The LIFE of an ENTREPRENEUR

Iam an entrepreneur. When saying this, it makes me feel akin to how someone would declare this in recovery programs because, sometimes, I wish I was not an entrepreneur. It can be so uncomfortable and quite scary at times, but the rewards outweigh the risks if you have passion and a burning desire to create something you believe only you can. It’s not for the faint of heart, nor for someone who needs a great deal of security; hence, my headline pays homage to one of Tom Cruise’s first movies. It sets the tone that the life of an entrepreneur can be solitary and requires immense bravery. So, this issue goes out to all the artists selling their wares and the social media content creators, influencers, podcasters, marketers, techies, and even preachers of motivation trying to get us all to believe we can do it while we shoot for the stars.

An entrepreneur is someone who starts or owns a business. Whether in farming, retail, manufacturing, or even the service sector and nonprofits, entrepreneurs are business people who find their success by taking risks. In their pursuits, they often become disruptors in established industries. In my experience, many are also God-fearing people, which is good because sometimes a save from above can make the difference between failure and victory.

Being at the helm of a company that relies on your decisions to succeed might be the biggest stressor of all because your team believes in you, and you don’t want to let them down. As other leaders say within the pages of our first-ever Entrepreneur Issue, building a team that respects you and expects that you have everything figured out is a daunting responsibility. It takes strength, character, and a good sense of humor, so I love that I have been gifted a lot of joy in my life, as it truly sustains me.

This issue is overflowing with stories about many people who have made their marks on the world by doing things their way, and we congratulate all of them. Thank you for letting us share your journeys with our readers. Keep creating, inventing, disrupting, working, and believing in what you are most passionate about. And to those with a vision to bring to life, this is your sign to go for it!

My wife and I are passionate about cooking at home, always coming up with these inventive meals and surprising each other. Oh, fun! I am a girl who loves sweets. I’ve always wanted to have a dessert restaurant—as in, one that only serves desserts. It’d have a diner vibe but just a menu full of desserts. Think big ice cream sundaes and chocolate-covered anything you could imagine, with all the different flavors of ice cream. My personal favorite part is all the toppings!

These are the wise words of Lauryn Bosstick, founder of The Skinny Confidential. She cohosts the widely popular podcast, The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER show, with her husband, Michael Bosstick, CEO and founder of the Dear Media podcast network. The husband-wife duo are individualists and trailblazers known for doing things their way. Whether behind the mic or in a business meeting, you can expect both to state what they believe fearlessly—a respectable trait in a world so overly consumed with being likable and appealing to the masses.

Paving their own lane has yielded massive rewards: The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER show’s devoted audience has downloaded the podcast over 200 million times. The Skinny Confidential brand, which began as a blog run by Lauryn thirteen years ago, has launched instant-sell-out wellness products ranging from the Hot Mess Ice Roller to chic pink mouth tape. Dear Media is a leading network that has produced over one hundred shows, many of which consistently rank in the top charts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. On top of these awe-inspiring feats, they balance being present parents to their two children, Townes and Zaza, while prioritizing their relationship and personal well-being.

Michael and Lauryn Bosstick have been interviewed hundreds of times. Still, we feel this holistic and honest feature offers fresh insights into how they do it all—from building a modern media empire to owning who you are and their favorite hacks for success and optimized living. Like Michael and Lauryn,

we don’t run by a script: we believe in telling stories with heart and soul. Today, we are honored to share theirs.

When Lauryn started The Skinny Confidential blog in 2011, she was never concerned with making money. Instead, she focused on perfecting her craft and stayed patient for her big break. “From the beginning, my intention was to build a brand,” she says. “One of the best business tips is to think big and start small, like an upside-down triangle. When I began The Skinny Confidential, that looked like blogging seven days a week, becoming my own photographer, staying organized, and always engaging with and listening to my community.”

Lauryn is visibly confident and secure in her own skin; her style and eye for on-point aesthetics certainly shape her success in launching game-changing, elevated versions of your favorite wellness products through the TSC brand. “Without The Skinny Confidential, I’d be the same person, although it’s important to note that The Skinny Confidential has given me invaluable skills,” she expresses. “The business and brand have allowed me space to refine and edit my people skills, become more comfortable on camera, and become a strong leader. It’s enhanced my abilities in the best ways.”

Although Lauryn says these traits have been amplified through her work, each traces back to her childhood. “When I was little, I’d make scrapbooks for my friends that matched their personalities. I built cookie stands that were aesthetically pleasing, and in sixth grade, I created a magazine that was the brand of my life at that point. I found it the other day—it was hilarious, like a blog on paper,” she reminisces.

“At the dinner table, my dad likes to tell stories about how I loved being on camera and oversharing from a young age—what you see is what you get, with or without my business. When it comes to confidence, my parents instilled it in me from a young age. They did a nice job of caveating that with the importance of a strong work ethic. Both those skills have enabled me to feel comfortable putting myself out there with an intense awareness of the fact that not everyone is going to like me. When you know that, it makes it much easier to show up as exactly who you are.”

Lauryn shares that many experiences shaped her need for independence— something every true entrepreneur can relate to. “Some examples are getting my first job at age fourteen, my parents making sure that I had to go out and get it if I wanted it (car, material items, college), and losing my mom at a young age. Basically, I quickly realized that no one was going to do it for me. Every day, I still think about that—no one is going to do it for you. Go kill the tiger yourself. Your confidence will soar.”

In 2016, Lauryn and Michael launched the HIM & HER show. It was an opportunity for the couple to create together, says Michael. “A common misconception about us is that we work on everything together,” he explains. “Many don’t realize we operate completely separate businesses with separate teams and manage those teams individually based on our personal management styles.”

The HIM & HER show is a natural complement to The Skinny Confidential blog, allowing readers to listen on the go. “We’re in the audience’s ear while they get their nails done, drive their kids to soccer, fold laundry—they’re saving time because they can do two things at once. The evolution from a blog to a podcast was a totally natural way to grow,” says Lauryn.

One of the most refreshing aspects of the show is how the Bossticks are not afraid to share their unfiltered opinions. “When you try to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one,” Lauryn emphasizes. “By nature, I overshare. I am bold with my opinion. It all feels natural to me. On that note, I also give myself space to change and evolve; people can see that evolution process through the podcast. It’s a waste of energy to be afraid of what people think, and I am not afraid to say it how it is. The audience can smell someone constantly trying to appease everyone; it comes off as inauthentic.”

“We aren’t actors,” Michael adds. “We don’t want to spend a ton of effort or time trying to curate a voice that isn’t ours or reach an audience we know won’t like us as we are. We are fine not being liked by everyone as long as it means we can always be ourselves. We would rather share our voices authentically and be disliked than be mistrusted.”

He continues, “With the success of the show and after joining another media company that we felt didn’t bring enough to the table, we decided to create a media business of our own that would be ‘by talent for talent’ and provide all the capabilities we believe a modern media company should offer to media personalities and talent. So we created Dear Media, and the rest is history,” he explains. “We have been disruptors in our space because we pay very little attention to what legacy media companies of the past have done and try to offer services and content on any medium or channel where our creators reach their audiences. This could look like audio-only shows, audio and video shows, live events, publishing deals, commerce brands, merchandise, fast channel opportunities, and social syndication across all relevant platforms. We are platform agnostic and look to build great content on any relevant channel our audiences care about.”

Another differentiating factor of how the Bossticks operate is their innovative creative process. For Lauryn, it’s chaotic—in her own words. “I’m the type of person who has to think of an idea, sit on it, stew on it, think about it, walk on it, meditate on it, blend it up, cut it up, try it on, and then refine and edit it,” she shares. “This process is annoying to a lot of people. But the process is the best part and my favorite part. Sometimes, I need to get to the other side to see if something isn’t a good fit, but that’s also where the magic happens.”

