college can be a bit of a mouthful. We offer a plethora of opportunities and services. If you think about it, our name might not be long enough! But, what does our name really mean? Here’s a quick guide: • In 2010, we received the official designation of college – one of 13 that comprise this university • We offer continuing education programs for personal development or professional advancement • Our goal is to increase your knowledge and empower you through education The College of Continuing and Professional Education – or CCPE – continues to serve a vast audience and a variety of needs. We are not only interested in where you come from but also incredibly invested in where you want to land. Take Shanise Hall, our featured student, for example. She served in the Air Force for a number of years and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Hall took on a variety of roles in management, fitness and personnel. She completed her service and earned an accounting degree. CCPE became part of her journey when she enrolled in our Bookkeeper Professional Certificate program. She continues to thrive professionally and is determined to leave an incredible footprint in her community. She shares her story on Page 44. What can CCPE do for you? If you are seeking career fulfillment, log on to one of our many free webinars (Page 2) to explore our different certificate programs. If you are seeking a creative outlet, our Personal programs (Page 51) will likely suit your needs. Are you 50+ and looking to refresh some skills, meet new people, travel and/or explore history and literature? Our OLLI program (Page 58) has this and then some. Looking for a space to host a conference? We’ve got a full team to carry this out for you. I could write a book about everything our college has to offer, but this catalog can definitely suffice. Thank you for reading, and I wish you the best in your journey with CCPE.

CCPE PARTNER SPECIAL SECTION

DIGITAL BADGES The Future Of Learning Is Here!

As knowledge work dominates our economy, we need to find better and faster ways to learn. Today’s employees, who are typically overwhelmed at work, want flexibility in where and how they learn. And, according to research conducted by the Bersin Group at Deloitte, employees are taking more control over their own development. That is why U.S. News and World Report named digital badges as the #1 trend to watch in 2017.

What is a digital badge? A digital badge is a new credential that a person earns when they complete an online educational program. The digital badge movement was started by the MacArthur Foundation who wanted to inspire universities and other organizations to create digital badge programs that improve learning outcomes for students and adults. A digital badge credential validates and communicates an individual’s skills and achievements to the rest of the world. Digital badge credentials are most often displayed in the accomplishments section of a person’s LinkedIn Profile and on other social media outlets. The digital badge can be validated by a potential employer with just a click. Goodbye paper certificates. Hello digital credentialing! Why are digital badge programs popular? Digital badge programs at the Coles College of Business, where I work, are popular because they are mobile-learning programs that use the best

practices in gamification, micro-learning and collaborative application. The College’s most popular digital badge programs are in the areas of account management, business innovation and leadership excellence. The digital badge is valued because the program is rigorous and involves both learning and doing. Digital badges are popular with employers because the employee has to demonstrate realworld application of the concepts and skills being “learned.” For example, the Coles College teamed up with WellStar Health System to develop a Digital Badge in Leadership Excellence— Healthcare. So far 89 healthcare professionals have graduated from the program titled the WellStar Leadership Academy. The program is already having a significant positive impact on both the individuals and the organization. What’s the difference between a digital badge and a certificate? The digital badge credential is designed to

complement, not replace, traditional educational degrees, certifications or certificates. However, for those individuals who don’t have the time or budget to pursue a traditional degree or certification, the digital badge mobile-learning program and digital badge micro-credential may be their best – and maybe only – alternative. A digital badge credential is earned when you complete a short educational program that is, more often than not, 100% online. A universityvalidated certificate or certification is typically earned when you also spend face-to-face time with the instructors either at a college campus or a company’s training center. For most individuals, it’s not an either/or decision. They often complete both digital badge programs and certificate programs to deepen their knowledge and enhance their marketability.

