Publisher’s Letter... Dear Friend,

The Joy of Living From Your Soul on Purpose

I watched a video recently of my three-year-old grandson, Andrew, wildly and unabashedly dancing—head pumping up and down, eyes closed, pure joy on his face. To me, when we can release fear, worry or self-consciousness about what others might think and just let go, that is joy expressed, the theme for this issue. As I’ve gotten older, I catch myself watching closely, making sure I don’t get “out of control.” I’ve tried to be more calm, more responsible, not be silly…in public at least. And I’m sorry for my misconceived idea that to be grown up means to let go of the joy children so naturally express. When I was younger, play time was creative. I made up songs, drew in the dirt with a stick, built a fort out of a sheet and used creativity in a myriad of other ways to feel and express joy. And while I try to act proper in public, in private I still experience joy through creative expression. While gardening, ‘hooping, and yes even dancing like my grandson, I find myself completely immersed in the moment and out of my “responsible” head for just a bit. And I feel the pure joy that is expressed by living authentically. This past year I’ve stepped even farther outside my box and found the joy of travel, adventure and meeting new people while discovering their cultures. I’ve found my most alive self on these trips. And although fearful much of the time, I am alternately high from these life-altering moments. My wish is that we can all be like children and express shameless joy publicly—no matter what others think—and relish in our innate freedom to cherish these moments.

Rev. Lynne Valle shares her vision for world peace by launching The 1,000 Cranes Peace Project on the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, August 6, 2015. This project was inspired by the legacy of Sadako Sasaki (1943-1955), a child-victim of radiation induced Leukemia ("the atom bomb" disease). While receiving treatment at Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital, Sadako was introduced to a Japanese legend, which promises that anyone who folds 1,000 cranes will be granted a wish. She hoped that by folding the paper cranes she would be healed. Sadako folded nearly 1,300 cranes before dying. In 1958, a 30-foot statue of Sadako with arms uplifted, supporting a large golden crane was unveiled in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The inscription reads, “This is our cry. This is our prayer. For building peace in this world.” Ten million origami cranes are delivered to the Peace Memorial Park every year from all over the world.

4

JULY 2015

Rev. Valle folded 1,000 origami cranes between January 2015 and May 2015 and then incorporated the cranes into a work of art. She set an intention that her project would help “build peace in this world,” and prayed many prayers as she folded cranes, including, “Let there be peace on earth.” The 1,000 Cranes Peace Project is a nondenominational, interfaith peace initiative. Rev. Valle invites you to participate by praying five minutes a day, five days a week, for inner peace while feeling peace or love. This model is an adaptation from the one described by Gregg Braden in his book, The Divine Matrix, in which he discusses the landmark International Peace Project in the Middle East. Award-Winning Film About Hindu Mystic Comes to Overland Park On July 27, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. Gathr® Films will present a special screening of the critically acclaimed film AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda at B&B Overland Park 16 located at 8601 W 135th St., Overland Park, KS. With strong endorsement from mainstream press, and a run of sold-out shows in theaters across the country, Awake is now sweeping the nation with screenings made possible inpart by Gathr® Films’ “Theatrical on Demand®” service. AWAKE is an unconventional biography about Paramahansa Yogananda, the world-renowned author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920s. Many highly influential people—including Steve Jobs, George Harrison, and Russell Simmons, all of whom are featured in the film -have been deeply impacted by Yogananda. In bringing the once-secret techniques of yoga to the West, Yogananda was committed to democratizing these teachings. “He knew the power of initiative,“ says renowned Yoga and Ayurveda instructor Mas Vidal, who is also featured in AWAKE. “He didn't wait for anybody to get this wisdom out.” Yogananda sent out lessons via mail; at a time when mail order was considered a brand new cutting-edge technology. The Gathr Films Theatrical on Demand model is today’s vanguard technology for delivering a message to communities across America. Gathr makes it possible for anyone to book AWAKE into their local theaters by becoming a “movie captain,” and attracting like-minded friends and colleagues to order tickets in advance. Through this process, theatrical screenings of AWAKE are virtually possible wherever and whenever there is a critical mass.