For example, she says, “Taking a product I use every day or that the community uses every day and trying to make it better with a lot of edits and fluffing is what excites me most. When a consumer opens something from The Skinny Confidential, I want them to think, ‘Wow, this is way better than I thought it would be.’ That’s the goal, from the shipping box to the packaging to the product. Each touch point is thought out.”

Lauryn admits that expanding from a blog to a line of products has been a challenging and educational experience. “The product line has taught me a lot about scaling, which I had no clue about before building a business. The creative process can be romantic, but I realized to become successful, you have to pair the romance and creativity with the business side. Currently, I consume a lot of business-oriented content: podcasts, audiobooks, books, and newsletters. It’s vital to stay curious and never think you know it all. A big mistake entrepreneurs make is that they drink their own Kool-Aid. I always want to step away from the big picture and look at things from a consumer or competitor’s perspective. I guess you could say I’m good at checking myself. I always feel I have a lot to learn.”

She adds, “The wellness space is rewarding because you can make people feel good. People need to understand it’s not selfish to practice self-care, and we want to give people the tools to do quick rituals throughout their day whenever they can. Discovering old-world tips has been a fun part of the process, too. So many wellness practices have been around for hundreds of years. Cold therapy, shaving a woman’s face, facial manipulation—these are all things that have been in front of us for so long, and rediscovering them has made sense for the trajectory of the brand. Old Hollywood books are my favorite, so I love reading about Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Elizabeth Taylor. Between the lines, there are mentions of beauty tips and hacks, and we like to pull that nostalgia into our products but make them fresh for today.”

VIE: Michael, tell us about your vision for Dear Media to be the “Netflix of podcasts.” How do you plan on achieving this goal, and what changes would you like to see within the network over the next few years?

MICHAEL BOSSTICK: My vision for Dear Media has always been to build a modern media presence that would have its arms in more than just podcasts. I don’t even like to call Dear Media a podcast business, as we are so much more than that. We used podcasts as our entry point to prove ourselves in media but have always had the ambition to go far beyond audio. To date, we have produced over one hundred shows that stretch into audio and video. We have curated billions of social and video impressions, both in short-form and long-form content, against all of the biggest social platforms; we have incubated two commerce brands that are now venture-backed, including Lauryn’s business, The Skinny Confidential (product line); we have invested in eight commerce brands, such as Arrae, Deux, Canopy, and more; we have produced multiple live events and our first summit; and we co-published our first book, which landed on The New York Times Best Seller list.

I say all this to point out that our ambition and capabilities stretch far beyond a typical podcast business. It’s why I also don’t participate very often in whatever is going on in the podcast industry. No shade to anyone there; I just think focusing solely on audio is limited in opportunity and personal interest.

Lauryn’s most recently launched product is her take on mouth tape, which arrives in a branded storage box and is complete with her signature pink. If mouth taping is unfamiliar to you, it’s not only a beauty hack but a wellness upgrade. “After reading the books Breathe, Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic and Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life and then talking to Dr. Andrew Huberman on the HIM & HER show, I became so interested,” Lauryn says. “And it’s an easy habit to stick with (no pun intended, haha!) because the results and benefits are insane.”

Mouth taping helps strengthen and sculpt your jaw, improves sleep, and leaves you with more energy upon waking to carry you throughout the day. “Of every product we’ve done, the mouth tape is the most life-changing,” Lauryn expounds. “What it’s done for my face and energy levels after using it every night for ten months is out of this world. And I was a big mouth breather. I was a snorer, which did get better with my double jaw surgery, but still. Now, I’m neither of those things. I’m extremely passionate about recommending this to everyone because it’s enhanced my life beyond what I ever thought a little piece of tape could.”

Despite these major wins, Lauryn reminds us she is still human and encounters daily struggles. “When it comes to business, struggle is just part of the game. I have yet to hear of one business owner who didn’t struggle.”

The intense double corrective jaw surgery is a struggle that stands out to her, Lauryn shares. “I suffered a genuine identity crisis for two years. It was one of the hardest periods of my life to look in the mirror for two years and not recognize who was staring back at me. People were coming at me online and asking what happened to my face when I had just had serious surgery. It added a different layer to my life. Looking back, I’m grateful for the experience because the ice roller was born from that, and my husband became more comfortable in front of the camera (because I turned it on him). I also never lead with looks—I try to be interesting and interested. Engaging and engaged. Looks are lower down the list after that experience.”

She continues, “Another struggle I had was gaining sixty pounds while pregnant with both my kids. It’s another form of an identity crisis to be so out of your body and not feeling like yourself. Through that experience, I discovered the importance of eating tons of protein and weightlifting, which has changed my life. Now I have twenty times more confidence, my clothes feel amazing, my whole body composition has shrunk, the dopamine hit gives me something I can’t shut up

about, and I show up as a better mother. My hope is that other women struggling with their weight see the importance of weightlifting, which is why I talk about it so much.”

Her other daily struggles include staying present, managing her time, growing her team of fourteen, and showing up the way she wants. She says, “There’s a quote I love by Robert Greene on overcoming adversity: ‘Everything that happens to you is a form of instruction if you pay attention.’”

The Bossticks recently gave an entrepreneurship-focused lecture to students at Columbia University. They incorporated this theme of conquering setbacks and doing things your way into the ethos of the talk. “We both loved it, especially given that it is very likely our applications for that school would have been tossed in the trash when we were applying to college!” Michael shares.

Lauryn continues, “I hope they learned there are many ways to skin a cat, and it’s not just one straight line. You don’t just get a degree and you’re good. You need to constantly challenge yourself, learn, read, and absorb information. As an entrepreneur, you have to throw yourself out there, then edit and adjust as you iterate. It’s a massive exercise in not giving a **** what anyone thinks about you, but it’s necessary. If you’re a content creator, you should always make a list of what makes you special and unique and lean into those things. What makes you stand out? Show up and do that every single day online.”

Sharing a tool that has helped her, Lauryn adds, “There’s a book I highly recommend called The 38 Letters From J.D. Rockefeller to His Son, and one of the things he says is ‘Second place is still losing. If you want to be the best at something, you have to show up every day and do it.’ If you want to be the best, you need to have persistence and patience. Patience is a vital part of the equation. Taste is, too, when it comes to an aesthetic, knowing what the consumer wants, or a particular marketing strategy. Stay curious and realize that you don’t know everything. I like to get all the information I can get my hands on.”

The couple’s advice for creating the best work-life balance and dynamic is to get crystal clear on your vision to ensure you’re on the same path. “Michael and I have gotten laser-focused on the vision for our life and how it’s laid out. Sometimes, couples can get disjointed from that vision. We are committed to exactly what we want out of life and building it together. We map out how we want the next two months to look, the next year, and what life looks like when we’re older,” Lauryn says. “We have a mutual respect for each other’s strengths. I know when he is the better person to ask for something, he knows when I’m the better person for something,

VIE: Lauryn, we know you both do lots of interviews, but is there something you never get asked about that you wish you could highlight?

LAURYN BOSSTICK: Sometimes I get asked how I “do it all,” and I always want to be very transparent. I love being asked this question because I want everyone to know that I have a lot of help. I have a nanny and a house manager. I have help cleaning our house, assistants, and an entire team. That’s really important for me to let other women know I am not an octopus. On that note, I have balanced a business all on my own, which I’m proud of, but throw kids, a husband, and dogs into the equation, and it’s OK to need, ask for, and accept help.

I’m also very methodical about the calendar. When my daughter is at school, I will pack the calendar so that when she’s home, I can show up, be present, and be there for her 100 percent. We do crafts, bake cookies, and do things together that make memories. I don’t get it right every day. There are many nights where I lay my head down and think I could’ve done better, but for the most part, this works.

Meditation helps me have inner harmony. It’s been powerful and allows me to be stoic and not lose my sh*t.

Another thing: I pay for my time, too. That means getting hair and makeup done so I can be on phone calls and working, taking Ubers so I can think or post on social, and taking walks during conference calls. Getting creative with your time can free some up and help you stay more present for other things.

