Active M&A in the Beauty Space Fuels Future Growth 美容業併購活動有助未來增長 The acquisition of Trilogy earlier this year reflected the growing importance of Asia in the global market for natural & organic cosmetics. CITIC Capital China Partners, a Hong Kong-based private equity firm, has paid US $211 million for the New Zealand-based company. Trilogy is the leading natural skincare brand in its home country, and has a significant footprint in Asia and the US.

He believes a major motive for the purchase is expansion in the fast-growing Asian market. Natural & organic cosmetic sales in Asia increased by 21% last year, compared to single digits in Europe and North America. Asia has high growth potential, considering the market share of total cosmetics remains below 1% in almost all country markets.

It was acquired, along with its Japanese distributor, for US$336 million two years ago. Chinese companies have also purchased European brands of natural cosmetics to expand in the Asian market.

Major Challenges Businesses Face Today 企業面臨的主要挑戰 Distribution is a major challenge for natural & organic cosmetic brands in Asia. It does not have the same distribution infrastructure for natural & organic products as Western markets. Thus, many brands are taking the direct route and opening concept stores. Some, such as the Indian organic cosmetics firm Azafran Innovacion are focusing on building distribution networks. It has an aggressive plan to expand its retail outlets from 1,500 to 10,000 this year.

Multinationals are also looking to expand their presence in the Asian market. P&G acquired the New Zealand skincare company, Snowberry, a few months ago. Unilever has purchased a brace of natural personal care brands in the last few years; they include Schmidt’s Naturals, Sundial Brands, REN Skincare, as well as Seventh Generation. It has also made investments in True Botanicals and Gallinée. Sahota expects the multinationals to utilize their distribution networks to introduce some of these brands in Asia.

COSMOS and NaTrue are now established in Europe, however adoption rates in North America and Asia remain low. Sahota finds that certified products represent less than 10% of natural & organic cosmetics in North America.

New ethical labeling schemes are gaining traction. In Europe, vegan and fair trade labels are now established on cosmetics & personal care products. In the US, Burt’s Bees has moved away from the NPA natural standard, opting for the National Eczema Association seal of acceptance for its sensitive skin care line. AllergyCertified launched its Skin Allergy Certified standard in 2013, and now has over 450 certified products. The Made Safe and Environmental Working Group (EWG) Verified Program are also becoming popular. The latter has 1,286 certified personal care products.

As consumers increasingly looking for certified products, it is highly likely that some of these new labeling schemes will gain popularity in Asia. With growing proliferation in standards and labeling schemes, a major decision for brands, is not which ones, but how many to adopt.

What is Silica?

Strong Export Growth 出口強勁

Australia has earned a good reputation as a quality supplier to the beauty and health sectors worldwide and is recognised as a good source for cosmetics, skin care and health products, particularly in the natural and organic skincare categories. Australia’s botanical ingredients and extracts containing antioxidants, vitamins and minerals from native fruits and plants such as kakadu plum, grass lily, quandong and tea tree are becoming increasingly well known.

Over the past five years, the cosmetics, perfume and toiletries manufacturing industry in Australia has posted an impressive performance, driven by strong export growth, In particular, the natural and organic cosmetic. According to IBIS World, exports of cosmetic, perfume and toiletries have trended upwards over the five years through 2017-18, projected to grow at an annualized 12.0%. The industry exports are estimated to be worth A$755.0 million, generating 48.8% of industry revenue.

In Australia, the ingredients used in cosmetics must be registered by the National Industry Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) who has an inventory of ALL chemicals coming into the country. For a cosmetic with curative or therapeutic claims, the product must be listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Manufacturers of cosmetic products must be registered with NICNAS.

Australia’s Complimentary Medicine 澳洲輔助治療 According to Austrade, the sector is strongly export-focused with over 60% of Australian complementary medicine companies involved in exporting. Vitamin and supplement exports are projected to total A$677 million in 2016-17, making up nearly half of total industry revenue. What are Complementary Medicines?

Complementary medicines include supplements (vitamins, minerals and other nutritional products), herbal, homeopathic and aromatherapy medicines, and traditional medicines (traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic, Indigenous and Western herbal medicines). They are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and must be manufactured to the same standards as pharmaceutical products under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and in facilities approved and licensed by TGA. TGA sets and enforces strict safety and quality regulations around ingredients, batch testing, shelf stability and tracking of adverse events.