Having read Autobiography of a Yogi and having practiced Yogananda’s teachings for many years, I still never really knew the story of what he went through to bring these teachings from India to the west. The movie shares significant details on his efforts to bring the benefits of yoga to the west during a time when yoga was a very foreign concept. It is a very inspiring movie and I can’t wait to see it again! Wendy MacDonald, AWAKE Gathr Movie Captain. CounterPoint Films is using the Gathr model as a way to make it possible for filmgoers to be able to view the movie in cities and towns where traditional theater bookings may not exist, that they too may experience Yogananda’s visionary message of Self-realization. For information about this July 27 screening event or to “pre-order” tickets, visit the screening page at https:// gathr.us/screening/12473. earning about body language provides much insight. When working as a young consultant to a business firm, the CEO often placed his hands in a “steeple” gesture. It interprets as confidence, but also may be a sign of arrogance. I suggested he drop this gesture. Dear friends of mine came to dinner and I was amazed that both of them parked their left arm on the table with the right elbow on the table, shoveling in the food. “Did your parents not teach us to keep our elbows off the table?” I asked. They gave me hate stares. Pamela Holland, a business coach, writes the best answer for this behavior is that it violates a hygiene taboo. “Don’t do it for the same reason you do not place your purse on the table. The table stays hygienic. The more of the arm on the table the less hygienic it is.” Some claim that the no-elbows rule developed in medieval times, when diners pressed so close together that one’s elbows might end up in their neighbour’s dinner. Nowadays we have more room; but, especially at occasions where people don’t know each other well, putting elbows on the table can still make other diners feel uncomfortable. It is fine to rest your forearms on the table’s edge. Leaning forward demonstrates you’re interested in what the other person is saying Other sure-tell body language: 1. Rubbing palms of the hands together is a sign of positive expectation. 2. Clenched hands may show frustration or anxiety. The height of the hands may show the level of the frustration. 3. Crossing arms in front of your chest may imply defensiveness (plus it creates poor posture). 4. Supporting your head with your hand may be a sign of boredom. 5. If the hand rests on the chin it means he/she is paying close attention. 6. The “thinker” gesture of the thumb and index finger on the chin is someone making a decision.

6

7. Rubbing your hand behind your neck reveals one is feeling intimidated, angry, or threatened. 8. Experts say those who fiddle with their hair, jewelry or buttons are hiding their opinions. 9. If someone makes little or no eye contact, or you see rapid eye movements, this may imply the person is dishonest. 10. If a person breathes hard, or color changes in the face or neck, this may imply lying. Good yoga teachers learn to read the body. Such posture as shoulders rounded forward may imply the person is anxious or depressed. I sequence easy back bends and chest openers when I see this. The Yoga Journal notes (from a philosophy called The Yoga Sutra) that standing tall cultivates the seeds of good posture. As we stand tall it conveys the essence of Sutra II.46 sthira sukham asanam, or “find comfort in our bodies as well as a sense of stability and grounding.” Miss Manners is still published around the country. I think she would agree to keep elbows off the table— standing tall and fidget free is not bad advice either.

oy is often an elusive experience, sought by many and found by few. Merriam-Webster tells us that joy is “the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or the prospect of possessing what one desires; a state of happiness or felicity.” This makes joy a very subjective experience depending a great deal on our sense of well-being, our perception of success or fortune, dependent on our very personal desires. Anti-Aging Strategic Plan: A Natural Approach

H

appy summer! As I walk through my front yard and enjoy my beautiful roses that I planted and nurtured, I think of the cycles of life, the changing of the seasons and taking time to smell the flowers! To enjoy this amazing life for many years to come, I have been researching how and why our body’s age and how we can impact this process. Life expectancy has approximately doubled in the last century. Walter Breuning, 112 years old, one of the oldest living persons says his secrets to longevity are: “Staying active in body and mind, practicing moderation and treating others with kindness and respect.” Genetics or predisposition to diseases of aging and your longevity is based 25 percent on your genetics and 75 percent on your behaviors and life style choices. Dr Mehmet Oz says, “Restricting your calories, increasing your strength and getting quality sleep, along with stress management can control how well you age. ” Five strategic steps to anti-aging include: restful sleep, regular exercise, balanced nutrition, stress management and spiritual enrichment. 1. Sleep offers rebuilding of tissues and maintenance of a healthy metabolism. A good goal is seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep—feeling rested in the morning and with good stamina throughout the day. 2. Exercise builds muscle, stamina and helps with energy. A good goal at least 30 minutes three to five times a week with variety. Some suggestions would be: Aerobic exercises with interval training, resistance and strength training, flexibility exercise with relaxation breathing.