“MY ADVICE IS TO SET A MAP OF WHERE YOU WANT TO BE IN SIX MONTHS AS A COUPLE, IN A BUSINESS, AND AS PARENTS, AND WHERE YOU WANT TO BE IN ONE YEAR AND TEN YEARS.”

and we lean into those strengths. Michael is also very quietly confident, which is helpful to me and the key to our relationship. My advice is to set a map of where you want to be in six months as a couple, in a business, and as parents, and where you want to be in one year and ten years. We spend a lot of time planning, and that goes for all aspects of our life.”

What’s next for this multifaceted, ever-evolving duo? According to Lauryn, the ultimate business goal has yet to be wholly envisioned. “Michael and I have a massive vision, and it’s something we work on every day. I feel like we haven’t even fully penetrated the potential—we have a lot of work to do. On a daily basis, we aim to create value, whether through a book, product, or live event. We want the community to leave feeling like it was worth their time. We’re going to continue to put out the best content we can in every single arena. This is only the beginning.”

Mildred Kirschenbaum, as a young woman

really only opened an Instagram account to promote my art photography before turning it over to Mildred,” says the Emmy-winning filmmaker whose Boca Raton-based mother has become, under her daughter’s expert direction, the world’s most famous centenarian.

Celebrated for her remarkable achievements by major media outlets across the US and throughout the world, Mildred is an astonishingly fit hundred-year-old who lives independently, drives herself to errands, pays her bills and trades stocks online, flies solo to join her daughter for transatlantic travel, and puts her longevity down to a positive attitude, a willingness to learn new skills—like how to film videos of herself—and milking the social benefits of happy hour to the max.

Since being introduced to the world by Gayle less than two years ago on Instagram and TikTok—a collaboration that neither would have predicted during their troubled earlier years—Mildred has attracted many

fans. These include famous ones: Maria Shriver, Jenna Bush, Real Housewives of New York star Ramona Singer, and singer-songwriter Jax, who sang “Happy Birthday” to Mildred the week of her centenary in front of twenty thousand fans at Orlando’s Amway Stadium. Mildred has also been welcomed as a brand partner by Oceania Cruises, on whose Vista vessel she celebrated her landmark birthday last summer. “We take an annual cruise together, and it was the previous year when I asked her to say on video how she felt about turning ninety-nine that I realized she had something to say the world might be waiting to hear,” says Gayle, who calls her mother “the queen of the one-liners.”

Mildred’s magic words? “I can’t believe I’m ninetynine and still have my marbles. I’m the luckiest woman in the world that I have a family I think adores me,” she told the camera. “Even if they don’t, they call, they check on me, and there are so many people who don’t hear from their family.”

Now, the enterprising daughter has parlayed her mother’s wit and wisdom into a new book, Mildred’s Mindset, to be published on March 8, 2024—International Women’s Day. “She is such a force at one hundred years old. It seemed the appropriate date to celebrate a wonderful example of a powerful woman,” says Gayle.

Certainly, an amazing level of positivity floods through Mildred’s soundbites. “You’ve got to enjoy life—you’re only walking through it once,” is her mission statement, which attracted more than two million views when she expounded it in a video posted in May last year. In daily doses, she advises other seniors how to mitigate the negatives of life with commands like, “If the food isn’t quite right, have an extra dessert” and “Don’t say you don’t know how to retrieve emails—there’s no such thing as ‘I don’t know.’” The woman who uses an iPad, an iPhone, and a desktop computer to stay in touch, play Wordle, and film herself dispensing advice adds, “We live in a tech world; either you go with the flow or you fall off the train.”

Now, Gayle is planning to monetize Mildred’s snippets of wit and wisdom by creating extra content for subscribers, a decision she admits has provoked opprobrium she never expected. “It came as a shock how quickly people can go from loving you to hating you. The subscription is only $4.99 a month and is not intended to replace the free stuff I’ll still be pushing out to all Mildred’s fans. But some do want more, and I’m working every hour of the day, rising at 4:30 a.m. to edit Mildred’s videos and fulfill an overwhelming demand for content.”

None of this entrepreneurial activity could have been foreseen by Gayle two decades ago when she was in the throes of recovery from an abusive childhood in which Mildred was the chief tormentor. The youngest of three siblings, she fled home in her teens, blocked out her past, and only started addressing her issues in the 2007 film My Nose, named for the facial feature that had been the lifelong subject of maternal criticism. The film’s release saw her featured in The Washington Post beneath the caption: “If you have a mother like Gayle Kirschenbaum, you better get yourself into psychoanalysis.”

The response of Mildred at the time, before she owned up to her problem with narcissism, was, “Wow, great. Bad press is better than no press. I’m on the cover of The Washington Post.”

Nearly a decade later, Gayle released “the hardest and most important film I ever made” after persuading her mother to accompany her to the shrink’s office and face up to the years of abuse, explore events from her own life which led up to it, and eventually offer the apology Gayle thought she would never hear.

The way the director-daughter of Look At Us Now, Mother! parlayed the success of that film, which toured the global festival circuit, into a second career she had never anticipated shows that the entrepreneur was always lurking unsuspected within her.

“To paraphrase that sentence about life being what happens when you are making other plans, I never expected to make films about myself or become a forgiveness coach,” says the New Yorker, who was overwhelmed by audience members who related to her story and inspired the forgiveness workshops she has been running for several years.

Following Mildred’s Mindset will be the more sobering volume, Bullied to Besties, which tells the whole story of the mother-daughter trauma and reconciliation, and Gayle’s new “No More Drama with Mama” online forgiveness course. “My target market is daughters of difficult mothers,” she explains, pointing out how women from backgrounds as diverse as Jewish, Indian, and African American have identified with her experience. “They come up to me after screenings to tell me I told their own story.”

When she gets back to her own personal projects and life goals—“Since Mildred became a full-time job, I have put my creative pursuits on hold and don’t have the bandwidth for a relationship”— Gayle plans to publish her memoir and return to her passion for fine art photography. She now has

plans for showing and selling her work through gallery links, realizing she has acquired monetizing skills she never dreamed of before becoming an accidental online entrepreneur. Finding the bandwidth may be another subject. “I don’t know what my emotional state will be like after my mother is gone,” she admits. “I’m doing all I can to give her things to look forward to and stay strong. But the way she’s going, I may well die before her!”

Tapping into Your LIMITLESS POTENTIAL

WOULD YOU RISK IT ALL TO LIVE A LIFE YOU LOVE?

What if every dream planted inside your heart, particularly the ones you think are “crazy” and “unrealistic,” was on the other side of a pivotal moment to choose to live differently? Those dreams are an invitation to live in alignment, make your own rules, and create your reality from the inside out. It all begins with your core beliefs about yourself and the world. This is manifestation at its finest: a representation of how our innate patterns, subconscious beliefs, and energetic frequencies impact how life unfolds around us.

Kathrin Zenkina, better known as the “Manifestation Babe” to her devoted online community of dreamers and spiritual seekers, has lived up to this challenge tenfold. Her journey with self-development, mindset, manifestation, leadership, and spirituality began at age twenty-three when she was at a crossroads between attending medical school as planned or going all in on a new business venture, which would later be called Manifestation Babe. During this time, one of her mentors encouraged her to attend a Tony Robbins event.

“At this four-day experience, I heard the infamous question whispered into my ear, ‘Kathrin, who are you living for?’” Zenkina shares. “My life forever changed when I answered that question, ‘I am living for everyone else but me.’ I realized that I was applying for medical school only because my parents wanted me to become a doctor. I was in a relationship that was two years overdue for a breakup. I was no longer happy living in the Pacific Northwest and wanted so badly to move back to Los Angeles, where I grew up. Even though I felt like I was crazy—and questioned how I could be so certain of breaking ties with every bit of my life that I was so familiar with, so quickly—I did it anyway.”

