Dear Friend, Recently, I discovered that I have mistakenly used the words Complementary, Holistic and Alternative interchangeably when addressing differing health modalities. This month, we honor all modalities of holistic healing with our annual Wellness Directory and a variety of articles on health and healing. To help clarify the terms:

Holistic Health There are two schools of thought in defining Holistic Health. One explanation means to treat the whole person rather than simply managing a disease by treating its symptoms. This modality is primarily concerned with the promotion of preventative maintenance by supporting nutrition, exercise, the elimination of toxins, managing stress and other healthy lifestyles. For others, the term holistic health is strictly defined by the use of alternative and complementary medicine. While traditional medical professionals may use complementary and alternative methods for holistic medicine, the term is more often called integrative care.

The Soul of Wellness...11 How to Naturally Detox...12 Looking Beyond the Scar...13 The Seasons of Acupuncture...14

Alternative Medicine So, within the broad scope of holistic health, are complementary and alternative medicines. Alternative medicine is the use of non-traditional methods of medicinal care and can include homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, energy medicine, acupuncture, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines and faith healing.

Interview with Author, Nick Ortner...15

Complementary Medicine Interchangeable with the term integrative medicine, complementary medicine is the use of alternative methods in conjunction with conventional medical treatments. Please pull out the Wellness Directory and keep it for reference year-round — and enjoy this month’s wide variety of health and healing articles.

News Vernal Equinox Healing of the Waters Harmony Energetics and Sacred Earth Arts are working together to provide a local opportunity to heal the waters of our planet, starting with our own Big Muddy. The event will occur at noon on Saturday, March 21st on the Missouri River at La Benite Park in Sugar Creek. “Our river eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexica and can carry our healing intentions around the globe,” explains Linda VanBibber, owner of Harmony Energetics. In preparation for the event, statistics concerning the world water crisis will be reviewed Thursday evening, March 19 at 7:00. Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work with water will also be presented. “Dr. Emoto has demonstrated the intelligence of water and its response to intention and sound,” says Linda. “We can make a difference in the global water crisis by joining our loving intentions here in the Kansas City area.” We will also honor the West African spirit of the river, Oshun. “Honoring the spirits of nature is traditional for indigenous people,” explains Linda. This honoring makes us more mindful of the physical realities as well. These traditions provide a vast energetic resource for healing. Participants will be encouraged to call upon their own spiritual traditions for healing of the waters. “The important thing is to join our prayers,” she says. Oshun is also the patron of the local percussion and dance ensemble, Women of the Drum, founded by Regina Compernolle, owner of Sacred Earth Arts. “Oshun is also the deity of love and attraction,” says Regina. “She flows with great power, taking away what is no longer needed and bringing what we do need. And she needs us.” Members of Women of the Drum are environmentally conscious, honoring Nature with dance and song. Participants are encouraged to bring drums, rattles or other sound healing instruments to the event. But healing intentions and love of the water is all that is required. A healing circle using voice to charge waters from the river will be the focus. If the weather is nice, a pot -luck picnic can be shared. This event will be held annually near the spring and fall equinoxes. Call 816-833-1129 or email laylahv@swbell.net for more information.

News The Fear Cure Cultivating Courage as Medicine for the Body, Mind, and Soul “As a culture, we are so scared, we’re not just making ourselves miserable, we’re making ourselves sick. By all measures, we are the healthiest, smartest, richest, safest people in human history. And yet, we have never been more afraid.” Not many people in the medical world are talking about how being afraid can make us sick — but the truth is that fear, left untreated, becomes a serious risk factor for conditions from heart disease to diabetes to cancer. Now Lissa Rankin, M.D., explains why we need to heal ourselves from the fear that puts our health at risk and robs our lives of joy — and shows us how fear can ultimately cure us by opening our eyes to all that needs healing in our lives. Drawing on peer-reviewed studies and powerful true stories, The Fear Cure presents a breakthrough understanding of fear’s effects and charts a path back to wellness and wholeness on every level. We learn: • How a fearful thought translates into physiological changes that predispose us to illness. • How to tell true fear (the kind that arises from a genuine threat) from false fear (which triggers stress responses that undermine health). • How to tune in to the voice of courage inside — our “Inner Pilot Light.” • How to reshape our relationship to uncertainty so that it’s no longer something to dread, but a doorway to new possibilities. • What our fears can teach us about who we really are. At the intersection of science and spirituality, The Fear Cure identifies the Four Fearful Assumptions that lie at the root of all fears — from the sense that we’re alone in the universe to the belief that we can’t handle losing what we love—and shifts them into Four Courage-Cultivating Truths that pave our way to not only physical well-being, but profound awakening. Using exercises from a wide range of mind-body practices and spiritual traditions, Dr. Rankin teaches us how to map our own courage-cultivating journey, write a personalized Prescription for Courage, and step into a more authentic life. Lissa Rankin, M.D., author of the New York Times bestseller Mind Over Medicine, is a mind-body medicine physician, author, speaker, and founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, a training program for physicians and other health-care providers. www.LissaRankin.com

Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes Have you Heard of Rope Yoga?

