Dear Friend, A time of harvest, fall is such a plentiful time, filled with the various rewards for our labors. It’s a time of gathering in and honoring, as well as collecting for the seasons to come. It’s also the perfect season to simplify living in anticipation of the slow winter months. Several years ago I wrote my publisher’s letter while sitting near my herb garden. The butterflies fluttered gently above the hyssop while a hummingbird sampled one of the few remaining gladiolas. Seeing the tomatoes full and red and the basil so lush and green, I was excited about soon harvesting and preserving those glorious fruits of the land. I looked forward to gathering the seeds from the cosmos and zinnia plants to save and replant the next year. This year, living in town, my garden is smaller, but still lush. Just looking at the blooming oregano, I remember the connection I felt while planting and caring for each plant throughout the summer. I see the full bushes of thyme and acknowledge the fruits of my labor. And in each plant I see the bounty that will carry me through the winter, each bite reminding me in the cold of winter of the joy and warmth I felt this summer and will soon feel again. Fall is an immense time of reflection and renewal for me. It’s my favorite time of year to rest and renew. I’ve noticed several times this month I’ve written on my gratitude calendar, “fall air.” Even though I crave the busyness of spring, the closure of fall brings immense peace. The season nudges me to remember to be present. I see the glory of life, the rewards of my love-labors and the preparations fore change. As the squirrels gather in their nuts and threes lose their leaves, I too will prepare for winter by acknowledging the bounty in my life and the glory of the season.

News... Energy Healing Mentoring Program

Core Star Energy Healing School announces it’s new Energy Healing Mentoring Program Core Star Energy Healing School has had a 3-year energy healing education program for the last 18 years. We have had numerous conversations with prospective students indicating that they want more information and techniques on energy healing but don’t have the time or resources to commit to a 3-year program. Because of this, we have developed the Core Star Energy Healing Mentoring Program. This program is designed to assist Reiki and other energy healing practitioners and massage therapists with a way to obtain additional formal instruction, tools and practice under the supervision of Core Star instructors. The program will consist of instruction about the human energy field, energy healing techniques and exercises the will encourage the unfolding of your high sense perception abilities. We have found over the years that experienced Reiki practitioners are able to quickly deepen and

strengthen their abilities to work with Reiki energy as well as have a broader set of tools to assist clients. Comments we hear from these students are like “My clients are telling me that their healings are more complete than before” or “I am able to run much more energy now that I have the new skills and knowledge.” This program will begin in November and be set up in weekend or during week sessions of 12 hrs per group mentoring session. They will also qualify for 12 hrs of Massage Continuing Education. The Core Star Energy Healing School was founded in 1994 by Jim Crabtree who continues to be a consultant and is currently run by the Kansas City Healing Project, Inc. under the direction of John Hoefer. John is a graduate of the 3-yr Core Star program, a Usui and Kaurna Reiki Master and has also studied with Rosalyn Buryere, Sonia Choquette and other leading teachers. For more information please call John Hoefer at 913-831-4422 or see www.CoreStarEnergyHealing.com for dates, cost and other information.

he human body/mind perceives differences in a variety of responses. One response is to be fearful, feel threatened and fight or run. Another response, at the other end of the spectrum, is to be curious, investigate and befriend. This internal conflict is mirrored in the human community. As individuals or larger groups feel threatened, they may respond with anger, hatred and a need to subjugate. Others may have the response of reaching out, learning about the other, creating dialogue and harmony. In each of us there is a perceptual war about the outer reality. Ryoto Kanai of the University College London, in a study published in April, 2011, suggested that brain differences play a part in our reaction to environmental stimuli. Science Daily states “Individuals who call themselves liberal tend to have larger anterior cingulate cortexes, while those who call themselves conservative have larger amygdalas.” The former helps us to cope with conflicting information and the latter indicates a greater ability to recognize a threat. In this case, the person with the larger anterior cingulate cortex, may be more open to new experiences and better able to handle different kinds of information simultaneously. The person with the larger amygdala would be more sensitive to threat or anxiety in the face of uncertainty. Though there have been several recent studies with similar findings, this is only a beginning in looking at brain differences explaining different responses. Other factors that may contribute to varying reactions are personality type, individual experiences and environmental factors. One theme that stands out in the various explanations is that in one scenario a person open to information is feeling more in control; and in the opposite, feels threatened and fearful. We are all capable of both reactions. We need both. The part of us that is open to change and new experiences helps us grow and learn. The part of us that is more fearful, helps us to be more cautious, possibly escaping danger or hurtful experiences. So, as you or I face the problems of our daily lives compounded by the economic recession, the drought and severe weather effecting our mood, food and other resources, the contentious political climate, local and world-wide conflict

about many issues; we are thrown into our unique mind/body reaction. If we tend toward the "open" side, we may be more optimistic: but, we may need some good boundaries or a reality check. On the other hand if we are more fearful, threatened or anxious--we may need to step back, gather the facts and get some perspective. The media, advertising and political campaigns tend to feed the fear side of our brain and we may have to hunt for correct data. It would seem that public information sources know that fearful messages feed powerlessness. Information that is more emotionally neutral helps us to make better choices and feel powerful. When we step into the place of clarity and peace, we can embrace differences while keeping good personal boundaries. Armed with good information, our whole brain and a discerning spirit, we resonate with John Hume’s advice, “Difference is of the essence of humanity. Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict. The answer to difference is to respect it. Therein lies a most fundamental principle of peace--respect for diversity.” As we each accept and respect our own unique inner diversity, we can also do the same for all other living beings.

