Dear Friend,

Find a need and fill it. That's been my personal motto in all the endeavors I've started. Usually, the need I found was a reflection of my own. In the instance of Evolving Magazine, I needed to explore differing modalities for self-exploration and expression. Now, I'm taking on a new adventure to fill even more reflected needs: a place for community, sharing, gathering and celebrating all that we are. For years I've had a developing vision of a welcoming place for like minds to gather and learn from each other. As the Universe always provides, the ideal space became available with perfect timing. In November, the Evolving Magazine Conscious Living Center opens in a beautiful stone home in Shawnee, KS. Plans include various workshops and events, plus a community garden and organic farmer's market next year. I hope you'll join us November 13 from 5-8 p.m. at 6115 Nieman, Shawnee, KS, for an open house and potluck dinner to learn about upcoming workshops and meet others interested in conscious living. See you there!

News HEALING AND HEALTH — IS THIS A DREAM IN OUR DAY AND AGE? Illness — a word that is widely used today. But why? After all, health is a completely natural condition. More and more people search for a solution from holistic medicine. On this quest, many people rediscover a completely natural path. The ancient civilizations of humanity spoke of the existence of a higher power that can help and heal. Bruno Groening (1906¨C1959) called this power “Heilstrom” or healing force. Among other things, he taught how one can absorb this natural healing power. Many people have received their health back in this way, including people affected by ailments considered incura-

Farm Sanctuary shelters in Watkins Glen, New York; Orland, California; and Los Angeles provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals. These animals stand as ambassadors for the billions on factory farms who have no voice; and, their stories help raise awareness about the brutal realities of factory farming.

Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. No Pain Is Gain The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their state of mind. —William James William James made this statement long before physics, neurobiology and other scientific approaches had proven that we are able to change our mindbody states. We are now harnessing the power of the mind-body for healing in ways never before imagined. Dr. John Leonard has developed a program to help reduce pain, stress, negative emotions and release traumatic memories, while boosting the joy and enthusiasm for life. The NeuroBehavioral Program is a holistic mind-body treatment which gives new hope to pain sufferers. The program has been shown to effectively reduce pain in 90 percentage of chronic pain cases. As you might imagine, when pain is more manageable, the depression and stress that accompany it are reduced as well. Reducing stress can also reduce pain by nearly forty percent. The connection is clear. The NeuroBehavioral Program is based on recent theories in mind-body medicine. Candace Pert in Molecules of Emotion tells us that our biochemical messengers communicate information, intelligently integrating the amazing complex of the conscious and unconscious activities at any one moment. This information transfer takes place by linking the networks of all of our systems. This bodywide information is dynamic and flexible, directing information simultaneously while intelligently guiding life. Ernest Rossi in The Psychobiology of Mind-Body Healing talks about the process of information transduction. Imagine for a moment that you take a nice ripe lemon and prepare to cut off a piece of it. You slice the knife through the juicy lemon. You pick up the piece of lemon and bring it to your mouth. What do you taste? Perhaps your mouth watered or you puckered your lips, even tasted the sour flavor of the lemon. Your mind-body acts as if the lemon was there and you actually tasted it. This demonstrates how the powerful process of words, images and thoughts can produce a physical, multisensory result. This is an example of information transfer. Dr. Leonard has developed a simple, powerful protocol that combines EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

biofeedback, words and images to help people manage pain. In group or individual sessions with a certified neurobehavioral program practitioner, you can learn to turn off pain by using a simple command. You will also learn to reduce stress, anger, sadness, worry and eliminate traumatic memories. By practicing between sessions, you will build the neuronal networks that will eventually bring you nearly automatic relief. As I studied this approach with Dr. Leonard, I was quite skeptical. There are many tools, medicines and procedures to help deal with pain. Some have limited results. Having taught this system for nearly six years and using it myself, I appreciate the simplicity and efficacy of this program. After learning and practicing the protocol, I found that I could just say, “I want my pain to go to zero” and my head, neck, hip or back pain would subside or disappear completely. Adding this to my repertoire of pain reducing approaches has helped me, and many others, to control and manage pain. In working with pain reduction, I, along with others, have discovered that very frequently chronic pain has an underlying component of unresolved emotional pain. Dr. John Sarno, MD, a professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU and the author of many books including Healing Back Pain, writes and teaches about holistic mind-body treatment of the physical and emotional pain. His books are a must read for those with chronic pain. Tapping our own inner resources, together with skilled professionals and loving support, will keep us on the path of healing our mind-body pain. Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes A Yogi’s Take on Simplified Living