P

eople have either never heard of rope yoga or, I feel, students fall short of understanding its benefits. “You will love this!” I share with new students. Soon, I hear that popular mantra, “Oh my God.” Yoga with ropes, called Kurunta, began in India when the first yogis (I call them Ancient Yogis) hung in trees and branches performing poses. Inspired by these ancient ones, the great master teacher B.K.S. Iyengar designed an innovative wall using ropes to help students open and stabilize the body. He found students could hold poses longer, learn correct alignment, and safely approach inversions or more advanced poses without getting injured. At the Yoga School, I find that most find relief, especially from back pain. The word Kurunta means puppet. When using ropes on our rope wall, we become like puppets, suspended by strings. Complex methods of the welltrained show us how ropes heal, align and bring more blood to the body, lymph and all systems. Examples of what I believe are the benefits of creating a downward facing dog pose on ropes:

♦ ♦

♦ ♦

♦ ♦ ♦

Immediate pain relief for almost any back pain, especially tight or stiff folks. The correct movement in pose may ease slipped discs in the spine. Helps “plump” degenerated disc (I know this is a tall promise but it comes from the great masters) with hydration, organic diet, and regular practice. Empowers the entire endocrine system. Reverses blood flow to take pressure off the heart, and brings blood to top of organs. Lowers blood pressure. Improves balance and stamina. Eases fear of certain yoga poses especially for elderly, injured or anxious students.

Over the years, I’ve seen thousands of students heal their backs. Some order a set of ropes for home. I’m hanging on the ropes most mornings even to dry my hair upside down! (At home so no one sees me.) EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

The Great Rope Wall out in Ventura, CA and elsewhere offers extensive trainings. However, those I know who have attended these events are asked to sign a contract to keep secret the many tools of their trade. I find that odd. Why not spread the glorious news? Their rope wall is intricate, with potential to practice many poses for specific needs. Our rope wall is the simple, original design of Mr. Iyengar’s, which meets most of students’ needs. Thus I feel we use it more. Great living master Aadil Palkhivala’s teaching techniques offered this warning: He taught a strong group of yogis the wall techniques, and upon returning a year later saw the atrophy and weakness that resulted in too much rope yoga. He said we must work hard for maximum benefits, doing poses on the mat; or use the wall more for the therapeutic benefits. Teacher, trainer and staffer, Theresa Goodman, with her extensive training found more ways to ease neck, shoulder, back pain and stress. “I find the work on the ropes builds courage, composure, peace and calm,” Theresa said. However, do use every caution if you build a wall. Our bolts are thick 10-inch rods inserted into double laid 2 x 4s. A trusted engineer approved the wall to hold a lot of weight. Have fun with this but always be safe. Jai!

Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Boundaries in Our Lives

W

hat is a b o u nd a r y ? Merriam-Webster defines it as “something that indicates or fixes a limit or extent.” The author, Anne Katherine, M.A. in Where to Draw the Line: How to Set Healthy Boundaries Everyday, says, “A boundary is a limit that promotes integrity.” She goes on to say, “In short, your boundaries — or your defenses — create a corridor through which your life has moved.” Let’s talk about the limits or extents as they relate to our everyday lives. An important differentiation is between boundaries and defenses. Boundaries tend, most of the time, to be consciously chosen while defenses are in the unconscious part of our mind. We come into this world as totally symbiotic beings, one with our biological mothers. Quickly we begin to differentiate, developing as a separate organism, moving slowly toward independence. Fast forward to teens and into young adulthood. One hopes that this process is a healthy one where the person is learning healthy differentiation or boundaries. However, as adults most of us struggle with knowing the difference between a defense and a boundary. Anne Katherine helps us to think about this with the lens she calls integrity. “By the limits you set, you protect the integrity of your day, your energy and spirit, the health of your relationships, the pursuits of your heart.” She goes on to say, “A boundary is like a membrane that keeps an organism intact. It lets positive things in. It keeps harmful things out. In this way it operates quite differently from defenses, which discriminately keeps things out.” Think about your day and how many times you make decisions about a limit or boundary for yourself or one you share with others. It could be about time, space, tasks, food, dress and appearance, emotion or interpersonal interactions. Boundaries are expressed in our choices regarding these things. People are quite different

in the way their boundaries are experienced. Ernest Hartmann, MD, has done extensive research on what he calls thick and thin boundaries. He writes about it in Boundaries in the Mind: A New Psychology of Personality. Thick boundary people are more black and white, seeing things as good or bad, us or them. They may suppress or deny strong feelings though body indicators like heart rate, blood pressure or muscle tension betray their agitation. Thin boundary people are highly sensitive in a variety of ways and from an early age. Their boundaries are easily crossable and they see life in shades of gray. Go to www.youremotionaltype.com and find a short questionnaire to determine if you are a thick or thin boundary person. A longer one is in Dr. Hartmann’s book. His research shows, and it is agreed upon by many brain scientists, that these ways of behaving are in the hard wiring of the brain. Having healthy boundaries helps us to feel safe, establishing and maintaining good interpersonal relationships and having the ability to function well in our work environments. Think about what helps you take in what is healthy and constructive, and keeps out what is potentially unhealthy. What are your inner and outer boundaries? What is your natural tendency and how does this help or hinder you? Answering these will help you think about your boundaries, their quality and effectiveness. Try some new ways to develop and manifest the boundaries that promote your integrity.

