College Boasts Record-Breaking Year for Applicants

In 2014, more than 50 individuals applied

for certificate-based scholarships – the most in the history of the College of Continuing and Professional Education. CCPE’s Scholarship Night celebration saw dozens of students receive scholarships for programs such as Web Design, Project Management, Social Media Marketing, Gerontology, Meeting & Event Management and Paralegal. Nearly 100 people attended the 3rd annual event which awarded more than $75,000 to adult learners. “Our purpose is to help those to achieve their goals,” said Barbara Calhoun, dean of the college. “The greatest gift anyone can ever give is the gift of education. It opens the doors to opportunity which paves the way to more opportunities.” A substantial portion of the funding distributed was a direct result of the 2013 award-winning Casino Night Scholarship Fundraiser. The event raised nearly $30,000 for the Barbara S. Calhoun Scholarship Fund.

“These events represent the core of what we do,” Calhoun continued. “We strive to empower others by spreading our mission of lifelong learning.” One of the beneficiaries, Jana Jenkins, was a proud recipient of a Project Management Scholarship. She said, “I know getting this certification will further my career, opening up opportunities for positions I may not have been qualified for. It will allow me to apply to a wider range of positions and will allow me to be competitive in the job market. Offering scholarships for these types of classes allows seasoned professionals to continue their education and be productive in the workforce.” Further scholarship information can be found on our website ccpe.kennesaw.edu/scholarships. Applications for 2015 will be posted in April.

At 17, Darrell Vaughan enlisted

in the National Guard. At 48, he retired as a Major in the Army and enrolled in KSU’s Project Management Certificate program. Today, as the owner of the telecommunications consulting firm Schooley Mitchell of Kennesaw, Vaughan said the knowledge he received will be invaluable as he navigates his new journey. “For the past 14 years, I have been a mission planner for the Army, a job closely related to project management,” Vaughan said. “The project management program has validated my military experiences and helped me apply them to the civilian sector.” Vaughan learned about the project management course at a Recruit Military Job Fair in Atlanta and was able to take advantage of VA Education Benefits to enroll. The College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) has nearly 30 programs where Post9/11 veterans can apply this funding. Vaughan said, “KSU is a quality institution. The continuing education staff was incredibly helpful

working with the Veteran’s Administration to coordinate the paperwork I needed to apply my GI Bill benefits.” With a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees under his belt, Vaughan said returning to the classroom felt fairly natural to him. “Career and family commitments did pose a unique challenge this time, though, requiring some inventive scheduling to maintain balance,” he said. “Personally, I was also challenged to re-establish my study habits, and continue to maintain them as I prepare for the (Project Management Professional certification) exam.” Project integration and control, time and cost management, and communication and quality management are among the skill sets taught in the project management course. Kristy Mobley, CCPE program manager, said, “Our instructors, Pete Schestopol and Francine Warner, have over 50 years of combined experience in national and international project management. Our students benefit from having these pros in the classroom. Furthermore, we are a Project Management Institute Registered Education Provider, so the education our students receive is truly top of the line.” “The material was challenging, but I learned a lot and was very pleased with the overall experience,” Vaughan said. “Pete and Fran genuinely care about their students and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure they understand the material. They are continuously striving to improve the program.” As a new business owner, Vaughan said he is focusing on expanding his client base and building his brand. His company offers a broad range of services, including analysis of existing and future merchant service needs and assessment of best alternatives and implementation of cost-effective solutions. Vaughan said the course taught him the language of business, something that has been “invaluable.” He added, “I look forward to applying everything I have learned in this course to my new business and clients.”

ARTS, HISTORY & SCIENCE Painted Vacations in Water Media

Paint your vacation photos or personal sketches in watercolor or acrylic. Students will create paintings inspired by their vacation and/or travel photos, personal photographs or sketches. Instructor will give demos and critiques during the first 30-45 minutes of class. Returning students will build on the skills developed in previous sessions. Do not buy new supplies. We will work with what you have initially, then assess if anything additional is needed. $139, 24 Hours K. Beginning Watercolor

This beginning watercolor class will teach the basics: supplies, preparing the paper, creating value studies, painting washes, painting on wet and dry paper, mixing colors and techniques for saving the white of the paper. Instructor will complete class demonstrations and students will complete the exercises the first 6 weeks. In remaining classes, students will paint their own watercolors from a class still life or their own reference photographs. Returning students will build on the skills learned in previous session. $119, 20 Hours K. Rennell Forbes, professional artist, Instructor 1/12/2015-3/9/2015 (Omit 1/19) 8 Session(s), M 6:00 to 8:30PM Course# 153SFNA2210A

Interpretive Watercolor

Students will explore the innate ability of all to create art from life using the natural qualities of watercolor. We will start each painting from an abstract wet-inwet base. Styles to be explored range from realistic to semiabstract to abstract. Instructor will demonstrate at the beginning of every class and students will apply

lessons immediately following the demonstration. Each student will subsequently receive personal instruction and feedback during the remaining class time. Topics include: color theory and palette set-up, methods of paint application compositional approaches, negative painting, sources of inspiration, and the possibilities of “play.” Students may work from their own photographs, sketchbooks, imaginations and/or from material provided by instructor. All levels are welcome, but some prior experience with the medium of watercolor would be helpful. $179, 30 Hours E. Carr, professional artist, Instructor 1/15/2015-3/19/2015 10 Session(s), Th 1:30 to 4:30PM Course# 153SFNA2284A

Watercolor with Pen & Ink

Explore the graphic possibilities of combining watercolor with expressive line in pen and ink. You don’t have to be a perfectionist to get beautiful and intriguing results with these simple tools and techniques. Often a less-thanappealing watercolor can become a successful work of art just by adding some interesting or defining lines and, conversely, a pen and ink drawing can be enhanced with color. Come have fun experimenting with these versatile mediums under the tutelage of a professional artist and signature member of The Georgia Watercolor Society and Watercolor Society of Alabama. Supply list will be emailed prior to class beginning. $179, 30 Hours E. Carr, professional artist, Instructor 1/15/2015-3/19/2015 10 Session(s), Th 9:30AM to 12:30PM Course# 153SFNA2235A

Painting Abstractly

Discover the joys of abstract painting with different class exercises each week. Paint in any medium (except pastels). Each exercise will take 1-2 weeks. Bring your own supplies you currently

use and supports (paper, canvas, panels – whatever you normally paint upon). Must be proficient in the medium you will use, this is not a “how to use the medium” class but rather a “how to create abstractly” class. $139, 24 Hours K. Rennell Forbes, professional artist, Instructor 1/21/2015-3/11/2015 8 Session(s), W 10:00AM to 1:00PM Course# 153SFNA2242B

Pencil, Pen & Ink Drawing Beginning Believe it or not, everyone can learn to draw! Whether your doodle results in stick figures, or you want to advance your hobby in water color or oil for more realism, this class will help the beginner “draw what you see” through patient, expert guidance and practiced technique. Bring a #2 pencil to the first class. Additional supplies (pencils, eraser, and sketchbook) will be discussed and recommended to suit your interest at the first class. Basic supplies will not exceed $10-$15. $119, 20 Hours W. Needs, Instructor 1/13/2015-3/3/2015 8 Session(s), Tu 1:00 to 3:30PM Course# 153SFNA2260B