3. Nutrition is about fueling your body with healthy nutrients. Guidelines include: Eat fresh, whole, unprocessed food, drink filtered water and herbal teas, and avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners. Staple foods are vegetables, nuts, seeds, cage-free eggs, grass fed organic meats, wild caught fish, olive and coconut oils, avocado and small amounts of fruits, wild rice, quinoa and unprocessed or raw dairy. 4. Stress management revitalizes your body and mind, and can take you to another level of optimal health. Ideas for relaxation: Take time to be still with relaxation breathing, prayer and meditation; think positive thoughts, assess your attitude, and bring humor and laughter into your life. Develop strong connections and lasting relationships with family and friends. 5. Spiritual enrichment and to have a spiritual purpose is important for each of us, in our own way, no matter what our belief system. For me, a deep connection with God helps keep the ups and downs of life in perspective and gives me peace.

perhaps going on a cleansing fruit and vegetable only diet for a day, taking a solid hour walk, get good sleep, or just breathe in the beauty of nature, it makes the next step so much easier. I challenge you to change your life today, starting right now. Write down each of the five strategic steps above and make one or two goals in each area that you can achieve in your life today or in the next few months. No matter what kind of life you’ve already led, aging is reversible. If you perform a good habit for three years, the effect on your body is as if you’ve done it your entire life. Even better, within three months of changing a behavior, you start to measure a difference in your life expectancy. I plan to become a centenarian; won’t you join me on this journey?

These five strategic steps to anti-aging could also be the pillars of our health—all profoundly and powerfully intertwined and mutually affecting. They can move in either a positive or a negative spiral. If I’m stressed out and sedentary, I can find it harder not to reach for the sweet treat or fast food item. Then I sleep more poorly and my general mood makes hope, trust and peace harder to ascertain. On the other hand, when I have good sleep and energy, my body craves good nutritious food and more movement and my mood lightens. As I make one change,

Be Still and Know Self

M

any wonder how they can learn to still themselves and move into a state of peacefulness. Stilling the mind as a beginner can become very frustrating because it may seem as though your thoughts actually become busier the more you attempt to quiet them. That mind jabber is the ego’s attempt to stay in control of what you do or not do. Because it feels so normal for the ego to have the control, many people do not yet realize that there is a higher, more peaceful aspect of mind that, when tapped into, will eventually tame the ego with its tutelage. What gives the ego so much power to sabotage? Fear. Fear of everything and anything that threatens a person’s beliefs and perceptions. Once we tire of being a puppet for the ego, we begin to question the validity of life and our self. Questions like: Which of my beliefs do I protect so much that I rise to anger when they are seemingly threatened; Do my desires cause me to be more giving or more selfish; What is my purpose in life? It is the perception of self, one’s beliefs and also one’s view of God that are the most protected and most easily threatened. They are used in order to give personal meaning and purpose to one’s life. When a person feels their meaning and purpose are being attacked, they can feel very threatened and insecure. It’s time to aspire to a higher standard of being in the world; it begins with knowing yourself, not only as a human being, but also as a spiritual being. That means moving into the heart as much as possible and by having compassion for all human error with the understanding that we are all on a journey that was designed to serve us in exactly the way that it is manifesting. Beyond Food as Medicine

H

ubby and I have fasted for seven to 10 days every spring for many years now. This year’s fast stood out from others. It revealed how food, or lack thereof, influenced our relationship with one another and the world. It showed us that the power of food goes way beyond medicine to shaping our behavior as individuals and a culture. Now that’s powerful. Here’s what we observed and the questions that arose: Deep Rest. It’s normal for the body and mind to assume a slow idle, using minimal energy after a few days of fasting. If we demanded more our brains and bodies clearly protested. So we chose to limit our exertion. We felt good as long as we didn’t do too much, but wondered if the fast was draining our energy. Not so. We came out of this fast deeply rested, both mentally and physically. We all know how hard it is to slow down these days. Fasting, we discovered, is a vehicle for deep rest, as long as we honor our body’s signals. This led us to ask, “When do we truly rest?” Like most people, we usually go somewhere on vacation. There’s lots of activity and stimulation with places to go and people to see. It’s a great change of pace, nourishing to the soul, but it isn’t always restful. Most people need to be stopped, by illness, accident or loss, to rest. Yet there is this wonderful, healing way to rest, fasting. Present Moment Awareness. This wasn’t a conscious choice, but appeared to be created by this idling state. Time slowed. We slowed. It just happened. We fully took in whatever the present moment offered us: enjoying the birds in our yard, taking a warm bath, sitting in the sun or cleaning up after juicing. A quiet space arose from which I could discern feelings more clearly and let them go. While the aspiration to be present is quite popular, many people find it difficult. Could fasting be a natural way to experience the present moment with very little effort that could continue or be recalled once the fast is over? Cooperation. We’ve all seen the cave drawings of hunters. Did it take so many men because the animal was big, or because their energy was low from days without food? It took two of us to make the juice each day, a job usually done by Hubby alone while I attend to something