Building digital badge programs is a team sport! Universities that truly want to innovate, and meet the needs of today’s modern learner, have to team up with others. Innovation in higher education is not an individual sport, it’s a team sport! At the Coles College of Business we have partnered with Jubi who provides an award-winning, gamified mobile-learning platform; Leadercast who provides thought-provoking videos featuring leadership experts from around the world; and the studio and digital media wizards at Kennesaw State University’s Technology Enhanced Learning division who help our faculty write scripts and deliver engaging online content. The conversations that we’ve had in this class, with [many different perspectives]; what I thought was my opinion on a certain topic is now very different … on so many topics, from living well to quality of life to the death and dying process – every part of gerontology.

Tell us a little more about your background. I have worked with older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia for the past 10 years. I recently started my own business and wanted to broaden my knowledge to better serve individuals and the community at large. I have learned from others in the same field. Previously, I was a national director for a large memory care company. I decided that I wanted to be representing families instead of representing the actual businesses themselves. I wanted to be an advocate for families. I have done real estate before and in real estate, you get a buyer’s agent when you are looking for different options. We married those two concepts together: being an agent that represents families for Alzheimer’s and dementia care, guiding them on what to do next in [what can be] a very scary time. What are the most important things you learned in our Gerontology course? I have learned to look at aging in a different light and talk about it from a different perspective. Dr. Lois Ricci has connected us with so many resources. Our web is so much bigger now. She has taught us to listen to not only the people we are providing care for but also our peers. We all have something to contribute; different perspectives. Embracing the people has been key.

How has the class helped you in your business? In conjunction with this class, my wife and I started our own business called the Dementia Guide. We assist families dealing with the crisis of Alzheimer’s and dementia and connect them to helpful resources. This could come in the form of in-home care, assisted living or memory care or just learning how to navigate if somebody needs legal resources – or if they need to have information about what Alzheimer’s and dementia are. This class has been invaluable with this because we have legal experts and occupational therapists in the class; individuals who are in various aspects of corporate leadership, nurse aides, and individuals dealing with their own journey volunteering. They all bring different perspectives. I see our class as a number of resources that are there for potential clients, but Dr. Ricci has also brought in so many resources for us that are available in Georgia that I would not have known or had a chance to meet prior to this class.

Chicken Lettuce Wraps and Homemade Fettucine with Spinach, Sausage and Red Pepper Sauces

Stomachs were full and palates were pleased during the Mystery Basket challenge in KSU’s Culinary Apprenticeship course. This timed test of skills showcased future chefs’ ability to be innovative – all while racing the clock. One of our students shares their recipe with you to try at home. CHICKEN LETTUCE WRAPS: • 1 pound ground chicken • 1 Romaine head of lettuce • 1 onion, chopped • 2 cloves of minced garlic • 1 thinly cut green bell pepper • 1 thinly cut red bell pepper • 1 tsp salt and pepper (to taste) • 1 tbsp oil (halved) 1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. 2. Add ground chicken in a skillet and cook until brown. 3. In another skillet, heat remaining oil. 4. Add onion and cook until tender, then add garlic. 5. Stir in chicken and cook for 7 to 10 minutes. 6. Add bell peppers, salt and black pepper (to taste). 7. Serve on a crispy lettuce wrap. Add red pepper sauce (optional – see recipe below). RED PEPPER SAUCE: • Red peppers • Onions 1. Roast peppers in oven or on grill until the skin turns dark. 2. Peel and pour peppers into a blender. Blend to a smooth paste. 3. Sauté onions until translucent. 4. Add sauce into onion and stir. 5. Season to taste. SPINACH & SAUSAGE SAUCE: • 1 roll of Tennessee Pride mild ground sausage • 1 bag of pre-washed spinach • 1 onion chopped • 2 cloves of minced garlic • 1 thinly cut red bell pepper • 1 thinly cut green bell pepper • 3 tomatoes • 1 tsp ground basil • 1 tsp ground oregano • 1 tsp salt and pepper to taste 1. Brown sausage in a skillet. 2. Sauté 1 chopped onion and 2 cloves of minced garlic in a different skillet. 3. Add browned sausage and cook for about three minutes. 4. Add green and red bell peppers, then ground basil, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper (to taste). 5. Add spinach and tomatoes.

