The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything

from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter and entertainment. Every student that enrolls in our courses or programs becomes one of our OLLI members and will begin to receive our quarterly Newsletter. Our members become part of our unique OLLI family where learning is a continuous part of our culture. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director I regret to report that I have succumbed to constant pressure from my grandchildren and have finally moved into the new and modern world. I am now the sorry owner of a new Apple iPhone 7. I was constantly being teased about being “old fashioned” whenever I pulled out my old and lovable flip phone which worked very well for years and never gave me any problems. In a senior moment of weakness, I agreed to go with my grandson to a Verizon store and purchase a new phone. The salesman explained a few features and then told me, if I encountered any problems, to simply print out the operating instructions which are available on the Internet. The first problem I had was trying to fit the new phone into my “phone pocket.” Didn’t fit. It was all downhill from there. I tried to call my favorites. Didn’t work. After spending a frustrating day trying to move into the new world, I looked up the instructions on the Internet and began printing. I ran out of paper and then checked to see how much more printing was necessary. I am certain there were at least a thousand or more pages that still needed to be printed after which I would spend a few years studying the instructions. I should mention there was no table of contents or index to guide me to what I needed. My grandson told me he would come to my rescue and teach me how to use the phone. I have no idea how long that will take. I mentioned my problem this morning to our youth program leader at church and she suggested I visit her religious education classes which are for the teenagers in our parish. She told me they could teach me everything I needed to know in a few minutes. That certainly didn’t

make me feel any better. Amazing what one might consider when desperation sets in. Perhaps we should offer an OLLI course to teach our members how to use the new telephones. In the meantime, I am off to a teenager’s religious education class. I hope they will be kind and gentle on a senior who doesn’t adjust very well to change. I really miss my flip phone. Hope to see you in class soon.

The labyrinth is an

ancient wisdom tool used for meditation. The oldest labyrinth design, the Classical Labyrinth, is 4,000 to 5,000 years old. It can be found in many cultures around the world. The path follows a circular design and allows for those walking to meander. The path itself might change along the way, but all paths lead to the center.

In 2015, Chris Beam introduced this course to OLLI students. She is a Certified Labyrinth Facilitator and Veriditas trained. Veriditas is a nonprofit international organization whose mission is to “inspire personal and planetary change and renewal through the labyrinth experience.” They support labyrinth facilitators around the world trying to promote a further understanding of it as a tool for personal and community transformation. Chris says, “The labyrinth is also a metaphor for your journey in life, in the present moment. Only the participant, the walker, knows what that metaphor is for them.” She said the Labyrinth is seen as a powerful meditation tool. Meditation in general clears the mind and allows the voice within to be heard. It can reduce stress and overall has benefits to all aspects of health, including reducing high blood pressure. Some may use the Labyrinth as a means of relieving stress or as a source of fun for children to run within it.

Walking the labyrinth clears the mind and engages the right brain where one may receive impressions, creative inspiration, allowing you to become a receptacle for the divine. “Once someone is in the labyrinth, it allows for the noise of the day to fade away the closer to the center they get,” Chris said. “Once you reach the center, you spend as much time there as you would like, and then return to the ‘outside world’ with whatever insight or inspiration you have gleaned.” Those in this class will leave with a better understanding of the history and general knowledge of the labyrinth. Along with resources for finding nearby labyrinths, students will make their own. “Most of all, they will leave the class with a sense of peace, acknowledging our oneness — yet uniqueness — on our journey in life. They will leave with a sense of being touched in some way,” Chris said.

Depicting Realistic Water in Landscape Art

In landscape art, water is often an essential component of the scene. Water may appear as waves crashing against rocks at the seashore; movement of a stream flowing through a forest before dropping into a waterfall; ripples spreading outward from a tossed stone or a horse taking a drink; rain falling from the sky, dew drops on a blossom; mist and clouds as part of the changing weather, even snow and ice of winter. This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. In this course, students will learn about a former Marine, who served in Japan on a top secret assignment and defected to the Soviet Union and returned to American but did not face espionage charges. He purchased a mail order poor quality Italian made rifle that he used to kill President John F. Kennedy while on a lunch break. This individual went to the lunchroom after the assassination to eat his lunch and later, proceeded to a movie theater, killing a police officer along the way. He was arrested in the theater and was killed two days later in the police station by a MAFIA connected strip club owner. Bridge in the 21st Century Part III- Defense

The third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the American Contract Bridge League and KSU. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, thirdhand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract.
