FOUNDER’S NOTE

FOUNDER’S NOTE

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON By Rudina Hoxha & Jose Pinto

Jose Pinto • Founder

This statement is so true in many sectors but so obvious in the hospitality sector. Usually the father, a seasoned hotelier, took his little son, with him everywhere and he, consciously or unconsciously, infused in him the skills of his profession. Or a mother, an elegant general manager of a luxurious hotel, would inherit a daughter, so talented in the field of hospitality that would raise her name and the brand of the hotel to the highest heights. Looking at your breeds following your steps is the greatest feeling ever and the biggest pleasure in life. Due to age, health issues, or various reasons, parents pass their businesses over to their breeds and they are the ones who run the companies or the hotels. Responsibility is higher and the heart beats faster.

Rudina Hoxha • Co-Founder

The Founder of Trailblazing Magazine, a hotelier of almost 50 years, from the amazing Island of Madeira, Portugal, has a son who has followed his steps. Since he was 5 years old, he would go after his father in the premises of the hotel in Huatulco, Mexico. He would keep a little notebook and a pencil to take notes. Today he is the pride of the hotel where he serves. After all, the son of the fish should know how to swim.

International waters and in this context, he never forgets to get on the planes and be proud of his roots. Mr. Gabriel David Gunesekere, Head of Development International - The Clarks Hotels & Resorts has followed his father’s steps in aviation. His father, coming from the airline industry, left behind a son with an everlasting desire for planes. Having been from an airline family, Gabriel is an exact example of connecting tourism with aviation. During his work in the hospitality industry, he tries to expand the presence of The Clarks Hotels & Resorts in the

Father and son were so similar even in terms of their linguistic abilities. Gabriel’s father used to speak 14 foreign languages, of them 8 fluently whereas Gabriel speaks 7 foreign languages, of them 4 fluently. Even his mother used to speak 6 foreign languages, of them 5 fluently... And the most epitomical case of FatherSon example in the world of hospitality is found in Marriott Empire. In 2022, Mr. David Marriott humbly and honored assumed the role as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Marriott International as his father, Mr. Bill Marriott transitioned to Chairman Emeritus after 37 years leading the Board and 66 years of service to the company. This case is so inspiring and full of learnings.

Mr. Gabriel David Gunesekere 7

Such cases mentioned above and many hundreds or thousands around the world are so important because they revive and forge the legacy of the true hospitality and the family and business culture. The breeds are those who develop the companies and the professions. They are the ones who bring innovation and more energy to such a noble industry.

MANY PRESTIGIOUS EVENTS TO BE TAKEN CARE IN 2024

I would like to highlight the second Sarajevo Tourism Summit, scheduled for 23rd and 24th of April 2024. Just before that, at the end of February, we are organizing Sarajevo Premium Nights, Winter Edition.

Business Concierge Center Sarajevo (BCC Sarajevo) is a company specialized in organizing business events, seminars, and conferences, playing a key role in promoting Bosnia and Herzegovina as a destination for business meetings. In this regard, we are talking to Mr. Enis Hadžimujić, the director of BCC Sarajevo, who will share his rich experience and thoughts with us on the challenges and opportunities in the event organization industry, tourism, and enhancing the business culture and reputation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the global business world.

How does Business Concierge Center Sarajevo assist clients in event organization, and what are the main challenges they face in this business?

BUSINESS CONCIERGE

BUSINESS CONCIERGE

About tourism, successful business, and business opportunities.

Business Concierge Center Sarajevo (BCC Sarajevo) is a company that provides services to assist clients in organizing various events. Our main goal is to facilitate the planning and execution process for clients, covering various types of events such as conferences, seminars, meetings, or other business and social gatherings. We assist clients in consultancy and planning, involving the definition of goals and eventrelated needs. This includes selecting dates, venues, budgets, and other key factors.

