Dear Friend,

Contents

How do you know when you’re on a sacred journey? For me, I feel a lightness of heart, a playfulness, a sense of possibility that I previously confused with fear. Sacred journeys, while often an actual trip to a sacred site, are also, and just as importantly, an inner adventure of the soul. As wives and mothers and caretakers, we women often spend a large portion of our lives taking care of others. Then when/if we find ourselves independent and self-sufficient, we sometimes go to the other extreme of self-care that some, especially those we previously took care of (or who wish to retain a codependent relationship), label as selfish. Completely immersing ourselves in discovering and fulfilling our needs, our wants, our desires—although it may appear selfish—is a necessary step to taking a sacred journey; and you may find that after years of self-less-ness, the joy of self-ful-ness is intoxicating. So when you start a Sacred Journey of self-discovery and care, you may hear statements like, “...but you used to be so humble...” or, “You’re so self-absorbed.” These comments, intended to draw you back into the relationship through guilt, can make you feel like a riptide is trying to pull you back to the helplessness of the ocean. But if you stay focused and strong you can swim against the pull of other people’s fear. Because all they really want is for the relationship to keep its same dynamic. With time, you’ll find these people who need to keep you absorbed in their problems will lose interest and eventually fall away. When I was embroiled in codependent relationships I found myself unable to make decisions. Frequently I wrote in my journal, “What do I want to do—right now?” Such a simple question, but one that I struggled with before I found inner strength. Neuroscience research has found that one of the keys to happiness is the ability to make decisions. So I know I’m not alone when I say that by seeking self-sufficiency and learning to make decisions, I also found happiness. I hope you’ll also pursue your personal sacred journeys, those within and without.

Wisdom Within

The True Promise of Yoga—to Become Happy BY SUZETTE SCHOLTES

T

he eights steps of yoga teach us to become more awake, aware, aligned, and filled with intention. The eight steps of yoga, in a nutshell, are 1. Yama or moral principles such as non-violence, 2. Niyama or self-purification by discipline, 3. Asana or the poses of yoga, 4. Pranayama or breath control, 5. Pratyahara or sense withdrawal to pacify the mind, 6. Dharana or focused concentration, 7. Dhyana or meditation, and 8. Samadhi or state of happiness felt in the heart. I feel there are many reasons some choose to come to us, but probably the most common is “stress reduction.” Not all students want more than yoga poses, but if the student remains consistent, often they do wish to learn to breathe with more awareness and maybe learn to meditate. Ask these questions of yourself to foster new enthusiasm and trust in the process of learning and growing with yoga or related modalities:  Do you leave your class or mat ready for a nap or ready for new plans, new ideas, and new dreams?  Are you refreshed?  Do you get in your car after yoga and crank out at the traffic or are you serene and composed?  Do you look forward to seeing your family and friends or colleagues or are you irritated by duties and obligations?

thoughts are constantly affecting our momentto-moment energy. Patanjali talks a lot about attachments such as lust, ignorance, lethargy, laziness, or dullness. I prefer the psychological approach to understand our negative ego: Are we struggling? Are we in pity? Are we comparing ourselves always to others without a sense of ourselves? Do we always doubt? Are we stuck so deep in our martyrdom and blame we cannot find optimism and hope? Do we feel better than another? Do we feel less than another? Do we fear more than trust? Yes. We are all so tenderly human. Yet until we recognize what is in our own thoughts/ feelings, we are stuck. The worst? The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life BY NANCY RUSSELL, M.D.

P

lans for a healthier life require several unique ingredients for success. It takes more than making a resolution, more than willpower and more than persistence. In the book, The Daniel Plan by Rick Warren, D. Min. and two functional medicine physicians, Mark Hyman, M.D. and Daniel Amen, M.D. present such a plan. It is based on five principlesFaith, Food, Fitness, Focus, and Friends. Food intake is very controversial in our world today. Shall I choose to be vegetarian, vegan vegetarian, Paleo, Paleoketo, ketogenic with intermittent fasting or even others? It can be mind-boggling. In The Daniel Plan, whatever program you lean towards, fill your plate with at least 50 percent vegetables. Vegetables are very underutilized at most American dinner tables. The Plan advises fresh, whole foods instead of processed foods. Choose fresh or frozen vegetables over canned. Drink plenty of filtered water. Cut out sugars, white flour and artificial sweeteners. Stop night time eating and bingeing. “The beauty of adding foods that heal and nourishes and satisfies you deeply is that it will almost effortlessly shift your body and mind into a different state—a state where your cravings are gone, where your willpower is not needed because you naturally crave what makes you thrive and feel good. Think of food as medicine, that real food has the power to create a healthy life, and exactly what foods you can eat for the most powerful life-giving energy. It is time to have a look at what we have been eating that we thought was food, but isn’t and how to avoid life-robbing, disease -promoting, obesity-inducing food. A 40-day meal plan complete with recipes are included in The Daniel Plan. The way to make these incredible changes requires faith and friends. Any life change is more easily mastered with the support of your faith and likeminded friends on your journey. Faith is the foundation of the