Let’s Get Naked—by Heidi Alfrey What’s Eating You?

T

his month, I ask the question: What's eating you? Shannon Hodge gives us an authentic and revealing account of her escape from life: food. My food story goes back farther than I can remember. At four years old I was eating french fries, with plenty of ketchup, at a restaurant. The waitress assumed I was done and took away my plate. I knew I wasn't done and proceeded to cry, scream and wail. I didn't think it was anything special to want sweets, pizza and chips all the time. It seemed like everyone around me did the same thing. I would eat until I was beyond full, half aware of what I was doing and half watching television, then stumble upstairs to pass out in a sort of food-coma sleep and wake up still full the next morning. During my Jr. year, I looked in the mirror and decided I was FAT.

Somewhere between Jr. and Senior year, I got my hands on some feminist literature about loving your body. I started learning about real nutrition and dove into exploring this idea of “self acceptance.” My love for myself grew, and so did my body. I still had cravings. I still went to food for comfort, and I still wasn't eating the right foods for me. I tried to ignore what was happening but eventually got up to around 160lbs. And to boot, I got very sick. The years of starving, binging, junk food, sugar, and eating when I wasn't hungry caught up with me. So I went looking for help. An acquaintance of mine invited me to do a program in her Health Coaching practice. In one month, my energy was back. By three months, my digestion was dramatically improved, it didn't hurt when I ate anymore and I was even losing weight. It was truly incredible. In working with my coach, I discovered Geneen Roth, a well-

known author and teacher about Emotional Eating (a term coined by her for people who eat in response to emotions and feelings). I decided to go to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and become a Health Coach as well. I did some traveling, which included two, 10-day silentmeditation retreats. This meant sitting and feeling the feelings and sensations in my body for 12 hours a day. Later, I began to follow the guidelines in Geneen Roth's books, things like sitting down to eat, not beating myself up for eating, tasting the food and so on.

I learned to cry when I was sad, sleep when I was tired, walk when I was anxious, call a friend when I was lonely, and so on...instead of eating. I started playing music. I went looking for the very easiest instrument I could find, and it was a ukulele with nylon strings. I was gifted one and started writing songs and singing. I would simply write about what was real for me. It was another option — instead of eating — singing My heart melted and I started to believe that people not only liked me, but loved me. I felt like I could finally say “I'm DONE” and have it be TRUE. I'm DONE with the obsessing, and the worry, well, about FOOD anyway! I know exactly when to eat, how much, and what. I know how to deal with my feelings. My life is full and rich with all the ups and downs. I'm on an adventure of having a Health Coaching practice so I can teach other women who relate to my story how they

Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes Ancient Key to Happiness

I

posted on a flip chart the “Keys to Yoga Happiness” as interpreted by the father of yoga, Patanjali. Several students at the Yoga School asked to take a photo of the chart while others hovered over notebooks writing the script. I read this philosophy 30 years ago and feel now I’m just understanding and living it from the inside. I paraphrase now as every time I quote this stuff someone writes me of a misquote. This is not literal: “The moments (see the word “moments” not hours or days) that make us happy have two things in common. For this or that reason, 1. We let go of the past (i.e. forgive ourselves for our mistakes) and 2. We ease and/ or stop the worry of our future.” This is a complex undertaking. Most often it happens in yoga Savasana or meditation or altered state. At times we find happiness beyond space and time in a moment of a daydream or a walk in nature. It can happen in prayer, in a feeling of great love, in a magical moment of transcendent awareness unique to each of us. Mark Twain said most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. Happiness first is a choice. Today, no matter where I go or who I see, I will seek happiness and peace. This sets the cadence for a powerful intent and quietly helps to live the philosophy. I then wrote: “Another person’s anger, gossip, worry, fear, control issues, etc. have nothing to do with me. My focus is to remain in the space of love and high esteem and keep my feelings calm and peaceful. Their stuff is not my stuff. Now in this place, I do no harm.” Doing “no harm” is key to states one and two of yoga called Yama and Niyama. The first is doing no harm to others with my words, actions, thoughts or deeds. That means no gossip! The second is to do not harm to myself with my own thoughts or negative ego. I think we work on these for life, always becoming more skilled. In a translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (there are 100’s) by Chester Messenger, he notes that this classical text of Indian philosophy gives threads on yoga or union, are extremely terse, stating concisely and often precisely, essential points or techniques. This meditative discipline or the yoga of the eight steps, which may be listed as follows: 1. Restraint: nonvio-

lence, not lying, not stealing, not lusting and nonattachment 2. Observances: cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study and surrender to the Supreme God 3. Posture or physical exercises 4. Breath control 5. Sublimation or withdrawal from the senses 6. Attention 7. Concentration 8. Meditation. As I list these they feel like a group of stagnant words, yet may serve each of us as a powerful map to happiness. With these tools we focus on love, not fear, as in duality it is impossible to be in the place of love and fear at the same time. “Just why are you so happy today?” a friend asked. Well, I’ve focused on the keys to happiness for two weeks. What we focus upon, we create. Feels grand!

Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Wise Woman Approach to Pre and Post Menopause

I

n her book, The Wisdom of Menopause, Christiane Northrup, M.D. challenges conventional medicine. Dr. Northrup says, “The change” or menopause is not simply a collection of physical problems to be “fixed” — whether with hormones or herbs — but, a mindbody revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth. There is a connection between menopause and a woman’s emotional and spiritual life. The choices a woman makes at this time in her life, from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet, either secure her health and well-being for the rest of her life, or put her future at risk.” Menopause is defined as no menstrual periods for 12 months. The time prior to actually stopping your periods and starting to have symptoms of hormonal changes can be five to 10 years. This premenopausal time is caused by a decrease in progesterone and therefore the estrogen hormone is dominant. Estrogen dominant symptoms can include: irregular menstrual periods, excessive bleeding with periods, bloating, breast swelling and tenderness, mood swings like irritability and depression, weight gain around the middle and hips, and also premenstrual headaches. Other estrogen dominant symptoms include ovarian cysts, cystic and lumpy breasts, endometriosis, anxiety and an easy-to-anger mood. Some women have minimal symptoms of pre-menopause and just glide through gracefully. These women handle stress well, have a healthy lifestyle and positive relationships. The next step in the “change” is to stop having menstrual periods and estrogen drops off rapidly over a few weeks to months. Low estrogen symptoms can include: hot flashes, night sweats, non-restful sleep, heart palpitations, fuzzy thinking, vaginal dryness, low sex drive and moodiness. Low testosterone often accompanies or precedes the drop in estrogen and can cause symptoms of decreased sex drive, decreased overall energy and stamina, along with decreased ability to build muscle and thinning pubic hair. These varied symptoms can be caused due to stress on the thyroid and adrenal glands, as well as the brain neurotransmitters during pre and post menopause. Many women start into menopause with exhausted resources. The most common stressors that women may face at this time are: excessive and unremitting worry, anger, guilt, anxiety or fear, depression, excessive or lack of exercise, exposure to toxins, chronic allergies, overwork, late hours, insufficient sleep, surgery, chronic illness or unhealed trauma or injury. Because of the significant impact menopause may bring to women’s lives,

there are many and varied treatment possibilities. Start by being proactive and work on lifestyle factors. If you are still experiencing significant symptoms, there are herbs and over-the-counter natural progesterone creams that can be very effective. Dr. Christiane Northrup’s book, The Wisdom of Menopause, has several considerations for menopause as well as adrenal and thyroid support. If all lifestyle and nutraceutical approaches are not successful, then a balanced approach using individualized bioidentical hormone replacement can be considered. These prescription-strength hormones are prescribed by physicians and prepared by compounding pharmacies using extracts from soybeans and yams. The molecular structure of these hormones are designed to be an exact match to the human body. These bioidentical hormones can be given in several forms, including capsules, troches, creams or suppositories. Even though they are natural, monitoring of hormone levels is advised as well as annual gynecology exams. Side effects can occur, so normal precautions and close monitoring by a physician is recommended. Approaching menopause is not an easy, one-size-fits all answer. Some women may need or want hormone replacement therapy, some simply don’t! In my practice of medicine, I enjoy a partnership with women on their journey through menopause — assessing their individual situations, educating about the details, and guiding them in their choices. The choices may be nutritional and herbal support, neurotransmitter support, prescription hormones, emotional and spiritual growth or a combination of these approaches. My recommendations are: educate yourself, add a large dose of intuition, prayer and meditation while continuing to eat healthy and exercise. Yes, you can proceed through this transition with boldness, poise and grace. Nancy Russell, M.D. is a holistic Internal medicine physician and has practiced in the Kansas City northland for 30 years. Dr. Russell blends traditional and alternative medicine in her holistic medical practice. As a founding member of the American Board of Holistic medicine, she is board certified in holistic medicine. he greatest obstacles to eating healthy are often in our minds. We are rarely conscious of them, so no wonder we’re frustrated and discouraged when we revert to old unhealthy habits. Let’s talk about two of these obstacles and a way to overcome them. Eating to De-Stress Digestion is a vegetative activity. We must chill out for it to occur properly. If you are stressed and need to digest, your body will calm you down. Many of us have figured this out, at least subconsciously. We eat to calm down. The paradox is that when we de-stress with food, we inadvertently create more stress for ourselves. Eating for Love

