Dear Friend,

With the February issue, Evolving Magazine celebrated its fifth year of publishing. When I felt the tug to restart the magazine in 2009, it's something I never thought I would do again. It had been nine years since I stopped publishing Evolving Woman. During those years I worked as a freelance writer and in sales. People would often ask when I planned to come back. I always said, "It's too hard. I just can't." And it has been hard. And glorious. And so incredibly fulfilling that I can't believe this is my life. I am grateful to you, our readers...and to you, our advertisers...and to you, our wonderful writers, for making Evolving Magazine a vital part of the community and the leading resource in Kansas City on living well. And of course, great thanks to my daily helpers: Judy Kirkpatrick, Connie Humiston, Karen Cowdry and Susan Prout. Each of you helps make the magazine hum. Starting our sixth year, we again have our annual Wellness Directory inserted inside this issue. With 63 practitioners included, you will find holistic health practitioners, food and nutrition products and groups, retreat centers, energy healing practitioners and so much more. Please, pull this valuable resource out of the magazine to keep and reference all year long. Kansas City is blessed with a plethora of holistic practitioners and we must support them to help them thrive. And in doing so, we can each benefit and thrive from these healing modalities as well.

Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Paradoxical Parenting There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give to our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings. —Johann Wolfgang von Goethe The forthcoming book, The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America, by Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfield, has caused a great reaction and many opinions about the causes of success in children. You may recall that she wrote Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, also a very controversial book. She and her husband, both law professors at Yale, have outlined three qualities that they contend are the underpinning of success in America’s overachieving groups: A group superiority complex (e.g., mystical creation story, religious doctrine). Insecurity about one’s personal worth or status. Impulse control (ability to resist temptation to surrender when the going gets tough. They assert that Chinese, Indians, Jews, Mormons, Nigerians, Iranian and Cuban children have superior parenting as exemplified by their success academically and financially. The feedback has been prompt and loud. Some have accused them of being racist, elitist and lacking in solid research. Having read detailed reviews of the book many of the facts are compelling, though incomplete. This made me think about the dilemma we face as parents, educators and mental health professionals working to raise the future generations. The question is how we can assist the children in our care to succeed in the realization of their full human potential. This would include success in the worlds of relationships, work, and personal emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health — pretty big job for us ordinary mortals! In Chua and Rubenfeld’s three traits we can see the paradox of superiority vs. inferiority. This sets up a dichotomy in which a person’s sense of self-worth is sacrificed for the good of the group or group mission. They admit that the downside is these qualities can create deep pathologies like extreme insecurity and hyper-materialism. So, like many theories, I think we take what is helpful and integrate this with

what we know works. It is true that children of immigrants are more likely to go to college, start businesses, believing in hard work to get ahead. In the quest to succeed, personal development often suffers. One condition children do need to grow and mature is adversity. They also need mentoring and support, teaching them how to deal with it themselves in age-appropriate ways. Children who have autocratic or laissez-faire parents tend to have issues of insecurity, anxiety and anger. I like William Schutz’s idea that we need three things beyond food, shelter and clothing. They are: 1. Inclusion: A sense of belonging, I matter, feel important. 2. Control: Feelings of competence, able to cope with the world. 3. Affection or Openness: Feeling lovable, unconditional love for real self. The paradox is encouraging competence and independence, while holding love and support. This model can help the child to develop as an individual who is part of a group, feels loved and competent. This makes room for a greater selfactualization without the feelings of inferiority as the driver. Though the traits Chau and Rubenfeld identify may ‘drive’ people to success in academic and material ways, much of human development is lost in the process. Paul Tough in How Children Succeed suggests that “Qualities such as perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism and self-control are more likely to ensure a child’s success…” Indeed parenting and mentoring children is a study in paradox and one that requires in us the qualities we are trying to impart. Hopefully we grow and learn as we fill that role. Indeed it is the most difficult and challenging one I have ever experienced.

Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes Yoga Philosophy Improves our Lives

T

he father of yoga, Patanjali, gave us a tool kit of yoga methods to live a happy and healthy life. Yoga comes from “San khya” meaning let order form. Order is nature’s first law. He called the philosophies yama (restraint) and niyama (solution). The “restraints” are:

1.