Trusting her intuition paid off, big time. “Something in me told me to buy a domain name, start a new Instagram account, and call it Manifestation Babe,” she recalls. “I didn’t know how it was all going to unfold. I had little money for an out-of-state move, so I took claim to my grandma’s couch. She so lovingly welcomed me into her home while I figured out where my life was headed next.”

As Zenkina dove deep into all things personal development and manifestation, she recognized her deep desire to teach others about Universal Laws and to help people cultivate new mindsets conducive to creating success. “Although letting go of my old life was extremely scary, I never felt more liberated. I wanted everyone to experience the freedom that came with living a life authentic to them. At the same time, I wondered, who would listen to a girl who is completely broke, living on her grandma’s couch? One evening, while scrolling through Instagram, I came across a Tony Robbins quote that said, ‘Begin to live as though your prayers are already answered.’ I felt a jolt of energy surge through my entire body as I thought, ‘Kathrin, what would it look like to go all in? To live as though your success is already inevitable? That everything you want is already guaranteed? What if I try this approach for just a year and see if it works? And if it doesn’t, I can always go back to the way things were. No harm, no foul. But if it does work, that would be the most amazing evidence that manifestation is real.’”

Zenkina’s infamous “one-year experiment” had officially begun. She asked herself how this aligned, leveled-up version of Kathrin would show up in everyday life: What are her beliefs? What is her morning routine like? What opportunities would she say yes or no to? Then, she embodied this version of herself daily. “I engaged in deep meditation to connect with my intuition, developed a fun visualization practice to call in the future I was creating, spoke my affirmations aloud, and completely changed how I talked to myself and others,” she shares. “Within a year, I took this brand new business, Manifestation Babe, from only making $9,000 to almost $600,000 the next year. I also got engaged to my new boyfriend in Bali, moved out of Grandma’s apartment into a hip luxury studio, and grew my Instagram following to over 50,000. All within a year.”

Since then, Zenkina has built a multimillion-dollar empire and served more than 150,000 soul-seekers through her various digital programs. She also hosts the top manifestation podcast in the world. Such a massive transformation requires you to let go of any self-imposed constructs along the way; Zenkina firmly believes that “imposter syndrome” is a green flag to be welcomed on your path. It signals that you are growing and pursuing new ways of being that feel uncomfortable to your old self.

This space in between—the uncomfortable transition between your old identity and new self—can feel like a shock to the nervous system. As part of

her one-year experiment, Zenkina worked to overcome her fear of public speaking and the shyness she had felt restricted by for most of her life. “I think a lot of us have been programmed by society to avoid discomfort at all costs, but it’s okay to experience discomfort and allow yourself to be in it,” she emphasizes. “What has helped me tremendously is learning nervous system regulation techniques like deep breathing, grounding, and tapping on meridian energy points. I also regularly clear out old fears from my childhood.”

Zenkina has released a series of life-changing programs over the years, perhaps most famously the Manifestation Babe Academy and now her Sovereign Money course, which both emphasize our relationship with building and retaining wealth. She teaches her students about the energies of money and how to rewire archaic beliefs stemming from scarcity, lack, and constantly feeling like you need to work harder to earn more.

“Many people think money is what they see in physical, tangible form—numbers in a bank account or bills in their wallets. But money is so much more than that. It’s made of energy whose flow responds to our consciousness,” she explains. “Bear with me for the quickest and only science lesson you’ll get in this article, as this is how my science brain has finally understood how this works:

“If you look at anything under a microscope, you’ll see that even the most solid objects are actually a bunch of vibrating molecules constantly in action. Within these molecules are individual atoms of smaller subatomic particles called the nucleus, which is made up of protons and neutrons, with electrons orbiting around the nucleus. The distance between the nucleus of an atom and the electron in orbit is so vast that if you were to blow up a single atom to the size of a football field, the nucleus would be the size of a pea in the center of the stadium and the electrons would be orbiting around the outside of the field—all the way in the parking lots!

“Why is this significant? Because atoms are 99.99 percent space. There is more space than there is actual physical matter. However, nothing in this universe is empty space. What actually occupies this space is energy. Everything is made of energy.

“In physics, it is said that everything that generates electricity also creates a magnetic field. Human beings generate electricity that can be measured using various devices like an EKG, which measures the electrical signals from the heart, or an EEG, which measures the brain’s electrical activity. This means that we, as humans, have a magnetic field that surrounds us. We are literally magnets!

“Now, remember how I brought up vibration? Everything in this physical world vibrates at a specific frequency—including money. We vibrate at the frequency of our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. The frequency we send out based on our belief systems around money will impact our experience with manifesting money.

“If we send out signals that say, ‘I’m broke,’ ‘I hate money,’ ‘money is the root of all evil,’ or ‘I don’t ever have enough money,’ the magnetic field, via the Law of Attraction, can only draw in like frequencies. Our experience of money will be reflected in these beliefs. On the other hand, if we send out signals that say, ‘I love money,’ ‘Money loves to support me,’ or ‘I always have enough money to do/create/have whatever I want,’ then you can imagine what kind of experiences you will draw into your reality based on these beliefs.

“Many people make the mistake of thinking money is tied to how hard you work, how much effort you put into something, and how much time you spend laboring on something. But this isn’t the case. The hardest-working people sometimes make the least amount of money. And the people who work the least will sometimes have the most money. Why is this so? Because money responds to frequency. Your frequency is set by your level of consciousness—the beliefs, emotions, and thoughts you spend the most time putting your attention on. Rather than working harder, I encourage my students to dive into their money beliefs first. That way, regardless of how much they work, they will always be a magnet to abundance.”

What are the best ways to rewire limiting beliefs? There are endless modalities to pick from, so we asked Zenkina about a few key favorites she regularly uses to tap into her highest expression. “Rapid Resolution Therapy is one of my go-to methods because of what a huge impact it makes on my life,” she begins. “Emotion Code has also been one of my favorite modalities recently for clearing out stuck energies that manifest as trapped emotions in the body. I also love the Emotional Freedom Technique, breathwork, and PSYCH-K (a muscle testing modality for clearing stresses and limiting beliefs).”

Even though Zenkina is a seasoned podcaster and interviewee, we were curious to know one thing she wished more people knew about her. She responded thoughtfully, explaining, “Even though I run a multi-seven-figure business and I seem like I have all my sh*t together, I’m just like anyone else. I didn’t get any handouts. There’s nothing particularly special about me other than I chose to pursue my purpose. I had a desire, and I claimed it.”

She admits, “I still have plenty of ‘off’ days where I experience self-doubt and feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. But the bottom line is if I can create my dream life, anybody can! I truly want to see everyone succeed. I believe we rise by lifting others, and my life’s purpose is to help people reach their fullest potential. There’s room for everyone at the top, and if I’m winning, I want to see as many people winning with me as possible.”

What has helped me tremendously is learning nervous system regulation techniques like deep breathing, grounding, and tapping on meridian energy points. I also regularly clear out old fears from my childhood.

The first step to regaining your inherent role as the author of your life story is straightforward: get crystal clear on what you want. “If you don’t know exactly what you desire, pay attention to the things you don’t want and then consider the opposite,” Zenkina emphasizes. “Once you know what you want, practice tuning into the feeling that brings you. For example, if you’re working a job you hate and all you can think about is how much you dread going to the office daily, ask yourself what kind of job you would rather have. How would it feel to do that kind of work each day? Then, tap into those feelings as often as possible. By doing this, you will start to rewire how you feel about your current situation and begin attracting experiences more aligned with the frequency of your desired state.”

She continues, “I also highly recommend plugging yourself into inspirational content in the entrepreneurial, spiritual, and mindset spaces. Become imaginary best friends with authors, speakers, CEOs, and teachers you want to learn from. Buy their books, watch all their free YouTube content, and subscribe to their podcasts. Take an hour a day (which can easily be broken into smaller chunks) and take in their level of consciousness. Allow their teachings and energy to penetrate your day-to-day experience, and in no time, you’ll start thinking, believing, feeling, and acting differently.”

