JULIE COATES J ul i e Coa tes is a n ex p e r i e n ce d researcher, teacher and trainer in the area of students with Asperger’s. She teaches courses at the graduate level in adult and higher education and does seminars, training and online courses for K-12 teachers. Coates wrote the pioneering book Generational Learning Styles, and authored a chapter on students with Asperger’s as co-author of the new book, The Pedagogy of the 21st Century.

Mixed Media Printmaking

Learn several techniques and processes in printmaking to create a mixed media print that incorporates several layers. We will have demos during each class to show how anything from carved blocks to simple paper cut stencils can change the way a print looks. Chocolate, and its source plant cacao, have a rich, intriguing story to tell. In this educational (and very tasty) workshop, we’ll learn the history of cacao, how it’s made into chocolate, how it’s used and enjoyed, and how to discern and appreciate its intricate flavors. Schlock Cinema Schlock Cinema is a cinematic grab bag—with something for every horror and monster movie aficionado! We’ll be concentrating, with one exception, on somewhat obscure films from the ‘60s and ’70s. We open with “ZAAT” about an angry marine biologist who turns himself into an aggressive, hostile fish-man to wreak revenge on his detractors. The Story of Tea

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world, after water. It has a storied history, full of mystery and influential in global politics. It plays an important role in diverse cultures, historically, and today. In this workshop, we’ll learn the history of tea, how it’s grown and processed, and how one species of plant manifests in the variety of teas we enjoy, including black, green, oolong, white, and pu’er. We’ll taste a variety of fine teas to best appreciate its incredible diversity, and will learn how to select, store, and brew it.