Logistics play a crucial role, and event organization encompasses many logistical tasks, such as hotel/venue reservations, transportation, catering, technical support, and other services. BCC Sarajevo helps coordinate all these details to ensure a smooth event. It’s worth mentioning that event marketing and promotion can also be crucial for attracting participants. We assist clients in developing marketing strategies and communicating with the target audience. We also pay close attention to technical equipment and support, often essential for the successful execution of events. BCC Sarajevo can help organize technical support, including audio-visual services, internet, and other technological needs. 12

JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

13

The biggest challenges that BCC Sarajevo and their clients may face in event organization include the demanding work within a limited budget while providing a high-quality event experience. Managing many different elements of an event requires good coordination and communication among various suppliers and participants. Unforeseen issues, such as weather conditions, technical malfunctions, or schedule changes, can cause stress and require quick reactions. BCC Sarajevo addresses these challenges by providing expert guidance and support to clients, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve successful events.

Working on large projects involving the opening and development of hotels, as well as hotel operations, has always provided additional motivation and challenge. The goal has always been the satisfaction derived from a job well done. What are the major challenges facing the tourism industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and how can they be overcome?

We assist clients in developing marketing strategies and communicating with the target audience. We also pay close attention to technical equipment and support, often essential for the successful execution of events

14

What is your favourite event that you have organized, and which one was the most challenging?

The tourism industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina has significant potential that we are all aware of, but it also faces challenges that hinder its development. I would highlight the persistent lack of adequate tourism infrastructure, such

as modern hotels, roads, and airports, which can limit the attractiveness of the destination. Investments in infrastructure development can improve conditions for tourists and attract more visitors. Additionally, there is a lack of diversification in the tourism offering, which could help alleviate pressure on larger destinations and provide more options for visitors. Emphasis should be placed on improving standards and service quality in hotels, restaurants, and other tourist facilities, which are crucial for visitor satisfaction. Education and training of staff, as well as the application of international standards, can enhance service quality. We also witness ongoing bureaucratic obstacles, especially concerning visa regimes, which make travel difficult for tourists. Simplifying administrative processes and visa liberalization can facilitate tourist arrivals. In recent years, special attention

Our favourite and, at the same time, the most challenging event we organized was the first Sarajevo Tourism Summit project. It brought together regional experts in the field of tourism, hospitality, and catering in Sarajevo for the first time. Over 300 participants from the region experienced an unforgettable two-day event in our city, featuring panel discussions, presentations, master show lectures, and more. The success of this event has tasked us with continuing the tradition of organizing it in the following years. How did you first become interested in tourism, and what motivated you to pursue this career?

Tourism, specifically hospitality, is my first “business love,” and I have been actively involved in this field for over 17 years, working JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

in almost every operational position a hotel can have. This job is something you must be born for and live through. The experience gained from working in this industry is invaluable and can only be helpful in further developing a business career.

It is crucial for any foreign investor to carefully research the market and consider factors such as local regulations, the labour market, competition, and consumer needs

In general, there is a need for much greater collaboration among authorities, tourism operators, local communities, and other relevant stakeholders. It is important to develop clear tourism development strategies that identify priorities and measures to enhance the tourism industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina. How does Business Concierge Center Sarajevo assist tourists and businesspeople visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina?

With our service, we aim to provide our clients with a consistently premium and unforgettable experience. We are guided by this principle in our work, and our clients can always expect such service from us. For such services, we always prepare special and customized programs. What are the greatest advantages of doing business in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and how could foreign investors leverage these advantages?

First and foremost, I would highlight the geographical location of Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated in the heart of the Balkans, with a favourable position that allows connectivity with other European markets, facilitating trade and the transportation of goods. Additionally, our country boasts a trained and educated workforce at competitive rates. Foreign investors can leverage this workforce across 17

various sectors, including manufacturing, information technology, and services. When it comes to natural resources, we have significant assets such as forests, mineral resources, and water resources. This can be attractive for investors in sectors like the wood industry, metallurgy, and energy.