FETTUCINE: • 1 egg, beaten • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup all-purpose flour 1. In a medium sized bowl, combine flour and salt. 2. Make a well in the flour, add the slightly beaten egg, and mix to form a stiff dough. 3. Slightly rub oil all over dough. Wrap dough in a cling wrap and set aside while you make the two sauces (Spinach and Sausage and Red Pepper). 4. On a lightly floured surface, knead dough for about 3 to 4 minutes. 5. Use either a rolling pin or pasta-rolling machine to roll dough out to desired thinness. 6. Cut into strips. 7. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Stir in freshly made pasta. 8. Add 1 teaspoon of salt. Cook pasta until it’s al dente (about 4 to 5 minutes). Freshly made pasta takes less time to cook. 9. Serve pasta with a scoop of both sauces. 10. Top with Parmesan. (optional)

Keys for a

Successful Résumé As you explore furthering your education, think about your résumé as well. If you are searching for a job, or already have one, it is always wise to have your résumé current – just in case an opportunity may arise. Michael Dutcher, assistant director of campus engagement for KSU’s Department of Career Planning and Development, provides several helpful tips and advice on how to construct the best résumé to land that interview.

CHRONOLOGICAL RÉSUMÉ Using this résumé format is best for standard positions. Job posting says the ideal candidate is experienced in the field. Company culture leans toward traditional. This format is preferred by hiring managers and recruiters. Also key: Develop strong bulleted lists by listing your most relevant achievements. TARGETED RÉSUMÉ In today’s market, a résumé should be as targeted as possible, so you will want to highlight different accomplishments and skills used within a prior job depending on where you are sending your résumé. Pay attention to what key skills or experience the job description asks for in the post you are responding to. This may mean that every time you apply for a position, you will need to review your résumé and make adjustments. Always consider your audience and what they will be looking for on your résumé.

WHAT EMPLOYERS WANT Often, employers are more interested in transferable skills than they are in highly technical, field-specific skills. This is because most employers are looking for teachable candidates, who can easily fit into their company culture. You might find some of these phrases or words (or any number of specific “soft skills”) listed in the job postings you are applying to: • Analytical • Strong communication • Innovative/problem solver skills • Motivated and flexible • Initiative • Vocational skills (skills • Leadership specific to your industry) • Teamwork • Ability to handle conflict If you have the skills listed above, it is not enough simply to list them under a skills section. They need to be demonstrated in your strong bullet points by showing the reader an example of a time you excelled in a role by using strong communication or leadership skills.

SECURITY MANAGEMENT An Insider’s Perspective

Tripp Mitchell, a state certified security instructor

with more than 20 years of relevant experience, leads the Security Management Professional Certificate course at CCPE. Students will gain knowledge on several facets of the security industry and exposure to different topics within the field. Tripp shares more here:

Give us a brief overview of the new program. The Security Management certificate program will develop students who want to pursue a career in the corporate security field. It encompasses a variety of topics ranging from legal aspects of security, professional standards, the scope of private security as well as liability and emergency management. Students can expect to learn the role security plays in today’s business environment. With a focus on professionalism and career potential, this course sets the student up for a career in working within the dynamic world of private security. One of the biggest benefits is that the student is cross trained on not only security management topics but the course meets and exceeds the minimum training requirement set forth by the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies. This means upon completion, not only do you have a high standard of learning from a professional institution, but the course meets all state requirements for training through the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. Why is offering this so important? Studies have shown that security personnel outnumber law enforcement presence at a ratio of 5-to-1. Security management is a career choice with job potential and upward mobility. By offering this course, we can enhance the learning opportunity and growth potential for those entering or already in the field. In our time of increased crime, decreased government services and client-based safety, the world of security will open up a greater opportunity and wider market for professional-trained employees.