A

fter teaching yoga on Fridays, often someone asks me, “So, what are you doing this weekend?” “I will practice not-doing,” I say. I sense their curiosity. Sometimes it evolves to more conversation. “Like how?” On the Myers Briggs test I am smack in the middle of extrovert/ introvert. With my busy days running The Yoga School, I make sure to find days and windows to become very quiet. How I practice not-doing: • • •

• •

I avoid the computer or laptop 24 to 48 hours. I avoid Facebook. Avoid looking at the clock on the weekends and live on internal time. Screen all calls and speak only when I want to take the call. Let it go to voice mail. Plan and shop ahead for good food for the weekend and create something wonderful and nourishing for both body and soul. Do not get in the car for one full day. Get outside in nature and spend time in the park or woods.

• • •

Read a great book, watch a fabulous movie, and listen to music. Spend longer hours in meditation and restorative yoga. And my favorite……sleep more!

This is an ideal weekend of course. Some weekends I work or travel or spend time with family. That is equally as enriching. Yet, if I become too busy, I’ll find a way to become quiet. It heals my soul. It makes me a happier person. Do we not all thrive on balance? Suzette Scholtes has won awards for her writing and community service including one from Writers Digest for non-fiction. Teaching yoga and writing are her passions. At The Yoga School, she shares the 8,000 year old yoga tradition of practicing health and happiness, whether 18 or 80. Here, be met with a smile and learn to love your life. Holistic Health—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Be Ready: Keep it Simple!

eing prepared and proactive can make a huge difference in health and well-being. September was national preparedness month for disasters and emergencies. To prepare, plan and stay informed by setting up and implementing an emergency supply list and being READY for disasters and emergencies, go to www.ready.gov. This website explains how much water and non-perishable food, and other necessities like flashlights, whistles, dust mask, local maps, cash, and emergency reference material to have on hand. It is also a good idea to be prepared with natural remedies in your medicine cabinet by proactively being ready for illnesses and minor injuries. There are many items to choose from, so this is a short, but important list to consider for you and your family. For injuries, burns and bites I recommend several treatments. For injuries, especially bruising injuries, in addition to ice and elevation, topical homeopathic cream and tablets of Traumeel will lessen the inflammation, help the bruising go away faster and decrease pain. For burns, it they are closed and with minor blisters, I recommend cold running water, then ice and apply either calendula cream or lavender essential oil. For minor bug bites or poison ivy, tea tree essential oil or lavender essential oil can be beneficial. In preparation for winter, Vitamin C in the form of Ester C or Buffered C can be used regularly at 500 to 1,000 mg per day and doubled if you get sick. Checking your vitamin D level prior to winter and its cloudy skies is important: a mid range level of about 50 to 70 mg/ml can decrease your risk of colds and flu. You can safely take 2,000 IU’s of vitamin D as an adult without kidney problems and some people require 5,000 IU’s or more. Vitamin D can be toxic to the kidneys as it is a fat soluble vitamin; therefore, blood levels should be checked at least once a year if you take higher doses.

