Dear Friend,

Contents

What is gratitude, really, but a thought? By changing my thoughts, I am able to change my reality of an experience. Gratitude, and the resulting abundance, is merely a thought that creates a reality. We can choose our thinking— one of grace, or gratitude—and create a new, better, more abundant, reality.

3

Overcoming Fear

Don Miguel Ruiz said, “Be impeccable with your word,” because a thought is our Word—and the way we speak to ourselves and the Universe has the power to create a joy-filled, abundant, life. Abundance is a state of mind, directly linked to my level of gratitude. I believe true abundance stems from an attitude of gratitude—and there is always something for which we can show gratitude.

13

The Spiritual Practice of Gratitude

There is so much good available to everyone. Even during times of adversity, I find strength and true abundance by acknowledging, cherishing, and being thankful for all that is right in my life. Or, as Rumi said, “Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.” This month we honor gratitude and abundance with the articles throughout the magazine, as well as with our Holiday Gift Guide. Included in the Gift Guide are unique, inspirational, and nontraditional gift ideas for the holiday season. Please support your local merchants while delighting friends and family with these wonderful gift suggestions—or treat yourself with the gift of self-care.

Journey to Wholeness

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.

n Macbeth, Shakespeare says, “Sleep that knits up the raveled sleeve of care…balm of hurt minds…chief nourisher in life’s feast.” Sleep can be restorative, healthy and life giving. But what happens when our Circadian Cycle (24 hour) is disturbed? Or when the Ultradian Cycle (90-120 minute) is interrupted or dysfunctional? Many researchers tells us that as many as one third of the United States population suffers from different sleep disturbances. Many of the people I see report sleep problems and may also be suffering from depression and anxiety. It is important to look at the multiple possible causes and effects of sleep interruption. Let’s look at some of the symptoms you may be having if you are having poor, unrestful or insufficient sleep; yawning, moodiness, fatigue, irritability, depressed mood, difficulty learning new concepts, forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, lack of motivation, clumsiness, increased appetite and carbohydrate cravings, reduced sex drive, poor impulse control, or less empathy.

I hope this bad news will convince you to think seriously about getting better sleep. Here are some ways to help you with that determination: Declutter your house, block light and noise, embrace short naps, eat more fiber, learn some Cognitive Behavioral Approaches to assist you (e.g., relaxation, stress and trauma reducing exercises, imagery, and positive reframes of negative thinking), drink less caffeine, exercise frequently and early in the day, fix relationship issues, and get a better mattress! Find the causes of your sleep deprivation. Find the remedies that help you. Get help along the way. Find practitioners who use integrative approaches. Don’t forget how helpful homeopathy, acupuncture, reflexology, and other forms of bodywork can be. Check your nutrition plan. Make a good self-care checklist. 5 Simple Basics for Healthy Skin A guide for the rest of us BY ANGELA WATSON ROBERTSON

M

ost of us would like to have healthy, glowing, youthful, and clear skin. Yet, with so many products out there and experts telling us what to do and not to do to take care of our skin— how do we know what to do? It can be overwhelming and expensive to do everything you hear—eat this way not that way, get expensive skin treatments monthly, avoid the sun at all costs, and lather dozen of skin products on yourself each morning and night. Sheesh! I’m wiped out just writing about it. As a health coach and nutrition expert, I always advise my clients to keep it simple. Plus, I’m a new mom and I don’t have time to do all those things. The truth is you don’t have to. You can keep things simple and easy and also take care of your skin. Save the expensive treatments and intense daily regimen for the movie stars. If you’re like the rest of us, and you want to feel and look healthy and vibrant in a simple way and on a budget, here are a few things you should know.

Simple Basics for Healthy Skin

Earth you’re going to be exposed to some level of toxicity. Our body is designed to detoxify in several ways—one of these ways is through sweating. It’s important to sweat often so you can clean out your skin. Try a hot yoga class, jogging, walking, or a high intensity interval training (HIIT) class and move your body daily. Many people find that if they go to a hot yoga class regularly they don’t get as much acne or have body odor--bonus! 5. Supplement your diet.

“Skin health is more about what you put in your body than what you put on your body.” for the next two weeks and keep on eye on how your skin changes for the better. I recommend that everyone drink at least half their body weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weigh 150 pounds you should be drinking 75 ounces of purified water each day. 2. Eat organic, real foods.