Who is the ideal student? • Criminal justice majors • Entrepreneurs looking to start a security company • Entry-level security officers looking for career development and promotion • Retired police and law enforcement officers looking to continue to work in the field as a second career choice • Loss prevention and asset protection associates • In-house corporate security personnel looking to increase their knowledge base • Emergency managers looking to increase their knowledge base • Those interested in the field of criminal justice but have no interest in being a law enforcement officer • Retired military looking for a great re-entry opportunity What are some of the most prominent jobs that earning this certificate can lead to? • Security specialist • Asset protection • Security manager/ associate supervisor • Hotel security manager • Security director • Hospital security • Chief security officer manager • Loss prevention agent • Security agency owner Where do you see the future of this profession heading? The future is wide open for security professionals. The reduction in government services to the public coupled with the need to protect proprietary assets will only increase over time. Security is a noble profession in which there is a lot of upward mobility and diverse opportunities.

BUILDING BLOCKS AutoCAD & Construction Project Management

A diverse skills set can provide a competitive edge in your job hunt. For example, AutoCAD and Construction Project Management knowledge could be your catalyst to gaining employment or even entrepreneurship! CPM instructor Sam Delgado provides more insight into these career fields and their complementary nature.

How is AutoCAD used in CPM? Why is it important? AutoCAD-based applications can be used in a type of hybrid BIM design, where coordination of drawings may be facilitated by using AutoCAD files in lieu of other applications. Having been in the industry and now teaching construction management, I cannot imagine a world that is exclusively understood in 3D. There are many instances, for example, when placing a 3D model on top of a 2D rendering elucidates relationships that could be possibly missed if a model alone was involved. Although construction managers are not designers, they must be thoroughly familiar with interpreting building architecture. 3D models are a wonderful way to get past the usual difficulty of imagining 2D information in a 3D format, but construction managers will still need to be proficient in communicating with other disciplines and their trades in 2D. Would you recommend a student to take AutoCAD before taking CPM? AutoCAD knowledge would certainly be a welcomed skill in CPM. From my perspective, in today’s world there is an increasing interfacing taking place between design, construction and management. Technology has created new roles within CPM. Progressive construction companies now have a Virtual Design

38

and Construction division. Nothing is really left out of the coordination and collaboration effort as far as technology is concerned because gaining a competitive edge in the market requires a comprehensive ability to integrate tools in customized ways in order to meet management challenges on a project-by-project basis. How important is earning a certificate in each of these programs as it relates to the job market/industry? Certification in AutoCAD and CPM provides students with a viable way of learning new skills that are in demand in an efficient and quick manner. Market demands in the construction field are high, particularly given the fact that the Baby Boomer generation is transitioning out of the market and there is a growing vacuum of talent to fulfill key positions. This diminishing inventory of knowledgeable workers creates attractive opportunities for students that are making a wise investment in their future by gaining new knowledge and developing relevant skills. Moreover, students who are involved in lifelong learning are making themselves more flexible and adaptable to changing market conditions, thereby being consistently more marketable candidates as current roles become more demanding or new roles become available.

Two weeks changed Shanise

Hall’s career trajectory – and now she is more than ready to conquer her future endeavors. Her professional repertoire has taken her across the globe and back. Now, she looks forward to entrepreneurship and giving back – all with her Bookkeeper Professional certificate in tow. Hall served in the Air Force from 2005-13. She was assigned to Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico and worked in Force Support (which includes food, fitness, mortuary and personnel). She was also deployed to Baghdad in 2007 and eventually promoted to Staff Sergeant. Of her experience, she said, “It was the best decision I ever made for my life. [It] taught me discipline, hard work and self-control.” College was next on her list. While working on her accounting degree from Strayer University, Hall attended a 2-week bookkeeping course at Sweetwater Mission in Austell in 2016. She said, “After the course, I realized I wanted to take a course with more detail. At the time, my awesome mother was enrolling in the KSU ESOL program and brought me the KSU continuing education catalog. She mentioned the bookkeeping course, and the rest is history!” Hall completed her degree program in May 2017 and used her VA Education Benefits to enroll