Ahimsa Learning to find peace and avoid violence in thoughts, words, deeds, and actions. 2. Satya Truth, meaning truth is love and love is our divine nature. “Truth is God and God is love” is based on non-violence; based on love. 3. Asteya Means non-stealing and to lighten up on the belief of lack and/or “stealing” another’s energy via manipulation or untruth. 4. Brahmachrya is courage of mind and heart and the power to fight injustice as we develop wise minds and compassion. 5. Aparigraha means we do not covet or hoard; we do not steal as this is poverty of spirit. The solutions are: 1. Saucha Means we remain pure and clean, the subset of all order in mind, body, diet, etc. 2. Santosa Every day we foster contentment. 3. Tapas Develop eagerness and devotion as we create and serve. 4. Svadhyaya Foster self knowledge and continual education. 5. Isvara pranidhana Find daily devotion to God without pride to find the truth within. Honor the sacred oneness of all life where deep in your heart you know that you can do anything. This place heals lack, fear, doubt and anxiety. Sound like a jumble of words and rules? This is much more. I love to explore the depth and beauty here. For example, the essence of Ahimsa is nonviolence of our own heart. The vioEVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

lence we inflict on each other is only the outward manifestation of the conflict raging inside. We may consider ourselves non-violent people but violence can work on subtle levels. It has many disguises. Thoughts of guilt, shame, resentment, disappointment all have seeds of violence. Every time we are unable to forgive ourselves or someone else, when we carry resentment; when we put the responsibility of the whole world on our shoulders; when we expect the whole world to run according to our liking we are being violent. When we act in fear not in love, same thing. Truth and nonviolence are inseparable. Gandhi said, “When I look for ahimsa, truth says, 'Find it through me.' When I look for truth, ahimsa says, 'Find it out through me.'“ Non-violence is unconditional love, it is true compassion. Yoga encourages us to shine light upon the darkness with compassion. When we choose this, we contribute to spreading peace in the world. On the mat, intend to practice the philosophy in action and perform the poses with grace and without force. Intend to respect and love your body’s limitations. Watch and become aware of your thoughts and see if there are any that hold harshness toward self. Our self-love and our self-esteem always grow. There is no limit to the love yoga gives us.

Holistic Health—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Grain Brain: The Truth about Your Brain’s Silent Killers

T

he surprising truth about wheat, carbs and sugar — they are your brain’s silent killers! This is the premise of the book, with a four-week plan to achieve optimum health called, Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, M.D. He is Board Certified in Neurology and a fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He is also a founding member and fellow of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. Groundbreaking and timely, Grain Brain shows that the fate of your brain is not in your genes. It’s in the food you eat. The cornerstone of all degenerative conditions, including brain disorders is inflammation, which can be triggered by carbs, especially those containing gluten or high in sugar. Some of Dr. Perlmutter’s recommendations are going ‘against the grain’ of what conventional doctors may be telling you. Increasing numbers of studies are confirming the link between gluten (found in wheat, rye and barley) and neurological dysfunction. Gluten may trigger, not just dementia, but epilepsy, headaches, depression, schizophrenia, ADHD and even decreased libido. As many as 40 percent of people can’t properly process gluten so the first step to optimal health is to eliminate it completely from the diet. The next step is to eliminate all refined sugars. The good news is that you can learn to control your genetic destiny even if you were born with a natural tendency to develop a neurological condition. This will require you to free yourself from a few myths. The two biggest myths are that a low-fat, high carb diet is good for you and that cholesterol is bad. High levels of dietary fat have been proven to be important for health and peak brain function. So eat your avocados, butter, olives, cheese, nuts, seeds, free range eggs and grass fed meats and use healthy oils such as olive oil, sesame oil and coconut oil. Add plenty of vegetables, low glycemic fruit sparingly, eat often, and drink plenty of water. There is debate over the benefits and risks of this ketogenic diet; however, Dr. Perlmutter is convinced this is the best dietary regi-

men. He also tells about the importance of regular sleep and exercise. The next important information in the book is an excellent explanation of insulin resistance, blood sugar issues and excess weight all being inflammatory to the brain. What we are beginning to understand is that insulin resistance, the precursor to Type 2 diabetes, sparks the formation of those infamous plaques that are present in diseased brains. Some researchers are now calling dementia and Alzheimer’s, Type 3 diabetes. So, the place to start in assessing your risk for brain health begins with checking for diabetes parameters, inflammation markers and vitamin D levels. The blood tests to start with are a fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1C, fructosamine, fasting insulin levels, C-reactive protein, homocysteine, vitamin D levels and gluten and other food sensitivity testing. To be proactive with your brain and overall health, Dr Perlmutter recommends the following supplements: alpha lipoic acid, coconut oil, DHA, probiotics, resveratrol, turmeric and vitamin D3 regularly. Dr. Perlmutter’s four-week program is called “Grain Brain” rehab and say good-bye to “Grain Brain.” He gives step-by-step instructions on nutritional requirements, meal plans and recipes. Christiane Northrup, M.D. and holistic gynecologist, writer and speaker, sums up Grain Brain, “Dementia and many other brain diseases are not inevitable, nor are they genetic. They are directly and powerfully linked to a diet high in sugar and grains. Grain Brain not only proves this, it also gives you everything you need to know to protect your brain-or a loved one’s-now.” I encourage you to investigate this new information for yourself and decide if it will be helpful to you.

