and allow for inner wisdom to arise. Don’t stress or worry about figuring things out. Don’t have endless conversations with people that go in circles. Quieting your heart brings answers and clues that lead to healing and harmony. If single, you can draw a solid person who matches your values. Work-wise you’ll be challenged, yet eager to learn. You can even move into more leadership. Just beware of gossip. Stay out of it and let people’s egos spin and crash around you!

LEO (JULY 23 – AUG. 22) Balance your enthusiasm for spiritual growth with gentle selfcare. Evolving your consciousness isn’t a competition. If you feel perfectionism creeping in or jealousy at others’ accomplishments, try going softer, not harder. Practice deep breathing in the day, as well as meditation, getting enough rest, body care sessions or yoga. Then you’ll have energy reserves to “go for it” when the time is right and not be burned out. You can also get a work promotion or praise from superiors. Your heart and pure motives are acknowledged by those who matter! VIRGO (AUG. 23 – SEPT. 22) Much like your Gemini friends, meditate on the ways you push intimacy away. Intimacy can mean love, relationships, peacefulness, prosperity, or joy. Your biggest obstacle is probably self-criticism. Vow to stop the “compare and despair” trap. Working toward selfimprovement doesn’t mean you can’t be cherished now as you are. Practice saying “yes” to positive feelings, to compliments, to abundant possibilities. Let your partner or a trusted friend know about this inner journey so he/she can support you. LIBRA (SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22) You can be starting a sexy new relationship! If partnered, you can re-spark primal attraction. Either way, this month awakens your passion for life in all areas. You’ll also feel bold enough to be direct about what isn’t working in relationships,. You can clear out issues and build healthier communication and connection. Make sure your home is comfortable and relaxing. Have a dedicated space for meditation that’s inviting and soothing. You can also heal memories about childhood “stuff” that interferes with joy and confidence. Reconnect with old friends who really know who you are at your core. SCORPIO (OCT. 23 – NOV. 21) Like Libra pals, you can be starting a new relationship that’s

EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM

not only passionate but aligned with your deepest values. You get closest to people who you know have the capacity for deep communication and insights into life and themselves. Meditate on being patient with those in your life who do not have those abilities, especially co-workers. Also be sure to rest this month and make time to eat well. Eliminate foods that cause physical inflammation or emotional agitation like coffee, sugar or gluten. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 – DEC. 21) Valentine’s month brings lots of opportunities for love, play and joy! Even in a longterm connection, make efforts to revitalize your energy together. Focus on finances. Meditating on prosperity expands your wallet so you can pay bills and debts while still saving and even having money to burn! You can get a promotion at work or feel newly inspired by your job. Also try active and challenging forms of yoga. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 – JAN. 19) Venus in your sign, bringing selflove, prosperity and general good feelings! Meditate on having the discipline to “dwell” on positive thoughts, beliefs and outcomes. It’s too easy as a Capricorn to focus on negative things that you would say are “realistic.” Choose an upbeat friend to have conversations about gratitude each day. You’ll have more physical energy, less problems in relationships and amazing breakthroughs in many areas of your life! Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer.