Skin health is more about what you put in your body than what you put on your body. So, your diet and nutrition is super 1. Drink more water. important. I recommend you eat organic, real foods for several reasons. First, it’s important to I know, duh, right? But you’d be surprised how many of us don’t reduce your exposure to toxins in drink enough water or decide not your environment and your food. to because we don’t like the taste. Eating organically will help with This is the single most important this. If your body is toxic it will start to come out in your skin and thing you can do for your health will decrease cell turnover (which right now—and it’s easy and cheap! If you want to feel better— is needed for healthy, youthfullooking skin). I define “real” food learn to like water and start as food in its natural state. So eat drinking purified, high-quality food that looks like it does when it water. You can do this! comes out of the ground or off the Your body is made up of close tree. It’s as simple as that. with as few ingredients as possible. 3. Moisturize! As I age, I’ve come to realize that healthy and beautiful skin is hydrated skin. So we must moisturize daily. Yet, I don’t recommend you put just anything on your skin. Find a daily moisturizer that doesn’t have all the gunk in it. There are a lot of organic products on the market with simple ingredients. It depends on your personal skin type and your sensitivity level as to what works for you. I love all of Aveda and Origins products, but you can find some great ones at Target and Ulta as well. Just read the ingredients and do some research. Another option is to use oils like emu oil. I apply emu oil morning and night under my moisturizer as an added boost for my skin. 4. Sweat often. Even if you eat well and avoid toxins in your food and skincare products, if you live on planet

Even if you eat a balanced and healthy, organic diet, it’s very likely that you still are missing some key nutrients. This is due to the reduced soil quality in our current environment and modern farming methods. At a minimum, I recommend you take a highquality multivitamin daily that is high in vitamins A, C, E, D, K, B3, B5, Choline, and Folate (folic acid or Methylfolate). These all help with skin health. Start working these simple strategies into your daily routine and you’ll find your skin will respond in positive ways.

Say Grace BY BRANDI SHOEN & EMILY AKINS

A

t this time of year the talk of gratitude is as thick in the air as pumpkin spice. And though we do love a good pumpkin spice latte, sometimes we wonder just why modern food developers are putting pumpkin flavor into ALL THE THINGS. It’s probably safe to assume that “no pumpkins were harmed in the making of this latte.” Or muffin, or wine, or candy bar.

There is usually a dog or cat in the background adding to the chaos. So maybe we’re not entirely graceful, but we try to be grateful. Those dirty dishes piled in the sink means that we have full bellies and a full table. There’s also grace as in a “grace period”—an extended period of time that allows someone to catch up - to be a little bit late, but with forgiveness. We could all use a grace period—time to catch up with the things that matter most and to remember what we’re grateful for. Maybe even time to spend preparing a meal of hearty and healthy food that was grown close to home - and sharing it with the ones we love the most.

You know what else is pumpkin flavored? Actual pumpkins. And when the pumpkins arrive at the farmers market, that’s when you know that autumn has finally arrived! Following closely behind come all the fall things; drinking apple cider, visiting the pumpkin patch, and unearthing cozy boots and flannel shirts from the back of the closet. We believe that the changing season is the perfect time to contemplate the passing of another year. Reminiscing about times past over a bonfire? Yes please! It’s one of the reasons we love this time of year. Well, and of course, the food! Traditionally, this is a time of harvest. It’s funny that we say “traditionally,” as though it were an old way of life. For the farmers in and around Kansas City, attention to the changing seasons isn’t an old way of life. It’s just … life. Regardless of how modern we’ve all gotten, the weather (though unpredictable in the Midwest, now more than ever) will turn cold. Plants will quit growing or at least will grow dormant for a season. Those last harvests will come in from the cold. And this is the harvest that we’re meant to be so grateful for. The hearty storage crops like sweet potatoes, apples, onions,

Saying “grace” or just feeling grateful reminds us of our friends, family and the food on our table (including that PS latte!) Our Farmer BFFs work so hard to grow great food, and their hard work means the best food for us, for our community, and our earth. That’s something we can all feel grateful for ... especially at Thanksgiving.

