Jazz - focuses on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary, to help develop a well rounded dancer.

Darcey Bussell

Grade Dance Classes – students must have reached this level to join this class. Classes are taught the ISTD examination syllabus work in Modern and Tap and Cecchetti examination syllabus work in Ballet lessons. ‘I don't see anything negative about dance. It is so good for you, mentally and physically, and so for me to promote it is the easiest thing to do.’

Ballet - short barre and centre work, age appropriate stretches and basic positions of the legs and arms. Students will learn ballet fundamentals and terminology while developing strength, confidence, balance and flexibility. This is not a graded lesson and examination work will only be taught on a Saturday.

Dance

Tap - designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, co-ordination, and speed of movement. This is not a graded lesson and examination work will only be taught on a Saturday.

Street Dance - graceful, powerful and will challenge your body. It is a freestyle dance: throughout the course you will explore several different styles of street dance and begin building the vocabulary of movement to help you learn to freestyle with confidence and flair.

Dance @NewHallDance

Contemporary is an exciting fusion which allows students to work through powerful and emotional routines.

Ballroom - Standard ballroom dances are elegant and have strong emphasis on posture, more formal than Latin Dances. They are generally danced in a closed position. It consists of the Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango, and Viennese waltz.

Contemporary Dance – focus on expressing emotion through organic movements and unrestricted lines. Incorporating elements of Lyrical, Jazz, Ballet and Modern dance.

Lyrical Dance - a dance style that embodies various aspects of Ballet, Jazz, Acrobatics, and Modern dance. The style is usually danced at a faster pace than Ballet but not as fast as Jazz. Lyrical dance is a category typically found in dance competitions.

SportSport

‘Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen’ Michael Jordan

@NewHallSport

New Hall students are able to develop their team spirit and physical development through our rich programme of sporting opportunities. Under the guidance of expert coaches, including former international sportsmen and women, New Hall balances first-class training for those with particular sporting talents, with an inclusive ‘sport for all’ approach.

Our facilities (including a national standard athletics track, floodlit Astroturf pitch, fitness suite, 10 floodlit tennis and netball courts, cricket and rugby pitches, Golf Practice Nets and a 25-metre indoor swimming pool) set us apart and the rich variety of sports on offer include rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, athletics, golf, riding, skiing and tennis.

Our sportsmen and women at New Hall School compete at county, regional and national levels, at which they have enjoyed individual and team success.

Technical Theatre Club - this is a chance for those in Year 9 and above, with an interest in the technical aspects of theatre-making. The focus, initially, is on sound and lighting design and operation, but there is scope to develop other areas depending on areas of interest and expertise.

Additional elements - Drama co-curricular programme may include public speaking, debating and one-off events or competitions. In recent years, New Hall has excelled at the English Speaking Union (ESU) Public Speaking Competition and plans are already in place to submit entries for the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Shakespeare Monologue Competition. Please enquire about these opportunities and listen out for news about how to get involved and the commitment expected.

Production Rehearsals - these are a key element to the co-curricular programme and take place throughout the week. Towards the end of this term, we will embark on a journey to prepare for a whole Senior Division production and those selected by audition to take part will be expected to attend every rehearsal with creative energy and focus in abundance. In recent years, productions have included A Christmas Carol, Treasure Island, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Sound Of Music, Footloose , Shakespeare in Love and Oliver!

Drama

Students are invited to get involved as on-stage performers but also in the technical and practical aspects of making theatre. This can include assisting with lighting, sound, set design, construction, costumes, theatre make-up, stage management and stage crew. Please speak to the Drama Department staff about opportunities in those areas.

Years 7 and 8 Drama Clubs - these are exciting once-a-week opportunities to develop core acting and story-telling skills through games and activities, leading to performance opportunities. Later in the academic year, there will be a longer production that students from the clubs will be working towards.

@NewHallDrama

Drama

Trinity Drama - offers an unrivalled choice of qualifications for students and teachers of drama and speech. It is an international exam board and independent education charity that has been providing assessments globally since 1877. We are excited about the opportunity for students to transfer skills gained from past experience and use them to develop further through the wide range of options and fresh possibilities that Trinity Drama will provide. It is entirely feasible for students to enter Trinity at a similar or the same level as they may have reached in LAMDA. Students taking Trinity Examinations are encouraged to bring their own choices and interests into exams and there is flexibility to enable them to perform to their strengths while developing new skills. The examiners are trained to be friendly and approachable in order to put students at ease and give maximum encouragement. This is an encouraging development, and having been accepted formally as a Trinity Drama Centre, we now aim to become a Trinity Champion Centre in due course. ‘Acting is a sport. On stage you must be ready to move like a tennis player on his toes. Your concentration must be keen, your reflexes sharp; your body and mind are in top gear, the chase is on. Acting is energy. In theatre, people pay to see energy’ Clive Swift

Art

Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 Art and Year 11 GCSE Photography - This activity will cater for up to 14 students at any one time. The activity will be primed towards helping in GCSE coursework submissions. Sixth Form students will work in a separate bubble and more independently, with occasional advice from the teacher.

Year 13 Art/Photography - This activity will allow for extended use of the Year 13 Art studio and it will support the advancement of A Level coursework submissions. There will be no limit to the numbers, but it is for Year 13 Art/Photography students only.

Gold is the pinnacle of the Award scheme and is very favourably considered by universities and employers. Sessions after School will build on the skills that students start to learn throughout the Silver sessions in Year 11. Students can direct entry onto the Gold Award or transfer their Silver onto Gold. The expeditions will take place later this academic year and are four days and three nights; both will need to be completed. This is a sign up activity for students and incurs a cost payable by each participant. Further information about signing up will be available in September for Gold.

Sessions after school will build on the skills that students start to learn throughout the Bronze sessions in Year 10 including navigation, compass skills, map reading as well as cooking on a trangia. Students can direct entry onto the Silver Award or transfer their Bronze into Silver.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is highly respected in School as an opportunity for students to develop leadership, teamwork, demonstrate commitment and experience the outdoors. Sessions after School will teach students about navigation, compass skills, map reading, as well as cooking on a trangia all in preparation for a two day, one night expedition during the Trinity Term. This is a sign up activity for students and incurs a cost payable by each participant.