The reward from the experience and knowledge gained is priceless. Shanise Hall, Bookkeeper Professional graduate in the Bookkeeper Professional certificate program that August. She said they learned a myriad of skills such as setting up a company from scratch, creating

journal entries, conducting bank reconciliations, and adding vendors, services and products. The program can also assist in preparing students for the Certified Bookkeeper designation from American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. The class was a great fit, and Hall said instructor Tymone Green, MBA, was instrumental in her success. “He was absolutely amazing,” Hall said. “He explained every step in great detail which made homework and projects much easier. The class was a very positive atmosphere and instructor Green encouraged us to help each other.” The course also helped Hall with her next career move. She was hired by First Key Homes as a Cash Management Analyst. The responsibilities of the job align with topics covered in the Bookkeeper course. “I approve a high volume of cash transfers and wire requests; communicate with internal and external customers to address and resolve problems, special requests, and/or discrepancy situations; and assist the Sr. Treasurer with any special projects and complete bank reconciliations daily,” she said. “The Bookkeeper course helped in my role by teaching me how to read various financial statements and properly analyze the information.” Success continues to be on the horizon for Hall. Her education and professional experiences are the driving force behind her next set of ambitions. “My ultimate career goal is to start my own bookkeeping company that specializes in small businesses,” she said. “Once my company is established and excelling, I would also like to start a non-profit Boys & Girls Club.” For anyone considering the Bookkeeper Certificate, Hall said, “Do it! The reward from the experience and knowledge gained is priceless.”

ETHICAL HACKING Meenaxi Dave has served as the instructor for the Ethical Hacker

certificate program since its launch in 2017. Dave is an experienced information security educator with proven success developing, delivering and evaluating IT security-training programs for college level students. As a recognized technology leader, she has served on multiple nonprofit boards and as a judge for SkillsUSA computer contest. Her professional certifications include CISSP, CEH, CompTIA Security+, Network+ and Linux+. In light of recent hacks – local and national – we connected with Dave for a Q&A which points out key differences between ethical hacking and non-ethical hacking and the importance of the Certified Ethical Hacker certification.

What is an ethical hacker? Ethical hacking and ethical hacker are terms that are used interchangeably. These people are experts in the networking/computer field and use their knowledge to systematically attack the system with the permission from the owner of the network. Their goal is to find the vulnerability in the system before the malicious attacker can exploit it. Who should become an ethical hacker? We all should become ethical hackers. We all need to know basic things like applying patches as soon as they come out, change your password periodically, log out after you are done using an app, and look out for any unusual activities on your computer. Be vigilant. Many well-known companies have had their sensitive data compromised. How can ethical hackers help companies protect themselves from vulnerabilities? Ethical hackers can help monitor their system, find vulnerabilities, and make sure patches are applied on a regular basis. They will make sure all the computers and networking devices are configured properly, turn off the services that are not needed, change default passwords, and review the system logs to look for unusual activities. What is the importance of the CEH certification? What does this mean for professionals in the industry? Ethical hackers and attackers use the same tools. The CEH certification, teaches these professionals how to use these tools systematically and methodically. It teaches you to think like a hacker, but to use it to help people.

How do the students in the Ethical Hacker program learn a hands-on approach? Is there a software used during class? The Ethical Hacker Certificate program uses a simulated lab that is not connected to the network, so we do not have to worry about students attacking someone in the real world. We have 75+ hands-on labs for them to practice on to gain insight into how to use different tools. We use more than one tool for one purpose to compare the results and give students an option to choose which one they like the best. It also shows that there are more ways than one to do the testing and they should always use multiple tools to make sure they all tell you the same thing before moving to the next step. What is the difference between Ethical Hacking as a profession and an unethical hacker? Permission! What is your opinion on how media and entertainment portray hacking? How does this affect people’s perception of ethical hacking? Lately in the news, we have seen many big companies being attacked and affected. People are nervous about it. If big companies are attacked, how they can protect themselves? [However], we all can help each other by watching out for each other and sharing information. If someone is hacked, we should not judge them. Instead, be compassionate about it and have them share information so we all can learn from it.