Daniel Plan. With God’s love, grace and power, your trust in Him is the key to lasting change. What you think determines the way you feel. What you feel determines the way you act. Part of staying focused is being able to develop mastery over the quality of your thoughts. Thoughts can lie. It is often your uninvestigated thoughts that drive depression, anxiety, fear, and overeating that derail progress toward better health. Leading health and wellness organizations, such as the American College of Sports Medicine have discovered that moving your body, even just a little bit on a regular basis impacts not only your physical health, but also your intellectual, emotional, social, financial, and spiritual health. We are designed to move. When we are fit, our bodies, minds, and relationships work better, and we have the potential, resilience and strength to be all we were designed to be. Exercise is the best strategy to increase energy, improve muscular strength, tone, and endurance, make you happier, reduce stress, anxiety and depression, look and feel years

younger, manage weight and decrease body fat, increase productivity, stimulate creativity, sharpen focus, promote restful sleep, enhance intimacy and relationships, strengthen bones, make you smarter, enhance immune function, increase joint mobility, improve posture, and treat and prevent more than forty chronic diseases. So many advantages!! Just do it!! Move it!! Decision making is a brain function. One of the most important parts of the focus essential is to know your motivation, or why you must get healthy. You can have solid faith, healthy food choices and plenty of exercise and still sabotage your health. The potential saboteur is your brain as mental health is vital for your overall health. When your brain works right, you work right. When your brain is healthy, your ability to focus increases and leads to better decisions. Discipline your mind to have accurate, honest thoughts and bring your attention each day to those things for which you are grateful. When you consistently focus on your blessings and what you are grateful for each day, it has a positive effect on your

physical and mental health. Gratitude even helps your brain work better. Lastly, after learning about food, exercise, focus and always remembering your faith, the secret sauce is friends to bring it all together. When it comes to your health, everyone needs a buddy; the word ‘support’ literally means to increase one another’s potential. Consider what your journey toward whole health would be like if you did it in a community. Research shows that people getting healthy together lose twice as much weight as those who do it alone. Success increases when you are connected with others, receiving constant encouragement to stay focused and motivated toward your goals. How to Limit Gluten From Your Diet (and still enjoy your food!) BY ANGELA WATSON ROBERTSON

I

’m often asked how I’ve managed to follow a glutenfree diet for so many years, and I often say that it can be inconvenient at times, but it’s actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I have to strictly avoid gluten for health and medical reasons, but even if that’s not the case for you, chances are you will feel better if you limit it from your diet. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not the type of health coach that will say that bread (or gluten or wheat) is bad for everyone or that it’s unhealthy. Yet, after years of nutrition coaching, I’ve started to see the trend that most of us could benefit from less bread (and thus less gluten) in our bellies. Many people report feeling less bloated, less gassy, thinking more clearly, and having cleaner skin after reducing gluten and bread products from their diet. So, if you’ve been looking for a few tips to get started living gluten -free, or if you’re needing some fresh ideas to eat in a more healthy way, I’ve outlined a few tips below to help you eat three meals a day the gluten-free way.

Breakfast

Gluten-Free Waffles (Vegan) Ingredients: 1 1/4 cup unsweetened almond (or preferred non-dairy) milk + 1 tsp white or apple cider vinegar. 1/4 cup melted coconut oil. 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup gluten-free rolled oats 1 3/4 cups gluten-free flour blend 1 1/2 tsp baking powder. pinch sea salt 1. Combine wet ingredients in blender. 2. Add dry ingredients. 3. Blend until combined. 4. Let sit while waffle iron heats. 5. Cook according to waffle iron instructions.