Directions: Heat sauté skillet to medium high. Add olive oil. Sautee the onion for two minutes then the chard until leaves become bright green. Deglaze the pan with red wine vinegar. Add the sugar. Simmer until sugar has dissolved. Season to taste. For the Potato Flan Ingredients: 5 large Idaho potatoes peeled 2 egg yolks olive oil salt & pepper Directions: Shred potatoes and place in salted water. Drain and rinse. Squeeze water out of potatoes using several paper towels. In a mixing bowl place potatoes, 2 egg yolks, salt, pepper and mix. In a non stick omelet pan that is heated to medium high, add olive oil. When oil is hot drop potato mixture in pan filling it to its edge. Using a wooden spatula, press potatoes down. Brown completely before flipping. Brown on second side. Place on a cutting board and cut into quarters. For the Colby Cheese Wrapped in Maple-Cured Pepper Bacon Ingredients: 4 strips of maple-cured pepper bacon (no nitrates, please) four ½ inch by ½ inch square pieces of Colby Cheese Directions: Place bacon in a 350 degree oven and cook until bacon has rendered most of its fat, but is not crisp. Drain on paper towel. Place bacon on a cutting board. Place cheese at one end and roll, covering the cheese. Place on sheet pan seam side down and freeze. To serve, cook cheese wraps in a 400 degree oven for about 3 to 4 minutes. Bacon should be crispy and cheese should be soft, but not melted.

Mindfulness is the ability to be aware of what is going on in and around us in the present moment, with the purpose of discovering what makes our life better — more peaceful, content and happy — and what gets in the way. We can practice mindfulness in every area of our lives, including eating. It’s as simple as noticing the look and smell of your food, its texture and taste as you chew, allowing it to become liquid before swallowing and stopping when you are full. I like to put my fork down between bites which encourages me to give my full attention to the food in my mouth, instead of rushing ahead to the next bite. Then notice how you feel after you finish, as well as two and four hours later. Another way to practice mindful eating is to stop and ask yourself if you are physically hungry. If you are not hungry, put the food down, stop and breathe. After a few breaths, see if you can identify your real need.

What comes to mind when you think of sweet tasting foods: birthday parties, holidays and other times that make us feel happy and loved. What comes to mind when you think of vegetables? Medicine or being coerced by your parents to take three bites so you could have dessert or go out and play. It’s no surprise that at a deep level we associate sweet food with pleasure and vegetables with punishment. No wonder so many of us gag and grimace with every bite of anything Developing mindfulness green and turn to pastries, requires patience, and the cookies, pasta, and ice cream when we feel stressed, down or support of other practitioners overwhelmed. The Trap of Irrational Thinking

6 Insights for Living a Simplified Life

H

oes your life seem unnecessarily complicated? Are you ready to pack it all up and relocate to a dream destination where you can find peace, serenity and a simpler life? If so, take heart – you’re not alone! “We live in an ever complicated world where balancing family, work, and personal needs is as challenging as juggling hot coals,” said spiritual visionary Panache Desai. “You can sustain the imbalance for a while, but eventually you will get burned.” A resident of Naples, Florida, Desai describes himself as “a catalyst for vibrational transformation.” When he’s not consulting with his clients and managing family commitments, a busy schedule keeps him webcasting to a growing global community, as well as traveling across the U.S. and around the world. But this doesn’t prevent him from practicing what he preaches. “It’s very easy for me to get pulled in lots of directions too,” he said. “However, every activity that I engage in stems from a foundation of internal harmony.” Schedules, deadlines, to-do lists and the increasing demands of the day-in and day-out can quickly propel you into stress and overwhelm. But being able to embody inner-peace allows you to navigate life’s twists and turns with spaciousness, the cornerstone of simplicity. “Running away from an overwhelming routine, challenging relationships, an unfulfilling job or escaping to a dream destination is not how you create a life of simplicity,” explained Desai. “Life doesn’t need to get simpler. It’s the inner simplicity with which you meet life that determines the level of grace and ease that enables you to navigate your experience.”

ow often do you hear the term irrational? Like so many terms coined by psychiatry, it’s been misunderstood and misapplied as a label equivalent to acting crazy. Not so. A thought is irrational when it’s illogical or unreasonable AND triggers emotional stress. This means that not only do you feel stress when you react with an automatic thought pattern that triggers fear, but you’re also stressed when and BECAUSE your thoughts aren’t logical or reasonable. So you can use logic and reasonableness as additional tools to identify and unplug the stress component of negative thoughts that roll around in your head. This is great news, because many of us think that feeling scared or anxious is a sign of weak character. What caus es irrational thoughts? Think about your patterns of reacting. When you encounter a new or unexpected situation, is your first thought usually fearful? But fear isn’t about facts. Fear happens when you put a negative spin on a situation. In other words, your interpretation of the event causes your anxiety. Take a moment to pinpoint your patterns of irrational thinking. Specifically, what habitual thoughts indicate that you’ve left logic and reason behind you? Here are three types of irrational thinking that I often see with my clients. 1) Overreacting with an exaggerated interpretation of your experience (a.k.a. borrowing trouble). For example, when your boss is grumpy, you jump to the illogical conclusion that it means you’re going to get fired. Every leap in logic is a jump to a likely false conclusion. Like Chicken Little clucking, “the sky is falling,” you overreact to your interpretation of the situation, feeling upset before there’s a valid reason to be. There could be dozens of other causes for your boss’s foul mood, none of which has anything to do with you. 2) Exaggerating the importance of an experience. For instance, you’ll feel anxious if you think: I can’t bear being alone.