OLLI TRAVEL

TRAVEL IS GOOD FOR US ALL! Unforgettable small-group travel experiences are waiting with the OLLI travel group. Travel is one of those things that naturally gives rise to questions and concerns. For those interested, we have answered the most frequently asked questions. What is the OLLI Travel Group? A newly formed group of individuals who have come together to plan trips for OLLI students and others that are 50 and older. The majority of these students are looking for others to travel with and seeking to find a group that is interested in taking short day trips together as well as domestic and international travel. What types of travel will be available? Local day trips will be planned for anyone that is interested in meeting a group of OLLI students to enjoy a local area or to share in an educational opportunity. Domestic trips will be planned nearby and across the country. The possibilities are endless. International trips will be planned and the committee is already working with travel agents and researching some amazing trips that you would all want to join. Will this be an educational travel opportunity? All of the trips will focus on cultural, historical and scenic locations. When it is possible, a course may be offered prior to the trip where individuals that

60

choose may learn about the area, culture, language and sights. What if I am traveling alone? Most of our travel group is planning to travel alone. Through this OLLI group, you will meet others to share accommodations. It is typically more affordable and it is always more fun. Do I have to be over 50 years of age? OLLI is designed for individuals that are 50 and older. The planned travel will be designed for individuals of this age. Are volunteers needed to help plan trips and how do I get involved? All of the travel opportunities will be volunteer led. Teams are forming in the areas of day trip travel, domestic travel and international travel. Contact Pat Walker, OLLI Program Manager, at pwalke43@ kennesaw.edu to be placed on the email list for future planning meetings.

SAT/ACT Preparation Verbal & Science

TEST PREP FOR STANDARDIZED EXAMS If you’re studying for a major exam, there can be a lot of stress involved. Test prep classes ease stress levels. Even if you consider yourself a good test taker, a good prep class is still an asset. With classes offered online, you can fit coursework around your schedule, and still benefit from personalized instructor support. Here’s how we can help you earn those letters after your name.

$159

SAT/ACT Preparation Quantitative $159

GED Preparation If you need to earn your GED, there’s no better time to get started. Our online prep class focuses on the four areas covered on the test: math, science, language arts and social studies. The instructor will work with you to practice and understand information in each of these subjects, setting you up for success when test day arrives.

SAT/ACT Preparation

We have in-person SAT Preparation here at KSU Center, but we also offer an SAT/ACT prep class focusing on the quantitative portion for each exam. Math in all its wonderful forms — geometry, algebra, statistics and more — is where so many people get tripped up on these exams. We’ll also talk about what not to do. The test often lists answers you can arrive at by solving the problem the wrong way, so we’ll go over those. GMAT and GRE Preparation You’re ready for graduate school. Either the GMAT or GRE is the official exam most schools require before entry. We have three classes to help:

• GMAT Preparation – Online • GRE Preparation – Quantitative – Online • GRE Preparation – Verbal and Analytical – Online The GMAT is often described as more focused on math while the GRE focuses more on verbal. You’ll need to have a thorough understanding of both to do well on the tests. For the GRE, we’ve broken it down into two courses: one for math and the other for language and logical reasoning. If there’s one area that’s harder for you, that’s the class you should take. For the GMAT, it’s one comprehensive class. One of the greatest benefits to this class is that you can practice on real GMAT exams from past years to give you an idea of how you would perform on the actual test. That alone makes you feel calmer and more prepared. Prepping for Another Test? If you’re off to nursing school or medical school, we also teach test prep classes for the TEAS and MCAT admission tests in-person at KSU Center. If you’re sitting for a certification exam like CompTIA or Cisco, we have online certification prep classes to help you earn those letters after your name.