life is advantageous to not only preventing colds and flu, but also preventing or reducing the effects of chronic diseases. As a holistic physician, I like to discuss the four essential elements for well-being: Your body, mind, emotions and spirit. You can start by reviewing these areas and see where improvements can be made in your life. Body health relies on the fuel you intake and the activity level you maintain on a regular basis. Mental health is determined by life-long learning, mental exercises and setting and meeting career goals. Emotional health relates to home environment, friend and family relationships, and if there is happiness, joy and hope in your life. Spiritual health is based on your attitude towards life and self as well as your connection to your life’s purpose and your relationship with God and Christ or other belief and philosophy. As a holistic physician, I am happy to assist you on your life journey, one on one, and use natural remedies as much as possible. Drugs and surgery are sometimes necessary, yet my goal is to avoid them and provide alternatives when possible. Then if you do become ill, there are actions you can take. For colds or sinus infections, there are several steps you can follow. In addition to keeping up a good water intake and minimizing sugar and dairy products, a sinus rinse with a Neti pot or Nasopure system can flush out mucous and allergens. The homeopathic nasal spray, Sinusin, can loosen mucous; and, homeopathic lozenges such as Relievol or Zinc can improve symptoms and offer relief. Herbal remedies can also help with infection such as Echinacea and goldenseal or Oil of oreganol or Olive Leaf extract. Also, get plenty of rest and down time to get well faster. Please check with your medical provider before taking herbal remedies if you are on prescription medications or have chronic health problems. As a goal for optimal health, balance in your overall

Revelations—by Nancy J. Jenkins Living the Life You Deserve

Y

ou deserve a wonderful life. Is that your experience or do you even believe it’s possible? You deserve to live, to breath in life each moment and live in glorious 3D color. After all, you are a human being, not a human doing. A wise person told me I had value just sitting and breathing. Imagine that! She said I was more than a job title and more than all my “doings.” She said I deserved to love and accept myself. Hmmm...that was not my experience. On the outside, my life looked happy. I had a nice home, education, a career, my health, the love of family and friends. But on the inside, there was a tape buried deep inside my brain that said, “You don’t deserve to be happy.” (Note: It took me 44 years to determine that tape existed). I immediately began therapy! I mean, why was this stupid tape in my head and how could I get rid of it? So began the work to purge this negative belief. And work it was, but the journey to build a life I truly believe I deserve — has been worth the effort.

KC MasterMind

A mastermind group consists of two or more minds working together to form a third, invisible force, or master-mind. By working on goal setting and problem solving with a group, solutions the one mind were unable to master are available. It’s a way to help others as well as stimulate your own growth through an association with like minds.

My experience: a few tools for creating a life deserved. I can’t tell you how to solve your problems or achieve a state of happiness. But I can share my experience, the tools I use to deal with life, and what works for me. If you seek to make life changes, you might consider Talk therapy and body work/breath work. Talk therapy can’t do everything, but it’s a great start. If you are stuck in a rut or have identified a negative tape in your head, consider finding a good therapist. Ask for referrals and make sure you do a “chemistry” check. A therapist can provide objective feedback and help dig out any “tapes” that are diminishing the quality of your life. I began work with a therapist in the summer of 2004. She explained that as human beings, until we reach the age of five or six years old, we can’t evaluate the messages our brains and bodies receive. As infants and children, our minds and bodies are basically the equivalent of sponges. We absorb and soak up everything around us — good, bad or in between. All of our parent’s, sibling’s and family’s beliefs, as well as society’s messages and rules, are imprinted on our subconscious minds. And we typically don’t know the content or meaning of those hidden tapes. But we adapt within our family (family of origin) as best we can. A good therapist can help you uncover any hidden tapes that are affecting your life, re-evaluate them, toss or reframe them, and recover your true self.