In comparison to other countries in the region, Bosnia and Herzegovina has relatively low taxes and fees for businesses, which can reduce operational costs for foreign investors. We also have open free economic zones that offer various incentives, including tax benefits and reduced administrative barriers. Regardless of the advantages, it is crucial for any foreign investor to carefully research the market and consider factors such as local regulations, the labour market, competition, and consumer needs. What do you expect for BCCS for 2024? Can you outline the goals? For the next year, we expect a lot of business activities, especially in the event organization segment.I would like to highlight the second Sarajevo Tourism Summit, scheduled for 23rd and 24th of April2024. Just before that, at the end of February, we are organizing Sarajevo Premium Nights, Winter Edition. There are also plans for a regional sales conference in Zagreb, along with a series of activities to support our clients in realizing their business events, as well as support in the sales and marketing segment. Additionally, we offer consulting services on various projects related to tourism.

MUJA LAW STUDIO

WE GO TO THE CORE OF THE CLIENTS’ NEEDS By Rudina HOXHA The Managing Partner of Muja Law Studio, Mrs. Krenare Muja (Sheqeraku) makes a presentation of her company, a family business operating since 2001. In this exclusive interview with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE, Mrs. Krenare Muja (Sheqeraku) tells how 2023 was for Muja Law Studio, which aspects of its work stood out and why this company excels. “It was precisely that element of personal touch and connection with the clients that we saw was missing and which came very naturally to us that made us think of taking the office to another level,” Mrs. Muja said. In accordance with this, she adds that the success of her company is attributable to the approach the company takes to the clients. “A family business is far from easy. However, a family business can also go to the core of the clients’ needs and solve any problem by doing what a family does best: stick together and find a solution no matter what!,” she states.

LAW

How fruitful was 2023 for Muja Law Studio? Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Rudina let me begin by first thanking you for the opportunity to be part of Trailblazing Magazine. As for 2023, we can say that it was a very fruitful year, albeit full of challenges. Nevertheless, we are happy to say that our portfolio of clients has increased and with that also our workload and obligation to perform, while always keeping unscathed our standard for legal excellency. Apart from the legal consultancy services that are always ongoing for our clients and deal with a great scope of our legislation, as you already might know by now, we also provide legal representation services in court. In this regard, lately we have seen a trend in an increase of employment cases, be those in the private sector or in the public administration. Also, an increase has been observed in cases dealing with contractual relationships and unfulfilled financial obligations. It is safe to say that such trends may continue also in the next 12 months. As for the drivers behind that, there could be a mixture of factors, starting from economic to social ones. During our years of legal practice, we have come to the simple conclusion that it is never easy to understand the factors behind a phenomenon. The best that one can do, is not think only black and white and preferably see the whole picture. Please take us back a bit. How is

the story of Muja Law Firm and what sparked your interest to found this office among others that were already existing?

Well, let’s just say that practicing law in our family is a tradition going by decades now. Our roots go back to 2001 when I decided to open my law practice office in Tirana, Albania. My eldest son, Eno joined me in 2014, and my youngest son Adi entered the practice in 2019. What started in Tirana as a small, familyrun law office has grown and flourished in the community for the last 20 years. The office now consists of various respected and talented lawyers and collaborators who possess outstanding educational and community service backgrounds and have a wealth of experience in representing a diverse client base in various areas of the law. While we have grown over the past 20 years and become recognized as one of Albania’s leading law offices, we remain grounded in the essence of “who” we are and “where” we started. We understand very well the importance of family, hardwork and dedication. It goes without saying that our focus remains always to work hard for the success of our clients and to provide excellence in legal service. In fact, it was precisely that element of personal touch and connection with the clients that we saw was missing and which came very naturally to us that made us think of taking the office to another level.

Mr. Eno Muja 21

JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

LAW

What types of cases does your law firm specialize in?

The firm is full-service and advises clients on all areas of civil, commercial and administrative law. With significant industry expertise, we strive to provide our clients with practical business driven advice that is clear and straight to the point, constantly up to date, not only with the frequent legislative changes in Albania, but also with the developments of international legal practice and domestic case law. The office additionally delivers services to clients in major industries, banks and financial institutions, as well as to companies engaged in insurance, construction, energy and utilities, entertainment and media, mining, oil and gas, professional services, real estate, technology, telecommunications, tourism, transport, infrastructure and consumer goods. In our law firm, we also like to help our clients with mediation services, as an alternative dispute resolution method to their problems. On the other hand, we are also involved as external experts in various projects of the biggest NGOs in Albania. Something which we are very proud of. What do you attribute to your firm’s success and what separates you from other firms?

