The Monaplanner! There’s a new planner in town! You’ve probably used many different planning tools over the years… everything from a Big Chief Tablet to your smart phone. There are hundreds of tools to stay organized, and monaplanner developer Mona Raglow has used many of them. She’s been a time management and organizational junkie since she was a kid, and understands many of the pitfalls of trying to stay organized as an adult. The monaplanner was tested and revised many times by local business women, who are now loyal monaplanner users. The monaplanner isn’t a calendar, or a scheduling system. It IS a way to prioritize all of the gazillions of projects and activities that professional women have to balance on a daily basis. AND, it helps us say no to things that aren’t

Some of the unique features of the monaplanner are: Weekly Brain Dump, a place to write what you’re grateful for, a Parking Lot (so you don’t lose track of great ideas), and a gentle reminder not to think you have to be superwoman everyday (or ever). Added to version 2, releasing in June 2015 is a month at a glance calendar, tips and tricks to stay organized, and reminders about self-care. It is undated, and covers 3 months. Plans are in the works for specialty monaplanners, including social media, healthy eating and meal planning, and even a specialty yoga version. Mona will be partnering with others who are experts in their field to incorporate these topics.

Wisdom Within

Those Tricky Beliefs!

F

ebruary 2015: One of those strange KC snowstorms hit as I drove to the airport. The weather forecast warned late snow in the evening. I left the house at 11 am. I hit the brakes on the 635 Interstate when a tornado-like snow swirled around my car. I slowed to a snail’s pace. “No way is my plane on time,” I said to myself. On time it was! I settled into my LA hotel in an “upgraded” suite. Go figure! Awakening refreshed, arms around this new day, we focused upon a guided imagery called yoga nidra. My intent was clear as a mirror: Clean out old beliefs that hold me back, such as “plane will be late.” We work to discover how we think, how we choose, how we act or behaviors that may limit our success. The teaching was weaved with love, tremendous love. I can lean on this love, I know and trust. Old stuff rises. Time to clean it up. I wish to open my heart, no matter what pain remains within and to heal. I want the love and peace that comes with healing. The four days uplifted and changed me. I felt like a hot-air balloon soaring above the clouds. At LAX, folks began talking to me for no reason at all. Good talks. Good visits. This made the trip home fun. Early March 2015: Dr. Christine Northrop, OB/GYN airs her new show on PBS. She authors many books on her groundbreaking work on holistic health. Her new book is called Glorious Women Never Age! I grabbed a pen: 1. Reframe the term “aging” from decline and deterioration to aliveness and energy. 2. Monitor your language and never say you have a “senior” moment or criticize self. Why does this start when one turns 40? Or 30? Do you hear how afraid of aging our young ones are? 3. Forget making “milestone” birthdays a big deal. One study revealed positive beliefs about growing older added twelve years to one’s life. 4. Keep your blood sugar stable and it counters stress hormones such as cortisol. 5. Know how to counter stress. Define your methods. Use them. 6. Develop your network of friends and family for fun and support, what she calls “your tribe.”

Late March 2015: I received news of the death of a family member. In front of my students, much to my chagrin, I began to cry. The call came and there was no time to process the news. Later that day, Henry Thoreau’s quote gives me comfort: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” My new focus: 1. Practice and learn to VALUE SELF by creating more self esteem, more dignity, more confidence, more respect, more awareness and more compassion. 2. We all ping-pong the ball from love to fear. Keep the ball in love’s court. 3. My computer posts my updated beliefs so I read them daily. 4. Choose to weed old beliefs. Then fill the holes with gratitude. 5. Be patient with self, meaning to pay attention to details of your thoughts and feelings. As I type here “I feel the gift of a new breath.” I am here. I am present. 6. Give generously with no measure of return. Just give. 7. Become “power filled” as you choose, act and become comfortable to author your life. Let go of “domination” and create “dominion.” Keep it fun. Even if dreams are not yet realized, the more fun you have the more they will come.