“After years of nutrition coaching, I’ve started to see the trend that most of us could benefit from less bread (and thus less gluten) in our bellies.”

eat tacos every night for dinner. Another great option that is easy to make gluten-free is soup or stew. Most soups or stews consist of veggies, broth, spices, and some type of protein. Easy peasy! Come up with your own variations, or check out my favorite Mexican chicken chowder recipe on my website to get you started. Once you’ve had a few meals without relying on bread as a main course, you’ll see that it’s easy to enjoy your food and fill yourself up without the gluten products. Most people report that after a couple of weeks eating gluten-free Dinner they no longer crave bread and Make it a taco night. If you can have a hard time going back to tolerate corn, okay. Swap out flour their old way of eating. Regardless tortillas for organic corn tortillas if you decide to remove gluten (try to get non-gmo corn products from your diet entirely from here Lunch if you can). Avoiding corn? Try on out or simply decide to limit it Most Americans are used to a lettuce cup tacos which are super for a short period of time, you’ll sandwich or burger for lunch. And yummy. Tacos are easy to make at benefit from the change. why not- they are yummy! Many home, and you can fill them up restaurants now offer gluten-free with whatever your family likes. buns for burgers or sandwiches, Now I know you don’t want to In our culture, breakfast often consists of cereal, donuts, toast, muffins, or some type of breakfast sandwich. That is a lot of bread (and sugar) and not the best way to start off your day. Instead, have a smoothie for breakfast. It’s easy and quick to make, and you can drink it on your way to work. Toss in your favorite greens, fruits, nut milk, and protein powder and blend it up. If you need a bit more protein for breakfast, or are craving something hot, make a scrambled pasture-raised egg and a couple organic turkey sausage patties to pair with your smoothie.

but they often don’t taste great. Regardless if you have to avoid gluten for health or medical reasons, those buns will still leave you feeling bloated or gassy. Instead, ask for greens. Many restaurants will give you a sandwich or burger “on greens” or wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun. So try your grass-fed beef burger on a lettuce bun or get your BLT on greens. You will still get all the good protein without the bloat.

The Best of Both Worlds at the Farmers Market BY BRANDI SCHOEN AND EMILY AKINS

A

s we approach Labor Day we say goodbye to summer fun and start welcoming the fall. This might mean changing our schedule as we head back to school with kids or changing our wardrobe as we fish out a sweater or two. But fortunately for us here in the Kansas City area, it does not mean we have to change the way we eat. The growing season in our region is long and our farmers markets keep us well-fed well into the fall. For locavores and foodies, this is a “best of both worlds” time of year. Sometimes the most delicious array of market offerings include the last of the summer tomatoes right next to the first of the winter squash. Who could ask for anything more? September brings the return of some cool weather crops like tender lettuces, even as we enjoy the hot summer bounty of crops like tomatoes and cucumbers. Beets and winter squashes aren’t hard to find. Which means you can make a variety of rich and robust full-meal salads with just one trip to the market. Gardeners and farmers have long known the old saying, “What grows together, goes together.” One of our favorite recipes for this time of year is a Three Sisters Stew. This recipe combines beans, corn, and squash—just as Native Americans throughout the US have combined these three crops in an array of agricultural arrangements. The sturdy corn stalks serve as poles for the beans; while the squash is planted in between, to balance soil health or to deter pests. This is the kind of recipe that is very forgiving of adaptations, so it wouldn’t be outlandish to stick a summer squash in there, or perhaps some green beans. Many variations are vegetarian but others include pork as well. And, of course, a crock pot version of this one-pot meal means you can have dinner waiting for you when

Another perk of farmers market shopping in the fall is the abundance of hearty, shelf-stable crops. If your back-to-school schedule keeps you from getting to the market every single week, use our “bulk up” strategy! Buy bulk quantities of several crops that have staying power, (and that you know you’ll eat.) Come to the market prepared (read: bring a big bag—maybe even one with wheels—and lots of cash) to stock up on onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, and pumpkins. These ingredients can store for weeks on end, especially if kept in a cool, dark place and far

away from fruits (like apples which naturally emit ethylene gas that promotes deterioration). Other hearty late summer and fall crops like cabbage, carrots, and kohlrabi will be happy to sit tight in the crisper of your fridge for 2-3 weeks, meaning you can still eat local even if you can’t make it to market every single weekend. Meat is available all year round, but late summer and early fall is a wonderful time to grill out. So look for protein farmers to get your favorites for grilling and try something new for the Crockpot or Instant Pot, like stew meat or shoulder roasts. That’ll streamline your weeknight dinner prep for sure! And since it is sold frozen, you can certainly stock your

EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM

freezer with grass-fed, healthy, and wholesome meat. And for our vegetarian friends, grilling is always a good idea—even without meat! Grilled zucchini, kohlrabi, onions, peaches, and so much more—such a delicious way to celebrate the seasons. The shorter, cooler days mean beautiful weather for a trip to the farmers market. With a stock-up mindset and a harvest time of year, your weekends can give you just the goods you need to get wholesome and hearty food on the table all week long—for weeks at a time! One of our favorite local “market chefs” is Paige Vandegrift of For Love of the Table and she has a great recipe for an early fall meal made of delicious summer veg. Maybe you’ve already made everything you know to make out of zucchini. Maybe you’re out of ideas for your eggplant. Not only will this hearty baked pasta dish bring those classic summer veg into perfect alignment, it’s just the kind of warm comfort food that we start to crave when those shorter days usher in the change of the season. The Power of Place to Clarify Your Purpose Why Travel Calls to Our Souls BY LAURA WOLF