Letting go of Ego; accessing your inner healer. Maybe you are thinking, as I did, that to achieve my goals all I need to do is work more, think smarter, or apply more discipline. Those strategies can be helpful sometimes, in certain situations. But consider that your body has a mind of its own. Yes, your body has a powerful mind of its own! Just as messages and tapes are imprinted on our minds as infants and children, our bodies are also imprinted by the experiences and feelings during those same years (and in years after). Our body has a memory of everything that has ever happened to us, even if we don’t remember. For example, say we’ve had a traumatic experience and are working with a therapist. We’re feeling better, but not entirely. Talk therapy is great, but it can’t help you move the experience, feelings and memories OUT of your body. Some of the ways to release embedded memory from the body include: yoga, massage, cranial sacral balancing, emotional breath release (EBR), tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique), breath work, and resonance repatterning, just to name a few. Personally, I have found breath work an effective means to process change, get in touch with what’s truly important in my life, and move energy through my body. Breath what? Breath work involves deep cyclical breathing, with music, for an hour or so. This is followed by artwork (creating a mandala) and processing with another person or a group. For me, the practice puts me into a “waking dream state” that lets my body do its own healing. It provides a rare opportunity to let go of Ego and let my soul soar. I love it. You deserve the life you want; and, the good news is it’s there for the taking. If you are willing to ask for it, grab the tools that work for you—and do the work. Nancy Jenkins is the principal of Jenkins Integrated Marketing, a breath work facilitator, an ordained minister and student of self. Kansas City is home to a large breath work community, with a dozen or more certified facilitators. Food First!—by Bethany Klug, D.O. Eating Well on the Road

I

t takes a lot of effort to live healthy in this country. Health isn’t the default option. For example, I visit two farmers markets, subscribe to a weekly delivery of local organic produce and shop at two health food stores each week. There is not (much) local, organic, natural and earth-friendly in my neighborhood. Health isn’t the default option. It’s even more difficult to live healthy while traveling. I travel to places where it’s easy to be healthy when I have the choice. But I don’t want to limit myself to those few places. So here’s how I maintain some semblance of health while on the road. It’s essential to have access to a refrigerator and hot water. Most hotels will provide a refrigerator when asked, and have microwaves in the room or on the floor for heating water. They will provide table service when asked, too. I always bring my own breakfast. I pack my favorite tea and individual servings of chia seed porridge in sandwich bags, and add hot water for an instant breakfast. Natural Grocer’s sells single serving packets of coconut and almond butters which I keep handy in my pantry for trips. I add one-half packet of coconut butter to each serving of porridge for healthy fat. Before leaving, I locate nearby health food grocers, juice bars and restaurants. While in Dallas this spring, I took a cab to vegan restaurant and ordered enough food to cover lunch and dinner for my three day stay. Last month, my husband and I stocked up at a health food store before our three hour drive to Glacier National Park last month. Get the importance of the refrigerator? I often bring jars of spreads, olives and crackers. I keep a variety of pestos and dried olives from livingtreecommunity.com in my pantry. The almond butter packets mentioned above make an easy spread. If I’m lucky to find a health food grocer, I buy organic vegetables that need little preparation. Radicchio leaves make easy cups to fill with pesto, avocado slices, cherry tomatoes, and pieces of green beans or asparagus. I’ll eat corn on the cob raw — it’s really good. I’ll spread celery with almond butter or munch on raw carrots. Hummus is an easy to find alternative to pesto.

If I can’t find organic then I refer to Environmental Working Groups Clean 15 list. Find the wallet guide at www.ewg.org. I make my own raw trail mix or buy the ingredients for it at a health food grocer. Raw pistachios, macadamia nuts and almonds with goji berries, cherries and a bit of raw cacao nibs is my favorite. Enjoy my chia seed porridge recipe: 2 TBSP chia seeds 1 TBSP sesame seeds 2 TBSP walnuts 1 TBSP goji berries 1 TBSP ground golden flax seed 1 TBSP ground hemp seed 1/2 packet coconut butter 1/2 - 1 cup boiled water Place ingredients in a bowl. Add hot water to cover and allow to stand for at least 10 minutes. Add additional hot water to preferred consistency.