If there was one piece of wisdom she wishes she could go back and tell her younger self, it would be this: “Wondering what could have been if you’d just gone for it will always be more painful than anything you’ll ever go through in the process of actually going for it. If you ever have the choice to bet on yourself—always bet on yourself. And, finally, what’s meant for you will always be for you,” she continues. “You’re not too late. There are no missed opportunities. The desires in your heart were placed there because they are your destiny and will unfold in perfect timing.”

She broke the internet with her brand, Hot Smart Rich, challenging societal norms that say women cannot embody all three of those characteristics. On her social channels, Sellers encourages women to claim their confidence and offers her latest perspectives in venture capital and unfiltered segments of her life as a serial entrepreneur and investor living in Beverly Hills. VIE: Tell our readers a little bit about you. How did you begin angel investing, and how did your experiences in venture capital lead you to start Hot Smart Rich?

Maggie Sellers: I started my career in sales and as a brand marketer. So, I know how to build brands that resonate and sell them to consumers. When I moved to LA, I started working in brand management in the entertainment industry and helped two record labels start their corporate venture arms to help diversify income streams for their artists. Think about Joe Jonas investing in Ohza—I was part of that. From there, I transitioned into celebrity deal-making in the consumer space. Remember Sofia Richie becoming the face of Nudestix—I was part of that. From all that experience and building my network of founders and investors, I had a natural “in” to angel investing and getting into venture capital. I’ve always spent my career in male-dominated industries and companies. Investing was no different, but I finally felt it was the right time to build a community around women, and that’s how I started Hot Smart Rich.

VIE: What does it mean to embody Hot Smart Rich energy?

MS: My whole life, I was taught I can only be one of those things: hot, smart, or rich. I started HSR to empower women to know that they can be anything they want to be and should not be bound by the societal constructs people expect us to operate in. And yes, it is so polarizing. When I started making videos saying, “I am hot, smart, and rich,” people were like, “Is this satire?” My response has always been, “Why is it so hard for you to hear a woman say that?” We need to start letting women feel empowered to be whoever they want and stop putting them in these boxes. Talk about money, claim rich energy, claim being hot, claim being smart.

VIE : What are your hopes for the future of women in startup culture, venture capital, and investing? How does this connect to your mission behind HSR Ventures?

MS: The thesis of HSR Ventures is to invest in the start-ups we believe are the next generation of category-defining brands and services that empower a woman as she evolves throughout her role in society. We value innovation that empowers and improves relationships, motherhood, careers, financial security, women’s health, and better living. Did you know in 2022, women controlled 85 percent of consumer spending in the US but only got 2 percent of venture capital dollars? That year, $149 billion was invested into start-ups, and female founders only received $3 billion of that. Our thesis is the cornerstone of HSR, and given the headwinds that female investors and entrepreneurs face, I hope HSR will be part of changing that statistic.

VIE : What is the greatest lesson you have learned from directly working with founders? What is a common thread or quality that each of these founders shares? Do you feel this trait is undervalued in society?

MS: Never give up, and be delusionally confident that you will win. All the founders I work with have such a sense of conviction and purpose that what they’re doing or building will change the world. They are driven to continue moving and iterating to find the perfect product for their communities. I don’t necessarily think confidence and being driven are undervalued in society, but I don’t think people understand how truly important it is to have these qualities if you’re going to be a founder who wins.

VIE : What has been your biggest “failure,” and how have you since used that experience to contribute to your success?

MS: This isn’t necessarily a “failure” but a shortcoming I’ve worked to overcome: The venture capital ecosystem is small and closed. A lot of gatekeeping happens, and you have to know the right people or have gone to the right school or worked at an investment bank to get your foot in the door. I didn’t have any of those things when I started. I grew up in Toronto, Canada, went to college in London, Ontario, and came from the branding world. The deck was stacked against me. I’ve had to learn on my own dime and prove myself in this industry, and that has made me successful!

VIE: Please share what consumer brands you have invested in and what industries you are looking to expand in (or predict will be hot topics in 2024).

MS: My most recent investment was in Locker. Locker is a social shopping tool and platform revolutionizing how the everyday consumer shops online. We are building a platform that autonomizes and automates the consumer shopping experience by providing a tool to make organized wish lists while using the data from our user base to provide a personalized product feed and recommendations based on the user’s brand, price, and style preferences. I’ve spent the last two years advising the CEO, Kristine Locker, and she has become one of my best friends. So, not only am I an investor, but I feel like I’ve been building alongside her, which is the best feeling ever. I’m on a high! This is the first time I’ve put more money in when I already own a percentage of the company, and honestly, it is such a great feeling to see one of your founders win.

Other notable investments I have in the consumer space are Allara Health, De Soi, Deux, Upkeep Beauty, Mixlab, and Sydecar.

This year, HSR Ventures is going to continue doubling down on women’s health as a category.

The piece combines elements of the statues at different hours of the day, creating a surreal effect leaning toward abstract iconography.

sk any artist about the trials and tribulations of taking a creative form they love and turning it into an entrepreneurial endeavor. Chances are, they will tell you it’s one of the hardest things they have ever done. Making your passion a full-time job and forging your path can mean sacrifice, struggle, and continual evolution. Robert Malmberg, a visual artist based in New

York, has experienced multiple seasons of his life and work, from working in nature and landscape photography to designing unique wallpaper and textiles or works on canvas. His latest collection, Sum of Our Parts, is another new step in his career, currently featured in a solo exhibition on display at the NoMo SoHo hotel on Crosby Street in New York.

“Creativity has always felt like a necessity for me,” Malmberg says, expressing a well-known need among passionate artists. “When I don’t make time for it, I can feel a bit lost or even irritable. It is an extension of myself and my thoughts and helps keep me grounded.”

“My Inkblot Studies series is a grid of nine prints inspired by Hermann Rorschach’s famous inkblot tests,” says Robert Malmberg.

“These were handmade in the studio using acrylic on textured watercolor paper, then photographed and recombined to create abstract and symmetrical shapes that engage viewers differently. In this space, we are all connected, we are all invited, and we can all be right.”

Still, there is a big difference between an artist who creates for creation’s sake and one who decides to make it their full-time career. Malmberg has experienced the challenge of balance that most entrepreneurs, especially in creative fields, would agree is one of the most difficult parts of their journey. “Like other entrepreneurs and self-starters, I am forced to wear many hats to keep everything moving and growing in the right direction,” he says. “It can be tricky to navigate all the necessary administrative, production, and marketing efforts while freeing up blocks of time for unhindered creative sessions in the studio.”

However, when people love what you create, it can make all the challenging times worth it. Malmberg says, “There are countless rewards—top of mind being the ability to share my vision with the world and connect with people in person. It is the highest compliment to receive a new art commission, wallpaper order, or request to collaborate on a design project with someone who loves my work! It stokes my fire and gives me a feeling of genuine purpose in my daily life.”

ven though they love creating art, professional artists are like any other working person; they need inspiration and new experiences to keep things fresh and avoid burnout. “My processes are always changing, and I celebrate both the challenges and freedom that arise from experimentation,” Malmberg shares. The effort shows in his body of work, which spans several mediums. But whether he’s working on paper or canvas, digitally or through textiles, there is often a visual continuity of sorts: “I’ve always used many layers in my artwork, which enables me to arrange numerous visuals, angles, and ideas into one piece. Whether I’m behind the camera or standing in front of an easel, the common thread is that I strive to express and discover something new through the medium or mediums at hand. I consider myself a mixedmedia artist and find it deeply satisfying to combine multiple techniques (like mixing photographs with paintings) to harness new outcomes. I usually start each piece with some loose concept or sketches, only to arrive at something completely unexpected.”