I

t seems like everyone I talk with about their dreams and visions says something about wanting to travel more. According to the United States Department of Commerce, approximately 38.33 million U.S. citizens traveled overseas in 2017. What is it about travel that calls to our souls? Is it the gorgeous settings, the new sights and tastes and sounds, the excitement of adventure or the relaxation and ease that we associate with vacation? All journeys, whether inner or outer, ultimately help us to discover more about ourselves and our deeper purpose. I’ll never forget my first sacred journey to Ireland in 2014, led by Jeremy Schewe, ecologist, botanist, and expert in the Celtic Mysteries. Eschewing commercial tourist attractions, Jeremy took us to off-the-beatenpath sacred sites and wild natural landscapes where we often saw no one else all day. On our first full day in Ireland, our small group piled into the van to head to Rathcroghan, an archeological

complex inhabited from the Neolithic Age up through the early medieval period known as the ‘Seat of Kings.’ Rathcroghan was a ceremonial center, a residence and burial ground for many Irish kings and an important ancient site cited in Irish mythology and history. Eager to see our first sacred site in Ireland, we clamored out of the van chattering with excitement. But before setting us loose at Rathcroghan Mound, Jeremy gathered us together for a prayer and an impromptu teaching moment. He told us that the ancient Celts never approached anything directly. For one thing, it’s too easy to track a person who walks in a straight line. The Celts were masters at traveling through forests and around the hilly landscape without being detected. One could gather far more information about a place by spiraling around it. But also, it was considered aggressive and rude to approach a sacred site by walking straight up to it. Jeremy invited us to explore

Rathcroghan Mound in a spiral fashion, starting wide at the base and gradually winding our way up towards the top. He instructed us to slow down and intentionally heighten our senses to take in the colors of the grass, the shapes and textures of the stones, the sounds of the wind and the mist on our faces. American life is much faster paced than that of the villages and wild landscapes of Ireland. He wanted to drop us into a deeper, more connected place within ourselves and to tune into the rhythms and magic of the Celtic Isles. He asked us to stop each time we noticed something, to pause and listen there. The Celts believed there was no separation between people and nature, or between ecology and spirit. Everything of the ‘other world’ has a corresponding geophysical location. As Above, So Below: As Without, So Within. Anything that caught our attention was to be regarded as a signal from the Universe to pay attention, to listen for inner guidance and ancestral wisdom about where to

Most Neolithic and Megalithic sacred sites were built during the last major climate change. They have important information for these times we are currently navigating, if we will listen,” Jeremy says.

I had studied the symbol of the spiral for many years in my shamanic journey work. The Spiral shows up in human physiology, plants, minerals, animals, weather patterns, the stars-and in the spiritual practices of every ancient culture throughout the world. Certain geometrical shapes have the power to reach deep into the unconscious and to effect subtle changes in the observer. And yet, I had not come across this practice of approaching a sacred site in this reverent way. It took me far longer to spiral around Rathcroghan Mound that day than it would have had I marched straight up to the top but I felt very blessed to receive some simple and beautiful downloads that day about who I am at a deeper level. Each evening, after our adventures, we would gather in a local pub around some hearty

lamb stew and a pint of beer and share about the messages we received that day through the textures of the standing stones, the softness of the mist and the moss, the depths of the greens and the spray of the ocean. “There are really important messages within these temple sites for everyone. And every place we stand is sacred if we decide to see it that way. Whether you are traveling around the globe this year, or around your neighborhood, I invite you to spiral around your chosen

destination instead of charging straight at it. Slow down, pause, connect to your breath, heighten your senses and notice what catches your attention. Listen for a moment or two. The Sacred Journey to Spiritual Awakening BY THERESE INZERILLO

W

ithin each heart is a yearning, a yearning for connection… wholeness…meaning… validation…and most of all, love. We spend our lives trying to fill this hole within us so that we can feel complete. Often it is filled with empty, misguided emotions such as fear, resentment, and unworthiness. Our lives are often ruled by addictions, such as alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, food, money, control and innumerable other things that give us momentary pleasure but rob us of our true joy. We are left feeling emptier than before; and yet, the longing remains. We continue to evade the very thing that is the ultimate answer … the Divine within us and all around us. Deepak Chopra once said that “Addictions are a longing for the Divine.” It is a precursor to a desire to unite with something greater than our self.