Journey to Wholeness

Type and the Spiritual Quest

H

ave you ever wondered about individual differences and choices for a spiritual path? Observation would tell us that different types of people tend to prefer different spiritual practices. Within a religious or spiritual group one might find that people prefer different kinds of activities. Studying the neuroscience of personality gives us some clues to peoples’ choices of spiritual paths and spiritual activities. Here are the four pairs of qualities explored in Jungian typology: Extraversion: Stimulated by the outer world of people and things. Introversion: Derives energy from the inner world of ideas, concepts and feelings. Sensing: Concrete, practical, sensory world, here and now. Intuition: Big picture, possibilities, future, symbolic. Thinking: Arrive at conclusions through rational, logical reasoning processes. Feeling: Making decisions based on values, harmony, and subjective views. Judging: Organized, planning, taskoriented. Perceiving: Flexible, spontaneous, process-oriented. Those who prefer extraversion might be drawn to group or action-oriented activities. The internal journey that is inward, quiet and inspirational would be more appealing to the person who prefers introversion. Research indicates that about 60-70 percent of the population prefers extraversion while 30-40 percent prefer introversion. This might explain why the solitary spiritual path calls fewer people. I believe the popularity of meditation, imagery, relaxation exercises and hypnosis is the missing element for many people in our extroverted culture. A recent research study by Professor Timothy Wilson at the University of Virginia showed that nearly half of the people preferred to selfadminister an electric shock during 15 minutes of quiet time. Learning a skill that challenges our predispositions, both personally and culturally, can be difficult. Finding meaning or purpose in this quiet activity can be very helpful. Sensors tend to prefer practical, pragmatic spiritual practices with known outcomes. They like to follow tradition and do things the way they have been done before. Intuitors might like practices that utilize symbols, imagination and exploring

possibilities. The future is more important than the here and now. Since sensors outnumber intuitors three to one, it is no surprise that religious or spiritual activities are very real, present, often allowing for little ambiguity or question, showing practical applications, and can be more pessimistic. Intuitors, who are more often the visionaries, like the creative, optimistic, verbal and conflict-free approach. The thinking and feeling processes guide our decisions. Thinking types benefit from the structure of prayer or activities, liking order and routine while wanting truth, justice and peace. The feeling process person is more attracted to the personal relationship with others in a community, harmony and peace in the immediate environment, the community and the world. Personal agreement with the values of the organization are important. Judging and perceiving attitudes tell us how we prefer to live out our spirituality. For judging types spirituality is best expressed through regular practices and routines. Perceiving types like spontaneity, flexibility and openness. As you think about your spiritual journey, consider what attracts you about a practice and what fulfills you. You may see patterns in what you choose to do. It would also be helpful to think about the activities that are more challenging. Maybe you prefer the group activities. Someone else prefers the quiet alone activity. Challenge yourself to develop the types of practices that are more difficult for you, as you foster the ones that are more innate. I am sure you will find your spiritual journey to be richer and fuller while your faith is deepened in different ways.

Can You Reverse Type 2 Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes?

T

he Diabetes Summit was a recent national podcast which presented a wealth of information. It was a mission by physicians, naturopathic doctors and nutritionists to show research and experience with patients across the country in preventing and reversing diabetes mellitus, Type 2. As complications from Type 2 diabetes kills one person every 10 seconds in the United States and has the possibility to be prevented and even reversed; it is time to get the word out with some tools to do so. Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, which comprises 90 percent of people with diabetes usually begins years before it is actually diagnosed. The other types of diabetes, Type 1, autoimmune type with little to no insulin being produced and Type 1.5 and gestational diabetes will not be discussed here, but is worth mentioning that women who have blood sugar issues or diabetes with pregnancy are much more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Generally the body is sensitive to insulin and is released when you eat a meal. The amount of insulin released is in proportion to how much sugar and carbohydrates are eaten and keeps your blood sugar in the normal range. When a person continually eats a large amount of sugar, refined carbohydrates and processed foods, the body has a mechanism to make large amounts of insulin but the body becomes resistant so as to not develop blood sugars that are too low. Insulin resistance is the first sign of type 2 diabetes and the person’s blood sugar may be completely normal and the hgbA1c is also normal. The hgbA1c or sometimes called, A1c is a blood test that shows an average of the