As I mentioned earlier, clients need to always have a direct and personal approach with their lawyer or lawyers. After all, it is a relationship built on trust and human interactions which cannot be

only dealt with emails and phone calls. One must be present and pay attention to the needs of the clients in order to build a strong and lasting relationship around mutual trust. We believe that this is what we bring to the table. A family business is far from easy. However, a family business can also go to the core of the clients’ needs and solve any problem by doing what a family does best: stick together and find a solution no matter what! Also, having a family business lets you think creatively without having any constraints, which I believe it is very important in our line of work. In the end, creativity and imagination are what drive the world’s progress. Can we talk of your firm’s next expansion plans and strategies at this moment? Do you plan other investments in the future?

Having a family business fades the line between work and family. It doesn’t erase it, but fades it extremely. So, you start seeing your business as part of your family, which in truth it partly is. You see how it grows, you nurture it every day, you see how everyone involved takes care of it and how the investment comes back in various ways and forms. However, having such a mindset also creates a lot of challenges when you think of expanding, because finding the right person to think of your business as a family, is very difficult. Nevertheless, we believe that we have found a working solution to our clients’ expanding needs. We try to collaborate with professionals in specific areas of the legislation. For example, if we have a case dealing with indemnity, we try to

JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

along the way and communicate it to them, be it a legal or tax update, a change in the court’s practice, or even an internal practice that they may implement in the future. We try to be as creative as possible in the solutions and proposals to our clients and explore the best possible way forward together with them.

As for the plans in the near future, at this moment I can only say that we are currently and actively thinking of expanding. We have a few collaboration invitations which we are further exploring and will see what the future has stored for us in those directions.

Muja Law can be reached by email in the email address: contact@mujalaw.com, or at the phone number: +355692828562. On the other hand, anyone interested can also visit our webpage www.mujalaw.com and contact us through there and while they are there, they can also have a look at our library because there’s a lot of content to explore.

Describe how important your customers are to your business. What’s the main change you’ve made in the firm that will benefit clients? How can Muja Law Firm be reached for representation by various new clients?

Our clients are a strong part of our business and play a very important role. If we go forward, we like to do it together with them. A lot of our clients have come to us when they were just beginning and have stayed with us until now. Others have discovered us along the way and we have found ways to grow together. Every seed need soil, water and sun to grow. It is like that with our line of work also. We need to be the driving force to solving our clients’ needs and help them grow by being present and by offering our availability and support whenever the need arises. In the end, this is what family is all about.

Are there any other words of wisdom that you would like to leave with our readers? Rudina, I started this interview by saying that 2023 was a fruitful year, albeit full of challenges. And in fact, we have come to understand that challenges are the one thing never missing for our clients. We are only in the beginning of the 2024 and the challenges have just started for this year. The legislation is constantly being amended and on the other hand new tax laws have been implemented. So, the end of this year looks still far and yet, so close at the same time. What one can do in such race of time, is think carefully how, when and where to place the next step if they are planning on “exploring” Albania’s business landscape and invest here. I strongly believe that we can help your readers with some ideas in doing just that!

We always try to be on alert whenever something that benefits our clients comes Mr. ADI MUJA

Or, if we are dealing with a criminal case, depending on its type, we have our external partners with whom we usually collaborate depending on the case. How would you describe your experience as manager at Cioccolatitaliani in Tirana, Albania? How other previous experiences are helping you in this respect?

Cioccolatitaliani in Tirana represents a new challenge for me which is very important and special at the same time because I do it with a lot of dedication and love. One of the main ingredients I am proud of is pistachio. Its taste is not comparable with any other pistachio. It is the specific formula of pistachio brought by Italy. Here you can try a pistachio crepe, a pistachio pancake, a pistachio waffle or a pistachio brioche. Also, I can mention tiramisu and cheesecake. Not to mention the ice cream which is 100 % from Italy. The pistachio ice cream is the most demanded. All these products are very expensive, but we need to keep the quality.