This is an unreasonable exaggeration. What’s true is this: You can bear loneliness. Sure, it’s uncomfortable and frustrating; but, you’ll survive. 3) Presuming the worst isn’t logical or reasonable because you waste energy (and lose power) when you get upset about a situation that hasn’t happened yet — and might not ever happen. This attitude is perpetuated in our society by the belief that it’s smart to fear anything that’s unknown or uncertain (we erroneously call it being cautious). Another reason you’ll have irrational thoughts is when there’s a gap in your reasoning. In this case, you’ll think you’re acting rationally when you’re not. This often happens when you try to rationalize avoiding doing something you know needs to be done. In relationships, it’s when that subtle inertia takes over: I really don’t want to date this person any more; but, I won’t tell them tonight because we have plans for a fun night out. Or, because their dog just died. Or, it’s raining. Even the flimsiest excuse will enable you to duck doing the dirty deed. Your strong desire to avoid the discomfort you’ll feel if they get upset trumps your reasonable desire for honesty. There’s no need to keep channeling Chicken Little. Follow the thread of logic. Identify the rational, reasonable response; and…let go of the fear of the sky falling on your head.

An Interview with Panache Desai

Here are some of Desai’s tips for creating inner simplicity: • Live in the moment … as much as you are able. If you are at work but reliving an argument from the previous evening, your energy is being redirected away from what you should be focused on to something you can’t change in the moment. Living in the past or for the fu-

self the more you will learn to say no.

ture is a serious energy drain. Commit fully to what you are doing right now, the creed for living in the present moment. No single thing can more radically shift your state of mind than this simple practice. • Turn stressful relationships into opportunities for growth. Blaming those around you for your internal state of being or running away from stressful relationships will never allow you to authentically embody inner peace. Your exhusband, mother-in-law, stepchildren and boss are your greatest teachers. They are catalysts for what is unresolved within you. Feel the rage, sadness, rejection and insecurities they stirup. Being fully present to what you are feeling diffuses the emotional charges exploding within and exponentially increases your internal level of spaciousness. Begin to use the blessing of these stressful relationships as an opportunity to expand into a place of peace within yourself. • Disconnect from technology. With the increasing availability of gadgets that keep you connected to a never-ending stream of sensory stimulation and overload, you are overwhelming your central nervous system and starving your spirit of the serenity it requires to rejuvenate. Turn-off the technology and immerse yourself in what is unfolding right before your eyes. • Follow your heart. “No” is a complete sentence. Boundaries are important to creating a life of simplicity. Spend time figuring out what you really want to do. Each time you are pulled into an activity or situation that doesn’t bring you passion or joy, the result is the same--stress, Dissatisfaction, overwhelm and eventually anger. Your heart always resides in a state of simplicity. The more you love your-

• Embrace a childlike state of being. When you are fully immersed in the experience of life, there’s a precious simplicity that’s restored to you. Take your cues from children. They live in a continual state of present moment awareness. When they’re playing, they play full out. When they are eating, they fully love the taste or hate it. When they hurt themselves, they are totally immersed in their pain and tears. And just as quickly they move back into play completely leaving the tears in the past. Engage with life wholeheartedly regardless of what is unfolding; and, access a peaceful serenity that remains with you in the midst of it all. • Release victim mentality. People are trying to get more, have more and be more. And surprisingly this holds true not only for those on the fast track but equally for those trying to forcefully veer off into the slow lane as well. Regardless of your dreams, your desire for something more keeps you continually swimming against the current of life, an exhausting exercise that takes an enormous toll physically, emotionally and spiritually. You are not a victim. Life is happening the way it needs to for you. The simple life is not an outward destination. It is an inner unraveling of layers of complexity allowing the simplicity that has always resided within you to reveal itself. Feature—by Connie “Crash” Humiston From Fragile to Fabulous: A Crash Course in Simplified Living The world changes when we change. The world softens when we soften. — Marianne Williamson

I

n early 2008 I wrote “FRAGILE” on a sticky note to describe my mental state. I had been charging my credit cards for toilet paper, food and anything I could since 2006. In addition to money woes, there were assorted daily dramas that contributed to my despair. Only those who’ve been there know how disempowering it is to live at the bottom of Pavlov’s Hierarchy of Needs (survival). Unemployment is an assault to self-esteem for any long-term job hunter; thus, these two years were worse than my 2002 breast cancer. But at least I had credit cards to use. Yet, on a deeper level, I was happier than ever, as I’d learned it wasn’t ‘THEM’ keeping me from prosperity — it was the way I was flowing my energy, holding onto ‘my little story.’ So I’m relating my new story of how I evolved from FRAGILE to Fabulous. Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting There are two books on the "Crash Required Reading List," to be read in order (especially for beginners): Excuse Me, Your LIFE Is Waiting … the astonishing power of feelings by Lynn Grabhorn, and Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth. Excuse Me changed my and so many of my friends’ lives, often dramatically and particularly financially. Within a week, an audiologist friend filled his second treatment room for the first time. Recently, a contractor friend read 30 pages and reflected, “What is my relationship with money?” He’s now overwhelmed, but with work rather than desperation. Excuse Me is awesome in the essential learning of the Law of Attraction — the age-old law of physics that everything is energy. We, not ‘THEY,’ are the creators of our life experience. The vibrations we send out, we get back. While some ‘Spiritual Law’ books tell us ‘what’ to do, Ms. Grabhorn humorously guides us in how to change our ingrained thoughts and, most importantly, the feelings behind them. She adapted the work of Esther and Jerry Hicks (www.abrahamhicks.com) that nothing is more important than feeling good: high vibes. Grabhorn provides practical, fun ways to bypass the excuses as to why we can't be happy now (debt, health, relationships … our waiting-to-start-living syndrome). She left out one important Hicks tenet. It was hard (and unrealistic) to go from despair to joy. How liberating to learn I didn’t have to think pure, positive thoughts — I could just move up the ladder of the Emotional Guidance Scale (Google it).