The road to this realization can be short or long, and the experiences are as varied as the night sky peppered with stars. We are each unique expressions of this Divine essence and our journey toward the realization of our Truth can be excruciatingly painful, or ecstatically joyful. It is our choice. It is all part of our evolvement. But first, we must awaken. And once we do, we then consciously step onto the path of our sacred journey. Each soul incarnated here, at this specific place and time, by choice, to have experiences that bring wisdom and nurturing to our soul. Along our journey, free will is utilized, shaping and molding the course of our lives through our choices. In moments of weakness, choices may be made that cause determent from the goal. But even those choices are a positive learning, once the Truth is realized and they are corrected.

What people fail to understand is that ultimately, there are no “wrong turns” or “failures”, only choices. These choices shape whether your experience is joyful or painful. The challenge is that when something “traumatic” happens, instead of “extracting the wisdom and the love”, which is the purpose of the experience, we often carry the baggage with us. This drastically alters us, as false beliefs, fear and negativity can be integrated into our spirits and accepted as reality. What we need to understand is that all life is merely an illusion. It is a manifestation of our inner experiences, played out in a physical arena where we can evaluate, understand and integrate the lesson. Our life is meant to bring wisdom, joy, and ultimately love. Our true mission is to learn to “expand our capacity to love” until we can love unconditionally and eternally as the Divine loves

EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM

us. When we learn to apply that love to all areas of our life we develop a new perspective. We learn to cultivate an intimate relationship with the Divine wherein we “fill ourselves” up with this love energy so that we do not need to manipulate others to get our needs met. We learn to love ourselves with the same love that the Divine loves us and to treat ourselves in ways that nourish and nurture our bodies, minds, emotions, and spirits. Finally, we learn to love all others in the same way we love the Divine and ourselves, understanding that each one is merely a reflection of the whole and that we are all connected. This is the basis of the “Golden Rule” which is found in all sacred scriptures—the standard by which we are told to live our lives. “To love the Lord, your God, with your whole heart, soul, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself.”

If one is not in alignment with the Divine, in any given moment, we have the capacity to release all that no longer serves us and begin again. Sometimes we need prompting from someone whom we trust to assist us, such as a spiritual teacher, clergy or a trusted friend. Once we release the baggage and learn the miracle of forgiveness for our self and others, it is often advantageous to seek guidance from a mentor to help encourage our development so that we can cultivate and deepen our relationship with the Divine. It is necessary to learn how to go within, listen and follow our intuition, and commune with Spirit, which will lead us to situations and individuals who will enhance our life. First-hand spiritual encounters, known as “mystical” experiences are as ancient as life itself and imperative to the process of evolution of the soul. They help us realize and feel the Truth and come to know the Oneness of all creation and our place in it. We are guided by wisdom and inspiration, and lifted to a place of joy, filling us with love. It can also be helpful to seek the support of group connections that will uplift and inspire us. It has been shown that there is a synergist effect to our spiritual growth in group settings.

Spiritual adventures and retreats to places of beauty that carry sacred energy and historical insights can bring just what a spiritual seeker is longing for. Sacred sites can evoke spiritual encounters catapulting the seeker into a place of peace, tranquility and union with the Divine. With the distractions of life set aside, and true devotion upon honoring the connections with Spirit, the seeker begins to open to a new paradigm and perception, allowing wisdom to bring forth guidance into an unfoldment of their soul. Spiritual retreats usually balance group encounters, meditative time alone, fun and adventure, wisdom and truth lessons, and historical inspiration to nurture a healthy spiritual relationship with the Divine. Commune with the sacredness of a sunset. Feel the magnificence of a waterfall cascade over you. Sense the spirits of an ancient ruin, or a Cathedral of grandeur. Come full circle into an awakening of joy as you release the burdens and embrace the love that you are meant to be. Step forth into a Namaste Journey—a sacred journey honoring the Divine within and all around you.

stood in front of the Memorial Wall, reading the names of the 2,535 Cherokee heads of household identified in the 1835 Census, the Henderson Roll, and then forced into removal along the Trail of Tears. The number of household members was listed too, so in all, of the 16,542 Cherokees identified for removal by the Census, approximately 4,200 perished as a result of the Cherokee Removal in 1838. According to the Census, these were farmers, mechanics, weavers, spinners, and businessmen. The Cherokee Removal began in the Southeast United States and in the cities of Chattanooga, Cleveland, Charleston, and Birchwood, Tennessee, you’ll now find memorials dedicated to educating the public about the forced removal of the Cherokee from their ancestral land to make it available for white settlement. It’s a sobering experience to realize the ethnical cleansing our county partook. These monuments are a reminder of the past so we can move forward into the future without causing similar injustices.