Holistic Health—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Five Steps to Heal Emotional Wounds

E

motional wounds take longer to heal than most physical wounds. These wounds are more subtle and can be hidden from one’s self. It is important to dig into the hurts of our life. How we deal with these hurts is important. In the book, Feelings Buried Alive Never Die, the author associates physical symptoms with different kinds of feelings. The feelings of hurt can come out as anxiety, depression, anger, rage, fear, guilt, resentment, need for approval, rejection, overwhelmed burden and also chronic physical pain. Emotional trauma can be trapped in muscles and other parts of our body. The first step is to reveal our hurts. As we talk about them, they are brought into the light. Open up to a trusted person or a counselor or a pastor. Depending on your beliefs, open up to God or your higher power. Pour out your heart and the healing can begin. Give yourself permission and allow yourself to feel whatever feelings you may feel. These feelings are much easier to change if you accept and own them rather than deny them and pretend they don’t exist. The second step is to release those who have wounded you. If you hold onto bitterness, desire to get even, hurt someone back or be revengeful; this leads to your suffering and comes back to haunt you. There can only be momentary satisfaction. For example, eating rat poison doesn’t hurt the other person, it hurts you. Walk in forgiveness and turn the situation over to God, the Universe or Nature. As you forgive, you can give up the bitterness and let it go. Inner peace translates directly to more confidence and better personal and business decisions. An example of release from the book, Feelings Buried Alive Never Die by Karol Truman, is as follows: “If your major feeling is a need for approval then say, Spirit, please locate the origin of my feelings that created such a need for approval in me. With total forgiveness and unconditional love, I allow every physical, emotional and spiritual problem, and inappropriate behavior based on the negative origin recorded in my DNA to transform. I choose approving of myself. I feel approval of myself. I choose being cherished. I choose feeling loved. I feel loved. I am loved. I am connected to all those I love.” The third step to healing our emotional wounds is to replace the lies with the truth. These are the lies that your parents or authority figures told you: You’re no good, you’re a loser, you never do anything right, you’re not good enough, etc. Physical, emotional and sexual abuse are also based on lies. Restore your emotional well-being by replacing the lies with the truth of living a good life and not repeating the lies of the past. The fourth step is to heal the wounds and grief of the past, reshape your life by learning how to be a positive, balanced person. Replace negative feelings with positive feelings. Positive affirmations and prayEVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

ers are examples of how to start this process. This is not always easy to do on your own. Reach out to your trusted person or higher power to restore and reshape your life. This process doesn’t happen overnight so be patient with yourself as life situations arise and bring up past hurts. You can transform undesirable feelings so that they no longer hinder your growth. The fifth step to emotional healing is to reach out with love for others. You can bring hope and healing to others when you are on your journey to healing. To start your personal journey, the resources I have found are a wonderful counselor, an amazing pastor, the book as mentioned above, “Feelings Buried Alive Never Die” and the Oaks of Righteousness Class at the Vineyard Church is the Kansas City Northland. I encourage you to reach out to the resources that speak to you and begin your journey to optimal health today.

Revelations—by Paul Rudy Play Your Own Perfect Instrument

W

ithin us is our own perfect instrument. It comes factory installed, and all we need do is use it! Like any instrument it needs input to produce output, and tuning to resonate fully. All our major nerves and meridians wind their way from our head, through our neck, to the rest of us. In this fifth-chakra passage we inhale breath to create sound with our voice. Learning to use our whole throatchakra instrument involves a feedback cycle of giving through our voice that is, in turn, informed by listening. This complete circuit promotes optimal energy flow and is powerful for tuning our whole body. As the saying goes, the longest distance in the universe is the 18 inches between the human head and heart. This traverse requires negotiating between two most potent instruments: our intellect and intuition. The mind collects, differentiates, classifies, strategizes and connects, while our heart directs the use of all that information. The two sides of our fifth-chakra instrument, making sound and listening, employ both our intuition and intellect, and a holistic path is one that oscillates freely between the wisdom of both. Practicing the strengths of these two allies brings us fully into harmony and balance, and halfway in between that 18-inch distance is a most powerful ally: our voice! The perfect proportions of our body focus around the voice. With words, consonants convey meaning, while vowels carry the energy. Each chakra has a vowel that activates it (IPA: u, oʊ, ʌ, ɒ, aɪ, e and ɪəʳ). We witness this when our body naturally groans in pain with “uh” and “oh” sounds, grounding us. We whimper when we desire comfort of parental energy and we grunt under strain, reflecting the will power of our solar plexus. When something feels right, we sigh with the open “ah” of our heart chakra. The third, fourth and fifth chakra vowels (like sun, heart, and eye) are similar in production (the most open of the vowels), revealing a close connection between our personal will and the necessity to speak (or sing!) our truth through the language of the heart! Toning is a simple way anyone can

begin to bring the receiving and giving halves of the fifth chakra into harmony. Start by singing the most natural tone you can (“ah” on a note without strain). As you do, listen inward, scanning your whole body. Do you feel a vibration anywhere? If so, explore it. Slowly slide the note higher and lower, and see if the vibration gets stronger, or migrates to another place in your body. Next try changing the vowel. Play with it! There is no right or wrong: only your own voice, resonating within, as you listen to the body for which it was made! Try laughing with differing vowels, and listen inward to how it vibrates your body! Laughter makes our chest a drum, which moves lots of energy. Try other forms of play with your voice too! As you listen, listen inward, and bring your third eye online. Feel the subtle vibrations going on in your body. As your listening develops, target specific areas of discomfort through the intention of your voice. Your sharpened listening can be turned to things outside, such as instruments, singing bowls, meditation recordings or all sound in your proximity, even other people’s vibrations. When you can feel those vibrations within you, you can learn to tune your shield to harmonize with all of them. Listening is key, so have fun practicing it! The best way to get to know your fifth -chakra instrument is through using it! Because it is unique, you are the only person who can master it! Ride between the heart and mind freely on the breath of your voice and into your whole body by listening. Your instrument is perfect, and you are the practice room! Please download and enjoy a free meditation track from my SoundCloud page to facilitate your practice! Dr. Paul Rudy, Curator’s Professor at the UMKC Conservatory, is a Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Rome Prize Fellow. He is an award-winning composer for film, electronics, and instruments, who also performs widely in concert, installation, meditation and sound healing venues. Food First!—by Bethany Klug, D.O.