The Book of Knowing and Worth An Interview with Paul Selig

I

n his breakthrough works of channeled literature Paul Selig recorded an extraordinary program for personal and planetary evolution as humankind awakens to its own divine nature. I Am the Word, The Book of Love and Creation and his newest addition to the trilogy The Book of Knowing and Worth, are energetic transmissions that work directly on their readers to bring them into alignment with the frequency of the Word, which Paul’s guides call the energy of “God in Action.” Jill Mangino: When did you know you had a gift as a channel and an empath? Paul Selig: I was volunteering at a place called The Manhattan Center for Living in the early 90’s – I had studied a form of energy healing to gain a context for the stuff I was beginning to experience – and found that I could feel in my own body and energy field what was going on in the bodies of my clients. I soon began to “hear” for them, and, as I began to trust the information that was coming through me, I began to open up more. I can’t say that I knew that I was channeling until it was actually happening. I had been a playwright for many years, so the idea of opening up to other voices was not entirely strange to me. However, what was surprising to me was how accurate the transmissions I was receiving were, and how consistent the information and teachings were. Mangino: You’ve worked in academia for many years. Was it hard for you to come of the metaphysical “closet”? Selig: A few months ago, my work as a psychic was profiled in New York Magazine. The article led with the line “Paul Selig lives a double life. When he’s not transcending the ordinary plane of perception in order to read other people’s thoughts, he teaches playwriting at NYU.” I’d kept a very low profile at NYU for over 25 years, and was expecting some kind of backlash, which actually never came. I think the world is very different than it was when I first began my work – people are generally more accepting and the reality is, there’s video of me channeling all over the Internet at this point, and not too much I can do about that. Goddard College, where I run the MFA in

Creative Writing has known about my metaphysical work since I began teaching there nearly 20 years ago – they’ve been wonderfully supportive, but that’s a school that has an amazing legacy of experimentation and inclusiveness. I think their support, in many ways, was instrumental in my moving my work out into the world. Mangino: Many people claim to have large energetic shifts while reading your books or attending your workshops. How does that work? Selig: The guides say that there are two books happening concurrently – the written words on the page that allow for the reader to comprehend, intellectually, what is happening with them and the text which works on the reader at an energetic level, which they say is the “real” text. Many, many readers are reporting large experiences while reading the texts – they can feel the energy working with them as they read and work with the exercise. It’s what the guides said would happen, and it seems to be happening all over the place. In their workshops the guides teach people to work with the energy they come through with, which they claim as the Word, or the energy of the Creator in action.

f you have trouble losing weight and consume caffeine daily, then it may be worthwhile to stop it. Here are some reasons why. Caffeine causes the body to release the stress hormone cortisol. In other words, caffeine prepares your body to run from a tiger. Cortisol breaks muscle down into amino acids, triggers the liver to release glucose, and pulls fatty acids from fat tissue so you have energy to for a quick get away. Most of us don’t drink caffeinated beverages in preparation for vigorous physical activity. Instead, we’re sedentary, driving to work, reading email or eating, for example. The energy mobilized by this caffeine induced cortisol surge has nowhere to go, so it is stored, usually as fat. High cortisol levels also disrupt your sleep cycle. To make matters worse, poor quality sleep itself increases cortisol levels. This creates a vicious circle. Caffeine perks you up after a poor night of sleep. Then you sleep poorly again and the cycle starts all over. The simplest way to weight loss I have found is to sleep better. Stopping daily caffeine use is the best way to promote quality sleep. Many weight loss supplements contain caffeine, likely for a diuretic effect. Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol found in unroasted coffee beans. Some claim it increases your metabolic rate. Whether or not this is true, roasting destroys chlorogenic acid and other polyphenols. So, that cup of Joe won’t help you burn fat. Stopping caffeine without a safety net can be brutal. You need a soft place to land. Here are some healthier ways to get energized, then you can proceed to get off the caffeine. Start your day with lemon water. Onehalf fresh lemon squeezed into eight ounces of water alkalizes your body pH, charging up all your cellular processes. It can also bring on a bowel movement, a reason many people use coffee. Rinse your mouth afterward to protect your tooth enamel. Apple cider vinegar is also an excellent alkalizer. Take one to two tablespoons mixed with half glass of water.. Stay hydrated. Not only does adequate hydration cut your appetite but it can clear your head and give you energy. Keep your blood sugar even. Nothing causes a surge in cortisol, or cravings for caffeine, like a drop in blood sugar. Many of my patients report the HealthSpan Metabolic Reset significantly reduces or eliminates their cravings for caffeine and sugar. Regular moderate exercise energizes you without caffeine, increases your stress