ROSS’S LANDING

Ross’s Landing & The Passage: A Trail of Tears Memorial, Chattanooga, TN The Cherokee people are memorialized in this city park at Ross's Landing Plaza. You'll find seven doors that symbolize the seven clans of the Cherokee Nation, and six-foot disks share their history and culture. Look for the Cherokee alphabet on the plaza grounds and the sandstone carved pictures along the upper sides of the Aquarium's River Journey building. The Passage is a permanent outdoor exhibit, with symbolism of the seven clans of the Cherokee Nation. There is a 'weeping wall' representing the tears shed as the Cherokee were driven from their homes and removed on the Trail of Tears. Seven, six-foot ceramic disks tell the story of the Cherokee Nation from hundreds of years of Native American habitation in the southeast. Seven, 14-foot tall stainless steel sculptures of stickball players will grace the wall facing the river, educating visitors about the game and its importance to Cherokee culture. CHEROKEE REMOVAL

James F. Corn Interpretive Facility at Red Clay State Historic Park, Cleveland, TN

Cherokee Removal Memorial Park, Birchwood, TN

During the 1830s when Red Clay was functioning as an important governmental center, the Cherokee had adapted remarkably well to the American culture that surrounded them. At this time, the Cherokee had a government based on a constitution similar to that of the United States, elected officials, written laws, a Supreme Court and law enforcement officers. Some were Christians, many spoke English, they practiced trade, agriculture, and industry much as their American neighbors. Still, they retained much of their own unique culture, which the Interpretive Facility shows within the context of the past.

The Cherokee Removal Memorial Park is a multipurpose facility dedicated to those who suffered and died in what has become known as the "Trail of Tears". The history told here involves the removal of the Five Civilized Tribes from the Southeastern United States to make land available for white settlement. The park is intended to interpret and educate the public about the forced removal of the Cherokees from their ancestral land as well as inform them about the unique wildlife in the area.

CEMETARY

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

Brainerd Mission Cemetery, Chattanooga, TN

Hair Conrad Cabin, Cleveland, TN

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions developed the site originally as a mission within the Cherokee Nation. The property, buildings, and improvements were purchased from John McDonald, the grandfather of Cherokee Chief John Ross. The mission was the principal mission among other, smaller ones within the Cherokee Nation, and served as a training ground for the American Board. At the height of its operation, the mission complex consisted of 50 acres and contained 40 buildings including boarding houses, boys and girls schools and churches, houses, a mill, barns, warehouses, carpenter and blacksmith shops, as well as extensive fields, gardens, and orchards. During removal, the missionaries sympathized with the Cherokee—most missionaries accompanied the Cherokee prior to forced removal on the Trail of Tears. On August 18, 1838, the last church service was held at Brainerd Mission near the cemetery. The mission subsequently closed. Exhibits: One exhibit onsite commemorates Brainerd Mission's history.

Hair Conrad was a Cherokee leader during the 1820s and 1830s. In 1838, he was selected to lead the first Cherokee detachment, which traveled the main (northern) route from Rattlesnake Springs (near Charleston, TN) to Indian Territory. This 20-foot by 22-foot twostory cabin was built about 1804, and except for the later addition of a kitchen, this log building still looks much as it did during the 30-plus years that Conrad lived here. Do You Feel Like A.S.S.? You’re Not Alone BY CHRISTI CLEMONS HOFFMAN

T

he past few years have seen a speeding up of time and events as well as an increasing frequency of the Earth that we call “Ascension,” a metaphorical and energetic sacred journey. As the Earth is raising its frequency to move into a higher dimension, many of its humans are, too. For the last several months I’ve been seeing a spike in people on social media discussing vague descriptions of body aches and pains, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptoms, and the like— with no concrete diagnosis. People with these seemingly random complaints have also been coming to me for help for the past three years, and I have been experiencing these symptoms myself. I call it A.S.S.: Ascension Symptom Syndrome—a tongue-incheek way to describe how we feel at times. Common symptoms being reported around the world include:  Body aches  Flu-like symptoms with no fever  Headaches (with no prior history)  Late-onset allergies  Insomnia  Racing or scattered thoughts  Feeling like you’re “going crazy”  “Not wanting to be here”  Racing heartbeat  Weakness  Periods of overwhelming fatigue  Intuition opening up  New sensitivities to perfumes, dyes, additives, synthetics, and drugs  No longer tolerating large crowds