AMALIA KOKOLI “Lead Albania Gave me the Confidence and Skill to Steer my Career” By Rudina HOXHA Amalia Kokoli, one ofthe 2023 LEAD Albania Fellows, comes to TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE to share her experience with LEAD Albania Program. Actually, working in the Prime Minister’s Office, Kokoli underlines that LEAD Albania Program gives you the possibility to participate in various courses related to leadership, EU integration, diplomatic protocol and business etiquette, rules of public administration, financial policies and management, etc. and “only through this program anyone can learn so much and expand their knowledge in one year.” Out of this Program, she highlights the Emerging Leaders program at Harvard Kennedy School. “I have studied law in Albania and obtained my master’s degree in law in the UK but attending the Emerging Leaders program at Harvard Kennedy School was an exceptional experience,” she says, adding “it helped me develop a different approach to every decision that I have to make in my everyday life.”

Mr. Michael D. Granoff, Chairman of of the Albanian American Development Foundation; Mrs. Amalia Kokoli and Mr. David Wisner, Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana

According to Kokoli, thanks to LEAD Albania Program, “a very healthy young generation has now been created with aspirations to contribute for a healthier standard in the spirit of a liberal democracy.” “I think that being part of the LEAD Albania Program, it is not just a moral, social, cultural and political obligation, but an obligation for the future of our society,” she states.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

What extra did you learn from the academic side of the programme that you hadn’t had before?

Before starting the LEAD Albania Program, I was working as legal advisor in a private financial institution and investing in leadership was an unexplored and challenging field for me. I have studied law in Albania and obtained my master’s degree in law in the UK but attending the Emerging Leaders program at Harvard Kennedy School was an exceptional experience.

Full interview below: LEAD Albania Program is a combination of work in the central government agencies with academic study, participation in activities and others. I’d be interested to get your views on how that has worked out. Do you feel that’s the right kind of mix? Does it give you all you need, do you think? One of the strongest and most compelling asset of LEAD Albania Program is the opportunity that you have to work in the cabinet of the most important public institutions and at the same time improving your knowledge with the numerous academic courses that you attend throughout the year. The academic component of the Program, complements our practical experience by providing 34

theoretical knowledge, frameworks, and a broader understanding of leadership principles. This combination enhances participants’ ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and think critically. I would like to point out that the participation in various activities, workshops, and events such as Lead Alumni, has helped us facilitate networking with professionals from different sectors. Building a diverse network exposes the Lead Albania fellows to various perspectives, ideas, and best practices, enriching their leadership capabilities. Although it might sound difficult to fully commit, LEAD Albania is a unique experience and you need to get the most of it.

JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

I would like to share with you two classes throughout our week at Harvard that helped me develop a different approach to every decision that I have to make in my everyday life. The first one is Professor’s Christopher Robichaud interactive simulation which challenged us to confront and diagnose a crisis as well as develop cooperative strategies to advance our vision while also emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations in leadership roles and decision-making. Whereas the second class that I feel delighted to have attended was Professor’s Timothy O’Brian “The ability to Change” where in less than 2 hours we understood what really makes us afraid to change in order to improve ourself and why it is so important to overcome such a challenge. One of the many great benefits for LEAD Albania Program fellows is the participation of the fellows at Harvard Kennedy School programs, study visits to EU Institutions or leadership development training,` and of course professors from elsewhere come in. So, do you think that you and the other LEAD

Fellows get a very varied range of expertise? What else would you like to have as part of this program?

Leadership programs cultivate a mindset of continuous learning. The habits of seeking knowledge, staying informed about industry trends, and being open to new ideas can become ingrained in your approach to life. Therefore, LEAD Albania Program gives you the possibility to participate in various courses related to leadership, EU integration, diplomatic protocol and business etiquette, rules of public administration, financial policies and management, etc. and only through this program anyone can learn so much and expand their knowledge in one year. What I would personally recommend is to be provided with a more practical insight from the people working in executive positions in important public institutions, such as members of the cabinets, in order to share their personal experience and provide us with valuable advices that we may need in order to fully adapt to their environment. In terms of the workloads that come out of the academic side of the programme, are they manageable, given all the other aspects of the program that you’ve got to keep on top of?

JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

I would like to mention that I had the chance to be part of the LEAD Albania Program at a very challenging stage of my life. Becoming a mother made me reflect on what I had managed to do in my life and if it was the time I could provide my qualifications in the public sector in order to have a positive impact for the society and also contribute for a better future for my son. It was a long battle with myself but now I am confident that I have made the right decision. Being part of LEAD Albania Program can be demanding but it is also designed to be challenging and yet manageable. Personal growth is a lifelong journey and considering that in just one year you have the chance to learn from different fields not only from the professors but also from the other LEAD Albania fellows, I think that everybody can adapt and manage to find a work-life balance. So what is your role now? How has this Program impacted your life and work?

Now that the LEAD Albania Program has ended, I continue working at the Prime Minister’s office, specifically as a coordinator

at the management office of the Secretary General of the Council of Ministers. This program has given me the privilege to know and work with outstanding colleagues who didn’t hesitate to help me and made me part of their team while also motivating me to improve myself. As I acquire new knowledge and skills, I have increased confidence in my ability to lead and make impactful decisions not only in my professional but also in my personal life. This confidence has extended in various aspects of my life, contributing to a positive self-image. This experience has provided me a platform for networking with

sincerity of the landscape and to a healthy environment. Reading books whenever I am on my own, is the one of the most precious moments of my day where I fill up and live. Moreover, capturing moments through photography also allows me to explore my creative side, appreciate the beauty around me and document my life. To sum up, I think that being part of the LEAD Albania Program, it is not just a moral, social, cultural and political obligation, but an obligation for the future of our society. Thanks to this program, a very healthy young generation has now been created with aspirations to contribute for a healthier standard in the spirit of a liberal democracy.

Tell us more about yourself, your hobbies and your expectations from LEAD Albania Program.

I grew up in a family of successful lawyers and artists with contributions in the visual and cinematographic arts. This amalgam has made me adoptable in today’s society in order to be as openminded as possible in the perception and acceptance of cultural, social and political dialectics. Therefore, I also see my professional development as inseparable from activities that can also be called hobbies, such as hiking and travelling, thus making me closer to the diversity and

professionals from different fields and building a strong professional network has helped me face and adapt to diverse perspectives. Moreover, taking responsibilities for the tasks set forth by the public administration system as well as performing in accordance with the requirements set forth by the challenges of the time, is a valuable asset that this program made me aware of.

What was the most surprising aspect and the most helpful part you remember about the LEAD Albania Program?

View from the opening ceremony of LEAD ALBANIA PROGRAM 2019-2020

What is the story of your career so far? Can you describe the nature of your work at present? I have a long career in academia as a lecturer at the European University of Tirana, a career that started almost 14 years ago. Since October 2022, I have been serving as the Head of the Social Applied Sciences Department at the Faculty of Law, Political Sciences and International Relations, The European University of Tirana. I also continue to contribute as a Lecturer, a position I’ve held since November 2020, where I teach courses in Project Management & Evaluation, Theories of Political Behaviour, Research Methods in Social Sciences, and Political Parties and Electoral Systems at the Master’s and Bachelor’s levels. My educational background includes a Doctorate in Political Science from The European University of Tirana, a Master of 40

Arts in European Politics from the University of Sussex, UK, and a BA in Political Sciences from The European University of Tirana. My research contributions are substantial, with publications in areas like political party and electoral systems, political system during communism in Albania, intra-party democracy, and public policy, among others. I have also been an active participant in academic conferences, presenting papers on a variety of political science topics. Why did you choose the LEAD Albania Program in 2019-2020 and was there any memory that stood out as formative in your decision?