For the Chipotle Chicken, Tomatillo and White Cheddar Flatbread Ingredients: 84 grams pulled roasted chicken 4 grams chipotle powder 60 grams tomatillo salsa 55 grams shredded white cheddar cheese Garlic olive oil Kosher salt Directions: Mix together roasted chicken and chipotle powder. Place pulled dough on work table. Prick the bottom of the dough with a fork. Brush a thin layer of garlic olive oil on dough and a sprinkle of salt. Spread tomatillo salsa evenly on dough. Place pieces of chipotle chicken evenly around dough. Sprinkle cheese evenly on dough. Bake the flatbread (see instructions below). Pull flatbread from oven. Evenly distribute fresh cilantro leaves around flat bread. Brush crust with garlic oil. Cut into eight pieces and serve. To Bake Flatbread Dough: Preheat the oven to 500 or 525 degrees Fahrenheit. The high heat will help make a crunchier and more flavorful crust. Let the oven heat for at least a half an hour before baking your flatbreads. If you have a baking stone, preheat it in the oven. Using a pizza peel or the backside of a baking sheet, slide your flabread (with a piece of parchment or lightly sprinkle the baking sheet with cornmeal) onto the baking stone. If you don’t have a baking stone, bake the flatbread right on the baking sheet. Cook for 5 minutes, then rotate the flatbread. Bake for another 3-5 minutes, until the crust is golden-brown and the cheese looks toasty.

T

here is an old Zen story of a man riding very fast on a horse. As he rides past his friend standing on the side of the road, the friend yells, “Where are you going?” The rider turns toward his friend and yells, “I don’t know, ask the horse!” The speed and intensity of modern society often leaves us feeling like the rider on the back of the horse as we rush from appointment to appointment. We try to balance family life with professional life, while checking off the multitude of things on our “To Do” list. It sometimes feels as if life is controlling us, just like the frenzied, out-ofcontrol galloping horse. However, it is possible to approach life’s demands in a different way. It is possible to intentionally do less, rather than more. This may sound simple; however, it takes tremendous courage because this is completely the opposite from the way most of us were raised. Most of us were raised to be accomplishment-oriented. We are taught that “more is better” and it becomes ingrained in us that more of anything is better– more work, more money, more status and more material possessions. We come to accept that this is the true path to happiness. Conversely, we are taught that to do less is lazy, slothful and unproductive. So, in order to do more, we begin multitasking or trying to do more than one thing at a time. And our lives begin to spin out-of-control just like the out-of-control galloping horse. How can anyone truly be happy living like this? It is like the juggler who is trying to keep five balls in the air all at the same time–it’s impossible. There is another way to approach life but it takes a major shift in our attitudes. There is a movement that has been going on in this country for many years now known as “voluntary simplicity,” or approaching life by actually doing less. This may sound easy, but, in fact, it’s hard and takes tremendous courage. You can intentionally simplify your life by doing less, consuming less, reducing your carbon footprint and prioritizing your life by doing the things that bring real happiness, such as spending more time with family, in nature, or meditating. The Buddha, who lived the life of simple monk, was one of the first to practice voluntary simplicity. British economist, E. F. Schumacher, summarized this practice by saying, "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius–and a lot of courage–to move in the opposite direction."

There is a movement that has been going on in this country for many years now known as “voluntary simplicity,” or approaching life by actually doing less. In Buddhism, we call this intentional slowing down and paying attention to the present moment, “mindfulness.” Zen teacher and author, Mark Lesser, referring how to manage our time and our lives says, “I’m tempted to say: not time management; not productivity management; not energy management; not purpose management. Instead, manage your state of mind. In truth, I believe that all these approaches contain important elements, that all deserve attention. And, in order to reduce habits and patterns that hold us back and increase both our satisfaction and productivity, we must learn to manage our state of mind.” And how do we manage our minds? It is through the practice of meditation that we can begin to see the value of slowing down and understanding that less can actually be more. Mother Teresa said, “Poverty is a kind of richness and the rich are much poorer. Sometimes they are more lonely inside. They are not satisfied. The more you have, the more you are occupied, the less you give. But the less you have, the more free you are.” Practicing Voluntary Simplicity or practicing mindfulness is deciding what is really important in your life and setting priorities. What is more important, making another sale or playing with your children? Working overtime or going for a walk in the woods? Taking on another project or spending more time with your spouse? Prioritizing our lives means that we determine what things are really important and deeply meaningful to us. Let me share with you another Zen story about priorities. This is a true story that happened in the 17th century and involved a devotee of Zen in Japan by the name of Tet-Sugen. He decided to publish the sutras, which at that time were available only in Chinese. The books were to be printed with wood blocks in Japanese in an edition of seven thousand copies–a tremendous undertaking. He began by traveling and collecting donations for this purpose. A few sympathizers