Wisdom Within

Can You Trust These Words? “I Love You” BY SUZETTE SCHOLTES

I

wrote about this topic a few years back, but it became so popular I will share again with a few newer insights. It’s about the great Hawaiian healer “Ho’oponopono. The story goes that authorities placed the most hardened criminals off to the side of the big island. They were the worst-of-the -worst: psychotic, criminallyinsane, and considered hopeless humans for their horrific deeds of murder, torture, and violence. Every prison guard assigned to these men could not tolerate being in the prison with them for more than a few days. The warden noticed that one young guard did not quit. He asked why. The guard knew the great Khuhana, who had offered to help these men. The warden sought out the Khuhana who asked for photos of the 30 or so men. Each day for 30 days, sometimes twice, he looked at each photo and repeated the mantra: “I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. May all good come to you. I bless you. Thank you.” As the story goes, each of the hardened criminals rehabilitated. They moved back into society, functioning as contributing and responsible citizens. It is my new mantra: “I Love You. I’m Sorry. Please Forgive me. May all good come to you. Thank you.” In my world, love makes love safe. Love means I consciously will NOT hurt you with my words, deeds, or actions. Love is responsible, vulnerable, trusting, caring, sharing while giving “respect” to the other. It vibrates at the highest level of human emotion thus is the most powerful force on Earth. This “saying” or “tune” or energy comes from the Hooponopono Hawaiian art which says we prosper by taking 100 percent responsibility for ourselves. That includes our success, opportunities, happiness, sadness, anxiety, ego, manipulations, control issues, addictions, and problems or

challenges. The name ho'oponopono is the mantra; "I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. May all good come to you. Thank you." By saying this in a sincere way many times to those who have hurt or upset you, you clear memories. If challenged—for example, money flow worries—say to yourself: "I accept responsibility for having limited money. There is something inside me causing this challenge.” To your own heart, mind, and spirit direct: “I am sorry, I love you, and please forgive me. All good now flows to me. Thank you." Repeat again and again to clear memories or feelings which may restrict the flow of prosperity. Or clear anything: old hurts, relationships, health, grief, anxiety, and fear.

The four steps: Step 1: Repentance– I’M SORRY You are responsible for everything in your mind, even if it seems to be “out there.” Once you realize that, it’s very natural to feel sorry. I know I sure do. This realization can be painful, and you will likely resist accepting responsibility for the “out there” kind of problems until you start to

practice this method on your more obvious “in here” problems and see results. So choose something that you already know you’ve caused for yourself? Over-weight? Addicted to nicotine, alcohol, or some other substance? Do you have anger issues? Health problems? Start there and say you’re sorry. That’s the whole step: I’M SORRY. Although I think it is more powerful if you say it more clearly: “I realize that I am responsible for the (issue) in my life, and I feel terrible remorse that something in my consciousness has caused this.”

Step 2: Ask Forgiveness— PLEASE FORGIVE ME Don’t worry about who you’re asking. Just ask! PLEASE FORGIVE ME. Say it over and over. Mean it. Remember your remorse from step 1 as you ask to be forgiven. Step 3: Gratitude— THANK YOU Say “THANK YOU” again. It doesn’t really matter whom or what you’re thanking. Thank your body for all it does for you. Thank yourself for being the best you can be. Thank God. Thank the Universe. Thank whatever it was

EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM

that just forgave you. Just keep saying THANK YOU. Step 4: Love— I LOVE YOU Say I LOVE YOU. Say it to your body, say it to God. Say I LOVE YOU to the air you breathe, to the house that shelters you. Say I LOVE YOU to your challenges. Say it over and over. Mean it. Feel it. There is nothing as powerful as Love. That’s it. The whole practice in a nutshell. Simple and amazingly effective. Kansas City Healing Project Cancer patient support with energy healing BY JOHN HOEFER

E

ach year there are about 9,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in the Kansas City area, with about 3,300 cancer-related deaths per year per statistics from the National Cancer Institute. With this number of illnesses and death’s it is a serious health issue in the area. Most likely, we all know one or more of people who are dealing with cancer, the treatments, as well as the side effects of the treatments. Both my dad and step mom died from multiple cancers and I saw the effect it took on them as they navigated the traditional treatments of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. I was inspired to find a way to utilize my three years of training at the Core Star Energy Healing School and my practice as an energy healer to assist the Kansas City area cancer patients with reducing the pain and suffering they were having. As a result, the 501©3 Kansas City Healing Project was organized to provide energy healing services by myself and fellow Core Star graduates for cancer patients. We have also expanded the services to include veterans.

