Katie Lund is the David Rossetti and Jan Avent Langsdorf Scholar. She is a junior from Libertyville, Illinois and is double majoring in computer science and cognitive neuroscience and minoring in music. Katie is the president of Washington University’s Women in Computer Science organization. She is involved in Studio: TESLA and plays cello in the Symphony Orchestra. She joined Dr. Keith Hengen’s computational neuroscience lab in January 2020. She hopes to work in the field of adaptive technology.

Libby Allman and Scott Ruland, both engineers, are life-long advocates of women and girls in STEM careers. As a student in Washington University’s Dual Degree Engineering Program, Libby earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1991. She has held a number of leadership positions in Supply Chain for over 25 years, most recently with Hallmark Cards, Inc. Libby is a recipient of the Central Exchange STEMMy Ground Breaker award. She served as chair of the Board of Directors for Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri where she continues as a board member. She is a member and former board member of the Society of Women Engineers. At WashU, Libby is a member of the McKelvey Engineering National Council and the Women and Engineering Leadership Society serving as a mentor to young women in McKelvey Engineering. She was awarded the 2017 Engineering Alumni Achievement award. Scott, who holds an electrical engineering degree from the University of Kansas and an MBA from UMKC, retired from Intoxalock in 2019. The Louis Caputo and Rose Eufinger Scholarship was established by Lou Caputo in honor of his wife, the late Rosalie (Rose) Eufinger. Rose earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Washington University in 1962. When Lou Caputo first met Rose, he was immediately impressed by her professional achievements. Rose began working as a journalist in technological industries and eventually became executive editor of Semiconductor Magazine. Louis is a retired engineer and graduate of Northeastern University. Before passing away in 2006, Rose and Lou regularly attended WashU events in the San Francisco area. Lou is a member of the Brookings Partners and is an Eliot Society Benefactor.

Laurel Kaleda received a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Washington University in 1966. Laurel worked for IBM as a senior marketing manager. She collaborated with engineers, marketers, and software developers to enhance IBM’s disk-storage products portfolio. Laurel is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). She has served as a director of IEEE, chair of the Audit Committee, president of the IEEE Computer Society, and many other volunteer positions. Laurel has received Computer Society Meritorious Service Awards in recognition of her contributions to the organization. She received a McKelvey Alumni Achievement Award in 2000. Ray Kaleda was a consulting engineer with General Electric. Together they enjoy sailing, traveling, and photography. Laurel and Ray are Eliot Society Benefactor and Brookings Partners members.

Verneta J. Simon earned her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Washington University in 1982. Verneta has supported an annual scholarship in honor and memory of her parents, William D. and Verneta H. Simon, since 2007. William D. Simon, Jr. received a degree in pharmacology from Xavier University in New Orleans and was the first African American to serve as a pharmacist for the V.A. Lakeside Medical Center near Chicago. A veteran of the United States Army, he was a member of the American Legion and the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. The support of her parents helped Verneta J. Simon earned her bachelor’s in chemical engineering from WashU in 1982 and a master’s and graduate certificate from Northwestern University. She has been employed in Chicago by the Environmental Protection Agency since the mid 1980s, where she coordinates and manages on-site logistics for efforts to mitigate environmental disasters such as oil spills, train wrecks, floods, and storms.