In the Kitchen with Bonnie—by Bonnie Rabicoff

Reverse Peri-Menopausal Weight Gain

Café Tempo

I

help a lot of women through the perimenopausal — the years leading up to menopause—and menopausal transition. One of the top complaints of these women is that they have suddenly put on weight and can’t take it off. As their hormones decline, it can trigger a domino effect of hormone imbalances that cause women to hold on to weight. Hormone replacement can help, but sometimes, the body is stuck in a rut it can’t get out of without—you guessed it — lifestyle changes! Many women say, “I used to be able to eat this or that and not gain weight.” This just goes to show how hormones make us who we are, and why this time of life is called “the change.” It’s also why it’s time for the HealthSpan Metabolic Reset. Eat very low carb, at least for a time. Withholding fruit, except lemons and limes, alcohol and starchy foods such as beans, legumes, bread, pastry and pasta give the body a chance to bring several hormones into balance that control fat storage. I recommend avoiding these foods until one to two pounds per week is lost for three weeks straight. This is a good sign these fat storage hormones are working right. Eat More Vegetables. I suggest six fistsized portions of green and white vegetables daily. Onion, garlic, turnips, radishes and cauliflower are examples of white vegetables. Vegetables reduce inflammation which brings fat storage hormones into balance and are key to reducing sugar cravings. Slowly add back higher carbohydrate foods. Most people start with berries. Add one food at a time being sure to continue to lose one to two pounds per week. If the weight loss stops, then don’t eat that food. Other foods to add back: carrots, beets, winter squash, beans, legumes, gluten-free grains, spelt and kamut. Eventually add in sweeter fruits such as apples, pears, and citrus. Sweet potatoes, parsnips, yams can also be added as long as weight loss continues. Bag Caffeine. It messes with your fat storage hormones in a big way. I suggest taking a long weekend to get through the withdrawal headache and be done with it. It’s

also fine to step down to black, then to green tea. Please avoid decaffeinated beverages. Toxic chemicals are used to remove the caffeine. What to use instead? Try 1/2 fresh lemon squeezed into 8 ounces of water, or 1 - 2 Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar. Or go to HealthSpanKC.com, click on blog and read about fresh vegetable juice and green smoothies, my favorite ways to start the day bright-eyed without caffeine. Nix Dairy. It promotes inflammation and stimulates growth hormones. Exercise. Lower muscle tone is a hallmark of the peri-menopausal and menopausal transitions. Muscle is like a get out of jail free card. It makes those hormones work more effectively. Meditate. I am a huge fan of mindfulness of breathing meditation. It can cultivate self -awareness that creates a space between thought and action, as in deciding to go for a walk with a friend instead of feeding your [insert difficult emotion here] with ice cream. It also reduces fight or flight hormones that cause imbalances in the fat storage hormones. Restorative yoga, tai chi, chi gong and contemplative prayer can do this too. I encourage people to pick one and do it daily even if just for ten minutes. Get Good Sleep. Lousy sleep is another top complaint I hear from peri-menopausal and menopausal women. Sleep hits the reset button on the hormones that control fat burning and storage. While many women sleep better with the suggestions above, there is more to it for many others. Sleeping pills don’t help. Consult an Expert. The speed of 21st century life has made the peri-menopausal and menopausal transition more difficult. A physician who follows a holistic approach may be able to help.

challenging behavior. If you grew up without a clear sense of Safety, Openness, Unity and Love in your life, your nervous system may have become over-stimulated possibly causing it to get stuck on high (often resulting in rage, hyperactivity, hypervigilance, elation/mania, anxiety/ panic, and/or high-risk behavior) or stuck on low (often resulting in depression, disconnection, hopeless/ helpless, exhaustion, and/or numbness). Once you have a sense of the amount of SOUL in your childhood, look at the questions once more thinking about your present day circumstances. Is your life a mirror of your past? Are you experiencing the same level of joy or heartache today as you did in childhood? Are you seeing unhealthy patterns of behavior emerge? Relationships that strive to be Safe, Open, Unified and Loving provide a prime opportunity for healing by creating an environment that allows us to become settled in our body in a new way. Some have been fortunate to find a friend, mentor, colleague or partner with whom they have a SOUL relationship. For others, it starts with developing a SOUL relationship with a healing professional such as a coach, counselor, therapist, etc. Whichever path toward healing and wholeness you pursue, remember, it’s never too late to get some SOUL in your life. March 2015

SOULMAPPING EXPLORATION 1) SAFETY How safe did you feel as a child – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually? Consider your sense of safety around basic needs (food, shelter, money, sex) or more subtle areas like asking for what you wanted, questioning authority, or having privacy. Were family members involved in unsafe activities such as crime, undue risk-taking, or addictive behaviors? What was the emotional or energetic current in the house? Was there raging, criticism, sarcasm, manipulation, neglect, isolation, or long periods of silence?

2) OPENNESS How much openness was there in your family? How were difficult topics handled? Were there secrets, lies, taboo topics? Which parts of yourself or others were deemed acceptable and encouraged and which were discouraged or punished?