Whole Body Connec ons: An Abdominal Approach

I

n the world of alternative medicine I am still amazed that more focus is not placed on the abdomen. I would like to argue that if we are truly practicing holistic medicine, then how is it that we can overlook the importance of abdominal health… and I don’t just mean your diet. During the past !ive years there has been a small rise in abdominal consciousness — due mostly to the growing acceptance that food allergies and the need for a gluten free lifestyle are not just trendy fads. But how do we go further, beyond thinking of the belly as just a built in food processor. After seeing most magazine covers you would think our society wants to get rid of our mid-section altogether. We try making it unnoticeable and !lat as possible by perpetually sucking in and squeezing the life out of it. For over a decade I have dedicated my practice, Centered Spirit, to helping people achieve optimal health through their abdomen. I have discovered what the Maya, Aztec, Taoist, Japanese and other ancient cultures and philosophies have spoken of for centuries…harmony in our center, core (or hara) is our vital life source; and its overall health will have a direct effect on the entire body. Yes, the obvious reason to seek Maya Abdominal Therapy is for a digestive, reproductive or emotional issue; but even shoulder, leg, foot or back pain can be traced back to the abdomen. Sure, it is a long way from a foot or shoulder to the abdomen — so, where do these connections begin and end? First of all, pain and in!lammation anywhere in the body can be the result of congestion and acid build up. Let’s start with the obvious then, when you have a pain in your leg it would make sense to start by treating the acute area !irst. Massage and stretching will help eliminate lactic acid, increase circulation and improve range of motion. Ahhh…relief right? Yes and No -- this is where most therapists will stop their treatment. Even though there may have been a 20 percent, 40 percent or even 70 percent improvement, the results often only last a few days or weeks; something is still missing which will get your body harmonious and centered again. To achieve 100% lasting results all we need to do is follow the chain of oxygen and blood !low back to the source — the abdomen. In order for you to completely and properly heal, you need a continuous and unobstructed !low of nutrient rich blood to the area of discomfort. This requires a healthy abdomen, one that will fully in!late with a billowing movement, providing the necessary pumping action for our lungs and heart to circulate blood. Can you remember the last time you watched a baby sleeping? I guarantee their belly does this automatically…fully in!lating and de!lating with each breath. But as adults, our body’s natural response to pain or stress is to protect by subcon-

sciously tightening our abdomen, which leads to shallow breathing affecting our overall health. This abdominal approach to health is a true holistic way of checking every connection in our body. In Traditional Maya Medicine there is no separation between the physical and emotional body, especially when it comes to health. It is common sense to a Maya healer that acid re!lux, physically affects the lower esophageal sphincter where it meets the stomach. This is due

chronic re!lux symptoms. I was able to make this physical/emotional connection for this woman, offer her an ancient abdominal massage, be a good listener and give her the natural lasting relief she was looking for. After years of studying Maya Traditional Medicine with great Traditional Healers (Curanderos) of Central America and Mexico, I am a believer that the simplest medicine is usually the most effective. If you happen to have pain anywhere in your body I invite you to do a simple holistic check. Put your hands on your belly and expand with a deep inhale…and exhale. If your abdomen is hard and it is dif!icult to get a full breath, place your focus on just abdominal breathing for 5 minutes. This billowing action will naturally massage organs and increase circulation throughout the whole body. Massaging your abdomen in a clockwise direction around the navel will also help to reduce tension. If your core does not get softer with breath work or self-massage I encourage you to seek advice from a trained Maya Abdominal Therapist. These techniques, once thought of as only a relic of ancient wisdom, cannot be ignored anymore. The importance of Maya Abdominal Therapy and the far-reaching bene!its it has -- even outside of our core — are proven on a daily basis. A holistic approach to medicine always involves the abdomen. When you pay attention to your center…you will always !ind magni!icent connections from head to toe and create a domino affect of good health!