would give him a hundred pieces of gold, but most of the time he received only small coins. He thanked each donor with equal gratitude. After ten years he had enough money to begin his task. It happened that at that time the Uji River overflowed and famine followed. He took the funds he had collected for the books and used them to save others from starvation. Then he began again his work of collecting. Several years afterwards an epidemic spread over the country and again he gave away what he had collected, to help his people. For a third time he started his work, and after twenty years he completed his task. The printing blocks which produced the first edition of the sutras can be seen today in the Obaku monastery in Kyoto. The Japanese tell their children that TetSugen made three sets of sutras, and that the first two invisible sets far surpassed even the last set that was printed. We all need to learn to slow down like TetSugen and prioritize our lives. Really determine what things are truly important to us. Remember we are the masters of our ship–we are not victims. We do have control over our lives, but it is a matter of choice. One of the choices that should be at the top of your list is meditation practice. It is through meditation that we develop the compassion and wisdom to help us make better choices. So I challenge you to practice voluntary simplicity in your life, then spend more time doing those things that are really important to you such as spending time with family and friends, connecting with nature and meditating. Feature—by Stephanie Forcier Simplicity: An Internal Job with External Benefits

S

imple living starts with the choice to let things go and to not sweat the small stuff. How many times do you hear yourself say, “It’s just not that easy;” or “It’s very complicated.”? I invite you to pay attention to the times you have this internal dialogue or actually say the words aloud. What might be happening in your internal world that causes these beliefs? Do you want to own these beliefs? Or, do you have a golden opportunity to choose a simpler path? Let’s think of this journey as finding and following the path of least resistance. When we embark on any clearing process, it is often beneficial to begin the journey with a meditation. I recommend setting aside five minutes to experience this meditation. Begin by closing your eyes and taking several deep cleansing breaths. Next, visualize yourself, your soul, as a house. Within this house, every room represents a piece of your being. Allow the picture to form before you and trust your highest self to guide you. As you survey the environment, what does your "soul house" look like? Identify the rooms and areas with any type of clutter. What does the clutter look like? What does this room represent within yourself and also externally in your life? Now, choose only one place of clutter as a starting point. It can be a room, a corner or even a dresser drawer. Be gentle with yourself. Using your spiritual guidance, imagine yourself clearing this space, easily and efficiently. Watch the clutter dissolve away. Sit in the energy of how this newly cleared space feels for as long as you would like. With a couple of deep cleansing breaths, balance yourself and open your eyes. It may be helpful to spend a moment reflecting or journaling about your experience. The intention of this internal journey is to assist with clearing down to the “roots” of what we experience in our external environment. You have done the internal work first so that you may now appreciate and witness the transformation of your external environment. External transformation will be your gauge. Are you now able to take action? Do you see the change externally? Were you able to literally clear out the fridge or gather a pile of items for donation? Be sure to give yourself credit for small steps; and, if you are not finding yourself or your space becoming simpler to manage, then

The intention of this internal journey is to assist with clearing down to the “roots” of what we experience in our external environment. that is the compass pointing you back to more internal work and meditation. Let us next reflect on some reminders for this process and experiencing the essence of being SIMPLE. SIMPLE S – Surrender to that which is important to you and adds value to your life. This is where you take a moment to determine what is truly valuable in your life. What are your non-negotiables and essentials? Allow yourself to identify the core of what you need to simply survive, both emotionally and physically. Allow yourself to align with these core valuables, both tangible and intangible. I – Imagine releasing the clutter. We shape our reality through our imagination. This is pure creativity and creative force, and something that each of us possess. Even if releasing and clearing seems overwhelming, we can start with imagining the clutter dissolving away. We can then imagine how clear and simple our environments feel. What we focus on becomes our reality. M – Mindfulness is your ally. Be mindful and honest with yourself during this process. If fear and anxiety arise, make space for them. Be mindful of their need to be acknowledged. Don’t worry! They won’t be sticking around; however, part of the process is to spotlight our underlying fears and hesitations, moving them from within us to a place where we can view them from a new perspective. This gets them up and out of our system.