In his collages, such as those featured in his latest collection, he says, “My eye is drawn to the unusual scenes and gritty details we encounter in our day-today lives: an ornate flower arrangement, a shoddy paint job, subway mishaps, decorative tchotchkes, discarded technology, dilapidated billboards, and bizarre culinary treats. I like to think of the culmination of these fleeting images within my collages as our ‘collective patina’ as humans—a mashup of subject matter that suggests a deeper understanding of our passage through time and space and an ongoing discovery of our evolving cultural narratives. The works reflect my curiosity about the human mind and its ability to tap into an endless well of subconscious symbols, ideas, and stories.”

almberg has also created photographic patterns that he transformed into a unique collection of wallpaper and textiles (see more in the article “Hitting the Wall” at VIEmagzine.com). Making these products calls for a different mindset, he says. “While my approach to wallpaper and textile design is still very creative, it requires me to think more analytically about how interior designers and clients will ultimately use the patterns in their special projects. The design process for me reaches a point where it has to be exacting and technically perfect for the purposes of installation and functionality for the end user.”

On the other hand, his studio art is “a place where all rules can (and do) go out the window,” he says. “I can bask in the imperfections and express things that are more raw, abstract, and personal to my uninterrupted vision and thought process. I hope my current exhibit resonates as playful, imaginative, and even bizarre for the viewer. I love showing these works to people who see things in them that I’ve never noticed myself.”

Malmberg calls Sum of Our Parts—a collection of large-scale mixed-media art that includes collages and works on paper—a “nonlinear approach to street photography that features an urban contemporary backdrop and layers of original photographs utilized in unconventional ways.” His goal to create evocative forms and newly discovered archetypes is achieved through blending fine photography, pop art, and surrealism in “an exploration of the mystery and playfulness of our human subliminal experience.”

The collection is displayed prominently throughout the lobby and reception areas of NoMo SoHo, resulting from a serendipitous collaboration with the hotel’s team. “The gorgeous, expansive lobby at NoMo SoHo is very complementary to this body of work,” Malmberg shares. “High ceilings, clean blank walls, and contemporary furnishings made the installation and curation process relatively easy. I did some digital mockups and measurements in advance to help visualize the layout and remove some guesswork. The works arrived on time, professionally framed, and ready for installation. Smooth sailing.”

ost-exhibit, Malmberg has much in store for 2024 and beyond— namely, spending a lot of time in his art and design studio in Long Island City, just across the East River from his Upper East Side residence. “I’m very pleased to announce that I’m making more time to paint!” he shares. “I’m working on some new large canvases using acrylic and oil paints. The series has undertones of abstract expressionism and synthetic cubism, two painting styles I’ve been drawn to for many years. I’m enjoying the results so far, playing with interesting colors and contrasting ideas. More than anything, I love how painting enables me to access an analog experience and work continuously for hours on end without distraction. I listen to a lot of classical music while working on large compositions. The therapeutic value is extremely high!”

We’re looking back on another incredible 30A Songwriters Festival! With over 225 performances, 175 artists, and 30 unique stages across South Walton, Florida, the 30A Songwriters Festival is the largest gathering of nationally recognized songwriters performing on the Florida coast. This year, from January 12–15, headliners Jeff Tweedy, Elvis Costello & the Imposters, Rosanne Cash, Grace Potter, Rodney Crowell, and KT Tunstall rocked the Main Stage at Grand Boulevard Town Center while dozens of other artists played in venues around the area. Making this eagerly awaited long weekend each year even better, the net proceeds from the festival benefit the Cultural Arts Alliance. This local arts agency supports creatives and the arts through leadership, advocacy, funding, programs, and education in Walton County and beyond.

The festival weekend started with a buzz as the VIE team grabbed our passes at Festival Headquarters in Cerulean Park, WaterColor. From the get-go, the atmosphere was electric, resonating with the collective excitement of music enthusiasts from every corner of the country (and some beyond). We viewed the silent auction items, featuring an impressive range of goodies, from signed guitars and artwork to an electric bike, unique experiences, and more. After perusing the silent auction items, we headed toward the expansive wall showcasing an array of festival merchandise. In line, cheerful festival-goers waited their turn to snag their favorite pieces.

We look forward to hearing new and familiar artists across various venues and genres year after year. It is truly incredible to experience the personal stories of the songwriters behind some of the biggest hits in music or hear about an artist’s first time performing at the 30A Songwriters Festival. From large outdoor stages to the coziest cafes in town, each setting brings a unique element to the experience.

A weekend highlight for VIE marketing director Kelly Curry and editor Jordan Staggs was reconnecting with artists David Ryan Harris, Chris Stills, and Paul McDonald. In early December, Curry and Staggs caught these talented individuals performing at the Songwriters in Paradise festival in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. To kick off a weekend filled with music for 30A Fest, the team enjoyed their Friday night performances at Caliza in Alys Beach.

During his first set, Paul McDonald performed with Sarah Clanton, who blew the audiences away on the electric cello. Chris Stills shared intriguing tidbits about his jet-setting lifestyle, shuttling between Paris and Los Angeles before making his way to the festival. He also sang a beautiful song entirely in French. DRH mentioned he’s been making house calls (as Dr. H) for small party events, adding a personal touch to his musical ventures.

Our team also had the pleasure of catching an intimate set at Bud & Alley’s by Grammy winner John Paul White, who delivered a soul-stirring performance of the song “Safe & Sound.” He wrote this hit in collaboration with Taylor Swift, Joy Williams, and T Bone Burnett as part of The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond, the official companion soundtrack to the 2012 blockbuster film The Hunger Games.

On the Main Stage at Grand Boulevard, audiences enjoyed an atmosphere rivaling any big music festival and a fantastic lineup throughout the weekend. Grace Potter delivered a stellar performance that was certainly a crowd favorite. Her humor and joy while performing added an extra layer of excitement. I was particularly thrilled to hear “Something That I Want,” the song by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals featured in the Disney film Tangled and currently trending on TikTok. The Main Stage had a bustling vibe this year, and the crowd’s energy just amped up the fun factor!

And let’s not forget seeing one of our favorites, Sammi Accola, at the Pearl in Rosemary Beach. Her energetic stage presence, heartfelt songwriting, and killer vocals left VIE editor-in-chief Lisa Burwell and brand ambassador Marta Rata in awe. It’s hard to pick a favorite thing about Sammi; from her vibe onstage to her songwriting skills and voice, she’s the whole package. We are excited to watch her career continue rising.

As we wrap up another year of musical memories, the 30A Songwriters Festival leaves us with a playlist of moments we’ll be replaying until next year.

Aviator Nation is a wildly popular 1970s-inspired California lifestyle brand headed by soulful entrepreneur and vibrant creator Paige Mycoskie. Retro influences resurface in modern times to draw consumers to Mycoskie’s original designs, ranging from cozy sweatpants and sweatshirts to activewear designed for surfing and skiing. Beyond her wildly successful journey with Aviator Nation, making her one of the wealthiest self-made women in the United States (her current net worth is estimated at $380 million dollars), Mycoskie

an individualist, outdoor enthusiast, and loving soul. We asked her to give us a look into her creative psyche, from business advice to honest questions about things she values, fears, and hopes for. This is Paige Mycoskie—the entrepreneur, the creative, the explorer, and the real, badass human—unfiltered.

VIE: Congratulations on your massive success and growth over the past eighteen years! As the company has grown, have you stayed hands-on or shifted your position within the brand? What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who want to scale their businesses?

PAIGE MYCOSKIE:

Thank you! I am still extremely hands-on. The only difference now is I work mostly remotely because I like to travel, which is good for my inspiration. I live in a few different places but am primarily based in Austin, Texas. I used to work in the factory every day, but I’ve built a team I trust, so now I can work from wherever life takes me. When we are building new stores, I travel to each location and still help with painting the murals and all the creative decisions with the build-outs. When we are doing big lifestyle photo shoots, I am always on-site, so I travel to wherever we are doing those, as well. So yes, I am still very hands-on. I still design everything we make and approve every print and top-of-production sample for

each garment. I am the CEO, creative director, and lead designer—and of course, very involved in all of the financial decisions, employee recruiting, and operations.