10

JULY 2015

else. Or perhaps in that present moment state of mind I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Whatever the reason, doing things together was the best part of the fast for Hubby. In these times where people crave connection but feel more disconnected than ever, where government and society are characterized by disagreement and conflict—fasting could help us rediscover our commonality and shared goals. Could it be that as food has become more abundant, we have become more selfcentered rather than communitycentered, more concerned about our own needs, wants and advancement because we no longer need one another to fulfill our basic needs? Could fasting together put us in touch with our interdependence with each other and the earth? Wise Energy Use. The day we broke our fast, I kept my regularly scheduled voice lesson. I expected the lesson would be fun as always, but a write-off in terms of performance. Instead two things happened. My voice was relaxed. I could hold notes that usually require me to take a catch breath. But, my voice teacher noticed something more profound. I was singing with less effort and that less effort lead to a desirable quality of stillness appropriate to the piece I was singing. Which again led me to ask another question: “Where in our lives are we applying too much effort?” How many of us are splashing instead of gliding smoothly through the waters of life? By applying less energy, could we find more stillness in our lives? I hope this article motivates you to join me and Hubby for next spring’s fast.

The Joy of Living From Your Soul on Purpose “When you live from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.” Rumi

T

his past weekend I was asked to facilitate 60 teens aged 11-18 through a daylong introspective workshop. My task was to invite them to find and express one of their soul’s deepest longings for this year, a goal, a purpose that they wanted to express, and the intention with which they wanted to express it. It was a daunting task to undertake. Fortunately, as an experienced facilitator, I have learned that I can trust my self and my soul to show up and do the work. It was a true joy for me, and together we built and shared a connection of safety and joy. There are many ways to experience joy. In my book, Who Have You Come Here to BE? 101 Possibilities for Contemplation, I share this teaching on joy: “The letters of the word joy, stand for Just Open Yourself. Open yourself to the beauty, the wonder, the love, the very presence and sacredness of life all around you. Revel in the tiniest treats, be buoyed by the boldness of color, and be transported by the sweetness of fragrance. Slow down. Breathe. See. Know. Celebrate the wonder of it all and feel joy well up from within with unstoppable speed and overflowing abundance. Joy is a state of being achievable anytime, anywhere.” My favorite way to open myself and allow in the awesomeness of the world is to support people on their quest for joy. Helping people find and live from their soul’s purpose is my soul purpose. And

and what gifts you have to give the world. Once you have a sense of what your soul is calling you to be, focus first on a series of micro-changes. That means tiny steps, shifts and decisions that make micro-progress toward embodying your purpose. When you have enough of these under your belt, consider taking a bigger step, or even a leap, that brings you into greater alignment with your soul, your self. So what about it? Will you take up the challenge and get your joy on? I can think of nothing more powerful, more healing, and more needed on our planet right now than you in your joy.

A Kiss for My Little Girl

y mom’s cousin came hurriedly into the room, excited that she’d finally found the journal she was looking for. My mom had written a poem about her mother just after she’d passed away a few weeks earlier and her cousin thought she might be the only person who knew about it, now that my mom was making her own unexpected transition. As she thumbed through the book, a piece of paper fell out. Picking it up, she said, “Oh look, your mom kept a note from a little child.” She handed it to me and I looked to see who it was from. A rush of tenderness came over me as I realized who wrote it, and now, as I lay in bed next to my dying mother, I read the words she had written to her little girl self. They were words about love and happiness and having fun together...telling her she was glad she was born, that she was loveable and that she’d always take of her. The other side of the paper revealed, in a child’s handwriting, her love and appreciation for being wanted, taken care of, and feeling safe. It seemed like it was no accident that this page fell out of the journal and into my hands. It was a heart-touching moment.