wave or floating downward into the Earth where they will be transformed. You may want to have a ceremony, say a prayer or simply ask those fears to go away and never return. Whatever your approach, remember that you are deserving of more simplicity, more freedom and more love. L – Love is at the core. Focus the love in your heart on yourself. The process of letting go is truly a labor of love. If at any time you become overwhelmed, re-focus your attention to love. Bring in the thoughts, emotions and things that reflect love for you. Allow rejuvenation and give yourself a breath of fresh air. This little dose of love may be what rewires how you feel and supports you in continuing your process. Love is the path of least resistance. E – Embrace a simply radiant external reality. This is the fun part! Now, you get to enjoy the external manifestations of your internal work. Watch the clutter melt away, even if it is a little at a time. As you notice and enjoy your new external environment and the space that has been created, you get to design your new reality. Invite in the simple pleasures, simple beauty and enjoy simply being! P – Process your thoughts and emotions with courage. Make no mistake that this process can require a great deal of courage. With fears and anxieties in the spotlight, you get to determine what will be released and how it will be released. You may want to visualize them burning away in fire, being washed away by a huge

M

y creative flow comes with my art. The connection is simple; when I turn off my crazy mind and all thoughts, I tune in to my book of art journaling--it comes to me spontaneously. In that moment I immediately go into trance; colors, lines and shapes begin to appear. I do not intend to create anything in particular; but, I let my inner mind play like a child. I become the child again – without any intention, without any direction. So many excellent and unexpected things have happened and are still happening in my life when I really allow that creative flow to surface – firstly, I become one with the present moment. As I become fully present in the moment and experience the endless joy of being creative. I feel happy with doing something apparently meaningless (but truly meaningful to me) — I accept it as my own way of meditation. It is also very healing as it clears clutter from the mind. Like a creative process of talking to my inner mind or subconscious, I often ask questions and many times the answers have come from deep within. The answers are very profound and meaningful to my life journey. While doing the process of art journaling, I feel like my masters and angels are talking to me through the creative flow of colors, forms and shapes. It is a very nurturing process of finding my truth within and feeling that I always have the connection to rely on whenever I need help. After moving to Idaho in 2006, I was arranging all the books in my study; I found one of my old art journal books which were my best friends during a difficult divorce in India in 1998. The journal opened to a particular page and I was stunned to see my vision about the future! It was a love picture for my happy family – me, my daughter and my future husband in our front yard. The picture also included a little white dog and a landscaped garden with a small pond. As I looked through our window, that day, I saw our landscaped garden with the little pond, my little white dog, Ibon, playing with my daughter, Johlea, and my loving husband,

this entire experience in my website for others to read and be inspired. Hence I have manifested many of my dreams with my creative process of expression. When I am in my creative space, I let the creative flow of the universe take charge and allow miracles to happen. It is gradually creating my life of dreams, each day I am empowering myself to be the co-creator of my dream life. Every day, my creative spirituality is helping me to become my authentic self. Fearlessly, I am discovering my own creator within. Now I teach others how to connect with creative flow within to co-create their own dream life. I am feeling so grateful — as it is one of my most meaningful dreams I am manifesting now!

