Welcome to Continuing Education! Winterizing Your Curiosity Since 1970

It’s a safe bet we all share similar winter changeover routines. With the shift in season we fiddle with the thermostat more frequently, drag our heavy coats from the back of the closet and make sure the ice scraper is still in the glove box. Our built-in ability to cope with the change in weather teaches us we’re far more flexible than we realize—a quality we celebrate as lifelong learners. This winter, let Continuing Education help you brace up for the winter months with a crisp new course offering, or just cozy up to an old favorite. It’s getting cold, but a warm current of challenging ideas and activities is flowing your way. Let us help you acclimate.

I have learned so much in this class! I honestly feel enriched and inspired. I am very grateful to have been introduced to these amazing, strong women and to have heard their stories. Angela Sells was a great instructor and shared so much rich knowledge in such a comprehensible and vivid way drawing a line from the past to the present. Thank you! – Maya H. on Women and Mythology with Angela Sells

Writing Philosophy

8

Is this a writing class or a philosophy class? Yes, to both! Good writing isn’t all plot and character—much of it is arguing a point of view, and that means being clear, precise, and in the end, persuasive. Philosophers ask weird questions like, “Should we edit human DNA?” “What is knowledge?” and “Can machines think?” From these questions we will form and hone our arguments. We’ll be doing philosophy in this class and reading some short pieces by contemporary philosophers, all with an eye to sharpening your writing skills. See www.learnatnorth.org for textbook information. 7150 1/23/2020 - 3/5/2020 6:30 - 8:30PM 7 ses Th Farr CC Bldg Room 3345 $119

This course is a great compliment to the Introduction to Poetry Workshop course and open to writers of all skill and experience levels. 7168 1/25/2020 - 3/7/2020 2:00 - 4:00PM 7 ses Sa Isaac CC Bldg Room 3343 $129

In our culture, solutions to life’s challenges range from coffee with a friend to seeing a therapist. Three thousand years before clinical therapy ever existed, people turned to philosophy. (Socrates said the fundamental philosophical problem was not “How does the world work?” but “How should we live our lives?”) In this fun, discussionbased class, we’ll look briefly at what a few famous philosophical advice-givers have said—including Socrates, Seneca and Nietzsche— but our main focus will be taking on the philosopher’s role ourselves. For example, we’ll explore how mapping the relationship between our knowledge and our emotions can help us better handle difficulties in our own lives. The clock is ticking. The deadline approaches. An incriminating letter must be intercepted. A desperate father struggles to save his son from the gallows. A washed-up boxer is forced to take a dive, his story unrolling in real time. A poisoned man races time to catch his own murderer. A giant clock looms over a fugitive investigating a murder he didn’t commit. Time is of the essence this quarter as we screen noir classics, The Set-Up, Cause for Alarm, Time Without Pity, The Big Clock and D.O.A. 7105 1/14/2020 - 2/11/2020 7:00 - 9:00PM 5 ses Tu Noe LB Bldg Room 1131 $79

This winter we hit the ground running with a set of films far, far under par and loosely linked by the idea that hasty exits are probably the best exits! First up we strike TV Land gold when Andy Griffith, William Shatner, Robert Reed and Marjoe Gortner star as ad execs playing dirt bike Deliverance in Pray for the Wildcats (1974). Next, Ray Milland takes on the titular role in Bulldog Drummond Escapes (1937), and gets caught up in a mystery involving a beautiful heiress and international espionage. In Narrow Margin (1952) Marie Windsor stars as a gangster’s widow taking a treacherous train ride to testify against the mob. Loosely based on a Noel Coward play, Easy Virtue (1928) is an early Hitchcock silent classic about a woman denied a divorce from her drunken, philandering husband because of her good looks. We close out the quarter with an early entry into the giant arachnid horror genre with The Black Scorpion staring Richard Denning, Mara Corday and featuring animation by King Kong creator, Willis O’Brien. 7166 2/20/2020 - 3/19/2020 7:00 - 9:00PM 5 ses Th Hopkins LB Bldg Room 1131 $79