12

MAY 2015

resistance and prevents cortisol surges. Initially, your body may perceive walking 2 miles in 40 minutes as stressful and cortisol will be released. But as your physical condition improves and you can walk 2 miles more easily or in less time, less cortisol is released. It’s just not as stressful. The better your physical condition, the less cortisol released during times of emotional stress, too. Start your day with one of my “big five” nervous system tone reducers: Mindfulness practice, contemplative prayer, restorative yoga, tai chi and chi gong. All have been shown to lower cortisol levels. Regular practice can lead to sustained reductions in cortisol. Most CEOs start their day with one of these practices because it helps them handle the pressure of their position. Once you adopt a few of these strategies, you may already be craving less caffeine. One way to stop caffeine is to take a weekend to get through the headache and other withdrawal symptoms. It’s rough but it’s done. Another is to cut back a little each day. When a headache or other symptom comes on, drink half a cup of coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverage. Gradually make this ¼ cup as needed. Soon enough you won’t need it at all. The drawback of this gradual approach is some people never get to zero. So it takes commitment. Switching to decaf doesn’t work. It still increases cortisol levels because caffeine isn’t the only thing in caffeinated food and beverages that increases cortisol levels. So keep caffeine a treat, not a daily occurrence. Lower cortisol levels can equal lower body weight, better sleep and physical as well as emotional wellbeing.

Feeling Great: Creating a Life of Optimism, Enthusiasm and Contentment Sweetness is a virtue that searches for the good in every person and situation. At its heart is the conviction that there is always something positive to be found. You simply need the patience to discover it. --Eternal Blessings Optimism opens a door in difficult or hopeless situations. Optimism knows that there is always a way, no matter how many doors have been shut, and it believes that there is always a good alternative. No matter what the crisis, an optimistic outlook will tell you that the situation you are facing is a sign that you need to find a different way of thinking or a new way of doing things. Sometimes it's easy to miss the signal because change can be uncomfortable, to say the least. No one really wants to do the work it takes to change unless it's absolutely necessary, so they often ignore the warning signs until they become so obvious and clear that there is no other choice but to wake up. Now the choice is either to heed the warning and make a change or continue in selfdelusion and fall behind on your journey to develop a lifetime of feeling great. But if you take the road that lacks optimism instead of taking steps toward renaissance, your steps will lead you to complaints, resentment, or even desperation. Optimists hold on to hope . . . they don't ignore the reality and consequences of problems, but they also don't despair or lose themselves in the chaos when Pandora's Box is opened. In your daily life, you will face many obstacles; sometimes they will be bumps in the road, other times they will be complete detours. But no matter if it is a brief detour or a true Pandora's Box with a whole assortment of problems that bring fear, chaos, and distress, optimism will enable you to persevere. When you can draw on patience and determination, your commitment to positive thinking and introspection will allow you to find solutions, and it will attract healing and peace from within yourself and from the world around you. Work on becoming an optimist-maintain a gentle determination that will allow you to focus on potential alternatives and find solutions to problems. Be flexible and allow yourself to be led. Combine the art of making things happen with the ability to allow things to happen, and realize that more than one factor is involved in building a bridge and finding a solution. When you apply these principles to your life, you will feel yourself

moving closer and closer toward that constant state of feeling great that once was so elusive.

The Story of the Two Applicants A man answered an ad in the paper for a job, and was asked to come in and fill out an application. As he waited in the lobby he asked the receptionist, "How are the people here?" "Well, what were the people like where you worked before?" she responded. "They weren't very nice," he said. "They overworked me and my boss was strict and rude. I'm glad to be rid of them!" "Really?" replied the receptionist. "That's just how you'll find people here, too." Disgusted, the applicant picked up his keys and marched out the door. Half an hour later another applicant came through the door. While he was waiting for an interview, he asked the receptionist, "How are the people at this company?" "What were the people like where you worked before?" she replied. "Oh, they were great! My boss was good to me and gave me opportunities to learn new things. I worked hard but it was good work. I'm going to miss them," he mused. "Well, that's just how you'll find people here, too. You're going to love it!" she said. Lesson: Don't let your thoughts reside in a negative mind. An optimist resides in hope.

Exercise: Authentic Living Becoming an Optimist Here is an exercise that will sharpen your skills at being an optimist. Learn these rules and put them to practice; you will quickly find that they cease to be "rules" and become part of your character instead. Be mindful of them from morning to evening-they will carry you a long way toward fulfilling your goal of feeling great day after day.