to a constriction of the diaphragm muscle. But, more importantly, the Maya healer realizes this tightness in the chest all started with stress. I will never forget a woman who came to see me for chronic acid re!lux. She had been taking medication for the past few years to treat digestive symptoms and wanted to !ind a natural solution. She expressed to me that she !irst noticed her re!lux symptoms two years ago when she was going through a divorce. (Connection made! I was saying in my head.) This is easily one of the most stressful and emotional events in ones life and could immediately make a person feel like their breath has been taken away (tightening of the diaphragm) leading to EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

Reflec ons on Death: A Re-Emergence with God/Source Energy

I

n addition to daily activities, our lives are sometimes !illed with change and loss; each loss is an opportunity for the birth of something new. Your ability to navigate the small losses, as well as the loss of loved ones, directly affects the quality of your life. Your willingness and ability to grieve and continue to live make you stronger. Contemplating our own impermanence reinforces the art of surrendering to the changes that are beyond our control and the importance of fully living in every moment. “Learn to die and thou shall learn how to live. There shall none learn how to live that has not learned to die.”— Tibetan Book of the Dead Familiarity with death changes your perspective and illuminates your life, and preparing for your death is empowering. Consider these opportunities for growth and healing: • Seek to become knowledgeable about the process of death and dying. Those who have had near death experiences and those who work with the dying do not fear their own death because they have an intimate relationship with death. My mother, a nurse, would stand up in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner and announce “Don’t ever put me on a ventilator, don’t do CPR and don’t even think about a feeding tube.” Have conversations about your beliefs about death, desired medical intervention and your idea of a good death. Even consider hosting a dinner party with friends or family. Need help? Topics, educational content and personalized guest invitations are provided at www.deathoverdinner.org. • Death Café is a "social franchise"

created to increase awareness of death and help people make the most of life: www.DeathCafe.com. Groups meet regularly in Lawrence and St. Joseph. Try journaling about your history with death to reveal your strengths and areas that may need healing. What was your earliest experience? How did you feel and react? Write about the loss of your parents or others close to you. How effectively have you grieved? Write your own obituary or write the obituary a close relative would write about you. Are you pleased with the legacy you are creating? Are you accomplishing the things that you had hoped to in your life? Make a bucket list. List all the places you want to see and things you want to do. And yes, do those things now — when you are told you are dying, it is too damn late. Regardless of your age, you should legally document your preferences for medical care. Families can be torn apart when there are questions. An Advance Directive states your wishes about desired medical interventions. A Durable Power of Attorney designates a person to speak on your behalf. The Center for Practical Bioethics practicalbioethics.org has a workbook, Caring Conversations, complete with information and questions to consider, guidance for necessary conversations and the necessary documents. Organize your legal and !inancial affairs. Many bank accounts, investments and properties can be set up to automatically transfer after death. Write or update your will. Much end-of-life suffering comes from un!inished business in our relationships. Limit your regrets! Examine your relationships. Express love and appreciation. Take steps to resolve grudges, non-forgiveness, resentment and anger. This can be done without contact with these people or situations — simply write a letter, ceremonially burn it and release the energy of your feelings with gratitude.

In ancient times, death was supported by elders — wise members of society who had an intimate knowledge of the process.

Cultivate a spiritual connection. Death is a natural process — our bodies systematically shut down, coupled with protective processes that prevent physical distress. Our souls know how to die; they have done this many times. It is our egos that fear death. Those who have nurtured a strong spiritual connection identify less with the ego. They understand that death is simply a re -emergence with God/Source Energy.

Western Medicine does not do death and dying well. Whether death occurs in a hospital or at home with hospice, the available support is medical in nature. However, people are choosing to live more conscious lives and desiring a deeper, richer experience in death. Dying is a sacred rite of passage and can be a time of peace and healing for the entire family. In ancient times, death was supported by elders — wise members of society who had an intimate knowledge of the process. Today, Soul Midwives are trained in the art. This work can begin a year or more before expected death. Planning, life review, guided imagery, energy work, aromatherapy and sound are used to achieve a peaceful death. A code word may be established to be used when the soul is ready to release from the body. As an example, when I recently entered the home of a man and his family whom I’d never met, I was overwhelmed by the intense grief, and the man was experiencing dif!iculty breathing. I energetically cleared the room, then the individual family members, then cleared the man’s energy and gave Reiki. His breath-

ing became easier and slower. The family said their !inal goodbyes and I called in his guides when he was ready. With the family circled around, touching his body, he took his !inal, peaceful breaths. I look forward to the opportunity to be present when a person transitions. There is an energetic magic that occurs in the !inal moments. It feels as if heaven reaches closer to the earth and opens up to welcome the soul back home. Sharing these !inal moments with a person transitioning is being in the presence of Divine Truth.