Overcoming Fear By understanding and transforming our fears, we open the channels to a new paradigm for living BY LYSA ALLMAN-BALDWIN

A

nxiety. Panic attacks. Angst. These are all symptoms that lead to fear. And when allowed to run your life, fear can be crippling—mind, body, and spirit. You’ve no doubt heard the oft repeated definition of Fear: “False Evidence Appearing Real.” Or perhaps, “Future Events Already Ruined.” Both point to conjuring up troubling, if not worse, situations in our minds that don’t actually exist. And if we follow along these trains of thought, we can shut down, become immobile, and lose the ability to clearly see things for what they really are in any given situation. But once we understand the root and function of fear, we gain an essential tool to overcome our fears and chart a new conscious paradigm for living. What is Fear? According to author, public speaker, alternative medicine advocate, and prominent figure in the New Age movement Deepak Chopra in his article, Fear Not: Better Ways to Deal with Anxiety, “Modern life brings more stress than ever, and a natural reaction to stress is anxiety. It’s a multidimensional response that originates, physically speaking, in the lower brain, where the fight-or -flight response resides, an inheritance shared by almost all animals.”

The Spiritual Practice of Gratitude BY BEN JAMISON

I

t is common around this time of year to start thinking again about gratitude. Typically, we feel grateful throughout the year randomly when circumstances line up just right, so that gratitude gets to sneak in. Then Thanksgiving rolls around, and we put a little more attention on gratitude for a short while before falling back into experiencing gratitude once in a while. Gratitude as a spiritual practice, however, is something that we can consciously engage and experience. A daily practice of gratitude has the power to shift our perspective on life and bring more joy and appreciation to our experience. Gratitude is an activator. As we practice gratitude, we align and open ourselves to the divine flow of abundance. Feeling grateful is, to put it simply, much better than the alternative. But, it can be difficult to experience gratitude when life gets rough. That’s why it’s a practice. The more we practice gratitude, the more natural it will be for us to experience gratitude. Eventually it will become a habit, and we will much more naturally focus on gratitude all the time. So, how do we practice? There are a great many gratitude practices out there, and I’d like to share a few of my favorites with you. Regardless of the gratitude practice itself, the how of the practice is vitally important. Gratitude should be fun! It should be energizing and uplifting, bring a smile to your face, and goose your energy up a notch. If you notice your gratitude practice feeling like drudgery, something you “have to” do but aren’t inspired by, ditch that gratitude practice and find another! Only gratitude freely and joyfully given and experienced will be beneficial. Gratitude that comes from obligation really isn’t gratitude at all and will have the opposite effect of what we’re seeking.

This will allow you to forget about time and just focus on gratitude. Begin by focusing as close in to yourself as possible and start listing gratitudes. Start simple. “I’m grateful for this breath. I’m grateful for my eyes that allow me to read this article. I’m grateful for my willingness to grow spiritually.” Intentionally bring the feeling of gratitude into your mind and body and stack gratitude upon gratitude. Move out to bigger and broader things. “I’m grateful for my family. I’m grateful for the beautiful sky.” Go as quickly and powerfully as you can, storming your mind and body with experiences of gratitude, stacking the feeling of appreciation from each gratitude you list upon those you’ve already noted. Get as big and broad and powerfully grateful as you can before your timer goes off. At first, this might be difficult to get going. You’ll be starting small, so the feelings of gratitude may be small at first. That’s okay. It might also take you a minute to really get rolling with listing your gratitudes. That is okay too. The more you practice, the easier it will be, the grander your gratitudes will be, and the more of The Gratitude Storm them you’ll discover. Bring Your Sensible Body to the Celebration BY ANN TODHUNTER BRODE

W

ith so many distractions, temptations, and expectations, it’s hard to stay centered & present for the holidays. It’s way too easy to over commit, over indulge and be consumed by consumption. More often than not, this ends up, year after year, in exhaustion and disappointment. You know how it goes. From the gathering & feasting of Thanksgiving to the holiday parties & traditions of December, a little indulgence leads to more and more. Before you know, your body and mind are side-tracked on a runaway train to the New Year. Why not try something new this year? Instead of losing your mind in the midst of all the seductions of the season, be mindful of your body. Invite this body- mindfulness to come along with you and listen to your comfort level. From your body’s point of view, being sensible means taking a break when you’re tired, setting limits graciously, and committing to conscious moderation. Being sensible also means showing up with all your senses to partake of the delightsconvivial gatherings, a festive market place, traditional music/ decoration, and seasonal entertainment. Like anything you ingest, your body has to digest the holiday fare. No matter how delightful it iscrowding your calendar, taking on too many obligations, having unreasonable expectations, keeping late hours, buying beyond your budget or even socializing too much- can put you over the edge. Then, you feel out of sorts,