3) UNITY Did you feel a sense of comradery and connection in your family or were you lonely? Was there a sense of being on the same team (despite the typical family squabbles) or did some or all of the relationships in the family seem more adversarial? Did you find connection with a group outside of your family? Did you lose anyone close to you before the age of 21, through death, illness, incarceration, mental illness, etc.?

4) LOVE Was there an atmosphere of kindness in your household? Was there a sense that you could count on your family to be there for you in times of trouble? Did you share affection with the members of your family – giving it to them and getting it from them? How was love communicated – through hugs, gifts, praise, money, attention, food? Was love ever withheld, purposefully or unintentionally?

Feature—by Justine SanFilippo How to Naturally Detox

I

once went to a fancy juicing retreat in Martha’s Vineyard for a three-day detox…. on my birthday….. with my mom. Why I thought starving, detoxing, only drinking juice for my birthday and dragging my mom into it was a good idea, I’ll never know. I somehow got through the 3 days of drinking miniscule amounts of juice and some pureed soup. I had no energy, a constant headache and was nauseous. The only relief was when I slept. I lost eight pounds. However, on the fourth day, I had a bowl of soup for lunch with some raw vegetables and all the weight came back. So much for that.

Detoxing: What is It? We’ve heard of juice fasts, master cleanses, detoxing supplements and juicing retreats. Why detox? Detoxing helps the body remove excess toxins. Toxins can come from the environment, from chemicals in foods and beverages, smoking, alcohol and other unhealthy habits. Some people will go to extreme lengths to detox the body in a short period of time. Toxins are stored in the fat cells, so when a person detoxes, the fat cells can shrink. There could be many unpleasant side effects to detoxing such as headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, feeling irritable, fatigue, dizziness, and rashes.

My Experiences with Detoxes I’ve tried several, and I must tell you that fad gimmicks don’t work in the long run. If a person goes into a “detox” with the intention of just cleansing their body (not to lose weight), they could be successful. If

One of my favorite ways to naturally detox is to make a fresh juice drink each morning. This starts off the day right and get a super boost of vitamins and minerals. Check out my favorite recipe below: • 1 apple • 1-2 carrots • ½ cucumber • Dark, leafy greens like kale, spinach or Swiss chard • Parsley • Wedge of lemon

Every single day, the body detoxes naturally through the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs and skin. Eating organic and natural fruit and vegetables, healthy fat, lean protein and unprocessed foods help the body be more efficient. a person only intends to drop weight fast, they will be sorely disappointed that most, if not all of the weight lost will come back the second they eat normal food.

How to Naturally Detox Rather than going on a crazy detox, consider helping your body detox naturally by making smart food and beverage choices. Every single day, the body detoxes naturally through the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs and skin. Eating organic and natural fruit and vegetables, healthy fat, lean protein and unprocessed foods help the body be more efficient. Sweating through exercise helps the detox process as well. Other ways to naturally detox are: • Drink enough water – aim for at least 64 ounces a day (8 cups). • Eliminate or reduce beverages

like sodas (both regular and diet) and alcohol. • Reduce caffeine consumption – caffeine can cause dehydration, which can lead to water retention. • Add a wedge of lemon or lime to your water. • Have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar a day (improves digestion and promotes alkalinity – get the apple cider vinegar with the “mother” in it). • Eat enough fiber (28g/day for women and 35g/day for men). • Add more dark, leafy greens to your diet such as kale, Swiss chard, and spinach. • Drink herbal teas, such as decaf green tea. • Watch the sodium – too much sodium can cause water retention and bloating.

Place the ingredients in a juicer and enjoy! Yum! Then, eat breakfast. How do you know you’ve been successful at naturally detoxing? You’ll have more energy, you’ll sleep better, your stomach won’t be as bloated, and you’ll crave healthier foods rather than junk food. As an added bonus, your skin will be clearer and brighter, your hair will be silkier, and you’ll just feel really good. When you start to follow a healthier lifestyle, you’ll find that when you do fall off the bandwagon and have some sweets, junk food or too much alcohol, you’ll feel it. Listen to your body. It will tell you what it needs (and doesn’t need!). Justine SanFilippo graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Following college, she found her passion in health, wellness, and nutrition, enrolling in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 2005 and becoming a certified health coach. Feature—by Alex Jackson Looking Beyond the Scar

H

ave you ever wondered what happens on the inside of a surgical scar? I recall about 25 years ago my grandfather coming home from an abdominal surgery with staples and buttons attached to the outside of the incision. He looked like an alien to me! Fortunately, the days of the Frankenstein-looking scars are virtually gone thanks to medical advancements like dissolving stitches and surgical adhesives. Visible scar or not, however, a lot is still happening under the skin. Within a few hours of surgery there are adhesions being created by the body. Adhesions are the body’s natural way to heal and repair an injury or wound left from surgery. They are fibrous bands that form abnormal connections extending from one tissue across another. While some adhesions do not cause problems, others can prevent muscle tissues and organs from moving freely. Organs can become twisted, obstructed or pulled from their normal position, creating pain and discomfort within our bodies. Abdominal adhesions are a common complication of surgery and occur in a majority of people who have had abdominal or pelvic procedures. Interestingly enough, we may not notice any symptoms of adhesions or internal scar tissue for months or years after the initial surgery. An unfortunate fact is that adhesions are unavoidable in surgery, and the main conventional medical treatment for adhesions is more surgery. What! More surgery leads to more adhesions. “Where is the logic in this approach...someone please find me a treatment to relieve my discomfort,” you say. I have the answer: Abdominal Integrative Therapy! This is a holistic and non-invasive technique I have perfected over the last decade. Deep abdominal breathwork is integrated with massage to break up abdominal adhesions and increase circulation to damaged and restricted tissue. As a holistic health practitioner dedicated to abdominal health, I have seen thousands of people with post-surgical abdominal adhesions ranging in severity from major to minor. All have received relief from Abdominal Integrative Therapy…I do mean all! People routinely visit my office with more abdominal surgeries than I can count. Their colon, appendix, bladder, uterus or other organs and pathogenic tissues may have been repaired or removed. They may have tightness, pulling or nerve discomfort near the incision scar. Sandra, a patient of mine that was referred by her OB/ GYN had these exact symptoms. She was a 35-year-old