Peter Vegso's 15 Rules for Happiness Sometimes we need a shift in perspective to lift our spirits. It's easy to get caught up in ourselves and our situations and allow them to dictate how we feel, but we can learn to control the inner and outer influences that affect us. We can actually train ourselves to overcome distressing or pessimistic emotions and enjoy greater happiness in our lives. 1. Be grateful for what you have-you may not have everything you want, but it's likely that you have everything you need.

EVOLVING‌IN KANSAS CITY

If you don't, be grateful for the ability to pursue your needs and set a plan to achieve them. 2. Find a source of awe in each day-there are a million things waiting to be discovered: a person's kindness, a sunrise, a faithful pet. Take a look around you and learn to recognize them. 3. Reach out to someone - be kind, listen, share something. Until you make that effort, you won't know what the person next to you needs. An encouraging word may be all that's needed to give someone an emotional boost. 4. Do something for yourself-even if it's something small like taking an extra ten minutes with your coffee in the morning or taking the scenic way home from work. 5. Be aware of your thoughts-when something runs through your mind that you can't do anything about, let it go. All that thinking will cause you to sink lower; you need to rise above things that are not contributing to your happiness. 6. Live for today-realize that you only have right now and make the best of it; yesterday is gone and tomorrow will bring challenges of its own. 7. De-clutter-clean out your junk drawer, tidy up your desk or your closet. When you put external things in order, your mind and heart will also function in a more orderly fashion and that is an especially liberating feeling. 8. Donate-find something that you haven't worn or used in a while that someone else can use; maybe it's a coat, a blanket, or the blue jeans you can't fit into anymore. Make sure they are in good condition; donating old rags is not very helpful or caring. 9. Quit feeling sorry for yourself-even if something legitimate is making you sad, know the true source of the sadness and grow, but an attitude of "poor me" is simply being negative. 10. Set a goal-whether it's exercise, eating better, encouraging your child more ofteneach little step forward will be rewarding. 11. Practice calm-every one of us has hectic days that can unravel us if we let them. Breathe, settle down, and tackle one situation at a time; you'll accomplish more and feel less stressed. 12. Take a quick inventory of things around you that are comforting-the pictures on your desk, the trees on the roadside, the music in your car, the bed on

Smile more-even if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, determine that you will not take negative feelings into your day. Try smiling at yourself in the mirror (and try not to laugh!). 14. Get outside-of the building. The sun has an amazing ability to change our perspective; its warmth can permeate even the grumpiest façade. If it's not a sunny day, take a drive or take a walk in the rain and appreciate its ability to renew and make things grow-including you. 15. Get outside-of yourself. Too much thinking and internalizing can make you dull and self-centered. Lift up your chin and be an overcomer-you really can be happy if you try; and that makes everyone around you happy.

Everyday Spirituality

rowing up, my mother had some great advice. None has stuck with me as strongly as “walk your talk.” Most of the time, her message was the nononsense kind, and this phrase was probably the queen of her belief system. Her message was actually one of a spiritual nature, inviting me to tap into my spiritual self and to act from that place of inner integrity. I now invite each of you to take Mom’s wisdom and live spiritually each day. A few ways to do that are to do the following: 1. Be aware. We humans actually spend a majority of our time thinking about ourselves. We may trick ourselves into believing that we are thinking of others, but the reality is that we are thinking about how others may be affected by us, or how we may be affected by another, or what this person thinks of us, etc. Yet, we lose our awareness of what we are really thinking when we get caught up in these thoughts. Practice being aware of your thoughts, your feelings, your actions. For example, yesterday I spent a good chunk of the day complaining about the distractions in my life rather than actually just working around them. About 3 hours into that, I became aware that I was spending precious time complaining instead of just flowing. Once I had the “ recognition, I was able to get so much more done. 2. Know your triggers. We all have triggers in this culture. We have been wounded and those wounds remain open. When someone touches that gaping wound with a word or an action, that wound begins to throb and burn and we are triggered. We act out of those triggers. I was an incredibly sensitive child and needed a lot of peace around me. I didn’t really get that peace. My mother spent money freely and quickly and my father worked 60+ hours a week to earn that money. Many of his days off were spent arguing with my mother about where the money had gone. The arguments almost always ended in her sobbing and him slamming a door. Even writing about it

everything you ask for, and that is the truth.” It was a hurtful and painful thing to experience for me. But it wasn’t the truth; it was her PAIN. Her truth was more like, “I am angry that I have had a much harder life growing up than you did, and it causes me so much pain to see that you seem to have it so much easier. It doesn’t seem fair to me. And that is MY truth.” There is a huge difference in those statements, on the surface, but underneath they say the same things. There is also a huge difference in how I causes my shoulders to tense, and makes me heard those statements. There is Only One Path