如何挑選最好的玫瑰果油? Rosehip oil now has become a must-have product in women’s beauty regimes around the globe. However, there are different grades of rosehip oil available on the market. As a buyer, how could you pick the best one in the market? Marie Kapetanakis, Founder of Kosmea Australia, shares the tips with us. 現時,玫瑰果油美容產品於全球大行其道,而玫瑰果油亦有不同的等級, 要在云云同類產品中作採購應該如何挑選呢?我們請來Kosmea創始人 Marie Kapetanakis 跟大家分享一些重點。 The Extraction Process

Whole Fruit or Part of the Fruit?

Rosehip oil is either solvent, cold-pressed or supercritically extracted. Supercritical extraction is known as the superior form of extracting, as no heat enters the product. Despite its name, cold-pressed rosehip oil is often exposed to heat. Rosehip seeds are very hard, almost as hard as a little pebble. If you cold-press rosehip seeds, they generate quite a lot of friction, which generates heat. As we know for vegetable oil or fruit oil, heat is a destroyer of some of the valuable components of antioxidants. When the rosehip is supercritically extracted, carbon dioxide gas is used at high pressure but at low temperature to extract the oil.

When comparing rosehip oil, another difference between brands is that some use oil just from the seed, while others utilise the whole fruit. Using the rosehip skin delivers up to eight times more vitamin A than compared to just using the seed. “We buy the whole rosehips from communities in Southern Africa, we dry them, and then we use the whole fruit. The seed doesn’t give a lot of vitamin A; there is much more vitamin A in the fruit. If you’ve got less vitamin A, you’re not going to get as many anti-ageing benefits. You know if you have a good-quality oil by the vitamin A content – our vitamin A content is 4,000 micrograms per gram,” reveals Maria. By supercritically extracting the oil and using the skin, rosehip oil is also packed with lycopene, betacarotene, and a small amount of vitamin C.

不同品牌的玫瑰果油成份或用料都不盡相 同,有些品牌會使用玫瑰果籽,有些品牌會 使用整個玫瑰果。與玫瑰果籽相比,玫瑰果 皮的維他命A高8倍。Marie 透露:「我們從 非洲南部萊索託購入整個玫瑰果,製乾後, 將整個玫瑰果用作萃取。玫瑰果籽沒有太多 維他命A的,但果肉連同果皮就多很多。若 原材料的維他命A含量太少,產品的抗衰老 功效便大打折扣了!單看產品內的維他命A 含量,你便知道你的玫瑰果油是否優質,我 們的產品每克玫塊果油便含有4000微克維 他命A。」Marie亦提及,以超臨界萃取法 萃取含有果皮的玫瑰果油,可保留豐富的茄 紅素、胡蘿蔔素β和少量的維他命C。

A Refined Life

Many rosehip oils go through a process of being refined, something that Marie warns people to avoid. “If a product has been refined, it goes rancid very quickly. When you refine something, you’re actually adding more heat to it – and heat destroys many of the valuable antioxidants which are keeping the oil from going off.” She adds, “Most rosehip oils are light with a yellow to a clear colour – this means the product has been refined. We don’t refine our oils and you can see the difference in the colour. Kosmea’s Rosehip Oil has a red tinge. You can see the difference, smell the difference, and most importantly, when you put it on the skin, you can feel the difference because it absorbs into the skin and leaves a matte finish.”

While it’s hard as a buyer to know whether a rosehip oil is of a high grade just from looking at the pack, a trick is to find out where the product is sourced.

Polish cosmetics are becoming a worldwide hit. Over the past 15 years, Poland’s cosmetics market has grown by 78% nominally and by 32% in real terms, which translates into 2% growth annually, according to a report by Deloitte.

Poland is the only country in Europe, apart from Lithuania, where cosmetology is taught at university level.

Hence, it has been chosen by the Polish Ministry of Economy as one of 15 flagship branches of industry promoting the Polish economy on international markets.

There are about 19,000 people employed in the Polish cosmetics industry. A long-standing experience in cosmetics production is supported by a developed scientific and educational backdrop. Altogether, cosmetology and cosmetics chemistry is taught on different levels at 54 academic centers, including 9 state universities. There are several dozen colleges and universities offering related fields of study such as: chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology (24 colleges of higher education) and pharmacy (11 colleges of higher education).

Strong Export Growth 出口保持強勢 Japanese beauty products are often associated with high quality, effective, innovative and safe. A lot of “made in Japan” cosmetics brands are sharply increasing the popularity worldwide. Japan’s cosmetics export has grown more than triple over the past decade. According to the data published by the Finance Ministry of Japan, the exports of cosmetics, excluding perfume and hair care products, reached ¥294 billion in 2017, hitting a record high for the fifth straight year.