mother that had been suffering from debilitating nerve pain following the caesarean delivery of her child two years prior. Her only request was the ability to play actively with her children again. The adhesions on Sandra's lower pelvis were stiffened and unpliable. This over-contracted fascia resulted in her nerves being trapped, suffocated and starved of vital oxygen and circulation. Abdominal Integrative Therapy proved to be the breakthrough for Sandra. She was elated that all of her scar tissue nerve pain was gone. Afterwards, she described the feeling that a virtual 24/7 tightened belt around her abdomen simply disappeared. Treating abdominal or pelvic adhesions is only fully successful if the practitioner is also able to loosen any respiratory diaphragm restrictions. The diaphragm is our major muscle for breathing. The descending aorta passes through it, delivering blood supply to the abdomen and lower extremities. It is located at the base of the sternum and attaches to the lower rib cage. Deep abdominal breathing is necessary to aide in the separation of fibrous tissue and provides an internal massage to adhered organs, making it a key factor in reestablishing healthy tissue. A study in Digestive Surgery showed that more than 90 percent of patients develop adhesions following open abdominal surgery and 55–100 percent of women EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

13 25

develop adhesions following pelvic surgery. Since there is usually a time lapse between surgery and symptoms, many get misdiagnosed. A woman can even develop fertility issues from pelvic adhesions that surround an ovary, fallopian tube or uterus. Common laparoscopic procedures used to treat endometriosis will often leave a women’s pelvis with unwanted scar tissue and adhesions. Often we will not connect a surgery such as gall bladder removal, hysterectomy or hernia repair with digestive problems occurring months or years later. A small bowel obstruction is a significant consequence of post-surgical adhesions and can occur outside the area of the incision scar. Abdominal connective tissue has a spider web-like structure that provides a specific residence for each organ. The characteristic of this web is such that when you pull one end all contents (organs) can be shifted. When post-surgical adhesions are involved, abdominal organs are more prone to kinking and twisting. One possible complication can be a bowel obstruction caused when an adhesion pulls or kinks the small intestine and prevents the flow of content through the digestive tract. I have seen progressive bowel adhesions that limit a person to a liquid only diet. You can imagine how the inability to eat solid food takes a heavy toll on one’s emotional state. The same process of deep abdominal breathwork with massage is applied for relieving any bowel obstructions and restoring the patient to a normal diet. My advice is to get any and all scars massaged no matter how old or new. Remember to allow four to six weeks after surgery before getting treatment. It is always a good idea to consult with the therapist and or physician before getting any type of treatment. I have learned that people are always relieved when they finally understand where their discomfort originates, and even more astonished with the results after receiving an Abdominal Integrative Therapy session. I invite you to look beyond the scar as I did with my grandfather. The healing connections that lie beneath the surface may provide the answer for which you have been searching.

Feature—by Kerry Fremerman The Seasons of Acupuncture

T

he Chinese, as strong observers of nature, believe that when our connection to nature is strong, we have better health. In Chinese medicine, the theory of the Five Elements is a philosophy that sees the world in dynamic states or phases of constant change. Classical Five Element Acupuncture differs from other forms of acupuncture in the way it diagnoses and treats illness according to what is called the Causative Factor (CF). The goal of Classical Five Element acupuncture, according to ancient Taoism (a Chinese philosophy based on living simply, honestly, and in harmony with nature) is to bring the body, mind and spirit into balance with the elements of nature: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. These five elements correspond to five seasons: Winter, spring, summer, late summer and fall. Professor J.R. Worsley (1923 – 2003), a British osteopathic physician and Master of Acupuncture, is credited with bringing Classical Five-Element Acupuncture to the West. Professor Worsley says that every human being has one true cause of disease that results from the element that is most out of balance for them: that being the Causative Factor. The Causative Factor says that a person's weak link or root cause of illness is coming from the distressed element. Said another way, the CF is the element that has been injured by internal or external causes, including hereditary factors. The CF diagnosis is usually made at the first visit for treatment, but sometimes isn't known with certainty until later treatments. When the CF is diagnosed and treated the cause of disease resolves, and the symptoms of the imbalance disappear. Each of the five elements is associated with 12 meridians that correspond to 10 organs and two functions in the body. Earth corresponds to the stomach and spleen, Metal to the colon and lungs, Fire to the heart, small intestine (and two functions, circulation/sex and triple heater/temperature regulator), Water to the bladder and kidneys, Wood to the gallbladder and liver. Each organ has a specific season that can weaken it or strengthen it. When something in the body, mind or spirit is out of balance, it is more susceptible to illness as the seasons change. The season of Fire (summer) is a time of luxurious growth. Everything is in bloom and begins to bear fruit and comes alive. Fire gives us warmth, love and