W

hen I first heard of this as a topic for an article I had to stop and think about it for a moment to wrap my head around the concept. Not the concept of everyday spirituality, rather that there was a perspective other than Spirit being not only woven into every aspect of our existence, but that everything in existence is a part of Spirit. As a Shaman it is impossible to separate the creation from the Creator; and, in that awareness spirituality permeates every aspect of my awareness of the world. There is no way that Spirit becomes separated from our everyday interactions, but more that we lose our awareness of this amazing aspect of our experiences. In truth, everything in our lives is a step in a divine dance. Each of us is acting out the situations and circumstances our souls have chosen within this lifetime, and are using our free will to navigate our way through the experience. This alone makes every single thing in existence, every choice, and every action we take, a spiritual experience. The Shamanic path teaches us that every action we take holds a choice within it. We can either do that thing from a purely physical perspective, or we can do that thing for Spirit. By removing the idea that there is separateness we are able to step into a space where our entire life becomes a ritual and celebration of Spirit. When we see ourselves as one with the Divine we elevate even the simplest of actions into a grand ceremony. How could it be otherwise? Think about it. You are a soul residing within a body. How could anything you do not be an act of Spirit? So, sing for Spirit. Love for Spirit. Work for Spirit. Clean your house for Spirit. Go to the gym for Spirit. Scramble eggs for Spirit. In all you do, do it with the awareness that you are a limitless part of Spirit, and that your Soul's journey and expression matter in every single moment. Within this awareness you begin to realize that in every action you take you are either doing something to your Soul, or for your Soul. In this moment all of your choices become simple. Do not fall into the trap of wondering what your path is, or where it lies. You are

standing in the middle of it right now. There is only one path and it leads back home for all of us. It is this physical existence that our souls have chosen. Everything is part of Spirit: Everything that you are, everything that you experience, everything that you do. Let yourself live within this knowing constantly, and you will change the very world around you. This is the path of conscious living, and the key to lasting joy. Beyond this, begin to see everything else as an equal part of Spirit, and you will further change your interaction with the world around you. By honoring every individual, including their choices, as a part of the Divine you honor the truth of Spirit itself. It is all things. You do not have to like, or even participate in the actions others choose, but you will benefit yourself greatly by accepting that they too are a part of Spirit, and that everything they do holds equal value as your own choices. There is a freedom in this awareness, and a responsibility. Know that all you do and all you are is a part of Spirit. Accept this truth for others as well. By doing this you will elevate every thing you do into an act of everyday spirituality.

Path Walker’s Creed I honor and respect myself fully just as I am. Though I may wish to change certain aspects of my life I choose to value where I am here and now. I vow to do my best in all situations and promise to value my efforts as much as my results. I will balance strength of will with gentleness of understanding in all areas of my life. I will see the best in every situation. I will contribute to that best. I vow to show myself to the World. My voice will rise into harmony with the choir of Spirit. I will hold gratitude for everything that I experience, everything I am, everything that is. I have decided to be happy.

Meditation Instead of Medication Using Tibetan Thanatology and Empathy to Work with Children Who Have ADHD

B

ased on 800 years of observations, Tibetan thanatology (the science of death and dying) offers the most accurate analysis of what happens when death approaches, and how the mind and perceptions begin to change. The Tibetans saw how empathy increases in those who near death, as the senses, which process information, gradually “turn themselves off.” This process of “moving-on” makes the dying more permeable and more susceptible to outside influence. These observations gave rise to a number of insights on how to deal with the dying; giving caregivers specific instructions that have been maintained over the centuries. Caregivers — who occupy a very important position — can support the transition by attaining and deliberately maintaining, through meditative techniques, an empathic state of great strength and peace. This has a great influence on the dying because of their highly permeable state. If the caregivers are very serene, the dying will also become serene, just as they can become tense or anxious when the caregivers are so. Now you might wonder what Tibetan thanatology has to do with children that suffer from ADHD, and why a thanatologist, who is more familiar with the other end of life, would write about children in severe

emotional distress. It is because children are very empathic, just like those who are close to death. Children with ADHD lack the capacity for focused attention. This prevents them from receiving much of the instruction sent their way. But since they are children, they are highly empathic, and this makes them open, just like a person at the end of life, to receive or directly absorb what is around them, including the state of their parents, teachers, and caregivers. A well trained adult, capable of acting from a state of peace that has been cultivated appropriately through meditation, will enable the child to feel their peace, and to experience it in a direct, nonmediated way.