Wanderlust: Santa Fe

wan der lust noun a strong desire to travel. I don’t know if wanderlust is innate, instilled or inherited, but I caught the bug at an early age. As a school teacher, my mother traveled extensively each summer—I was her lucky companion. As a teenager, we spent summers traveling the US or backpacking through Europe. But then I grew up, had children of my own, and left that all behind. The lust lay dormant for 35 years. This year I renewed my passion and started exploring the United States by rail. The first leg of my journey took me to New Mexico and Arizona in January. “I think I’m going to throw up.” It was 10 o’clock at night and we had just arrived at the train station. The nerves and excitement that got me through the days of planning and packing for this first journey of the USA by rail had turned to dread. My friend pulled into the circle drive and stopped. I sat there, silently refusing to get out and take this first step. “I mean it. I’m going to throw up,” I threatened. “Get your luggage out of the trunk,” Paula replied. Paula, who for weeks had been more scared for me than I was for myself, was now an incredibly brave woman. She had worried about me being so far away; she had worried about my safety; she bought me pepper spray and told me to keep it close. Then she kicked me out of the car. “I’m not coming in,” she said. “I have to work in the morning. Now get your luggage out of the trunk.” Flush, near panic, I did as she said. I grabbed my two incredibly heavy roller bags and stacked one on top of the other. I’d spent months obsessing over the best way to carry my office and clothing, but not once did I load the bags and stack them on top of each other for a trial run. They were so heavy I could barely lift them over the curb. I suddenly worried what I would do if the weight broke the wheels of the bottom luggage. Too late to make a change, I stacked the luggage, then added my purse, a food cooler, my camera bag. I was a onewoman traveling show of excess. And while in the midst of inconceivable scenes of poverty, I would feel shamed by my immoderation. But that’s another story.

JULY 2015

Spiritual Horoscope

July 2015 Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Happy birthday Cancer! Energetic Mars in your sign helps you eagerly set goals and take action. Meditate on what you really want — spiritually, physically, relationship-wise, etc. Focus and be open to the best steps to take. Even if you don’t have precise ideas, get started and guidance will come! If planning a job change, efforts could take until September to manifest, but they will happen! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Please meditate on old resentments and disappointments over the past two years. Clean out your subconscious so it doesn’t sabotage future relationships and finances. Also, ponder spiritual beliefs and release ideas that don’t support your soul’s evolution. Embrace what’s true in your core and live from that inner reality!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Release current ideas about yourself! Venus moves retrograde in Virgo, creating a fluid self-image. You’re always evolving, but can get suck in a limiting belief of “this is me.” Relationships improve, as well as health, finances, mood and social life. You’ll be eager to trying new things and feel expanded and joyous!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Venus is retrograde, helping clear your heart of the past eight years of challenges with love, money and selfworth. Meditate and journal about disappointing issues. As you move through grief or anger, know that releasing this energy allows desires to be fulfilled in the future. Immediate changes occur with work and self-value. Relationships improve in segments through year’s end.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Meditate on how you use your time. Do you prioritize spiritual practices? How about relaxation? Are the people

surrounding you in alignment with your goals and passions? Make changes you need to feel fulfilled. You might want to challenge yourself with a cleanse — a fast, a silent retreat or an intense yoga workshop. You’ll feel purified and also ready to have fun!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Dare to talk about deep emotional issues with your partner to bring more intimacy. You might also talk directly (and calmly!) about combined finances — or sexual issues. If single, you might journal or talk with a trusted friend or even a therapist about intimacy blocks. This is intense spiritual work and you’ll fully reap the benefits by December. Meditate on your goals; have patience and watch things unfold as the months progress!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) You’re not usually reactive, but take a breath before speaking. People easily push your buttons right now! Actually the Universe is pushing you ahead in relationships and career. It’s about progress, but you could feel it as irritability. Meditate on what you’d like to change, and talk with your partner about how to make mutual improvements so you’re both happier.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Meditate deeply on how words, beliefs and habitual thoughts create reality. It’s a powerful time to be able to break mental patterns and recreate your life

from building new “thoughtforms”. You asked to be an Aquarius to master your mind, and you have the ability to do it! Also examine your diet for stimulants, like sugar or caffeine. Help your mind be focused, not scattered!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Relationships move to a new level, or you can meet a new love! However, it’s vital to meditate and release past issues that keep you from receiving now. Journal about the last eight years, remembering good times and also unfulfilled desires. Smash limiting beliefs created by “bad stuff”. Visualize clearly what you want so it can manifest. Forgive yourself, since self-love is healing now too!

negative pattern. You might connect with people from the past and heal happily. Affirmations are especially powerful, so say them with vigor!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Shifts are happening deep in your soul about the type of people you attract for friends and romantic relationships. This is good, since it’s an upgrade! But there’s a grieving as you let go and forgive the old. Since you’re intellectual, you can push emotions down. Watch for overspending as subverted sadness, as well as irritability. Meditate, journal and take time to just allow yourself to feel. Then you’ll open to greater fulfillment!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) This might sound weird, but work on releasing your identity. You’re much more than you feel you are! Scientists say we only use a small percentage of our brain, so by meditating and releasing the limitations you call “you”, you’re open to an exciting new set of possibilities! You’ll attract better relationships. You’ll have better health and moods. Fearlessly tap into your spiritual potential!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Pay attention to your dreams! Your intuition is very strong and it’ll be even stronger with daily meditation. Problems in relationships heal at the root since you can see the crux of the