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels March 2014 Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Happy birthday Pisces! Your birth year starts off with many blessings as abundant Jupiter religns. You’ll find emotional and financial fulfillment flows – even from situations from as far back as October. Renew your commitment to meditation, and intuition will increase. Also ponder how you can heal in areas of sexuality, intimacy and trust. Aries (March 21 – April 19) You’ll have lots of healing with family issues and old emotional wounds. When you feel irritated with anyone, please stop to breathe/meditate and see what is being triggered from the past. You’ll be able to see things from a new perspective and release the emotional charge. This makes relationships better, since you’ll be more open and trusting. Also, make time for new friends and now activities – lots of joy will flow! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Mars, the planet of energy and life direction, retrogrades this month. Meditate on

taking better care of your health. Your body deserves good treatment! Even practicing gentle yoga, deep breathing, or eating more slowly can make a big shift. Meditate on job skills and see if you can imagine a better use of them. Two months from now, offers may arise and you should be ready to make decisions! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Jupiter, the planet of abundance, moves direct and improves your finances! At the same time, Saturn move retrograde, creating a balance so you also have boundaries and integrity around money. Seek advice from trustworthy people about

how to build for your future monetarily. Also, read books about prosperity . . . and about how spirituality and money blend together. The Universe wants you to prosper! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Abundant and luscious Jupiter is moving direct in your sign helping you feel -- well, abundant and luscious! You might start a new relationship, or have a re-kindling in a current one. Your self-esteem is high and you can break negative emotional patterns . . . especially around eating habits and romance. Also meditate on releasing control issues. Trust that your loved ones can make good choices. This will improve bonds even more! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Any difficulties you have, whether with family, work or relationship have a spiritual answer. Don’t struggle with your logical mind. Go within and meditate. Let your intuition provide solutions! This gets you out of emotions and above drama. You can also start a new relationship with someone with a strong spirituality. If partnered, try meditating or doing yoga together and let new levels of bonding happen! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) It’s a great time to overcome negative self -talk! Meditate to observe your mean thoughts – especially about your body, your talents and your finances. Write them down. Take those mean statements and flip them into positive affirmations. Your body is a beautiful place to live -praise its strengths and its hard work! Affirm your abilities and money earning capacity so new prosperity is attracted to you. Avoid people who tell you negative stuff about yourself, or about themselves!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Jupiter is bringing you heaps of abundance, prosperity and happiness! In order to receive as much as the Universe wants to give, comb your consciousness for negative programming. Maybe you feel you won’t be as well liked if you are super successful in business and romance? Maybe it’s hard to have good stuff come easily? Meditate on the fact you’re reaping good karma you sowed previously. You deserve your blessings! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Saturn turns retrograde in your sign, helping you set important goals. Meditate on life priorities. Make a list of what to

release in order to make room for greater good. This could be habits, attitudes, beliefs, or even people. Clearing out your mind and life feels empty at first – but now you’ll have the time and energy to pursue what is truly vital to you! Make a second list of steps you’re committed to take to make dreams reality! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) It’s great to be involved in many different activities and have tons of friends, but Mars and Saturn are retrograding and asking you to look at how you expend energy. Are you having a fun, or are you scattered and unfocused? Do you spend more time with many casual acquaintances and fail to develop deep connections? Meditate on the dearest and best in your life. Put more focus there, and let other people and situations fade away. A great side effect will even be more prosperity! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Jupiter moves direct and helps clear out relationship problems. You can heal issues in current connections – or leave them if you’re not fulfilled! If single, you can attract someone who is amazingly aligned with you spiritually, emotionally and financially. Work wise, don’t make any sudden changes. Wait until late May when things are better revealed. Meditate and think about how you can confront in a clear, calm way to deal with stressful job stuff. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) This is a month of balance for you. So many work opportunities open up, but you need discernment to see which are best. You might also need to let go of people of situations that don’t have integrity so prosperity can flow for you. Surround yourself with people as positive as you are! Relationships and health really blossom since you’ll feel less stressed! Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practitioner. She also holds a Masters in Spiritual Counseling and has been teaching and consulting for more than two decades. Her book “Spiritual Gifts of the 12 Astrological Signs” is now on Amazon in Kindle version. Ms. Michaels is available for appointments in her home or by phone.