anxious, tense, spaced out, and just plain tired. Remember, too much of anything can result in sensory overload. Let’s take the obvious example of food. Yes, abundant offerings of delicious holiday foods are part of the celebration but quality and quantity are what counts. Being aware of what and how much you ingest means you can enjoy the pleasure without suffering the exhaustion, bloating, and headache of a food hangover. In other words, you can have your cake and eat it too if you have just one piece. As you approach the season ahead, keeping your sensible body in mind will help you make good choices, enjoy them thoroughly, and back away when satiated. As Julia Childs used to say: “Everything in moderation…. Even excess!” Here are some ways to invite your sensible body to the celebration:  Savor the Flavor. When you’re in feasting mode, be present in the moment and thoroughly enjoy the presentation and gustatory delight of each offering.  Take a deep breath. Ninety percent of the taste is sourced in the smell. Aroma is also linked to memory and emotion. Let the smells of roasted nuts, cinnamon and pastry be a reminder of the sweetness in life.

Slow down. Linger a bit. Take time to chew every morsel, letting the experience of richness pass over your taste buds, over and over. Beyond getting the most from each delicious bite, chewing thoroughly is the first step of digestion and experts suggest we eat less when we chew more. Less is more- Palate fatigue happens with foods as well as wine. It’s the first couple of bites that really taste good and overdoing it doesn’t give more pleasure. It just makes your body feel dull, bloated and unhappy. Pay attention- When your belly says it’s had enough, don’t ignore it. Remember, if you tip the balance to overindulgence, it won’t really be fun anymore and you’ll pay the price later. Watch the sugar- If you have an eggnog before dinner and plan to have a brandy afterwards, pass on the pecan pie. Notice how even a moderate indulgence leaves you looking for another sweet bit the next day. Instead of caving, back it off with a carrot or apple. Take time to digest. The rule of thumb is to allow two or three hours before bedtime for digestion.

Ann Todhunter Brode has been an Aston Patterning practitioner and bodyoriented therapist in Santa Barbara for over forty years. In addition to her clinical practice, Brode shares her personal and professional experience through down-to-earth, compassionate articles on the challenges & rewards of living consciously in the body. Her recently completed book, A Guide to Body Wisdom- What Your Mind Needs to Know About Your Body (Llewellyn Worldwide) will be available June, 2018. More information can be found EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM at https://www.llewellyn.com

Every bullet point above not only applies to eating but to anything you do for the holidays. Remember to savor the beauty, slow down to breathe it all in, consume moderately, listen to your body, and digest the experience. Let your sensible body indulge all the joys of the season- the traditional treats, the warm glow of candlelight, the sounds of holiday music, and the good feeling of joyful laughter- as well as the food. You may find that just like your sense of taste is satiated after a few bites of cake, your sense of pleasure may be fulfilled with small doses of shopping, partying, and entertainment. To be honest, being bodymindful through the holidays is a challenging assignment. Old behaviors, triggered emotions, holiday distractions, and peer pressure may undermine your resolve every once in a while. If so, you could find yourself back on the runaway train to over-indulgence. When this happens, you can count on your sensible body to give you some feedback. At some point, you’ll come to your senses again and ask “do I feel centered, refreshed, and present” or “am I uncomfortable, restless, and depleted?” Listen in and make the connection. It’s a simple quid pro quo. Like any physical malady, if you’re not feeling good, you’re out of balance. Try grandma’s remedy: rest, fast, peace and quiet. Perhaps, this is the time to schedule in a nice bath or walk in nature to recharge your energy and recoup your resolve. So, this year, bring your sensible body to the celebration and have a truly Happy Holiday!

Gratitude for Discomfort: Enjoying the Abundance of What You Never Knew You Wanted BY CLEMENTINE MITCHELL

othing creates a sense of happiness and ease quite like gratitude. This time of year we tend to visit what we’re grateful for more often than usual. Has it ever occurred to you to be grateful for the gift of discomfort? It might just change your life! Discomfort is not usually the quality of experience we associate with gratitude. Most of the time, we exacerbate discomfort by our reactions to it rather than having any appreciation of what it can contribute to our lives. We tend to add entangling layers such as frustration, blame, worry, anger, judgment, and more. What if discomfort could actually be a gift? What if it was even pleasurable?