As an academic deeply entrenched in the study and teaching of political sciences, my career at the European University of Tirana was marked by a profound dedication JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

to imparting knowledge and fostering critical thinking. However, the confines of theoretical frameworks and classroom discussions often sparked a yearning for a more tangible engagement with the gears of policy-making and governance. It was this inner drive to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical policy execution that guided my decision to apply for the LEAD Albania Program in 2019-2020. The LEAD Albania Program presented itself not just as an opportunity but as a strategic avenue to transition from theoretical discourse to practical involvement in the nation’s governance. My decision to apply was rooted in a clear understanding of the program’s potential to provide an immersive experience in the inner workings of the government. The prospect of being placed in a senior position within crucial government institutions like the Prime 41

Participating in the LEAD Albania Program during a period marked by the earthquake and the subsequent global pandemic, provided me with profound insights and surprising revelations about the resilience and adaptability of government operations. The most surprising aspect for me was witnessing firsthand the unwavering commitment and continuity of government work, even amidst crisis. The day after the earthquake shook our nation, I found myself coordinating a project via email, a clear testament to the relentless spirit and dedication of public service. This experience shattered my preconceived notions about governmental operations during crises, revealing a layer of steadfastness and urgency that typically operates behind the scenes.Simultaneously, the most helpful part of the LEAD Albania Program was the opportunity to observe and

Can you describe an instance or example when you used skills or lessons learned from the LEAD Program Albania within your new role?

The LEAD Program Albania, through its meticulously structured educational components and practical experiences, equipped me with invaluable insights and skills, significantly enhancing my professional trajectory. One notable instance where the lessons learned from the program profoundly influenced my new role was in my capacity as an educator and leader within the European University of Tirana (EUT).In my lectures, I was able to transcend the traditional theoretical frameworks by integrating firsthand experiences and real-life examples gleaned during my time with the LEAD Program. This enriched the academic discourse significantly, bridging the gap between textbook theories and the practical intricacies of governance and public policy. The ability to contextualize and bring to life the theories discussed in class not only engaged my students more deeply but also fostered a more profound understanding of the subject matter. The swift transition to an online work environment was not just about adapting to a ‘new normal’ but was a demonstration of robust crisis management and agility in policy implementation. This period was particularly enlightening as it highlighted the critical importance of flexibility, quick decision-making, and effective communication within government structures to ensure uninterrupted service to the public. These experiences were invaluable as they not only broadened my understanding of the complexities involved in governance during crises but also instilled in me a profound respect for the dynamic nature of public service. The LEAD Albania Program, therefore, was not just an educational journey but a real-time exposure to the resilience and adaptability that underpin effective governance, lessons that I will carry forward in my professional journey.

These programs offered me a comprehensive understanding of what leadership entails, the various styles and strategies, and the nuances of effective leadership in practice. This knowledge was pivotal as I assumed a leadership role within EUT. It enabled me to navigate the complexities of academic leadership fostering an environment conducive to

collaboration, innovation, and collective growth. What were the key values that the LEAD Albania Program encapsulated for you as an ex-LEAD Fellow? For me, as an ex-LEAD Fellow, the LEAD Albania Program encapsulated key values of resilience, adaptability, and dedication to public service. It underscored the importance of continuous learning and effective leadership, particularly in times of crisis, and highlighted the significance of bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application to drive meaningful change in governance and policy-making.

TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Përparim Rama, the mayor of Prishtina City, Kosovo. He discusses his thoughts on the city’s success, challenges they have faced, and main priorities the city will have to go forward. Working in a large administrative environment such as the Municipality of Prishtina, with more than 4700 employees, the mayor says that “the dynamics of management and decision making become intricate and interesting.” planner has provided me with solid grounds to understand, conceptualize and tackle multidimensional city issues. My background therefore has a direct impact on the strategy and decisions related to the city’s future, and especially related to the topics close to mind and heart such as the environment, and urban planning and the impact it has on our daily lives and wellbeing. Our work on the municipal development plan envisages rural development based on circular economy, agrotourism and mountain tourism. Prishtina is blessed with amazing nature, which has largely been under-utilized and in some cases wrongly utilized. We are ensuring that the future growth encourages nature tourism and maximizes the potential of the rural areas, by also providing jobs for locals and creating new opportunities for tourism.