How does this happen? Even if it is more noticeable at the beginning and end of life, empathy is strongly and naturally present in each and every one of us: it is a characteristic of human nature and also of other species that rely on the empathic cohesion of the group for survival. As humans, we have the capacity to learn how to cultivate empathic communication, and use it at will to support and advance our

relationships. Tibetan thanatology guides caregivers to develop — through several meditation techniques — a special quality and way of listening to the dying that emanates from a deep state of peace. Traditionally, the way the caregivers are — their capacity for active listening and

Feature

presence — is considered even more important than what they do and say. Cultivating this capacity of deep listening replaces the ordinary dualistic, judging pattern of the human mind, based on the separation between subject and object: in a sense, the caregiver becomes better at “connecting with” either the dying or the children with ADHD, by sharing their preferred communication style.

Meditation and the Brain Neuroscience studies on trained practitioners have shown that meditation enhances empathic skills and allows a deep state of peace to appear, not only during the meditation sessions but also post-meditation. This is due to the effect of meditation training on the capacity of our brain to change. We aim to enhance empathic skills in adults, as well as to allow them to keep a deep state of peace in the presence of ADHD children, no matter how these children behave.

Personal Experience My contact with ADHD children comes from having been asked, as a thanatologist, to support bereavement in a class where a teacher or a child had passed away. I usually bring with me a team of

caregivers, well trained in meditation, who have a strong and quiet presence, as well as a highly cultivated capacity of listening. The intention is to create the right environment so that bereavement can be addressed in an empathic way. In many classrooms these days, there are children who suffer from ADHD. I began to observe the impact this state especially had on them and realized that this was probably the first time some ADHD children had truly experienced peace. It was from this insight and experience that I began to develop a very light, but continuous training for the teachers and children, that in some circumstances became part of the daily class program. Once these children had a direct experience of deep peace and compassion they were motivated to receive further guidance. More specialized meditations gave them a chance to develop peace, compassion and loving-kindness themselves, which slowly transformed their brain and their relational life into a fuller, calmer and happier one.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) — Life wants to open your heart to more prosperity, love and intimacy. As Mercury retrogrades, meditate on old hurts and disappointments that keep you shut down or cautious. Ponder limiting beliefs you want to release. Use the power of your imagination to envision positive future situations. You are spiritually powerful, and are actually creating a new reality! But first clear out the old to make room for the new.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) — Confused about career or life purpose? Meditate on activities that make you truly joyful. Create affirmations or a vision board about those things. Share your passion with spiritual friends. Just by sending that

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) — Making commitments scares for you. Remember you’re not limiting your options, but opening to a deep treasure trove of possibilities that’s richer than what’s on the surface! A relationship can

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) — Even though you’re positive for others, you’re cynical about your own life. So much fulfillment awaits you in relationships, health, prosperity and peace of mind. What’s keeping you from accepting your divine good? Meditate to release old hurts. Forgiveness heals and re-shapes your world view so you’re open to the blessings and good karma that are yours for the taking! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) — Part of why you incarnated as Pisces was to master fear! Be grateful for spiritual people in your life who remind you of your strength and courage. Meditate about creating serenity in your home — having a sacred space; safe boundaries around communication, etc. Being peaceful empowers you to crush your negative thinking. You’ll also be able to

shield yourself from domineering people (it’s their fear dressed up as control). Aries (March 21 – April 19) — Do you have negative beliefs about God or religion? Maybe you have unhealed ideas about God being harsh and judgmental, which cause you to rebel and struggle against authority figures like bosses, family members or even your spouse. Seek out nurturing spiritual images that soothe your internal warrior. The Universe is on your side, encouraging you toward greatness, not keeping you from it!