As I become fully present in the moment and experience the endless joy of being creative, I feel happy with doing something apparently meaningless (but truly meaningful to me). Sandip, sitting on the porch having tea. Exactly every part of my dream had been manifested! I found my loving husband and my dream house; and, my daughter had found happiness in her new life along with our pet dog that brought us so much pleasure. It took eight long years to manifest everything as in the journal. I realize art journaling can be so empowering! I have posted this picture and mentioned

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels October 2013 Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Happy birthday Libra! Give yourself the gift of forgiveness. Mars will help clear your subconscious of the last two years of resentments, frustrations and “issues”. Dreams and meditation will give hints of what to release. Journal about negative and mean thoughts you have toward yourself!! This is the biggest clearing you can do! Then you’ll be able to feel the love and abundance around you! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Mercury is retrograde in your sign from Oct. 21 until Nov. 9. This is a wonderful spiritual opportunity! Meditation will be amazingly profound. You’ll have insights into subconscious problems. You’ll also intuitively know how to heal relationship issues. It’s also a great time to construct a new budget; and you might also have a little financial windfall! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Exciting work opportunities are coming around! This could be a new job, or a fun project – even a cool new supervisor that makes work pleasant. Relationships will be blossoming, mostly because you’re radiating a divine beauty and harmony that is irresistible! The retrograde Mercury will help your intuition be very strong, and dreams will bring lots of guidance!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) You’ll be re-inspired in your spiritual life. Try a new style of meditation. Read different spiritual books or investigate philosophies. Go to a yoga class. Walk in nature. Try to gather a small group of like-minded friends so you can offer each other encouragement. You might also find it soothing to cook, since you’ll feel the mystical connection that comes from taking the time to care for your body!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Use meditation time to improve your current relationship, or to draw a new one to you. Ponder your ideal relationship and ask your intuition for steps to take to make it manifest. You might start by being more verbal about your spiritual beliefs so you feel more authentic with everyone in your life. Also, in the work sphere, there could be a raise coming, or a new person you really bond with comes into your office!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Mercury is retrograde, bringing possible confusion in your work life. Don’t make decisions until late November, if possible – your mind will be clearer then! But Mercury can also grant spiritual insights that improve your current job, so make sure to meditate and remain openminded (just wait to take action). You’ll also be challenged on issues of trust and intimacy. It’s scary for Aquarians to bond, but take a leap!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) It’s great to start a new eating and exercise routine. Find a style of self-care that resonates with your spiritual path. Your body is a beautiful temple that houses your soul, so treat it with love! Having a deeper meaning behind fitness will keep you motivated and it won’t be a fad you soon loose interest with. It may sound silly, but meditate and forgive your body its shortcomings – injuries, diseases, limitations – and focus on its strengths!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Mercury retrograde can cause confusion and misunderstandings in relationships – but don’t let it! Focus your meditation time on seeing the heart connection between you and your partner, rather than stressing about garbled mental connections! You’ll be able to see the karmic root and heal the cause instead of manage symptoms. This saves you weeks of brooding – and helps open your bond to a deeper level of trust and love! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You can start a new relationship this month. It’s crucial to meditate and be sure you’ve healed childhood hurts and disappointments so you won’t unconsciously bring them into your love life! Even if partnered, it’s a good time to examine your emotions and see what the roots are. It’s likely things are based far in the past and your partner merely reminds you of old stuff! Also, be kind to

your body with good food and rest as you delve into this healing process. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You might be feeling irritated, so be sure you meditate before taking things out on your kids or partner. Even if these people are the source of your emotional discomfort, quiet time will help you get your thoughts in order – and even see if there’s a misunderstanding (Mercury is retrograde!). Your work life will be smoother. Pay attention to intuitive ideas that can create exciting breakthroughs for your entire office! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Mercury is retrograde and can cause confusion and misunderstandings in your home about money . . . which can escalate into arguments or excessive worry. Focus your meditation on the unlimited abundance of the Universe. Once you regain your spiritual and emotional poise, intuitive solutions will come – and unexpected income can also flow in! Don’t make radical decisions this month, but be open to gentle guidance for how to proceed. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Energetic Mars is in your sign for a two month stay! Center meditations on actions you can take to improve your health, self-image and relationships. You’ll find inner guidance comes easily. Adequate courage is there for you too! One caution is not to be overly gung-ho with exercise. Listen to your body’s limits, since you’ll be tempted to over-ride warnings. Also, have a party for family and close friends, since your house has a great “vibe” right now! Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practitioner.