I have an amazing team—most have been with me for over eight years and some over ten years—so everyone pretty much knows me and knows what I want. My team is my family, and we all enjoy working together. It makes it more fun, and I feel truly blessed to have this team. It’s definitely my biggest asset!

VIE: Where do you draw inspiration from when designing each piece of merchandise at Aviator Nation? How do you continually innovate and produce fresh designs that you love and are on brand?

PM: Designing the clothes is actually the easiest part for me because I simply make what I want to wear. Luckily, I have ideas all the time about what I want to wear, so it keeps me busy designing new styles year-round. A lot of times, I’m inspired by nature—specifically the colors I see there. I spend a lot of time outdoors in the mountains in Aspen, at the lake in Austin, and at the beach in California. I’m also continually inspired by vintage influences, whether it’s an old sports car, my vintage skateboard collection, or old album covers. I have a lot of vintage items, so inspiration is around me all the time.

he way we stay on brand is that it’s always something I would personally wear, and I have a really specific style. I always ask myself, “Would I wear this?” and if the answer is no, then I don’t do it. My style is pretty random at times, which is why sometimes the designs I drop are a bit funky. I just do what I’m feeling at that moment and try not to think too much about it, and that keeps it real and authentic.

VIE: Why the name Aviator Nation?

PM: I grew up collecting aviator sunglasses after discovering the movie Top Gun. As a young girl, Top Gun was my favorite, and I had the movie poster on my wall throughout most of my life. I always had this theory that everyone looked sexier and more badass when wearing aviator sunglasses. The word “nation” comes from my desire to build a company that brings people together. The original tagline was “rad clothes for rad people,” and I always wanted the brand to bring people together. Now, with nineteen stores and having hosted hundreds of concerts and community events, I can confidently say the brand has brought great people together.

VIE: What’s one thing that scares you?

PM: I actually have this thing about fear: I think it’s the root of all evil. Even in my childhood bedroom, I had a poster that said “No Fear”! But obviously, we all have things that scare us, so I’m digging deep and trying to think of something right now, haha. I guess one thing that scares me is fear itself, so I try not to fall into it. I also hate snakes.

VIE: Reflecting on your journey, please share one significant thing you believe has contributed to your success.

PM: One key takeaway is to always remain positive, calm, and patient even when sh*t hits the fan. When you run your own company—specifically a fashion company with nearly seven hundred employees— sh*t hits the fan often, and you can’t let it get to you. I have learned to be positive and patient when times are hard and, most of all, to remain calm and collected when major struggles arise. I have to be

tough no matter what is happening because it’s extremely important that my team believes in me, too. The only way they will believe in me is if they think I can handle big challenges, and I can confidently say my team knows I can handle anything that comes our way. I really believe success starts with a positive mindset, so I try to always have that. So far, we’ve pushed through multiple recessions and a total shutdown during COVID-19. I kept my team employed and told them every day it was all going to be OK, even on my darkest days. I keep my head up and do my best to work through whatever comes my way. That has played a big role in my success, specifically in the respect my team has for me.

VIE: What do you wish more people knew about attaining wealth and building their dream company? What has your real and unfiltered journey looked like? Is there anything you wish you could go back and tell your younger self as you started the brand in 2006?

PM: I wish more people knew how truly hard it is. I think a lot of young people nowadays think being an entrepreneur and starting a company is easy. Sure, you can start something pretty easily, but making it stick is different. Running a business is extremely hard work, and you have to truly be dedicated to the journey because along with the ups come a lot of downs. I would tell young people they can do it, and they should definitely try—but be prepared for a lot of hard work and challenges along the

way. You have to be tough more than anything, and if you can’t be tough, then don’t waste your time.

My journey has never slowed down for a minute, but I enjoy that. I love challenges, constant change, and working hard. I’m definitely doing something really hard, and fashion is by far one of the most competitive industries, but all of this suits me because I love the journey. If it were easy, I wouldn’t have fun.

As far as what I would have told my younger self, I would have just said hang in there and be tough. I may have said don’t trust everyone because, in the early days, I definitely ran into some untrustworthy people, but it’s fine because I learned from those experiences, and now I know. But I would have told my younger self to let the hard times roll off of you as quickly as possible. Don’t

waste energy being worried if everyone who works for you is happy all the time, as well. I definitely went through some times when I worried about my employees too much, and now I know that I can’t make everyone happy all the time. I have a great team, and I’ve had very few hiccups with staff, but when I was younger, I wasted too much energy worrying about people.

VIE:

One of the things we admire most about you is how down-to-earth you are and how you have stayed true to your authentic self and style. What advice would you give our readers on avoiding comparison, trusting your gut even when it means doing something unconventional, and becoming the most aligned version of yourself?

PM: Being authentic to yourself is literally everything. The minute you lose yourself or try to be someone you’re not (or a company you’re not) is the minute you lose what makes you unique and different—ultimately, your brand becomes somebody else’s. I truly believe authenticity is critical and one of the main reasons I’ve been able to last as long as I have. I do not succumb to trends. I try to always be original, and everything I design comes from within me and is not focused on what others are doing.

VIE: Please speak a little bit about your decision to retain complete ownership of your brand. Was that an easy decision, or did it come at the cost of faster scalability?

PM: I have turned down a lot of big money along the way. Sure, it was tempting at times, but I knew taking money from others meant losing control. I always knew I could do it best myself, so giving up control could mean the company would not do as well as it would with me running the show. This brand is my passion, and I rely on my gut most of the time when making big decisions. If I had to call a board of people every time I had to make a big decision, I think we would have suffered. So no, I didn’t have a lot of money for many years while I chose to do it on my own, but now it’s all paying off because I’m successful. I still own 100 percent, which makes the company even more valuable. Also, I never wanted to scale too fast, as I’m sure investors would have wanted. I really believe in slow, steady growth and building strong roots, which is exactly what I’ve done over the last eighteen years.

VIE: What is your favorite collaboration, collection, or piece you have designed?

PM: My favorite thing I’ve designed so far is my latest release, the patch collection. I have been designing patches for the past eighteen years, and for the first time ever, I put a huge assortment of them all onto one garment. It was an amazing challenge to bring it to life because I wanted every top to have a bottom with different patches from the top, and I wanted every color set to be different from the others. I also wanted a good assortment of garments, including hoodies, sweatpants, and even an outerwear jacket and backpack that would all look great when worn together as a set. Every detail of every patch had to be perfect. I literally approved every thread color, every patch size, and the exact placement of each patch on each garment. It was a great challenge to bring it to life and very expensive to make, because every patch was first created individually and then hand sewn onto the garments one by one with precise placement. So, with

I try to always be original, and everything I design comes from within me and is not focused on what others are doing.

that said, it was by far the most challenging of all the collections and also my favorite to date. Did I mention I love a challenge?

VIE: What impact do you hope Aviator Nation will have on the world? If you could leave customers with one key message, what would it be?

PM: I think Aviator Nation will impact the world in many ways. One of the biggest is that people will see a major brand manufacturing their clothing in America. I hope it will inspire other companies to do so in the future. I feel really strongly about producing my products in the US and creating jobs for our citizens. Yes, it makes clothes more expensive because of the extremely high cost of running a business in America, but the point is it is possible and very rewarding. I also believe it leads to better quality, which ultimately means fewer garments going into landfills. So many people shop for fast fashion and the cheap products that are made overseas; I get it because people are on a budget, but the bigger picture is owning fewer garments of higher quality and supporting American jobs.

