The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything

from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter and entertainment. Every student that enrolls in our courses or programs becomes one of our OLLI members and will begin to receive our quarterly Newsletter. Our members become part of our unique OLLI family where learning is a continuous part of our culture. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director Several years ago, we tried to develop a program for single seniors within our OLLI. Unfortunately, we were not successful in our efforts. I still feel there is a need for such a program and would like to ask our current members for their suggestions and help in making another attempt to serve the many singles that live in our Kennesaw State University area. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to speak with many of these individuals. They have taken OLLI classes but, with a few exceptions, have not participated in our socials, trips, Club Room activities, Donuts and Notes, or other activities because they feel out of place attending functions by themselves. I would like to ask for your help in creating this program. Any suggestions you could offer would be welcomed. In addition, it would be beneficial if we could find a few people willing to take a leadership role in creating this program. Our first step would be to arrange an organizational meeting for any current members and interested individuals who would like to help with this project. We can share ideas, establish goals, and try to build a program that would serve this group of individuals.

I live in an area that could be considered a retirement area. We have many single seniors who have moved to the area to be with children or grandchildren. Our church has a large group of single seniors who are very active and enjoy being part of a group they call “Goers and Doers.” They plan trips to Biloxi (for the casinos) and trips to other places of interest, such as Disney. They hold dinners, plan cruises, enjoy bridge nights and bingo nights, etc. They adopted a charity that they support with volunteer help and, in some cases, financial help. In total, they are very active and are enjoying life to the fullest. This is the type of activity I feel would be a great addition to our OLLI program. If you have an interest in helping us develop a program for single seniors, please let me know. Share any thoughts or ideas you might have related to this effort with us. Also, if you would like to participate in an organizational meeting, please let me know. We will then establish a date and time for such a meeting. The yearly OLLI Sampler hopes to encourage students to try new courses and gives an

opportunity to experience an overview of what OLLI has to offer. This year’s class ranges from Gerald Flinchum’s course on the Guerilla War in Georgia to Steve Nudson’s course on sketching. The Sampler takes place every Monday in October from 1 3 PM. Each instructor will teach for one hour on their designated day. Those who participate in the Sampler will receive a registration to the OLLI Oktoberfest Social on October 30. This year, OLLI focused on promoting new courses along with bringing back old favorites. Students will have the opportunity to have face-to-face time with instructors and ask questions. “Many of our instructors have a following of students, and the Sampler allows new instructors the chance to be in front of a class and encourage students to register,” said OLLI program manager Patricia Walker. “I hope students gain a good sense of what we have to offer and that they sign up for a new course to broaden and extend the types of classes they have been participating in.”

Capture your cherished vacation memories in watercolor! Students will create paintings inspired by their vacation and/or travel photos, personal photographs or sketches. On vacation, many travelers take photos; some keep a diary of their impressions. But, a sketch of what you see and feel when experiencing the moment can provide a long-lasting record that stimulates your “play-back” description. This course provides students of all levels an

Drawing with pen and ink is not for the faint at heart. This ageless medium provides an opportunity for artists to make crisp, detailed illustrations or to complement watercolor painting. This course offers the experienced pencil sketching artist the challenge of laying ink on top of a pencil line. Learn how and when to hatch, cross-hatch, and stipple for tone and shadow. Classic Film Noir

Night and the city; hard boiled detectives and sinister femme fatales; damaged heroes and innocent ingenues. These are some of the ingredients that make up one of the most original genres in American film history. From the early 1940s to the late 1950s these mostly low budget black and white films captured the cynicism and disillusionment of post World War II America, while at the same time introducing some of the most skilled directors and most iconic actors of the 20th century (Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, and Ava Gardner). Spirits of The Great American West

This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known and rarely addressed events and characters are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Faces of “America’s Greatest Generations” Since 1776

The “American Experience,” sometimes called the “American Dream” rises from the ashes of war again and again since the founding of the American Nation in the late 18th century. In the 19th century the term “Manifest Destiny” exploded to the forefront of the explanations and justifications for frontier “pioneers” to patriotically fill in all the land between both oceans no matter the personal sacrifice. A History of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

This course will study the book, “What’s In A Name?” written by Dale Hartsfield, the instructor. Mr. Hartsfield was the family spokesperson for the Hartsfield family when the City of Atlanta renamed the airport, HartsfieldJackson International Airport. The controversy surrounding the name change prompted the

writing of this book. The class will cover the history of the great airport and the five official names since, the airport was built in 1925. The course will also discuss “fighting city hall.” If you enjoy local history, politics, race relations and more this will be an interesting course for you. The Guerrilla War in Georgia 1861-1865

From the Appalachians to the Wiregrass, it’s the little known conflict that nearly brought Georgia to the brink of anarchy. A rare look into the irregular war that began with local opposition to secession in 1861 and the passage of conscription in 1862 which led to open rebellion by 1863. This course will include an overview of the operations of state troops and home guard militia to counter draft evasion, desertion and “Tory” activity in the state. The various guerrilla bands that existed during this period are covered in detail. Reflections on Elections

While many closely track contemporary elections, we seldom reflect on elections of the past. Pre-1990. This class will look at the founders debates and ideas that led to Article II of the constitution, “The Executive,” or the office of the president. Discussion will also address the personalities and challenges that were met successfully and in some cases not so successfully by Presidents including their impact on the nation, the world, and their legacies. The class will discuss notable and contentious elections. The final two sessions will be “When Presidents Lie,” and “Elections that were Especially Consequential.” As time passes Presidents have been rated and frequently these ratings change. Efforts will be made to explain these changes. Most students will be surprised to find that there is little in Presidential politics that is new and yet there is much that might surprise them. Bridge in the 21st Century - Part I

This series was developed by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) to introduce a new player to the game of duplicate bridge. Bridge in the 21st Century Part III- Defense

The third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the

American Contract Bridge League and KSU. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that the declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with the declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action.