markers—with no corresponding diagnosis. Seen together, these symptoms become a syndrome, a group of symptoms that consistently occur together, or a condition characterized by a set of associated symptoms. This syndrome has been primarily hitting those who are aware of or waking up to their frequency, their vibration. In other words, those on a sacred path: lightworkers, empaths, and those who do not feel in sync with the rest of the world. I'm referring to what Dolores Cannon called the “volunteers," which she describes in her book The Three Waves of Volunteers. Long ago, the plan was for the Earth to raise its frequency and move into the 5th dimension, but it needed help. The call went out across the universe to recruit volunteers to help anchor the light and raise the Earth’s and humanity’s vibration during this shift. We (light workers and volunteers) answered the call and have been coming since around the 1940s/50s in different waves; perhaps more than the three general waves that Cannon describes. These volunteers are also known as the Indigo/Crystal/ Rainbow/Gold/Platinum generations. In general, we come in at a higher vibration and anchor the energy, but it is difficult. This higher frequency means that we are more sensitive to EVERYTHING than other people: to stress, emotions, fluorescent lighting, chemicals, scents, etc. Our bodies may also react differently to medication, resulting in increased or unexpected side effects. We may be the first in our families to have food allergies (though additives and genetic By themselves, these symptoms modification in our food supply may also be to blame) or cancer. are not necessarily cause for Our bodies may not even behave concern. Many will seek medical in predictable ways, resulting in advice only to be told there is nothing wrong, or that they have a idiopathic disease—or even poorly-understood condition such making us medical anomalies. In addition, many of us are as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. waking up to being empaths: those In other cases, a number of who “feel everything, sometimes biological markers will be out of to an extreme, and are less apt to balance such as enzymes, intellectualize hormone levels, and blood feelings” (drjudithorloff.com/how-

to-know-if-you're-an-empath/). We take on others’ emotions, often without realizing it, like a chameleon takes on the color of its surroundings. When we witness strong emotions, we share them. Simply being in crowds, or around certain individuals, can result in more physical and emotional symptoms. Events in the news can also trigger strong emotion, as just reading the words or seeing the photos cause our emotions to shift as we identify with those in crisis. What especially makes things difficult for these highly sensitive individuals is the very nature of being physical on Earth. The Earth's energy is dense. Communication is slow and clunky, free will (we're the only place that really has it) often results in lower emotions such as greed, anger, and fear. We also have manipulated our food into something that doesn't always nourish our bodies by genetic engineering and using preservatives, additives and "cides." Plus, other people don't understand how to manage their energy or emotions, and it sucks ours away. The Earth’s timeline is speeding up, and it is stressful because everything seems to be happening at once. Add to that the chaos our country—and the world—is in right now, with shocking news breaking daily. Stress has always been a part of life, but our stressors are increasing exponentially with job losses, gun violence, political instability, climate change, racial tensions, hate crimes and much more. The closer we get to Ascension, the more intense things become. And more people are getting "switched on," making them more sensitive to the energies around them. Fortunately, light workers and empaths are finding each other through social media and the internet. We help and educate each other, and many of us are learning and practicing modalities that help us manage our energy. Reiki, Access Consciousness, Quantum Heart Alignment, Healing Touch, Attunement and more assist those struggling with releasing that which no longer serves and achieving balance. Life

coaching and spiritual coaching help with understanding the self and the universe around us. And hypnosis techniques allow us direct communication with our highest good. I practice Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (the work Dolores Cannon developed). A recent session gave me hope. In the session it came out that the client had volunteered to come to Earth now because he had prior experience with Ascension, having been through a similar process elsewhere. The client’s higher self recommended a vegan diet to help him manage his energy at a higher frequency. Many people I’ve spoken with have naturally gravitated to a “lighter” diet without knowing why. They just intuitively knew it helped them feel better. There are other things we might do when our Ascension symptoms are in full force and we feel “off.” Meditation helps, as does being out in nature. We can also take frequent breaks: from work, social media, the news, or difficult people in our lives. Find what gives you joy, and do it. Avoid crowds. Read inspiring blogs. Seek out uplifting people and events. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, do not go it alone. Find others on a similar journey and build a community. In other words, manage your energy during this turbulent time. You will feel better for it. Spiritual Horoscope 21