The 48-year-old Kosovo Albanian architect and urban planner took the post of the mayor in 2020. At the age of 16, he moved to London where he studied for architecture and excelled in the field. A winner of many international awards, Perparim Rama is intending to transform Prishtina into a future gem. “Prishtina is blessed with amazing nature, which has largely been underutilized and in some cases wrongly utilized. What are you currently fascinated by and how is it feeding into your work?

What are your priorities when it comes to the urbanization plan of Prishtina City? Can you share some of your approaches in terms of architecture & design and future plans for the city?

Yes, absolutely! I have always presented the citizen as the most important parameter in the city. Our focus is based on creating safe and democratic public spaces. In a city that is largely chaotic in terms of traffic and transportation, we need to set our priorities right. We have developed a clear strategy where citizens come first, urban transport second, and cars third, and this is exactly what we are doing. We have made some 48

bold decisions, such as closing one of the main central roads and turning it into a city boulevard. We are redefining the city center and its hierarchy. We are transforming the inner ring road into a one-way system, which will ensure a faster and more secure public transport, while also benefiting emergency services, police and fire brigade. We have put in place a radical plan for rural development whereby we are banning the use of any materials that emit Co2. There will be no concrete buildings in the future in the rural areas. The new buildings will consist of reusable and environmentally friendly materials such as wood and Cross Laminated Timber. We are pushing forward the strategy for tourism in the rural areas. In parallel, in urban areas we are creating new recreational parks and public squares, designing more green zones while changing the material palette in order to create areas more resilient to flooding and future climatic changes as a result of global warming. We are committed to achieve all Sustainable Development goals as set by United Nation, by 2030. Culture and sports are an important factor for our city’s development, and growth. New JP TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE

Given the diversity of Kosovo landscapes, have you thought to focus on environmental architecture mostly?

As mentioned above the rural development will be predominantly and focused on environmental architecture based in circular economy and materials that can be recycled and are non C02 producing emissions. We have organized several international competitions whereby we are encouraging the use of CLT materials, and it is already showing results. Kosova has several companies that are now producing wood- based solutions for housing and construction industry, and therefore it will not be an issue to switch into these new, environmentally friendly methods of construction.

and positive experiences. More than a thousand journalists from all over the world visited Prishtina, and wrote positively about their experiences. There were more than 800 articles globally on main magazines which showcased our young, multilingual, welcoming, entrepreneurial spirit of our artists, and our people. With so many beautiful and unexpected encounters, the word has travelled around the world that Prishtina is worth visiting! We have a registered increase of tourist by 35% this year in relation to last year. What changes have you seen in the architecture and interior design industries over the last years?

In recent years, the architecture and interior design industries have undergone significant changes; interior design trends have evolved over time, with each decade having its own unique style. In addition, the architecture industry has become more diverse than ever before, with inclusivity becoming a significant factor in design. Also, new technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics will allow architects to design with meaning while meeting

projects for the city such as the Museum and a Concert Hall, as well as The Art and Technology centers in the former Brick Factory and a pop-up tech center in the Youth Palace are already designed and will be entering the construction phase. modern demands. Artificial intelligence (AI) is already having a significant impact on the architecture and interior design industries. AI tools have the potential to streamline workflows, predict design decisions, foster creativity, and provide fresh perspectives within the expansive realm of architecture, AI-powered design tools can help architects create more efficient and sustainable buildings. Additionally, virtual and augmented reality technologies can help clients visualize designs before they are built. In interior design, AI is transforming the industry through personalized design recommendations, predictive analytics, and streamlined communication and project management. As AI advances, we can expect even more innovative and transformative applications in interior design. However, it’s important to understand that AI is not a replacement for human creativity and expertise. Rather, it should be understood and used as a tool that can help architects and designers work more efficiently and effectively. AI can help designers generate new ideas and explore new possibilities, but it cannot replace the human touch that is essential to creating truly unique and inspiring designs capable of taking into account the human emotion and experience. Looking ahead, it will be exciting to see how AI continues to shape the architecture and interior design industries in the future! We understand the power of AI and are working within all our departments to see how we can create platforms to allow a smooth transition from current classic style public services to AI aided and streamlined processes. In other words, I am thoroughly excited about the future.