If I could leave my customers with one key message, I would say thank you for supporting us because you are supporting a movement toward making garments in America and sustainable, higher-quality fashion. A huge part of the price you pay goes directly to the labor force, and they are extremely appreciative of their jobs in our factory and around the country in our stores.

VIE: What’s next for you? What are you manifesting for Aviator Nation or personally in the year to come?

PM: I plan to spend a lot of time this year on design and development. I want to continue releasing new products monthly as we did last year so we can keep our fans excited about something new. I also want to dive into developing other categories like sneakers, which are a big passion of mine. I love designing, and this year, I’m going to challenge myself to really push out some epic new gear.

Another thing I’m working on is my book. I love to write, and I think I finally have enough meat for a story worth reading. It will be my story of building my brand

but also a story of passion and grit. There are a lot of fun details and challenges that people have never heard, and I’m excited to share the whole story with the world.

Personally, I think it’s finally time for me to start building a family (other than my two furry boys). My girlfriend and I have an amazing relationship, and we are excited to start moving into the next chapter.

NIKITA KARIZMA is the name on everyone’s lips in the fashion world.

The British-Indian fashion designer and creative director, known for her innovative use of metallics and crystals and culturally-inspired silhouettes, knows how to turn heads. With a rich background rooted in her family’s third-generation Indian saree business, Karizma draws inspiration from the traditional saree (or sari)—a versatile garment elegantly draped around the body in various styles, often worn by women of South Asian heritage. What truly sets her apart is her skill in blending this cultural element with the provocative and forward-thinking influences she absorbed from the vibrant London scene, characterized by its famous nightlife, edgy street style, and innovative art and music. With these diverse influences at the forefront of Karizma’s creative expression, her designs are anything but boring.

Karizma’s eponymous label has not only captivated the fashion world but has also become a favorite among celebrities like Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga, Madison Beer, and Winnie Harlow. Her designs have also been favored by many Bollywood stars—another source of inspiration for the designer—highlighting her broad approval across cultures. It’s evident that behind her success lies a deep-rooted passion for design and a commitment to originality. Through her approach, she showcases the importance of a personal brand and the power of sticking to one’s creative vision in a social media-driven world that typically favors fast fashion. As a creative director, Karizma remains authentic to her roots while embracing innovation—a sparkling recipe for success that she shares more about below.

VIE: Could you tell us about your background, particularly how your experiences and heritage led you to become a fashion designer?

Nikita Karizma: I come from a third-generation family-run retail business specializing in the Indian saree. Growing up in a South Asian fashion family, I had the incredible opportunity to work with local artisans in India and develop my love and skills for fashion and design. My family encouraged me to pursue this by studying at the London College of Fashion. Upon graduating, I received requests for custom orders from influential pop culture figures, and I realized I had something. I quickly transitioned from collaborating on projects to opening my ready-to-wear label and haven’t looked back.

VIE: After your £2000 custom order for Little Mix, how did that early achievement guide your approach to design and business operations?

NK: I was so grateful that my student work from the London College of Fashion was bought by the British music group Little Mix. Those were my very first orders and helped me launch the business. I learned how to commercialize innovative design as well as budget for fabrics and sewing time, and understand the value of every pound. Building a business from the ground up and bootstrapping helped me learn to make practical decisions in a competitive and increasingly saturated market.

VIE: With your brand having roots in both Indian heritage and London’s rebellious undercurrent, how do these influences converge in your designs?

NK: We have influences of both Indian glamour and London rebellion embedded in our creative aesthetic. The Nikita Karizma brand identity is fun, edgy, glitzy, and elegant. I love the effect of seeing metallics and crystals catch the light. We ensure all our products are produced with a good quality of craftsmanship. Our clothes are produced in factories in India, which is special for me to go back to my cultural heritage and stay connected through this part of my business. Eastern craftsmanship is always running through the label. I love seeing women across Los Angeles, London, and Mumbai wearing our designs; it makes me feel so happy that creativity can cross cultures.

VIE: Could you highlight a design or collection of yours that merges your British-Indian heritage with modern fashion trends?

NK: There is an incredible 1990s-style chainmail dress that Paris Hilton wore for her music video from our collection. Paris is the ultimate it girl of Hollywood, and this was such an iconic moment in pop culture reminiscent of her early 2000s era. The design had really lovely drape details that were hand-sewn, and it reminded me of the draping of an Indian saree over the hips.

VIE: How do you navigate the balance between maintaining a signature style and experimenting with new ideas in your designs?

NK: We love developing new ideas to move our brand forward and stay relevant. Fashion and pop culture move so fast in this social media-driven age. We always try to think, “What would we wear in our studio?” We also test and push design forward. My team is very experimental; we love trying new techniques. Being British-Indian, I will always explore the relationship between the London rebellion and glamour from India while exploring where my creativity takes me each day.

VIE: You’ve worked with numerous A-list celebrities and created pieces for iconic music videos. Could you share your most memorable experience from these high-profile collaborations?

NK: Our A-list clientele wear Nikita Karizma to their various high-profile events. Paris Hilton has been so sweet and supportive of my label in America, and we’ve had a “break the internet” viral moment together when she wore our chainmail dress to film with her BFF Kim Kardashian. In the UK, I go into fittings with our clients and work on sets backstage and at their recording studios and music label offices. I love exploring the relationship between fashion, music, and popular culture.

VIE: You recently had an iconic fashion moment on the British Fashion Awards carpet. Can you tell us more about your custom outfit and the process of creating it?

NK: I had an idea to wear a 3D crystallized lobster for the Fashion Awards red carpet. Sparkly and crystallized designs are part of our brand’s signature aesthetic. The lobster is an iconic symbol of surrealism in fashion and art; we wanted to design Mr. Lobster for the modern-day it girl. It was such a success; the piece turned out beautifully, and I paired it with a glossy, wet, fresh-out-of-the-ocean beauty look. I really love creating custom pieces like this with my team.

VIE: You emphasize a “service of giving back” in your brand philosophy. How has this shaped the way you conduct business?

NK: Giving back is at the heart of my business. For me, life’s purpose is to be of service to others. The whole team gets involved in our repurposed tote bag project, where we turn production scraps into tote bags to give to charity. We also do a plant-a-tree project that we work on during Earth Month. We especially love supporting women-focused charities, such as Sakhi for Girls Education in Mumbai and Sathira Dhammasathan Buddhist Sanctuary in Bangkok. Having a purpose behind the passion is very grounding and motivating to keep doing our best work and make an overall positive impact on the world.

VIE: Looking at your trajectory, what advice would you give to emerging designers about turning a creative vision into a viable business?

NK: Fashion is my long-term commitment; it’s my life. You have to fully develop your craft, understand what works uniquely for your business, and take your time to invest in the future. The industry’s top designers, whether it’s Donatella Versace or Rick Owens, have been in business for decades. It doesn’t happen overnight. I would advise emerging designers to develop a signature, consistent aesthetic and learn your audience to best appeal to them.

VIE: What’s next for the Nikita Karizma brand in 2024? Are there new ventures or markets you’re exploring?

NK: We are currently under construction for our new studio HQ workspace in London. It’s going to be a space of creative exploration, a home for the brand, and a showroom for our incredible clients from around the globe. I am so excited about this project; you have to come and visit us! We are going to continue to spread light and love through the power of fashion across markets, empowering women in their creativity and individuality.

30TH SEASIDE PRIZE CEREMONY

The weekend of February 2–4, 2024, saw architecture and town-planning professionals from around the globe visit Seaside, Florida, as the Seaside Institute hosted the thirtieth Seaside Prize Weekend. Attendees toured the coastal towns of Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Alys Beach, attended lectures from world-renowned experts in creating and sustaining livable communities, and celebrated the 2024 Seaside Prize recipients, Victor Dover and Joseph Kohl of Dover, Kohl & Partners. Platinum sponsor E. F. San Juan honored Dover and Kohl with mahogany prize boxes crafted by founder Edward F. San Juan.