A New Earth Awaits By 2008, I’d integrated the Law, expressed gratitude and set intentions daily — and I felt better. But I was still charging toilet paper and my mind was wearing me out, as were the people in my life. I didn’t have hours to sit on a mat learning to still my thoughts. Enter Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth in which Tolle explains that one conscious breath in and out was a meditation — well, hell, I could breathe, so I could do this!! I loved A New Earth so much that I digested it 14 times. With bursts of wry humor, Tolle provides tools to diminish the ego, to return to our Divine state — before the influences of family, teachers, well-meaning friends, society, trying to fit in, to please, self-imposed ‘shoulds.’ I learned to be aware of these voices in my head and the roles we play. Through Myers-Briggs personality profiling, I’d known that you can’t change others. But what hit home in A New Earth was learning I could change my reaction to them — and that I’d taught people how to treat me. I stopped reacting, defending, justifying, blaming, complaining, playing into drama. Others began treating me differently — it was huge for my dad (a big voice in my head) to finally treat me as an adult. Through Tolle’s tools, I recognized ‘my little story.’ I worked on resistance, judgment and attachment. I tapped (EFT/ Emotional Freedom Technique) to many of the passages. Pretty easily, I learned to live in the Present, find the space between thoughts, to observe. I’d found it wasn’t sleep I was lacking, but a vacation from incessant thoughts. From Lil Ol’ Me to Powerful Me — Vibrational and Sound Healing By 2010, I’d climbed some rungs of the Emotional Guidance Scale and Maslow’s Hierarchy. Through my chiropractor/ nutritionist, Dr. Jackie Devaney, I’d gotten healthy from the inside out. I’d practiced self-care, set boundaries and worked diligently on self-talk (not saying anything to my Self that I wouldn’t want said to my daughter) and removing words and excuses from my vocabulary: should, I have to, yeah but, if only, I don’t know, I don’t know how, I don’t have time, etc. I’d quit defining what my life should look like, released control for the most part and allowed the Universe to lead. Yet, there was still a missing piece. I was peaceful, but didn’t feel powerFULL (Lil Ol’ Me was still seeking answers from others). I was still overwhelmed and lacking clarity. Until I met the Shortcut to Divinity: Panache Desai. At his February 2010 group session in Kansas City, he said, “You’ll take a piece of me with you.”

Excuse Me, Your LIFE Is Waiting … the astonishing power of feelings by Lynn Grabhorn Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth Vibrational Healing Nutrition, Self-Talk, Gratitude, Prayer, Nature, Exercise Self-Care (don your oxygen mask first!) Myers-Briggs personality preferences for understanding self and others: www.keirsey.com www.ThinkSimpleNow.com — Louise Hay and Oprah authors Oprah’s OWN channel (can access online if you don’t have cable) — the very best thing to happen to TV.

“Yeah right,” I thought. “Who is this guy with a chocolate-sounding name? But, hmmmmm, why is his energy so powerful that one touch to the forehead and I fall to the ground?” The next day, I laid down with his Awakening CD and “buzzzzzz” — although I’d been participating in Reiki Shares for two years, I’d never felt energy, and here were loving currents buzzing through my fingers, toes, cells — Panache had opened a portal! So I made Awakening my lunch hour for most of eight months, conking out after one track (still happens!). How effortless is that to lie down with a CD, still my thoughts and heal fear, sadness, anger, resentment?! On 10-10-10 I attended his Global Gathering in Orlando. One of our spontaneous chants was “I’m so happy my life no longer sucks.” This was not a seminar high that wears off when one goes back to real life. The next February found me unexpectedly planning my dad’s funeral in the midst of Evolving deadlines, with a stress level of two, while the previous February’s deadlines were an overwhelment of 10. But how did it work? Panache explained that he is only a vessel, a vibrational catalyst — that we all are our own Spiritual Teachers, perfect the way we are. He merely serves as our ‘training wheels’ in reclaiming our power and in embracing our humanness and emotions, such as anger and sadness. His Webcasts are available on www.PanacheDesai.com (you can form a group to meet weekly, sharing expenses while viewing current and archived Webcasts). Yet, my inquiring mind still wanted to know more. I found that our bodies are 75 percent water, so our ‘stuff’ is retained in our cells; and also that our new positive affirmations are of the same mind that created many of the problems in the first place. Thus, experiential vibrational healing is essential for spiritual and physical health, whereas reading and seminars can only get us so far.