September Horoscope VIRGO (AUG. 23 – SEPT. 22) Happy birthday Virgo! Saturn finally moves direct, opening up more options for joy and fulfillment! Meditate on your highest standards in relationships. You’ll be able to freely voice what you need from others, and you can more easily celebrate what others are offering you. You’ll feel less critical of yourself, and more open to take in the love that’s flowing all around you! Work can get really busy, so be sure to continue self-care practices and not get lost in hectic-ness. LIBRA (SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22) You’ve been working very hard on yourself to release old emotional patterns. They can even stem from childhood or ancestral lineage. Remember outmoded patterns can be recreated into new, more supportive courses of action! Saturn moving direct brings a “pay off” for your internal efforts. You’ll feel happier and it’ll be easier to maintain joy. You can also have financial breakthroughs. If single, you can start a passionate new relationship, or a current one can re-ignite! SCORPIO (OCT. 23 – NOV. 21) Practice observing your thoughts. How many are negative? Make it a goal to change the proportion. You’ll have instant shifts in health, mood, and prosperity! Think those good thoughts and dwell in the elevated emotions they provide. If you encounter challenges with others, focus on how you can get your ideas across in a clear, concise, and kind way. Don’t let those issues drag you down. Ride them like a wave back up to your spiritual sense of joy. Venus into Scorpio can bring a new relationship, as well as deeper self-love! SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 – DEC. 21) New love and joy want to pour into your life! It’s helpful to write about things that are making you angry and frustrated. Mars finally moved into Aquarius after being retrograde so long, and releasing clogged emotions is easy and freeing now. Write

things down, then tear them up, knowing you no longer carry them in your subconscious! Focus on receiving what you deserve so you can raise your life to the next level. Really feel what it’s like to live that new reality. You can also create a path for greater prosperity! CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 – JAN. 19) Saturn moves direct in your sign, helping you accomplish many things you’ve been planning for months. It’s slow but steady progress, yet every step has purpose and resonates with hard -won integrity. You can make important changes in relationships, career, self-esteem and family healing. Mars changes signs and brings more “oomph” and optimism, and starts to hasten results. Venus reminds you to enjoy time with friends and doing activities you love. Also, make time to be playful even though there are so many opportunities to “work on yourself”! AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 – FEB. 18) Mars moves back into your sign, now that it is direct again! You’ll be filled with energy and enthusiasm to accomplish goals that have seemed blocked for months. And with Saturn also moving direct, you’ll also feel much more positive and focused. Meditate to discover old patterns that have caused frustration and are ready to be dismantled. Clues can also come in dreams, so pay extra attention. You can also get a promotion or a bonus at work!

PISCES (FEB. 19 – MARCH 20) Mars is the planet of anger, and also of energy and personal empowerment. As it moves back into Aquarius, meditate on old resentments. Even current issues can harken back to a core pattern, so today’s problems are deeper than they seem. Validate your feelings, but then find ways to forgive (while still setting limits) so the anger won’t deplete your vitality and creativity! Focus on self-love and letting go of guilt and shame. It can be a two-month inner healing project, but you’ll come out of it with renewed joy and zest for life! ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19) It’s a great prosperity month! Center your meditations on opening up to receive abundance. You can get a raise, promotion, new job or major recognition. You’ve been working hard and now it’s paying off. Even in your personal or spiritual life, you’ll notice gradual, but powerful progress after feeling stuck for months. Romantic relationships thrive, as do friendships. With so much tension being relieved in many areas of your life, you’re able to feel joy and have fun! TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Break free from comfort zones! Open your mind to new aspects of your personality. Your soul is so vast, so imagine playing with different types of expression. You can start a relationship, or have renewed warmth in current partnership. You can also have a big career breakthrough that boosts your spirits and your wallet! Saturn direct keeps you focused on all goals, and makes you confident you can achieve them. Be sure to dedicate time each day to meditation or inner reflection so you stay open to receive all these blessings! GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20) Re-commit to meditation, yoga or a spiritual practice. Open your heart with enthusiasm to the Universe and see what gifts flow into your life! You can begin to feel more trusting as old wounds and memories of betrayal or

heartache heal. You’ll also feel more solid inside. If you suffer from anxiety, you’ll be more balanced. If you’ve been worried or confused, you’ll gain more clarity and a stronger intuition. Guidance can come in dreams, too. You can also have financial or work blessings! Stay relaxed and open to joy and abundance! CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22) Saturn moving direct can clear up long-term problems in relationships. This can make current partnerships better, heal memories of old ones, or point you in healthy new directions for future connections. Meditate on your values about what you desire in partnerships. Then make a list you can refer to. Write about how you can express your best self, and what you most need from others. Don’t waver on your standards! This exercise can also help with office politics and even help you break through prosperity limitations. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) It’s a powerful relationship month! You can meet a passionate new partner if single, or feel more excitement in a current bond. If you’ve had friction or disharmony, meditate on the issues at hand. Then write out a plan that will be the best for both of you, or list the ideas you can calmly express. You’ll find you can be guided together to work things out in a way that empowers the connection and you’ll feel you succeeded as a unit. You’ll also find work stresses straightening out as well!