a passion for life. The heart is responsible for order and control of all the other organs. The small intestine assimilates and separates the pure from the impure of the nourishment we take in. Circulation/sex protects the heart and regulates blood flow and sexual secretions. The triple heater is the temperature regulator of the body. When the Fire element is out of balance, there are symptoms such as a lack of joy, love or warmth, confusion and panic, heart problems, poor circulation, numbness or tingling in the limbs, hot or cold flashes, arthritis, and

shoulder or elbow problems. The season of Earth (late summer) is the time to harvest the abundance of summer. The days of summer are getting shorter and cooler and there is a hint of fall in the air. Earth is the provider and mother that feeds and sustains us. It gives us stability, balance and keeps us grounded. The stomach receives nourishment and prepares it for digestion. When the Earth element is imbalanced, there can be symptoms of needing sympathy, obsessive thoughts, worry, self-doubt, ulcers, indigestion, muscle pain and tenderness, poor or excessive appetite and menstrual irregularities. The season of Metal (autumn) is a time of harvesting for the winter. The leaves begin to fall back to the earth from where they came. It represents the minerals and salt of the earth. This is

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

14 26

a time of change, transition and sometimes nostalgia and letting go of the past. Metal gives us our sense of quality and value. It is involved with the intake of life-giving energies and the discharge of toxins. The lungs are the receiver of the chi from the heavens, breathing in the air. The colon gets rid of toxins and waste. When Metal is out of balance there are symptoms of excess grief or sorrow, diarrhea or constipation, skin problems and asthma. The season of Water (winter) is a time of rest, withdrawal and hibernation. It is a time of stillness and quiet and conservation of energy. The trees are bare and the days are short. It gives us determination and willpower. The kidneys filter the blood and keep the body clean and in balance. The bladder is responsible for eliminating the excess of water and waste filtered through the kidneys and storing our water reserves. When Water is out of balance, there are symptoms such as phobias or fear, urinary problems, high blood pressure, brittle joints, dry skin, backache, problems with perspiration, ear problems. The season of Wood (spring) is a time of birth and growth, vision and hope for the future. It is the greening season when flowers bloom, a time for planting seeds and new beginnings. Wood is seen in a tree growing upward to the sky and growing deep roots in the earth. The liver stores the blood, filters its toxins and promotes the free flow of chi in the body. The gallbladder stores and empties the bile. When Wood is out of balance we experience symptoms of frustration, anger, vertigo, ligament and tendon problems, dry brittle nails, migraines and eye problems. In our fast-paced and stressful world we often fail to effectively deal with our stressors until we feel so sick we can no longer ignore our symptoms. We have often waited so long to get the help and support we need that our symptoms have developed into costly illnesses. Your health is important. Take time every day to mediate, be present and observe nature and some things you can appreciate about the current season.

Books Interview with Nick Ortner, Author of The Tapping Solution for Pain Relief

D

o you suffer from chronic pain? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, more than 100 million Americans deal with this lifechanging issue every day. And if you’re like most of them, you’ve tried all the normal “solutions”: doctors, injections, medications, and surgeries. While these all have a place in healing, they have fallen short in dealing with the pain epidemic. So what can you do? In The Tapping Solution for Pain Relief, Nick Ortner presents a startling alternative. He lays out a step-by -step plan that teaches you how to use tapping, or EFT (emotional freedom techniques), to reduce or eliminate chronic pain. Looking at the scientific research surrounding pain, stress, and tapping, he opens your eyes to just how powerful tapping can be, and then outlines tips and techniques to address pain in both the short and long term.

Why use tapping for chronic pain relief over other pain relief treatments?

How does tapping relieve chronic pain? There’s a lot of research being done at places like Stanford University that is giving us a better understanding of chronic pain. Back pain is a great example. It’s the #1 cause of chronic pain, with over 30 million Americans and many more around the world suffering from it. That pain is often diagnosed as the result of a herniated disc, but studies show that a significant percentage of people with a herniated disc have zero back pain. We don’t know for sure whether a herniated disc even causes chronic pain! Thanks to recent studies of chronic pain, we know that stress and negative emotions like fear and anger increase pain. Those emotions are part of the body’s stress response, and that stress response can also turn short-term pain, like pain we experience after an injury, into long-term chronic pain. Tapping interrupts that stress response, including significantly lowering levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol. By putting the body into a more relaxed state, tapping allows the body to do what it’s meant to do, which is heal itself and relieve the pain.

The short answer is because tapping works, has no negative side effects, and can be used anywhere. In addition to providing pain relief, tapping also relieves stress and improves physical, emotional and mental well-being. I’ve worked with a lot of people who, after years of taking pain medicine, have been able to stop taking it since they began using tapping for their pain. I’ve also seen people with degenerative conditions, and very dire diagnoses get pain relief. To start, though, I recommend that people add tapping into what they’re already doing to manage their pain. As tapping relieves their pain, they can then work with doctors and health professionals to figure out what else they still may or may not need in addition to tapping.Yes, tapping can provide powerful pain relief for pain from fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic migraines, RSD (also called CRPS), pain from an injury, surgery, degenerative conditions, and much more. It works on pain throughout the body, and also on pain that has been chronic for years, even decades. The list goes on and on. I always encourage people to just try it, and keep using it until they get the relief they desire.