‘How’ it works is explained wonderfully in Jonathan Goldman’s The 7 Secrets of Sound Healing and in Kansas City’s own Janalea Hoffman’s Rhythmic Medicine, Music with a Purpose. Besides Janalea, local friends who are vibrational healers include Ricky Yutuc and Rama Inacio, in addition to other marvelous Evolving advertisers, such as Daniel Baxley and Diane Davis Reed in the shamanistic realm. Surrendering to a Wonderful Life Besides discovering vibrational healing, 2010 was my most meaningful year due to my surrender to Grace when I became a Oneness Blessing Giver. (Prior to this, I didn’t even say “bless you” when people sneezed because I was so turned off by organized religion.) The Oneness Blessing changes the neurobiological structure of the brain. Now, there is hardly anything that is a challenge and, if so, not for long. Real life is relatively easy as the Observer, not caught up in drama and muck. It is my hope that these tools will bring you guidance in not going through life like Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life, but in living each day with WOW — frontwards and back. That they will empower you to lovingly take off those training wheels and realize you are your own Spiritual Teacher, perfect the way you are — and that your life no longer sucks! Feature—by Bhasweti Gewhas How to Live with Difficult People

H

ow do you handle those situations in your life where you have to deal with difficult people? Family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and guests -- some of them may often be rude, negative and combative. How do you handle those situations when someone becomes abrasive, critical and says something intentionally hurtful to you? Like many difficult situations in life, you can definitely learn how to cope with negative people in life, with ease, grace and peace. If you look around, you will find people who are great sources of encouragement; they create positive influences and bring joy to your heart. I call them Energy Boosters. You will also find some people who are very judgmental, full of negative emotions and make you feel sad or tensed. I call these people our Energy Suckers. Both of these types of people live within your family; you may work with them every day or meet them occasionally in your church or in get-togethers. They are always around in your life. Among these people, the Energy Suckers are the difficult people to deal with. Usually when you face a situation of abrasiveness or rudeness you feel threatened by the Energy Suckers and try to protect yourself by becoming defensive. But that does not bring peace and most of the time causes severe tension. What is the best way to deal with difficult people? What can you do to improve your self-control and poise in order to change your response? Stop Hurting Self and Release Grudge: When you feel people are attacking you, being brutal and critical, it is usually not about you; actually they are reflecting their own negativity in their outbursts. They are showing their own limitations and lack as they are speaking up to let their negative emotional charges release. It is not wise to take it as your personal offense. When you detach yourself from that malice, you stop hurting self, knowing that it is only their negative outlook. As you stop immediate respondings to negativity, the negative energy stops before it enters your space--so you have less tension and anger. If you focus on taking deep breaths, and bring your mind back to your heart (deciding not to respond before you cool off) you become the observer. Now, being centered, you can release your grudge and bring calmness. Change Your Outlook and Your Responses: As you feel threatened, your ego reacts with fighting attitudes and your responses bring more conflicts. Remember, negativity brings more negativity and conflict creates more conflicts; very soon two egos engage in impulsive combats and generate huge negative emotional spirals. It may cause severe stress and anger for everybody involved. The ego can go on and on for endless cycles of meaningless attempts of denial or self-defense. But the truth cannot be established in the process. If you

it takes lots of practice to change your ego-led behavior permanently. So at the beginning, you may be caught off guard; but, do not be disheartened. Take a couple of deep breaths and connect with your heart center to listen carefully to what your soul is telling you. Follow your heart to find the peaceful way to regain your stand. Remember that practice makes perfect. If you decide that you will not give way to hurtful conflicts and will resolve the issue in peaceful firmness, then respect your choice and follow your heart. You still may make some mistakes and sometimes go back to your ego self, but over time with your inner guidance, you will eventually find the way to keep your ego in check and develop your emotional intelligence. It will improve your mental as well as physical health in many ways. think your peace and contentment are more important than the conflict, then it is always better to speak your truth very firmly and politely. But do not over- react and do not bring more conflict in the process. If necessary, speak your truth again as needed, but do not feel the need to explain it. Everybody has the right to have different outlooks, but that does not make your opinion false. There is absolutely no need to bring about a conflict. Stop Attracting More Negativity: As you change your attitude toward negativity, you may look deeper into the situation and see if you need to learn something meaningful. Go deeper into your heart and ask silently: what lesson do I need to learn now? Look at your inner responses. Your inner responses always bring you a possibility of growth. Whenever your focus is on a positive attitude, you attract more of the similar kinds of uplifting energy. As you are bringing your focus to a better outlook rather than a conflict, you are attracting positive energy. It is a great learning for your ego to stop being tense and to resolve the issue at a higher level of awareness. This approach will also teach you something deeper; it will help you regain your control. It will make you understand that you may not be able to change the other person’s view, but it is giving you a better option of knowing how to respond with positivity. It is also important to know that you have the ultimate control over your own response and you do not have to be influenced by the other’s opinion or abrasive attitude. As you overcome an impulsive reaction of your ego and choose a better response, you become empowered. By getting into a peaceful mode, you stop holding onto a grudge and do not lose your peace of mind and clarity. So the unhappiness stops at that very moment; it does not bleed over to other areas of your life. Keep Your Stress Level Under Check: As you decide to respond to aggressive attacks with calmness and poise or no response at all , you become more balanced within. The stress level remains low and under control. It ensures better health and happiness. It may also give you the feeling of empowerment and confidence. But remember,

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

Forgiveness and Prayer: When someone is offensive, then forgiveness can bring calmness to you. As you know, you may not have the power to change other people’s negative behavior but you can definitely give them a better chance to heal as you forgive them. When you see their negativity as their own limited attitude rather than a personal attack on you, you gain power to forgive them. If you feel the responsibility in some way, take a couple of deep breaths, connect with your heart center and let go of the resentment and irritation. Release the offensive person with forgiveness and feel the relief. Then do the same for your own self. See, you are releasing self from all kinds of stress, tension and negativity—you are allowing forgiveness to embrace you. If you believe in a higher power, like God, Angels or Christ, you may ask for guidance and blessings to resolve the issue in peace. It may be a short form of meditation that will bring calmness to your heart and make you feel truly relaxed. Meditation helps to calm down your irritated ego and bring you closer to your soul. Practicing meditation regularly is a very powerful tool to bring emotional balance and help you to deal with difficult people in a more peaceful way. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Saturn is changing signs and it’s time to clear out old resentments – especially ones that are causing trouble in relationships. Meditate and journal about disappointments from the past 30 years. As you dredge stuff up and let it go, you’ll be more available for love! Try to be active after this internal work to release pent up energy – run, play sports, do a vigorous yoga class. Don’t let your subconscious memories and beliefs get in the way of joy!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Take an honest look at food choices and self-care. If you’ve been eating junky, not getting enough sleep, and forgetting stress reduction (yoga, breathing, meditation), it will catch up with you now. Find supportive friends who encourage you to stick with healthy habits and don’t sabotage you. Reflect on the past two years, and release old anger. “Acting out” on yourself is a way of expressing frustration. Better to journal, meditate and face the pain. You’ll be able to forgive, move on and act in your highest interests. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) As Saturn changes signs, it will impact your career. The next 2 ½ years will be a professional high point! Don’t struggle if certain doors close – see it as a blessing that you’re being cut off from lesser paths. Release those situations, and be open for the doors that lead to “more”! Relationships will flourish this month, and allow the intensity of intimacy to deepen between you and others. Meditate to let go of your intellect and permit your heart to take you out of your comfort zone!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) It’s time to become more disciplined in your spiritual life. You think about spirituality, but how often do you actually practice meditation and other consciousness raising techniques? In past lives, you might have been persecuted for being too “out there”. Your intuition and soul connection could have frightened others and maybe bad things happened back then. It’s time to meditate and forgive the past – even in this life when people thought you’re weird. Commit to inner work for at least ten minutes a day! Aries (March 21 – April 19) As an Aries, it’s tempting to live on the surface so you can bolt if you get bored, or see something new and more interesting. But Saturn is pressuring you to become more committed and devoted. You need to explore trust and intimacy. That could be emotionally, spiritually, or even financially (as in business dealings, or money issues with a spouse). Explore new things, but examine your motives to make sure it’s not an escape from the present that is challenging you to be more profound. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Relationships need to be healed. Please meditate to release old resentments and disappointments in all past and present relationships. Blocks to love will lift and you’ll feel more connected within yourself and to a current partner. Or you’ll meet a new person who is dedicated to being “real” and truly wants love. If an old partnership can’t evolve, it could end. Trust the Universe wants you to be fulfilled, and someone else is out there who matches your desires for intimacy. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) It’s important to understand how much your thoughts affect health. Constant thinking is a stress on your body. Your spiritual step is to take “mind breaks” throughout the day. Just a few deep breaths while saying a short mantra will do wonders. Try, “I am peaceful”, or “the mind is still”. This engages your mind, but in a relaxed way. You’ll have much less anxiety and worry. You’ll also have less digestive problems and food cravings. Your intuition will increase and you’ll feel safe and protected by the Universe! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Feeling abandoned in your relationship, or feeling lonely in general? Please make time to meditate each day. Also, pay attention to your dreams. You’re making a spiritual leap and no amount

of outside affirmation or attention will fulfill you until you’re connecting with your soul. Trying to bond with your higher self (even if you feel nothing is happening), will help you feel connected again to loved ones. You’ll feel centered and poised -- not needy! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Saturn is changing signs and will help you heal childhood and long-term issues. Meditate about what was going on 30 years ago. Ponder how those events contributed to low self-esteem, especially in regards to career. Try to forgive people and circumstances from that time. This also helps relationships take on a new glow because your heart will be open in a deeper way. As you heal your wounded inner child, unconscious blocks to love and prosperity will be removed! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Tackle negative self-talk! As Saturn changes signs this month, you’re confronting your inner critic. Say “NO!” to limiting voices. Use positive affirmations for a healthy “brain washing”! Get out of your comfort zone and do something fearful voices have held you back from. You could be starting a new relationship, or re-energizing a current one, so meditate on how beautiful and wonderful you are. You need to see what the world sees!