Does tapping relieve real physical pain, or just psychosomatic pain? That’s an important question. The answer is yes, tapping relieves real physical pain. This is not imaginary pain. It’s very real physical pain, and in many cases it’s excruciating. When we discuss the mindbody science around chronic pain, we’re talking about how stress and emotions work with the body to create real physical pain. It’s a new understanding of chronic pain. Tapping targets that pain on a physical and emotional level, which is why it’s so effective for pain relief.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

15 27

How will tapping impact the future of chronic pain treatment? Tapping provides safe, effective pain relief without any negative side effects, so there’s growing interest in tapping from medical professionals who are open to alternative healing modalities. More nurses, doctors and other health professionals are learning tapping and using it with patients. My hope is that someday tapping will become part of standard medical treatment for chronic pain and other conditions. It is an incredibly powerful treatment to use in hospitals, pre and post-surgery, and of course as a preventive treatment. It has also had great results with treating PTSD, which often is accompanied by chronic pain. Vets, as well as trauma survivors in places like Rwanda and here in Newtown, CT since the Sandy Hook school shootings, are getting pain relief and overcoming emotional and mental trauma because of tapping. NICOLAS ORTNER is CEO of The Tapping Solution, LLC, a company with a mission to bring simple, effective, natural healing into the mainstream through Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or “tapping.” Tapping is a healing modality that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels March 2015 Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Happy birthday Pisces! Your year starts with a powerful total eclipse in your sign! It is validating your intuition — you’re intelligent on more dimensions than the average person! Trust the messages you get in meditation and live from your truth. Think supportive thoughts about yourself. Sudden changes at work bring prosperity and joy, so be fearless if things shake up.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) This month’s eclipse stimulates dreams and helps you visualize exciting future changes. Meditate for more guidance after you complete each step in front of you. In early August you can manifest major results if you stay consistent! You can also be starting a new relationship that’s very sexy and exciting (or have a renaissance in a current partnership). Enjoy everything, just don’t let todays’s thrills divert you from long-range goals. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) This month’s eclipse asks you to contemplate how helpful your friends really are. Do you have built up resentments? Maybe it’s because they are less evolved than you. It could be time to seek new friends as thoughtful and spiritual as you. Don’t put up with crumbs! Also make a beautiful peaceful place in your house to meditate. You need a serene environment for a serene mind. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You can have exciting opportunities with work that you’ve been wishing for! The total eclipse opens many doors. Supervisors have been putting in good words for you. Or, if looking for new jobs, you’re exciting to the hiring team. In relationships, things become deeper. Be sure to express your positive emotions to your partner, even if the intimacy

frightens you. This cements your bond and helps your partner open up more to you. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Let your intuition guide your career. Get in touch with your soul through daily meditation. Just five minutes of quiet time every day is enough to open the channel. You’ll gain insights on forgotten talents, or on ones you underrate, but others value. You’re better than you think! Be bold and let your light shine! Prosperity can come from a source you overlooked or gave up on — a big tax return, a bonus from a critical supervisor, or a loan you gave long ago. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Let relationships unfold gently. You might want to jump in too fast, or the other person could be overeager. With the eclipse this month, it’s easy to get emotionally overwhelmed. By advancing slowly, yet steadily, you’ll be in a solid place six months form now. Also, be prudent about spending. You’re on a high now and that’s great. But meditate for balance so you can see all options clearly. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) This month’s eclipse tests your willingness to release past relationship issues. Things are being stirred up to be cleared out. Breathe through the feelings, journal about them and let them go! Resist your ego self who

wants to poison the present with old junk! The roots might go back to your parents’ bond — but you can create better future karma. You’re not doomed to patterns! Happiness awaits on the other side. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Take control of your mind — especially around body image, health and diet. Meditate on your divine beauty and the wholeness of each cell. Don’t buy into your own negativity or society’s manipulative messages. The energy you salvage from not tormenting yourself with thoughts will channel into relationships. You’ll feel present and loved, as well as blissful and loving! Seek out friends who stay positive to reinforce your new mindset. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) This month’s eclipse asks you to incorporate fun into your life! Other transits are pushing you to work hard and be aware of your finances, maybe even re-budgeting. That’s great, but what about nurturing your playfulness? So many intuitive solutions come when you rest your mind through play. Or you might do art, dance, be with pets or kids, even cook. Creating balance makes you energized, successful and serene! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Like Leo pals, be cautious in relationships. It’s too easy to get caught in too much enthusiasm and then burn out. Allow love to develop gently and it will last! Make time for your spiritual practice; don’t abandon your soul! If partnered, a shot of divine energy will enliven a dull connection. Be active together and more sexiness will stir up! Meditate or practice yoga together and see each other with new eyes. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) This month’s eclipse brings up subconscious “stuff” — so think before you speak or act! Intense emotions can be related to past events that

March 2015

aren’t even connected to the person or situation. Meditate and journal to find roots of feelings — they could have childhood beginnings or even be past life patterns! If about present day, you’ll be poised and calm if you need to do or say anything. Cleansing like this makes for intimacy, serenity and even prosperity! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) An amazing, spiritual relationship can start — or your present one gains new depth and love! Aquarians are “in their heads”, so meditate to go beyond thoughts and release logic. As intuition flows you’ll be more peaceful and attract higher energy people. As mental stress is relieved, current folks regard you more positively. Since intellect is your secularity blanket, releasing thoughts is a daily yoga practice for you. Stick with it fearlessly to maintain bliss!
